Harvesting is the process of collecting crops. Farm hands often perform this task, so it’s important to know how to harvest various types of produce. You can learn harvesting techniques through on-the-job training or by taking a class at a community college. When performing this skill, you should be able to identify which plants are ready for harvesting and have an understanding of proper harvesting methods.

Farm hands often perform post-harvest handling, which involves the processes that occur after crops are harvested. This includes activities like cleaning and sorting produce, preparing it for shipment or storage and maintaining records of production. Farm hands also use this skill when performing tasks such as harvesting vegetables, fruits and grains by hand.

Attention to detail is a skill that can help you perform your job well. Farm hands often have many tasks throughout the day, and being able to complete each task with precision can help ensure the farm’s productivity. For example, if you’re working in an animal barn, paying attention to detail can mean knowing which animals need food or water at any given time.

Pest control is a necessary skill for farm hands to have, as it involves the removal of unwanted insects and pests from crops. This can include identifying which pests are present in the fields and how they should be treated. Farm hands with pest control skills may also help farmers develop strategies to prevent pests from damaging their crops.

Knowing how to operate tractors can help farm hands perform their duties more efficiently and safely. It’s also important that they know how to use the tractor correctly so they don’t damage crops or equipment.

Punctuality is the ability to be on time for appointments or meetings. They may also need to rotate livestock pastures or apply compost to maintain a healthy environment for their animals.

Flexibility is the ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Farm work often involves working outdoors in all types of weather, so flexibility can help you adjust your schedule and tasks as needed. For example, if a rainstorm delays planting, you may need to change your plans for the day. Being flexible can also allow you to take on new challenges or responsibilities when they arise.

Animal husbandry is the practice of caring for animals. This includes feeding, cleaning and providing medical attention when necessary. Farm hands often work with livestock, so animal husbandry skills are important to have as a farm hand. You can learn these skills through classes or on-the-job training.

Farm hands should know how to maintain and repair equipment. This can include tractors, harvesters, irrigation systems and other machinery used on farms. You may also be responsible for maintaining the farm’s vehicles, including trucks or cars that transport crops to market. Farm hands often work long hours and perform physically demanding tasks. They need to be able to work hard for extended periods of time, sometimes outdoors in extreme weather conditions. Farm workers also need physical strength to lift heavy objects or pull large farm equipment.

Herbicides are chemicals used to kill weeds. Farm hands may need to apply herbicides to crops, soil and other areas of a farm. Knowing how to use herbicides correctly can help ensure the health of plants and prevent damage to nearby wildlife. It’s important for farm hands to understand the proper safety precautions when handling herbicides.

Soil analysis is the process of testing soil to determine its quality. Farm hands often perform this task by taking samples from different areas on a farm and sending them to a laboratory for evaluation. This skill can help you assess the health of crops, which may lead to more productive harvests. It also helps you identify any issues with the soil that need to be addressed before planting.

Irrigation is the process of supplying water to crops. Farm hands often need to know how to operate irrigation equipment and understand when it’s necessary to irrigate a field. This skill can help you save time, money and resources for farmers by ensuring their crops receive enough water. You may also be responsible for maintaining an irrigation system, which requires knowledge of its inner workings.

How Cincinnati Reds plan to keep Noelvi Marte game-ready for return from PED suspension

S EATTLE — This week was supposed to provide an organizational homecoming for this year’s Cincinnati Reds’ Rookie of the Year candidate.

Until Noelvi Marte got suspended 80 games for steroids during spring training.

But Reds manager David Bell said the infielder acquired from the Mariners as a prospect in the Luis Castillo trade at the trade deadline two years ago is still close to the Reds’ thoughts and plans.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

“I’ve checked in on him a couple times,” said Bell, who also gets reports from farm director Jeremy Farrell, whose in Arizona, where Marte is playing during extended spring training.

“He said he’s doing great, getting all his work in,” Bell said, “making the most of it.”

Marte, who hit .316 with three homers in a 35-game debut for the Reds last summer, isn’t eligible to return to the Reds until June 27 at St. Louis, and he won’t be eligible for the postseason if the club makes the playoffs.

The Reds presumptive Opening Day third baseman until the suspension is eligible for a minor-league rehab assignment leading up to a return.

But between the end of extended spring training games early next month and that minor-league eligibility, Marte won’t have any games to play.

Bell said the club has devised a schedule of live batting practices and simulated games to try to best prepare him to be ready as soon as he’s eligible.

Offer to donate land to Montgomery Co. sparks optimism that White’s Ferry service connecting Md. and Va. will resume

There are newfound hopes that ferry service that once carried up to 800 cars a day across the Potomac River between Montgomery County in Maryland and Loudoun County in Virginia could resume.

The current owners of White’s Ferry, Chuck and Stacy Kuhn, made a formal offer to donate the ferry landing property to Montgomery County, with the hopes of resuming ferry service between Poolesville, Maryland, and Leesburg, Virginia.

The Kuhns bought White’s Ferry in 2021, after the previous owner ended operations in 2020. The closure was the result of a dispute with the owner of the ferry landing on the Virginia side of the Potomac River.

In an interview with WTOP, Chuck Kuhn, who is also the founder of JK Moving Services, said he was unable to resolve differences with the owners of Rockland Farm, which includes the Virginia ferry landing.

In making the donation to the county, Kuhn said, “That way, the ferry operation is owned by a governmental entity. And then if they are unsuccessful in working with Rockland Farm, like we had been, they could approach VDOT to use eminent domain to gain access to the Virginia shoreline and get the ferry open again.”

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and County Council President Andrew Friedson have welcomed the offer from the Kuhns.

Elrich wrote in a statement that representatives from the Montgomery County Department of Transportation met with representatives for the Kuhns on Tuesday morning “to begin discussing the nature and timing of the donation.”

Elrich said he’s looking forward to a positive resolution as quickly as possible.

Since the Kuhns purchased White’s Ferry, there had been negotiations with the owners of Rockland Farm, but those talks stalled.

Rockland Farm owner Libby Devlin told WTOP she’s very pleased with the donation.

“I look forward to working with Montgomery and Loudoun counties to get the ferry open as quickly as possible,” Devlin said.

Devlin had been unable to reach an agreement with the Kuhns over a deal to provide access to the Virginia landing in negotiations that went on over a period of three years. When asked what change would allow for a rapid resumption of the ferry operations, Devlin offered few details.

“We were always looking for an inflation-adjusted 50 cents per car,” she said, adding that it was very reasonable.

She, along with Friedson, is hoping the shift in ownership would lead to the ferry opening quickly.

“Our regional transportation network doesn’t need to be held hostage based on a dispute between private property owners,” Friedson said.

Friedson said the donation is the start of an ongoing process.

“This doesn’t resolve all of the issues,” Friedson said.

By Marc Heller | 04/17/2024 06:21 AM EDT

House Agriculture Chair Glenn Thompson and other lawmakers signaled that a solution to a spat over climate-focused money could be at hand.

House Agriculture Chair Glenn Thompson said Tuesday he’ll release a farm bill draft within a month and have it ready for the panel’s consideration before Memorial Day.

The announcement comes as other top lawmakers signaled they are closing in on a solution to one of the most contentious parts of the legislation — what to do about climate-focused Inflation Reduction Act spending.

By setting a target date before the May 27 holiday, Thompson (R-Pa.) set the stage for the five-year bill’s first significant move forward. He told agriculture reporters he’s incorporated ideas from committee Democrats and believes the measure will be able to attract votes from the other side of the aisle.

“Without a doubt, we will mark up a farm bill before Memorial Day,” Thompson told members of the North American Agricultural Journalists. The 2018 farm bill expired last Sept. 30, and Congress has extended it for one year.

On Monday, April 15, Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers proclaimed May 7 to be Ruby Tuesday. He read the proclamation at a news conference that featured students from the School of Rock getting their ya-ya’s out on a cover of “Sympathy for the Devil.”

The mayor then boarded a cherry picker and was lifted up to uncover the Satisfaction Way sign.

Unlike any other street sign in the city, this one has the "Hackney Diamonds" update of the Stones' iconic tongue-and-lips logo.

Why Glendale is renaming a street for the Rolling Stones

If you're wondering why they're making all this fuss around a concert by the Rolling Stones in 2024, there are several reasons.

“This is the first act ever to bring three separate stadium tours to State Farm Stadium and Glendale,” City Manager Kevin Phelps says.

Plus, as city spokeswoman Sue Breding notes, they are "the world's great rock 'n' roll band."

Phelps himself is a bit of a Stones fan, having seen one of their earliest stadium shows in 1981 at the Kingdome in Seattle.

“When you think about how long ago 1981 was, I think it’s remarkable just the longevity and the fact that they’ve been able to span multiple generations of the same family who follow the music,” Phelps says. “I think it’s really unique.”

Mayor Weiers was thrilled to be involved in honoring the Rolling Stones.

"I grew up with the Stones," he says.

"I don’t think there’s too many people alive who don’t know who the Rolling Stones are. And whether you love them or not, you can’t argue the fact that they are one of the most — if not the most — popular rock ‘n’ roll bands ever. They cut across a lot of different groups of people. And how do you not like a guy who’s still performing more than 60 years later. It’s pretty incredible."

The Stones last played the stadium in 2019, a sold-out date on their No Filter Tour.

State Farm Stadium general manager Andy Gorchov says, "We are thrilled to be hosting The Rolling Stones for a third time. This marks another exciting addition to our lineup of prestigious events, reaffirming our commitment to delivering unforgettable experiences to fans.”

The Rolling Stones agreed to Glendale using their iconic logo

The Rolling Stones were very agreeable to allowing the city to use their logo on the sign for Satisfaction Way, which stretches from Camelback Road to Glendale Avenue.

“When I first got to Glendale, we typically would try to reach out to artists coming in and we would have to do a lot of arm-twisting just to get them involved in any kind of additional promotion or opportunity,” Phelps says.

That’s before the Swift City campaign the city rolled out in honor of Taylor Swift launching The Eras Tour with two performances at State Farm Stadium in 2023, for which the city won a national marketing award.

Ruby Tuesday will be celebrated all along Satisfaction Way. You've got the concert to the south, of course. But on the north end, merchants in the Westgate Entertainment District will have special Ruby Tuesday offerings, ranging from Pour Some Brown Sugar on Me Wings at Shane’s Rib Shack to Paint it Black punch at Johnny’s Chicken & Waffles.

Phelps says the city has been very “entrepreneurial” in how it tries to leverage these opportunities.

“I think it’s important to understand why we’re doing this,” Phelps says. “The main reason is that there’s been this shift from just being a concert to now being an event. And that event is now going longer. People are staying in hotel rooms overnight.

"So part of what we’re doing, having fun with promoting the artist coming to Glendale, is just to remind them this is special, take some time off of work, come in and don’t just spend a few hours but maybe spend a few days here in Glendale.”

Glendale has done similar campaigns for Guns N' Roses, Taylor Swift

The first campaign Phelps recalls doing was for a Guns N’ Roses concert in 2016 . Glendale renamed itself Paradise City for that one.

At the time, he recalls, “it was hard to get the band and the manager engaged in that campaign.”

How does the city go about deciding when a concert rises to the level that suggests this type of campaign?

“We’re looking for that unique component to it,” Phelps says. “State Farm Stadium has been very successful the past couple years at bringing a whole host of artists that have filled up the stadium.”

'You don't want to hand out a thousand keys to the city'

There needs to be an angle, whether it’s a tour launch or the Stones becoming the first band to bring three separate tours to State Farm Stadium.

“You can go to the well too often,” Phelps says. “You don’t want to hand out a thousand keys to the city.

"But I would say this: We probably won’t force-feed what we can do as a city to help promote an event. It’s going to take a partnership with us and the artist and their management.”

The Stones were willing to lean into it and get creative, including allowing the use of their iconic lips logo.

“That really showed us that they were willing to assist us and it wasn’t just, ‘What can you do for us?’" Phelps said.

"It was, ‘How can we help you really have some fun with this?’ I think in the future, we’ll need to have that kind of partner. And then as long as we continue to show success with these types of campaigns, I think it’ll be easier to get the artist engaged.”

How Satisfaction Way is helping Glendale build its brand

To Phelps, this represents a long-term vision for the future of the city.

“This is helping the city of Glendale to build its brand around the Entertainment District,” Phelps says. “We’re putting this effort in to help our merchants and our hotels in the area really leverage what we’re doing. I’m just fortunate to have a really creative team in our media department that really thinks out of the box on this stuff.”

The Rolling Stones' Hackney Diamonds Tour comes to Glendale on Tuesday, May 7. Doors open at 6 p.m. Music starts at 8.
