Malaysia is one of the most diverse countries on earth. You could spend months exploring the nation and still only scratch the surface. This South Asian country is split in two – one part on the Malay Peninsula and the other in Borneo. There are also more than 800 islands – some of which aren’t inhabited. Known for excellent food, a fascinating history, and some of the best wildlife watching in Asia – if it’s not on your bucket list, you’d better rethink!

With such a long coastline (as well as all those islands we mentioned), you’ll find some top tier beaches in Malaysia. Maybe you want to be surrounded by tropical rainforests and wake up to the sound of birds before your morning swim. Or you might fancy a party beach where you can down buckets and dance ’til the early hours. Perhaps you just need a day trip from Kuala Lumpur and George Town to escape the hustle and bustle. All of this is possible at these awesome beaches in Malaysia!

When to Go to Beaches in Malaysia

Because Malaysia is so spread out, it’s hard to nail down the best time to visit. It all depends on where you want to go in Malaysia . The country has two peak seasons – one between December and February, and the other from June to August (but sometimes as late as mid-September).

The dry season of December to February is the best time to visit islands on the west side of the country – such as Langkawi and Penang. However, the second high season in the northern hemisphere summer is better for the likes of Tioman Island and the Perhentians.

The good news is that temperatures stay roughly the same throughout the year – between 22 and 32 degrees Celsius. Rainfall is lowest in July and August. This only changes if you’re travelling into the hills. While it may not seem relevant when talking about the beaches in Malaysia, if you’re planning on spending time in Kota Kinabalu, it’s useful to know when to visit !

• Who It’s For:  Need an escape from the hustle and bustle of George Town? The white sands of Batu Ferringhi are ideal.
• Don’t Miss:  The nearby tropical spice garden. Wander around freely or take a tour.

Just outside of the second-largest city in Malaysia, George Town, Batu Ferringhi has a bit of everything. Popular with travellers and locals, it’s close enough to the big city to be convenient, but far enough to feel like a different world. It started as a water sports destination – and there are still loads on offer here. However, it has since built up into a popular weekend destination and is one of the top beaches in Malaysia. The well-developed infrastructure means you won’t have to go far to eat, drink, and shop.

With room for four guests, this apartment would suit a small family or group of friends. You can’t really get much closer to the beach, and you’ve got access to an outdoor pool and tennis court!

• Don’t Miss:  Enjoying the shade of a coconut tree after a refreshing dip in the water.

Pangkor Island has several beautiful beaches, so it’s a good idea to check more than just the epic Pasi Bogak. However, if you’ve only got time for one, this spot will take your breath away. It’s duty-free, so accommodation and shopping are cheaper, making it the ideal stop on your Malaysia backpacking itinerary . Plus, it’s just three hours from Kuala Lumpur. The blue waters are warm and largely pollution-free, making it one of the safest places to swim in Asia. Teluk Nipah and Coral Beach are harder to reach but also worth a trip on Pangkor.

Tioman Island is one of the best islands in Malaysia . It’s a nature preserve, meaning there’s little pollution. That’s what makes it such an awesome place to scuba dive and snorkel in Malaysia! Extensive coral reefs are matched on land by the diverse jungles, which make for a great trek. Juara Beach is the only spot on the island that’s good for surfing, but there are several cafes and bars too! Be sure to visit Tioman Island between March and October. For the rest of the year, the monsoon season means there’s little point in seasonal hotels being open.

The paradise island of Redang Island is another of Malaysia’s jewels in the south of the Gulf of Thailand. Beaches here are crystal clear and boast white powdery sand, as well as a huge variety of marine life. There are several beaches on the island – Pasir Panjang is the best known, but Teluk Dalam is where you should go if you don’t want to be disturbed by hordes of tourists. The protected waters are perfect for seeing turtles!

1. Security Belt with Hidden Pocket :  I never hit the road without my security belt. This is a regular looking belt with a concealed pocket on the inside – you can hide up to twenty notes inside and wear it through airport scanners without it setting them off. This is hands down the best way to hide your cash.

 2. Travel Water Bottle: Always travel with a water bottle – it’ll save you money and reduce your plastic footprint on our planet. The Grayl geopress is a true behemoth amongst water bottles acting as a purifier AND temperature regulator – so you can enjoy a cold red bull, or a hot coffee, no matter where you are.

3. Microfibre Towel :  It’s always worth packing a proper towel. Hostel towels are scummy and take forever to dry. Microfibre towels dry quickly, are compact, lightweight and can be used as a blanket or yoga mat if need be.

4.  Headtorch : Every backpacker should have a head torch! A decent head torch could save your life. If you want to explore caves, unlit temples, or simply find your way to the bathroom during a blackout, a headtorch is a must. Currently, I’m using the Petzl Actik Core rechargeable headlamp – an awesome piece of kit! Because it’s USB chargeable I never have to buy earth polluting batteries.

5. Hammock :  Taking a tent and pad on a road trip are not always practical but hammocks are lightweight, cheap, strong, sexy, and allow you to pitch up for the night pretty much anywhere. Right now, I’m rocking an Eno parachute hammock – it’s light, colorful and tough.

6. Toiletry Bag : I always travel with a hanging toiletry bag as it’s a super efficient way to organise your bathroom stuff. Well worth having, whether you are hanging it from a tree whilst camping, or a hook in a wall, it helps to have quick access to all your stuff.

Now that you’ve seen the best beaches in Malaysia, you’re probably a bit more clued up on where to go. And you might have dropped a few more pins on your map! Remember, we’ve seen scuba diving and other water sports in Kota Kinabalu, the quiet seclusion of Redang Island, and the all-rounder that is Batu Ferringhi.

Blessed with 878 islands off its extensive coastline, Malaysia has a tropical getaway for every kind of sun seeker.

So whether you’re into water sports, a fan of observing marine life, or just looking for some downtime in the sunshine, there’s a patch of sand perfect for you. But with some 4809km (2989 miles) of coastline here, where to start? Right here. Read on for the nine best beaches in Malaysia.

Spot green sea turtles at Teluk Dalam Kecil beach on Redang Island

There isn’t a bad spot on Redang Island. Located in the protected Terengganu Marine Park, just off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia , this speck offers everything you could imagine in a tropical paradise: white sandy beaches, wildlife-rich jungle, and thriving coral reefs teeming with large napoleon wrasse, parrotfish, and unicornfish. Since the island is also home to the largest green turtle rookery in the region, encounters with these appealing aquatic reptiles are pretty much a given. 

Home to the exclusive Taaras Beach & Spa Resort , Teluk Dalam Kecil is the best beach on the island – a pristine paradise of cotton-soft sand, calm turquoise waters, and a curve of palm trees as a windbreak. But if you plan to enjoy the view underwater, Tanjung Tengah at Pasir Panjang Beach makes the best spot for snorkeling. It is also considerably livelier at night.

Head to Penarik Beach in Terengganu to Malaysia' undeveloped side

If anywhere captures the timeless charm of Peninsular Malaysia’s east coast, Penarik Beach in Terengganu does. Undisturbed by mass development, this spot offers travelers an idyllic stretch of golden sand backed by the swaying coconut trees and traditional wooden houses – plus a glimpse into the quiet life of the local fishing community. 

The most popular thing to do here is to enjoy the sea breeze with a serving or two of the freshly cooked celup tepung (seafood fritters) widely available along the beach. But don’t stop there: take the chance to also explore the nearby cultural attractions, including Terrapuri Heritage Village , a boutique resort that features restored centuries-old Terengganu Malay houses. Novice swimmers should beware that Penarik Beach has choppy waters and sudden drop-offs. 

Juara Beach on Tioman Island is the best spot for surfing

Off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia,  Tioman Island  offers white beaches, crystal-clear waters, excellent snorkeling and diving, and a wide range of accommodations. Surfers will also love the waves that break along its shores. 

On the island’s east coast, Juara Beach is beloved by beginner and seasoned surfers alike thanks to varying wave breaks. True beginners can also take surf lessons here. The best time to surf in Tioman is between November to March; a surf contest in January attracts surfboarders from across the world. Juara’s waters are also prime for stand-up paddleboarding.

Families should head to Rawa Island in Johor

Around a 30-minute boat ride from the port town of Mersing in southeast Malaysia and within the archipelago of the Sultan Iskandar Marine Park, Rawa Island is a postcard-perfect atoll ideal for families. It boasts two all-inclusive hotels –  Rawa Island Resort and Alang’s Rawa Resort  – located along the stretch of powdery sand beach.

Lankayan Island in Sabah has the best beaches for snorkeling

Lankayan Island’s main draw might be the regular sightings of the majestic (and harmless) whale sharks between April and May. The country comprises a grand total of 878 islands that make up the archipelago, and beautiful beaches in Malaysia are – not surprisingly – everywhere.

While some pristine beaches, like those on Langkawi and the Perhentian islands , are well-known and heavily trafficked by backpackers, others are still a well-kept secret. And they are just waiting to be found.

I’ve personally spent a lot of time traveling around Southeast Asia, and many of these stunning beaches in Malaysia are on my list of favorite places in the entire world.

One of the island’s two main beaches, Long Beach, is bustling with party-loving backpackers who flock here to enjoy the crystal clear water, perfect weather, and fun nightlife. I even rated it as one of the best places to party in Southeast Asia .

During my first visit to the Perhentian Islands, I, unfortunately, got terrible weather the entire time and didn’t fully understand how amazing the water is here. Lucky for me, I returned to this Perhentian Kecil Island beach and was rewarded with the most stunning turquoise waters I had seen in Southeast Asia.

Do yourself a favor, and make sure the Perhentian islands are on your Malaysia itinerary .

It’s probably my favorite Malaysian beach on the list, and I can’t wait to visit again sometime this year.

Nestled amongst towering palms and coconut trees, this once little-known-of island, and its stretch of a picture-perfect beach is finally getting its name out there. Native sea life, a ton of water sports, and a relaxed atmosphere await you.

When I was living in Kuala Lumpur , all of my expat friends told me about this amazing island just a short boat ride away from Marang, and I couldn’t wait to experience it for myself. They actually told me NOT to blog about it because they didn’t want it to become over-touristy.

Anyways, it’s one of the most beautiful and relaxing islands in Malaysia, and I think it is a must for anyone planning a solo trip to the country. While there’s not all that much on the island besides a few resorts and restaurants, it’s an island escape that you’ll certainly fall in love with.

The restaurant (the only one on the island) The restaurant has a not very extensive menu, but in general, the food is well prepared. The spa is highly recommended. Where : Tioman Island

Located on the west coast of Tioman Island (Pulau Tioman), Monkey Bay is so remote it can only be accessed by boat or via a jungle trail. It’s a small beach paradise inhabited by – you guessed it – lots of monkeys.

During my first trip to Langkawi, I actually spent several days “crashing” the resort and swimming in its amazing pool. It was such a highlight of my time on the island, and it’s a well-deserved spot on any list of Malaysian beach resorts. They’ve got great happy hour deals in the pool, a private beach, volleyball nets, and super friendly staff.

Another Langkawi diamond that couldn’t be left off this list of the best beaches in Malaysia. Tanjung Rhu is clean and quiet and makes setting yourself up with a good book on a beach lounger a pleasure. Be sure to catch a sunset like no other here.

Located on the northeast side of the island, this place is great to visit on a long scooter day trip, or you could always book a couple of nights for the ultimate beach relaxation experience.

It’s one of the lesser visited sandy beaches in Langkawi (as it’s quite far from the main touristy areas), but it’s a destination you’ll never forget.

Where to Stay on Tanjung Rhu Beach, Malaysia?

Four Seasons Resort Langkawi   – This might simply be the best beach resort in Malaysia.  While it certainly is one of the more expensive beach hotels in the country, you certainly get what you pay for. Located on the major Malaysian island of Penang, Batu Ferringhi is a bucket list destination for travelers who love watersports and parasailing. Endless restaurants and shops are at your fingertips at this popular beach location.

During my first visit to Penang, I made my way to Batu Ferringhi beach every night for sunset, and we were rewarded with absolutely stunning colors.

I rented a jet ski for a fraction of the price you would pay in other countries and then went parasailing in a bright orange and pink sky. Truly an amazing experience, and I’m always telling people they need to visit Batu Ferringhi Beach during their trip to Malaysia.

Tucked away within Penang National Park , Kerachut Beach is a remote location perfectly suited to those who want a breather from the hustle and bustle of the city.

“At 23 sq km, this is Malaysia’s smallest national park, but its beach-fringed forests are home to silvered leaf monkeys, flying lemurs, leopard cats, abundant bird, amphibian, and reptile species.”

Green turtles are everywhere here, so much so a hatchery now exists to conserve them. It’s easily one of the best beaches in Malaysia, so make sure you don’t leave Penang without visiting Pantai Kerachut.

Well, there are no actual hotels or resorts nearby, but that doesn’t matter because I’m always recommending people to stay in Batu Ferringhi anyway. And then you can plan your day trips from there. 

So I’ll give another quality and budget-friendly option.

With many tourists visiting Sipadan Island for its exceptional diving opportunities, Malaysia’s only oceanic island, locals preserve the beaches with scuba diving permits that must be purchased in advance.

Sea turtles, colorful fish, and other marine life will keep you company as you immerse yourself in the warm waters. Sipadan Island is quite literally at the top of my Malaysia bucket, as I’ve heard it’s packed with so much to see both above and below the sea.

15)  Pulau Tiga

Nicknamed “Survivor Island” after it was the location for a season of the reality show, Pulau Tiga offers snorkeling, forest trails, and the chance to slather mineral-rich volcanic mud all over yourself. The choice is yours.

Borneo really is another underrated destination in Malaysia and is home to more iconic beaches than one can count – so it’d be well worth the journey to get out there.

A short drive from the Pangkor Island Ferry Port, Nipah Bay is a popular destination for Malaysians to escape their city homes for a short island getaway. It is generally quiet, steeped with greenery and foliage, and has a top beach. It’s also a great budget beach trip to add to your shortlist.

Once you’ve had your fill of this beautiful beach, there’s also a freshwater beach lake behind it, which connects to the ocean through a small river. For photo ops, this is the place.

It’s the #1 place to visit in the area and would be a fantastic addition to your Malaysia travel itinerary. Go, relax, and soak up this unique Golden Beach .

Stretching over 300,000 square kilometers of land to parts of Borneo, Malaysia is one of the go-to vacation spots when traveling to Asia.

The Indonesia-neighboring country is infamous for its hustling and bustling capital city of Kuala Lumpur, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, private-like islands, and of course, its blissful and dreamy beaches!

Immersing you into their enriched culture through the surrounding architectural designs and diversified local flavors.  

Greeted by lush vegetation, friendly locals, and perhaps an orangutan or other forms of exotic wildlife, Malaysia is the paradise you’ve been yearning for!

With various activities to fill your daily checklists, such as diving, water sports, hiking, or stealing those half-off deals at the mall, there is not a dull day throughout your stay.

In this article, we’ve compiled a list of 19 of the best beaches in Malaysia  worth the long-hour trips. Without further ado, let’s hop right in!  

19 Blue Lagoon Beach, Port Dickson

The groovy and sandy Blue Lagoon Beach is the perfect place to spend alone time with your loved ones. The beach is located just 17 km from Port Dickson, with around a 30-minute car ride. The perfect Malaysian destination for a family retreat!  

As a matter of fact, Blue Lagoon Beach is the preferred spot for the locals, precisely due to its more private placement than that of the most popular beaches.

Rest assured, visiting here (even during peak seasons ) should be a breeze, with fewer people visiting the beach during those times.  

The beach is filled with immense trees by the shore to serve as your natural umbrella from the scorching heat.

Blue Lagoon’s waters are known to be calm and relatively shallow due to their natural sandbanks, making it perfect for your little kids to swim and play around. The beach is also surrounded by local food stalls to recharge and savor Port Dickson’s cuisine.  

18 Saujana Beach (Pantai Saujana), Port Dickson

Saujana Beach, formerly known as the 4th-mile beach, is another beach located in Port Dickson . It is roughly 95 km from Malaysia’s capital city, Kuala Lumpur, where you can get there by train, bus, or car based on your preference.  

Pantai Saujana is about a full one kilometer in length and is a well-sought tourist location. With various water sports to choose from, such as water-skiing, jet-skiing, canoeing, banana boat riding, it makes it the perfect spot for families to enjoy those refreshing thrills!

If you decide to take your kids, the beach does have shallow waters where they can construct some sandcastles or have a splash or two.  

This beach is particularly suitable for camping! Saujana Beach has a handful of spaces to set as your camping sites, something you don’t typically find every day.

May it be singing along to some fire camp songs, roasting some marshmallows, or gazing at the star-glittered skies; this should be an experience to put in the books.  

17 Batu Ferringhi Beach, Penang  

I strongly suggest you visit Penang for at least one day and check out this beach.

Being one of Penang’s most sought-after destinations, Batu Ferringhi stretches along the white, sandy Malaysian beaches of Jalan Batu Ferringhi for its close-to-seaside location outside Georgetown.

One of the easiest ways to get here is by using a taxi service called Grab , a short 20-to-30-minute drive from Georgetown.  

The beach itself is a great attraction to locals with its excellent accessibility from the city. It is known for the various water sports activities offered in the area. To top that off, Batu Ferringhi is a great surfing spot for wave-riders.  

It is surrounded by laid-back nightlife with cafes featuring some live music to get in tune to, various belly-filling options, as well as a local night market offering exceptionally affordable souvenirs such as the traditional Malay batik.

16 Long Beach, Perhentian   

Despite the islands’ development over the years, Long Beach is located in the enchanting Perhentian Islands. There are two options to get to the island from most cities (such as Kuala Lumpur).

One way is to get there by bus to Kuala Besut (a ferry will take you to the island). The other way is to fly to Kota Bharu and take an hour cab ride to Kuala Besut.  

Long Beach is the perfect place to sunbathe, play some relaxing beats, and enjoy the refreshing ocean breeze with clear and pristine turquoise waters.  

The island offers thrilling nightlife, and a series of activities such as jungle trekking and kayaking as just a few of many and a suited-to-budget stays to choose from!  

15 Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu  

If you happen to be at Kota Kinabalu, then Tanjung Aru is the beach to be! Tanjung Aru is located 6 kilometers from Kota Kinabalu and you could get there with a 15-minute cab ride or a 20-minute bus ride (whichever suits you, really).  

The beach itself stretches a 2-kilometer length, with an area close by the Shangri-La Resort. Tanjung Aru is a popular hotspot for tourists and locals in the area for the beach’s infamous and glorious sunsets, worth the Instagram feed.  

Tanjung Aru is perfect for an afternoon dip into its lukewarm waters for a short swim or to read that mystery novel by the shores with a stunning view and the sound of the ocean breeze and crashing waves in the background (just perfect).

The beach is suitable for a large park with small huts and areas for some BBQ and grilled treats after a long day of thrills and bliss.

14 Kelambu Beach, Kudat 

13 UMS ODEC Beach, Kota Kinabalu 

In case you were wondering, UMS ODEC stands for Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s Outdoor Development Centre.

A beach stretching to the northeast of Lota Kinabalu, located right beside the Aquarium and Marine Museum.

To get there, you will need to travel from Kuala Lumpur by using a train and airplane for a roughly 5-hour journey in total.  

The beach rests against the thick and dense tropical jungle and is a popular snap spot for city tourists as they stand near the pier of rocks. With its mesmerizing white sands and serene turquoise oceans, it is indeed a sight to behold.  

If you (or your kids) plan to study in UMS, then they are in for a treat with their very own beach! The university’s outdoor development center has a wide variety of activities to offer, such as sunset-watching, horse-riding (if you’re feeling a little gallant), archery, jungle trekking, and even rev up some ATV engines for a tour!

12 Long Sand Beach, Redang 

Aka Pantai Pasir Panjang beach is a hidden gem in Redang Island, Malaysia, just 45 km in the north-northeast of Kuala Terengganu. Getting there simply takes an airplane ride with Berjaya Air from either Subang Airport (Kuala Lumpur) or Changi Airport (Singapore).  

Its crystal-clear seas, healthily vibrant corals, and powder-white sand are the reasons why this island is one of Malaysia’s favorite spots to travel to.

Due to its popularity, you might want to get an early booking for the available Malaysian beach resorts before your spot gets potentially occupied.  

Redang Island is a sanctuary for sea turtles, an endangered species, and other forms of marine life as part of the island’s protection program and policy.

A few famous beaches in the area, including Teluk Dalam Kecil and Teluk Dalam Besar, are a few of the favorite beaches to take that morning stroll while warmed by gentle morning rays of sunshine.  

11 Pantai Pasir Bogak Beach, Pangkor

Pasir Bogak Beach, also known as Pantai Pasir Bogak, is located west of Pangkor Island, just several kilometers from Pangkor Town.

You should be able to get there by rented car in no time or perhaps even walk to the beach. To get to Pangkor Island itself, you will need to go to Lumut Jetty , where a ferry will take you to the island.  

Needless to say, the beach is one of the best beaches on Pangkor Island, with its shallow and as clear as day waters. The beach is home to an array of local food stalls, cooking up fresh seafood and local Malay delights worth the try!  

Pasir Bogak Beach claims to have the world’s most fabulous swimming pool , but you’ll be the judge of that. The beach also offers various water activities, including jet-skiing, snorkeling, canoeing, and the list goes on.

For an enjoyable stay, try sleeping the night in one of the traditional Malaysian-style huts near the beach!

10 Pantai Puteri Dewi, Pangkor 

9 Teluk Segadas Beach, Pangkor

Psst, for anyone looking for a lowkey beach, this is one place in Malaysia you have to go to. Teluk Segadas is a virgin beach, rested in the southwestern part of Pangkor Island.

Not many know about this small beach, and that’s because getting here is only for the chosen few (those who are willing to make an effort). To reach the beach it does require a roughly 20-minute jungle trek through majestic hills.  

While there are not many activities here, due to its secluded area, it still makes the perfect place to truly spend some alone time with your friends and family. The beach is powdered with white-golden sands and gentle cyan-colored waves, blanketing the shores.  

The beach’s waters are known to be gentle and shallow, making it the perfect spot for swims and a couple of splashes here and there. Teluk Segadas is also known by locals as a campsite; as long as you bring your own essentials , you’re in for a treat!  

8 Kerachut Beach, Penang

The remote beach is located in the vast white sands of Penang National Park in Penang Island. You can either hire a boat from Teluk Bahang or trek a 2-hour hike through the park to access the beach .  

Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by green turtles surrounding the area! With these turtles as an endangered species, the beach has established its own turtle hatchery to preserve and take care of the surrounding wildlife.  

The beach is known for its hiking trails to explore some of its tropical sceneries in the Canopy Walkway, leading near the hilltop.

This trek requires extra effort and carefulness due to its steep and narrow pathways, so be sure to carry a good pair of hiking shoes with with ankle support and bring your A-game to the test!  

7 Black Sand Beach, Langkawi 

If white and golden sands are boring you, then this is the beach to go to. The Black Sand Beach actually has black sand (something you don’t see every day)!

The beach is located on Jalan Teluk Yu road in Langkawi’s northern shores, 20 kilometers from Kuah Town by the local cab or car.  

The Black Sand Beach is taled by legends of giant eagles, shipwrecks, geological wonders, and ash from burnt rice paddies. Until this very day, its black sand still remains a mystery to be solved.  

Black Sand Beach serves as a great beach to take casual strolls along the shoreline and take a glimpse of. Traditional wooden jetty serving in the fish village close by. Though it doesn’t offer many activities, it’s definitely worth the visit!  

6 Tanjung Rhu Beach, Langkawi

5 Turtle Beach, Perhentian Besar  

Conveniently located in the Perhentian Islands, Perhentian Besar, to be exact. To get there , travelers usually fly to Kota Bahru, followed by taking a bus or cab to the port of Kuala Besut.

The local ferry will take you to Perhentian Besar (Tip: make sure you mention Perhentian Besar as your final stop ).  

Surrounded by stretching acres of sandy beaches and pristine waters, the beach is the place to go to in Malaysia, especially for families! The island also has an accessible neighbor named Perhentian Kecil, which is more suited for solo trippers.  

Unfortunately, Turtle Beach rarely has actual turtles due to local tourism, but it still offers much more!

With diving and snorkeling as part of your underwater itineraries, you should have to gaze at the splendors of marine life. Plus, you can even volunteer to preserve the beach’s flora and fauna (to give back to Mother Earth).  

4 The Taaras Beach, Redang   

3 Monkey Bay, Tioman  

Placed on the west coast of Tioman Island , the Monkey Bay is a remote-accessed getaway by either a boat from any village in Tioman Island or take a 1-hour hike   (if you’re feeling a little venturous) from Salang.  

The bay is well known for being one of Malaysia’s famous snorkeling destinations to catch some local fish swimming to and about. It is also complemented by its serene seas and its lively rainforests, making it an experience worth remembering for years to come.  

As the name suggests, the island is crawling with exotic monkeys! So, please be mindful of your belongings and follow the local guidelines on how to stay safe from any harm or item losses.

2 Juara Beach, Tioman

Perhaps it’s the way they manage to be arrestingly beautiful and relaxing, yet somehow most remain free from sun-craving crowds of tourists. Plus, you know, it doesn’t hurt that they’re in Malaysia – a country famed for its groundbreaking, culture-combining cuisine, booming cities, and utterly unique wildlife. 

Whether you’re looking for a two-week beach sprawl or a quick dip in the sea in between jungle excursions, you’ll find your paradise in Malaysia. Here are some we think you’ll lov e.

Best Malaysia Beaches:

Pantai cenang, langkawi island.

One of the only inhabited islands in a large archipelago,  Langkawi Island sits roughly twenty kilometres off Malaysia’s west coast at the point where it borders Thailand. On a clear day, you can actually see both countries in the distance from the island’s beaches . 

Langkawi is less developed than some of its nearby Thai counterparts, and the many beaches that ring the small isle are pristine and peaceful. You’ll find some stunning resorts across the island, hemmed in by lush jungle and rugged hills rolling right up to the shoreline.

The most famous beach on the island is Pantai Cenang, though you may prefer to venture out and find your own secluded stretch of sand. The nearby Kilim Karst Geoforest Park makes for a superb day’s exploration, with caves, mangroves swamps, and a floating fishery.

Coral Beach, Perhentian Islands

Between April and September, the  Perhentian Islands off Malayia’s north-east coast are a prime spot for snorkelling and diving. Head out to explore the coral reefs offshore, and you can expect to swim alongside hawksbill turtles, sting rays, manta rays and even reef sharks.

The two islands that comprise the Perhentians are Besar (big), and Kecil (small). The heavily-forest Besar is the pricier choice, popular with honeymooners and loved-up couples, while Kecil is a favourite of backpackers. Head to Coral Beach if you’re looking to sit on the sands and contemplate the vivid sunset, or visit Long Beach for a party atmosphere. 

Teluk Dalam Besar, Redang Island

One of the best beaches in Malaysia for lovers of peaceful solitude is Teluk Dalam Besar. Located in a a sheltered bay, you’ll have the immaculate sands all to yourself. Pulau Redang , one of the largest islands on Mayalsia’s east coast, has crystal clear waters and is peppered with excellent four-star hotels, each with their own spotless stretch of beach. 

This island is another great spot for diving, and is perfect for travellers who simply want to bask in tropical climes, listening to lapping waves. There are few roads, adding to the sense of tranquillity, and visitors can while away the hours snorkelling, trekking through the jungle, or taking boats out on the sea. 

Tanjon Jara Resort, Kuala Terennganu

The capital of Malaysia’s Terennganu District, Kuala Terennganu is a rapidly growing city, sprung up from what was a small fishing town. There are some pretty sights, particularly the city’s mosques, but that’s not what we’ve come for: we want  beaches .

The  Tanjong Jara Resort , just outside the city, is everything you picture when you hear the phrase “tropical paradise”. If waking up in a gigantic white bed and opening the curtains to reveal an immaculate, vacant strip of golden sand before a turquoise sea sounds like a good time, you’ll adore it here. Everything is high-end: the service, the architecture, the pools, even the towering palms that sway in the breeze. 

Juara, Tioman Island

Tioman  is less about fine dining and relaxation, and more about adventure. The island has a rugged feel to it, a boisterous energy in which not everything is built for the whims of tourists. Alcohol is cheap, monkeys and lizards abound, and cats come and go as they please.

There are plenty of beaches to be found – interspersed with stretches of thick jungle – and our favourite is Juara, on the island’s east side. The coral here still retains a lot of colour, and the beach is quiet no matter which season you visit. 

Pangkor Laut Resort, Pangkor Laut Island

Covering 298 acres of the island,  Pangkor Laut Resort  is a tangible slice of Shangri La. The renowned spa consists of hilltop villas, infinite pools, fountains, manicured gardens, seafront restaurants on stilts above the water, and endless elegant lounges to recline in and ponder how very lucky you are.

The beach is about as wondrous as you’d expect from an establishment that was once a favourite of Pavarotti, and the island is teeming with exotic birdlife. There’s a huge spa village too, should you feel like taking your relaxation up a notch. In addition to Penang’s mythic offerings fusing Malay, Indian, Chinese, and Peranakan flavors, visitors will also find a variety of European, Middle Eastern, and North American fare as well.

Here are a few suggestions of places to try while visiting Batu Ferringhi:

Local (Penang) Cuisine

If you’re craving the real deal, head to the Batu Ferringhi Night Market for some of the best street food stalls in town.

Long Beach Kafe (Long Beach Food Court) is often considered one of the best bets in and around the Night Market.

If you’re looking for a more traditional sit-down restaurant, try Enca Cafe and Power-Up . Andrew’s Kampung can’t be beat for delicious Penang Chinese food in a casual setting.

Feet-in-the-Sand Dining

Our favorite on-the-beach eatery in Batu Ferringhi is Frandy’s Beach Bar , but you’ll have a bit of a walk ahead of you coming from the center of town.

Bora Bora by Sunset is also a good bet, though it tends to run a bit pricier than other places.

International Fare

For a taste of home (or something a bit more exotic, depending on where you are from), Batu Ferringhi has a number of great options available for travelers.

For breakfast, brunch, or lunch, check out Ferringhi Coffee Garden . Living Room Cafe serves up tasty Asian fusion dishes with a homey atmosphere. Have a hankering for Lebanese? Try out the Grand Lebanon . For the best buffet in town, head to The Spice Market Cafe .

Located just 7 km west of town is a nature lover’s paradise and perhaps one of the island’s greatest natural assets: Penang National Park .

Miraculously under-visited and teeming with birds, Macaque monkeys, and other wildlife, you could easily spend an entire day hiking around the park and only run into a handful of others.

Most visitors to Penang National Park hire a boat and head straight for Monkey Beach (Teluk Duyung) (which is decidedly NOT under-visited). But there’s so much more coastline worth exploring!

For a short hike from the park entrance, Teluk Ailing is a low-key alternative to Monkey Beach.

But the award for arguably the best beach on the island (and fewest crowds) goes to Pantai Kerachut (Turtle Beach) , which is most commonly accessed via a moderate-strenuous 7 km hike from the park entrance.

Add another couple of kilometers and head south to Teluk Kampi for the ultimate in peace and seclusion on Penang Island.

Before visiting Penang, we heard about a lot of visitors choosing to base themselves out of George Town —the biggest city and cultural epicenter of Penang – and making day trips to Batu Ferringhi.

What we quickly learned after arriving is that a number of people also do the opposite—basing themselves out of their comfortable beach digs for day trips to George Town, Penang Hill , and Tanjung Bungah from Batu Ferringhi.

After all, the travel time between Batu Ferringhi and George Town is only about 40 minutes (by taxi, ride share, and even public bus).

George Town is not to be missed for its historical significance and excellent historic attractions (it is, after all, a UNESCO World Heritage designated city ), but also for the diverse community its attracted over the past several centuries (and the amazing cuisine that’s developed alongside it!).

When Lori suggested we visit the nearby spice garden, I wasn’t all that enthused about it. I should have been! The Tropical Spice Garden just outside of Batu Ferringhi far surpassed my expectations and was one of the highlights of our visit to the area.

With over 500 species of tropical spices spanning the vast garden (that feels more like exploring a dense, yet carefully planned and maintained, tropical forest reserve), there’s enough here to fill an hour or two.

Afterwards, grab lunch at the excellent onsite Tree Monkey Restaurant, take a personalized cooking class at the culinary school, or carry on to Entopia or Penang National Park.

One of the biggest surprises for us was spotting a gaggle of Macaque monkeys and a sizable monitor lizard within ten minutes of our arrival in Batu Ferringhi.

These sightings continued throughout our entire time, particularly around the northeasternmost end of the beach near the rocky point.

We expected this from our time in Borneo, but not from somewhere as popular and urbanized as Batu Ferringhi Beach.

If you are traveling with kids of any age, you’ll definitely want to check out at least one, if not both, of these unique theme parks located just 6 km from town.

Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm is a butterfly and wildlife experience like no other. Featuring over 15,000 butterflies (and 150 other species of native critters, large and small), Entopia amazes and educates while fostering an appreciation for these stunning creatures.

ESCAPE Penang claims to be the #1 theme park in Malaysia, and it’s not hard to see why that might be the case. It’s like an amusement park, water park, zip line canopy tour, climbing gym, and giant playground rolled into one!

Both parks can easily be accessed from Batu Ferringhi via the public bus or ride share (Grab).

Lori and I certainly didn’t expect getting around town (and in and out of town) to be so cheap or easy. But it was, and we found it to be a huge advantage to staying in Batu Ferringhi, particularly with little ones.

On the whole, the rapidPenang public bus was a straightforward and efficient way to get to all of the top attractions near town, like Penang National Park, the Tropical Spice Garden, Entopia, ESCAPE, and even the neighboring town of Tanjung Bungah.

We also found the bus to be very convenient just getting around town, especially in a downpour.

I did find myself waiting a bit at the transit center in Teluk Bahang (on the way back to Batu Ferringhi), but the small inconvenience was worth the cost savings.

When we couldn’t take the bus, we were usually successful in hiring a Grab (think Uber) to take us where we needed to go.

After an adventure-packed day (or one spent doing very little at all), you can look forward to heading down to the beach for an often stunning show of light and color.

Sunsets on Batu Ferringhi Beach are particularly special because it is the only populated sandy beach that faces west (northwest to be exact) on Penang Island.

Most of the year, the sun sets over the peninsula of Penang National Park. Your best chances of catching an over-the-water sunset will be in June when the sun sets farthest to the right.

Whichever time of year you visit, it’s not to be missed!

If you’ve got your heart set on rustic beach huts, carefree swims in crystalline water, and some of Malaysia’s best snorkeling or diving, you may want to skip Batu Ferringhi and check out places like Sabah or Langkawi instead.

Unfortunately, there just aren’t a lot of non -motorized water activities to be had these days along Batu Ferringhi Beach.

Water contamination related to industrial activity and untreated sewage has decimated marine life, impacted visibility for diving and snorkeling, and poses an increased risk to swimmers.

Jellyfish infestations (fueled by increased pollution) continue to pose problems for swimmers as well.

In the place of swimming and snorkeling, Batu Ferringhi is ground zero for motorized water sports on the island, such as parasailing, jet skiing, and banana boat rides.

But before you dive in, it’s important to mention that, while steps have been taken in recent years to improve safety and regulation, the operation of these activities remains highly controversial, both for their environmental impact and safety record.

With all that said, we still highly recommend a visit to Batu Ferringhi for all the great reasons we’ve listed throughout this article. But we also think it’s important to inform other travelers of some of the downsides and limitations of visiting this unique beach destination.

Owing to its popularity and issues with poor water quality, Batu Ferringhi often gets a bad rap. And if you are traveling to Malaysia specifically for a beach vacation, there are certainly better places to spend your money.

With that said, if you are already planning a trip to Penang to experience the incredible cultural, people, history, food, and natural landscape of this amazing island, there may be no better place for a beach break than Batu Ferringhi.

After having visited numerous top beaches in Borneo, Thailand, and elsewhere in Southeast Asia, we wondered if our time in Batu Ferringhi would be well spent.

In hindsight, Lori and I are so glad we visited, particularly for the fun excursions a short distance from town, but also for all Batu Ferringhi, itself, has to offer.

The Best Underrated Beaches to Visit in Malaysia

Malaysia is well-known for its beautiful beaches such as Tioman Island , Redang Island, and Batu Ferringhi beach, but there are beaches that are more secluded, if you’re hankering for a relaxing experience, with tranquil, scenic views. Here are the best underrated beaches to visit and relax on while you’re in Malaysia.

1. the perhentian islands.

Perhentian Islands comprise of two islands: Perhentian Kecil (small island) and Perhentian Besar (big island). Relax by the beaches with crystal clear waters and enjoy the beach activities at Long Beach and Coral Bay at Perhentian Kecil. Take a boat from Kuala Besut with a return ticket (RM70). You also have to pay the “Marine Park Conservation Charge” (RM30 for foreigners and RM5 for locals).

Why not go scuba diving to explore the aquatic wonders including coral reefs, fish, turtles, and sharks? Relax on the sandy beaches and soak up with the sun while you enjoy the scenery and have fun with the little turtles at Turtle Beach in Perhentian Besar.

2. Gaya Island

Gaya Island is 10 minutes away from Kota Kinabalu by boat. Spend some time on the semi-private beaches. where you can explore the colourful sea life by snorkelling in the clear waters. You will be able to see variety of sea creatures, from sea snakes to clownfish. Drop by the turtle conservation to see how well the turtles are looked after. You can then go hiking through the rainforest to discover the luscious foliage and jungle animals. Don’t leave your items around for too long though, as the curious monkeys will drop by!

Kerachut Beach

Kerachut Beach is one of the more secluded beaches in Penang. You need to take a two-hour hike through the Penang National Park to get there, or you can hire a boat near the entrance of Penang National Park, Teluk Bahang. You will spot a meromictic lake which has two layers of salt and fresh water that are mixed together.

Visit the Pantai Kerachut Turtle Conservation Centre to learn more about how the turtles are nurtured, and how their eggs are hatched before they are returned to the sea.

Monkey Beach

Similar to Kerachut Beach, you can either hike through or take a boat from Penang National Park to visit the scenic Monkey Beach . You will see some long-tailed macaques that give this beach its name, hanging around looking out for food. There are cafes if you’re hungry, and you can also have a picnic or camp overnight at Monkey Beach.

3. Pasir Tengkorak Beach

Located at the northwest of Langkawi Island, Pasir Tengkorak Beach (Sandy Skulls Beach) is a tranquil beach guarded by rocky walls at both ends. The rocky walls are in Machinchang Formation due to the effects of nature (a combination of algae, sandstone and shale). After you walk through the forested park, you will be welcomed by the beach with clear blue sky and calming waters. This is a wonderful place to soak up the sun and enjoy swimming in the calm waters.

4. Kapas Island

Head for Kapas Island to enjoy its serene surrounding with crystal-clear waters and white sandy beaches. Travel down to Kuala Terengganu, then take a public bus or taxi to Marang Jetty for the 20-minute boat ride to Kapas Island.

A great place for snorkelling and scuba-diving, you can make friends with the various species (fishes, turtles, corals, and sharks) in clear waters or take a stroll along the beach, from one end to the other, while admiring the island’s natural beauty. Join in one of the popular games of volleyball on the beach and go for a hike in the jungle. Or you could just relax in a hammock and get lost in a good book.

5. Rawa Island

Pulau Rawa (Rawa Island) is a coral island in Johor. You will be amazed by its sandy beaches and turquoise waters, ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving. Take a boat from Mersing Jetty and while waiting, try some local foods and browse the stalls for beach holiday necessities. You could rent a canoe and go kayaking to explore the island or just kick back on the beach with some cool drinks, fun activities to enjoy, and party all night at the beach shack.

6. Damai Beach

An hour’s drive from Kuching and you will be welcomed by the sea breeze and scenic views of Damai Beach . Stop by the Damai Central which has everything you need: convenience stores, restaurants, bars, food stalls, and toilets. Learn about the Sarawak’s culture by visiting the Sarawak Cultural Village (10 minutes’ walk from the beach), home to the annual Rainforest World Music Festival . Don’t forget to watch the sunset views at the beach in the evenings. Hop on the Irrawaddy Dolphin Cruise to discover the Irrawaddy dolphins, a local fishing village, and exotic mangrove along the Santubong and Salak rivers.

7. Mersing Beach

The prices of souvenirs and food in área are also quite affordable because this área is a customs-free area. There are many beautiful coral reefs that attract tourists.

Malaysia was the first stop on my current Asia backpacking trip/ writing retreat . It was the cheapest place to fly in Asia and I meant to stay there for only a few days before moving on to other countries.

That didn’t happen, because I found out I accidentally landed in an amazingly inspiring country.

Rich, lush forests coated much of the land, diverse culture oozed from every corner of every city and I found paradise in the hilly jungles.

Malaysia was the last country I expected to fall in love with or find great writing spots, yet here we are.

Although I didn’t have much time to write because I was roaming the country trying to see everything I could, I did find some inspiring places that were perfect to write in.

This article will share them with you.

1. Kuala Lumpur

This was my first introduction to Malaysia. Although I’m not usually a fan of big cities, to my surprise I loved Kuala Lumpur. There are so many cultures you can encounter in just that one city, and you can get inspiration from both its modern architecture in buildings like the Petronas Towers and from its historical buildings in areas like the colonial walk and Chinatown.

KL: Where To Write & Find Inspiration

Here you’ll find both a great bird’s eye view of the city in the Sky Deck and a great place to write in the Sky Café.

I don’t know about you, but getting to the top of a city and seeing the streets I’ve wandered from a new perspective is very inspiring.

Colonial Walk

Kuala Lumpur had a lot of influence from Western colonizers, and you can find that to still be very evident in the old colonial part of the city.

Located near Chinatown and Little India, you can explore the buildings that still exist from the colonial era. It’s the perfect place to wander if you want to see cultural diversity and history in action.

Botanic Gardens

Most people will try to deter you from coming out here. It’s not that easy to get to, and it’s very run down. But that’s a reason why you should go.

Touristy places are often a terrible damper on the inspiration travel offers, and seeing places that were once beautiful but fell to waste should give you great inspiration.

The gardens had a post-apocalyptic feel to them, with shabby structures found throughout the near empty gardens and with abandoned buildings and ticket booths. You can tell it was one a place crowded with people and luxury, but now feels deserted.

They’re not deserted; workers can still be found watering and caring for the plants. But other than the plants, the rest of the Botanic Gardens aren’t well maintained and there weren’t many visitors.

KL: Where To Stay

Sure, you can get a luxury hotel for very cheap compared to Western prices, but why pay more if you don’t have to? I chose some of the cheapest options for accommodation. Both were absolutely perfect spots to write, and also with very private capsule bunks.

Perfect if you want a rather spacious capsule-style bunk and an inviting, comfy common area where you can write. The outdoor terrace has a few of the Petronas Towers in the distance, lots of comfy seating to choose from, modern décor and unlimited free tea to fuel you.

Space Hotel

If you’re writing a Sci-Fi book like I was, this is the place for you. You sleep in a space pod that is very futuristic looking, and there’s a table you can fold out to use as a desk as you write. I wish I scheduled more time to spend a whole day writing in that capsule.

Similarly, Melaka has diverse populations residing in it as well. And since it’s a smaller city, that diversity is even more evident.

Melaka is an extremely historically significant city. It was once a major colonial port city for the maritime Silk Road, and you can see evidence of the Portuguese, Dutch, British and Chinese influence on this city.

From the European architecture next to Chinese temples and Hindu temples next to mosques, you can experience various places throughout the world in one city!

Melaka: Where To Write & Find Inspiration

So Melaka is actually known for its cafés. I only spent a day in Melaka, so it was extremely difficult trying to decide which cafés to stop at. I had only so much time!

Chances are you won’t have unlimited time to explore all of Melaka’s cafés, so here are the ones I encountered that I thought would be amazing as a place to write.

Noah ArtCafé

To be among fellow artists, grab a cup of coffee and a seat to write at this café.

If a particular piece of art in this café feels especially inspiring to you, you can actually buy it and bring it home with you!

Serama Boutique Café

(15, Jalan Tukang Emas)

I passed by this café and immediately thought it would be the perfect spot to write.

(Although admittedly, I thought this about every café in Melaka.)

It has an antique theme, and again, if any of the items inspire you can buy an antique to bring home with you!

Calanthe Art Café

(17, Jalan Hang Kasturi)

So Melaka has a lot of art cafés, because this is yet another one! It’s the most cheerful one I came by, so it’s great if you can use some color and happiness- helpful if you’re in a writing rut.

It also serves coffee drinks from all 13 states in Malaysia, so you can try coffee from the whole country in just one place! If you’re a coffee-fueled kind of writer, this just may be your paradise.

Melaka: Where To Stay

Located just off the Melaka River, you’re centrally located to the best part of town. You’ll be in walking distance of all the city’s most inspiring locations and amazing street art.

You can also sit right outside the hotel and write there. There’s also a lot of cafés nearby where you can move to and write.

3. Cameron Highlands

If I had to recommend one place for writers to go for writing inspiration in Malaysia, it would be the Cameron Highlands.

My days there, adding up to a week, were spent hiking the jungle covered hills, visiting tea plantations for refreshing cups of the tea, practicing yoga and then the rest of the day writing. And out of all the other places I visited in Malaysia, I got the most writing done in the Cameron Highlands.

It was hard not to write with the cool, mountain air filling my lungs to clear my mind of the rest of the country’s mugginess and with the lush greenery begging to be channeled for inspiration.

It doesn’t hurt that tea has long been my fuel during writing sessions, and I was drinking fresh cups of it while viewing the unbelievably gorgeous hilly fields of tea trees that produced it.

If this sounds like the best place for a writing retreat to you too, book your flight to Kuala Lumpur, buy a bus ticket to the Cameron Highlands and bring this guide along to visit the following places.

Cameron Highlands: Where To Write & Find Inspiration

Take a hike.

The hikes in the Cameron Highlands were gorgeous. Some were a bit tough, but they were definitely doable. My recommendation would be to get the Maps.me app and download the map for Malaysia, which will show you the trails in Cameron Highlands.

I think that the best hike is to take trail 10, which will give you nice views at the top, and spill down to trail 8, which ends in Tea House 1. It is a bit strenuous, but so worth it.

Finding information about hiking in Cameron Highlands is hard to find, but no worries! I’ve written a guide on the best hikes in the Cameron Highlands .

Tea Plantation Tea House

The best part of the Cameron Highlands, in my opinion, are the gorgeous, lush plantations of tea trees.

The best plantation tea house is probably Boh plantation . To get there you can either take a local bus and then walk an hour through the plantation, or you can take a taxi. I, the budget backpacker, chose the former option, but lucked out with getting a ride back to the bus stop from a nice Malaysian family.

An easier option is Tea House 1, which is owned by the Cameron Tea Valley plantation . The tea house isn’t as nice, but the view certainly is. And I highly recommend the cheesecake.

Whichever you choose, you can bring your laptop or notebook along and spend the day writing with some of the most gorgeous views in Malaysia. In fact, those tea tree fields were definitely among the most beautiful places I have traveled to.  

Cameron Highlands: Where To Stay

While hostels are typically for the starving artist, this youthful hostel was a great place to write for me. There are three floors of common rooms for you to pick from to set up base to write. I like the trendy café-style of the first floor and the bean bags on the third floor.

They also organize hikes and had yoga while I was there, so this place was absolute perfection for me.

Cameron Highlands Resort

But if you aren’t a hostel person or are a best-selling writer with cash to spend, this resort looks like an awesome place for a writing retreat.

Step back into time at the 1930’s style cottage and enjoy the modern amenities it offers. The highlight is definitely the gorgeous lush views that will keep you company as you write in your room or on the terrace.

Like in Kuala Lumpur and Melaka, the island of Penang has seen a diverse history. Its main city, Georgetown, was a popular port city for European colonizers and Chinese traders. As such, the streets of Georgetown have many influences from both European and Chinese architecture.

It’s a culturally rich place but also holds that laid-back vibe most islands around the world seem to share.

There’s more to Penang than just Georgetown, though, because the island is also host to a national park boasting beautiful nature hikes that lead to beaches.

So if the inspiration you’re looking for can come from both a historical port town where diverse cultures mingle together and from jungle terrain with sandy beach borders, then Penang is the place for you.

Penang: Where To Write & Find Inspiration

The jetties are houses built on stilts in the water, for which reason the residents don’t need to pay taxes since they’re not technically on Georgetown land. Although quite touristy with shops selling souvenirs and food, its still a cool place to experience.

I first went on a weekend, and it was incredibly crowded. But when I returned on a Tuesday (when most shops and restaurants in Georgetown- and other Malaysian cities- are closed), I found this to be a completely different place. It was very calm and I wrote for a while in my journal sitting at the edge of the jetties on a deck that met the open water.

Hin Bus Depot

An abandoned bus station turned into a trendy community space, the Hin Bus Depot is one of my favorite places in Georgetown.

You’ll find lots of cool art here, and on Sundays they have a market I never wanted to leave (but my wallet forced me to). I had the most delicious chicken teriyaki I’ve ever had and a delicious tea drink I’m now craving as I write about it.

A dessert shop, Creameal, is located at the Hin Bus Depot, and I had Earl Grey Lavender ice cream there. I am obsessed with both Earl Grey and lavender, so that ice cream was heaven for me. This place isn’t open only on Sundays, so you can stop by any day for some sweet tooth satisfaction and for a trendy place to write in.

National Park

If you prefer nature areas to write, the National Park is big enough for you to find the perfect spot. There were some picnic tables and benches not far from the entrance of the park that would have been perfect for a writing session.

You can also make the hike to one of the beaches and write there, or you can even take a boat ride to the beaches if you aren’t feeling exercise.

I chose to write at a gazebo at the entrance of a bridge crossing over the sea’s tide. The combination of the sounds of the sea and the jungle worked wonders on my creativity.

The Blue Mansion

This mansion is award-winning for its preservation, and it’s absolutely gorgeous. Named for the indigo blue paint that colors it, the mansion also has supposedly achieved Feng Shui perfection. Its architecture is influenced by both the East and West. Although a traditional Chinese house, its tile floors and stained-glass windows were imported from England.

I took a tour of this place, and afterward the tour I sat down at a table in the main courtyard while it rained. And I wrote as hard as the rain falling into the courtyard, filling it up quickly with water.

(Which, by the way, was intentional; according to Chinese tradition, rain brings wealth and prosperity, so the open courtyards in wealthy houses were built to welcome the rain in.)

Bonus: A Penang Writing Challenge

You’ll find a lot of amazing street art in Georgetown. Your challenge is to pick one (or several) and write a story based on them.

Penang: Where To Stay

Perfect for the budget traveler, this hotel is the most minimalistic and urban as it could get. It’s a chain of hotels offering rooms located in containers.

I chose the cheaper option of a capsule, which was long enough to lay in and tall enough to sit up in. It also has a fold out table  big enough for me to prop up my laptop on to write.

I love snuggling up in small spaces, but if you get claustrophobic, you should probably steer clear of this one.

If it were in my budget, The Blue Mansion would have been my choice for accommodation during my time in Georgetown. I already told you why it was a great place to write. So imagine how amazing it would be to sleep there too!

They also have a restaurant serving breakfast downstairs, another one serving lunch and dinner upstairs and a bar downstairs. You really have no reason to leave the mansion if you book a stay there, maximizing the time you can spend writing!

This has probably been the most beautiful hotel I found in Malaysia to stay at for a writing retreat.

Books to Read for Inspiration:

As a writer, it’s crucial to read other’s writing to improve your own. And what better way to learn more about Malaysia’s culture and history before going than by reading a book set there?

Who knows, maybe one of these will even inspire writing your own book set in Malaysia. At the very least, these books will definitely convince you to visit the country if my guide hasn’t already.

The Most Fun In KL? Sunway Lagoon Review [2024]

Heading to Kuala Lumpur and looking for an awesome day of fun? Looking for a KL Airport stopover alternative? Seen Sunway Lagoon advertised in a zillion places in Malaysia and wondering what it is?

Then this Sunway Lagoon blog review can help you!

The Sunway Lagoon Malaysia Theme Park is a large theme park located in Bandar Sunway (Sunway City) which is about half an hour from the centre of Kuala Lumpur or 45 minutes from KL Airport. This makes it an easy place to visit from Kuala Lumpur or when travelling around Malaysia.

If you are looking for an easy place to visit to have lots of fun, particularly for families, then you should definitely consider a day at Sunway Lagoon KL. From splashing in the Water Park to taking a Sunway Lagoon roller coaster to seeing white tigers, there are many things to do in Sunway Lagoon.

In this Sunway Lagoon review, I share with you what to do in Sunway Lagoon Kuala Lumpur Malaysia as well as give you information about how to go to Sunway Lagoon, where to stay and the best Sunway Lagoon promotion for the cheapest tickets . I also share my thoughts about whether you should visit Sunway Lagoon as well as tips so you have the perfect Sunway Lagoon trip.

Spoiler alert: Yes, I think you should visit Sunway Lagoon!

Although if you are travelling alone, I would not recommend Sunway Lagoon. It’s not really a theme park made for solo travellers – more about this below.

It’s also worth considering Sunway Lagoon as an alternative to a Kuala Lumpur stopover if you are stopping in this area for a couple of days. There are many hotels attached to the Sunway Lagoon Park Malaysia as well as a huge Sunway Lagoon shopping mall with activities and we have had fun three day breaks here.

Sunway Lagoon Review

The Sunway Lagoon Resort Theme Park consists of seven different lands with a variety of Sunway Lagoon activities. Below, I step through each land one by one sharing the highlights and Sunway Lagoon attractions at each to help you decide if this theme park is for you!

Note that although seven lands can feel like a lot, they are generally on the small side and we found one day was enough to visit all of them and go on everything on our Sunway Lagoon rides list. In fact, on a non-busy day, you could probably do everything you want to do within half a day.

I would call Sunway Lagoon primarily a water park. It has other attractions too, but its water park areas are where this park stands out. The other areas are quite minor.

When you enter the theme park, check out the big sign for the times of any special shows during your visit.

Amusement Park Sunway Lagoon

The Sunway Lagoon Amusement Park starts near the Sunway Lagoon entrance so it’s a logical place to start a visit, especially since I think it makes most sense to do the dry attractions first then switch to swim wear and spend the rest of the day getting very, very wet.

When I first came to Sunway Lagoon, this was a bigger area with a Wild West theme and some other rides tacked on.

Now, it is has somewhat been split into two lands – this Amusement Park and the Night Park (coming up). So there is not all that much in this land and it’s not for younger kids as the two main rides have a 1.4 metre height limit (outside of this area, most height limits are 1.1 metres).

It’s a fun place to start the day with some spinning Apache Ports, a fun ferris wheel (called Wagon Wheel) and a carousel the whole family can enjoy.

For older kids and adults, definitely head to the roller coaster Sunway Lagoon, Lost City of Gold Scream Coaster. Unfortunately, I always seem to be here with kids under 1.4 metres so I haven’t been able to try this, but it looks fun!

There is also the Sunway Lagoon pirate ship here. It’s not the usual pirate ship deal which rocks back and forth. It does do this, but it also goes all the way around in a 360 degree loop. Fun!

Finally, there is also the Sunway Lagoon suspension bridge that takes you right over the lagoon part of the park to the other side when you are ready to hit the water attractions. It gives you great views of the park and claims to be the longest suspension bridge in the world. It’s definitely worth walking over.

Unlike many theme parks, we visited here on a weekday and did not line up for anything so it was easy to go on everything we wanted.

Sunway Lagoon Scream Park

The Scream Park Sunway Lagoon Theme Park Malaysia is where adults should head to scream their heads off!

Located in the middle of the Amusement Park, this area primarily consists of a huge, haunted house (Zombie Lockdown) with some Ghostbusters theming. Although walking through here felt like I was in the TV show,  The Walking Dead , with zombie actors ready to eat us at every turn!

The zombies do a great job and even though I mostly found it funny rather than scary, I still screamed a few times! It was different for my 8 year-old who was terrified, and it was a mistake to take her in.

The main attraction in this area is Sharknado Alive, based on the films by the same name. There are a few parts to this attraction from feeling like sharks are attacking you as you walk through a tunnel in 3D glasses to a shark dunk tank.

There is not much else here.

Sunway Lagoon Night Park

A new addition since I last visited is the Night Park. This is advertised as being open after 6pm, but I was happy to find that the standard amusement park rides, like the Grand Canyon River Rapids ride, the Alamo plane ride and a fast spinning ride are open during the day.

These rides are great for kids who miss out on the 1.4 metre height requirement for some of the rides in the Amusement Park, and we had a lot of fun here.

Warning: I did get quite wet on the river rapids ride so maybe put your swim suit on first!

It has a fun, Wild West theme.

I find it a little confusing how this park works and whether a regular day ticket allows you to stay. It seems you need a separate ticket – you definitely did when we were here. It all looked quite terrifying actually and not for me. If you have been to the Night Park, please contact me and let me know your thoughts so I can update this with more information.

Sunway Lagoon X Park (Formerly Extreme Park)

The X Park Sunway Lagoon is for teenagers and adults. It has more thrilling Sunway Lagoon facilities like the chance to go bungee jumping Sunway Lagoon, kayak, learn archery or go on a flying fox Sunway Lagoon.

You can also drive an ATV or go kart Sunway Lagoon.

A popular choice for people who really want to get the heart thumping is the G Force X Sunway Lagoon. You sit in a small capsule as you are propelled from 0 to 120 kilometres/hour in two seconds! It’s Asia’s highest sling shot ride and I’ll have to let you work out if this is awesome or not for yourself – I am too scared to try the Sunway Lagoon G Force X 🙂

The downside is that most of these attractions cost extra like the G-Force X and Bungee Jump. They aren’t cheap either with activities such as go karting starting at RM35. It seems a lot when you’ve already paid to enter the park.

Sunway Lagoon Wildlife Park

If you need a moment to catch your breath after the rides in Sunway Lagoon Resort Malaysia, head to the Wildlife Park Sunway Lagoon. This is a small area but there are quite a few animals – with over 150 species.

The highlight of the Sunway Lagoon zoo is definitely the white tigers. These are albino Malaysian tigers and, at feeding times, you can see them up close behind a glass wall.

It’s worth looking at the feeding times on arrival at Sunway Lagoon in Malaysia so you can try to make some of them as this is when you get a really great view of the animals. The enclosures are on the small side but the animals seem well treated,

In addition to the enclosures, there is also a petting zoo area and a daily animal show.

While this area wasn’t as appealing to us as the Sunway Lagoon Theme Park rides and the Sunway Lagoon Water Park Malaysia, it is worth a walk through.

Sunway Lagoon Water Park

The Malaysia Sunway Lagoon Water Park Kuala Lumpur is lots of fun and the perfect way to cool down after a busy morning exploring the rest of the park.

There are fun and thrilling Sunway Lagoon slides as well as a big Sunway Lagoon surf beach where waves appear for an hour in the afternoon when we visited. You can try some actual Sunway Lagoon surfing here!

The Sunway Lagoon wave pool is a fun place to hang out when you want a rest from walking around. My favourite part is the sandy Sunway Lagoon beach here. There’s plenty of shade and facilities so you can relax and enjoy. If you need them, there are also plenty of choices for a locker Sunway Lagoon and plenty of Sunway Lagoon food if you get hungry.

The big downside is that, unfortunately, the waves only are turned on for an hour in the late afternoon. It seems such a waste! I like a wave pool and wish they ran this regularly throughout the day.

The slides are fun though – you can race your friends, shoot down 15 metre drops and go on Malaysia’s longest water ride on the Vuvuzela with rapids and a launch from a tower 11 storeys high. More relaxing is the lazy river ride although this was disappointing because the tubes to float in cost extra and there is no current to push you around. I don’t think the park planners understand what a lazy river ride is!

The Water Park Sunway Lagoon is probably the best part of the theme park and there are other pools in addition to the wave pool. For younger kids, there are also two water playgrounds. These look great but my 7 year old was disappointed as the slides don’t have water running down them – so they hurt to use. This seems like a silly oversight.

We did very much enjoy the slides though and went on most of them. The downside is that all but one require you to have a friend over 1.1 metres to go on them with. They require you to carry a two person raft to use and there must be two of you. An exception is the fabulous Vuvuzela which takes up to six riders, and they will sit you with other people.

There’s no easy way to buddy up with someone if you are travelling alone or in an odd number, and this can be quite annoying. This is also an issue in Sunway Lost Lagoon (coming up), and why I don’t recommend coming to Sunway Lagoon if you are alone. Since it’s primarily a water park, it’s going to be very disappointing if you are only able to go on a couple of slides.

Another fun attraction here is the 5D cinema. Make sure you only enter this in your swim wear as it is very wet with water coming from all angles!

I absolutely loved it but my kids under 8 have found it scary each time we have come, so I don’t recommend you take younger kids in. It’s lots of fun for older people though.

Sunway Lost Lagoon

The Sunway Lost Lagoon (previously Nickelodeon Lost Lagoon) is a must visit place on a Sunway Lagoon family day especially if you didn’t get wet enough at the Sunway Lagoon Water Theme Park! This was our favourite area with our family.

The Captain’s Splash is a particularly fun water playground, although if you have a young toddler, the Splish Splash playground area is shallower and may work better.

There are also Sunway Lagoon water slide options in this area which are more kid friendly (so less thrilling for adults), although there is also Monsoon 360 which takes you on a vertical free fall!

On our first visit, our only complaint was that we visited this area with one adult and two kids. One kid didn’t want to do the rides which meant our daughter needed to do them alone. She was big enough for this but the slides all required 2 or 4 person minimums.

My 7 year old and I on our most recent visit were able to find another twosome to go on the Jungle Fury which has the 4 person group size. It’s a shame the park staff don’t just sort this out for you though. For this ride, they wouldn’t even let you join the line unless you had a foursome.

In better news, there is a new roller coaster here that looks family friendly and lots of fun that was about to open when we visited. I look forward to trying it next time.

Sunway Lagoon Ticket Promotion

It’s easy to buy tickets on arrival at Sunway Lagoon but a much better option is to buy a Sunway Lagoon ticket online as it is much cheaper to buy a ticket through Klook before going.

Klook has the best Sunway Lagoon online ticket promotion.

You can also buy an express pass with your Sunway Lagoon cheap ticket on Klook (called a Quack Xpress) which gives you the right to skip the line on 20 attractions and rides. I recommend this if you are visiting on a weekend or during Malaysian and Singaporean school holidays.

Food And Drinks (And Other Costs)

You aren’t allowed to take food and drinks into the park and they do check bags. However, they had no issues with our water bottles.

There are many food and beverage outlets across the park and you never seem to be far from one, so it’s not hard to get something to eat. Prices aren’t crazy either for an amusement park.

You’ll also need to hire a locker which was a little crazy at RM25 for the day for a small locker which didn’t fit much.

Hotels Near Sunway Lagoon

As mentioned above, Sunway Lagoon is like its own city (and in fact the area is called Sunway City). There is a range of hotels right by the theme park and staying here is the best way to have an awesome time at the Sunway Lagoon Resort Kuala Lumpur.

There is the big Sunway Lagoon Pyramid Shopping Mall here with many restaurants as well as entertainment like ice skating and a cinema so it is a really easy place to stay as well.

How To Get To Sunway Lagoon

It is easy to get here thanks to the Sunway Lagoon location being a short drive from both Kuala Lumpur and the airport. There are more details on exactly how to get from KL to Sunway Lagoon and the airport below.

From the shopping mall, Sunway Pyramid to Sunway Lagoon, the main entrance is just a short walk. This is the same if you are staying at any of the hotels listed above. They are all connected to the shopping mall with escalators to take you down to one of the park entrances.

Kuala Lumpur To Sunway Lagoon

To get to Sunway Lagoon from KL, the easiest option is to take a Grab taxi or drive yourself. Any taxi in Kuala Lumpur should take you. There is plenty of Sunway Lagoon parking at the Sunway Pyramid shopping centre and at Sunway Hotel Resort.

You can also take public transport. Depending on where you are in Kuala Lumpur, this can take a lot longer and I recommend a taxi if you can afford it or the shuttle service here .

You can take the KTM Komuter train from KL Sentral to Setia Jaya station and then take a bus on the BRT Sunway Line to Sunway Lagoon. The train takes about 21 minutes and runs about every 15 minutes. The bus is quick.

KL Airport To Sunway Lagoon

From KL Airport, the best way to Sunway Lagoon is to take a taxi. There are coupon taxis that are easy to find and take. We took a Grab taxi on our most recent trip from the airport, and it cost RM65.

On public transport, it is possible to take a train or bus to KL Sentral ( more information about this here ) and then take the train and bus as recommended from KL above.

Final Thoughts

Our Sunway Lagoon Theme Park review found a very fun theme park! We had a great time exploring all the different lands.

The rides are fun but the highlights are definitely the water park areas at the main Water Park and Sunway Lost Lagoon. We could have easily spent the day in just those sections and they are the highlight.

The amusement park areas are good too, but nothing that special in my opinion. I recommend you go through them quickly and give yourself plenty of time for the water areas.

Sunway Lagoon is perfect for families and we enjoyed it a lot with our younger kids. I think it’s also great for adults, and we did skip many of the attractions because they weren’t suitable for our kids – but there was still plenty for us to do so this is not a complaint, more just shows how much there is for all ages!

The only really big problem with Sunway Lagoon is that only a couple of the water park slides are suitable for solo travellers. If you are solo or a group with an odd number or some smaller kids, this is going to be tricky. It’s a shame it’s not like water parks in other parts of the world where they will combine groups and people to make it work.

One day is enough to visit all the main attractions as long as you aren’t stuck in lines. If you are going on weekends or school holiday periods, you may want to consider getting the express pass. You can buy this on entry even when you have already purchased a discount ticket with Klook.

The Theme Park Sunway Lagoon is also very well presented with plenty of greenery which keeps things cool as well as pretty. It did not feel like we were in the middle of a huge metropolis at all. It’s also definitely worth taking a walk over the suspension bridge for views over the whole park.

All in all, this is a great theme park for all ages and we highly recommend it!

How Rachel Khong Conjures Worlds, in Her Books and Beyond

She wrote her much-anticipated second novel, “Real Americans,” while also creating the Ruby, a co-working collective for writers and other artists.

By the time Rachel Khong was finishing her latest novel, “Real Americans,” in 2022, interest in the book was so high that it sparked a 17-way bidding war between many of the country’s top publishing houses.

Among the interested parties was John Freeman, the writer, literary critic and executive editor at Knopf, who was teaching in Paris that summer and planning to fly to Sarajevo for a book festival. He learned Khong was on vacation in Istanbul, which he thought was sort of on his way (“I didn’t really look at a map,” Freeman confessed). Maybe the two could meet?

They got together at a cafe in Istanbul — a dog cafe, to be precise, where they were greeted at the door by a resident basset hound. The whole scene, he said, felt like a page out of the novel that Khong had been writing, “where you see people blown slightly sideways through life, through unexpected passages that they often choose very quickly.”

The meeting went so well, and the email Freeman sent afterward was so compelling (he offered to be her longtime editor, snowplow, hurricane lamp, map holder and in-house fire starter, among other things) that Khong signed a deal with Knopf five days later.

Due out on Tuesday, “Real Americans” is a remarkable tale about three generations of a family that spans seven decades, and shuttles from China during the Cultural Revolution to the publishing world of late ’90s Manhattan to an oyster farm in Washington state. Folded into it are doomed love stories, fancy parties, a subplot about epigenetics, Chinese people who look white and yummy treats (before becoming a novelist, Khong was executive editor of the beloved food magazine Lucky Peach).

The book also poses a dizzying array of questions: What does it mean to be American, and who gets to say who is one? How would we have turned out if we had grown up obscenely rich? How much can we blame our parents for who and what we become? Am I, maybe, racist? When scientists and techies say they can make a better human, should we run the other way?

It’s a tough novel to capture in a sentence or two, Khong concedes. “I appreciate that the publisher is just allowing it to be its own weird thing, and not trying to overly advertise it as one genre or something,” she said.

Born in Malaysia, Khong grew up in Southern California — Rancho Cucamonga, Indio, San Dimas, the “desert-y parts” of the state. “Growing up, she said, “I didn’t know any novelists.”

She went to Yale to pursue a degree in English, in the hopes of becoming a journalist. She got an internship with The Village Voice, where she wrote for the music section. After earning her M.F.A. in fiction at the University of Florida, she moved to San Francisco, where she joined the staff of Lucky Peach.

By then, Khong said, “I was sort of itching to do my own thing.” Between chef interviews and trips to Noma, she began writing her first novel.

Much of the early interest in “Real Americans” was probably because of the success of her debut novel, “ Goodbye, Vitamin .” Published in 2017, it was selected as a best book of the year by numerous media outlets, including NPR and Esquire. The New York Times Book Review called it “a quietly brilliant disquisition on family, relationships, and adulthood” and praised its prose (“startling in its spare beauty”) and humor.

Khong now lives in Los Angeles, and on a morning in March, she sat down in a coffeehouse in the Glassell Park neighborhood and talked about the importance of community and coffee shops, and how her second novel, seven years in the making, came to be.

Khong began “Real Americans” in December 2016, at the dawn of the Trump presidency. “I really wanted to write about the different meanings of the term ‘real American,’” she said.

The moment also made Khong assess the importance of community. Living in San Francisco’s Mission District at the time, she watched as artists fled a city once defined by them, driven out by high rents.

“San Francisco can be isolating when you haven’t found your people,” she said. “And obviously the dominant industry is tech, so it can feel alienating to be an artist, because the world around you is operating at a different speed, with different priorities.”

Not long after starting the novel, Khong began to think about creating a space that would provide a meeting place and a haven for fellow artists — one where everyone wasn’t wearing headphones and working on their latest startups.

She decided to make the collective for women and nonbinary writers and artists because “I was thinking about all of these groups of women that I really loved. I had a group I played mahjong with, a book club, a writing group. So I wanted to make a space for something like that to happen.”

Khong found a space in the Mission District and got to work. Invitations for membership went out, beginning with the writers, photographers, illustrators, and chefs she knew from her years at Lucky Peach. Soon enough, a core group of around 50 went to work picking the furniture and painting the place. Khong did much of the carpentry. She didn’t want the place to have the bland aesthetic of a Starbucks or WeWork.

“I missed the old San Francisco coffee shops that had crappy furniture and were kind of dirty, but that had a lot of character,” Khong said.

The result was the Ruby, a 9000+ square foot co-working collective and self-described “love letter to San Francisco.”

Once it was up and running, Khong planned events and workshops and occasionally worked the front desk. “Rachel is one of those people who are extremely talented at a lot of weird and random things,” said Meng Jin, the author of “Little Gods” and a longtime Ruby member. On Fridays, Khong invited an eclectic group of Bay Area-based female chefs to cater lunch; an upstairs living area hosted visiting writers and artists.

“She didn’t just open a space and say, Come on in, there’s extra laptop chargers or whatever,” said Shruti Swamy, the author of “A House is a Body” and a founding member. “She really thought about, how do I make the space welcoming to people?”

The Ruby soon became a magnet for area writers, including Gabriela Garcia (“Of Women and Salt”), R.O. Kwon (“The Incendiaries”) and Cecilia Rabess (“Everything’s Fine”). Artists met other artists at happy hours and lunches, and friendships grew. “Rachel is really good at bringing people together,” Jin said.

After creating a haven for others, however, Khong found the day-to-day running of it so distracting that when she had to find a quiet place to write “Real Americans,” she often ended up going to, yes, another cafe. “I do see the irony of that,” she said.

Khong is currently working on a third novel that’s about Malaysia, but isn’t set in Malaysia, she said. And she has already completed a collection of short stories, which Knopf will also publish.

As for the Ruby, that space is still going strong, even after Khong retired from running it in 2021 and moved to Los Angeles. Recent events have included a kimchi making class, watch parties for the PBS series “Hungry Planet,” and a night of readings by Vietnamese American women poets and writers.

“It’s really hard to communicate just how special that place was, and still is,” Swamy said. “The Ruby feels like something that a writer does: They make a world that they want to live in with their work. And Rachel not only did that in her work, she literally did it with the Ruby.”
