How we rate business NBN providers

Our ratings compare a range of NBN providers that offer business services, based on customer satisfaction as rated by Australians.

How many Australians do we survey for our ratings?

Canstar Blue surveyed 351 Australians with a current business NBN service for their feedback on NBN providers they’ve been signed up to. Respondents had to have a current fixed-line service account for a business and that business pays the bills.

  • The outcomes reported in these ratings are measured via accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics .

What criteria are used to rate business NBN providers?

Survey respondents are asked to rate their satisfaction with their business NBN provider from zero to 10 , with zero meaning extremely dissatisfied and 10 meaning extremely satisfied. Business NBN provider satisfaction is rated on the following criteria:

  • Overall satisfaction: measures consumer satisfaction with an NBN provider as an individual score, NOT the combined total of all criteria.
  • Network performance: the NBN service was fast and reliable.
  • Value for money: the price paid for the NBN service was reasonable for the performance experienced.
  • Client service: the NBN provider had good client service, provided good support, and was easy to get in touch with when needed.
  • Bill clarity: the NBN plan bill was easy to understand.
  • Clarity and flexibility of contract: the contract for the NBN service was clear and easy to understand and offered flexibility.

How do we determine the winner?

The winning brand is the brand that receives the highest Overall satisfaction rating . All the scores from the Overall satisfaction criteria are then combined and averaged to determine the overall winner.

  • Overall satisfaction is asked as a specific question and represents an individual measure, not a combined total of all criteria.
  • The brand with the highest number of five-star ratings within the supporting criteria will become the five-star recipient in overall satisfaction, and therefore win the award. If a clear leading brand still cannot be determined from the supporting criteria, joint winners will be declared.

Which business NBN providers do we rate?

To qualify in the ratings results, brands must have received a minimum of 30 responses to be included. Therefore, not all NBN providers offering business services will be compared in this survey. Brands rated in this survey are listed below in order of best overall satisfaction.

Best business NBN providers

Ratings result.

Taking out top spot in our ratings for the third year in a row, iiNet scored five stars across almost all categories, including value for money, client service, bill clarity, clarity and flexibility of contract and customer satisfaction. It scored four stars for network performance.

Editor’s notes

iiNet keeps its business NBN offerings fairly simple with NBN 50 or NBN 100 speeds and your choice between three plans with different data and call inclusions. You’re also able to choose a 24-month plan or no-contract month-to-month plan, along with the option to BYO modem or add-on a modem (which will incur an upfront cost if you go no-contract).

In addition to your internet plan, iiNet offers the option to add on business VoIP international call packs and business phones, and also offers separate BizPhone packages which include devices and call packs.

Optus took out second with four stars for overall satisfaction, along with network performance and client service. It scored five stars in the remaining categories — value for money, bill clarity and clarity and flexibility of contract.

Optus offers a wider range of NBN speeds for its business plans, with NBN 50, 100, 250 and 1000 speed tiers available (actual speeds experienced may differ). You’ll then have the option to choose from a basic plan (which includes a modem) or its Business Internet Plus Professional plan which, in addition to the modem, includes services like a WiFi booster and WiFi security.

Rounding out our ratings was Telstra, with three stars for overall satisfaction and client service. It scored four stars for value for money, bill clarity and clarity and flexibility of contract, but scored five stars for network performance — the only one of the three providers to do so.

Telstra’s business plans are fairly straightforward, with one plan offering NBN 50 speeds and another plan with NBN 100 speeds. Both plans include a modem with 4G mobile backup during outages, unlimited calls to standard Australian landlines and mobile, unlimited data and advanced cyber security.

Other business NBN providers

The above three mentioned providers aren’t the only telcos offering NBN plans for businesses. If you’re looking for an internet plan to service your business, here’s a list of other providers offering NBN business plans:

  • Aussie Broadband
  • Southern Phone

Choosing an NBN plan for your business

Having a fast and reliable NBN service is an essential part of running a business these days, with 61% of our survey respondents stating that fast internet is crucial to their business. With 22% claiming to regularly suffer from slow or unreliable internet and almost a quarter (24%) claiming that an internet outage affected their business, finding a quality and reliable service is a must.

When you’re looking at business NBN services, it’s important to ensure you’re choosing a plan that will best suit your needs.

Much like your home internet service, having the right speed tier is essential to choosing the best NBN plan for your business. You should have an idea of how your business will use the internet, such as for video conferencing along with downloading and uploading large files, in addition to how many people will be using the internet. This will give you an idea of which speed tier will suit your business needs the best.

Add-ons and extras

You’ll also want to consider if you need any extras or add-ons to your internet services. This could include a modem, call packs and/or landline phones, internet security, dedicated customer service and more.

Not all providers will offer these services, and some may offer more add-ons and extras than others. Consider how important these services are to your business and compare providers to find the deal that will get you the best value for your money.

Frequently Asked Questions

About this research.

Canstar Blue surveyed 2,022 Australian small to medium-sized business owners or key decision-makers (i.e. the key decision-maker for the business) across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction, via ISO 26362 accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who currently have a business broadband plan and the business pays the bills – in this case, 351 people.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then by mean overall satisfaction. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.

What are the best business nbn plans, factors to consider when choosing a business nbn plan, what is the best nbn speed for your business, what are the main features of a business internet plan, what about business mobile broadband plans.

Business NBN plans are adept at handling numerous online users at once. Your business stands to gain significantly from:

  • Dedicated support teams
  • Advanced security software
  • Backup networks

For remote work or internal website hosting, static IPs are at your disposal, too.

Tailored for small business owners and operators, NBN business plans cater to the unique needs of your enterprise. Owning a valid Australian Business Number (ABN) qualifies your business for an NBN business plan.

While not obligatory, opting for a business NBN plan can prove advantageous for various reasons:

  • Swift response to client needs
  • Seamless online collaboration, especially with remote teams and contractors
  • Effortless access to cloud services
  • Prompt resolution of Internet issues impacting your business

While small businesses can use residential NBN plans, the added features of priority support and quick response times may justify the incremental cost for those seeking exemplary Internet service.

Running a business requires a fast and reliable NBN service. When exploring business NBN options, it's crucial to choose a plan that fits your needs. Two important factors to consider when choosing a business plan include:

Similar to your home Internet, picking the right speed tier is vital for the best NBN plan for your business. Consider how your business uses the Internet—whether for video conferencing, large file transfers, or by how many people. This will help you determine the most suitable speed tier.

Add-ons and extras

Think about whether you need any additional features for your Internet service, like a modem , call packs, landline phones, Internet security, or dedicated customer service.

Not all providers offer the same extras, so assess their importance to your business and compare providers to find the best value for your money.

Your speed needs vary based on your company's size and Internet usage. While an average Australian might find NBN 50 sufficient for personal use, small businesses may opt for NBN 100 to guarantee faster speeds. Here is our take on the best speed for your NBN business plan:

NBN 50 - Best for sole traders

  • Maximum download speeds: 50Mbps
  • Maximum upload speeds: 20Mbps
  • Team size: 1 person

As per the ACCC, the NBN 50 speed tier stands out as the preferred choice for personal use in Australia. Its download speeds efficiently support video conferencing, and its ample upload speed allows for smooth use of cloud storage services like Google Drive or Dropbox.

NBN 100 - Best for small business

  • Maximum download speeds: 100Mbps
  • Maximum upload speeds: 40Mbps
  • Team size: 3–5 people

The NBN 100 speed tier is often ideal for households with four or more individuals, and this extends to small business users as well. Yet, for businesses engaging in frequent video conferencing or uploading substantial data, it's crucial to focus on upload speeds when evaluating plans.

NBN 100 plans may offer either 20Mbps or 40Mbps upload speeds. While a NBN 100/40 plan might have a slightly higher cost, it proves valuable when multiple individuals are concurrently participating in Zoom meetings.

NBN 250 - Best for heavy usage

  • Maximum download speeds: 250Mbps
  • Maximum upload speeds: 25Mbps
  • Team size : 5–7 people

Greater numbers of users result in diminished bandwidth for sharing. With an NBN 250 plan, you can simultaneously download large files and engage in video conferencing without any hitches.

The determining factor, however, is your connection type. For your business to benefit from this, it must be connected to the NBN through FTTP or HFC, though this is not universally available across all regions of Australia.

NBN 1000 - Best for larger teams

  • Maximum download speeds : 1000Mbps
  • Maximum upload speeds: 50Mbps
  • Team size: 25–30

The NBN 1000 stands as the highest-speed option in Australia, exclusively accessible to businesses equipped with either FTTP or specific HFC connections.

With an NBN 1000 plan, expansive teams of up to 30 individuals can seamlessly collaborate, download, and upload files without encountering any issues.

For businesses with a workforce exceeding 30 employees, reaching out to your service provider to ask about a customised NBN enterprise plan could see you getting plan options separate from the usual offering.

Features of business Internet plans can vary among providers, but generally, you can expect the following:

While regular IP addresses change each time you connect, a static IP remains constant. Many providers offer it for free with business Internet plans.

Why it matters: Static IPs are crucial for hosting internal websites or for remote worker access to your network (via VPN, etc.).

Additional support and priority

Business plans often include extra support, such as a 24/7 helpline or a dedicated account manager.

Why it matters: Residential plan support can involve long wait times. Priority support ensures quicker issue resolution, getting you back online and back to business faster.

Enhanced Service Level Agreement (eSLA)

Providers with eSLAs invest in extra support from NBN Co, extending those benefits to you.

eSLAs outline a timeframe and process for problem resolution, along with consequences if service standards aren't met. Residential plans lack these guarantees.

Why it matters: eSLAs help ensure a swift recovery for your business after encountering a problem.

Consider opting for a business mobile broadband plan if you're a sole trader, remote worker, or someone who needs Internet access on the go in various settings.

Here are some advantages of a business mobile broadband plan over an NBN plan:

  • 5G access: Enjoy potentially faster speeds than NBN with the availability of 5G.
  • Portability: Work from diverse locations like the beach, cafe, or remote sites since it's not a fixed connection. Compact modems easily fit in your pocket or work bag.
  • Data sharing: Some providers offer data sharing for businesses, allowing you to share data with your team members.

However, there are a few drawbacks to consider:

  • Limited 5G network: While 5G is expanding, it may not be as widely accessible as 4G, especially in major cities.
  • Less data: Some mobile broadband plans offer less data compared to an NBN plan at a higher cost.
  • Device repayments: Although not overly expensive monthly, device repayments for a mobile broadband modem can add an extra cost over a 12-, 24-, or 36-month repayment period.

Compare NBN business plans

For those operating a home-based business requiring faster upload speeds and reliable uptime, opting for an NBN Business plan proves to be the optimal choice. The pricing of a business NBN plan hinges on your Internet usage for daily team activities.

If your tasks primarily involve web surfing, email correspondence, team communication, and handling small-sized files, a home Internet connection may suffice. However, if you frequently download large files, engage in HD teleconferences, and have daily client meetings, a business NBN connection with a minimum speed of 50Mbps would be more suitable.

How does a business NBN enterprise Ethernet plan differentiate itself from a regular business NBN plan?

The NBN enterprise Ethernet plan is tailored for sizable enterprises or those in need of ultra-fast upload and download speeds, reaching up to 1000Mbps. In contrast, a business NBN plan closely mirrors the structure of a residential NBN plan in terms of speed tiers and overall performance, albeit with added features and enhanced support.

How do I get into the NBN business?

Switching business services to the NBN can be a tedious task and will require you to have a different level of service getting a home internet plan. To move your business services over to the NBN, get in touch with Compare Broadband today.

Do NBN business plans surpass residential plans in speed?

In essence, no. NBN business plans provide identical speed and performance to their residential counterparts. On a network level, there's no differentiation according to NBN Co. Nevertheless, individual providers may exhibit faster typical download speeds for business Internet plans compared to residential plans, though this fluctuates between providers. The primary distinction lies in the additional features that retailers extend to business NBN customers, such as a static IP, priority service, and service guarantees—features not extended to residential customers.

How do I choose an NBN Provider for my business?

There are 5 factors to consider when choosing an NBN provider for business use: availability, speed, cost, type of connection, and reliability. For businesses, reliability is the most important factor when choosing an NBN provider. Unreliable internet can be stressful and counterproductive.

Do NBN plans include phone calls?

Some NBN Business broadband providers offer calls and a VoIP telephone at no additional cost. Some may charge an additional $5-$10 per month.

The National Broadband Network (NBN) operates for both residential and business customers. While the underlying network is the same, the requirements for business plans are very different from what home broadband users need.

With a business plan, you're connecting multiple people. You may be hosting a website, phone networks or complex applications. You're often sharing enormous files between different sites. So when the NBN becomes available at your premises, there are key issues you need to consider before you sign up for a plan.

Assess the speed you'll need

Young Asian business people working with laptops.

A specific element of speed to consider carefully: upload speeds. Upload speeds matter much more in a business context. If you're regularly conducting video conferences or sharing large files, then decent upload speeds will make a big difference.

The cheapest business NBN plans only offer an upload speed of 20Mbps. If you pay more, you can choose 40, 100, 200 or 400Mbps options. However, those higher-speed options are typically only available if the NBN option available at your location is fibre-to-the-premises.

See what other features you require

Female colleagues discussing coding problem

  • Telephone services. Since the NBN replaces the existing copper telephone network, you'll need to switch your business landline services as well. Depending on your needs, that might require new IP telephony handsets, or might it be delivered through softphone applications running on a laptop or mobile phone.
  • Static IP. Many businesses require a static (fixed) IP address, which makes it possible to host sites and applications and can be a useful security enhancement for controlling access to network resources.
  • Guaranteed uptime. Standard NBN plans are generally "best effort", meaning that the service should always be available but that outages can happen. If you need higher levels of reliability, you can pay more for guaranteed uptime. Note, however, that you'll never get 100% uptime (networks always need maintenance, for starters).
  • Additional software and services. Business NBN providers may offer extra services, such as access to cloud-based software packages for email or customer relationship management (CRM). Since these are also often paid for on a month-by-month basis, this can be useful, but you should compare standalone pricing and support services offered before committing.

Check the contract and support terms carefully

Male colleagues chatting in office.

Also, be clear about which support options are available. Cheaper services may have more limited options, with restricted hours for accepting calls. Most business providers will have a 24/7 option, but this will invariably cost more.

Enhanced service level agreements: The eSLA explained

Group of casual business people and entrepreneurs having an informal meeting

A key element underpinning any business NBN SLA is the enhanced service level agreement, known as the eSLA, which NBN Co offers to its providers to receive faster responses when faults are raised. Without an eSLA, faults can only be raised on weekdays and may not be fixed until 5pm the following business day. The eSLA guarantees faster responses to NBN problems and quicker fixes. It's a popular choice for providers offering business plans.

The table below shows the different eSLA options offered by NBN Co. Remember, the eSLA timings relate to communications between NBN Co and providers around faults, and how quickly the faults are rectified. The response times in individual contracts between businesses and providers will vary depending on the provider. However, the eSLA timings do provide a useful baseline when comparing providers.

Our goal is to create the best possible product, and your thoughts, ideas and suggestions play a major role in helping us identify opportunities to improve.

Important information about this website

Advertiser disclosure.

finder.com.au is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stands by our editorial principles

We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.

Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.

How we make money

We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.

Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.

Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product. You can learn more about how we make money .

Sorting and Ranking Products

When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.

Frequently asked questions

Do i have to be a telstra customer to take up a bundle plan.

Yes, to take up a bundle plan you must have an Essential or Premium mobile or data plan with Telstra.

How many Bundle Plans can I add to my account?

If you’re an Upfront plan customer, you can add up to 5 Bundle Plans in total, regardless of the number of Essential and Premium Plans you have active on your account. If you’re not an Upfront plan customer, you can add 5 Bundle Plans to each Essential and Premium mobile or data plan you have active on your account.

How can I check if I’m on an eligible plan for bundling?

To check if you’re on a mobile plan that allows bundling and data sharing, message us.

Can you keep the same mobile number when you move to a Bundle Plan?

Yes, you can move an existing Telstra number from our Basic, Essential, or Premium plans to a Bundle Plan, provided there is at least one other Essential or Premium plan on the same account. We'll take care of the number transfer process remotely once you have purchased your Bundle Plan.

Can I add a new phone and a new SIM bundle plan at the same time?

Yes, you can purchase a new mobile phone with Telstra first, then add a Mobile Bundle Plan. Browse our range of latest mobiles .

What mobile plans can I add Bundle Plans to?

You can add Bundle Plans to Telstra Upfront Essential and Upfront Premium business mobile plans .

You can also add bundles to older Telstra mobile essential and premium, plans however you will not be able to share data between plans on the one account.

If I downgrade or cancel my mobile or data plan, what happens to associated Bundle Plans?

You’re eligible to add on up to 5 Bundle Plans if you’re on an Essential or Premium Mobile plan. If you cancel or change your Essential or Premium Mobile plan you will no longer be eligible for Bundle Plans and existing Mobile Bundle Plans or Data Bundle Plans will be moved to an in-market plan. We’ll be in touch to let you know about these changes.

Can I share data if I’m on an older Telstra mobile plan?

No. While you can add a Bundle Plan onto an older mobile plan service, you can't share data between those phones. This is because our older mobile plans don’t support data sharing.

To check if you’re on a mobile plan that allows bundling and data sharing,  message us .

Things you need to know

Your month-to-month plan may change (including price and inclusions). With no lock-in, you can change your plan once a month or leave. If you leave, just pay out your device, accessories or services in full.

Telstra currently offers 5G in select areas and is progressively rolling it out to other areas. In non-5G coverage areas, you’ll automatically switch to our 4G or 3G.

Check Coverage using our Coverage Maps .

The Telstra Mobile Network offers 4GX in all capital CBDs and selected suburban and regional areas and is progressively rolling out to more places. In other coverage areas around Australia, you’ll automatically switch to our fastest available 4G or 3G.

Typical download speeds in 4GX areas are 5 -300Mbps with category 16 devices, 5-200Mbps with category 11 devices, 5-150Mbps with category 9 devices, 2-100Mbps with category 6 devices, and 2-75Mbps with category 4 devices. Outside 4GX areas, you will switch to our fastest available 4G or 3G speeds. Speeds vary for reasons like location, distance from base stations, terrain, user numbers, hardware/software configuration, download source and upload destination.

Data plan is required. 4GX available in 4GX enabled areas.

Month-to-month plans

If you cancel your service, you will receive a pro rata refund for the remainder of your month. If you have any device, accessory or service add-ons attached to your plan, you will have to pay any remaining amount owing on your next bill.

Device Payment Contract

You must have an eligible Telstra Data Plan in order to have a Device Payment Contract. If you cancel your Device Payment Contract early, cancel your data plan during the device payment term or move to an ineligible data plan during the payment term, you’ll need to pay out your device, in full. Device discounts do not apply to cancelled Device Payment Contracts.

Talk, Text and Data

Calls to standard Australian numbers are at a pay-as-you-go rate of $1 per minute, charged in 1 minute blocks or part thereof. SMS/MMS to standard Australian numbers are charged at a pay-as-you-go rate of 25c for SMS and 55c for MMS per message sent, per recipient.

No excess data charges in Australia

Once you exceed your included data allowance, your speed will be capped at 1.5Mbps, and slowed further in busy periods. This means it is not suitable for HD video or high speed applications and means that some webpages, videos, social media content and files may take longer to load, but you can still stream video in standard definition, listen to music, browse the web and access social media, even if the experience is slower sometimes.

No Excess Data Charges – Existing Services

Any existing shareable services on your account with Extra Data will be automatically migrated to No Excess Data Charges when you take up this plan.

International Roaming

To use your service overseas, you can purchase an International Day Pass at $5 per day in New Zealand, or $10 per day in more than 70 eligible countries. Day Pass includes 200MB of data to use per day as well as unlimited talk and text. Usage expires daily based on AEST. If you go over your 200MB, we'll add an additional 500MB for $10 for use within 31 days. A Day Pass is triggered whenever a call is made or received, an SMS is sent or if any mobile data is used in an eligible country.

If you’re travelling to a country where our International Day Pass isn’t available, you can still use your device at pay-as-you-go rates.

For more info  View eligible destinations .

Annual Price Review

Our mobile and data plans include an annual price review and may increase in line with CPI in July each year. CPI measures household inflation and is released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. We'll use the CPI for full year to March quarter and any increase will be rounded to the nearest dollar and occurs within your July billing cycle. We'll let you know before any changes take effect.

NBN Speed Guidelines

1 Maximum Off Peak Speed is the maximum speed that the majority of customers can expect during other times. The actual speed you will experience depends on a number of factors including your access type, demand on the network, local conditions such as internet traffic, your line condition, your hardware and software, the data source or destination and your location which can interfere with reception and speed.

2 Typical Evening Speed is the typically expected experience between 7 pm and 11 pm which is the busy time for Internet traffic. It is not a guaranteed minimum speed.

3 Speeds vary for Fixed Wireless and Fibre to the Node services. See Key Fact Sheet for more information.

A conference allows a group of people to participate in phone call. When users leave or arrive they can be announced, a maximum number of participants can also be set.

Best NBN plans April 2024: our expert picks

How we choose

NBN logo

1. The list in brief 2. Best provider 3. Major telco plans 4. How we choose 5. NBN FAQ

The best NBN plans will likely be different for different households, which is why we regularly compare the vast majority of plans each month from over 30 providers, to determine which ones are worth your money and which should be avoided.

Once you know your NBN connection type , you can quickly peruse your choice of options, which are determined by the speed tier you're after. You could be after a modest 50Mbps plan for you and your partner, or you could need a 250Mbps plan to keep you and the whole family connected.

After recent NBN Co updates that hope to get faster speeds into more Aussie homes by the end of 2025, you may opt for a free fibre upgrade or switch NBN providers to one that offers better speeds. Whatever your case may be, we're sure to have a recommendation worth your while.

For the most part, we've seen most ISPs offering introductory discounts for the first six months for new customers and occasionally, you may find the entire first year gets some money knocked off. Some providers even offer ongoing discounts if you bundle your NBN plan with other services, like utilities or mobile phone plans, so it might be worth checking them out if you're looking to get more bang for your buck.

At Tom's Guide, we've compared NBN plans across all-sized telcos (even smaller ones, too) to find our top recommendations for different download speed tiers, best overall value and more this month.

The best NBN plans in Australia

Below you'll find a roundup of our picks for the best NBN plans in Australia right now. We've made selections covering all speed tiers, specific uses and budgets, to help you find the NBN plan best suited to your household.

Spintel logo landscape white background

Best value NBN plan (NBN 100)

• AU$69p/m (for six months, then AU$79.95p/m) • First year: AU$893.70 • Ongoing: AU$959.40

Spintel is our top pick as the best-value NBN plan, as it's highly rated by customers and competitively priced compared to other providers. Across all NBN 100 plans, the offering has the lowest first year price of a modest AU$893.70 and has one of the cheapest ongoing costs after the introductory period.

When compared to Flip, our previous provider of the month, Spintel's NBN 100 offering is less than AU$1 more over the first year, which is a pretty minimal difference in our opinion. Also, when compared to the average cost of a 100Mbps plan currently standing at AU$91.27, Spintel's plan will save you a whopping AU$22.27 that you can spend elsewhere.

Aussie Broadband logo with text

Best NBN plan for gaming (NBN 100)

• AU$95p/m • First year: AU$1,140 • Ongoing: AU$1,140

Aussie Broadband is highly recommended by Aussie gamers, and it makes strong claims about how well its network routing is optimised for gaming. This includes establishing “international transit links into major gaming regions such as the USA and South East Asia”. Essentially, Aussie Broadband will endeavour to find the quickest route between you and popular gaming servers.

Aussie Broadband’s NBN 100 plan advertises 98Mbps download speeds during the busy evening hours and 16Mbps upload speeds. You also get unlimited downloads, so you can rest assured that a 130GB game download won’t put you over your cap.

Exetel logo with light grey background

Best NBN plan for streaming (NBN 100)

• AU$68.99p/m (for six months, then AU$84.99p/m) • First year: AU$923.88 • Ongoing: AU$1,109.88

Exetel is our top pick for the best NBN provider for streaming this month, largely due to its affordability, good plan speeds during peak busy hours, and its Speed Boost Days, which allows users to hijack their service to the next speed tier for five days every month.

A recent ACCC report also found that Exetel delivered over 100% of advertised plan speeds, making it ideal for streaming 4K movies and concurrent video and music streams.

Superloop company logo

Best NBN plan for heavy users (NBN 1000)

• AU$65p/m (for 5 months, then AU$85p/m) • First year: AU$920 • Ongoing: AU$1,020

Superloop's 1,000Mbps NBN plan is our pick for heavier users. It advertises 700Mbps typical evening speeds and it’s affordable — by NBN 1000 speed tier standards — making it that much easier to get faster speeds for a decent price.

Not only that, Superloop gives you five free Speed Boost Days every month to increase your speed to the next tier. But if you’re already getting theoretical speeds of 600Mbps, you may not even need them.

You will need either an FTTP or HFC connection to take advantage of this speed tier, but as more homes get connected to faster fibre everyday, this is becoming less exclusive.

Flip NBN logo

Best NBN plan for light users (NBN 25)

• AU$44p/m (for 6 months, then AU$54.90p/m) • First year: AU$593.40 • Ongoing: AU$658.80 Flip's NBN 25 is perfect for light internet users. It's the cheapest 25Mbps NBN plan in the country, with an introductory offer of AU$44 a month for your first six months, before increasing to an ongoing rate of AU$54.90 each month. You also get unlimited data and the maximum 25Mbps speeds during the busier evening hours.

Best NBN plan for large households — 4+ people (NBN 250)

• AU$75p/m (for 6 months, then AU$85.95p/m) • First year: AU$965.70 • Ongoing: AU$1,031.40 Spintel has recently dropped the mother of all deals on its NBN 250 plan, with the price matching the average of an NBN 100 plan. Saving AU$10.95p/m for the first six months — that's AU$65.70 — this 250Mbps Spintel plan is perfect for larger households with multiple devices. Advertising 211Mbps during the typical evening hours of 7pm to 11pm, this plan will offer plenty of internet (and speed) to keep a household online and entertained.

While it’s unlikely to reach the theoretical maximum of 250Mbps that this speed tier offers, we don't think many will miss the 39Mbps, but we understand that some consumers expect to get what they pay for. Also, keep in mind that this NBN 250 plan is only available for addresses with FTTP and HFC connections.

Which is the best NBN provider?

Image

Best NBN provider this month — Superloop

Superloop is our top-rated pick for best NBN provider this month—and for good reason, too. Not only does it offer some highly attractive introductory rates, but it is also an excellent choice for heavy internet users, gamers, and streamers alike. The ACCC's latest quarterly report claimed that the telco has the lowest latency among the telcos observed, with an average latency of 9.8ms during the busy evening hours.

Best NBN plans: major telcos

When searching for NBN plans, you may be inclined to automatically look at the three major telcos of Telstra, Optus and TPG. But most of the time, these three are usually among the most expensive options. However, if you do sign with any of the major three telcos, you are likely to get a reliable and high-performing service, and this is backed up by reporting data from the ACCC.

What's more, Telstra and Optus often throw in additional perks for free. Such benefits include modems with 4G data backup, allowing you to stay connected if your fixed line NBN connection suffers an outage, as well as free trials to various streaming services.

If you’re looking for an NBN plan from Telstra, Optus or TPG these are our plan recommendations:

Best Telstra NBN plan for most people

Why you can trust Tom's Guide Our writers and editors spend hours analyzing and reviewing products, services, and apps to help find what's best for you. Find out more about how we test, analyze, and rate.

TelstraNBN 100Unlimited dataNo lock-in contractAU$100p/m

Telstra | NBN 100 | Unlimited data | No lock-in contract | AU$100p/m (for 6 months, then AU$110/month)

Telstra’s 100Mbps NBN plan is the most expensive right now, based on our research using data from WhistleOut. As this page has already shown, you can get much cheaper by shopping around. But, as we've also said, you do get additional perks with Telstra, such as free trials to various streaming services, including Spotify and Binge.

Total minimum cost: AU$95 | Total cost for first year: AU$1,230

Best Optus NBN plan for most people

Optus | NBN 100 | Unlimited data | No lock-in contract | AU$75 p/m

Optus | NBN 100 | Unlimited data | No lock-in contract | AU$75 p/m (for six months then AU$99 p/m)

This epic Optus deal is one of the best we've seen from the big three telcos in a while. The current introductory offer will save you AU$24 p/m for the first six months — that's a saving of AU$144 — before the price increases. Optus' NBN 100 plan currently represents better value compared to its NBN 50 plan in our opinion, which is currently the same price as the 100Mbps offering.

Do note, though, that the plan will increase to AU$99 p/m after the discount period ends, which is higher than the average cost of this speed tier of AU$91.15 p/m.

This plan's minimum cost is AU$381, as it includes the modem; however, you won't pay any additional fees for the modem if you remain connected for 36 months or more.

Minimum monthly cost: AU$381 (including modem fee) | Total cost for first 12 months: AU$1,044 | Yearly cost after discount: AU$1,188 (excluding modem)

Best TPG NBN plan for most people

TPGNBN 100Unlimited dataNo lock-in contractAU$79.99p/m

TPG | NBN 100 | Unlimited data | No lock-in contract | AU$79.99p/m (for 6 months, then AU$89.99)

While it's technically the cheapest of the big three, TPG's 100Mbps NBN plan has been on the receiving end of a AU$5/month increase within the past 12 months. We feel we could recommend it even more had this increase have not been made. Regardless, TPG does advertise good speeds, even during the busy evening hours, and there's no early exit fee. You do need to pay an upfront cost for a modem if you need one. And as we mentioned earlier, there are no additional free inclusions on a TPG NBN plan.

Total minimum cost: AU$179.94 (includes modem) | Total cost for first year: AU$1,019.88

How we judge the best NBN plans

To select our picks for the best NBN plans, our experts consider and weigh the following key aspects for fixed-line NBN plans:

Speed : Each speed tier indicates the maximum speed available, for example, an NBN 50 plan is able to reach download speeds of 50Mbps. However, not every provider will be able to reach the maximum speed available during the busiest evening hours, which fall between 7–11pm. NBN providers are required to report their typical evening speeds, so we first look for plans that advertise the maximum speeds during these busier hours. For the Ultrafast NBN 1000 plan, no provider currently advertises the theoretical maximum. The fastest speed we've seen advertised so far is Telstra's 700Mbps.

Price : Price is perhaps the most important factor in our decision making. We initially look for the cheapest plans across each speed tier, and then if we don't think the download speed is worth it, i.e. it's too slow, we'll then look to the next cheapest to see how it compares. The majority of NBN providers offer 6 month introductory discounts on their plans, and these prices can sometimes be deceptive. This is why we give you information relating to the yearly cost you can expect to pay once that introductory discount expires.

Data allowance : The majority of fixed-line NBN plans offer unlimited data, so in all but exceptional cases, we only recommend plans with an unlimited data allowance.

Performance : The ACCC monitors the performance of some of the top NBN providers in Australia, so we always take this data into account when making our recommendations. If the ACCC doesn’t monitor a particular internet provider, we also look at feedback provided by real users on sites such as Whirlpool .

Perks : We consider perks as nice to have, but they carry less weight compared to other factors in our decision making. Some examples of perks include Australian-based customer support, or the ability to include a home phone service. Other perks can enhance the performance of your service, such as the ability to bump your plan’s regular speed up to the next available tier on five days of your choosing – a feature offered by Exetel and Superloop .

What is the NBN?

The NBN (National Broadband Network) is Australia’s national infrastructure for phone and internet services. The government initiative was first proposed in 2007 and was deemed to be 90% complete in 2020. NBN services are now available to virtually all Australians in some form, whether it be a fixed-line service, facilitated by optical fibre cables or a fixed-wireless service, which uses towers emitting 4G signals.

Which NBN speed is best for me?

NBN offers six main speed tiers for consumer connections. There are official names for these (ranging from ‘Basic 1’ to ‘Ultrafast’) but most providers refer to them as a number, relating to the expected download speed. The speed of internet service you can achieve at your property is determined by the physical connection type you have.

The six main NBN speed tiers available are:

NBN 12 (Basic 1): 12Mbps download | 1Mbps upload | All NBN connection types | 1 user | NBN 12 is best suited for a single-person household. Even then, the 12Mbps maximum download speed is only going to be good for browsing the internet, sending emails and watching video content in up to 1080p quality. If you want to stream 4K video content (or to multiple devices simultaneously) on services like Netflix, then NBN 12 likely won't be fast enough.

NBN 25 (Basic II): 25Mbps download | 5Mbps upload | All NBN connection types | 1-2 users | With NBN 25, up to two people can comfortably browse the internet at the same time and stream a range of music and video content in up to 1080p quality. You may be able to watch 4K streaming video, but only on a single device at a time.

NBN 50 (Standard): 50Mbps download | 20Mbps upload | All NBN connection types | 2-4 users | The most popular NBN speed tier, NBN 50 is designed to allow up to four users to browse, stream and download content with ease. NBN 50 is also a good speed tier for people needing to use video chat a lot at home. NBN 50 is the most popular NBN plan in Australia.

NBN 100 (Fast): 100Mbps download | 20Mbps upload | All NBN connection types | 5+ users |  Well suited to 4K video streaming and allowing for multiple users to be online at the same time.

NBN 250 (Superfast): 250Mbps download | 25Mbps upload | FTTP, HFC connections | 5+ users | Incredibly fast internet speeds that allows multiple users to stream 4K video content and download large files at the same time.

NBN 1000 (Ultrafast): 1000Mbps download | 50Mbps upload | FTTP, HFC connection | 5+ users | Currently the fastest possible NBN speed tier, although very few telcos actually achieve the full 1000Mbps download speeds, especially during the evening.

What does 'typical evening speed' mean?

You'll see the term ' typical evening speed' advertised against all NBN plans, and it refers to the average download speed you can expect to realistically achieve during the busy evening hours of 7pm - 11pm.

Different providers of NBN plans may advertise different typical evening speeds, so be sure to keep an eye out for this figure when searching for a new plan. On speed tiers ranging up to NBN 100he typical evening speed figure is less important than it used to be.

The speeds realistically achievable in Australia have improved in recent years, and you'll now find some internet service providers will advertise the maximum possible speed of the NBN tier you're on. In some cases, your evening speed could actually exceed the theoretical maximum limit of your tier.

Which NBN provider is the cheapest?

The NBN speed tier you're considering will determine which NBN provider is the cheapest. A fast NBN 100 plan will naturally cost you a fair amount each month. But within these fast NBN plans, you can find some good deals that will save you money.

The cheapest NBN plan available in Australia is Flip Connect's NBN 12 plan, which costs AU$34p/m for the first 6 months, which then increases to AU$44.90p/m.

Head to our best NBN deals page for a regularly updated list of popular, affordable internet plans.

Is there an alternative to NBN?

Yes, there is, in the form of 5G home internet . 5G home internet uses a modem to connect to nearby 5G mobile towers, which then delivers internet around your home via Wi-Fi. It can have multiple benefits, including being easy to install, achieving superfast speeds and being competitively priced.

Other NBN alternatives include satellite internet for people who live in rural and remote parts of Australia and can't get connected to a fixed-line NBN service.

Important service and equipment information

Optus Email: Optus email addresses will be disconnected when moving from a plan that includes broadband to a phone only plan.

Serviceability: Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee connection until we successfully install your service.

Priority Assistance: We do not offer Priority Assistance. A provider who does is Telstra.

Equipment and battery back-up: Equipment supplied requires mains power, which may not be suitable if you have a serious illness or condition and require an uninterrupted telephone or data service. We do not support battery back-up functionality for nbn services and in most cases, nbn services will not function during a power failure.

Some equipment like back-to-base and medical alarms and other devices may not be compatible with the nbn or the 4G backup service and are not tested by us or supported on the Optus nbn. You should contact your device supplier to find out if your device will work before connecting to the nbn network.

Accessibility: For information about products and services we offer for customers with different disabilities, please see: https://www.optus.com.au/about/inclusion-diversity/differing-abilities/disability-services .

Use of Optus supplied modem and nbn services: Optus is required by law to confirm your nbn service is working.  We may not be able to confirm this if you do not use the modem that Optus supplies you. If you use a modem not supplied by Optus, that is, your own modem, we won’t be able to confirm your voice service (if applicable) is working so it may not be operational, and you will need to inform Optus of any issues with your nbn service before those issues will be rectified. If we supply you with an Optus modem, you should use the Optus supplied modem to ensure your Optus Service is operating optimally.

If you don’t plug in your modem, we will auto-complete your order 10 days after we have reminded you to plug in your modem.

Billing will commence once we confirm your nbn broadband service is operational or once we’ve automatically completed your order (whichever occurs first).

nbn FTTC and HFC:

If you are:

  • an Optus nbn FTTC customer and fail to plug in your nbn equipment within 30 working days,
  • an Optus nbn HFC customer and fail to plug in your nbn equipment within 60 working, from your nbn equipment delivery date, your order may be cancelled automatically.

Speed & Video Quality: Many factors affect speed and video quality such as internet traffic, your line condition, your hardware and software, the data source or destination, your location and the number of simultaneous video streams or other downloads you have running over your connection.

Optus supplied equipment

Optus supplied Modem:

  • The Optus supplied modem that you will receive will depend on the Business Internet plan you select. Each Optus supplied modem will have different functionality and features.
  • Your Optus supplied modem must only be used at your business broadband service address.
  • You must ensure your Optus supplied modem remains connected to your fixed line (for example, via the nbn network terminating device) and you must not otherwise knowingly or recklessly interfere with your Optus supplied modem or business wiring in a way that may disable your fixed line business internet or phone service.
  • If Optus provides an Optus Ultra WiFi Modem with your plan on a Device Payment Plan, Optus will cover the cost of the modem if you remain connected for 36 months.
  • The SIM supplied with the modem provides 4G Mobile Backup and must not be removed. The SIM will not work in any other device.

4G Mobile Backup:

  • Optus 4G mobile backup is a complimentary service that provides an interim broadband service using the Optus 4G plus network in Optus 4G Coverage Areas only (4G backup service). It is only available using an Optus Ultra WiFi Modem with an Optus SIM on our network.
  • The 4G backup service is available for use from when you receive your Optus Ultra WiFi Modem until your nbn service is fully activated. The Optus 4G backup will also provide an interim broadband service during service faults.
  • The 4G backup service from the Optus Ultra WiFi Modem requires Optus 4G coverage.  4G backup speeds may vary and are limited to 25/2 Mbps.
  • Service Limitations: Some services or service features may not work while the Optus Ultra WiFi Modem is using the mobile backup pathway. This includes but is not limited to (as applicable) the voice service, static IP, and any speed upgrade on your home / small business broadband service. While using the 4G backup pathway on your Optus Ultra WiFi Modem. The 4G backup service is limited to 30 consecutive days unless you contact Optus with a problem. If you don’t contact us, Optus may suspend the 4G backup service until the fixed connection is online.
  • Data usage and speed: There are no data limits for the interim 4G backup service. The speed of the 4G backup pathway has been limited to a maximum line speed of 25 Mbps for downloads and 2 Mbps for uploads. Speeds are variable on the Optus 4G mobile network and will depend on a number of factors including congestion, location of the modem, local conditions, hardware, software, and general internet traffic. Data speeds for the 4G Internet Service are variable and for basic internet connectivity. Your 4G Internet Service speeds may differ from mobile and mobile broadband speeds on our 4G network. The actual speed you will experience at any given time will vary depending on a number of factors including network (i.e., signal, proximity, line of sight, or congestion), location (i.e., modem placement, distance from the Optus 4G tower, geography, obstructions), and other factors (such as weather, hardware, software, etc.). Customers on eligible 4G Internet plans are covered by the Optus Coverage Commitment.

Optus Ultra WiFi Booster:

  • If Optus provides an Optus Ultra WiFi Booster with your plan, Optus will cover the cost of that first Booster if you remain connected for 36 months.
  • You may also have the option to purchase Optus Ultra WiFi Boosters separately to use with an existing eligible Optus Fixed internet plan or additional to any you already have (within a specified limit), in which case you can pay for the device outright (we’ll charge you on your next bill) or you can pay in monthly installations on a POT Device Payment Plan over a term of 12, 24 or 36 months (as selected by you). There is no monthly credit or subsidy applicable to Boosters purchased this way.
  • You must use the compatible Optus supplied modem (currently the Sagemcom 5366 TN modem and or Optus Ultra WiFi modem) with the Optus Ultra WiFi Booster for it to work properly.
  • The Optus Ultra WiFi Booster will support up to 200 connected devices.

What is the Optus Ultra WiFi Booster?

The Optus Ultra WiFi Booster is a device that extends your existing WiFi coverage to help you get wall to wall, uninterrupted coverage within your business premise. It works by connecting with your compatible Optus modem to extend the WiFi coverage area.

I have a large house; can I take more than one Booster?

Yes, whilst one Booster is generally enough for most business premises, you do have the choice to add up to 3 Boosters in total. One booster is included with the Internet Ultimate and Internet Ultimate Fast plans. Otherwise, Boosters will have an extra cost associated with them and can be purchased on a 1, 12, 24 or 36 months Pay Over Time basis.  Click here  for more information.

What modems can I use the Booster with?

Currently, the Optus Ultra WiFi Booster will work with the Sagemcom 5336TN and Optus Ultra WiFi (5366 LTE) Modem.

Where should I place my Optus Ultra WiFi Booster for best results?

You should place your Booster somewhere elevated off the ground and away from other sources of interference, such as microwaves or refrigerators.

Can I pay for my Optus Ultra WiFi Booster in store?

Unfortunately, no. If you wish to pay for your Booster outright, the cost will be applied to your next bill.

I’m currently paying for an Optus Ultra WiFi Booster as an accessory. Can I move to the Internet Ultimate plans and have my Booster included?

Unfortunately, no. You will be able to change plans to the new Internet Ultimate plans and receive an additional Booster (included in your Internet Ultimate plan) and continue paying for your current Booster as an accessory over the term you signed up for (1, 12, 24 or 36 months).

Is the Optus Ultra WiFi Booster right for me?

If you are experiencing areas in your business premise that have limited or poor WiFi coverage then you should consider adding one or more Boosters to help you get an uninterrupted, wall to wall coverage and reduce WiFi blackspots.

I set up the Optus Ultra WiFi Booster, now some of my devices can’t connect to the internet at all anymore, why?

If you previously had devices connected to 5GHz band, you may need to reconnect them to your WiFi after your Booster has been connected. This is due to the enablement of band steering on your modem. Band Steering selects the best band based on the needs of each device. See ‘What is Band Steering?’ and ‘How does Band Steering work?’ below for more information.’

To reconnect your devices to your WiFi, use the WiFi login details printed on your modem label or Optus supplied fridge magnet. If you had previously customised your WiFi name or passphrase for the 2.4GHz band - this will still be your WiFi login and not the Modem label or fridge magnet login.

What is Band Steering?

Dual band modems like the Optus-supplied modems run two different frequency bands. The two bands have a signal of 2.4GHz or 5GHz. The difference between the two bands are:

.  2.4GHz, which has a longer range so it can cover more of an area. However it is slower and is more susceptible to interference from certain appliances such as microwaves, cordless phones, Bluetooth devices or even your neighbours WiFi network.

.  5GHz, which is faster than 2.4GHz, less susceptible to interference and is better for real-time apps and gaming. However, it has a shorter range than the 2.4GHz band.

When band steering is enabled, your modem will always try to connect you to the 5GHz band provided the signal strength is good and your device has 5Ghz capability. To enable band steering you must have Single SSID enabled. See “What is a Single SSID” below for more information.

How does Band Steering work?

Your WiFi enabled devices at office/premise such as your laptop, smart phone, smart speakers, etc. all look for WiFi networks. Depending on the age or type of these devices, they may only support the 2.4GHz frequency.

Knowing what band is best for you to connect your device to can be difficult. This is where band steering from your Optus modem comes in. Band steering will talk to your device to check the signal strength and if the device supports the 5GHz band. If signal strength is good and 5GHz is supported, it will connect to that frequency. If 5GHz is not supported or if the signal strength is poor, it will connect to the 2.4GHz instead.

For example, if you have a new laptop and you connect it up to the WiFi, band steering will automatically connect your laptop to the 5GHz frequency. Alternatively, if you have purchased some smart light bulbs for your premise, these lights may only support 2.4GHz, so band steering will select this frequency for you rather than you trying to connect it to the 5GHz and have the connection fail.

Why can I only see one WiFi band/name? I thought most modems have two.

Optus has updated their WiFi modems to now include Single SSID. This eliminates the need to have two bands/WiFi names. Smart band steering helps manage your devices by automatically selecting the WiFi band that works best for each device and will swap bands when it needs to.

What is Single SSID?

The Optus Ultra WiFi Booster uses Single SSID. SSID stands for Service Set Identifier. Commonly, SSID refers to your WiFi network name i.e. the WiFi name you connect your devices to when connecting to the internet.

Most modems today are dual band modems meaning they have two frequencies, a 2.4GHz and a 5Ghz. In most dual band modems when you go to connect your devices you will see two SSIDs for example MyOptusModem and MyOptusModem_5GHz. Single SSID combines both these WiFi names into one and allows for band steering to be enabled.

When you connect to the Single SSID, the modem or Booster will automatically connect your device to the best frequency band usually based on signal strength via the band steering function. See ‘What is Band Steering?’ and ‘How does Band Steering work?’ above for more information.

What is Optus WiFi Secure?

Optus WiFi Secure TM is a month to month subscription service that protects you and your business from malicious threats while they’re online via a WiFi connection from a compatible Optus supplied modem, using an Optus nbn internet service.

Optus WiFi Secure TM provides security against many online threats such as malicious websites, botnet attacks, and Denial of Service attacks.  It helps to make sure all internet traffic passing through the compatible Optus supplied modem to any device connected to your home or business Optus internet network is safe from these threats.

Am I eligible for Optus WiFi Secure?

Optus nbn customers with a compatible Optus supplied modem are eligible for Optus WiFi Secure TM . Currently, there are two compatible modems: the Optus Ultra WiFi modem and Sagemcom 5366 TN modem.

What will I see on my bill?

Customers will see a charge of $5 per month for Optus WiFi Secure TM . Customers who purchase an Internet Ultimate plan will also see a discount for $5 per month, as WiFi Secure is  included with these plans at no additional cost.

How do I activate my subscription?

Once you have added Optus WiFi Secure TM to your existing plan, it should activate automatically (you can check whether it is active on My Optus App).

If you are required to upgrade your modem to a compatible Optus supplied modem, Optus WiFi Secure will be active when you are connected to the Optus nbn service via your new modem.

I have turned off WiFi Secure via the GUI (modem interface), why does My Optus app show that it is still active?

If you turn off WiFi Secure via the modem interface, you are still subscribed to the service meaning you can turn it back on at any time but will still be charged. If you wish to cancel WiFi Secure permanently and no longer wish to be billed for this, please cancel via the My Optus App or by contacting us. It will then no longer appear active on your app and you will no longer be charged for the product.

Will Optus WiFi Secure always work?

Provided you are using a compatible Optus supplied modem and have added or activated the service; Optus WiFi Secure is working. However, please note that whenever rebooting your modem, there may be a 2-5 minute delay for WiFi Secure Service to reconnect, which means the service will not be active for this limited duration. If you are having issues with your service, please contact us.

Small business backups: How the NBN can help

Alex Kidman

Your small business absolutely should be doing off-premises data backups on a regular basis. Just because you’re not at the scale of a huge enterprise is no excuse – indeed, it’s arguably more of an excuse, because if you’re relying on your business accounts, email correspondence and any other valuable intellectual property to simply reside on one laptop or desktop computer, you’re one power surge or spilled coffee cup away from a potentially business destroying disaster.

Your business almost certainly needs an online requirement as well, whether that’s for direct online sales of goods, simple advertising, or using email or other communication methods to keep track of work, suppliers and employees. It can be tempting to simply opt for the cheapest possible consumer-grade NBN plan to run your small business, because every small business needs to save money where it can. Here’s a selection of NBN 50 consumer plans that, on the surface might be a good match for your small business needs:

Consumer NBN 50 plans

However, it’s well worth considering what you get from a business NBN plan. Here plan prices are typically a little higher, and to give that some comparative context, here’s a range of NBN 50 Business plans:

Business NBN 50 plans

So why consider an NBN Business plan rather than a consumer one when it comes time to do your precious backups?

There are two fundamental reasons.

Service level guarantees

NBN Co as a business doesn’t want its network down for anyone at any particular time – and if you check NBN Co’s uptime reports outages aren’t super common – but one of the big differences between a standard consumer NBN plan and a negotiated business plan is the ability to incorporate a service level agreement (SLA) as part of your contract. This stipulates details such as guaranteed uptime, speed guarantees and penalties that may apply if your provider can’t actually provide service as per the SLA. Many business plans will also incorporate some kind of 4G backup system into the supplied modem-router, so that your business can keep on ticking even if the local NBN connection absolutely dies out.

The big benefit here for most businesses, including small businesses, will be the contention ratio that guides just how much of your speed you can actually expect to get from your connection. All NBN ISPs purchase their bandwidth on a wholesale basis from NBN Co, and then try to spread it as thinly as possible across all customers – that’s how they make their money.

It’s why typical evening speeds for consumers tend to dip in the evenings, when everyone’s busy bingeing Netflix , because the resources each NBN ISP has are spread extra thin. For business NBN plans, however, contention ratios (the quantity of bandwidth relative to customers) are typically kept lower to ensure that you can still continue to operate at optimal speeds. Again, this is often covered by your plan’s service level agreement. But that brings us to the other reason why, if you’re backing up online, a business-grade NBN plan is a much wiser investment.

Higher upload speeds

For most consumer uses, we tend to focus on the download speed of a given connection, because that governs how fast that Disney+ show will come down the pipe, or how quickly you can grab the latest AAA game patch in all its multi-gigabyte glory. While you do still need an upload connection with some speed in consumer-land, it’s the lesser part of the equation, and typically only a small fraction of the upload speed .

Let’s say you wanted (and were in the correct location to get) an NBN 1000 plan. In the consumer space that would be an NBN 1000/50 plan from most providers, offering just 50Mbps upload speeds.

Comparatively, the top tier NBN business plans at the NBN 1000 tier typically go as high as NBN 1000/400.

That’s eight times faster, which means your business backups can (at peak) conclude some eight times quicker. If they were going to take an hour to finalise, they’d (at best speeds, not always available) finish in just seven and a half minutes. If you’ve got more than one system to back up, because you’ve got multiple employees with valuable data to protect, while you’ve still got to share that upload speed, having more of it to hand rather logically means that all of you will get through that part of your work more promptly as a team.

Naturally, those higher upload speeds aren’t just relevant for backup purposes. If you’ve got to send or share large files to clients or suppliers on a regular basis, being able to do so without waiting for a remote server to send messages or accept uploads will save you precious time – and that’s time you could be putting towards growing your small business into a big business.

How the NBN will Benefit your Business

Quicker download and upload speeds, deliver better service to customers, increase customer satisfaction, improve business efficiencies, new opportunities, video collaboration, ability to share large files, easier access to cloud based files, frequently asked questions about nbn.

NBN stands for National Broadband Network. The NBN is an Australian data network project that comes designed to be open-access and wholesale. NBN includes radio communication and wired components that the NBN Co Limited rolled out. It operates in businesses and residences alike.

Internet service providers called retail service providers (RSPs) under the NBN contract directly with NBN Co Limited to access the network. They then use these contracts to sell fixed Internet access to the end-users. They sell commercial plans and domestic plans to private homes.

No matter if you only need basic Internet access, or you need to have a business-wide digital strategy, you can get NBN Business from Business Telecom. The first thing you have to do is find out which networks are available in your area, including NBN, ADSL or Mid-Band Ethernet . Once you know which ones are available, our staff can help you choose the fastest speed for your business needs.

Choose a plan, and our staff can come out to your business and get your Internet set up quickly and efficiently. You'll be able to reach your in-house and remote staff whenever you need them, and you'll get support from our staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We'll work hard to ensure you always have a reliable connection, no matter where you are in Australia or which network you choose to go with for your business.

There are four large components to the NBN, and they include fixed wireless, satellite, optical fibre and pay TV cable. The NBN works by using islands made of fibre connectivity to deliver a large portion of the data. The fibre connections are fibre to premises (FTTP), fibre to the building (FTTB) and fibre to node (FTTN).

The type of fibre connection you need depends on what you want to do with your system. FTTP is for homes who want up to two phone service providers. FTTB is for businesses or apartment complexes, and FTTN is for a single building or connecting multiple buildings. You use these connections to connect to a service provider to get fast and reliable business Internet.
