Introduction

In the simplest terms, an essay is a short piece of writing which is set around a specific topic or subject. The piece of writing will give information surrounding the topic but will also display the opinions and thoughts of the author. Oftentimes, an essay is used in an academic sense by way of examination to determine whether a student has understood their studies and as a way of testing their knowledge on a specific subject. An essay is also used in education as a way of encouraging a student to develop their writing skills.

Moreover; an essay is a focused piece of writing designed to inform or persuade. There are many different types of essays, but they are often defined in four categories: argumentative, expository, narrative, and descriptive essays. Argumentative and expository essays are focused on conveying information and making clear points, while narrative and descriptive essays are about exercising creativity and writing in an interesting way. At the university level, argumentative essays are the most common type.

Types of Essay Writing

When it comes to writing an essay, there is not simply one type, there are, quite a few types of essay, and each of them has its purpose and function which are as follows:

Narrative Essays

A narrative essay details a story, oftentimes from a particular point of view. When writing a narrative essay, you should include a set of characters, a location, a good plot, and a climax to the story. It is vital that when writing this type of essay you use fine details which will allow the reader to feel the emotion and use their senses but also give the story the chance to make a point.

Descriptive Essay

A descriptive essay will describe something in great detail. The subject can be anything from people and places to objects and events but the main point is to go into depth. You might describe the item’s color, where it came from, what it looks like, smells like, tastes like, or how it feels. It is very important to allow the reader to sense what you are writing about and allow them to feel some sort of emotion whilst reading. That being said, the information should be concise and easy to understand, the use of imagery is widely used in this style of essay.

Expository Essay

An expository essay is used as a way to look into a problem and therefore compare it and explore it. For the expository essay, there is a little bit of storytelling involved but this type of essay goes beyond that. The main idea is that it should explain an idea giving information and explanation. Your expository essay should be simple and easy to understand as well as give a variety of viewpoints on the subject that is being discussed. Often this type of essay is used as a way to detail a subject which is usually more difficult for people to understand, clearly and concisely.

Argumentative Essay

When writing an argumentative essay, you will be attempting to convince your reader about an opinion or point of view. The idea is to show the reader whether the topic is true or false along with giving your own opinion. You must use facts and data to back up any claims made within the essay.

Format of Essay Writing

Now there is no rigid format of an essay. It is a creative process so it should not be confined within boundaries. However, there is a basic structure that is generally followed while writing essays.

This is the first paragraph of your essay. This is where the writer introduces his topic for the very first time. You can give a very brief synopsis of your essay in the introductory paragraph. Generally, it is not very long, about 4-6 lines.

This is the main crux of your essays. The body is the meat of your essay sandwiched between the introduction and the conclusion. So the most vital content of the essay will be here. This need not be confined to one paragraph. It can extend to two or more paragraphs according to the content.

This is the last paragraph of the essay. Sometimes a conclusion will just mirror the introductory paragraph but make sure the words and syntax are different. A conclusion is also a great place, to sum up, a story or an argument. You can round up your essay by providing some morals or wrapping up a story. Make sure you complete your essays with the conclusion, leave no hanging threads.

Writing Tips

Give your essays an interesting and appropriate title. It will help draw the attention of the reader and pique their curiosity

Keep it between 300-500 words. This is the ideal length, you can take creative license to increase or decrease it

Keep your language simple and crisp. Unnecessary complicated and difficult words break the flow of the sentence.

Do not make grammar mistakes, use correct punctuation and spelling five-paragraph. If this is not done it will distract the reader from the content

Before beginning the essay, organize your thoughts and plot a rough draft. This way you can ensure the story will flow and not be an unorganized mess.

Understand the Topic Thoroughly-Sometimes we jump to a conclusion just by reading the topic once and later we realize that the topic was different than what we wrote about.  Read the topic as many times as it takes for you to align your opinion and understanding about the topic.

Make Pointers-It is a daunting task to write an essay inflow as sometimes we tend to lose our way of explaining and get off-topic, missing important details. Thinking about all points you want to discuss and then writing them down somewhere helps in covering everything you hoped to convey in your essay.

Develop a Plan and Do The Math-Essays have word limits and you have to plan your content in such a way that it is accurate, well-described, and meets the word limit given. Keep a track of your words while writing so that you always have an idea of how much to write more or less.

Essays are the most important means of learning the structure of writing and presenting them to the reader.

FAQs on Essay Writing

1. Writing an Essay in a format is important?

Yes, it is important because it makes your content more streamlined and understandable by the reader. A set format gives a reader a clear picture of what you are trying to explain. It also organises your own thoughts while composing an essay as we tend to think and write in a haphazard manner. The format gives a structure to the writeup.

2. How does Essay writing improve our English?

Essay writing is a very important part of your English earning curriculum, as you understand how to describe anything in your words or how to put your point of view without losing its meaning

3.  How do you write a good essay?

Start by writing a thorough plan. Ensure your essay has a clear structure and overall argument. Try to back up each point you make with a quotation. Answer the question in your introduction and conclusion but remember to be creative too.

4.  What is the format of writing an essay?

A basic essay consists of three main parts: introduction, body, and conclusion. This basic essay format will help you to write and organize an essay. However, flexibility is important. While keeping this basic essay format in mind, let the topic and specific assignment guide the writing and organization.

5.  How many paragraphs does an essay have?

The basic format for an essay is known as the five paragraph essay – but an essay may have as many paragraphs as needed. A five-paragraph essay contains five paragraphs. However, the essay itself consists of three sections: an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. Below we'll explore the basics of writing an essay.

6.  Can you use the word you in an essay?

In academic or college writing, most formal essays and research reports use third-person pronouns and do not use “I” or “you.” An essay is the writer's analysis of a topic.  “You” has no place in an essay since the essay is the writer's thoughts and not the reader's thoughts.

7.  What does bridge mean in an essay?

A bridge sentence is a special kind of topic sentence. In addition to signaling what the new paragraph is about, it shows how that follows from what the old paragraph said. The key to constructing good bridges is briefly pointing back to what you just finished saying.

We will be soon updating more Essays.

Characteristics of a Good Essay

A composition on a particular topic consisting of more than one paragraph is an essay. The characteristics of a good essay are:

1) Unity: The essay should deal with the main subject and all parts of it should be clearly linked with that subject.

2) Coherence: There should be a logical sequence of thought. This requires a logical relationship between ideas, sentences and paragraphs.

3) Relevance: Unimportant information should not be included.

4) Proportion: Give more space to important ideas.

Students can also get the essays for class 2 and class 3 to improve their writing skills.

Types of Essays

Essays are mainly ways of expressing one’s ideas and thoughts. Essays vary in how one narrates a personal experience, describes an issue, or convinces the reader to accept a certain viewpoint. So, essays are mainly classified into four major types, as mentioned below:

1) Narrative Essays: Telling a Story

While writing a narrative essay, students must consider the topic as if telling a story. Through these essays, they can express themselves in a creative way. These essays are usually written in the first person, so as to engage the readers.

2) Descriptive Essays: Painting a Picture with Words

In a descriptive essay, students have to paint a picture with words. They have to describe something. It can be an object, person, place, experience, emotion, situation or anything else. These essays allow students a great deal of artistic freedom.

3) Expository Essays: Presentation of the Facts

An expository essay is an informative piece of writing that presents a balanced analysis of a topic. To write a good expository essay, students need to investigate the topic, evaluate evidence, express the idea, and set forth an argument clearly and concisely. It can be done by comparison and contrast, definition, example, the analysis of cause and effect, etc.

4) Persuasive Essays: Convince Me

A persuasive essay is one in which a writer tries to convince the reader to accept his/her viewpoint. It presents all sides of the argument but clearly communicates the writer’s personal opinion.

Frequently Asked Questions on Essay writing Essay

How should students practise essay writing.

The following points should be remembered while practising essay writing: 1. Constant written practice is required for honing essay writing skills. Writing alone tests the competency of the students to ideate and execute a proper essay within a specified time. 2. In-depth knowledge on various topics is a prerequisite for students preparing to write essays in school exams and competitive examinations. Such knowledge can be acquired by regularly developing a habit of reading extensively — especially newspapers and magazines — and following other news sources on various media available to them. 3. Developing a good vocabulary is another important factor students should focus on. Essay writing demands a more formal and extensive vocabulary as the range of topics asked are so wide-ranging. Every topic will demand familiarity with words and phrases pertaining to it. Use of good idiomatic English rich with apt vocabulary will help students pen memorable essays.

How to write an essay on an unknown or unfamiliar topic?

If an essay topic is unfamiliar then students can try to write in general about topics which are related to the main topic. Reading magazines and books can help in acquisition of knowledge in various subject matters.

How to score high marks in essay writing?

Given below are some of the points to be considered to ensure that students can score high marks in essay writing. 1. Maintain flow of text in essay: Ensure that the essay follows a natural progression from introduction to conclusion. Make sure that each paragraph is thematically or logically connected to successive paragraphs. Only then will the essay be evocative and easy to read and comprehend. 2. Phrase the essay is a relatable way: Keep the target audience in mind while drafting the essay and use images and language that resonate with them. Otherwise it would fail to connect with the reader, even if you have come up with a decent essay. 3. Be creative: Show the audacity to think out of the box and to deviate from traditional ways of writing essays while coming up with ideas to present your viewpoints in the essay. Readers will be immediately drawn to a piece of writing that gives them a fresh perspective, even if you are writing on a very common topic. But too much creativity and idiosyncratic writing will only mar an otherwise well-researched essay. 4. Present the essay in a better manner: Always think of new ways and strategies to present your ideas which you may have drawn from multiple sources. Doing background research is definitely essential. But that does not mean that you have to present the content you found in the same way. A fresh approach can turn a boring essay into a very engaging one. 5. Do not be over confident: Essays usually require students to state personal opinions as well as facts. Be prudent in voicing your opinions as well as in stating facts – make sure you don’t hurt the sentiments of readers when writing on sensitive and controversial topics. Practice diligence, not overconfidence, while writing essays as a best practice.

A paragraph is a unit of writing in a larger body of work. A paragraph expresses a particular topic or theme.

Writing a paragraph on any subject involves more than just expressing your opinions; it also involves organising your thoughts so that readers can easily follow along. In English paragraph writing, it is essential to focus on the writing style, i.e., the flow and connection between the sentences.   Top

Paragraph Writing has a certain structure that aids in delivering a message that is concise and well-organized. The three main components of paragraph are-

  • Title /Topic sentence- This establishes the tone and introduces the paragraph’s primary theme. It need to be succinct, engrossing, and pertinent to the main idea
  • Supporting facts- Supporting details paint a picture in the reader’s mind, which offer a fuller explanation by employing sensory details, figurative language, and vivid imagery.
  • Conclusion- The last line summarises the essential ideas and leaves the reader with a lasting impression.

Try to adhere to the word limit i.e 150 words.   Top

Class 9 English Communicative paragraph writing question details

The CBSE has mentioned a few details in the class 9 English syllabus. Let us check out these important details of paragraph writing-

  • Word limit as prescribed 150 words has to be followed strictly in order to make your writing ideal in every sense and to avoid deduction of marks.
  • The question of paragraph writing carries a weightage of 8 marks so it is a very crucial question. Paragraph writing is a scoring topic if students avoid any grammatical errors.

To write an effective descriptive paragraph, Class 9 students should follow these guidelines:

  • Beginning with the topic stated, the paragraph should go sequentially and logically to the conclusion. Towards the end of your writing, summarize your opinion about the topic.
  • Every sentence in a paragraph must be directly related to the main theme of the paragraph, which must be one topic or concept per paragraph.
  • There should be a logical progression of ideas or a development of the topic. It is necessary to recount events in the order in which they occurred.
  • In order to avoid monotony, the paragraph should not always be of the same sentence construction.
  • Revise and edit the paragraph for clarity, coherence, and grammatical correctness.
  • Avoid spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, exceeding the word limit. This can prevent mark deduction.

  Top

It is essential to know the types of paragraph writing before you write about any given topic. Therefore, check the below information to understand the various types of paragraph writing.

Majorly, there are four types of paragraph writing, i.e., narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive. Let us see a brief explanation of what each type means-

Descriptive: This kind of writing basically describes the topic and appeals to the five senses.

Narrative: These kinds of writing are basically a narration of a story or a situation that includes a sequence.

Expository: These kinds of writing are a definition of something. These paragraphs require a lot of research.

Persuasive: These kinds of writing aim to make the audience admit a writer’s point of view. These are mostly used by the teachers to provide a strong argument.   Top

To better understand how to write descriptive paragraphs, let’s study a few examples:

Air Pollution

Air pollution is the act of mixing pollutants into air which is not ideal because it decreases the quality of life of human-beings and affects the overall planet’s habitat. Air pollution occurs when dangerous particles, gases, and chemicals are released into the air. The pollutants of air can be found in vehicle exhausts, fumes from factories and power plants, and construction sites. Respiratory problems, skin diseases, irritation of the eyes are some of the major health issues caused by air pollution. To combat this, many governments have created and enforced policies to reduce air pollution, such as shutting down coal power plants or requiring car owners to switch over to electric cars. Air purifiers are being installed at points of high vehicular movement. Rain seeding is another step to clean up the air. We should also plant more trees and care for them as trees filter pollutants and absorb carbon dioxide. Air Pollution is a challenge that humankind needs to overcome to see a better tomorrow. (166 words)

Example 2: Importance of Trees

Trees are very important, valuable and necessary to our existence as they have furnished us with two important life essentials; food and oxygen. Trees intake Carbon dioxide from air and breathe out fresh oxygen. Carbon dioxide breathed in by the trees is one of the greenhouse gases. So planting more trees will clean the air and reduce the ill – effects of global warming. Trees provide food to man and all herbivorous animals. Animals, insects, birds, and fungi make their home in the trees and make a diverse ecosystem. Trees also help in binding the soil. When trees are cut off, the most fertile top soil layer gets washed away easily in rains or floods. Trees provide us with medicinal herbs, timber, shelter too. Hence, We should encourage planting more and more trees. It is for our own betterment and the sooner we understand this, the better it is for us. (150 words)

Also, when you get the knowledge of various things like science, medicine, politics, and more, you can work for the betterment of the world. Knowledge is like a bottomless ocean. The more you dive deep into it, the deeper it will appear to you and the good news is it never gets depleted. All in all, knowledge allows nations and its people to flourish. Sunrise is one of the most beautiful scenes of nature. Sunrise marks the beginning of a fresh day. Hence, one should get up early in the morning to enjoy the sight of sunrise. Sunrise has a curative value and many diseases are cured by its effects. The soft beams of the rising sun are especially beneficial to the eyes and strengthen our bones. It is because of the habit of seeing the sunrise daily that the early risers are always healthy. Sunrise has been a subject of poetry also. In the summers, the sellers of cold drinks raise loud cries with great emphasis on “cold,” “sweet,” “tasty,”etc. In the winters, sellers of tea raise the cry “hot tea” again and again. One can buy newspapers, books and comics too. Sometimes we can witness strange disturbances on the platform. In the rush, pickpockets and snatchers get a chance of playing their trick. One should be wary of loose hanging wires and potholes too. When the train arrives, there is a mad kind of rush around it. Passengers get off and jump onto the train in a hurry. Example 9: A Scary Dream

Dreams are sometimes very pleasant, and sometimes equally unpleasant. Last month I had a horribly dreadful dream. Before going to bed, I recall watching an odd movie on television. As soon as I entered the world of sleep, I was with my friends running wildly towards a jungle. As we entered the jungle, we saw a very big tree laden with red fruit. We all made the decision to scale the tree and consume the fruit. Once we were settled on a branch, we heard a loud roaring. Looking down the tree, we saw a pride of lions. The branch of the tree could not bear all our weight and began to snap. Just then, I cried loudly, and as I woke up, I found myself lying on the floor outside my bedroom. I’ll never forget this terrifying dream, just as I’ll never forget the lions’ enraged expressions and our dangerous position in the woods. Thank God, I don’t live in a lion prone area. (165 words)

Apart from classroom education, online education is on a rise as well. Students, even professionals can enrol for it as a part-time, or full time course for their upskilling, from anywhere and at any time. Popular in such education is a practice, in which students watch videos of already recorded teaching and create extended classroom communities for discussions or virtual classrooms etc. It eliminates the travel time and travel costs of students. Unable to contain his excitement, Rahul embarked on an adventure of a lifetime. With the map tightly gripped in his hands, he set off into the unknown. As he ventured deeper into the dense forest, the trees whispered secrets, and the leaves rustled with anticipation.

Hours turned into days as Rahul encountered various obstacles along the way. He crossed treacherous rivers, climbed towering cliffs, and navigated through a maze of thorny bushes. Each step brought him closer to the treasure, but it also tested his determination and resilience.

Finally, after days of perseverance, Rahul reached the hidden clearing where the treasure was rumored to be. With bated breath, he started digging, his heart pounding with anticipation. As the shovel struck something hard, Rahul’s eyes widened with astonishment. He had found it—the long-lost treasure!

Filled with a sense of triumph and wonder, Rahul uncovered a chest filled with glittering jewels, ancient artifacts, and a map leading to even greater adventures. This exhilarating experience taught Rahul the value of courage, perseverance, and the joy of exploration.

Title: “The Enchanted Garden”

The Enchanted Garden is a hidden jewel in the middle of the city, concealed behind an iron-wrought gate. A kaleidoscope of vivid colors and seductive scents engulfed your senses as you passed through the gate. Flowers of every color bloomed in the gentle breeze, their petals glittering like exquisite silk.

The garden was a tapestry of nature’s wonders, with a symphony of fragrances tickling the nose, a kaleidoscope of butterflies fluttering from one bloom to the next, and the relaxing sound of songbirds resonating through the air. The canopy was supplied by towering trees, whose branches intertwined like a natural hug.

Meandering stone paths guided visitors through the garden’s labyrinth, leading them to hidden alcoves and secret nooks. In one corner, a cascading waterfall created a mesmerizing display, its crystalline waters forming a pool where colorful koi fish gracefully swam.

As you wandered deeper into the garden, a serene pond came into view. Lily pads floated atop the shimmering water, while elegant swans glided across its surface with an air of tranquility. The dappled sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting a gentle glow that added to the garden’s ethereal charm.

Time seemed to stand still within the Enchanted Garden, allowing visitors to escape the chaos of the outside world and immerse themselves in a realm of natural beauty and serenity. It was a place where dreams were born, and where the soul could find solace amidst the harmony of nature.

The title” The Power of Recycling”

Title: “The Solar System: A Cosmic Wonder”

The vast expanse of space holds secrets and wonders that have captivated humanity for centuries. Among the celestial mysteries, the Solar System shines as a cosmic marvel, consisting of the Sun, eight planets, numerous moons, asteroids, and comets.

At the heart of our Solar System lies the Sun, a blazing ball of gas that provides light and heat to sustain life on Earth. Orbiting the Sun are the planets, each with its unique characteristics and composition.

Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun, is a barren world of extreme temperatures, with scorching days and freezing nights. Venus, shrouded in a thick atmosphere of toxic gases, experiences a runaway greenhouse effect, making it the hottest planet in our Solar System.

Earth, our home, stands out as a blue gem teeming with life. Its diverse ecosystems, vast oceans, and life-sustaining atmosphere make it a haven for countless species, including humanity. Mars, often called the “Red Planet,” exhibits a rusty surface and polar ice caps, sparking our curiosity about the possibility of past or present life.

The gas giants—Jupiter and Saturn—dominate the outer reaches of the Solar System. Jupiter, with its swirling storms and the iconic Great Red Spot, is the largest planet, while Saturn captivates with its majestic rings, composed of ice and rock particles. Uranus and Neptune, known as the “ice giants,” are characterized by their frigid temperatures and methane-rich atmospheres.

Beyond the planets, the Solar System is adorned with a multitude of moons. Earth’s moon, a constant companion, illuminates our nights and influences our tides. Jupiter’s moon, Io, showcases active volcanoes, while Saturn’s moon, Titan, possesses lakes of liquid methane. These moons provide glimpses into the diversity of worlds within our celestial neighborhood.

Asteroids and comets, remnants from the early formation of the Solar System, orbiting the Sun as well. These celestial bodies, often referred to as “cosmic wanderers,” offer valuable insights into the origins and evolution of our cosmic home.

Studying the Solar System unlocks the mysteries of our universe, inspires scientific curiosity, and fuels our imagination. Through space exploration missions and telescopic observations, we continue to deepen our understanding of the planets, moons, and other celestial objects that make up this cosmic tapestry.

  • Descriptive Essay

You ever read a really good travel essay? It makes you believe that you are there with the writer, it paints a vivid picture. This is because the essay is so descriptive, that it appeals to our senses. As a result, our brain starts imagining it. Let’s learn more about a descriptive essay.

Suggested Videos

What is a descriptive essay.

Our brain is so powerful that it can easily imagine scenarios and make use of our senses. The job of such an essay is to appeal to our senses in a way that it creates an image in our minds. Hence a descriptive essay plays with at least one of our five senses (touch, smell, taste, hearing, sight).

In other words, the description of the person, place or thing in an essay should be really vivid. This means it after reading the essay, the reader should be left feeling like they actually know the person, have held the object or have visited the place.

Descriptive Essay

In the light of the above-mentioned things, it is comfortable to say that a descriptive essay provides for artistic freedom. For example, assume you’re writing about a house.

Instead of simply stating that the house was beautiful, you should talk about the color of the house, the garden in front of it i.e. all the details about the house. In that way, the readers would be able to imagine the house because of a nicely written essay.

Contents of a Descriptive Essay

As it is with most of the written forms of English literature, the basic structure of a descriptive essay also comprises of an introduction, a body, and the conclusion.

  • The introduction of a descriptive essay should be interesting enough to catch a reader’s attention. The introduction should be all about creating a base or a background for the person, place or thing you’re going to describe in your essay.
  • Next, the main body of a descriptive essay should appeal to the reader’s senses. This includes unfolding the information by creating images in the reader’s mind. A trick to achieving this is to explain how the subject about which you’re writing in your descriptive essay, appeals to your senses.
  • Lastly, the conclusion should summarize the whole essay. Along with again going over the main details about the essay’s subject, you should end the essay in a way that it gives a sense of completion.

How to Write a Descriptive Essay?

Before starting off with a descriptive essay, thinking about the subject in detail will be your best bet. Just take some time off and imagine about the subject. This means to imagine how the subject appeals to your senses- how does it smell, looks like and so on.

Further, if the subject is related to a past experience think about how it felt or your experience with the subject. Next, express all of these on the paper right in front of you. You can also take some time to think about how you want your essay to unfold. Lastly, a revision of the essay provides a great opportunity for improvements and small tweaks. Remember that a descriptive essay is all about teasing the reader’s senses.

A Solved Example For You

Q:   A descriptive essay should:
