• Set design: Consider how the setting of the film influenced its other elements. Did it add or subtract from the experience for you? If the movie was filmed in a real place, was this location well-chosen?
• Score or soundtrack: Did it work with the scenes? Was it over/under-used? Was it suspenseful? Amusing? Irritating? A soundtrack can make or break a movie, especially if the songs have a particular message or meaning to them.

Film Analysis Example #1: The Intouchables

Frustrated Communication in Ex Machina ’s Opening Sequence

Alex Garland’s 2015 science fiction film Ex Machina follows a young programmer’s attempts to determine whether or not an android possesses a consciousness complicated enough to pass as human. The film is celebrated for its thought-provoking depiction of the anxiety over whether a nonhuman entity could mimic or exceed human abilities, but analyzing the early sections of the film, before artificial intelligence is even introduced, reveals a compelling examination of humans’ inability to articulate their thoughts and feelings. In its opening sequence, Ex Machina establishes that it’s not only about the difficulty of creating a machine that can effectively talk to humans, but about human beings who struggle to find ways to communicate with each other in an increasingly digital world.

[ Ed.:  The piece's opening introduces the film with a plot summary that doesn't give away too much and a brief summary of the critical conversation that has centered around the film. Then, however, it deviates from this conversation by suggesting that Ex Machina has things to say about humanity before non-human characters even appear. Off to a great start. ]

The film’s first establishing shots set the action in a busy modern office. A woman sits at a computer, absorbed in her screen. The camera looks at her through a glass wall, one of many in the shot. The reflections of passersby reflected in the glass and the workspace’s dim blue light make it difficult to determine how many rooms are depicted. The camera cuts to a few different young men typing on their phones, their bodies partially concealed both by people walking between them and the camera and by the stylized modern furniture that surrounds them. The fourth shot peeks over a computer monitor at a blonde man working with headphones in. A slight zoom toward his face suggests that this is an important character, and the cut to a point-of-view shot looking at his computer screen confirms this. We later learn that this is Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a young programmer whose perspective the film follows.

The rest of the sequence cuts between shots from Caleb’s P.O.V. and reaction shots of his face, as he receives and processes the news that he has won first prize in a staff competition. Shocked, Caleb dives for his cellphone and texts several people the news. Several people immediately respond with congratulatory messages, and after a moment the woman from the opening shot runs in to give him a hug. At this point, the other people in the room look up, smile, and start clapping, while Caleb smiles disbelievingly—perhaps even anxiously—and the camera subtly zooms in a bit closer. Throughout the entire sequence, there is no sound other than ambient electronic music that gets slightly louder and more textured as the sequence progresses. A jump cut to an aerial view of a glacial landscape ends the sequence and indicates that Caleb is very quickly transported into a very unfamiliar setting, implying that he will have difficulty adjusting to this sudden change in circumstances.

[ Ed.:  These paragraphs are mostly descriptive. They give readers the information they will need to understand the argument the piece is about to offer. While passages like this can risk becoming boring if they dwell on unimportant details, the author wisely limits herself to two paragraphs and maintains a driving pace through her prose style choices (like an almost exclusive reliance on active verbs). ]

Without any audible dialogue or traditional expository setup of the main characters, this opening sequence sets viewers up to make sense of Ex Machina ’s visual style and its exploration of the ways that technology can both enhance and limit human communication. The choice to make the dialogue inaudible suggests that in-person conversations have no significance. Human-to-human conversations are most productive in this sequence when they are mediated by technology. Caleb’s first response when he hears his good news is to text his friends rather than tell the people sitting around him, and he makes no move to take his headphones out when the in-person celebration finally breaks out. Everyone in the building is on their phones, looking at screens, or has headphones in, and the camera is looking at screens through Caleb’s viewpoint for at least half of the sequence.  

Rather than simply muting the specific conversations that Caleb has with his coworkers, the ambient soundtrack replaces all the noise that a crowded building in the middle of a workday would ordinarily have. This silence sets the uneasy tone that characterizes the rest of the film, which is as much a horror-thriller as a piece of science fiction. Viewers get the sense that all the sounds that humans make as they walk around and talk to each other are being intentionally filtered out by some presence, replaced with a quiet electronic beat that marks the pacing of the sequence, slowly building to a faster tempo. Perhaps the sound of people is irrelevant: only the visual data matters here. Silence is frequently used in the rest of the film as a source of tension, with viewers acutely aware that it could be broken at any moment. Part of the horror of the research bunker, which will soon become the film’s primary setting, is its silence, particularly during sequences of Caleb sneaking into restricted areas and being startled by a sudden noise.

The visual style of this opening sequence reinforces the eeriness of the muted humans and electronic soundtrack. Prominent use of shallow focus to depict a workspace that is constructed out of glass doors and walls makes it difficult to discern how large the space really is. The viewer is thus spatially disoriented in each new setting. This layering of glass and mirrors, doubling some images and obscuring others, is used later in the film when Caleb meets the artificial being Ava (Alicia Vikander), who is not allowed to leave her glass-walled living quarters in the research bunker. The similarity of these spaces visually reinforces the film’s late revelation that Caleb has been manipulated by Nathan Bates (Oscar Isaac), the troubled genius who creates Ava.

[ Ed.:  In these paragraphs, the author cites the information about the scene she's provided to make her argument. Because she's already teased the argument in the introduction and provided an account of her evidence, it doesn't strike us as unreasonable or far-fetched here. Instead, it appears that we've naturally arrived at the same incisive, fascinating points that she has. ]

A few other shots in the opening sequence more explicitly hint that Caleb is already under Nathan’s control before he ever arrives at the bunker. Shortly after the P.O.V shot of Caleb reading the email notification that he won the prize, we cut to a few other P.O.V. shots, this time from the perspective of cameras in Caleb’s phone and desktop computer. These cameras are not just looking at Caleb, but appear to be scanning him, as the screen flashes in different color lenses and small points appear around Caleb’s mouth, eyes, and nostrils, tracking the smallest expressions that cross his face. These small details indicate that Caleb is more a part of this digital space than he realizes, and also foreshadow the later revelation that Nathan is actively using data collected by computers and webcams to manipulate Caleb and others. The shots from the cameras’ perspectives also make use of a subtle fisheye lens, suggesting both the wide scope of Nathan’s surveillance capacities and the slightly distorted worldview that motivates this unethical activity.

[ Ed.: This paragraph uses additional details to reinforce the piece's main argument. While this move may not be as essential as the one in the preceding paragraphs, it does help create the impression that the author is noticing deliberate patterns in the film's cinematography, rather than picking out isolated coincidences to make her points. ]

Taken together, the details of Ex Machina ’s stylized opening sequence lay the groundwork for the film’s long exploration of the relationship between human communication and technology. The sequence, and the film, ultimately suggests that we need to develop and use new technologies thoughtfully, or else the thing that makes us most human—our ability to connect through language—might be destroyed by our innovations. All of the aural and visual cues in the opening sequence establish a world in which humans are utterly reliant on technology and yet totally unaware of the nefarious uses to which a brilliant but unethical person could put it.

In doing this, the conclusion makes an argument for the essay's own relevance: we need to pay attention to the essay's points so that we can achieve a rich understanding of the movie. The piece's final sentence makes a chilling final impression by alluding to the danger that might loom if we do not understand the movie. This is the only the place in the piece where the author explicitly references how badly we might be hurt by ignorance, and it's all the more powerful for this solitary quality. A pithy, charming note follows, acknowledging that the author's work was informed by others' input (as most good writing is). Beautifully done. ]

Ripley Ending Explained, What Happens to Tom Ripley? - Netflix Tudum

Tom Ripley is a master of reinvention, but his considerable skills can only take him so far. At the end of Ripley , the walls are closing in on Andrew Scott’s dapper con artist, and Italian police are desperately tracking the man they suspect of murdering two people — Freddie Miles (Eliot Sumner) and Ripley himself. This gives Ripley, who’s been posing as Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn), the perfect escape hatch. Because it’s Dickie the police suspect of murder — and Dickie whose identity (and bank account) Ripley has been using — Ripley can return to a safe harbor: his own name and passport. 

“People have a lot of preconceptions about Tom Ripley,” Scott told Netflix of the infamous antihero created by Patricia Highsmith in her 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley . “So it’s my job, I suppose in some ways, to ignore all that and try to create our own particular version of it.” It’s a job similar to Tom Ripley’s, piecing together an identity from the fragments he steals along the way. What happens to Dickie Greenleaf?

Tom heads to Italy at the behest of Dickie’s father (Kenneth Lonergan), who hires him to convince Dickie to come home from his extended Italian vacation. Tom doesn’t have much luck; the American expat is perfectly happy painting away in the village of Atrani, where he lives with his writer girlfriend, Marge Sherwood (Dakota Fanning). But Tom finds his way into Dickie’s good graces in an uncharacteristic manner: He tells the truth, throwing Dickie’s father under the bus and admitting what he’s been paid to do.

For Dickie, that’s enough to accept Tom into his inner circle. “[Dickie]’s hiding out in Italy, he’s doing a kind of Hemingway or a Gertrude Stein or whatever and trying to re-create himself as a bohemian artist out there,” Flynn tells Tudum. “He’s embarrassed about what he is, which is nouveau riche.” So the idea of befriending his father’s employee and putting one over on his old man is a laugh for Dickie — until Tom gets a little too invested in the relationship. 

“I think he loves Dickie,” Scott said. But “it’s not really specified as to what the nature of that love necessarily is from Tom’s point of view.” Scott relished the undefined nature of the relationship. “I think it’s very important with Tom to understand that he’s not somebody who can be labeled,” he said. “I think that’s very important that we don’t find a little box to put him in.”

For Flynn, Tom’s feelings were clearer. “Tom comes in and has these ideas about the depth of their friendship versus the connection that Dickie and Marge have,” Flynn says. “He wants something more. He wants to be him, and he doesn’t know what to do with that.” 

When Dickie catches Tom wearing his clothes, the blush starts to come off of the pair’s relationship. Soon Tom has been disinvited from Marge and Dickie’s Christmas plans and not so subtly pushed out of their lives. A final getaway to Sanremo ends in heartbreak and blood, as Tom bludgeons Dickie to death on a boat ride and unceremoniously buries him at sea. Whatever they were to each other — friends, roommates, something more — it’s over. 

Does Tom Ripley get away with murder?

By the time the credits roll on Episode 8 (“Narcissus”), Tom has racked up a body count of two: Dickie and Freddie Miles, a friend of Dickie’s who got a little too suspicious of Tom. That’s on top of the many financial crimes (cashing Dickie’s checks, selling his property, running small-scale scams back in New York) and moral trespasses (breaking Marge’s heart, lying constantly) that Tom commits. But, having adopted Dickie’s identity after their ill-fated boat ride, Tom is pursued by the Italian police for the one crime he didn’t commit — his own murder. So he goes back to basics, moving to Venice from Rome and flipping back to using his real passport and name. 

“[Tom]’s a con man and he’s a liar, and he’s clever and he’s a criminal,” Ripley creator and writer-director Steven Zaillian tells Tudum. “But I also feel that we relate to him because a lot of his traits are traits that we have. He has aspirations, he feels envy, he has pride, he desires things.” The last thing the ever-evolving Tom wants is to be himself, but creating a wealthy new version of himself in Italy isn’t too bad. 

In Venice, Tom turns himself in to the police, feigning surprise at the idea that he’s a person of interest in a murder case. When Inspector Ravini (Maurizio Lombardi) arrives, Tom throws on a wig and fake beard and carefully arranges the lighting in his apartment to deceive the inspector. With the authorities convinced that Tom is alive, he then convinces Dickie’s father and Marge that Dickie killed himself, leaving Tom home free in Italy. 

Well, mostly. In a final button, the series returns to Inspector Ravini’s office, where he receives a copy of Marge’s new book, My Atrani . Upon examining the dedication to Dickie, Ravini discovers an unsettling surprise: The photo of Dickie in the book is obviously not the Dickie he interrogated on multiple occasions. 

“I kind of fell in love with this inspector as I was writing it,” says Zaillian. “And when we were shooting it, I think Maurizio was so great [that] I felt, ‘Oh, it’d be really nice to just have one final moment with him and his involvement with Tom.’ ” 

So Tom lives to con another day — but he’ll always have to keep looking over his shoulder.

What happens between Marge and Tom?

When they meet in Atrani, Marge is suspicious of Tom. She first thinks he’s taking advantage of Dickie and his father, and then she assumes his relationship with Dickie is even more sordid than that. But when Dickie goes missing, things change. She takes the rejection letter from “Dickie” at face value and believes Tom as he begins to spin the tale of Dickie’s tragic suicide. She even flirts with using the press’s excitement around Dickie’s disappearance to sell her book. 

“I think we see her evolve to some form of acceptance and then slight opportunism,” Fanning tells Tudum. “ ‘If this is happening, and if this is what I’m being told is the truth and reality, then I guess I’m going to use it somehow to benefit me.’ I think that’s a Tom Ripley character trait that we sort of see budding and growing a little bit in Marge.” 

Naturally, that puts Marge at odds with Tom. “They see something in each other,” Fanning continues. “Tom’s disgusted by Marge’s version of it, and Marge is disgusted by Tom’s version of it, but there’s something similar there.” Similarities aside, their relationship comes to a head when Tom considers pushing her into a Venice canal after spending an exhausting day with her. In the end, he decides not to, and the pair go their separate ways, free to live off — and perhaps profit from — the memory of Dickie in whatever way they see fit.

What’s the Caravaggio connection in Ripley ?

Art is omnipresent in Ripley — without even mentioning Dickie Greenleaf’s paintings, which Flynn describes as “really objectively bad.” The finale kicks off with a cold open both surprising and familiar to Ripley viewers: a Roman avenue and a dead body. The only catch? This murder took place more than 300 years before Tom Ripley hid Freddie Miles’ body on the Appian Way. Back then, the Roman police immediately fingered painter Caravaggio as the murderer, and we see Caravaggio seated with a glass of wine — before a hard match cut to Tom drives home the parallels between the two men. 

“I started out by writing [Tom’s] interest in the beauty of the paintings, of the art, and then knowing that at a certain point, I would get into the story of Caravaggio,” Zaillian says, “because Caravaggio is another man who lived in Rome who murdered somebody and then was on the run for it for the rest of his life. That little parallel I thought was interesting.” 

In the final moments of Ripley , the series flashes back again to Caravaggio, as Tom sits with his own glass of wine and admires a new Picasso hanging in his Venice apartment. (Highsmith readers will note that Tom later pursues a career in art forgery.) “I took a long time choosing what Picasso we were going to use,” Zaillian says. “I knew that I wanted a cubist painting and that cubism is all about deconstructing usually a human figure into parts so that we can somehow see them more clearly.” 

This is, in essence, another way of describing Tom. “I felt like at the end to see these pieces of Tom and these different personas of Tom and these different identities that he assumed and these things he forged that we were actually seeing him fragmented, like the cubist painting that’s right in front of him,” Zaillian adds. Who does John Malkovich play in Ripley ?

Oscar nominee John Malkovich makes a brief but crucial appearance in the last episode of Ripley , playing Reeves Minot, a fellow raconteur who shares Tom’s taste for wine and good company (and crime). “I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun if John Malkovich would do this little part?’ ” Zaillian recalls. In an amusing twist, Malkovich played Ripley in the 2002 film Ripley’s Game (adapted from one of Zaillian’s favorite Highsmith novels). “The character doesn’t appear until the second Ripley book, but I thought it would be interesting to meet him in this first story and was delighted when John said yes,” Zaillian told Netflix. 

As for those later novels: Like its source material, Ripley ends on a concise note, with Tom taking on the new identity of Timothy Fanshaw. But given the opportunity, Zaillian would love to continue to adapt the affectionately nicknamed “Ripliad.” “I think that the other books are good, and we see Tom in a lot of different ways as he grows up,” Zaillian says. 

For Scott, those many different aspects of Ripley are the thrust of the series. “It’s about how any human being has both ends — you can do terrible things and want to do good things,” Scott said. “I think that’s why Tom Ripley is so fascinating. I love Tom.” Don’t we all.

The trailer for “Abigail” tells you almost everything you need to know about the movie, a wacky high-concept horror thriller about a group of kidnappers who bite off more than they can chew when they unwittingly abduct a child-sized vampire ballerina. The vamp, played with some relish by Alisha Weir , only really comes alive when she’s leering at or stalking her prey. Genre fans will also spot some familiar faces among the movie’s ensemble cast, all of whom do their best with this tic-y, schtick-y material. They curse (enough to seem like they’re overcompensating for some things); they run (around each other, mostly); they get picked off one by one. 

You already know what you’re in for if you’ve come to “Abigail” to watch a body count caper featuring plummy character actor performances from That Guys like Kevin Durand and Dan Stevens . Most of their co-stars keep up in less attractive roles, including Melissa Barrera ’s thinly drawn anti-heroine team leader. There’s also plenty of viscous-looking blood splatter and some modestly good-looking vampire makeup—the fangs, in particular. Some action scenes are well-choreographed, but generally over-edited and shot just ahead of whatever’s moving on-screen. The rest of this 90-minute genre exercise is unfailingly conventional, though that’s also a big part of its ostensible appeal.

I can’t really get or stay mad at “Abigail” for essentially delivering what its marketing promises. Sure, the movie’s creators, led by co-helmers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (better known as “ Radio Silence ,” directors of “ Ready or Not ” and the 2022 “Scream” reboot), could have delivered more, even though disenchanted viewers can’t exactly claim false advertising. The setup is strictly by the numbers and the characters are all stock types.

A team of bickering misfits kidnaps the title character (Weir). They follow her home with a comically oversized gizmo stuck to the bottom of her chauffeur’s car. Then they bring the 12-year-old-looking girl to a secluded mansion, where they’re reminded of their mission’s stakes. Shady but well-dressed ring-leader Lambert ( Giancarlo Esposito ) gives us and them the rundown: no real names, no cell phones, nothing personal—it’s 24 hours of baby-sitting a pre-teen who really likes to plié and step-toe her way through “Swan Lake” rehearsals. Simple is as simple does.

We learn very little about everyone, thanks in no small part to a scene where Lambert nicknames the characters after members of the Rat Pack. Durand’s character, a jolly-but-dim muscle-bro named Peter, tries to find the sense in being nicknamed after rats. Later, he gets that it’s a disposable pop culture reference and promptly moves on.

Peter’s the most sympathetic character in “Abigail,” partly because he’s constantly straining against the limits of what his character can know and do. He’s joined by a call sheet of tropes, including Abigail’s minder, the empathetic and observant Joey (Melissa Barrera); their irritating and wasted driver Dean (the late “ Euphoria ” star Angus Cloud ); and the strong-silent ex-soldier Rickles ( William Catlett ). Eventually, the team has to worry not only about Abigail, but a few predictable liabilities, like their bratty and easily bored electronics hacker Sammy ( Kathryn Newton ) and their foul-mouthed, inexplicably accented ex-cop backup leader Frank (Stevens).

None of these party game-light character traits really matter once Abigail gets loose from her handcuffs. The house that Abigail’s prey stay in has more personality, but it’s basically the house from “ Clue ” with some extra goth-y touch-ups. Maybe that’s all you need to enjoy watching a game cast check off every box as they struggle to figure out how to stop a “real” vampire. Nothing worth writing home about comes to mind.

It’s hard to get too excited watching so many talented actors try and barely succeed in making you want to care about their characters, especially since that isn’t the same thing as making you care. More could have been done with less tedious dialogue, as what's here is designed mostly just to hold the hands of viewers as the plot skips from beat to beat. More could have also been done with Joey, who, at one point, stuffs a loaded gun into her tight jeans’ waistband. I do and I don’t believe it.

“Abigail” may find its audience given a lucky combination of good timing and wishful thinking. It’s not badly made, just uninspired and played out. If you like B-movies made with a budget and are specifically looking for an undemanding time, “Abigail” might be for you. “Abigail” might also disappoint you, especially if you’re hoping for more than what’s advertised.

‘Fallout’ Finds the Fun in an Apocalyptic Hellscape

TV’s latest big-ticket video game adaptation, from the creators of “Westworld,” takes a satirical, self-aware approach to the End Times.

The scream was just right — bloodcurdling, if also very funny — and the practical effects crew had finally found the proper volume and trajectory of the water cannon. The idea was to film what might happen if you ripped a man from the throat of a mutant salamander, exploding its guts like a giant water balloon.

All that remained was to decide what color of bile to slather on the actor (Johnny Pemberton) and on the salamander’s many teeth, which nuclear radiation had transformed into rows of humanlike fingers.

Based on observations made during a visit to the Brooklyn set of “Fallout” in early 2023, Amazon had spared no expense to make the show, the latest genre-bending series from Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the creators of “Westworld.” So it was no surprise when Nolan, on set to direct that chilly afternoon, was presented with not one but some half-dozen buckets of bile to choose from, in a variety of revolting hues. He settled on a pukey pinkish yellow.

“This is the closest thing to comedy that I’ve worked on,” he said later by phone. With writing credits on films like “Memento,” “The Dark Knight” and “The Prestige,” Nolan has tended to skew dark. Comically exploding monster guts — this was new territory.

“It’s a lot of fun,” he said.

A fun apocalypse? Amid all the doom and gloom of most sci-fi spectacles and social media feeds? Yes, please.

“Fallout” premieres Wednesday on Prime Video, and at first it may sound familiar to viewers of a certain postapocalyptic HBO hit from last year, “The Last of Us.” Imagine: a sprawling, expensive adaptation of a beloved videogame franchise that features an unlikely duo — a nihilistic old gunslinger with a tortured past and a tough young woman whose mission overlaps with his. Together, they travel a lawless America plagued by criminals, fanatics, killer mutants and trigger-happy survivors.

But where “The Last of Us” had a decidedly serious and heartfelt tone, “Fallout,” in keeping with its source material, is satirical and self-aware, rich with ironic detail. Sets and costumes lovingly blend B-movie conventions from multiple genres, including westerns, horror and Atomic Age sci-fi. The violence is comically over-the-top.

That unlikely duo? The man (Walton Goggins) is a disfigured former western star who, among other things, puts the woman (Ella Purnell) on a leash and tries to hawk her organs. Their overlapping mission? To find a severed head.

“I am still wrapping my head around it to be quite honest with you,” Goggins said during a brief production break on set. He was dressed in the kind of immaculate Hollywood cowboy duds — think golden fringe and a tidy matching neckerchief — that a real cowboy might spit a beer on.

“It’s ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ meets. …” He paused, searched for the perfect comparison. “It’s ‘Strangelove’ meets the ‘Star Wars’ bar.”

Until recently, live-action video game adaptations were mostly a losing proposition for television. “The Last of Us” by most accounts broke the streak . A commercial and critical darling, it earned eight Primetime Emmys in January, and its 24 total nominations included one for best drama.

Such success seemed remote five years ago, when Nolan had his first conversations with Bethesda Game Studios, the company that owns the Fallout franchise. An avid gamer, Nolan had long been a fan. The original game, which debuted in 1997, established the premise: In an alternative America, the postwar optimism and kitschy aesthetics of the Eisenhower Era never ended, only evolved. There was no Vietnam, no Watergate, no Clinton-Lewinsky scandal. Then in 2077, a nuclear war between the United States and China wiped out modern civilization worldwide.

Those who could afford it retreated into vast underground networks of shelters, known as vaults, until it was safe to come out. The game begins in 2161 when a “vault-dweller,” who has never known anything but the Beaver Cleaver-ish culture preserved underground, ventures into the irradiated wastelands around Los Angeles on a vital mission. (Later games travel to other cities and times.)

Several Fallout adaptations had been aborted or turned down over the years, said Todd Howard, Bethesda’s executive producer, who is also an executive producer of the show. After seeing and loving “Westworld,” however, Howard approached Nolan and Joy. He had heard Nolan was a gamer.

“He had clearly played a lot,” Howard said — Fallout 3 especially. “He could speak to it with authenticity and had a view of what made it tick.” (“Fallout 3 was a game that you could play comfortably for 50 to 100 hours,” Nolan said.)

Bethesda’s priorities were twofold: A TV series had to stay true to the lore of the games but also be written like a whole new chapter, same as any game sequel.

“It was very important to us not to have a show that translated one particular game story but that told something original,” Howard said. “The main character in the Fallout series is the world of Fallout.”

Amazon signed on to produce in 2020, part of an overall deal with Nolan and Joy’s production company, Kilter Films. To begin building the Fallout world, Kilter brought in two creator-showrunners: One, Geneva Robertson-Dworet, had written scripts for big adaptations before, including “Tomb Raider” (2018) and “Captain Marvel” (2019); the other, Graham Wagner, was a TV comedy writer, with credits on “Baskets,” “Silicon Valley” and 50 episodes of “Portlandia.”

For them it was a “best of both worlds” situation. They had been given a trove of intellectual property to start with, already popular among millions. But they also had freedom to simply craft a good story without worrying so much about satisfying gamer fan police.

“The fans of the games want to hear us say that we take the I.P. seriously,” Wagner said in a joint interview with Robertson-Dworet. “Of course we do, because we like it. But you don’t want to let that burden make it feel like a job. Because then everyone’s watching you do a job, and then it just feels like work.”

Robertson-Dworet later added, laughing: “We talk a lot about the [expletive] we’re going to eat for the show. It’s going to be either too woke, too fascist, not fascist enough. … ” She trailed off. The possibilities were endless.

In a separate video call, Kyle MacLachlan, who plays a guest role in the show, didn’t seem worried. And he knows something about protective fan bases. (See: David Lynch’s “Dune.” Or David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks: The Return.”)

“I think it’s evident, when you look at the sets and the production value and the tone of the show, that they’re making a big effort to try to incorporate the reality of that world,” he said. “It’s a perfect place to put a story.”

For all the new material, fans of the game will find plenty that is familiar about the story. The show’s other male lead, Aaron Moten, plays an initiate of the Brotherhood of Steel, a fanatical warrior faction found in all of the games. (They suit up in Iron Man-like robotic armor that, 219 years after the end of modern civilization, is prone to breaking down.) Though Purnell’s character arrives over 130 years after the events of the first game, she draws heavily from it.

“She goes up to the wasteland, and she finds out that everything she ever believed is a lie,” Purnell said on a video call with Moten. “It makes her start to question everything,” she added. “And she has to make that choice, right? Adapt or die. Who’s she going to be?”

However fans respond to “Fallout,” no one can doubt the creators’ commitment. Back in Brooklyn in early 2023, a set tour with the show’s production designer, Howard Cummings, offered a glimpse of the massive scope. Indoors, a mazelike series of corridors and chambers amounted to a multilevel reproduction of the vaults. Outdoors, a ramshackle junk city included whole buses and the front end of a 747 jet, trucked in from California. The New York production alone had 35 welders working at once, Cummings said.

This was to say nothing of the location shoots in the Utah desert, or on the Skeleton Coast in Namibia , a stand-in for a postapocalyptic Pacific Palisades, all shot on widescreen film instead of digital. (“The power of dragging yourself to a beautiful and remote place to capture that beauty on film, it still works,” Nolan said. “It always works.”) Or of the 360-degree virtual soundstage, made up of thousands of LED tiles — for when you need the location to come to you.

“New York didn’t have one,” Cummings said. “But it does now!”

Unsurprisingly, “Fallout” looks great. Still, all the money in Amazon’s coffers can’t make a show good, and the streamer, which declined to share budget numbers, has reportedly spent hundreds of millions of dollars on large-scale series, like “Citadel” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” that have yet to make much of an impact with viewers or critics. Amid the glut of heavier end-times material out there, it seemed like a refreshing start, at least, that the “Fallout” creators’ goal was to entertain viewers, not pile onto them.

Nolan called making it an “expiating” experience: Coming out of a pandemic, amid global instability and a deterioration of political discourse, you had to laugh sometimes, he said.

“It’s the only way to make it through.”

How to Date Billy Walsh review – another offensively boring streaming-service mess

Even with floor-level expectations, this romcom is incoherent and grating, mistaking teen camp for charm

A t this point, I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve had to start a review by suggesting the streaming business has lowered our standards. The expectation, now, is cheap-looking, derivative and disposable – and the aim is purely consumable. At best, these B-tier streaming movies are fun, kicky, or knowingly smooth-brain. At worst, they’re offensive to your time.

How to Date Billy Walsh, a new teen movie from Prime Video, falls on the latter end of that spectrum. The England-set romcom from veteran TV director Alex Pillai, whose credits include Riverdale, Bridgerton and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, commits the cardinal sin in this content glut: it is boring, and its glaring flaws – from tone to shot choice to premise – only serve to underscore its failings, and not in a fun, Madame Web way. Even with diminished expectations, it grates.

Most of its issues boil down to a fundamental lack of charm, despite its strenuous efforts to force it through fourth-wall breaks by protagonist Archie (Heartstopper’s Sebastian Croft), who suffers from lifelong cowardice to tell Amelia (Bridgerton’s Charithra Chandran ), his best friend since birth, that he loves her. The script, by Alexander J Farrell and Greer Ellison (Hope Street, Butterfly Kisses), tries to be punchy with this material, peppering their friendship with bonding over farts, sex toys and a joke about his dick size, that come off, well, limply. Because movie logic, he’s rich and lives in what appears to be an amateur planetarium, she lost her mom to cancer, and both are losers at a school populated by the most thinly-drawn side characters possible – blond mean girl with eyebrows (Daisy Jelley), flamboyant gay boy with phone (Nael Ameen), a foul-mouthed headteacher (Guz Khan), and Archie’s loyal driver William (Nick Frost).

The film opens with a dirt-smudged, partially shaven-headed Archie hijacking Heathbrook Academy’s summer ball for a grand speech; it then flashes back to his plan, at the beginning of term, to tell Amelia he loves her while they watch their favourite classic horror film (they’re quirky!). Said plan is thwarted by the arrival of a handsome, motorcycle-riding, attention-grabbing American transfer student named Billy Walsh (Cobra Kai’s Tanner Buchanan). The title is a bit of a misnomer, as the film is barely concerned with Walsh (a mostly vacant nice guy with a winsome smile) nor the hijinks required for Amelia to get his attention. It’s more preoccupied with Archie’s state of mind as he scrambles to keep Amelia close and sabotage her puppy-eyed interest in Billy through increasingly indefensible means. Namely, by pretending to be an 80-year-old “love doctor” whom Amelia calls for (very bad) advice. (She got the idea from Archie’s bitter turned horny parents, if you can believe.)

This contrivance, via an AI digital-ageing app rendered in cheap sci-fi aesthetics, lands Archie in Dear Evan Hansen territory of objectionability and makes for unfavourable comparison to the amateur teen sex therapist in Netflix’s far superior Sex Education, also set in an English school milieu. It’s also a disservice to Chandran, who initially plays Amelia as smart and grounded, with the character saddled with sense-defying and humiliating behaviour and beholden to the needs of plot.

This summary makes the film sound more coherent than it is, as there is little rhythm to the scenes, the characters’ emotional logic or the tone, which shoots for heightened teen camp – mean girls throwing insults and milkshakes, choreographed group dances at the ball, a chorus of extremely cheap-looking “OMG” and laughing emojis on the screen – and lands somewhere between sincere, arch and comical, with the seamlessness of sandpaper. It’s a weird facsimile of a movie – plot with no momentum, plenty of character facts without substance, a pastiche of better movie moments and classic romcom notes. Even for lowered expectations or couch-day fluff, this is a skip.

Is it safe to look at a total solar eclipse? What to know about glasses, proper viewing

If you have your eyewear to take in monday's eclipse, here are some last-minute things to consider to ensure you're good to go..

The much-anticipated solar eclipse will finally enshroud thousands of miles of North America today in its long, narrow shadow. By now, those who plan to witness it should have their plans in place .

Travel has been completed. Schedules have been coordinated around the anticipated moment of totality. And proper eyewear is, of course, in your possession. Right?

We at USA TODAY have published no shortage of articles guiding you away from scam eclipse glasses and to the safest, most reliable options – some of which were even free. But if you need a last-minute refresher – or a crash course to catch you up on a topic you entirely missed – we're happy to oblige.

If you don't have your eclipse glasses by now, it may be too late. But some vendors, including Warby Parker , and even public libraries, have offered eclipse glasses giveaways , so be sure to check your local area before the historic event rolls into town.

And if you do have your eyewear to take in Monday's eclipse – the last one of these incredible astronomical events in North America for 20 years – here are some last-minute things to consider to ensure you're in good shape.

Can you go blind by looking at the solar eclipse?

Staring at the sun is  unlikely to completely blind you , but its powerful rays can still burn and  damage your retinas if you don't take proper safety precautions to view  solar eclipses .

That's why eyewear is recommended if you plan to look up at the sun Monday to witness the solar eclipse, which most of the country will be able to experience in some way.

In the face of the sun's powerful rays, regular sunglasses made of cheap plastic and polycarbonate material just aren't going to cut it. Astronomers and other experts instead emphasize that skygazers intent on viewing the upcoming total solar eclipse do so with  specialized eyewear  crafted to  protect their sensitive retinas  from permanent damage.

Even viewing any part of the bright sun through camera lenses, binoculars and telescopes without a specialized solar filter  could instantly cause severe eye injury , according to the American Astronomical Society.

Often made with a polyester film coated in aluminum, the glasses are highly specialized . Compared to regular sunglasses, proper eclipse glasses are 100,000 times darker to block nearly all visible, infrared and ultraviolet light and protect our sensitive retinas when looking skyward.

As another point of safety, don't look up while driving , please.

How to know when it's safe to view the eclipse without glasses

A  total solar eclipse  offers the unique opportunity for skygazers to  witness the spectacular astral display  with the naked eye – but only when the time is right.

Hundreds of cities in  13 states are along the path of totality  for the eclipse, which will move across North America from southwest to northeast . When the moon moves completely in front of the sun and blocks its light for a brief period of time, you'll know it's safe to fully take in the dazzling display.

That moment is what is called "totality," whereby uncharacteristic darkness falls and all but the sun's outermost layer known as its corona makes a rare appearance to us here on Earth,  according to NASA .

How to make sure your eclipse glasses aren't fake

In the rush to acquire  some coveted eclipse glasses  before April 8 , you may have inadvertently fallen victim to the  fakes and imitators proliferating online retailers .

While plenty of legitimate certified eyewear was widely available – and may still be – less-scrupulous manufacturers try all sorts of methods and tricks to get your attention and make you believe the product you're about to buy is the real deal.

For instance, many vendors began making the grand (and entirely made-up) claim that their products are endorsed by NASA.

As the space agency  reiterated to USA TODAY , NASA highly recommended that skygazers get a pair of certified eclipse glasses before the total solar eclipse  charts a 115-mile-wide path of totality  blanketing much of North America in  uncharacteristic darkness . But it does not approve  any particular brand of solar viewers, despite what many vendors may claim.

The responsibility of guiding American consumers to the safest eclipse glasses is largely left to the American Astronomical Society.

The organization maintains  a curated list of approved vendors  of solar eclipse glasses that it updated to give priority to North American manufacturers ahead of the total solar eclipse. Products you purchase that are listed on that site are guaranteed to be  in compliance with  the highest international safety standards.

Those standards are set by the International Organization for Standardization, which only vouches for solar eclipse glasses that are dark and strong enough to filter out a certain amount of the sun's harmful light.

The astronomical society also provides some  helpful tips  for how to spot counterfeit glasses.

No eclipse glasses? Welding lenses, pinhole projectors among alternative viewers

While certified solar eclipse glasses are the preferred method for viewing the eclipse, alternative methods do exist that don't necessarily sacrifice one's safety.

Many people, particularly blue-collar workers, may be tempted to turn to those welding lenses they have sitting in their workshop.

But beware: The most common welding goggles and helmets aren't typically strong enough to adequately withstand the sun's powerful rays and protect your vulnerable eyes.

Any welding lenses weaker than a Shade 12 filter – a number that indicates the level of protection offered – just aren't going to cut it when it comes to gazing upward in anticipation of the moon blocking all but the sun's outermost layer.

It's also not too late to buy some welding lenses, which Tractor Supply is promoting for sale at its 282 stores along the path of totality as a viable option for viewing the eclipse.

Another simple method is to create your own pinhole projector to project the sun onto a nearby surface. The American Astronomical Society offers helpful  instructions  to set them up.

And one final note: As you make your eclipse-viewing plans,  these interactive maps  should help you chart the time and duration for when totality would occur in cities along the path.

Replay: 2024 solar eclipse in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, highlights from historic celestial event

A total solar eclipse darkened the skies Monday across the continent.

Milwaukee was not on the path of totality , but experienced about 90% coverage. The eclipse was expected to peak about 2:08:10 p.m. in Milwaukee. It began at 12:53:00 p.m., and it reached 50% of the maximum coverage at 1:33:50 p.m. After peaking at 2:08:10 p.m., 50% of the maximum coverage was again visible at 2:42:20 p.m. The eclipse ended in Milwaukee at 3:21:50 p.m.

If you lived in the southeastern parts of the state — including Milwaukee, Racine, Kenosha, Lake Geneva and Janesville — you had the best chance out of anywhere in Wisconsin at seeing the partial solar eclipse . Much of the state was expected to have cloud cover that could obscure it.

2 p.m. - Students and community members watch the eclipse's peak from UWM bridge

Students, faculty and members of the community gathered on the bridge leading into the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Student Union to watch the eclipse's peak at 2:08 p.m.

Some said the overcast skies at the eclipse's peak made the world look like an "Instagram filter." Other students admitted to skipping all or part of class to watch the event.

"It's pretty cool to see it. I've never seen an eclipse before, at least not to this totality," said Reyna Delikat, a junior at UWM who gathered at the bridge with three friends.

Delikat said she and her friends waited in a long line to receive free eclipse glasses at the union. Other students said the glasses ran out by the time they got to the union and were sharing them amongst each other to catch glimpses of the sun.

12:50 p.m. - Eclipse-watchers gather outside Milwaukee Public Museum

A crowd of about 100 people, including children and adults of all ages, gathered outside the Milwaukee Public Museum to watch the partial eclipse. Museum educators helped attendees use telescopes as the eclipse approached its peak. Inside the museum, visitors could explore models of the sun and planets.

Planetarium educator Marshall Ward projected the eclipse onto a piece of poster board so those without eclipse glasses or a telescope could see the moon's shadow covering the sun. Despite earlier worries of cloudy weather making it difficult to view the eclipse, the sky was completely clear.

"It's just a gorgeous day out," said Dane of Milwaukee, who attended the museum event with their boyfriend, Davis. "I was worried yesterday that the rain was going to block everything."

"But we got lucky," Davis added.

Ken Knobel of San Francisco traveled to Wisconsin to visit his son at UW-Madison over the weekend and decided to watch the eclipse from Milwaukee because of the clear skies.

"I think the most exciting part of it is that it's, for some people, once in a lifetime," said Knobel, who said it's the first eclipse he's ever watched.

12:26 p.m. - How long will the eclipse last in Wisconsin?

For much of Wisconsin, the solar eclipse will start just after 12:50 p.m. and end after 3:20 p.m. The peak, though, is the time that is most important. That will take place between 2:05 and 2:10 p.m.

In Milwaukee, the partial solar eclipse will take place for 2 hours 29 minutes, beginning at 12:52 p.m. and ending at 3:21 p.m.

At its peak, 89.6% of the sun will be obscured by the moon in Milwaukee. That will happen at 2:08 p.m.

10:45 a.m. - How do I know my eclipse glasses are legitimate?

Making sure your eclipse glasses are legitimate is important because staring directly at the sun, even for a short time, can cause permanent damage to your retinas, a light-sensitive part of the eye that transmits what you see to your brain.

Here's what to look for to make sure your glasses are legit:

• Your eclipse glasses should be marked with the ISO certification number ISO 12312-2 on the glasses' frame and registered as a 'Solar Viewer Brand' with the American Astronomical Society (AAS).
• Objects should be hardly visible when you're wearing legitimate glasses indoors, the AAS says, and outdoors, objects except the sun's reflection on shiny surfaces should still be hard to see.
• Check the filters on the glasses for scratches and tears. The frame shouldn't be loose in any way. If there are any damages, replace them with a new, certified pair.

10:33 a.m. - Should I be worried about my pets' eyes during the solar eclipse?

You don't need to worry about your pets during an eclipse since they don't normally look up at the sky and have an aversion to bright light, experts say.

If you are bringing your pet to a local eclipse viewing event, you don't need to get them eclipse glasses because there's no fear of animals hurting themselves by looking at the blocked sun. Any type of eye covering is more likely to bother them than anything, according to experts.

Moreover, you should not force your pet to look at the eclipse.

10:10 a.m. - How to take a photo of the eclipse with your phone

You can capture Monday's solar eclipse in Wisconsin with your cellphone, according to NASA .

You'll need to use a solar filter to protect your camera, and you'll also need a pair of solar viewing glasses to protect your eyes.

9:30 a.m. - Where to find eclipse glasses in and around Milwaukee, free solar eclipse glasses

Eclipse glasses are available for free, while supplies last, at Warby Parker. There are two Warby Parker locations in Wisconsin , in Milwaukee's Third Ward and blocks from the state capitol building in Madison.

Glasses will also be given out at some local events. You can find a list of viewing events here . Glasses will also be sold in some stores, such as American Science and Surplus, 6921 W. Oklahoma Ave., Milwaukee. Eclipse glasses are available for purchase while supplies last.

If you can't get your hands on some glasses, you can try your hand at crafting a DIY pair. Eclipse viewers can be made out of common household items such as cereal boxes, colanders, and cardboard or paper tubes. Tutorials on how to make your own glasses are available here .

8:45 a.m. - Eclipse forecast shows clear skies in Milwaukee, clouds likely in western Wisconsin

Despite some worries last week that cloud cover might make the partial eclipse difficult, if not impossible, to see from Milwaukee, the National Weather Service said Monday morning that the forecast looks promising for viewing the astronomical event from our area.

"As we've gotten closer to today ... the skies have become more clear," said local NWS meteorologist Mark Gehring.

The Milwaukee area is expected to see clear skies this morning and potentially a few light clouds in the afternoon. The day is expected to be sunny, with a high of 63 degrees.

Other areas of the state might not have as much luck viewing the eclipse. A low-pressure system currently casting clouds over Iowa could make eclipse-viewing difficult from west-central Wisconsin, Gehring said. Clouds are also in the forecast for northern Wisconsin and much of Minnesota.

La Crosse is currently experiencing partly cloudy conditions, Gehring said. It's possible these don't clear in time for eclipse-viewing from the La Crosse and Eau Claire areas, but the "heating of the day" could sufficiently break up the clouds.

What time is the solar eclipse in Madison, Janesville and other southern Wisconsin cities?

As the eclipse travels along its southwest-to-northeast path across the country, cities in western Wisconsin will see it slightly before the Milwaukee area. However, cities in southeastern Wisconsin are closer to the path of totality than those in the west and will perhaps see more noticeable overcast skies during the partial eclipse's peak.

Here's when the eclipse will peak in some of southern Wisconsin's major cities:

• Platteville: The partial solar eclipse will reach its peak at 2:04:30 p.m. in Platteville when the moon covers 86% of the sun. The city will experience the eclipse from 12:49:20 p.m. to 3:18:30 p.m. Residents can see the eclipse at 50% of its peak coverage at 1:29:20 p.m. and again at 2:39:30 p.m.
• Richland Center: The eclipse will reach its  peak at 2:05:10 p.m. , and the moon will cover 84% of the sun. Richland Center will experience the partial solar eclipse from 12:50:30 p.m. to 3:18:40 p.m. The eclipse will be at 50% of its peak coverage at 1:29:50 p.m. and again at 2:40:10 p.m.
• Madison: The eclipse will reach its  peak at 2:06:10 p.m.  when the moon covers 86% of the sun. The city will see the partial eclipse from 12:51:10 p.m. to 3:19:50 p.m. Madisonians can see the eclipse at 50% of its maximum coverage at 1:31:10 p.m. and 2:40:50 p.m.
• Janesville: The eclipse will  peak at 2:06:30 p.m. , and the moon will cover 88% of the sun. Janesville will experience the eclipse from 12:51:10 p.m. to 3:20:20 p.m. The eclipse will be at 50% of its peak coverage at 1:31:50 p.m. and again at 2:40:50 p.m.
• Waukesha: The eclipse will reach its  peak at 2:07:40 p.m.  when the moon covers 89% of the sun. Waukesha will see the partial solar eclipse from 12:52:30 p.m. to 3:21:20 p.m. Skywatchers can view the eclipse at 50% of its maximum coverage at 1:33:10 p.m. and again at 2:42:00 p.m.
• Kenosha: The eclipse will reach its  peak at 2:08:00 p.m. , and the moon will cover 91% of the sun. Kenosha will experience the eclipse from 12:52:30 p.m. to 3:21:50 p.m. Residents can see the eclipse at 50% of its maximum coverage at 1:33:40 p.m. and 2:41:50 p.m.

What will the weather be like in Wisconsin, Milwaukee for the total solar eclipse?

Much of the state is expected to have cloud cover that could obscure the eclipse, though when those clouds will move out and open up a view is still up in the air. The timing could become more certain by late Monday morning.

"It is going to be dicey as far as cloud cover goes," explained John Gagan from the National Weather Service in Milwaukee. "Milwaukee will kind of be in an area where they could see some clearing, but I don't know if we're going to see 100% clear skies."

Going north and west from Milwaukee, it's more likely that clouds will prevent seeing the eclipse. For example, Madison is right on the line. It's "entirely possible" that the skies could clear up in time, especially because the eclipse peaks around 2 p.m. there.

The same is true for northeastern Wisconsin. Appleton and Green Bay will start the day with "quite a bit of cloud cover," but skies will partially clear by the late morning or early afternoon, explained Scott Berschback from the National Weather Service in Green Bay.

When is the next total solar eclipse in Wisconsin after 2024?

After Monday, the lower 48 states won't see another total solar eclipse  until Aug. 23, 2044 . However, only three states ― Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota ― will be on its path of totality. According to NationalEclipse.com, most Western and Midwestern states, including Wisconsin, will see a partial eclipse during this event.

Thankfully, you won't have to wait another 20 years for the next total solar eclipse, though. Less than a year later  on Aug. 12, 2045 , another one will grace the skies. Its path of totality will touch South America, the Caribbean and 15 U.S. states from California to Georgia. Wisconsin and most of the Midwest will again see a partial eclipse.

The next time Wisconsin will be on the path of totality for a total solar eclipse will be  Sept. 14, 2099 , said Dr. Jean Creighton, director of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Manfred Olson Planetarium. Milwaukee and  much of the rest of the Midwest will be on the path, according to NASA.

Wisconsin was last on the path of totality 70 years ago. Northwestern portions of the state, including Spooner and St. Croix Falls,  experienced totality on June 30, 1954 . Meanwhile, Milwaukee hasn't seen totality since the Middle Ages, Creighton said. The city hasn't been on the path of a total solar eclipse  since May 16, 1379 .
