Academic regalia, also known as the “cap and gown,” varies according to the degree conferred and the level of scholarship attained. The bachelor’s gown is a simple robe that covers the entire body. The master’s gown has longer, closed sleeves. The doctoral robe usually is the most elaborate; it is made of velvet, has three stripes on the arms, and includes a hood.

For faculty and doctoral robes, the robe itself is usually specific to the university, while the hood trim indicates the academic discipline. In addition, the faculty member wears the robe indicative of his or her highest degree. If the highest degree is an honorary degree, the faculty member has a choice of wearing the robe of the school that conferred the honorary degree, or the one that conferred the highest earned degree. Bachelor’s and master’s candidates wear a square mortarboard. Doctoral students and faculty usually wear a tam.

In this feature we look at the details of faculty regalia — explaining why they wear what they wear.

Caps & Gowns, Hoods & Cords: A Guide to Commencement

By Kelly Saavedra ksaavedra(through)cmu.edu

  • Marketing & Communications
  • maderer(through)cmu.edu

This Sunday, several thousand people will process through Gesling Stadium for Carnegie Mellon University's 122nd Commencement Ceremony. Among them will be faculty, students, university leaders and honorary degree recipients.

Nearly all will be dressed in black, but their academic rank will be identifiable by noting a few subtle differences in their regalia.

The bachelor's degree recipient wears a plain black gown with a bell sleeve and a red tassel on the cap, or mortar board, and no hood.

The master's degree recipient wears a black tassel, a colored hood and a gown that has a visibly odd sleeve. The rear of the sleeve is oblong in shape, square-cut and closed off with a cut-out arc. Hood color varies, depending on the field of academic study. At Carnegie Mellon, the primary hood colors for master's degree recipients are (with exceptions):

  • Brown or Pink — College of Fine Arts, Heinz College or Entertainment Technology;
  • Drab (light brown) or Copper — Tepper School of Business;
  • Golden Yellow — School of Computer Science, Mellon College of Science or Dietrich College;
  • Lemon Yellow or Peacock Blue — Heinz College;
  • Orange — College of Engineering or Integrated Innovation Institute; and
  • White — Dietrich College.

The Ph.D. recipient's gown has velvet facing down the front and three velvet bars on each sleeve. The blue Ph.D hood is longer and wider than the master’s hood, and the tassel on the cap is gold.

A feature unique to all Carnegie Mellon hoods is they are lined with Tartan plaid.

Faculty and university leaders who have Ph.D.'s may choose to wear a tam instead of the cap, or mortar board. Various stoles and cords may be draped over anyone's gown. Cords signify academic honors, while stoles may represent athletics or country of origin.

Those in the procession wearing regalia that is not black are likely to be faculty wearing the colors of the school from where they received their highest degree. Four bars on the sleeve indicate the wearer is a sitting president.

Academic Regalia at Graduation, Explained

University commencements are exciting celebrations of student achievement, and they also provide faculty, students, and their families a visible connection to the birth of the modern university way back in the 12th century.

The black robes worn by graduating students and their faculty are known as academic “regalia” – and there’s a difference between a master’s degree gown vs bachelor’s.

While undergraduate graduation robes may all seem the same, at the graduate level regalia tell a rich story of the graduate’s academic journey. That is, they do if you know what to look for!

At the Masters level, regalia consists of a simple black gown. What distinguishes a Masters level gown from a Baccalaureate gown is the sleeves. Masters level gowns usually have long, extended sleeves. Historically, those sleeves could have been used as pockets.

Master’s regalia meaning

What do masters graduates wear? At the master’s level, regalia consists of a simple black gown. What distinguishes a master’s level gown from a baccalaureate gown are the sleeves. Master’s level gowns usually have long, extended sleeves. Historically, those sleeves could have been used as pockets.

The headgear for the master’s regalia is traditionally the square mortarboard cap. (Graduates wear the mortarboard only at the full University commencement, as they get in the way of the College hooding ceremony.) At University commencement, wear the mortarboard tassel on the right. After your degree is conferred, move the tassel to the left.

The master’s hood is a modern interpretation of the hooded robes worn by medieval monks who taught in the early universities. The monks would use their hoods to keep warm in the winters and also to collect alms. The master’s hood is 3.5 feet long and features a three-inch velvet trim that indicates the graduate’s academic discipline. The inside of the hood, displayed on the graduate’s back, shows the colors of the school from which the student graduated.

Master’s hood colors

Master’s students at the College of Graduate and Professional Studies receive hoods with UNE blue and silver on the inside, and the following colors on the outside:

  • Master of Science in Applied Nutrition : Science Gold
  • Master of Science in Education : Light Blue
  • Master of Science in Health Informatics : Science Gold
  • Master of Public Health : Salmon
  • Master of Social Work : Citron
  • Master of Healthcare Administration : Drab (light brown)

Certificates of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) regalia

Students graduating from the post-master’s Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study program wear the light blue hood of Education with a light blue cord indicating their advanced study.

Doctoral regalia meaning

At the doctoral level, regalia consists of a more elaborate gown with a five-inch velvet panel down the front and three velvet bars on each sleeve. The velvet trim on a doctoral gown indicates the degree and academic discipline of the graduate. Some schools choose a color other than black for their doctoral regalia. Harvard University’s doctoral robes, for instance, are the school’s trademark crimson color.

Doctoral regalia colors

Graduates of UNE’s Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) program wear black gowns with light blue velvet, showing their connection to the field of education.

Doctoral regalia with navy blue or black velvet trim indicates that the wearer has earned a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree. Other colors of trim indicate other academic disciplines. At University commencement, you may see regalia with lilac trim (Doctorate of Dental Medicine), Olive Green (Pharmacy Doctorate), or Kelly Green (Medical or Osteopathic Doctorate).

The doctoral hood, like the master’s hood, features the colors of the graduate’s university on the inside and the color of the academic discipline on the outside.

Doctoral tam

The doctoral headgear is traditionally the soft tam. Some tams have four corners and look like floppy mortarboards. Others have six corners. The style of tam is determined by the school from which one graduates.

Fun fact: most doctoral tams have the tassel sewn to the fabric of the hat. Instead of moving the tassel from right to left, you turn the entire tam so that the tassel “moves” to the left side!

Cords and stoles for graduation regalia

You may also see graduates at commencement wearing stoles or cords. These indicate that the wearer is a member of an honor society, or has earned honors in other ways. Veterans or active duty students in the US military, for instance, have their service recognized with a red, white, and blue cord.

In the same way that the regalia robes and hoods are historical descendants of the clothing of medieval monks, cords were used in the Catholic and Anglican churches to distinguish between the varying ranks of the clergy.

In 2019, CGPS introduced the silver service cord for Public Health graduates. These students have e arned honors by engaging in service activities . If you see a graduate with a silver service cord, ask them about their service experiences. They’ve done some amazing things!

Determining the meanings of different pieces of academic regalia

Commencement may look like a sea of more-or-less uniform black gowns, but with a sharp eye, you can tell where the graduate earned their degree, what degree they earned, what honors they earned during their degree, and in what field they earned their degree.

That’s not bad for an outfit that’s more than 900 years old!

Commencement home

Academic regalia are the traditional dress for degree candidates participating in college, school and department convocations, as well as the university-wide commencement ceremony.

All regalia may be obtained through the University Co-op .

For those earning a bachelor’s degree, a black gown and mortarboard are worn. A tassel in the color designated for the specific academic discipline is attached to the mortarboard. A matching stole completes the regalia for bachelor’s degree candidates.

Bachelor's degree regalia must be purchased by April 12.

Master’s degree students wear a modified gown with longer sleeves, the mortarboard with a color appropriate tassel, and a hood. New in 2022, the custom black masters gown now has burnt orange flat braiding down the front paneling. The hood is often presented to the degree recipient within the convocation ceremony. Note: graduates must still purchase the hood from the University Co-op.

Master's degree regalia must be purchased by April 12.

The most elaborate regalia on display at Commencement are worn by those receiving a doctoral degree. A doctor's gown is a much fuller gown and is decorated with velvet lapels and three chevrons sewn onto the sleeves of the gown that designate the recipient as a “doctor.” In place of the mortarboard, doctoral students wear a tam, a velvet hat with a gold tassel attached that is much less rigid in construction.

Doctoral regalia are unique in the sense that it is often worn many times following the degree recipient's own graduation, especially for those who pursue careers in academia. It distinguishes the faculty member as a graduate of a specific institution. As is common for many research universities, unique  doctoral regalia  was designed and customized for the university and may only be worn by those receiving their degrees from The University of Texas at Austin. Doctoral regalia may be purchased or rented.

Doctoral regalia must be purchased by March 1. These items are custom-made and require approximately eight weeks to produce.

Doctoral candidates who wish to rent regalia must do so by March 29.

The academic dress worn by graduates during Commencement dates back to the Middle Ages when flowing gowns kept scholars warm in cold and drafty buildings.

Modern graduates traditionally also wear a cap (in medieval times, an emblem of intellectual independence) to complete the ceremonial ensemble. Elements of the regalia are different depending upon the level of the degree being awarded.

Most are based on the American Council on Education’s Academic Costume Code and are standardized across the nation.

Differences Between Rental Regalia Package and Finer-Quality Regalia Package

  • Please note that the rental regalia package meets the traditional requirements for doctoral regalia at Northwestern. However,  the fabric is more lightweight than the finer-quality regalia. The rental regalia is intended for one-time use, has open sleeves, and has a removable tassel. It does not have embroidered school seals on the panels. It is sized generally according to the weight and height information you provide.
  • The finer-quality academic regalia is intended for use for the duration of your academic career. It is made with higher-grade fabric that is dry clean only. It has bell sleeves and embroidered school seals on the panels. The tassel is sewn onto the tam. It is custom-made according to the measurements you provide.
  • Graduates should allow eight to ten weeks for fine-quality regalia orders to arrive.

Please note: these details describe the finer-quality academic regalia package.

The gown body is purple with black velvet front panels softly curving around the neck and sweeping down the length of the gown. A special Northwestern University “1851” embroidered emblem is placed at chest level on each of the front panels. Each of the purple double bell sleeves has three black velvet sleeve chevrons. The gown has a pocket slit on the wearer’s right and a zipper closure.

The hood is standard doctoral style with a black shell, a velvet trim, and a purple satin lining with a gold satin chevron.

MFA graduates wear a brown hood while PHD graduates wear a dark blue hood.

MFA graduates wear a traditional cap while PhD graduates wear a tam.

The tam is a four-corner style cap in black velvet accented with a gold metallic tassel.

Remembrance of a Roadrunner

Everything you need to know about UTSA’s academic regalia

DECEMBER 3, 2021  — During a typical Commencement celebration at UTSA, everyone is wearing a cap and gown, but some look very different than the others. We decided to tap into the history behind the academic regalia to find out what the different colors and styles represent.

The tradition of the academic dress dates back nearly eight centuries. In medieval Europe, all townsmen wore long, flowing robes or gowns. The materials and colors varied greatly, according to the wealth and rank of the individual and were governed by royal decree. Gradually, distinctive gowns were developed for the various professions, trades and guilds. Today, this tradition remains for gowns of religious orders and judiciary, and in academic regalia.

Through the years great diversity in color and style of cap, gown and hood have evolved. In 1895 a commission was established to come up with a uniform code for academic costume. Today the gowns, hoods and mortarboards worn by the graduating students of most institutions, including UTSA, follow this code.

Bobby De Leon is a first-generation student who earned his bachelor's degree in music education.

masters vs phd gown

At UTSA the gowns and mortarboards are navy blue. The style of the gowns vary depending on the degree the student receives. The sleeves of the gowns worn by the master’s degree recipients are square at the end. The doctoral degree recipients’ gowns have flowing sleeves with three bars of velvet and a facing of velvet down the front with the UTSA seal. The velvet trim is five inches wide for the doctoral degree. The color of the velvet border indicates the degree and align with the tassel colors listed below.

masters vs phd gown

The biggest difference in regalia can be found in the hood, which identifies the graduate degree and institution in which it was awarded. For master’s students, the hood is short. For those receiving a doctoral degree, the hood is longer and lined with silk in the official colors of the student’s institution. UTSA’s hoods are lined in orange with one white chevron.

masters vs phd gown

The academic caps have their own special meanings. Developed in the 15th century, some caps were stiff, some soft, some square and some round with a tuft in the center. The tassel used today is an elaboration of the tuft. While some institutions still use the round caps, most institutions, including UTSA, have adopted the mortarboard style that comes from Oxford University. Students earning terminal degrees wear a tam.

The tassel color for graduate degrees indicates the discipline in which the degree has been earned, except that a gold bullion tassel is worn by recipients of doctoral degrees. For a bachelor’s degree, the tassel's colors represent the university in a tricolor of orange, blue and white. The gold cord, worn by some undergraduate students, indicates graduation with honors: summa cum laude, magna cum laude or cum laude.

UTSA leadership and faculty wear the robe specific to the university where they earned their highest degree. President Taylor Eighmy ’s regalia is indicative of the University of New Hampshire, where he earned his Ph.D. in environmental engineering. Eighmy is in the Roadrunner spirit with his orange hood, which actually signifies his engineering degree. He also wears the UTSA Presidential Medallion, which symbolizes the authority and responsibility vested in the President. The brass medallion has the university seal on one side and the words “Presented by the UTSA Development Board in honor of the University’s 25th anniversary—1994” on the other side.

President Eighmy’s hood represents his Ph.D. in environmental engineering. He also wears the UTSA Presidential Medallion.

Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Kimberly Andrews Espy purchased her regalia when she was a faculty member at Southern Illinois University and needed it to participate in the hooding of her first doctoral student. The hood is red and white, representing her doctoral alma mater, University of Houston, and the piping on the sleeve chevrons is gold, representing her science degree. Her favorite features of the gown are the buttons that anchor the hood in place: one hidden inside the zipper and another on the back. Another distinguishing feature of her regalia is what it lacks—like a number of faculty, Espy eschews tradition by wearing neither a tam nor mortarboard at ceremonies.

  • The authorized third-party representative must present their own NYU ID card or government-issued photo ID at pickup.

If your third party is not affiliated with NYU, meaning they do not have an NYU ID card, you must sponsor them in JRNY. Submit a  Sponsor Request form  prior to your third party arriving on campus so they are able to easily access the building.

Graduates can also use Third Party Pick-up to pick up Grad Alley wristbands and  Founders Day Tassels.

Master’s and doctoral candidates or graduates may prefer to purchase custom-made academic attire. In particular, those entering the profession of academia may prefer the fine quality regalia suitable for wearing regularly in academic ceremonies. Master’s and doctoral candidates or graduates who wish to purchase custom-made academic attire can do so at the Herff Jones academic regalia website .

Class rings can be  ordered online  or at the  N YU Bookstore . A display of select rings are available to view in-person at the NYU Bookstore located at 726 Broadway, New York, New York, 10003.

If you reach graduation as a top-ranking Baccalaureate candidate or graduate, you will be named a  University Honors Scholar  and awarded the NYU Founders Day Award. Recipients of this honor receive a gold tassel to wear during Commencement and a personalized certificate.

Please note that the University does not distribute tassels, cords, or stoles for Latin honors. Some schools might distribute cords for certain internal honors. Please reach out to your school with questions about departmental honors.

Much of the color and meaning of the attire is found in the master’s and doctoral hoods. These are lined with satin in the color(s) of the institution conferring the degree and have a velvet border in the color signifying the degree of learning. See the  History, Regalia, and Program page  for the list of degrees associated with each color.

Caps and Gowns (Regalia)

At USC, all undergraduate and master’s robes are black, while doctoral robes are created custom for the university in a beautiful cardinal.

Undergraduates and master’s degree students may rent or purchase robes from the USC Bookstores for Commencement. Each rental comes with a tassel for the cap that can be removed and kept as a souvenir. The only official regalia decorations offered by USC are undergraduates’ honor cords. However, many students choose to augment their cap and gown with floral leis or customized stoles.

Gowns and hoods of rented regalia should be returned to the drop-off bins located around campus.

New USC Regalia

The new regalia, featuring a USC Shield and cardinal piping, was created to enhance and personalize the USC commencement experience. While the new customized gowns are the preferred commencement regalia, there is no requirement for graduates beyond the traditional black robes.

Graduate Student Regalia

Special instructions for master’s degree and doctoral students: please be very clear when telling the staff what degree you are earning, to make sure you get the right color trim on your hood; a doctorate is different from a Ph.D., and various doctorate hoods can be very different colors. Please review the color key for regalia for additional details.

College of Engineering Graduation

Academic Attire

Academic attire is required for all graduating students who plan to attend either of the Michigan Engineering graduation ceremonies.

During the celebration, the tassel is worn on the right front corner of the cap and is moved to the left after the degree has been conferred . The tassel color represents the field of study; engineering graduates may wear an orange tassel and LSA computer science/data science graduates may wear a golden yellow tassel.  Black or maize-and-blue tassels are also appropriate.

  • Bachelor’s degree – tassel, cap and bachelor’s gown are purchased.
  • Master’s degree – tassel, cap, master’s gown and hood are purchased. U-M Michigan Engineering graduation hoods have maize and blue satin on the inside, with orange velvet on the outside.
  • Doctoral degree – tassel, cap, doctoral gown, and hood are rented and should be reserved early in the term. Custom doctoral attire can be purchased at any time during the year; orders generally take 6-8 weeks.

Honor Cords

The honor cord – which can be gold or white, single or double – denotes students graduating with honors. Engineering students eligible to wear an honor cord must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher based on at least 45 hours of credit that have been completed while enrolled in Michigan Engineering through the end of the last completed term of study. There are no honor cords specific to grade-point-average distinction levels. Honor cords may be purchased at stores selling academic attire.

Distinction Grade Point Average

Distinction levels are noted in the printed program and on your final transcript. Please note that your GPA will not be rounded up.

  • Cum Laude 3.20-3.49
  • Magna Cum Laude 3.50-3.74
  • Summa Cum Laude 3.75-4.00

We encourage graduating students, who are in the military, to wear their military uniforms instead of traditional academic attire.

Local Bookstores

Academic attire is available from the following stores.  Shop early in the term for the best selection of gown sizes and hood and tassel colors. The local bookstores have complete lists of the academic color for each discipline.
