Combining traditional PhD-style research elements with support for researchers in professional practice, this course embodies dual philosophies which appeal to both academic student researchers and experienced educational practitioners. It has been designed to develop the individual’s capacity to work and progress in a professional context, supporting the growth of a research culture in the workplace. Opportunities for strategic thinking are maximised, your path through the curriculum being flexible and responsive, guided by the University of Wolverhampton’s diverse, professionally experienced teaching team whose expertise is employed throughout the course. Areas such as secondary school improvement, educational leadership, early years education and policy & practice in further & higher education are covered with first-hand understanding.

Government loans (Home Fee Status):

Government loans are available for postgraduate research students of up to £27,265, to cover fees and living expenses. More information can be found at Doctoral-loans website.

Studying in the UK: Guidance for EU students

For 2021/22 new entrants, EU, other EEA and Swiss nationals will no longer be eligible for home fee status and financial support from Student Finance England.

Self-funded:

We are able to take payments in instalments, to spread out the cost of your studies, and it is possible to switch between full-time and part-time modes of study. For more information go to How to pay.

Postgraduate Research Loyalty Discount:

To students progressing from an undergraduate programme and/or a taught postgraduate programme to a postgraduate research programme, where both courses are University of Wolverhampton Awards.

There is no time limit on how long ago you completed your degree and/or Masters level qualification, as long as the new award is at a higher level.

The team has experience of full time, part time, mature professionals and overseas students.

The Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing (FEHW) supports the research ambitions of over 240 doctoral students across Education, Health, Social Work and Social Care, Sport and Psychology. Our research community is diverse and dynamic. We work with local, regional and international students from across the world on a very diverse range of research fields.

What happens on the course?

Many of our research supervisors have internationally recognised expertise in a range of research methodologies and frequently work across subject areas so, for example, research supervision can take place around the intersections of Education and Health and Sport and Psychology.

The Harvard Ph.D. in Education trains cutting-edge researchers who work across disciplines to generate knowledge and translate discoveries into transformative policy and practice.

Offered jointly by the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Ph.D. in Education provides you with full access to the extraordinary resources of Harvard University and prepares you to assume meaningful roles as university faculty, researchers, senior-level education leaders, and policymakers.

As a Ph.D. candidate, you will collaborate with scholars across all Harvard graduate schools on original interdisciplinary research. In the process, you will help forge new fields of inquiry that will impact the way we teach and learn. The program’s required coursework will develop your knowledge of education and your expertise in a range of quantitative and qualitative methods needed to conduct high-quality research. Guided by the goal of making a transformative impact on education research, policy, and practice, you will focus on independent research in various domains, including human development, learning and teaching, policy analysis and evaluation, institutions and society, and instructional practice.   

Curriculum Information

The Ph.D. in Education requires five years of full-time study to complete. You will choose your individual coursework and design your original research in close consultation with your HGSE faculty adviser and dissertation committee. The requirements listed below include the three Ph.D. concentrations: Culture, Institutions, and Society; Education Policy and Program Evaluation; and Human Development, Learning and Teaching .

Ph.D. Concentrations and Examples

Summary of Ph.D. Program

Doctoral Colloquia  In year one and two you are required to attend. The colloquia convenes weekly and features presentations of work-in-progress and completed work by Harvard faculty, faculty and researchers from outside Harvard, and Harvard doctoral students. Ph.D. students present once in the colloquia over the course of their career.

Research Apprenticeship The Research Apprenticeship is designed to provide ongoing training and mentoring to develop your research skills throughout the entire program.

Teaching Fellowships The Teaching Fellowship is an opportunity to enhance students' teaching skills, promote learning consolidation, and provide opportunities to collaborate with faculty on pedagogical development.

Comprehensive Exams  The Written Exam (year 2, spring) tests you on both general and concentration-specific knowledge. The Oral Exam (year 3, fall/winter) tests your command of your chosen field of study and your ability to design, develop, and implement an original research project.

Dissertation  Based on your original research, the dissertation process consists of three parts: the Dissertation Proposal, the writing, and an oral defense before the members of your dissertation committee.

Culture, Institutions, and Society (CIS) Concentration

In CIS, you will examine the broader cultural, institutional, organizational, and social contexts relevant to education across the lifespan. What is the value and purpose of education? How do cultural, institutional, and social factors shape educational processes and outcomes? How effective are social movements and community action in education reform? How do we measure stratification and institutional inequality? In CIS, your work will be informed by theories and methods from sociology, history, political science, organizational behavior and management, philosophy, and anthropology. You can examine contexts as diverse as classrooms, families, neighborhoods, schools, colleges and universities, religious institutions, nonprofits, government agencies, and more.

Education Policy and Program Evaluation (EPPE) Concentration

In EPPE, you will research the design, implementation, and evaluation of education policy affecting early childhood, K–12, and postsecondary education in the U.S. and internationally. You will evaluate and assess individual programs and policies related to critical issues like access to education, teacher effectiveness, school finance, testing and accountability systems, school choice, financial aid, college enrollment and persistence, and more. Your work will be informed by theories and methods from economics, political science, public policy, and sociology, history, philosophy, and statistics. This concentration shares some themes with CIS, but your work with EPPE will focus on public policy and large-scale reforms.

Human Development, Learning and Teaching (HDLT) Concentration

In HDLT, you will work to advance the role of scientific research in education policy, reform, and practice. New discoveries in the science of learning and development — the integration of biological, cognitive, and social processes; the relationships between technology and learning; or the factors that influence individual variations in learning — are transforming the practice of teaching and learning in both formal and informal settings. Whether studying behavioral, cognitive, or social-emotional development in children or the design of learning technologies to maximize understanding, you will gain a strong background in human development, the science of learning, and sociocultural factors that explain variation in learning and developmental pathways. Your research will be informed by theories and methods from psychology, cognitive science, sociology and linguistics, philosophy, the biological sciences and mathematics, and organizational behavior.

The University of West London has been recognised by the Government's Research Excellence Framework (REF) for its exceptional research work.

You will have a supervisory team made up of a Director of Studies with expertise in your chosen field, a further supervisor and, where appropriate, an additional adviser. Your research will be judged through the presentation of a thesis or artefact and a viva voce for academic assessment. We provide a stimulating and supportive environment where you will benefit from:

About PhD study

This course is available for you to study either on a full-time or part-time basis and you have the flexibility to switch should you need to.

A PhD is founded on independent research.  You will undertake a systematic and in-depth exploration of your chosen topic to produce a substantial body of knowledge and make an original and important contribution to the subject area.  

The support provided by your supervisory team will be vital to your student experience and scholarly advancement.  You and your supervisors will have regular one-to-one meetings which will provide you with opportunities to develop your research topic and discuss your progress.

We run seminars in research methods from the Graduate Centre, as well as an ongoing series of events and activities organised by Schools and Colleges. Specialist help with academic English for students for whom English is not their first language is available.

Rami Ranger House (Postgraduate Student Centre)

Postgraduate and International Student Centre is a new focal point for the university’s postgraduate and international students, providing dedicated space for social and learning interaction.

This building, which is three storeys high, offers spaces for collaborative working, socialising, supervision and mentoring on the ground floor. The first floor has work spaces for the postgraduate support teams to use while the second floor provides guest accommodation for visiting scholars.

The Paul Hamlyn Library

We contribute to national and international initiatives and promote collaboration and networking opportunities. We also encourage and support you to publish and disseminate your research in academic journals and via presenting papers at conferences.

We run an annual conference for doctoral students, where you are encouraged to present a paper about your research. As well as being an opportunity to discuss your work with other students, the conference is a chance to gain valuable experience in presenting your research and participating in open discussions with academic peers.

You will also find other opportunities such as postgraduate student seminars and forums within your specific subject area.

Once you start a PhD course at UWL, you become part of our research community. You will have access to a postgraduate common room, located at our Ealing campus on St Mary’s Road, where you will meet fellow researchers from other subject disciplines offering scope for collaborations or simply to discuss ideas, allowing you to be part of a vibrant research environment.

The minimum entry requirements for a research degree are:

  • a good first degree (First Class or Upper Second Class), or equivalent qualification in a relevant field
  • a Masters Degree (MA, MSc, MBA or MRes) with Merit, or equivalent postgraduate or research experience.

We look for students with:

  • a passion for their chosen subject.

You will also have a well thought through and persuasive proposal.

  • Competence in written and spoken English is a pre-requisite for entrance to this programme. An IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 6.5 (with no element under 6.0).

The vice chancellor's phd scholarships.

We welcome applicants for our full-time Vice Chancellor's PhD scholarships, which are open to all UK students who qualify and include:

  • Waiver of UK PhD tuition fees
  • Payment of a tax-free stipend of £17,000 per annum.

PhD scholars carry out teaching duties for a maximum of six hours per week. Scholarships are for three years (subject to satisfactory performance and academic progress).

You can apply for one of our Vice-Chancellor's PhD scholarships as part of your PhD application - please state on the application form that you would like to apply for the Vice-Chancellors Scholarship.

Terms and conditions

Beneficiaries of these scholarships will be engaged on a programme of full-time study and are not expected to undertake paid work for the duration of their course. The stipend will support students towards their accommodation and living costs, and towards any peripheral costs incurred in the course of their study (including attendance at conferences).

Top graduate schools in Wisconsin landed on the latest U.S. News & World Report list ranking more than 2,000 programs across the country. U.S. News & World Report published its 2024-'25 report in April, ranking graduate programs in business, education, law and nursing, among other fields.

University of Wisconsin-Madison's the School of Education tied for first overall with Teacher's College, Columbia University, according the report. That's up from third overall and second among public universities last year.

UT Austin College of Education Ranks Among Best Graduate Schools in the Nation

The College of Education at The University of Texas at Austin soared eight positions in this year’s U.S. News & World Report  Best Graduate School Rankings  and now sits at #4 among public schools, #8 overall and among the top 10 best education schools in the country. Four programs moved up as well with nine programs ranked in the top 20 and six ranked in the top 10, including Educational Administration, Education Policy, Educational Psychology and Special Education.

“In the College of Education we take very seriously our commitment to teach innovatively, conduct groundbreaking research and reimagine the education and health landscape,” said Charles R. Martinez, Jr., dean of the College of Education at UT Austin. “The recent rankings reflect our success and commitment to those principles, and to ensuring our students receive the highest quality education to go out and make a positive impact in the world. I am very proud of our entire College of Education community whose hard work and dedication drives our rankings year over year.”

The college’s Kinesiology and Health Education programs also rank highly, with its doctoral program in kinesiology earning the #6 spot from the Academy of Kinesiology and the  Master of Education in Sport Management (Online)  also ranking #6 by Sports Degrees Online’s Best Sport Management Programs for 2024-25.

PhD Postgraduate research in History

Why choose this course.

The Department of History, Politics and War Studies offers a vibrant and stimulating environment for MPhil/PhD students. The department, which includes the Centre for Historical Research , has a well-established and proven track record of research and dissemination. Staff publish their work widely and aim to bring their research to a wider community.  Our MPhil/PhD students play a key role in our research community and we aim to support your development into researchers, academics or whatever career you aspire to.

The Department prides itself on the levels of support provided to postgraduate research students in the course of their MPhil/PhD journey. Our academics are committed to their subject areas and meet regularly with their supervisees to work closely with them at all stages of the project, from inception to completion.

Postgraduate research students are encouraged to present their research to University academics and fellow PhD students through hosting research seminars. Again, this is an area where our supportive and knowledgeable PhD supervisors are happy to support and advise where needed.

Our postgraduate research students are afforded the opportunity to develop their research skills through participation in training events organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences and the University’s Doctoral College.

What happens on the course?

The PhD programme in the School has the following three milestones:

Examination

Applicants who satisfy the entry requirements are encouraged to complete the online 'Expression of Interest' form. If the initial application is satisfactory, a conditional offer will be issued and a potential supervisor will be allocated who will provide guidance on the research proposal development.

An interview will take place when the final draft of the research proposal is submitted for approval. The granting of the interview does not imply that the applicant will necessarily be admitted to a research degree programme.

Subject to the satisfactory interview and that the Faculty Research Committee (FRC) is satisfied that: a) the research proposal is sound and has the potential to deliver a postgraduate research award; and b) the proposal is appropriately resourced, the applicant will be admitted to the research degree programme.

All students who wish to study for a PhD are required to complete a progression within 18 months (for full-time students) or 36 months (for part-time students).

The student at the progression needs to produce a paper which summarises his/her achievements on the research programme and outlines future research plans (including research methods), and conduct an oral presentation of the paper at a workshop set up for the progression purpose.

An independent assessor, nominated by the FRC, reviews the paper produced, together with supervisors’ assessment, the student’s presentation and other evidence. On this basis, the assessor will provide evaluative comments and recommendations to the FRC. Upon considering all aspects, the FRC may recommend that the student a) proceed as proposed; b) proceed subject to changes or amendments being made, addressing the concerns raised; c) be placed 'at risk'; or d) change the research degree originally sought.

Towards the end of the research programme, the student will be examined on the basis of a thesis and an oral examination (viva voce). Normally two qualified examiners are appointed, at least one of whom is external to the institution. If the student is a member of staff at the University, then a second external examiner will be appointed.

Following the oral examination, the examiners will make recommendations to the University’s Research Award Sub-Committee (RASC) whether the research degree sought can be awarded.

Why Wolverhampton?

Course Fees and Finance

The University is committed to a transparent fee structure , with no hidden costs, to help you make an informed decision. This includes information on what is included in the fee and how fees are calculated and reviewed

  Applicants for a research degree shall normally hold either:

 • a first or upper second class honours degree, or

 • a master’s degree, or

 • evidence of prior practice or learning that is accepted by the Dean of Research.

Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English at least to the level of an IELTS score (or equivalent) of 7.0, with no individual element less than 6.0. The only exemption to this is for students who are not required to do so as per UKVI regulations: https://www.gov.uk/student-visa/knowledge-of-english. 

Financial support for research study:

Before applying, you should consider carefully how you will finance your studies for the duration of your programme, including tuition fees, research support fees and living costs.

Government loans (Home Fee Status):

Government loans are available for postgraduate research students of up to £28,673, to cover fees and living expenses. More information can be found at Doctoral-loans website.

Studying in the UK: Guidance for EU students

For 2021/22 new entrants, EU, other EEA and Swiss nationals will no longer be eligible for home fee status and financial support from Student Finance England.

Self-funded:

We are able to take payments in instalments, to spread out the cost of your studies, and it is possible to switch between full-time and part-time modes of study. For more information go to How to pay.

Postgraduate Research Loyalty Discount:

To students progressing from an undergraduate programme and/or a taught postgraduate programme to a postgraduate research programme, where both courses are University of Wolverhampton Awards.

There is no time limit on how long ago you completed your degree and/or Masters level qualification, as long as the new award is at a higher level.

U.S. News' graduate program rankings include several local, New York State universities

U.S. News & World Report, best known for its annual college rankings, released its 2024 list of ranked graduate programs in business, education, law and nursing on Wednesday, based on data submitted by more than 2,200 programs nationally.

“Deciding where to attend graduate school can be formidable, considering the wealth of schools with distinctive and quality programs,” said LaMont Jones, managing editor for education at U.S. News.

Several local schools, as well as a number of State University of New York campuses, made the lists.

The master's program in nursing at Hofstra University's Northwell School of Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies ranked 38th. Adelphi University's master's program in nursing ranked 92nd and Molloy University came in at 98th. Ranked SUNY master's programs in nursing include Downstate (72), Polytechnic (100) and Binghamton (102).

"We're very proud that Adelphi University's reputation for offering high-quality degree academic and professional programs to our students is growing," said Chris Storm, Adelphi's provost and executive vice president.

U.S. News looked at 15 factors to rank the nursing programs, including an increased emphasis on program size, research and faculty resources.

Hofstra opened a new 75,000-square-foot center in 2023 focused on health care and cutting-edge research to train future nurses and engineers. The $76.8 million Science and Innovation Center includes a fully equipped operating room, intensive care suites, nursing simulation rooms, ambulatory patient rooms and science and bioengineering laboratories.

Charles G. Riordan, Hofstra provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, said this year’s ranking “is a testament to the work and dedication of our faculty, staff, students, alumni in the program and of Hofstra's investment in new state-of-the art facilities.”

Teachers College at Columbia University tied with University of Wisconsin-Madison for the top spot in graduate education programs. Locally, Hofstra's graduate education program ranked 203rd and Molloy University's program in Rockville Centre was listed in a grouping between 237-255. SUNY programs in graduate education included SUNY Buffalo (54), Albany (86) and Binghamton (130).

Evaluations were based on research activity, academic excellence of entering students, faculty resources and opinions on program quality from education school deans and school hiring professionals, according to U.S. News, which also categorized specialties in education from special education to policy.

Rankings of law schools included Hofstra University's Maurice A. Deane School of Law at 130th and the Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center at Touro University in Central Islip at 168th. SUNY Buffalo's law school was ranked at 108.

Successful placement of graduates made up about 60% of the formula used to evaluate law schools.

Several SUNY programs were ranked for graduate business degrees, including SUNY Buffalo (74), Binghamton (90) and Albany (ranked in a grouping of 115-124). Half of the scores were based on academic metrics and half on successful placement and earnings outcomes of their graduates.

The list also broke down rankings by specialty in business, such as accounting and finance. The top schools nationwide were Stanford and Wharton at the University of Pennsylvania.

U.S. News delayed release of its best engineering and medical schools, saying more data analysis is needed. The U.S. News & World Report rankings have been under increasing scrutiny as more elite institutions, such as the law schools at Harvard and Yale, have declined to participate.

AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas at Austin continues to be one of the premier schools for graduate studies, according to U.S. News & World Report’s partial release of its most recent “Best Graduate Schools.” UT made gains in several disciplines, including the College of Education’s jump into the top 10.

U.S. News has delayed release of its engineering, medicine and clinical psychology rankings, areas in which the University has historically achieved No. 1 and top 10 rankings.

Even with the partial release of the graduate rankings, UT maintained its top 10 spot for five colleges and schools: the College of Education (No. 8); the School of Information (No. 5); the Steve Hicks School of Social Work (No. 8); the College of Pharmacy (No. 6); and the Jackson School of Geosciences (No. 7), ranked under Earth Sciences. Three specialties ranked No. 1 in the country: Accounting, Latin American History and Sociology of Population. Overall, the University has 42 graduate schools and specialty programs ranked in the top 10 when combined with previous years.

“These rankings are striking and reflect our ability to continue to attract exceptional faculty and students. Our excellence is evident in our set of more than 40 schools, programs and specialties ranked in the top-10 in this partial release alone, including several that are the best in the country, if not the world,” said President Jay Hartzell. “Our talent is what puts UT at the leading edge of discovery in AI and robotics, life sciences, population research, and many other disciplines that are at the forefront of solving many of the world’s most pressing problems and bettering society.”

Among the highlights in this year’s rankings:

  • The College of Education is now ranked in the top 10, moving up eight spots to No. 8.
  • The McCombs School of Business moved up four ranks to No. 16 overall.
  • The Information Systems MBA program in the McCombs School of Business is ranked No. 4 this year, marking 31 years that it has ranked in the top 5. Accounting has been ranked No. 1 for 18 years.
  • The College of Pharmacy moved up one spot to No. 6. Computer Science moved up one rank to No. 7.
  • The Nursing master’s program rose six spots to No. 14.

U.S. News & World Report’s graduate rankings, which are published separately from the yearly ranking of undergraduate programs, are considered the gold standard of graduate and professional rankings. They are based on surveys of academic leaders and, for select programs, additional quantitative measures including placement test scores, student/faculty ratios, research expenditures, salary by profession and job placement success.

The publication updates some of its specialty rankings each year and republishes the most recent rankings in other areas. The rankings for engineering, medicine and psychology will be released at a later date, according to U.S. News.

USC retains #1 international MBA ranking, climbs in nursing, education

U.s. news rankings show broad-based excellence in graduate programs.

For the 11th straight year, the University of South Carolina has earned the No. 1 ranking in the country for its International MBA program, according to the Best Graduate School rankings released April 9 by U.S. News & World Report. This year marks the 35th consecutive year that the program has ranked in the top three nationally.

“The Darla Moore School of Business’ No. 1-ranked International MBA offers students an interdisciplinary and comprehensive curriculum that prepares them to lead multinational organizations,” said Rohit Verma, the Moore School’s dean. “Our IMBA program is led by the top thought leaders in the international business discipline and delivers high job placement rates and competitive salaries with global corporations.”

The U.S. News graduate program rankings show broad-based excellence at the University of South Carolina, with additional business programs also ranked and significant jumps in nursing and education.

At the Darla Moore School of Business, the graduate-level operations and supply chain program ranked No. 16, up four spots from last year. The Moore School is also ranked No. 3 by Gartner for its undergraduate program. In addition, the professional MBA program is at the No. 19 spot in the latest U.S. News rankings.

The College of Nursing continued a climb it has seen over the past few years, earning the No. 22 spot for its overall master’s program, up from No. 32 last year. The College of Nursing was also ranked No. 1 in January for its online master’s program — for the fourth straight year. The college’s students perform in the top 1 percent nationally on the NCLEX, the national licensure exam for registered nurses.

“We are proud of the work being done by our faculty and staff to create an array of nationally recognized graduate programs, which provide superior education for our students who will become tomorrow’s academic and industry leaders."

The College of Education ranked No. 29 in the category of Best Education Schools, with its graduate programs moving up 11 spots from No. 40 last year. The college has improved by 58 spots in the rankings over the past two years.

In other rankings highlights, the Joseph F. Rice School of Law ranks No. 13 for trial advocacy, up from No. 15 last year and No. 30 for its clinical training programs.

“Graduate education is deeply important to the University of South Carolina, and our continued recognition in U.S. News rankings reflects the university’s culture of academic excellence,” says Provost Donna Arnett. “We are proud of the work being done by our faculty and staff to create an array of nationally recognized graduate programs, which provide superior education for our students who will become tomorrow’s academic and industry leaders.”

The University of South Carolina’s ranked graduate and professional programs include diverse areas of study in the sciences, humanities, technology, engineering, health sciences, law and business. These programs help train graduate students destined to become future leaders in their fields, providing the skilled workforce needed to propel the state’s economy.

USC has more nationally ranked graduate programs than all other colleges and universities in the state combined.

Professional Doctorate Professional Doctorate in Health and Wellbeing

Why choose this course.

This course is designed to develop your capacity to work within a professional context, introducing competent research into the nature of professional practice. Its robust approach to education, a curriculum employing traditional research-based purposes in line with the PhD model while focusing on experienced professional practitioners, imbues values of innovation, managing change and pursuing ideas to fruition into the framework of an expert practitioner. The advanced learning imparted through experiential and IT-based activities, balancing integration in existing work with thinking towards major organisational change, enhances the expertise of graduates to the level of attaining leading roles in clinical practice, management, entrepreneurship and teaching.

Course Modules

In this module students will negotiate an extended piece of research in consultation with a designated supervisor. Students will draw on knowledge of academic literature and research design, philosophies and techniques to identify an appropriate research methodology, and carry out an extended research project relevant to their area of study. Students will produce either a piece of empirical research, or professionally related, applied practice depending on their area of study.

In this module, students will have the opportunity to build on their professional and research knowledge, negotiate extended academic skills necessary to write a proposal, apply for funding, engage with theoretical and methodological literature associated with research and professional development and carry out a piece of independent empirical or theoretical research or an applied practice project. The module prepares students for independent work including the relevant intellectual and practical skills.

In this module, students will have the opportunity to build on their research knowledge and negotiate Level 8 research skills necessary to complete their doctoral studies. The module prepares students for independent work in the domains of research design, methodology, and methods covering relevant intellectual and practical skills. Students will produce a poster and a presentation demonstrating their knowledge of research.

This module aims to assist students to develop their knowledge and understanding of a range of methodological, epistemological and ontological perspectives in order to position themselves within their research endeavours.

In this module students will have the opportunity to gain advanced skills in searching the literature and provides them with a foundation of knowledge on a specified subject pertaining to professional practice. The module prepares them to identify: areas of prior scholarship to prevent duplication and give credit to other researchers inconstancies: gaps in research, conflicts in previous studies and the open questions left from research investigation the need for additional research (justifying their future research) the relationship of literature in the context of its contribution to their chosen topic and to other works The module is designed to assist them in the process of writing a literature review that places their intended research within the context of existing literature, making a case for why further study is needed.

This module aims to build on the rationale developed throughout the programme that forms the basis of the thesis. The purpose is to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and application in relation to the literature focused in the area of the research, the research design and the professional application of the conceptual framework presented. The module will demonstrate the rigour of the study process to enable you to produce work of publishable quality and make an original contribution to the knowledge in the field. The module enables the preparation for construction of the dissertation and viva examination.

For 2021/22 new entrants, EU, other EEA and Swiss nationals will no longer be eligible for home fee status and financial support from Student Finance England.

Postgraduate Research Loyalty Discount:

To students progressing from an undergraduate programme and/or a taught postgraduate programme to a postgraduate research programme, where both courses are University of Wolverhampton Awards.

There is no time limit on how long ago you completed your degree and/or Masters level qualification, as long as the new award is at a higher level.

Several UMass Amherst Graduate Programs Earn National Recognition in 2024 US News & World Report Rankings

Graduate programs in several disciplines at the University of Massachusetts Amherst rank among the best in the country as reported in the 2024 edition of  U.S. News & World Report’s Best Graduate Schools .

Each year, U.S. News ranks more than 800 institutions with a variety of graduate programs in six prominent fields: business, nursing, education, engineering, law and medicine. This year, the engineering, clinical psychology and medical program rankings will be published at a later date. 

In addition, rankings are published periodically for a selection of other disciplines; this year, new updated rankings were published for graduate programs in public affairs, computer science and health fields, including speech-language pathology, public health and clinical psychology. 

The UMass Amherst rankings for 2024 include: 

  • The Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences  ranks the same as last year at No. 24 and also ranks in most of the sub-specialties: artificial intelligence at No. 16, programming language at No. 23 and systems at No. 23. 
  • The  School of Public Health and Health Sciences  climbed 14 spots from last year to No. 29, and it also ranks No. 44 in speech-language pathology. 
  • The  School of Public Policy  ranks No. 52 in public affairs programs. 
  • The  College of Education  ranks No. 79, up from No. 83 last year. 
  • The  Isenberg School of Management’s full-time MBA program moved up 14 spots to No. 72 in the Best Business Schools rankings and the part-time MBA program is ranked No. 45, up two spots from last year.  This year’s methodology placed more emphasis on earnings, facilitated by a new ranking factor that assessed how each school’s post-graduate salaries across different professions compared with other schools’ post-graduate salaries in those professions.

Rankings of other graduate programs were not updated this year, but they were republished in the new guide. They include: 

  • In the  natural sciences —chemistry at No. 51; geology/earth sciences: No. 47; mathematics: No. 55; and physics: No. 55. 
  • In the  natural and life sciences —biological sciences at No. 74, biostatistics at No. 31, psychology at No. 51 and statistics at No. 51. 
  • Fine arts  at No. 89. 
  • In the  social sciences and humanities —English at No. 41, history at No. 48, political science at No. 56, economics at No. 79, and sociology at No. 29, with the sex and gender studies program ranked No. 8.
