'Ayothi' movie review: Full of heart and yet, marred by melodrama

Ayothi

Death is indeed a profound teacher of life. Perhaps, it is death that reminds us to be humane and that the greatest loss is what dies inside us when we are alive. Many a time, human’s basic tenet, to be compassionate and empathic, is vanquished by cultivated differences, conceit and intolerance. And only the unsparing death of our close ones teaches us the value of life and makes us realise that we are all just a speck of dust in the universe. And Sasi Kumar’s Ayothi , an emotional drama, serves as a reminder for us to stay grounded and rise above the manufactured plague that comes in various names called religion, caste, creed, and race.

Initially, like many of them, I was sceptical if it was a political film considering the title’s reference to the place, Ayodhya, which holds the history of the political and socio-religious dispute over a piece of land. Although the film begins with montage shots of Ayodhya town, we soon understand that the film is endeavouring to tell a different story about life, death, and everything in between.

A chauvinistic patriarch Balram (Yashpal) from Ayodhya, decides to take his family, consisting of his wife Janaki, daughter Shivani (Preethi) and a young son, on a pilgrimage to Rameshwaram.

During the road transit from Madurai to Rameshwaram, Balram misbehaves with the driver, leading to an altercation. As the driver loses control, the car meets with an accident, leading to Janaki’s death. When the driver informs his friends, characters played by Sasikumar and Pugazh, decide to help the family in transporting the body to their native. The film unfolds with some soul-stirring series of events of the day.

Based on true events, the writer-director has taken an unconventional route to mark his directorial debut without any mass action block, a comedy track to induce chuckles or a muddled love angle.

Most importantly, one of the palpable aspects of the film is that the Hindi-speaking characters continue to speak in their mother tongue without shifting to Tamil or an overlapped Tamil dub. It helped the film retain its rootedness and realness in the emotions.

While the film has a reinvigorating story, the experience is watered down due to the burgeoning melodrama in many scenes. For instance, when the body is taken out of the mortuary, the extended shots of the children crying, on-and-off intercuts to the dead body, backed by the serial-ish melancholic-background score, stood extremely suffocating.

As audiences are embracing the idea of realistic cinema, the old-school treatment of forcefully injecting hard-hitting emotions could rip off the opportunity for the audiences to feel it by themselves organically. Likewise, Balram’s character being abusive to his wife, mercilessly not understanding the feelings of his children and harbouring customs and beliefs without even feeling for the loss of his wife does infuriate but, his overtly aggressive demeanour seems a bit caricaturish.

However, Yashpal, the veteran actor, does complete justice to the role with his convincing performance. Debutant Preethi, who plays the timid and naive Shivani throughout the film, has an assertive scene in pre-climax that lets her show off her acting potential. And at a point when she explodes at her inhumane father, making him realise that he did not let her mother live in peace, and yet bothers following customs to let her rest in peace, reverberates the core crux of the film. And for Sasikumar, other than his disjointed introduction fight scene, there are no unnecessary heroic moments. The actor gracefully plays the part and makes us feel like he is one among us. Comedian Pugazh efficiently breaks out of the typecast.

Meanwhile, Ayothi has its share of some predictable elements, including the final reveal and some reactions in between. But it can be overlooked for the genuine efforts reflected in the writing. Although it is an emotional drama, the creator has sincerely weaved in some challenging conflictsto offer a satisfactory experience. It is indeed a relief to see a film stand true to its vision in most parts. However, the haphazard Gana and dance sequence by a bunch of petty thieves at the police station is completely out of place.

Ayothi could have offered a long-lasting impact if only there was some finesse in the craft and freshness in the treatment. Even the hackneyed style of music and the songs lacked subtlety, hence, creating jarring atmos. Ayothi, through the concept of death, comments on brotherhood, the value of family, and shows that love knows no difference. Above all, it instils hope that there are still some good people left on earth, making it a better place to live.

Story: A family from Uttar Pradesh meets with an accident enroute Rameshwaran. How their life changes after the untoward incident forms the plot of Ayothi.

Ayothi Review: They say death is a great equalizer. After all, death is inevitable and it is in death that we learn some very profound lessons about life. Ayothi director R Manthira Moorthy dives deep into the very theme and has come with a story that has our heart. Going by the film's title, one might easily mistake it for a film with religious connotations or a subject that might touch upon the political and religious history of Ayodhya, including the communal tension over a land dispute. But Ayothi is far from it. In fact, the story tells us that humanity is much above that - caste, creed, religion, culture and language.

Also Read: Ayothi: Sasikumar's THIS special gesture for his team wins hearts of fans

The film begins in Ayodhya in a family headed by the patriarchal, chauvinist  and religious Balram (Yashpal Sharma). He treats women as lesser beings and has no qualms about inflicting blows on his wife Janki (Anju Asrani) in front of his children. He despises the fact that his daughter goes to college and seems to have no love for his young son. Even as the family quietly suffers all the abuse, when Balram tells them they are going to Rameshwaram on the day of Diwali, they hope that their life might change after the trip. It changes and how!

When the family is enroute Rameshwaram in a cab, an altercation with the cab driver leads to an accident on the highway, which turns fatal for Janki. The death comes as a huge blow to the children, who have lost the only loving figure among their parents. Help comes in the form of a few local people including Sasikumar's character and his friends. Though Balram doesn't approve of their presence, when Shivani ( Preethi Asrani) appeals to them for help, they lend a helping hand. The film then narrates the ordeal of the day.

The plot of Ayothi is quite simple. It revolves around how the family takes Janki's mortal remains back to their hometown. The director doesn't try to infuse many unnecessary subplots, except the song in the police station that sticks out like a sore thumb. The film also provides a glimpse at the many administrative hurdles one has to face during a festival day like Diwali. The director also throws one roadblock after another for Sasikumar and his friends to solve, thus keeping us gripped to the story until the end.

While Sasikumar doesn't get any mass heroic moments in the film, he plays his role to perfection and we empathise with him when his friend Pugazh drags him from the mortuary. It's refreshing to see Pugazh play a well-meaning supporting character. Vinoth, too, strikes a chord as a good samaritan and a friend in need. While Yashpal Sharma's stone-hearted character might seem like he has gone completely overboard at times, the actor pulls it off convincingly. Preethi Asrani, who plays the college-going Shivani, is apt for the role, who plays the daughter who dotes over her mother and young brother and shines in the scene where she confronts her father.

A special word for the cinematographer Madhesh Manickam, who has captured the colourful Ayodhya and the vibrant Rameshwaran in a picturesque manner. The film's editing is also near-perfect. The best part about the film is that the characters stick to their respective languages even as they converse with each other, thus making the scenes more believable.

With a predictable big reveal at the end, Ayothi might have been a fantastic fare had the director avoided the cliched melodrama. But he quite makes up for it with many heart-warming moments.

Verdict: A heartwarming film that talks about humanity rising above its self-created differences.

Tamil cinema has always welcomed and appreciated stories that have owned unique and good content-driven plots. Significantly, it looks like there is yet another inclusion to this list as this Friday witnesses a surprise arrival. Sasikumar’s Ayothi directed by Manthira Moorthy, features Priya Asrani, Yashpal Sharma, Pugazh, and a few more prominent actors in the star cast with N.R. Raghunanthan as the music director.

The story revolves around a good-hearted man (Sasikumar), who gets into a turbulent and complex process of helping a North Indian family by making efforts to send the mortal remains of a woman in their family back to their native so that they can perform the final rites according to their customs.

Yashpal Sharma, who plays a rough and arrogant man travels all the way from Ayothi to Tamil Nadu along with his family comprising wife, daughter (Priya Asrani), and son. While driving back from Madurai to Rameswaram, he creates a mess with his rough nature, which costs the life of his wife due to an accident. Yashpal doesn’t want the autopsy to be performed and wants to transport the wife’s mortal remains to Kashi, where there’s only flight at night. During this juncture, a cab driver’s friend (Sasikumar) gets into the picture and decides to pull off the mission. Will he be able to fulfill the family’s desire or not forms the crux of this story.

The film deals with a couple of good messages – The first one is the transformation of a cold-hearted man into a good being due to the demise of his beloved wife, and the humanity is the best religion in this world. Director Manthira Moorthy has taken up a story that will appeal to the interests of audiences from all walks of life.

Sasikumar needs special mention for choosing a script that completely changes his image. In recent times, he has been disappointing fares and now gets a solid movie to bounce back. A protagonist without a pair, romance, mass elements, etc suits him very well, and it has worked wonders for him in this movie. Everyone will remember and carry his character back home.

The director’s self-confidence in refraining from dubbing the Hindi characters in Tamil makes the film more impactful. Although the characters completely communicate in Hindi, the emotions are properly conveyed to the non-Tamil-speaking groups as well. Priya Asrani’s performance is so natural and commendable. There is one particular scene, where she vents her anger upon her father. Although the entire conversation is in Hindi, we start applauding her performance.

The other actors including Pugazh and Bose Venkat have made a decent spell. The background score by N.R. Raghunanthan stands out to be a pillar of this movie, but the songs look unwanted.

Overall, the director has narrated the story that happens in a single day with so much impact, and the unexpected climax is yet another takeaway.

On the whole, Ayothi surprises and impresses us in many places, it has all traits to impress the audiences without fail.

Verdict: An outstanding film with a beautiful message conveyed through emotions and stellar performances of actors.

While most films celebrate the qualities of courage, love, bravery or tenacity, only a few underline the significance of compassion and kindness. Director Manthira Moorthy’s Ayothi is a rare gem that just does that.

The film, based on a real-life incident that happened in Tamil Nadu, is easily among those projects that make Tamil cinema proud.

The story begins in Ayodhya where Balram (Yashpal Sharma), an ardent Ram bhakt , resides with his wife Janaki (Anju Asrani), college-going daughter Shivani (Preethi Asrani) and young son Sonu (Master Advaith).

Balram is religious to the point of being cruel. Needless to say, his wife and children tremble when he is around.

Ahead of Diwali celebrations, he gets train tickets for a holy trip to Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu. The family is overjoyed at the prospect of a trip and eagerly prepares for it.

The appointed day arrives and the trip begins. The family reaches Madurai. Balram, who is particular that they be in Rameshwaram by sunrise, looks to hire a cab.

In the cab, he starts chewing paan and keeps goading the driver — who exercises maximum restraint — to pick up speed.

Balaram keeps annoying the driver with his antics even as his wife and daughter look helplessly on from the back.

At one point, a fight ensues between the cab driver and Balram, eventually resulting in an accident.

While the driver suffers major injuries on his legs and arms, Balram’s wife Janaki suffers a head injury and is knocked unconscious. They rush her to a nearby hospital where doctors say that she has to undergo surgery which can only be done at the government hospital in Madurai.

However, most of the ambulance drivers are on a holiday (Diwali). Meanwhile, the cab driver, who is rendered immobile, calls up his friend (Sasikumar) for assistance.

When Sasikumar (I am not revealing his character’s name as it has significance and is only disclosed at the end) arrives at the hospital with another friend Pandi (Pugazh) to help out the driver, they see Shivani and Sonu weeping and are moved to pity.

Unable to communicate in the local language and stranded without a penny in their pockets, due to the accident, the children are in distress. They look helplessly at their mother even as Balram keeps blaming everybody who tries to help them rather than looking to save his wife.

At one point, Shivani seeks help from Sasikumar and Pandi. They don’t understand a word she utters but understand her pain and her request for help. What happens next is what the story is all about.

Restores faith in humanity

Ayothi is gripping right from the word go. The frantic efforts people make to help someone they do not know restores faith in humanity and unconsciously brings a smile to your face by the time the film ends.

It is not just about the efforts of one individual. The film shows how several people, in varying capacities, go out of their way to help someone in distress.

From a friend who sells his precious belongings to help out (Balaram’s) family to an unwell dean who looks to clear documents on a festival day, and the airport authorities who look for loopholes in rules so they can come to the aid of helpless passengers, Ayothi showcases people from different walks of life doing their bit to help.

The film narrates how all their little contributions finally add up to make a big difference to the family in distress.

And guess what? Music director NR Raghunandan’s background score accentuates the emotions on screen. He is phenomenal.

Performances

Sasikumar comes up with a strong performance after a long time. This film is bound to revive his career as an actor and put him back under the spotlight.

Preethi Asrani, who makes her debut in Tamil cinema as Shivani, comes up with a brilliant performance and steals the limelight.

Along with her sister Anju Asrani (who plays her mother Janaki in the film), Preethi delivers a powerful performance that breathes life into the movie.

Well-known Bollywood actor Yashpal Sharma, who makes his debut in Tamil cinema with A yothi , comes up with a commendable performance. He plays Balram with flair and conviction.

Pugazh, as Sasikumar’s loyal friend Pandi, comes up with a sterling performance to announce his arrival in the film industry.

Ayothi marks Manthira Moorthy’s directorial debut in the Tamil film industry and he creates a niche for himself in his maiden effort. Don’t be surprised if I say that Manthira Moorthy would take Tamil cinema to greater heights!

And yes, don’t give this film a miss.

Ayothi Review - A Surprisingly Neat Emotional Drama!

Ayothi Review - A Surprisingly Neat Emotional Drama!

Ashwin Ram

Ayothi is an emotional drama starring Sasikumar in the lead role. The film is directed by debutant Manthira Moorthy in Trident Arts production. Music is composed by N.R.Raghunanthan.

A family of four from North India visits Rameshwaram for darshan. One of them dies in a car accident driven by Sasikumar's friend. The hero takes over the situation, to help the innocent family fly back to their native place for the cremation process.

Writing/ Direction

To the simple line, the director has incorporated a lot of emotional layers which adds immense value to the script. The film focused from the work go and doesn’t deviate at any instance. Right from the scratch, the film is very true to its genre, predominantly revolves around a North Indian family and the dialogues are in Hindi which keeps the treatment authentic. The movie doesn’t rely on Sasikumar, in fact we get to travel only with the story-driven supporting characters in most of the initial portions. The hero enters their world when he is naturally brought into it, even then he underplays for a period of time. Heroism comes to the limelight only in the later stages of the film as it demands at a point, that too handled neatly within the believable limits because the struggle to achieve the goal is visible. Emotions work so well as the supporting characters have solid setups and payoffs. There might be doubts whether the film is eyeing to end in a morally regressive way, but completely convinces the audience by showing a pivotal character realizing what is right via a death and the message conveyed is noble, presented in a touching manner. There are a few melodramatic portions that go overboard, and some scenes take cinematic liberty for granted as quite a bit of logical loopholes exist. Has traces of Naadodigal , especially the climax where a woman approaches the hero asking for help. Great decision to lock a crisp runtime of just two hours, but can’t deny the fact that lags and sluggish pace were felt due to the realistic tone.

Performances

Sasikumar does a decent job, however he would have nailed it when he was in his prime form, but he makes the film believable because of his brand of portraying roles of a man with an uncontrollable helping tendency. The young debut actress who has played an innocent daughter role emotes brilliantly, undoubtedly one of the recent best debut performances, also blasts when she takes command and accuses her dad. Lagaan actor Yashpal Singh has done a key role, played his part perfectly. The little boy is great too, he too gets his share of being the major part in a sentiment scene in the later half. Pugazh is thankfully just a supporting character here and doesn't annoy us on-screen, for the first time.

Technicalities

Technical finesse is missing as the budget constraints are evident, but nothing is bad at the same time. Decent camera work, has a few pixelated aerial shots though. Certain cuts are planned and taken in such a way while shooting, but certain places are abrupt, Sasikumar’s intro scene and footage during the final credits could have been chopped off. Music-wise a satisfying outing, songs are pretty good with apt lyrics and likable voices. There is not much breathing space with respect to the background score, yet elevates certain emotionally-charged situations.

Sasikumar gives ample space for the strongly portrayed supporting characters in this off-beat flick which is emotionally appealing despite its dips. A thin plot developed well in writing and executed in a tidy manner.

அயோத்தி: திரை விமர்சனம்

ayothi movie review in english

The film's editing is also near-perfect.
