The Department of Physics and Astronomy "Ettore Majorana" selects Italian and foreign students with a Master's Degree for admission to the PhD course in Physics. The aim of the Ph.D. in Physics is to train young people, with a solid and extensive basic preparation and experts in advanced fields of Physics and its applications, to be included in cutting-edge research activities at Universities, Research Centers, Public Bodies, private entities and also in advanced production sectors.

Course Overview and Educational Aims

The primary objective of the PhD course is therefore to develop and obtain a critical capacity that allows them to face and solve open problems (research in fundamental and applied physics, problems of interest to industry, etc.) with a correct scientific approach. To this end, various paths with specific profiles and educational objectives are activated, from those related to basic research, both experimental and theoretical (in nuclear and subnuclear physics, theoretical physics of fundamental interactions and quantum technologies, nuclear and particle astrophysics) to those of more applicative interest (applied physics).

Job Opportunities

The employment and professional opportunities range from those most mainly related to basic and applied research activities in the academic field (post-doctoral positions in Italian and foreign universities and in Italian and international research institutions, which mark the beginning of the cursus honorum towards permanent positions) to research in Italian and multinational industries. Further opportunities include positions of the highest technological level in university laboratories and research institutions, responsible for the operation and updating of the complex machines that allow the achievement of scientific results. In addition, all those occupations in which the solution of complex problems is of central importance, are within the reach of PhDs in physics.

Other information

Further details on the PhD Programme in Physics are available in the Ministry form for the 39th cycle (scheda ministeriale del dottorato, in Italian) .

Jeong Min Park earns 2024 Schmidt Science Fellowship

Physics graduate student Jeong Min (Jane) Park is among the 32 exceptional early-career scientists worldwide chosen to receive the prestigious 2024  Schmidt Science Fellows award.

As a 2024 Schmidt Science Fellow, Park’s postdoctoral work will seek to directly detect phases that could host new particles by employing an instrument that can visualize subatomic-scale phenomena.

With her advisor, Pablo Jarillo-Herrero, the Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Physics, Park’s research at MIT focuses on discovering novel quantum phases of matter.

“When there are many electrons in a material, their interactions can lead to collective behaviors that are not expected from individual particles, known as emergent phenomena,” explains Park. “One example is superconductivity, where interacting electrons combine together as a pair at low temperatures to conduct electricity without energy loss.”

During her PhD studies, she has investigated novel types of superconductivity by designing new materials with targeted interactions and topology. In particular, she used graphene, atomically thin two-dimensional layers of graphite, the same material as pencil lead, and turned it into a “magic” material. This so-called magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene provided an extraordinarily strong form of superconductivity that is robust under high magnetic fields . Later, she found a whole “magic family” of these materials, elucidating the key mechanisms behind superconductivity and interaction-driven phenomena. These results have provided a new platform to study emergent phenomena in two dimensions, which can lead to innovations in electronics and quantum technology.

Park says she is looking forward to her postdoctoral studies with Princeton University physics professor Ali Yazdani's lab.

“I’m excited about the idea of discovering and studying new quantum phenomena that could further the understanding of fundamental physics,” says Park. “Having explored interaction-driven phenomena through the design of new materials, I’m now aiming to broaden my perspective and expertise to address a different kind of question, by combining my background in material design with the sophisticated local-scale measurements that I will adopt during my postdoc.”

She explains that elementary particles are classified as either bosons or fermions, with contrasting behaviors upon interchanging two identical particles, referred to as exchange statistics; bosons remain unchanged, while fermions acquire a minus sign in their quantum wavefunction.

Theories predict the existence of fundamentally different particles known as non-abelian anyons, whose wavefunctions braid upon particle exchange. Such a braiding process can be used to encode and store information, potentially opening the door to fault-tolerant quantum computing in the future.

Since 2018, this prestigious postdoctoral program has sought to break down silos among scientific fields to solve the world’s biggest challenges and support future leaders in STEM.

Schmidt Science Fellows, an initiative of Schmidt Sciences, delivered in partnership with the Rhodes Trust, identifies, develops, and amplifies the next generation of science leaders, by building a community of scientists and supporters of interdisciplinary science and leveraging this network to drive sector-wide change. The 2024 fellows consist of 17 nationalities across North America, Europe, and Asia.

Nominated candidates undergo a rigorous selection process that includes a paper-based academic review with panels of experts in their home disciplines and final interviews with panels, including senior representatives from across many scientific disciplines and different business sectors.

PhD Alumnus Dimitrios Kranas Receives 2024 Distinguished Dissertation Award in STEM

Dimitrios Kranas

The LSU Alumni Association 2024 Distinguished Dissertation Award in Science, Engineering and Technology has been awarded to Dimitrios Kranas from Thessaloniki, Greece, who joined LSU and the Hearne Institute of Theoretical Physics under the mentorship of Associate Professor of Physics Ivan Agullo in 2018.

His dissertation, “ Entanglement in the Hawking Effect: From Astrophysical to Optical Black Holes ,” opens a promising window for the observability of the quantum origin of the Hawking effect in the lab using different input quantum states of light.

“In essence, Dr. Kranas' dissertation stands out as the most exemplary PhD thesis produced under my guidance,” said Agullo. “Dr. Kranas' dissertation is exceptional, incorporating innovative, multi-disciplinary work that bridges gravity, quantum information, optics, and condensed matter. His research connects theoretical developments with experiments in analog gravity systems, yielding a powerful set of tools applicable to diverse collaborations, including experimental groups. It is a rare accomplishment for a graduate student's theoretical work to reach such heights.”

2017 BS alumnus from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Kranas received his PhD in physics from the LSU College of Science in August 2023 and now works as a postdoctoral researcher at Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris, France.

“It was in the lively ambiance of the enchanting city of Thessaloniki in northern Greece I first developed a passion for solving riddles and understanding the mysteries of nature,” Kranas said. “This led me to pursue a degree in physics and delve deeper into theoretical physics.”

Kranas investigates the confluence of field theory, general relativity and quantum information.

Associate Professor Ivan Agullo with 2023 PhD Alumnus Dimitrios Kranas

“At the heart of theoretical physics lies the tantalizing challenge of reconciling Einstein’s theory of relativity with the enigmatic realm of quantum mechanics,” Kranas said. “My scholarly pursuits are centered on unraveling this intricate connection, with a specific focus on investigating the quantum properties of matter in the presence of gravitational influences, such as particle creation in the vicinity of black holes and during the cosmic expansion.”

Each year, the LSU Alumni Association and the LSU Pinkie Gordon Lane Graduate School recognize two LSU doctoral students whose research and writing demonstrate superior scholarship. Read more about the 2024 recipients here .
