  • Learn another language. Use the internet, a book or a family member to help.
  • Do some research and use craft materials to make a Mayan artefact.
  • Explore and record all the wildlife in your garden. Can you turn it in to an investigation and create a results table and conclusion.
  • Write an alternative end for one of your favourite stories.
  • Create a diary for the week, add to it each night. Include as much detail as you can.
  •  Make your own family tree; see if you can add photos or a description for each member of your family.
  • Look at weather maps online and make your own weather forecast. Can you predict next week’s weather?
  • Home dance class – join in with an online dance video.
  • Chromatography experiment – Put felt tip dots on a piece of kitchen roll, dip it in water or add drips of water and watch the colours split and spread.
  • Look at a map and create a route to a family member’s home, write step by step instructions for someone to follow.
  • Learn a simple song in sign language.
  • Invisible ink – use lemon juice and a few drops of water.  Use a paint brush dipped into the lemon juice to write a secret message on paper. Place it on the radiator or in the sun to reveal the hidden message.

Earth and space Year 5

In Year 5 at school, children start learning some amazing things about Earth and space. They begin by studying our planet, Earth. They discover how it’s made up of land, water, and air.

They’ll also learn about the different layers of the Earth, like the crust and the core. Pupils will also explore the fascinating world of rocks and minerals.

Next, take a leap into space. Pupils will learn about our solar system and about asteroids and comets. They’ll find out what makes day and night and why we have seasons.

Pupils will also delve into the wonders of the universe. They’ll learn about stars, galaxies and constellations. It’s mind-blowing for them to think about the billions and billions of stars out there.

Year 5 is all about asking questions and discovering the amazing science of our planet and the vastness of space. It’s a year of endless curiosity and wonder.

The Moon - PowerPoint

The Moon - PowerPoint

In an engaging PowerPoint presentation designed for Year 5 students studying Earth and Space, the topic of the Moon is explored in depth. The presentation aims to educate students on the Moon's movement around the Earth and its various phases. It begins with an introduction to the Moon, describing it as a massive ball of rock, also known as a satellite, that takes approximately 29 days to orbit the Earth. Students learn that the Moon is thought to have originated from a piece of the Earth that broke away after a colossal collision with another celestial body. The Moon's distance from Earth is approximately 250,000 miles, and it has a diameter of around 2,000 miles, which is about a quarter of the Earth's size. The surface of the Moon is covered in craters caused by meteorite impacts, and unlike the Sun, the Moon is not a light source; it is visible from Earth only because it reflects sunlight.

The PowerPoint continues to delve into the Moon's phases, explaining that the Moon is a spherical object and we only see one side of it from Earth. The visible portion of the Moon changes depending on its position relative to the Earth and the Sun. This results in the Moon appearing to grow from a thin crescent to a full moon and then shrinking back to invisibility, a cycle that includes eight distinct phases. The presentation takes a closer look at each phase, from the New Moon, where the Moon is not visible from Earth, to the Full Moon, where the entire face of the Moon is illuminated. As the Moon orbits, it goes through additional phases, including Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter, and Waning Crescent, each phase representing a different portion of the Moon being lit by the Sun. The presentation also includes interactive elements such as videos and quizzes to enhance the learning experience and a practical activity where students can simulate the Moon phases with a ball and a torch in a darkened room.
