Parents are the closest people that we have in our lives, whether we realize it or not. They love us not because we are smart, beautiful, successful or we have a good sense of humour, but just because we are their children. I, too, love mom and dad simply because they are my parents, but I think I would have felt the same even if they weren’t. I love who they are as people, each with their own individual traits – and, together, forming an amazing super-team that’s made me who I am today and taught me what life is all about.

My mother is a cheerful, chatty perfectionist who seems to always find something to get excited about and who can talk for hours about animals and flowers. She is never afraid to speak her mind and she can be very convincing when she wants to. She sometimes get upset a bit too easily, but she is just as quick to forgive and forget. I love mom for all that she is – even when she’s angry – for all that she has done for me, and for all that she’s taught me. My mom has been through a lot throughout the years, but she always kept fighting.She taught me to never lose hope even in the direst of moments, and she showed me how to look for happiness in the small things. She’s been trying to teach me to be more organized as well, but hasn’t succeeded yet. I love her for that too.

My father is quiet, patient and calm, and he has an adorable hit-and-miss sense of humour. I may not always find his jokes that funny, but I love him for trying. Dad almost never gets angry and he is always polite, friendly and nice to everyone. He is not the one to verbalize emotions, but he always shows his feelings through sweet gestures and little surprizes. He is the pacifist in our family and never goes against mom’s wishes, but he runs a large company witha firm hand. I love my father for all these characteristics and for all he’s sacrificed to build a better life for us. He’s worked day and night to ensure we afford good education and have a rich, wonderful childhood, and he has passed up many great opportunities for the benefit of our family. I love dad because he’s taught me that you cannot have it all in life, but with hard work and dedication, you can have what matters most to you.

Mom and dad may be very different people, but they complement each other perfectly. Together, they formed a super-team that was always there – and, thankfully, still is – to provide comfort, nurturing, and support and help me grow as a person. Their complementary personalities bring balance in our family, and each of them steps in whenever they are needed the most. Together, they taught me to believe in myself and have turned me into a fighter. Their care and dedication towards me and each other has served as an example of what healthy relationships should be like, and I love and admire them for that.

I love my parents because they are my parents, my good friends, my heroes, my role models, my safe haven, my pillars of strength.I am who I am today thanks to them, and I know that their support and affection will play an essential role in what I will become in the future.All I can hope is that, when I have children of my own, I will be half as good a parent as they were to me.

The Biological Reason Dads And Moms Treat Their Parental Roles Differently

How did mothers and fathers come to have the defined roles that they do? Of course your wife is every bit as capable of chopping wood, driving around the riding lawn mower, wrestling with the kids, and grilling up a fine steak while drinking a six pack in the backyard. But, the Western world has decided those are stereotypical dad duties. There must be something more to being maternal or paternal than just the eons of gender norms and misogyny. Here’s what science says is the reason why you treat the kids one way, and your wife treats them another.

Indirect Versus Direct Parenting

In 2008, researchers from the Universities of Exeter and Edinburgh were checking out the genetic link between the way a particular creature fathers versus the way it mothers. Their subject? The burying beetle — which has very specific parenting roles based on their biological sex.

They found that the male burying beetle is involved in much more indirect care of offspring, doing things like taking care of the nest and gathering food. The female burying beetle was much more likely to be involved in direct care of the offspring, doing activities that kept them in much closer contact, like feeding. They’d also be more apt to complain about the male burying beetle playing golf with his buddies on Sundays. Just lay off, Belinda!

If you separated the beetles so that they were single parents, their behaviors did not change. This suggests that those gender normative activities were deeply ingrained in the creature’s biology. And researchers did find a genetic correlation to the beetles behavior. But that’s a big leap to equate what bugs do and what humans do (unless you’re Gregor Samsa ).

Mothering And Fathering

While discovering a genetic link to explain the differences in mothering and fathering is yet to happen, the differences absolutely do exist. At least that’s the conclusion of thousands of observational studies . Here’s how a few break down:

• Mothers : Are more likely to talk to their kids while they play. They also tend to rely on using toys and objects. This kind of play is great for socialization, and emotional growth, and toy company profits.
• Fathers : Are much more physical in their play and allow for a bit more spontaneity and risk-taking. This helps kids learn their limits while releasing the bonding chemical oxytocin … and sometimes farts.

Language Development

• Mothers : Will use baby talk on a more regular basis when communicating with their kid. This helps the baby get a grasp on the language and how it works.
• Fathers : Talk much more directly to their children, with less sing-songy baby talk. That’s totally cool too, because it might actually act as a bridge to more adult language, like “Holy shit, you’re talking.”
• Mothers : Have a tendency to point out the social cost of being an asshole when they discipline kids. That’s very good for them to know, considering you want them to have friends and not turn into some kind of Shkreli.

On Same Sex Parenting

The idea of the researchers in the beetle study is that the genetic differentiation in parenting roles has reinforced the survival of the creatures. Therefore, there is a passing down of the genetic material associated with strong parenting roles.

But there’s one thing that beetles lack, and that’s culture (plus half of their band members — RIP John and George). When you throw the kind of complex culture and psychology humans deal with everyday, things get messy. It might mean the only true biological difference that matters between mothers and fathers is the ability to pee standing up.

Other than that, as long as the caregivers are working together to support and love their kid, things should work out just peachy.

Boys are most influenced by their fathers and girls are most influenced by their mothers. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons to support your opinion.

It is true that nowadays have a great influence children. Some people hold the opinion that the same sex is the major determination of influencing parent, but others . As far as I am concerned, . My arguments for this point are listed below.

First of all, a father is the person who have already passed ways his son is passing now, in other words, sons are following their father’s footsteps. , based on experience it is easy for a father to notice his sons’ drawbacks and to influence them.

Secondly, it is true that a boy is , a girl is a subtle and fragile one. It is hard for mothers to influence their sons, because it is not likely that can affect a strong one.

In conclusion, it seems to me unfair that boys are most influenced by their mothers. Based on at least two points above I strongly agree that children are influenced by a parent of the same gender.

This essay is too short, 190 words instead of the minimum requirement of 250. It doesn’t say anything about girls being influenced by their mothers, which is also a part of the task – therefore the task is only partially covered. The sentences are not complex enough, there are grammatical mistakes and inaccuracies (see comments underlined in blue). Overall, this looks like a Band 5.5 essay

Roles and Responsibilities for a Mother and Father

When you become a parent, your whole life changes. You have an entire human being to take care of and it’s not just about you anymore. Your task list will grow and can become overwhelming. This is where roles and responsibilities for a mother and father need to be established.

Between appointments, grocery store runs, housework, and sometimes school or work, you might start to feel like you’re not getting the chance to slow down and enjoy the little moments in life. 

When you think about the roles and responsibilities of a parent, you might think of things like making sure 3 meals a day have been made, washing clothes, giving your children baths (if they are still young), and making sure your children are doing well in school.

But if you really think about it, there is much more to being a parent than just going through the motions. As much as it can be a very stressful role to play, you will feel a great sense of accomplishment.

On top of these everyday life tasks, you are also responsible for teaching your child pretty much everything. You’re literally teaching them how to be a functioning person in society.

you can’t do it all. 

When the topic of roles and responsibilities of a mother and father come up, you need to understand that it is a discussion that should lead to a team effort, not a way to try and do less.

As a parent, you need help. You need a moment to take care of yourself.

This is why establishing certain roles and responsibilities with the other parent is key in making sure you do not exhaust yourself while also making sure your children are taken care of.

We tend to often neglect our own needs because we don’t establish these roles from the beginning and it gets to a certain point where the family becomes out of function. We want to give our kids the world but it is impossible to do that without setting up a structure that allows you to do so. Your kids may come first, but you can’t pour from an empty cup.

If you have a partner or are actively co-parenting with your child’s other parent, you can alleviate some of this pressure and stress by taking on equal roles in your child’s life or at home. 

Teamwork makes the dream work. 

Let’s be honest, you can not do it all. If you manage to do it, you’ll likely find yourself feeling like you missed out on experiencing parenthood because you had to spend so much of it stressed out and not fully present.

If there are two parents in the home- there is no reason that one parent should find themselves taking on the majority of the responsibilities at home or with the children.

For example- dad could tidy up the living room while mom bathes the kids. Dad could do an activity with the kids while mom is cooking to keep them engaged and keep them from interfering.

If you find yourself taking on every task on your own, you may grow resentful toward your partner and experience a burnout from overworking yourself.

It can be helpful to function as a team unit- giving each other assistance and time to care for themselves as well. On the days where we feel out of it, our partner may pick up a little bit of our slack.

The important takeaway from this though is to understand that teamwork is important in all of this.

The problem with “traditional” roles

In society, there is a list of “traditional roles” that takes place in a family. These roles and responsibilities of a mother and father have been passed down from generations.

An example of roles would be the mother doing all of the housework including:

• Family management
• Helping kids with homework
• Taking them to and from school

On the other hand, the father’s role is to “lead.” You may find irony in this, as in this traditional role, the mother seems to do all of the “leading.”

The main role of the father in a traditional sense is to:

• Bring money home for the family
• Be the protecotr of the family
• Essentially be the face of the family

The issue with traditional roles is that it is all too easy for men to use this to relieve themselves of all responsibilities when it comes to their children and their home. It fuels a dynamic called financial abuse.

This is where the man controls all of the ins and outs of the money, leaving the women and children to depend entirely on him.

In order to survive, the woman may put up with an intense amount of mistreatment and unfairness for the sake of having a roof over their children’s heads. Being the sole caretaker of the children- they may find it impossible to work, making this cycle very complicated to break. 

Some mothers do everything they can and struggle in poverty, only to have their children taken away because their father, who has done none of the work in raising his children, has money.

These things are not unheard of, and it may even scare some women into staying with their abuser for the sake of being with their children. 

On the other hand though, women may take advantage by not wanting to work or find a job. They think that men should have the sole responsibility of bringing in the income and that they can play the role of being a housewife forver.

Both situations should not happen and should be avoided at all costs.

This will not only bring fairness to the table but will also make sure that no one gets burned out in the process. Parenting should be a fun and rewarding experience so setting up the roles and responsibilities as a team unit is key.

What if the traditional role is what We want?

Some parents DO prefer the traditional family roles.

If it is something that the mother and father have decided they want to enforce, that is at their discretion. Not every man needs to be the breadwinner and not every woman needs to clean and cook.

It may just be the best option for your family, and that’s okay, so long as both parties are comfortable with their roles. It’s all in communication and what works best for not only the children but also the parents. 

Our roles are different, but our involvement isn’t. 

As a mom and a dad, your roles may not be the same, even if you divide the housework and childcare.

Mothers tend to be the nurturer as expected because it’s biological . That doesn’t mean that the father shouldn’t be nurturing or affectionate to their child.

Regardless of what roles you take on in your home, the thing that the kids notice the most is who was involved and attentive. Don’t shy away from doing things for/with your children because it is “outside of your role.”

These are core memories being made for your child, and you want them to remember that they were and are always loved.

If you’re feeling stuck in your roles, switch for a day! 

 Have you ever heard someone say, often sarcastically, “ if only I could be the dad for a day”? I have.

This often comes from overworked, underappreciated, stressed-out parents. While the father is snoring loudly, the mom has to stay up with the baby. On the other hand, while the father is working 40+ hours at a job, the mother is at home watching TV.

If that is the case, have a conversation about switching some of the roles you do. If you’re feeling burnt out and feeling like switching roles for a day, try it! 

Propose the temporary role reversal in a kind tone.

Listen- we understand. It’s frustrating to have a consistently full plate and no help clearing it. Stress can lead to anger and resentment, and you may take it out on your partner which is the last thing you ever want to happen.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed in your role, it is important to communicate with your partner first. A simple discussion could lighten your workload and bring understanding to the situation.

If you don’t have the conversation, resentment will build, and your problem won’t be solved.

Make sure that you are not using a harsh or accusatory tone when communicating because this can trigger your partner to instinctively get defensive, which can lead to bigger issues down the line.

Being a parent requires a lot out of you. The challenges and life-changing routines that you will experience is what truly makes this journey a memorable one.

A big factor in making sure that you can get through this with ease is by establishing the roles and responsibilities early on to make sure that you understand what aspects you will take care of versus your partner.

Without having a strong foundation, you will only make this harder on yourself. You wont get to enjoy the journey and will feel like you are not fit to be a parent.

All in all, we have challenges that make us want to quit but being a parent calls for you to push through and strive to be the best for the sake of your children.

Father or Mother, who is more important? The debate regarding the importance of fathers and mothers in the family or society is one that can not be settled by taking a particular stand. Even till today, many people argue that mother/father is generally more important than the other, but a critical look at their arguments will show that their assertion is based on personal experiences.

Nevertheless, in this article, I will take my time to explain this debate topic. I will also make a final conclusion regarding the topic, father or mother, who is more important in the family.

Imagine that both your Mom and Dad are in near-death situations, who will you save first?

Say your Mom is drowning and at the same time your dad is about to fall off a cliff. What will guide your choice of who to rescue?

The term parent, in this article, encompasses other sub terms i.e, mother and father. A parent is one who cares for, protects and nourishes a child.

The health, safety and total  well being of the child is the responsibility of the former.

The society in fact expects parents to raise their children to become better adults and good citizens instigating positive changes in their present environment which hopefully would extend  beyond their present dispensation for the purpose of making the world a better place.

Roles of Fathers and Mothers in the family

1.They provide food, shelter and clothing: This is true for both fathers and mothers.

In an African setting, it is typical for one to assert that it is the duty of the father to provide money for food and clothing whereas the mother is expected to prepare the meal or buy the clothes.

The man again is seen as the figure that is saddled with the duty of providing a roof over the heads of his family.

But this is not true in other parts of the world and even in Africa there are exceptions to this notion.

2. Education and vocational training: One may safely postulate that education is the most common (and in most instances) the only legacy that parents bequeath their children.

Parents (even those not educated) strive to ensure that their children get a very good education and for whatever it’s worth they strive to ensure that in the absence of the former, the child should at least learn a trade or skill.

The goal generally is to secure a good and indeed bright future , a level of independence at the long run for the child with a mindset that when they’re frail and old that such child can take proper care of them (i.e, reciprocate their kindness).

3. Guidance and counseling: Parents are the first contact a child makes with the society and world at large. The society automatically expects that the parents should teach the children behaviors that are acceptable in the society and by extention how to relate properly with everyone; elders, age mates, younger ones, same and opposite sex alike and parents in turn are fully aware and carryout this duty to the best of their ability.

Parents also help their children make certain important decisions in life, example they help the child discover their interest/passion and improve it, they guide them in making career choices e.t.c.

4. They provide love and security: Parents nurture their children with love and ensure their safety both within and outside their home for example they try to know and provide what their children like,  where they are, whom they’re with, what they’re doing, whether or not it is safe for them and so on.

Why people prefer their mothers to fathers

A local research shows that 8% of every 10% of children would easily pick their Mom over their Dad, the reason for this is quite simple, mothers have a way of living in the moment with their kids hence becoming a part of their day to day activities and lives in general.

This is in apposition to fathers who are so engrossed in their daily struggles and desire to make ends meet as the expense of a beautiful relationship with their children.

The children in response to this perpetual absence cultivate and indeed become acquainted with an insane level of distance from their fathers all be it unintentionally (by default).

Nonetheless, both of them are of essence in every individual’s life and the absence of one whether or not expressly stated by the child in question actually has an effect on the child on the long run, perhaps not financially but emotionally.

The child always feels that there’s something missing and of course such child is right.

Again, in the case of orphans this assertion is more clearly potrayed as they’re often conscious of the absence of their parents and this absence to a large extent has a negative effect on their overall life ,behavior and sadly defines/ limits in most cases their level of success and achievement in life.

Mother in Heaven

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches that all human beings, male and female, are beloved spirit children of heavenly parents, a Heavenly Father and a Heavenly Mother. This understanding is rooted in scriptural and prophetic teachings about the nature of God, our relationship to Deity, and the godly potential of men and women. 1 The doctrine of a Heavenly Mother is a cherished and distinctive belief among Latter-day Saints. 2

While there is no record of a formal revelation to Joseph Smith on this doctrine, some early Latter-day Saint women recalled that he personally taught them about a Mother in Heaven. 3 The earliest published references to the doctrine appeared shortly after Joseph Smith’s death in 1844, in documents written by his close associates. 4 The most notable expression of the idea is found in a poem by Eliza R. Snow, entitled “My Father in Heaven” and now known as the hymn “O My Father.” This text declares: “In the heav’ns are parents single? / No, the thought makes reason stare; / Truth is reason—truth eternal / Tells me I’ve a mother there.” 5

Subsequent Church leaders have affirmed the existence of a Mother in Heaven. In 1909, the First Presidency taught that “all men and women are in the similitude of the universal Father and Mother, and are literally the sons and daughters of Deity.” 6 Susa Young Gates, a prominent leader in the Church, wrote in 1920 that Joseph Smith’s visions and teachings revealed the truth that “the divine Mother, [is] side by side with the divine Father.” 7 And in “The Family: A Proclamation to the World,” issued in 1995, the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles declared, “Each [person] is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny.” 8

Prophets have taught that our heavenly parents work together for the salvation of the human family. “We are part of a divine plan designed by Heavenly Parents who love us,” taught Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. 9 President Harold B. Lee stated, “We forget that we have a Heavenly Father and a Heavenly Mother who are even more concerned, probably, than our earthly father and mother, and that influences from beyond are constantly working to try to help us when we do all we can.” 10

Latter-day Saints direct their worship to Heavenly Father, in the name of Christ, and do not pray to Heavenly Mother. In this, they follow the pattern set by Jesus Christ, who taught His disciples to “always pray unto the Father in my name.” 11 Latter-day Saints are taught to pray to Heavenly Father, but as President Gordon B. Hinckley said, “The fact that we do not pray to our Mother in Heaven in no way belittles or denigrates her.” 12 Indeed, as Elder Rudger Clawson wrote, “We honor woman when we acknowledge Godhood in her eternal Prototype.” 13

As with many other truths of the gospel, our present knowledge about a Mother in Heaven is limited. Nevertheless, we have been given sufficient knowledge to appreciate the sacredness of this doctrine and to comprehend the divine pattern established for us as children of heavenly parents. Latter-day Saints believe that this pattern is reflected in Paul’s statement that “neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.” 14 Men and women cannot be exalted without each other. Just as we have a Father in Heaven, we have a Mother in Heaven. As Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles has said, “Our theology begins with heavenly parents. Our highest aspiration is to be like them.” 15

Mothers need fathers, and fathers need mothers

It’s striking how many ways the social sciences confirm the importance of men and women working together in the raising of precious children..

We had been home with our first newborn for less than six hours when my husband started doing calisthenics with her. I looked at him in wonderment. “What are you doing?!” My protective mother’s heart wanted to swaddle up her 6.5 pounds and hold her close, while he couldn’t wait to bounce her around and play with her.

That pattern persisted. Two years later, I was sitting on the couch reviewing research on parenting. The author described how the oxytocin “bonding hormone” that floods mothers in childbirth and breastfeeding is also active (at smaller amounts) in the bonding processes of fathers.

Only with dads, the hormone doesn’t elicit “cooing and cuddling.” It elicits “tickling and tossing.”

The pattern was striking. My husband (who is an only child and had interacted rarely with infants) wasn’t just acting strangely. We were complementing each other in how we nurtured early development, a complementarity shaped by our uniquely gendered biological and psychological orientations. Those reciprocal patterns, I came to learn, went far beyond bonding.

It goes without saying there is significant overlap in how mothers and fathers influence children. Both parents can provide nurturing, feeding, stimulation, teaching and guidance crucial for children to become competent adults. But research also shows that mothers and fathers have distinct physiologically and psychologically influenced predispositions that contribute to different strengths and styles of interaction with children. When combined, the distinctions create a oneness that uniquely fosters the optimal development of children.

With Mother’s Day this weekend, and Father’s Day next month, it’s worth bringing more attention to some of this. From birth, infants are primed to seek out their mother to form a bond of emotional communication, already knowing her smell, voice and heartbeat. Without any specific training, mothers intuitively match their infants’ emotional state and provide the optimal level of stimulation needed to lay the foundations of personality, self-awareness, attention, empathy, regulation of stress, ability to understand emotions and capacity for intimacy. Maternal sensitivity, a measure of a mother’s responsiveness, attunement and nonintrusiveness, has been identified as the strongest, most consistent predictor of a child’s cognitive, social and emotional development.

The father-child bond is also important, shaping brain development beginning in the toddler years. But fathers more often use playfulness and stimulating physical activity to connect with their children, orienting their children to the outside world, even in the way they hold them like a football. This paternal orientation likewise addresses important developmental needs in children.

In fact, a father’s influence on social-emotional capacity complements a mother’s in critically important ways. Women tend to express all emotions — other than anger — stronger than men, but also tend to be better able to regulate emotions, which bolsters specific nurturing capacities by, for instance, delaying personal gratification and inhibiting aggressive responses.

Throughout their lives, children consequently tend to go to their mothers for comfort in times of pain or stress. When fathers respond to children’s emotional hurts, by comparison, they are more likely to focus on fixing the problem rather than addressing the hurt feeling.

This seeming “indifference” to the emotion may not appear nurturing but becomes very useful — particularly as children grow older. Indeed, children tend to seek out and share things with their dads precisely because of their measured, problem-solving responses. The less emotional response actually becomes a strategic form of nurturing in emotionally-charged situations.

Fathers also strengthen children’s social-emotional capacity through their more intuitive encouragement of risk-taking. Whether on the playground, in schoolwork or in trying new things, they often guide children in deciding how much risk to take while encouraging them in it.

Fathers tend to be particularly attuned to developing children’s physical, emotional and intellectual independence — in everything from children making their own lunches and tying their own shoes to doing household chores and making academic decisions.

In observing these differences, Canadian scholar Andrea Doucet wondered if fathers just weren’t as “nurturing” as mothers. Their behaviors didn’t seem to fit the traditional definition of “holding close and sensitively responding.” But a key part of nurturing also includes the capacity to “let go.” It is this careful “letting go” that fathers can be particularly good at. In fostering independence and risk-taking, while ensuring safety and protection, fathers prepare their children to face the world, develop confidence, learn to stand up for themselves and be braver in unfamiliar situations.

Mothers and fathers also influence children’s cognitive and academic capacities in complementary ways. From the beginning of life, mothers lay the foundation for mental processing, shaping IQ, capacity for shared attention, referential communication and social learning through the relatively simple yet profound process of “mutually responsive interaction” with their child. As children grow, mothers tend to engage in more teaching-oriented, didactic interactions with children, which shape memory, problem-solving, and language advancement.

Fathers’ unique contributions to children’s cognitive development build on the foundation of mothers, and an involved father has been identified as the strongest predictor of college graduation. This is partly because involved fathers are more likely to help with homework and provide financial support. But it’s also the case that involved fathers effectively monitor and guide children’s actions, helping them avoid behaviors that might negatively impact school achievement.

As summarized by a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services report, “Fathers often push achievement while mothers stress nurturing, both of which are important to healthy development.”

This is also shaped by the fact that mothers tend to intervene and correct children more frequently than fathers. But when fathers discipline, they tend to “hold the line.”

Fathers’ willingness to confront their children and enforce discipline appears to engender a sense of authority and boundary that can shape children’s sense of social stability, order and even self-governance. In fact, fathers’ distinct ways of expressing encouragement, giving instruction and providing assistance, as well as their involvement in rules, monitoring and supervision seems to provide the right mix of engagement and monitoring that strengthens children’s academic achievement and helps them steer clear of various kinds of trouble.

As with all research, there are limitations to what can be concluded. First, there is tremendous variation within gender. Not all mothers and fathers are going to parent the ways these studies found to be typical. Even in these situations, however, mothers and fathers still tend to take complementary approaches that are valuable to children.

As a second qualification, parenting behavior is influenced by biological processes, including what mothers experience through pregnancy, giving birth and sustaining life, and what fathers experience through closeness with their partner and child. Yet these biological processes happen within a social and cultural ecology that may undermine the valuing of equal partnership in nurturing life together as father and mother.

Role-based descriptions of mothering and fathering can sometimes be used to distort the ways that mothers and fathers can both provide, protect and nurture in meaningful ways. If overly rigid, these understandings can also limit an appreciation for the diverse ways families honor differences while strengthening equal partnership.

Regardless of the distinctions, parents’ devotion to one another and their children is an incomparable gift. On a wide variety of measures, the average child growing up with married parents is at an advantage compared with single-parent or cohabiting-parent peers. Parenting is ideally a work designed for two.

In 2006, fathering scholar Andrea Doucet shared an illuminating moment from her extensive research with single dads. After a long evening discussing these fathers’ experiences, she asked, “In an ideal world, what resources or supports would you like to see for single fathers?”

Doucet expected to hear that they wanted greater social support and societal acceptance, along with perhaps more programs and policies directed at single dads. Instead, after a period of awkward silence, one dad stood and said, “An ideal world would be one with a father and a mother. We’d be lying if we pretended that wasn’t true.”

Nods of agreement and expressions of approval followed from the other dads. Although many had had bitter experiences of separation and divorce, they could not ignore the inherent connectedness of paired mothering and fathering — and the real challenges experienced when one or the other is not there. They knew because they lived it.

Both a father and a mother are needed to create life, and both are needed to best facilitate the nurturing of that life. A culture that embraces that reality is more likely to do all that is possible to ensure that is a likelihood for children.

The spiritual benefits of honoring your mother

The commandment to “Honor your father and mother” can be either the easiest or most difficult commandment that God gave to Moses.

Often our relationship with our mother is one that is cherished and fostered over the years.

On the other hand, sometimes we may try to deliberately avoid our mother, either because we have been wounded in the past, or because we have done something wrong that we believe would provoke her to anger.

Whatever our relationship with our mother may be, God calls us to honor her.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that this commandment is an important one to observe:

God has willed that, after him, we should honor our parents to whom we owe life and who have handed on to us the knowledge of God. We are obliged to honor and respect all those whom God, for our good, has vested with his authority. CCC 2197

Spiritual and temporal fruits

The Catechism also explains that whenever we honor our mother, we are granted spiritual fruits through our obedience to God’s law:

Observing the fourth commandment brings its reward: “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the LORD your God gives you. ” Respecting this commandment provides, along with spiritual fruits , temporal fruits of peace and prosperity. Conversely, failure to observe it brings great harm to communities and to individuals. CCC 2200

Its important to keep in mind that as we grow older and no longer live with our parents, we may not be required to obey them in all things, but we are always called to respect them:

As they grow up, children should continue to respect their parents. They should anticipate their wishes, willingly seek their advice, and accept their just admonitions. Obedience toward parents ceases with the emancipation of the children; not so respect, which is always owed to them. This respect has its roots in the fear of God, one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. CCC 2217

No matter what kind of relationship we have with our mother, God still requires us to give her respect and honor.

Life can be difficult as a mother, and mothers don’t always make the right decisions.

Through whatever trials life brings, we need to be supportive of our mother and love her with God’s love.
