However, for a business to thrive there must be some certain level of commitment by the business owner that is to say with the combination of your hard work and the nature of people towards commodity business, you are likely to make it big in the business and again you need to understand how to start a frozen food business . Report has it that the business is becoming acceptable and more people are getting involved, and this alone has made the business to grow even further.

One of the advantages of running a business in Nigeria is the advantage of population, you have much more people willing to buy, that is why it seems even when more people are interested in a particular business, it still thrives, because most times, the businesses on ground that are meant to meet those demands are never enough, hence any new addition is likely to improve the services provided.

Many Nigerian families now reside in the urbanized areas, and most rural settlers are growing into urban area, the implication of this is that there will be shortage of fresh food, like I stated earlier, fresh food can be sort after from cold rooms, there are different categories of fish and birds you can get from these cold rooms, from chicken, turkey, gizzard, fish or other species like catfish of any kind etc.

The business is so lucrative that a kilogram of chicken is priced at N1,250, and the number of people at the frozen food shop will even amaze you, people weren’t even worried about the price but the quality of the frozen products, this simply depicts the nature of the urban life, where everyone is in a hurry with no time to waste.

Not everyone will have the patience to go wait for a live chicken to be killed and processed before taking it home. The frozen food Business plan in Nigeria gives you an edge while planning how to execute your business plan; the truth is that you need a plan to have a business of this nature to be set. Business plan entails proper evaluation of the business potentials and the possible growth when investment is made; another reason for going in with a plan is to ensure that your investment is wasted.

What You Need To Set Up A Cold Room Business

I have carefully outlined the things you will need to run a successful cold room business in Nigeria;

– Write A Business Plan – This is obviously the first thing you should do as an entrepreneur, write a business plan , and then follow the plan the later. The essence of having a plan first is to avoid any kind of failure that may occur in the nearest future. This entails carrying out an extensive research and then writing a feasibility study to that effect, particularly on the subject frozen food business. A business plan for your cold room is the way to go for starters. There are no rules to writing a business plan, you can get one from a professional if you so wish.

– Capital – To successfully establish a cold room business, you need adequate capital for starters. Capital employed will determine if the business is going to be on a large scale or on a small scale. The capital needed is not mainly for starting up the business, you need money to successfully run the business, you could use the frozen food business plan in Nigeria or feasibility study to seek for loan from any issuing house.

– Decide on A Niche – You need to decide on the type of frozen food you want to be known with, there are large cold rooms that house nearly every type of frozen food, depending on your capacity, it is advisable to select the type of frozen food you will be dealing on especially those live stocks , we have the seafood, poultry birds, etc start with food that is in high demand and then continue to add to the list of the food on your sales list.

– Location – That frozen food is in high demand doesn’t mean you should be difficult to locate, most of the cold rooms I know are usually located at either the market or a very visible area where it can be accessed easily. The idea is to maintain a high level of patronage.

– Register With Relevant Association – One thing I have come to terms with is that in Nigeria, every business has its association, and to be safe in conducting your business, you need to register with the required association. This will to a very large extent help your business growth. Some of the notable association includes National foods and Drugs Control (NAFDAC), Ministry of health either at local, state or federal level, Standards Organisation Of Nigeria (SON). Register your business name with Corporate Affairs Commission. Ensure you pay up every kind of levy imposed on members; also pay up other levies imposed by the government .

– Get A Storage System – Storage facilities are important to the survival of the business, get multiple deep freezers, this will be used to store food items. You business plan should itemize the type of freezing you want for your food, the normal freezer or the larger cold room with freezing system. Keeping the food freeze will ensure that the food continues to be fresh until customers buy. Note that bad storage facility could lead to bad food and could chase potential and old customers away.

– Power Supply Generator – There must be constant power supply, since you are dealing with food that gets spoilt, if one of the food gets spoilt as a result of power outage, it could affect others in the same storage facility, hence the need to have alternatively power supply on standby.

– Equipment Needed For Frozen Food Business in Nigeria – Here are some of the items you need to begin with; freezer, Knives, Table, Cabinet, Chisel, Wooden boards, Waste bin, Chair etc

– Device a Customer Retention Strategy – The business has to make profit and the customers are the ones to ensure that profit is made, here is what you do, ensure that you know the kind of customers you want and then campaign towards having them come patronize you, this can be achieved through publicity via social media, fliers etc.

Finally, you need a frozen food business plan in Nigeria to have a proper frozen food business in place.

How To Run A Successful Frozen Foods Business In Nigeria

Are you an entrepreneur looking to break into the food business? Have you ever thought of running a frozen food business in Nigeria? If so, you’ve come to the right place!

This article will show you how to start and run a successful frozen food business in Nigeria. We’ll cover everything from choosing the right suppliers to finding and assessing the right market. We’ll also look at some of the key success factors for running a profitable frozen food business and some of the challenges and pitfalls you may encounter along the way.

If you’re ready to start your new venture, let’s jump in!

What Are Frozen Foods?

Frozen Chicken Wings

Frozen foods are any type of food that has been preserved and stored at a temperature below the freezing point of water. Think of it as a way to keep food fresh for longer periods without it going bad or losing its nutritional value.

Among Nigeria’s most popular frozen foods are fish, chicken, turkey, prawns, and meat (including pork). Hence, the frozen food industry is a business that deals in the freezing, storing, and selling of frozen food products.

Start-Up Costs for a Frozen Food Business

When starting a frozen food business, there are several costs to consider. The upfront costs of launching a new business can be divided into two major components.

The first component is the start-up cost of getting your business running. This cost includes things like purchasing equipment, inventory, transportation, and any other costs associated with getting your operations up and running. Depending on what size operation you are running, these costs can range from anywhere from 200,000 – 2,000,000 naira.

The second component is related to the ongoing operating costs associated with keeping your business running on a daily basis. These include things such as labour costs, rent/utilities for your facility, advertising expenses, insurance, and any other recurring fees that occur in order to keep the business functioning in its best state. Again, depending on the size of your operation, these fees will vary greatly but could range from anything between 10,000-150,000 naira per month.

Running a frozen food business in Nigeria can be a lucrative and rewarding venture. So, if you’re looking to break into the industry, here’s what you need to know in order to make a success out of it.

Research Your Market

If you’re planning to run a successful frozen food business in Nigeria, it’s absolutely essential that you research the market you’ll be entering, as well as any competitors that you might face.

Knowing what’s already out there is the first step to standing apart from the crowd, so put aside some time to research other frozen food businesses and products available and identify where your business can fit in. You should also consider possible obstacles or challenging areas of the market.

To ensure that your business is a success, ask yourself these questions:

  • Have I researched my target audience?
  • What needs do my potential customers have that my product can meet?
  • What will differentiate my products from those of my competitors?
  • Are there any seasonality or pricing trends in the frozen food industry?
  • Are there certain foods that are more successful than others?

By answering these questions, you’ll have a better understanding of how to approach setting up your frozen food business and anticipate any potential issues further down the line.

Choose the right location

A good location for your store is essential for success. Find out about the population density in each area you are considering, as well as the average income of potential customers. You want to ensure that there is enough demand for frozen foods in the area and that people have enough money to buy your products.

Choosing the right location for your frozen food business is one of the key factors you need to consider to run a successful business. Here’s what you want to look for:

Easy and fast access to the cold room and equipment

You need convenient access for delivery personnel and maintenance workers who need to repair and refill the coolers or freezers, so your selection should be close to your business’s operational areas.

Highly populated environment or close to the market

As much as possible, locate your business in an area where there are many people in the vicinity. This way, you’re more likely to get customers who will purchase your frozen goods regularly. Being close to a busy market is a bonus too.

Regular power supply

Power supply issues are common in Nigeria, so it would be wise to choose a location that has a regular power supply available. This will help ensure that you can keep your products stored at all times.

Ease of waste disposal

The production process may require regular waste disposal, so make sure it is easy and convenient when you choose a place that can accommodate dumping easily.

Adequate means of Transportation

Having good roads and highways nearby can help speed up your delivery process and be cost-effective too. Choose a location that has good roads with easy access for larger vehicles like trucks when it comes time for stocking up or delivering goods regularly.

Obtain Necessary Licences & Permits

Before you can begin selling frozen food, you need to make sure you have all the right licences and permits needed. Generally speaking, the type of licence and permit you need will be determined by your business structure and the specific area where you plan to operate.

The steps involved may include the following:

  • Register your business with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). This process should take three weeks, though it could take longer.
  • Get a Tax Identification Number (TIN) from the Federal Inland Revenue Service. This helps identify your business for purposes of taxation and other financial matters.
  • Business premises must also be registered in order to obtain your operational licence from any relevant government agency or body in charge of overseeing frozen food businesses in Nigeria, such as the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) or food safety agency in Nigeria like NAFDAC or SONCAP if applicable to your type of product/service before you can begin operations.

Get the Necessary Equipment and Storage Options

In order to run a successful frozen food business in Nigeria, you’ll need the right equipment and storage options. Here are some of the necessary things you should have:

A good quality freezer is essential for selling frozen food. Not only will it keep your products fresh and safe, but it’ll also help increase sales as customers will be more likely to purchase food that has been stored properly. Look for freezers that utilize the latest technology, such as adjustable temperature settings, low energy consumption, and digital controllers.

Cold room (If your business is Large scale)

One of the most important requirements is a cold room. A cold room is a chamber designed to maintain a constant low temperature and is essential for ensuring proper storage of all frozen food products. Your cold room should be large enough to accommodate the amount of food you intend to stock, plus an allowance for future expansion.

Protective Clothing

If you plan on selling frozen foods in Nigeria, it’s important to wear protective clothing while handling them to prevent contamination. This includes aprons, gloves, and hats. These items help protect both you and your customers from hazardous bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli that can be found in raw frozen foods.

Storage Containers

When storing your products, always use clean and safe containers that have been approved for food storage. Choose containers made of durable plastics or stainless steel, as these are less likely to break down over time, preventing any contamination from occurring. Additionally, label all containers clearly to avoid confusion when restocking or restocking shelves.

Running Water System

To ensure optimal hygiene when handling the food, you’ll need access to running water and appropriate drainage facilities. You can also install water storage tanks for backup and emergency water supply in case of power outages or shortages in the public water supply system.

A waste bin within easy reach is necessary for disposing of packaging materials and waste produced during daily activities within the shop or store premises. This bin should be large enough to accommodate all of the waste generated and positioned where it won’t cause a nuisance or health hazard.

Quality Wooden or Stainless Steel Tables, Buckets, and Chairs

You’ll need quality wooden or stainless steel tables, buckets, chairs, etc., for use when preparing and cutting frozen food, making sure that everything is kept spotless at all times!

Standard Weighing Scale

You’ll need to get a standard weighing scale used in both online and offline retail that you can use to measure the accurate weight of the products you’re selling. This will be important for your clients and customers.

Manual/Electric Cutting Machine

You’ll also need either a manual cutting machine or an electric cutting machine, depending on the type of frozen food product you’re selling. The manual machines work with wood and can easily cut through frozen food items like fish, chicken, and turkey. Electric machines, on the other hand, offer better speed and precision when cutting meat or bones.

Panel Truck or Wheelbarrow

It’s also important to have a panel truck or wheelbarrow to carry heavy loads of frozen food items for delivery purposes if required. This ensures that frozen foods are delivered in good condition to customers and clients.

Hand Gloves, Apron, Plastic or Rubber Shoes, and (Personal Protective Equipment)

It is important to have hand gloves, an apron made of waterproof material as well as plastic or rubber shoes when handling frozen food items, as this will help reduce contact with cold temperatures, which may affect your hands and feet negatively if not properly.

By investing in these key pieces of equipment and storage options for your frozen food business in Nigeria, you’ll be well on your way to running a successful operation!

Find and Choose A Supplier

Once you’ve decided on the type of frozen food products that you want to sell, the next step is to find a supplier. This can be a tricky step as you don’t want to end up with low-quality product offerings or, worse yet, end up dealing with a company that isn’t reliable or has been accused of unethical practices.

There are several things that you should look out for when finding a supplier to ensure you get the best quality product :

The most important thing is to make sure that your supplier offers high-quality products. If possible, it is best to visit the supplier in person (as opposed to relying on digital images or video calls). This will give you an opportunity to assess the cleanliness of the facility and ensure that they have established proper storage and preparation procedures.

It will also be important for you to shop around and compare prices across different suppliers. You don’t want to settle for a supplier just because they offer rock-bottom prices, as this usually means low-quality goods. Ensure you look at all factors, such as prices, quality, availability, and delivery times, before committing to a particular supplier.

Lastly, it’s always a good idea to read reviews from other customers who have used the same supplier in the past. This will give you an idea of how efficient and reliable they are. Luckily, we live in an age where there are plenty of online review platforms, so it won’t take much effort for you.

Advertise & Market Your Business

When it comes to running a successful frozen foods business in Nigeria, you need to make sure your products are reaching the right customer. To do this, you’ll need a solid strategy for promoting your business. Below are some strategies that can help:

Use Social Media

Make use of popular social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to advertise your products and create an online presence for your business. You can post pictures of your products, attract customers with giveaways and discounts and keep them updated on new arrivals or promotions.

Take Advantage of Word-of-Mouth Advertising

The power of word-of-mouth advertising should not be underestimated. Ask existing customers to spread the word about your business and incentivize them by offering discounts or giveaways for referrals. This is a great way to reach potential customers that might not have otherwise heard of your business.

Start an Email List

Build an email list with direct contact details of current and potential customers so you can keep them up-to-date with promotions and news on new arrivals or services you offer. You can collect emails through sign-up forms on social media platforms or via QR codes printed on promotional materials like flyers or brochures.

Focus On Quality

Your customers will come back if they’re satisfied with the quality of your frozen food products. Focus on delivering high quality at all times and make sure customer feedback is always taken into consideration, so you know the areas where you need to improve the product quality.

Benefits of Running a Frozen Food Business

When it comes to running a frozen food business in Nigeria, there are plenty of benefits to consider. Here are 6 of the benefits you can achieve with this business:

  • High-Profit Margins : By selling frozen food products at retail prices, you can earn a higher profit margin than selling other items. Frozen foods generally require little preparation and offer longer shelf lives than many other products.
  • Reduced Food Waste : When working with frozen foods, you have the benefit of reducing food waste, as it has a longer shelf life compared to fresh produce and other grocery items. This means that more of your inventory will stay intact simply because it won’t go bad as quickly.
  • Time Savings : A major advantage of having a frozen food business is that it requires less preparation time than cooking with fresh food products. You can easily thaw out the product, heat it up in the microwave or oven, and serve it!
  • Year-round Availability : A great benefit of selling frozen goods is that you can sell products year-round as opposed to seasonal trends with fresh produce or canned goods. Customers will be able to come in and purchase items regardless of the season, which ensures your store stays profitable.
  • Lower Inventory Costs : You don’t need large amounts of fridge space since all products are pre-frozen and ready for sale once they reach your store or warehouse facility! This allows smaller businesses access to becoming profitable without needing large amounts of equipment or inventory space, to begin with!
  • Increased Selection : Selling frozen foods gives you access to more selection options.

Challenges of Running a Frozen Food Business in Nigeria

Running a frozen food business in Nigeria can be a rewarding and profitable venture. However, there are several challenges that come along with it. Here’s a look at some of the challenges you should be aware of before running a business in frozen foods:

Food Spoilage

One of the main challenges of running a frozen food business in Nigeria is food spoilage. Frozen foods need to be kept chilled at all times and stored properly to ensure the quality and freshness of the food. If any part of the supply chain is compromised or there are interruptions, then the food could spoil, leading to significant losses for your business.

Cold Room Breakdown

The cold rooms used to store frozen foods can break down due to various reasons, such as malfunctioning equipment, power surges or overloads, improper maintenance, or inadequate insulation. This puts your inventory of frozen goods at risk and could lead to significant losses if not dealt with quickly.

Unstable Power Supply

Unstable power from PHCN is another challenge to consider when running a frozen foods business in Nigeria. Without a consistent power supply, operations may come to a halt as the cold rooms could become too warm and thus cause all kinds of problems, such as food spoilage, reduced shelf life, etc.

The handling and storage of goods must also adhere to strict hygiene standards in order to prevent contamination which can lead to serious health issues if not managed properly. It is important that you adhere strictly to hygiene standards throughout your operation, as any breach could cost your business dearly in terms of fines and/or a bad reputation.

Improper staffing

If you aren’t careful about selecting qualified staff to work in your store, they could make mistakes and cause more harm than good. Ensure that all employees have been trained, so they can understand how to handle the food appropriately.

Poor transportation

Transporting frozen goods across state lines or even within states can be problematic if the vehicles used are not well-equipped with insulated containers or other appropriate technologies for keeping cargo cold during transport. Make sure that any delivery vehicles used are up-to-date and adhere to all necessary regulations when transporting goods between locations.

Setting up a successful frozen foods business in Nigeria is no easy feat. To be successful, you will need to have the right business plan, source quality ingredients, develop the right price and promotion strategies, and stay up-to-date with the latest trends in the industry. Additionally, it’s important to focus on maintaining high standards of hygiene and food safety, as well as providing excellent customer service.

Ultimately, by following these tips, you can run a successful frozen food business in Nigeria that is both profitable and rewarding. With the right preparation and dedication, you can build a business that will become a thriving success.

How to Start a Lucrative Frozen Food Business in Nigeria

' src=

If you want to learn about the lucrative frozen food business, this blog post is for you.

The market for frozen foods is expanding at an astonishing double-digit rate as more people stay at home. So, if you possess true culinary expertise or simply a few ideas you’ve always wanted to share with the world, you may launch your own frozen food company and capture a portion of this booming market in Nigeria.

First, a frozen food business in Nigeria involves selling prepared and preserved food. It involves the freezing, keeping, and trading of frozen food products.

Technically, freezing food boosts the value and shelf life of the majority of perishable commodities. But more than simply concepts are needed to be successful. From an entrepreneurial standpoint, you’ll need to know what you’re getting into.

In many regions of the world, but particularly in Nigeria, the frozen food sector is a very lucrative business due to a rise in the demand for convenient foods and population expansion.

The industry is not yet saturated because there aren’t many people involved. The frozen foods business sells fish, turkey, prawns, chicken, gizzards, and some vegetables for eating.

This is a business that can expand rapidly in the least amount of time. Many individuals live sophisticated lifestyles and would prefer previously cooked, cleaned, and chopped meat than to go through all the strains.

The greatest option for those who cannot or do not wish to slaughter chicken is to purchase it already prepared. Food is frequently prepared with frozen ingredients for ceremonies like birthday celebrations, marriages, naming ceremonies, convocations, festivals, etc.

Frozen food is frequently consumed in establishments including hotels, restaurants, bars, and fast food restaurants. Fried fish and chicken vendors are another group of individuals that primarily deal in some of these frozen meals.

The frozen food industry has the potential to expand rapidly. The sophisticated stress-free elite and frequent occasions like birthday parties, marriages, naming ceremonies, convocations, and festivals will keep the frozen food investor in the business because the target client is constantly accessible.

In reality, if you want to launch your own frozen food company, this article will walk you through the procedures to establish a successful frozen food company.

HOW TO A START FROZEN FOOD BUSINESS IN NIGERIA

Before launching your frozen food business, there are numerous things to consider. Several of these include:

  • Create a business plan and register your company.

Create a plan for how you will run your company. The strategy should account for the company’s continued existence and growth. Plan strategies for surviving in the face of opposition.

To assist in developing a proper plan, you might consult a business expert. It’s the place where you outline every single aspect of the company, from the location to the alleged profit projected at each transaction.

Additionally, you must register your company with the appropriate organization. Every company registered with this association has its affairs managed by it. They also provide credit options for their customers. Before joining, be sure you can manage their fees.

  • Select a suitable location

Your business should be close to food restaurants to increase sales. When they need frozen goods and the like, they start to turn to you.

Students who prefer frozen foods are also more likely to be found in an academic setting.

It’s also accessible in front of your residences or marketplaces. Do not conceal where you are. Don’t change your mind about your choice of location because your firm has stagnated for a year or two. A potential market exists everywhere.

  • Select your preferred frozen food brand

You should focus on one area of business rather than trying your hand at everything. Various foods can be sold frozen. fruits, fish, and poultry items. Foods strong in protein are typically more in demand than fruits. However, it relies on the preferences of the patrons at that establishment.

It’s a good idea to stick with poultry-based dishes if you must. However, you should have separate refrigerators for fish and poultry if you plan to blend the two types of foods. This is because of its foul stench, which if placed next to your chicken will transfer.

  • Use the appropriate marketing strategy

After completing the previous processes, it is now time to focus on marketing.

First, your surroundings play a role. Red and poultry meat would flourish in regions with more children, while seafood and poultry are the most in-demand proteins in locations with more senior citizens.

This is why it’s important to assess your surroundings and understand who your target market is. Keep in mind that they are the heart of your company. Now, to increase their recurring patronage in neighbourhoods with hotels and bars, you can offer logistics or door delivery.

You can be so kind as to offer after-sales services to bulk buyers as well to keep their business. To guarantee that your neighbourhood is aware of your business, you can even run advertisements. This will result in a large number of orders requiring your attention.

  • Verify the functionality of your storage system.

This is the foundation of the enterprise because if you don’t have a system for storing goods, you shouldn’t be talking about the frozen food industry.

Make arrangements for a cooling system or a refrigerator. You shouldn’t purchase anything more than a refrigerator if your business is modest. In this manner, the costs wouldn’t be excessive. In this industry, whether you succeed or fail depends on your storage system.

By keeping the food frozen, this storage mechanism keeps it fresh. Choose high-quality storage solutions.

FROZEN FOOD BUSINESS: WHY YOU SHOULD START ONE

  • High demand exists for it.
  • People save time, especially those who want to cook quickly, by using frozen goods because they are already prepared. Consequently, it is preferred over raw ones.
  • The profit margin is high.
  • Employing two people to manage the company will allow you to run it as a second firm.
  • There is no requirement for a certificate to operate a frozen food business, thus anyone can do it.

TYPES OF EQUIPMENT REQUIRED FOR THE FROZEN FOOD INDUSTRY

Equipment like freezers, tables, generators, knives, aprons, trash cans, water, and so on are necessities before opening a business.

In our nation, finding electricity is a constant challenge. You should make proper plans for an alternative as you are aware that your products are perishable.

On your property, a backup generator should be operational. This generator needs to be both portable and high voltage.

Additionally, choosing diesel generators saves more money than using that fuel. If you don’t do this, there will be deterioration, loss, and perhaps a strong odour.

Don’t put off taking the essential action until you start losing money.

Knives, chairs, tables, trash cans, and other items are provided for convenience and hygiene. Don’t forget to provide a backup water supply.

STARTING A FROZEN FOOD BUSINESS: HOW MUCH DO I NEED?

N200,000 naira is acceptable when starting small. However, you may need as much as N500,000 naira if you want to start big.

PROFITABILITY OF THE FROZEN FOOD INDUSTRY

The company is extremely profitable. More so, if you are selling them in pieces. If you buy a carton of chicken for N10,000 and sell it for #11,000, and you sell five cartons in a day, that comes to N5,000 in chicken sales. What about turkey, a gizzard, a snail, some prawns, etc? Of course, you’ll sell more in a single day than that.

If everything is thoroughly planned and carried out, you may expect to make at least N100, 000 every month and eventually more as time goes on. Someone claimed he used the money from his frozen food business to fund his education, pay rent, provide for his family, and do many other things.

Make your store inviting for customers to enter, and put benches or chairs there so they can sit and wait while you wrap their goods. Cut the chicken or turkey carefully to prevent wasting them by accidentally shredding the food. For this reason, it’s important to regularly sharpen the knife and chisel.

If you short-change somebody, you will lose consumers, therefore, make sure your scale is properly positioned. After wrapping the frozen food in a nylon bag, use newspapers or any other paper, especially if it’s chicken or turkey that can spill blood.

THE DIFFICULTIES FACED BY THE NIGERIAN FROZEN FOOD INDUSTRY

  • Nigerian frozen food companies confront many difficulties, but energy poses the biggest risk.
  • The need for power to chill frozen foods is non-negotiable because they are perishable items.
  • For the sake of the frozen food industry, having a functional backup generator is best due to the country’s epileptic electrical supply.
  • The availability of supplies is also a problem because not everyone can produce everything from scratch.
  • Smuggling is not a recent development in the industry, but because it is prohibited, it has replaced other sources as the nation’s main supplier of frozen food.
  • The price of importing increases the buying rate, which then raises the selling rate, and this isn’t good for consumers.

WRAPPING THINGS UP

If you stick to it, the frozen food industry will quickly make you wealthy. You can hire staff to manage additional stores that you open. And since you are aware of the potential revenue from the business, it will be difficult for anyone to defraud you.

8. Get a Shop

How To Start Frozen Foods Business In Nigeria Or Africa: Complete Guide

How To Start A Lucrative Frozen Foods Business In Nigeria Or Africa: The Complete Guide | Image: Iseowo

The frozen foods business is a very profitable venture in many parts of the world, mainly due to growth in population and demand for convenience foods. The business is far from being saturated because not many people are engaged in it. Frozen foods venture has to do with the sale of fish, turkey, prawns, chicken, gizzards and certain vegetables for consumption.

The global market for frozen foods was valued at the tune of USD 291.3 billion in 2019 and is expected to rise at a CAGR of 5.14% during the forecast period to reach USD 282.50 billion by 2023. The rising value of Ready-to-Eat (RTE) foods products stems as a result of hectic lifestyles among working-class individuals on a global level. Moreover, the progressive spending on shelf-stable foods among consumers is predicted to expand the market for frozen foods soon. International trade of these items has gained popularity as a result of rising demand, complemented by improved transportation facilities. China, Russia, the United States, Chile and Norway had the highest export value of frozen foods in 2019.

Nigeria’s frozen foods market size is projected to grow during the 2020-2026 forecast period. The ready-to-eat (RTE) section is expected to gain a more significant market share in terms of revenue over the coming years, as they are convenient to make and involve less time and efforts. Subsequently, the market for frozen fruits and vegetable is anticipated to increase due to the dynamic lifestyle of people and rising demand for a healthy source of nutrition. The frozen foods market is a potential market in every part of Nigeria but it is more convenient to start up in riverine areas such as the Niger Delta region and in other major towns and cities like Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan, etc.

However, the nation heavily relies on imports to meet its consumption rate rather than local production. Reports have it that Nigeria requires about 1.5 million tonnes of fish annually and is expected to meet FAO’s recommended minimum fish consumption rate of 12.5 kilograms per head yearly to satisfy basic protein needs. Imports just on fish alone are nothing short of 400,000 tonnes to bridge the fish supply-demand gap. There is, therefore, a massive deficit in the Nigerian RTE sector. A close look at policies supporting the production of sustainable crops to boost livestock rearing, by the government can quickly remedy this problem.

Notwithstanding, the frozen foods business is one business that can increase within the shortest possible time. The target market is always available: the sophisticated, stress- immune elites and ceremonies such birthday parties, weddings, naming ceremony, convocation, festivals, which are recurrent events will always keep the frozen foods investor in business. Therefore, if you are looking to start up your own frozen foods business, this article will provide you with the step-by-step guide.

Dekoolar Blast-frozen-foods How to run a viable frozen foods business in Nigeria - Complete expert guide

As an industry player since the past 25 years, we keenly observed that most of the information available on the internet about this topic is from novices, and those who have no experience, or practical knowledge about the business. Hence the misinformation, and half-baked blog posts which merely touched on the basics.

As a leading manufacturer of cold room and Industrial freezers in Nigeria, which are principal prerequisite to start any profitable frozen foods business, you’ll agree with us that our perspective is very important to help you understand the business. For instance, most guides provide little or no information on Cold storage room which principally is the engine to drive the business.

In lay terms, cold room is the insulated and refrigerated cabin, room, chamber, enclosure or warehouse into which you will stock, then freeze and store perishable poultry or seafood products under negative temperature.

The suitable cold room for frozen foods, especially for fish, meat, turkey, chicken and ice cream, is operated under a well-regulated temperature ranging from -18 o c to -20 o c.

However, if you will operate on a commercially large scale, you may need to also acquire a blast freezer, operating within -25 0 C to 40 0 C, which can help you to fast-freeze the foods within minutes, and then transfer for cold storage inside a cold room.

What are the risks involved in frozen foods business in Nigeria?

Knowing the attendant risks or challenges in frozen foods business, or any business whatsoever, and preparing to effectively mitigate them will make or mar your success in the venture. The following are major risks associated to frozen food business and their possible solutions.

Unstable Power (Electricity) Supply

  • Plan to use backup Generator (Gasoline or Solar)
  • Or identify a business location with steady electricity supply.

Power supply is one of the most important factors you must get right if you must invest in frozen foods business in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, Onitsha, or anywhere in Nigeria. Obviously, you are aware power is not stable – hence you must prepare to acquire and run power generator.

Most cold rooms and Industrial freezers in Nigeria are powered with three phase engines. You will need to buy three phase stabilizers to complement whatever voltage the public power supply is providing you.

Also, you need to factor the cost of running alternative power into your business startup and running cost outlay, else you may run into troubles if not properly captured.

Cold room break down

  • Having robust maintenance service partnership/ responsive team
  • Endeavor to have a backup unit

Technically speaking, cold room should not be installed close to any source of extreme heat. This is because cold room is designed to operate effectively around ambient temperature. Cold room is better built under a covered and secured environment, and adequately floored space, for optimum performance.

Also, if a cold room must be installed in a dust-prone environment, it must be serviced regularly as the dust will always hamper the cold room from functioning well. Importantly, a well-insulated cold room is idea in a tropical climate such as we have in Nigeria. This is why most imported cold rooms don’t last long in Nigeria before breaking down.

Hence the reason De Koolar models are the best-selling cold rooms for frozen foods business in Nigeria – because of the quality installation and rugged engines to withstand Nigerian operating climate.

Food spoilage

  • Use FIFO (first in, first out – products handling is a very good practice) Technique
  • Proper stacking is very important, don’t block the air flow system in/out of your cold room.
  • Keep operational log sheet for effective monitory and fault detection on your cold room

Useful Tips on frozen foods sourcing

At the point of product purchase/stocking from your suppliers, don’t be in a hurry, diligently confirm the state or quality of the product before buying or allowing into your cold room facility.

– Properly source for your goods. Ensure government policy is adhered to strictly if your business must succeed, avoid pitfall of contraband supply.

Useful Tips: Frozen foods are regulated under an arm of NAFDAC, and Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON). However, there is no stringent rule or regulation that is capable of posing any form of treat for now. Ensure your business is registered with relevant municipal authorities to protect yourself from harassment.

– A lot of perishable items get damaged on transit as a result of poor cooling. Industrial freezers in Nigeria help ensure your products a perfectly frozen before transportation over long supply distance.

This will help protect you from legal problems and make your business look more professional.

To register your business, you will need to go to the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). They will help you choose a name for your business and give you a certificate to show that you are officially registered.

4. Find a Suitable Location

When it comes to choosing a location for your frozen food business, there are a few key factors to consider.

First and foremost, you want to look for a location that is easily accessible to both customers and suppliers.

This means choosing a spot that is close to major roads and highways, and ideally situated near your target market.

In addition to accessibility, you also want to consider factors like safety, security, and visibility.

For example, you may want to choose a location that is well-lit and easily visible from the road, or one that has ample parking for customers.

5. Invest in Storage Facilities

It’s important to have good storage for frozen food.

You need refrigerators and freezers that can hold your products and keep them from spoiling. When you pick your storage, think about how much you need to store and how much electricity it will use.

You should also pick storage that has good features like temperature control and is easy to clean. Take care of your storage by cleaning it and fixing it when it’s broken.

This will help your frozen food stay good and keep your business running well.

6. Develop a Marketing Plan

As you embark on the exciting journey of developing a marketing plan, there are several tips to keep in mind to ensure that your plan is not only effective but also engaging.

Here are some key considerations to keep in mind:

  • Figure out who your customers are.

  • Choose where you want to advertise (newspapers, radio, social media, etc.).
  • Make your ads interesting and show why your business is different from others.
  • Put your ads out there and check if they’re working. If not, change them.
  • Talk to your customers on social media and reply to their messages.
  • Doing all of this will help more people know about your business and become customers.

7. Hire Staff.

When hiring staff, you may bring in individuals with varying levels of knowledge about the business. If they have little to no knowledge, you will need to provide training.

The skilled and knowledgeable staff will help your business operate more smoothly.

They can also provide guidance and mentorship to newer employees, which will help develop their skills.

Make sure you’re clear on what you’re looking for in a candidate, offer competitive compensation, and benefits, and make sure they’re a good fit for your company.

And of course, conduct interviews and background checks to be sure they’re the right person for the job.

8. Provide Excellent Customer Service.

To ensure customer satisfaction, it’s important to provide excellent customer service.

Another thing that could be really helpful is offering discounts and promotions to your customers.

And don’t forget to keep those communication channels open and effective, and quickly address any complaints or issues they may have.

By prioritizing customer service, you will build strong relationships with your customers and increase the chances of repeat business and positive word-of-mouth recommendations.

Banks and other financial institutions can be valuable sources of funding for entrepreneurs looking to start a business.

Besides, considering the stress less simple way of life then, to the present hustling and bustling life we live today, they did not really need frozen foods.

Those times are far gone in the urban areas and frozen foods are less expensive and time saving than the fresh produce.

While cooking freshly made food and storing in the refrigerator in batches, automatically labeling these meals as frozen foods, they are not really exempted when talking about frozen food sales in Nigeria.

Yes! There is such a thing as frozen food biz in Nigeria, how about shedding more light on the question…

You see fish sellers on the increase daily with their carton packed basin, mounted on their heads and you wonder how these people endure such sun beat for this kind of frozen food sales.

Get Guidance

“ It is important to know what you are getting into before jumping into it, else you find yourself jumbling things up”.

Number one thing to do when you want to start a frozen food business in Nigeria is to get adequate knowledge of the business.

It would be an advantage to get practically trained in the food business and not just from your desk and chair with paper and a pen.

This will help shed more light on things you are to do when starting your frozen foods business, the right source of supply, the equipment you are to get first, what association to join and lots more.

Have a Business Plan

A business plan gives you an oversight on the frozen food business.

It entails the following:

  • Your frozen food business name.
  • Identification of the magnitude of your frozen food business.
  • Product Line: This is the part that speaks on the type of frozen food product you want to sell.

An elderly population will prefer more sea foods considering their health.

More frozen poultry products and animal-based products will sell with a younger population.

  • Location: This cannot be excluded from your business plan. The success of your frozen food business is peculiar to its location.

  • Cutlasses \ axes \ knives.

  • What is your estimated total cost?
  • How can you raise this amount of money?
  • Do you have up to that in your account or are you getting a loan?
  • Or do you have someone that wants to invest in your frozen food business?

Wherever your frozen food shop will be, ensure it is somewhere accessible to your target market.

In as much as it is to be in urban areas try to ensure it is in close proximity to your customers.

There is no point going for frozen food when the timle it will take you to get it is enough time to start and finish an all round freshly made food.

God bless Nigeria, we have an association for everything even cleaners dey association.

These associations come with their benefits so get registered with your location frozen food association.

Get registered under the necessary bodies especially if your frozen food business will be on the large scale or you will be importing.

Marketing and promotion

A good business will rot in the shadows with no marketing strategy.

Although most frozen food business market themselves it will not be so bad to have a signboard or nice looking placard in front of your shop.

Advertise your frozen food business, promote it and increase your customer base. Now your frozen food business is good to go.

Challenges of Frozen Food Business In Nigeria

Of all the challenges frozen food businesses face in Nigeria, the major threat is electricity.

Frozen foods are perishable goods and the need for electricity to refrigerate is not negotiable.

The epileptic supply of electricity in the country is unreliable for the frozen food business so the best is to have a working stand-by generator.

Another challenge is supply as not everyone can be their own scratch source of supply.

Although smuggling is not new in the business, it is illegal and this has sort of being the major source of frozen food in the country.

The cost of smuggling it in to the country increases the buying rate, hence, the selling rate and this might not be too good for business.

In frozen food business, storage is the key. Whether your business will prosper or crumble depends on how reliable or inefficient your storage facility is. Make you invest in high quality refrigerators; if possible, you can buy the brand new ones.

When your seafood and chicken is frozen like the ones above, they stay fresh and healthy until you sell to consumers.

8. Get Adequate Power Supply Generator

Electricity problem is one of the major challenges businesses face in the country today. Remember you are dealing with perishable goods and so, as you want to start your business , think of getting a generating set for power supply, otherwise you will be running at a loss, as some of the foods may perish when there is no power to preserve them.

Of course nobody will want to spend his/her money on rotten food. In buying generator, go for one that can carry high voltage but still portable. It less expensive to manage generating sets that uses petrol than diesel, so go for the former than the later.

Equipment: Make a list of all the necessary equipment you will need for a start up. And start buying them in bits. You can get some of those equipment as fairly used or cheaper ones but still new.

9. Build You Logistics – Home Delivery

This can actually be a means of attracting more customers to you. Some people like after sales delivery, and if your business can offer that , it is an edge over your competitors. After-sales delivery could be home delivery of goods bought by your customer. It is worthy of note here that you may not be able to do this for all your customers because of the extra cost you may incur in this process.

It is therefore advisable that you do this for customers that do bulk purchases. Selling frozen foods often involves several delivery systems. You may decide to market your products online and deliver them in freezer trucks, pedal your foods to  businesses and homes, or to stores and restaurants where they are needed. Make available functional telephone numbers  so that your customers can easily reach you through it for any inquiry.

10. Equipment For Frozen Food Business in Nigeria

Freezer Capital Table Chairs Knives (Big and small) Chisel Generator Work space Fan/air conditioner Sales person maybe one for a start Water container Cartons of food to be sold Wooden boards Aprons Cabinet Bowls or buckets Waste bin, etc

11. Advantages of Frozen Food in Nigeria

Frozen produce helps to maintain the flavor and nutrients of the food

It is cost effective, because frozen foods keep longer than fresh refrigerated foods because the freezing process suspends enzyme activity that causes the food to rot.

It provides safety for storage, because freezing suspends microbial and fungal activity in the food. As long as the food remains frozen, it is safe.

It provides convenience. Frozen foods give busy people a way to feed themselves and their families with healthy meals in minutes.

Sometimes frozen foods are a better choice than fresh, such as in cases of food outbreaks and when there is a shortage of fresh food.

12. Disadvantages of Frozen Food Business

Frozen foods usually contain too much salt

Frozen, prepared foods, like most other prepared foods, contain unacceptably high levels of sodium that can increase risk of developing high blood pressure and heart disease in people

Frozen foods end up being mushy and soft, especially vegetables and most fruits lose their crisp texture once frozen, even if you cook them only briefly.

Frozen food many at times has a waterlogged taste.

Vital food nutrients such as Vitamin C and the B vitamins are likely to be lost  in frozen fruits and vegetables,

Levels of polyphenoic substances, which act as antioxidants to protect body cells from damage, also are lower in frozen fruits than fresh

Freezer burn which happens to frozen foods reduces food flavour but that does not mean the food is not safe for the body.

Cold Room / Frozen Food

SCROLL DOWN TO THE END OF THIS ARTICLE TO SEE HOW YOU CAN OBTAIN OUR COLD ROOM / FROZEN FOOD BUSINESS PLAN IN NIGERIA

A lot of businesses are currently booming in Nigeria and cold room business is one of them. This is as a result of the fact that a lot of people living in the urban areas don’t have easy access to fresh food. More so properly cleaning and getting ready fresh food is time and energy consuming which is why cold rooms are highly patronised. This explains why cold room business is very lucrative as a kilogram of frozen chicken goes for as high as 1,000 naira and even more.

==>CLICK HERE TO CHAT US ON WHATSAPP FOR BUSINESS PLANS & GET A DISCOUNT<==

There is a saying that when one fails to plan the person has planed to fail. This also applies to cold room business. You’ll have to properly consider the business and evaluate the different factors that can affect the profit rate an example of which is the issue of electricity prevalent in the country. When you’ve arrived at the proper conclusions and plans, then implemented them rightly, be certain that you’ll have a good profit rate as an average cold room makes 200,000 naira every month.

How to run a successful cold room business

1. Have a Business Plan for your Cold room company

The first step for the success of every business is to have a business plan regardless of how small it might appear. To do this you’ll need to conduct an intensive feasibility study concerning the frozen food business. You’ll have to be aware of the fact that other people are in the business so you have to plan and ensure that you’ll attract customers and maintain them. Is not a bad idea to seek professional advice or make enquires from business plan writers / someone who has been successful in the business.

2. Raise Business Capital for the Cold room establishment

Frozen food business just like every business requires capital to start. The amount of capital needed depends on whether you want your business to be small scale or large scale. You can get the capital through savings, loans or from family and friends. The capital required is not just for start up, it also needs to include the money that will be used for running the business as well as for maintenance and repairs for at least three months before substantial profits starts coming in.

3. Decide on Your Product Line

Many options are available in this line of business as a result of the fact that many food items can be frozen such as seafood and poultry. So you have to decide exactly what you want to be selling taking into consideration the fact that some foods are popular and some not so popular in some areas. It is advisable to start with the more popular food and gradually add others to the list. If you want to be selling more than one food item then be sure to have proper storage facility to contain them. For instance it is not advisable to put seafood and poultry in the same freezer as seafood has it’s peculiar smell and not every likes that. So when the smell affects the poultry it will drive away customers who come for poultry.

4. Select Suitable Location of your Office / Business

The location of a business is crucial to the success of the business. You have to select a location that is visible and easily accessible. You have to equally consider whether frozen food is in high demand in the area you choose as high consumption of frozen food is an indication that you will have a good patronage.

5. Register the Business With The Relevant Association

It is advisable to register and identify with the association of the frozen food business in your area. This will keep in the loop about what is going on in the business. You’ll equally be aware of opportunities when they come. Sometimes the association even gives out loans and grants. However you have to properly investigate levies that are placed on you by the association to make sure that you are not cheated.

6. Build Your Customer Base

You have to determine the kind of customers that are your target. This will help you know how to stock up the Cold room. If you are targeting children then you’ll have more of red meat and poultry, if you are targeting people advanced in age then you’ll have to focus on seafood and poultry. Try as much as possible to keep your customers satisfied and happy so your business can continue to thrive.

7. Properly Plan Your Cold room Storage System

Storage facilities such as refrigerators and freezers are important for a cold room business as the food items have to be properly preserved. If your storage facilities are bad the food items will be bad and will not attract customers. Therefore make sure that your storage facilities are of high quality.

8. Get Adequate Power Supply Generator

One of the major factors to consider in the frozen food business is power supply. To ensure that the food items will not spoil you have to ensure that you have a stand by power generating set. This keeps the food items fresh and that way you will not suffer loss in your business.

Go for generating sets that can handle high voltage. Also generating sets that run on petrol are cheaper than those that run on diesel.

9. Build Your Logistics – Home Delivery

This is a strategy to get and keep customers. It saves your customers time as you take the goods to them wherever they are. However as this is an expense, it is advisable to render this service only to those who buy in bulk. You can also sell online and deliver them to customers who make purchases online. Have telephone numbers for your business so that you can be easily contacted and demands easily placed.

10. Get the necessary equipments For Frozen Food Business in Nigeria

Some of the equipments required for the cold room business include:

Knives (Big and small)

Fan/air conditioner

Water container

Wooden boards

Bowls or buckets

Waste bin, etc

You’ll also need a work space and a sales person if you can afford one.

Advantages of Frozen Food in Nigeria

Frozen foods have a lot of advantages. The flavour and nutrients of the food is preserved, it saves time as it is quicker to prepare. It is equally cheaper to purchase and clean when compared to fresh food. Food spoilage is also prevented.

Disadvantages of cold room business

Most things that have advantages also have disadvantages and frozen foods are not exempted.

There is normally a high content of salt and sodium which results in higher chances of high blood pressure and heart diseases. Frozen foods particularly vegetables can become too soft and loose their taste. More so there are high chances of the loss of some nutrients for instance Vitamins C and B in fruits and vegetables. Polyphenoic substances in some food are also reduced.

Nevertheless, frozen foods are safe for consumption and a greater amount of nutrients are preserved.

How To Start Profitable Frozen Food Business Easily In Nigeria

frozen food business in Nigeria

You’re greatly mistaken if you think the frozen food business in Nigeria is not profitable. Despite being part of the driest continent in the world, Nigeria has a high demand for frozen food. The large population of the middle class

How to Start Frozen Food Business in Nigeria

In addition to writing a good business plan and raising enough capital to start the business. Here are several things you need to know when starting a frozen food business.

1. Know Your Niche

Your niche is the key to your business livelihood. Make sure you do all of the necessary research before choosing a niche. Two general categories in frozen food are processed and non-processed products. Processed refers to the byproducts such as cheese, milk, and sausages. While non-processed are those that still retain their original form such as meat cuts, fish, and most seafood.

2. Understand the Product Line

After deciding on a niche, you still need to specify your business into several products. This will help build your credibility. You also can focus on specific products, knowing them inside out. Another thing to note is that different lines of products may require different temperatures to store.

3. Choose The Best Location

Like many other businesses, location is key. The best scenario is to have your storage and office in the same complex. You can have better control over the process and ensure your high-quality standard .

4. Complete all paperwork

Since you’ll be in the food business, you may need additional licenses after registering your business. Some of these extra licenses are health and hygiene. This is to ensure the customers that your products are safe the products are safe to consume.

5. Have enough power and storage unit

This point has a strong relationship with the location. You must have enough power and storage to prevent the ice to melt early and ruin your products. Storage units also have a specific capacity to provide maximum chill. These may sound trivial, but you may need to have some extra funds for the generator and emergency storage.

6. Build a logistic army

Logistics is key since you need to have the best method of transportation from the supplier to your storage, before delivering them to the customers. If you plan to work on the grassroots level or only have a small area to work with, you can utilize a motorcycle or small box cars as your primary transportation.

7. Have the best marketing

Marketing is the heart of any business. Therefore, you need to utilize it to gain more customers and earn their trust. When it comes to marketing frozen food, you can highlight the source location or the product itself.

Challenges in Frozen Food Business

Like many other businesses, frozen food also faces several challenges. Primarily in the health sector since the food is no longer fresh and losing most of its nutrients. Another challenge is the high cost of capital.

You also must have a secondary plan to repurpose the products that are still in your storage. This will reduce the amount of waste and you still can gain profit.

When you start a frozen food business in Nigeria , you must remember that you’re essentially providing a storage and logistic service. As the company between the supplier and consumers, ensure that you’re giving your best effort despite the challenges that come your way.

How to Start Frozen Food Business In Nigeria

Starting a frozen chicken business: dressed and packaged.

Frozen food business in Nigeria is gradually turning into a very lucrative investment. The increasing rush for frozen turkey, chicken, fish and other seafood because of the busy lifestyle of most families has created huge market for this investment.

READ:  How To Start Cold Room Business

As opposed to villages and rural areas where people have easy access to fresh food especially fish and poultry products in urban and developed centres frozen food is the what is readily available due to the need for convenience and preservation.

Before you start frozen business in Nigeria, it is important to put some factors into consideration. The business of frozen turkey and chicken is a high risk one especially when you did not prepare well. There is need for constant supply of electricity which is a powerful factor to consider, putting in mind the power supply situation across the nation.

==> Develop A  Frozen Food Business Plan

You need to write a business plan in the process of planning your business. A comprehensive feasibility study will help you start well regardless of the competition.

Meet with professionals or people that are already well established in the business to get clarifications on areas that are not clear to you. You plan must include how to start well, survive the competition and expand later on.

==> How Much Money Do You Have?

Your capital will determine the scale you will start from. If you are starting a one man business, understand that apart from the cost of starting a frozen food business, several costs are also involved in running it.

Some of the major capital projects in frozen business include:

– cost of renting/building a shop/outlet, cost of deep freezers/cold room, – cost of purchasing live or packaged poultry products – cost of generators and fuelling, – cost of weighing scales

==> What Food Products Do You Want To Start With?

There are many food items that can be sold frozen. Seafood like fish, shrimps, crayfish, lobsters as well as poultry products such as chicken and turkey appear to be in higher demand than fruits and vegetables. Even in choosing the type of fish to start with, you should consider the taste of people in your locality. If you are just starting, stick with products that have the greatest demand. Products that give off distinct odour such as fish should not be not be kept in the same freezer with others.

==> Get Your Location Right

Frozen business flourishes more in some areas than others. Whether you situate your business in Lagos, Ibadan, Ogun, Portharcourt, Enugu, Imo, Abuja, Kano or Kaduna, your success lies heavily on how much of the your products people consume and the price it command. Assess the locality where you want to set up frozen business and try to forecast what the turn out will be in a year or two.

Although you make not make much profit in the first one or two years of starting frozen business due to the initial costs involved, ensure you choose a location with great prospects.

==> Know Your Customers

It is important to know your customers’ taste and spending habits. As a new business owner assess your customers to know who they are. You will then factor this in when choosing products to stock. Younger people prefer red meat and poultry foods while older people will patronize seafood and poultry products more.

Ensure you doing everything possible to attract new customers and keep them so that your frozen food business can grow.

==> You Need A Good Storage Facility

Your storage facility is the backbone of services offered in frozen business. You cannot think of starting a frozen chicken shop without planning on how to acquire deep freezers for frozen food, cold rooms and other cooling systems. The scale you are starting from will influence the size and number of units of these equipment you will buy.

==> Get A Petrol Generator

The problem with electricity is a major challenge in frozen chicken business. Understand that you are dealing with perishable food items and make sure you have a solid plan to get constant supply of electricity. A petrol generator is preferable to a diesel one because of the cost of fueling and maintenance.

Make sure you buy durable brands and go for the one whose voltage will carry all appliances in your facility. If you can afford it, make sure you have a spare generator in case the main one breaks down and can’t be fixed on time.

==> Offer Free Delivery As Bonus

Though you may not be able to do this for all your clients due to the extra costs involved, for short distances and bulk purchases you can offer to deliver the items free of charge.  This edge over other competitors will endear your business to a lot of people, who will be interested in buying more.

Provide a functional telephone line on standby so that customers can reach you anytime for inquiry, booking and complaints about your frozen food shop .

How To Start Frozen Food Business In Nigeria: Detailed Guide

Eno Johnson

Frozen food business is very lucrative especially in Nigeria because of the growth in population. The business is far from being saturated becausr we have less people doing the business. This is due to the fact that it is seen as a dirty job, but therein lies the money. Do you know you can control the smell of the place by constantly cleaning and washing blood away; then drop some baking powder on strategic spots to control the smell in the place. Frozen food has to do with the sell of fish, turkey, prawns, chicken, gizzards etc.

This is one business that can grow quickly within the shortest possible time. Many people are living sophisticated lifestyles and will rather prefer already prepared, cleaned and cut meat than having to go through all those stress. There are some people who cannot or will not like to slaughter chicken so the best bet is for them to buy already made. Ceremonies such as birthday parties, weddings, naming ceremony, convocation, festivals etc. takes place every now and again; frozen food is used in large quantity to prepare food.

Places such as hotel, restaurant,  bar, fast food joint patronizes frozen food a lot. Another set of people who trade mainly on some of these frozen foods are chicken vendors, fried fish and chicken sellers.

Someone said he started with two and half kilos of chicken but now he is buying cartons of assorted products. You have to decide on what to sell and concentrate on that before scaling up.

One job or business may not be sustainable, you need additional profit venture. Why not try frozen food business out.

HOW TO START FROZEN FOOD BUSINESS

There are many things to put into considerations before starting your frozen food business. Some of those things are:

Get a place:  Where you establish your frozen food business is very important. It can be a rented shop or your property. The place should be accessible and open. It mustn’t necessarily be a market place although getting a shop in the market is very good because you will have many buyers. Your shop can be close to the market, in front of your house if it is highly populated or in a street where such is lacking. When you are using a hidden place or unpopulated place you may not succeed in the business.

You can source for money depending on how you want to start whether in a small scale or large scale. There are different ways to source for money, it could be  through family members, saving from other businesses, or from companies that give loans.

Generator is very important when talking about frozen food business because the product has to be in a frozen state so that it will not spoil. To save cost a generator that uses diesel is more ideal if not your profit can be consumed by fuel. Even if you have a steady power in your location you still need generator because you never can tell when you will need it and fresh food is not something to gamble with.

In case you don’t have enough money to purchase generator immediately, you can be taking your product to cold room for a fee until you are able to gather money to own one. Another way is to compliment generator with electric light. For days there are not light you can on the generator and leave it for 4 steady hours in other to preserve the products.

PURCHASE PRODUCT

Decide on what to sell or find out what moves the market in your location and purchase more of that. Frozen chicken is one of the frozen food that sells higher than others, followed by turkey, fish etc. Croaker fish is preferred to other fishes.

WHY YOU SHOULD START FROZEN FOOD BUSINESS

  • It is high in demand
  • Frozen foods are already prepared food so it saves people time especially those that want to cook food quickly. As such t is more preferred than raw ones.
  • It has a high profit.
  • You can do it as an additional business, just employ two persons to run the business for you.
  • Anybody can do frozen food business, it does not call for a certificate.

EQUIPMENTS NEEDED FOR FROZEN FOOD BUSINESS

  • Wooden board
  • Waste basket
  • Water storage

HOW MUCH IS NEEDED TO START FROZEN FOOD BUSINESS

If you are starting small #200,000 is okay. But if in a bigger way you will need up to #500,000. You have to purchase 2 deep freezers which may cost more than #100,000. Generator from #60,000 and above. Then other things will gulp about #200,000.

PROFITABILITY IN FROZEN FOOD BUSINESS

The business is very profitable. Especially when you are selling them in parts. Assuming you bought a carton of chicken #10,000 and sell it #11,000 and you sell 5 cartons in a day, that‘s #5,000 for just chicken alone. How about turkey, gizzard, snail, prawns etc. And of course you will certainly sell more than that in a day.

When everything is carefully planned and executed, you can be making not less than #100,000 every month and above and it keeps increasing with time. Somebody said he sponsored himself through school, pay house rent, feed himself and did many other things from the proceeds of frozen food business.

Make your shop attractive for people to come in, keep chairs or bench for them to sit down and wait for you to package their products. Cut the chicken or turkey neatly, avoid wasting them by shredding the product through mistake. That is why the knives and chisel should be sharped frequently. Your weighing machine should be correctly positioned; if you short change anybody you will lose customers. Use newspapers or any other papers to wrap the frozen food after putting them in a nylon especially chicken or turkey that can leak out blood.

Frozen food business will make you rich within the shortest possible time if you keep to it. You can open more shops and put people to run them for you. And because you know the amount that can come out from the business; it will be difficult for anybody to cheat you.
