To  access the PowerPoint Zoom feature : click on Insert in the  PowerPoint ribbon  >  Zoom  > then choose  Slide ,  Section , or  Summary   Zoom . Each of these PowerPoint Zoom option serves slightly different functions:

• Summary Zoom: creates a summary slide for the different slides or sections in your PowerPoint presentation for easy navigation.

The key thing to remember is that your presentation is there to compliment your speech, not be its focus.

Start with writing your speech outline, not with putting together slides

“Does this slide help support my main point?”

If the answer is no, then remove it.  Remember, less is more.

First of all, you shouldn’t have that much text on your slides. At least not before you deliver a killer presentation; providing copies of your presentation gives your audience a possible distraction where they can flip through the copy and ignore what you are saying.

It’s also easy for them to take your slides out of context without understanding the meaning behind each slide.  It’s OK to give a copy of the presentation, but generally it is better to give the copies AFTER you have delivered your speech. If you decide to share a copy of your presentation, the best way to do it is by  generating a QR code  for it and placing it at the end of your presentation. Let the audience tell you what they need to know

Sometimes you don’t know how familiar the audience is with the topic you’re presenting. Should you start at the beginning, or dive into the details? Should you speak broadly, or specifically?

The easiest way to find out is to ask. Let the audience tell you what they want to know, or what they already know, with a choose-your-own-adventure style question.

There are a few ways you can do this—try a ranking activity, for example. Make each response a different topic that could be discussed in your presentation. Then, ask the audience to rank those topics from most to least important. Not only will the results show you what the audience wants to hear about most, but you’ll incorporate a different visual element into your presentation design.

If you prefer, you can even send this question out and begin gathering responses before your presentation to help with preparation. Use a shareable response link to make it as easy as possible for people to respond.

Get better questions, minimize distractions with Q&A

Most of us at Poll Everywhere start a presentation with these instructions, “The retro is now live at this URL. Please drop in your questions there.” At any point, if someone has a question that doesn’t need to be addressed right away, they can go to that URL and type it in. These questions are then shared and discussed at the end of the presentation.

This helps you minimize interruptions and ensure you reach the end of your presentation within the allotted time. It also helps the audience by giving them a discrete way to offload questions and refocus on what you’re presenting (instead of holding onto that feedback till the end).

We use the Poll Everywhere Q&A activity as the catch-all for questions and feedback. But our project managers have created a system that uses Q&A for their entire sprint retrospective meetings.

Ask attendees to complete a survey to improve retention

Ask attendees to complete a survey before they leave your presentation. This is especially helpful for lengthy, content-rich presentations to a large audience. Putting in the effort in advance really pays off when you see the constructive feedback that comes in as a result.

At Poll Everywhere, everyone dedicates a few hours each month to customer support. The Customer Support team periodically runs workshops to bolster our CS skills, and they always cap off the event with a survey. Completing this survey is an efficient way of reviewing what was presented, and gives whoever ran the workshop a clear indication of how the material was absorbed.

Use videos to mix up the flow of your presentation

With all these quizzes and questions , you might feel like your PowerPoint is turning into a game show. If you need to give the audience (and yourself) a break, slot in a quick video. Videos are an easy way to vary the flow of your presentation without losing the audience’s attention.

Create shareable artifacts from your presentation

There are two ways to go with this idea: practical or fun. On the practical end of the spectrum, you have the summary slide. This slide, typically found at the end of a PowerPoint, sums up everything presented into a few, succinct bullet points. Export the slide as an image and email that image out to all the attendees in a follow-up email.

On the fun end of the spectrum, you have screenshots of your Poll Everywhere activities. Maybe you created a live word cloud with the audience, or asked them to submit their thoughts and feelings on a certain topic. You can export those activities as screenshots and drop them into a follow-up email as well. They make for a nice, subtle reminder of your interactive presentation .

Enable anonymity for frank or sensitive feedback

Kansas youth pastor Cam Brennan used a Poll Everywhere Q&A to facilitate questions on sex and dating from youth group students at his church. He made sure to enable anonymity for the Q&A so that student’s responses couldn’t be traced back to their source. With this added layer of privacy, students were free to speak their minds without feeling embarrassed in front of their peers.

“Going into the night I had no idea what to expect,” said Brennan. “Using Poll Everywhere was a great way to encourage our students to ask the questions they really wanted to ask, without having to raise their hand and ask it in front of everyone else. I’m convinced that had we done it ‘the old-fashioned way’ the night would have been a flop.”

Anonymity is available for all Poll Everywhere activities. You never know what common trends you’ll uncover when the audience feels comfortable sharing their thoughts.

Competitions tap into the audience’s competitive side

As mentioned, one way to engage your audience is to distribute a survey after your presentation ends but before they leave. Another fun way to recap the session is to use Poll Everywhere Competitions . This activity is a live trivia contest you create and the audience plays together, live, all within PowerPoint.

Base each question on something you presented. A leaderboard between questions will keep track of who retained the most information. Extra points are awarded for the fastest responses.

One major upside to using a live competition — as opposed to an asynchronous survey — is you can speak to the results in the moment. See a lot of people miss one question? Pause and take a moment to speak to that point some more before continuing the competition. At the end, a shower of confetti accompanies the final leaderboard revealing the winner of your competition. It makes for memorable presentations, to the say the least.

Bake interactivity into your presentation ahead of time

Sometimes, even when you give people every opportunity to speak up and interact, they just won’t take the bait. Help them open up by seeding bits of interactivity into your presentation ahead of time. It’s worth the effort when you consider all the benefits of using live polls during your talk.

For example, if you know your presentation is going to include a Q&A session at some point, ask a trusted colleague to ask a specific question at that time. That way, when the Q&A starts, you know at least one person is asking something – and that’s usually all it takes to open the flood gates and get other people talking as well.

On the flip side, if you’re using a Poll Everywhere Q&A, and people are responding on their personal devices, you can still seed questions and comments ahead of time. Just drop them in after you create the Q&A. When the audience loads it up, they will see your submissions, which should give them a better idea of what to write themselves.

How to Make an Interactive PowerPoint

Creating an interactive PowerPoint presentation is all about planning the structure and the flow of your content. Once you have that sorted, follow these steps to add the interactive elements into your PPT.

Step 1: Use a Great Template

Finding a great PowerPoint template that comes with beautiful slides is an important step in this process. It will help you save a lot of time that goes into designing each slide and adding components one by one.

So make sure to download a great template and customize the design to fit your brand and the topic you’re discussing.

Step 2: Add Hyperlinks

The next step is to add hyperlinks to your interactive elements. For example, you can add a button to your slides to let users quickly go back to the main menu or the beginning of the slideshow.

You can do this by adding a hyperlink to an existing element on the slide. Or you can create a simple shape and adding a link to it.

To add the hyperlink to the selected object, go to the Insert Menu and select Action .

From here, you can select Slide.. from the Hyperlink To menu and pick any slide in your presentation to link to it.

Now, when a user clicks on the object, it will send them to the linked slide.

Additionally, you can also add animations to the object. If you’re using a PowerPoint template that comes with animations, you won’t have to manually add the animations.

This should meet all your presentation requirements if you are just getting started. Their graphic design tool has been designed for anyone to use, using simple drag-and-drop processes. If you’re ready to move up to the next level, their paid-for plans have very reasonable pricing and provide even more great features such as royalty free images, gifs, animations, video and audio.

What could you include that your audience can interact with – either in real time or if they are viewing a recorded presentation?

7 Interactive Poll Ideas for Your Next PowerPoint Presentation

With polls , you can collect non-verbal responses from your audience in real time. This is priceless – especially when you’re presenting online.

Not only will you learn what your meeting participants think but you can also collect insights and ideas from them and trigger a meaningful discussion.

Here are 7 tips for using live polls during your PowerPoint presentation to make it more interactive , productive , and engaging for your audience.

Add live polls directly to your PowerPoint presentation.

1. set the mood with an interactive icebreaker.

Open your meeting with a poll question – try one of these icebreakers – so you can involve your team in a conversation right from the beginning. You’ll let them know that their input matters and that you expect to hear their thoughts and opinions throughout the meeting.

For example, you can check in to see how everyone is feeling with a poll such as:

• 1-7, how motivated are you feeling after our last all-hands meeting? (Rating)
• In one word, how was last month for you? (Word cloud)

Or, you can spend the first minutes of the meeting sharing highlights from last week/month and celebrating the people that made them happen with a poll like one of these:

• What was your highlight of the last week/month? (Open text)
• If you could thank one person from the team, who would it be? (Word cloud)

2. Get buy-in from your team

It’s important to know whether your team understands the bigger picture – be it your company strategy, your team goals, or the project plan for the next quarter. Only then can you reach alignment and make sure you’re all rowing in the same direction.

Live polls provide a safe space for your team members to share how they feel. Your colleagues can be 100% honest because their responses in polls are anonymous . This helps you uncover any hidden issues.

After you have presented the strategy to your team, ask them a poll question such as:

• On a scale of 1-6, how clear is our strategy for you? (Rating)
• Is there anything unclear about our goals that you’d like to discuss? (Open text)

3. Involve everyone in the decision-making

Making a decision online through a video conference can be quite painful. Some people interrupt, and speak over their teammates, while others are reluctant to speak up and express their opinion.

If you already have the options that are to be considered by the team but can’t agree on which direction to take, here’s a solution for collaborative decision-making : Let people vote on their preferred option.

It’s quick, efficient, and most importantly, politically neutral. Each person’s vote is anonymous and has the same impact – regardless of their role, or their previous influence over decisions.

4. Brainstorm priorities together

Similarly to the previous point, you can use polls to brainstorm the options together – for example, priorities for the next quarter – and then let people vote on the ones they find most impactful.

During the meeting, give your teammates a couple of minutes to think about what projects or activities would help your team achieve its goals and ask them to submit them into a Slido open text poll.

Once the ideas come in, review them, and discuss them together with your team.

5. Collect your team’s insights for a discussion

Planning a new project? Discuss how your project is moving forward to make sure you’re all on the same page. Live polls will help you here as well. Ask your team a poll question such as:

• How confident are you that we will meet the project deadline? (Rating)
• Are there any roadblocks that hinder the progress of the project? (Open text)
• What should we continue doing to move this project forward? (Open text)

These types of poll questions work as springboards for you to start a discussion. Once your teammates have submitted their answers, review them together, and encourage people to share their thoughts or follow up on what others have posted.

6. Address your team’s questions and concerns

At the end of your presentation, be sure to leave time for your team’s questions. Especially after important strategy meetings or planning meetings that may give rise to many questions and concerns.

With Slido’s integration with PowerPoint , you can add an interactive Q&A slide to the end of your presentation so your teammates can post their questions into Slido.

You can also enable your team to ask anonymously for greater transparency. They can also upvote (or downvote) questions posted by other colleagues, which helps you identify the most burning questions and answer them with priority.

7. Gamify your meeting with a quiz

A short interactive quiz will upgrade your PowerPoint presentation and make it more engaging.

When it comes to PowerPoint presentation design, there's no shortage of avenues you can take.

While all that choice — colors, formats, visuals, fonts — can feel liberating, it‘s important that you’re careful in your selection as not all design combinations add up to success.

In this blog post, I’m sharing some of my favorite PowerPoint tips and templates to help you nail your next presentation.

What makes a good PowerPoint presentation?

In my opinion, a great PowerPoint presentation gets the point across succinctly while using a design that doesn't detract from it.

Here are some of the elements I like to keep in mind when I’m building my own.

1. Minimal Animations and Transitions

Believe it or not, animations and transitions can take away from your PowerPoint presentation. Why? Well, they distract from the content you worked so hard on.

A good PowerPoint presentation keeps the focus on your argument by keeping animations and transitions to a minimum. I suggest using them tastefully and sparingly to emphasize a point or bring attention to a certain part of an image.

2. Cohesive Color Palette

I like to refresh my memory on color theory when creating a new PowerPoint presentation.

A cohesive color palette uses complementary and analogous colors to draw the audience’s attention and help emphasize certain aspects at the right time.

It‘s impossible for me to tell you the specific design ideas you should go after in your next PowerPoint, because, well, I don’t know what the goal of your presentation is.

Luckily, new versions of PowerPoint actually suggest ideas for you based on the content you're presenting. This can help you keep up with the latest trends in presentation design .

PowerPoint is filled with interesting boilerplate designs you can start with. To find these suggestions, open PowerPoint and click the “Design” tab in your top navigation bar. Then, on the far right side, you'll see the following choices:

This simplistic presentation example employs several different colors and font weights, but instead of coming off as disconnected, the varied colors work with one another to create contrast and call out specific concepts.

What I like: The big, bold numbers help set the reader's expectations, as they clearly signify how far along the viewer is in the list of tips.

10. “Pixar's 22 Rules to Phenomenal Storytelling,” Gavin McMahon

This presentation by Gavin McMahon features color in all the right places. While each of the background images boasts a bright, spotlight-like design, all the characters are intentionally blacked out.

What I like: This helps keep the focus on the tips, while still incorporating visuals. Not to mention, it's still easy for me to identify each character without the details. (I found you on slide eight, Nemo.)

11. “Facebook Engagement and Activity Report,” We Are Social

Here's another great example of data visualization in the wild.

What I like: Rather than displaying numbers and statistics straight up, this presentation calls upon interesting, colorful graphs, and charts to present the information in a way that just makes sense.

12. “The GaryVee Content Model,” Gary Vaynerchuk

This wouldn‘t be a true Gary Vaynerchuk presentation if it wasn’t a little loud, am I right?

What I like: Aside from the fact that I love the eye-catching, bright yellow background, Vaynerchuk does a great job of incorporating screenshots on each slide to create a visual tutorial that coincides with the tips. He also does a great job including a visual table of contents that shows your progress as you go .

13. “20 Tweetable Quotes to Inspire Marketing & Design Creative Genius,” IMPACT Branding & Design

We‘ve all seen our fair share of quote-chronicling presentations but that isn’t to say they were all done well. Often the background images are poor quality, the text is too small, or there isn't enough contrast.

Well, this professional presentation from IMPACT Branding & Design suffers from none of said challenges.

What I like: The colorful filters over each background image create just enough contrast for the quotes to stand out.

14. “The Great State of Design,” Stacy Kvernmo

This presentation offers up a lot of information in a way that doesn't feel overwhelming.

What I like: The contrasting colors create visual interest and “pop,” and the comic images (slides 6 through 12) are used to make the information seem less buttoned-up and overwhelming.

15. “Clickbait: A Guide To Writing Un-Ignorable Headlines,” Ethos3

Not going to lie, it was the title that convinced me to click through to this presentation but the awesome design kept me there once I arrived.

What I like: This simple design adheres to a consistent color pattern and leverages bullet points and varied fonts to break up the text nicely.

16. “Digital Transformation in 50 Soundbites,” Julie Dodd

This design highlights a great alternative to the “text-over-image” display we've grown used to seeing.

What I like: By leveraging a split-screen approach to each presentation slide, Julie Dodd was able to serve up a clean, legible quote without sacrificing the power of a strong visual.

17. “Fix Your Really Bad PowerPoint,” Slide Comet

When you‘re creating a PowerPoint about how everyone’s PowerPoints stink, yours had better be terrific. The one above, based on the ebook by Seth Godin, keeps it simple without boring its audience.
