Executive Summary

Your executive summary provides an introduction to your business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your Executive Summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the type of summer camp you are operating and the status. For example, are you a startup, do you have a summer camp that you would like to grow, or are you operating a chain of summer camp facilities?

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan. For example, give a brief overview of the summer camp industry. Discuss the type of summer camp you are operating. Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target market. Provide a snapshot of your marketing plan. Identify the key members of your team. And offer an overview of your financial plan.  

Company Analysis

In your company analysis, you will detail the type of summer camp you are operating.

For example, you might operate one of the following types of summer camps:

  • Sports Summer Camp: this type of summer camp focuses on helping campers practice and train for a particular sport.
  • Religious Summer Camp: this type of summer camp includes traditional camp activities with a religious enhancement, such as prayers, discussions and devotional readings.

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the summer camp industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.

The third reason for market research is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

Customer Analysis

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other summer camps.

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t direct competitors. This includes summer academies and sports leagues. You need to mention such competition as well.

  • What types of camp activities do they provide?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide better camp activities and experiences?
  • Will you provide services that your competitors don’t offer?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.  

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a summer camp business plan, your marketing plan should include the following:

Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type of summer camp company that you documented in your Company Analysis. Then, detail the specific products you will be offering. For example, in addition to running a summer camp, will you provide transportation to and from the camp, or any off-season programs?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your marketing plan, you are presenting the services you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the location of your summer camp company. Document your location and mention how the location will impact your success. For example, is your summer camp located in a remote area, at a school, at a sports complex, etc. Discuss how your location might be the ideal location for your customers.

Promotions : The final part of your summer camp marketing plan is the promotions section. Here you will document how you will drive customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Advertising in local papers and magazines
  • Reaching out to local websites
  • Social media marketing
  • Local radio advertising

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your summer camp, including marketing the camp, speaking with interested families, making reservations, planning camp activities and running the camp.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to book your 100th camper, or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to expand your summer camp to a new city or location.  

Management Team

To demonstrate your summer camp’s ability to succeed, a strong camp director and management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally you and/or your team members have direct experience in managing summer camps. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act like mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in managing summer camps or successfully running small businesses.  

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statements.

Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your summer camp, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a bank writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement

In developing your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a summer camp:

  • Location build-out including design fees, construction, etc.
  • Cost of equipment and supplies
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Taxes and permits
  • Legal expenses

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your camp location lease or descriptions of camp programs you are working on.

For instance, younger children may need designated nap time and more time to take breaks and run around, while older kids and teens will be able to focus on a single task for longer (though they’re likely still going to want ample time to goof off!).

More skilled staff will need to be paid at a higher rate, while high school or university students will be your most likely employees if you just need another pair of hands. However, it’s still great to pay them a living wage if you can! 

You should also always allow for some wiggle room for unexpected expenses or disasters, as you don’t want to be out of pocket if something goes wrong.

The first experience athletes and parents will have with your camp begins long before they arrive at your site, with your online registration. Ensure that your registration process is streamlined and simple by using user-friendly scheduling software. Once athletes arrive to camp, use clear and direct signage to give parents the best impression you possibly can before they drop off their kids. Make sure that signage offers clear direction as to where parents and athletes should begin the check-in process, and take time to plan out a structured check-in system to minimize confusion.

Make sure your staff members are clearly identifiable and wearing similar uniforms. In addition, ensure that they have been informed of their assigned duties before the check-in process begins. Each staff member should be interacting with athletes and their parents!

If it’s an overnight camp, there should be staff directing traffic, helping parents with luggage, and in the dorms helping with the move in process. The check-in process is one of the most important parts of the camp experience (and usually the most overlooked). Make sure parents feel comfortable leaving their kids with your staff. Remember, first impressions are everything!

2. The Welcome Meeting

After the athletes have completed their first session and have settled into their surroundings, hold a camp-wide meeting to go over basic guidelines, rules, camp timelines, and additional details. Introduce the staff, go over the week’s agenda at a high level, and get your athletes excited for their camp experience. Having the rules on a hand out is a good idea so you can always refer back to it in case of any behavioral issues. A welcome meeting is a simple way to bring the entire camp together so everyone is on the same page. It builds the groundwork for a successful and united camp experience.

3. The Training Rotations

Whether day or overnight, most camps will break the days up into three to four sessions. The morning is the most important session of the day and ideally, should be structured into rotations. A rotation can take place in-terms of which coach is working with any given group of athletes. Not only is it fun for the campers, but it also allows them to learn from different coaches. All coaches have their own coaching and communication methods that may connect with one athlete more effectively than with another. Make sure the stations all relate to a predetermined topic or theme for that day to create consistency. The afternoon and evening sessions should take those topics learned during rotations and provide execution opportunities in game-like situations.

4. Start with the Fundamentals

It might be tempting to throw out a ball and tell the kids to start playing, but it is crucial to start with the basics first. Teach athletes the proper techniques and mechanics for better shooting, throwing, passing, defensive stances, tackling, batting or pitching. The last thing you want is for athletes to build on bad habits and improper techniques. It may not be the most exciting part of camp for either campers or staff, but it’s crucial because it gives you a solid foundation to build on in the following sessions.

Just because you have assigned athletes to an age group or division, does not necessarily mean they should stay there throughout the entire camp. In fact, it’s a red flag if you do not have to make any adjustments after the first few sessions. Since athletes are typically placed by age group, you may notice that one kid is really good and bump him or her up an age group, or vice-versa. There are a lot of different talent levels that attend camps. Some young athletes may be there to be seen by college coaches or to make their varsity high school team, while others might be there because their parents needed a babysitter.

Make adjustments to ensure kids are placed in the right competitive environment by using activities and drills that focus on the fundamentals of the sport. The best way to do this is by evaluating their technical abilities in practice sessions, as well as in small sided games. Coaches should continue to reevaluate throughout camp to move athletes to new groups as their skills advance and make adjustments when appropriate. Keep in mind, when playing in teams it is important to create teams that are as even as possible so everyone enjoys camp!

6. Invest in your Staff

Your staff is the single most important part of your camp, and whether you have five staff members or 50, your staff is certain to have a variety of experiences and a wide range of athletic expertise. Use this to your advantage. The younger and less experienced staff members shouldn’t be coaching the oldest kids. Place your staff with the appropriate ages and skill levels. You should always have coaches that provide demos and examples. In many cases, you’ll have excellent coaches who are far removed from their playing days, which is where you can utilize younger staff members to provide the demos. You can also put them in activities so young athletes can experience the high level of play they provide. They are the “pros” and become role models to your campers. Make sure you have a staff that truly cares, engages with the kids, and has fun!

It’s also important to have an individual or team of admin assistances behind the scenes who can coordinate schedules, answer parent inquiries, and relay all the ins and outs of camp processes.

7. Medical Support

You’d think it’s a no-brainer, but there are camps that have completely forgotten about supplying hydration for the athletes at their facilities. Each field or court should have a water station, and be sure to have a medical trainer or action plan in case any incidents arise.

8. Don't Forget the Gear

Let’s be honest – we all love getting free gear, and the same goes for the kids! Each camp you run should have a t-shirt that athletes receive the first day. These shirts become sentimental objects for these young athletes, for years to come. It’s a great marketing investment, as they’ll continue to wear these after the camp, PLUS it allows you to get a great camp photo! If you have other branded items, set up a small retail shop where parents can purchase items for their young athletes upon pickup to generate additional revenue.

9. Plan for the Unpredictable

Make sure to have a backup plan in case mother nature strikes. If you don’t have access to an indoor facility, have some highlight videos you can project on a wall or plan trivia games. We all know how weather or unpredictable circumstances can change plans in an instant. The last thing you want is unhappy parents who feel their kids sat with nothing to do for four hours of the day. These plans can also be used if it’s extremely hot and kids are fatigued. Make adjustments to make sure the kids have an experience that goes above and beyond the other camps they’ve attended.

In addition, have a staff member or two who can fill in if needed. If something happens – you get pulled into a meeting, get a flat tire, anything – you’re going to need someone who knows the schedule and can coordinate staff and campers.

10. Provide an X Factor

The first thing parents will ask when driving away at the end of camp is “What did you do at camp? Did you learn anything?” Ask yourself that question, and if your answer is “we played soccer,” you didn’t do a good job at creating a memorable experience. Create an experience that will sell next year’s camp for you. Some added fun experiences like staff demos or giant water balloon fights can make all the difference!

11. The Final Competition

Typically, on half of the final day at camp, there should be some type of tournament or competition that brings all of the pieces together. Don’t limit the players to working on the fundamentals, but instead have your athletes focus on bringing together the skills they learned from all of the drills and rotations they worked on during the duration of camp. This is the perfect time to go full-sided and let them have fun! If you’re doing a tournament, make sure that losing teams don’t sit out the rest of the day.

Be sure to invite parents to the final competition so they can see how much their kids have learned and watch how the staff and athletes interact. This is a great opportunity to show off your team’s coaching skills and get parents thinking about enrolling them in your camps and clinics all year round!

Before the campers head home, bring the entire camp together with the parents to hand out awards by age group. It’s amazing to see how happy some kids are to win MVP, Best Offensive Player, or Most Improved. You can also give Coaches’ Awards to reward great kids that might have been less skilled.

13. Evaluations & Continued Growth

Hand out evaluations to share what athletes should work on over the next year . Try not to give out many low scores. You don’t want to discourage the athletes, but you also don’t want them to feel like they’ve already made it. Evaluations can be time consuming, but they are extremely important for the athletes and should be done properly and thoughtfully. Use this as an opportunity to include your email address. Daniel Jones Keeps Focus on Rehab Despite Pre, Post-Draft Quarterback Rumors

"I'm focused on what I can control, and that is preparing to play good football," Jones said during an appearance at the annual Gridiron Gala, where teammate Darius Slayton was honored. "So, (I'm) getting healthy, and I’ll be ready to go.”

The Giants were heavily reported to be seeking a trade for the third overall spot in the draft to take North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye. 

However, the New England Patriots, who ultimately took Maye after rejecting offers from the Giants and Vikings, selected Maye, and the Giants, feeling none of the other quarterbacks left on the board had a high enough grade, went in a completely different direction. 

Jones is coming off one of the most painful seasons of his NFL career to date, literally and figuratively. One year into his four-year, $160 million contract, he lasted only six games before a torn ACL ended his season prematurely. In the meantime, he posted a career-worst 70.5 passer rating in that span, pairing just two touchdowns with six interceptions. 

New York brought in veteran Drew Lock, a former first-round draft pick himself, to have Lock back up Jones for the season during the off-season. If Jones isn't greenlighted to return from his injury, Lock will take the reins and start the season until Jines gets the all-clear from the medical staff. 

If Jones had his way, that backup plan would never have come to fruition.  

"I’m in a good spot," Jones said. "I’ll be ready to go for training camp.”

Jones is not only optimistic about being ready to start training camp, but he's also optimistic he'll have Slayton, who was a fifth-round draft pick in the same rookie class as Jones, on the field to throw despite Slayton's absence from the team's voluntary off-season program.  

“He’s an important guy to me, and he’s worked really hard at a lot of this stuff," Jones said, according to The Athletic . "It’s cool to be here tonight to watch him be recognized. It’s very well deserved.”

Seahorses Club have embarked on a two-week training camp in readiness for the National Swimming Championships scheduled for May 18-19 at the M-Pesa Foundation Academy in Thika.

The club's coach Peter Mwangangi said the swimmers will be at St Bakhita School for a high-performance camp in Machakos and hopes this will inspire them to win medals.

"We will have an intensive 14 days of training to give our swimmers the best available chance to win the event in Thika. We are not leaving anything to chance and we expect several clubs," said Mwangangi

The club will field 43 swimmers for the championship. He said the event is part of their plan to field more swimmers in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. 

“My focus is on preparing elite swimmers for international competitions, including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, under a long-term athlete development plan."

After the event, Seahorses Swim Club will grace the Uganda National Swimming Championship in Kampala next month.

This is part of a broader initiative for sports tourism and exchange programs fostered by the cooperation between the Kenyan and Ugandan swimming federations.

Mwangangi said they are keen to test themselves against Uganda's best swimmers.  “It will be a good opportunity to test ourselves against Ugandan swimmers and make the event very competitive,” he added. 

Uganda's Torpedoes Club based in Kampala is among the confirmed participants, with 15 swimmers who have met the qualifying standards. John Timbe, Director of Torpedoes, expressed his satisfaction with the event's preparations and said his swimmers are coming to win the event

The two-day championship is a qualifier for the World Aquatics short course Swimming Championship in December this year in Hungary.

41 swim clubs have confirmed participation in the championship and many more are expected to confirm by next week. This marks the first national championship meet in Kiambu County and the larger Mt. Kenya region since Kenya's independence.

Dave & Buster's plan to allow betting on arcade games draws scrutiny

Arcade chain  Dave and Buster’s  plan to allow customer betting isn’t winning over everyone.

Software company Lucra Sports announced on Tuesday that it was working with the entertainment chain to allow customers to  place wagers on their arcade games  through the Dave & Buster’s app.

But some lawmakers are calling foul.

Illinois State Rep. Daniel Didech, a Democrat from Buffalo Grove,  filed a bill  on Thursday that’s designed to prohibit family amusement establishments from facilitating wagering on amusement games. He is also looking to criminalize the activity by amending the Illinois Criminal Code. His bill has bipartisan support and is  backed  by more than two dozen other state lawmakers.

“It is inappropriate for family-friendly arcades to facilitate unregulated gambling on their premises. These businesses simply do not have the ability to oversee gambling activity in a safe and responsible manner,” Didech said in a statement.

Didech, who also serves as chairman of the Illinois House Gaming Committee, said he will be advancing the legislation this session to clarify that such conduct is illegal under Illinois law.

Didech told CNBC that he sees many issues with the idea, ranging from the lack of protections for problem gamblers to exposing younger people to gambling. He said that while Illinois requires people to be 21 and older to gamble, Lucra’s service is for people 18 and up.

“None of those protections are in place at Dave & Buster’s locations. They haven’t even remotely done their due diligence,” Didech said.

The Ohio gaming control board has also taken notice.

“The Commission does have serious concerns about the proposal — including that it appears to violate Ohio law regarding the facilitating of illegal prizes for skill-based amusement machines,” a spokesperson for the Ohio Casino Control Commission told CNBC. “We are reaching out to Dave & Buster’s for additional information.”

Both Lucra Sports — the company that will power the wagers on Dave & Buster’s app — and Dave & Buster’s declined to comment on the opposition.

As sports betting has exploded since it became legal in much of the country, companies are looking to cash in on the gambling craze. The idea for Dave & Buster’s is to give customers a new form of entertainment and keep them engaged longer and ultimately to spend more money.

Lucra said most of the wagers across its software platform, which allows users to compete for real money in friendly competitions, are an average of about $10 in size. But the company hasn’t yet decided on a maximum bet amount for Dave & Buster’s.

Lucra said the arrangement with Dave & Buster’s isn’t subject to the same gambling regulations or taxes that sportsbooks are because peer-to-peer betting is considered skill-based. Lucra also said it has extensive  responsible gaming  policies in place, such as options to self-exclude or self-limit on the platform.

Brett Abarbanel, executive director of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, International Gaming Institute, said she is interested to see what safeguards, if any, will be implemented by Dave & Buster’s.

“Regardless of the legal classification of the activity as ‘not gambling’ vs. ‘gambling,’ this is an activity in which participants are risking something of value on an outcome that is uncertain. Therefore, there should be consumer protection measures in place for players, particularly when the target audience is skewed toward younger participants,” she said.
