Application, Admission, and Financial Aid FAQs

When can i expect to hear the status of my application.

We download materials from grad school in early January and send them to each area for assessment. Each area makes decisions at different times. We will be in touch when there’s a decision to communicate. Write to us if you have a deadline on another offer you are considering.

My undergraduate GPA is low, but my Master’s GPA is better. What are my chances of admission?

Admissions completes a holistic look at your academic record and academic potential.  Your academic statement, standardized test scores, and recommendation letters also affect admission decisions.

What are the minimum GPA, test scores, etc. to be considered competitive?

We do not provide this information. We are a highly selective and small program.

I am currently in a program and will complete my coursework soon, would it be possible to finish my dissertation in the Management PhD program?

Transfers (including students from other Cornell PhD programs) are through the regular application process. Transfer credits from previous programs are determined by the area faculty on a case-by-case basis, the PhD program office is unable to provide any broad guidelines to applicants in this process.

I have been out of school for several years. How does this affect admission chances?

Several of our students have work experience, and a couple of our best recent placements worked for almost a decade. We look at the totality of applicant strengths.

I am a double degree/major, how should I enter this information?

Describe one degree/major per line in the application, including separating GPAs if you wish.

I don’t have a business undergraduate degree. Will this hurt my admission chances?

No, our students have a variety of college majors like CS, Econ, Stats, Psychology, Sociology, etc.

I am currently in another PhD program. Will this be seen negatively?

No, we have had transfer students in the past. These applications are considered through the regular application process.

My research interests lie in the intersection of two areas. To which area should I apply?

See professor profiles in both areas to look for a research interest match.

Can I request an application fee waiver?

The Graduate School has detailed information on how to request an application fee waiver.

Do you have a cutoff for GRE/ GMAT scores?

We do not, but we rarely admit students with scores below 90-95 percent.

What is the institution code for submitting test scores?

You don’t need to add extensions to this. You can choose 01 (grad school) or 02 (management).

I applied last admission cycle, can I use my previous letters of recommendation?

Yes, once you have submitted your application, reach out to [email protected] to request your previously submitted letters be added to your application package.

I have applied to another field and also want to apply to Management at Cornell. Can I do this?

No, you have to pick one. If the first rejects you, you can ask for your application to then be transferred to the second option for consideration.

I am interested in both the Masters and PhD programs, can I apply to the MS in Management program and to the PhD in Management program?

Yes, it is up to you to disclose this information on your application.

How much funding do you offer?

We provide full tuition, health insurance, and a competitive stipend for 5 years. We have students with families who live on this stipend, you have to pay insurance for your family yourself. We only make fully-funded offers. We share these numbers in our offer of admission.

I am an employee of Cornell, can I apply for the PhD in Management program?

Unfortunately no, our PhD in Management program is full-time residential.

  • Health Policy and Economics

Our  Master of Science track in Health Policy and Economics  is not like your generic public health degree — in fact, far from it. We train students to become leading policy analysts and researchers working to identify the most effective ways to organize, manage, finance, and deliver high quality healthcare. Students learn to apply advanced research methods such as biostatistics, econometrics, and decision science to evaluate policies and programs while gaining valuable real-world experience under the guidance of a healthcare expert during the culminating capstone project.

This track provides a strong foundation in healthcare research methods with specialized training in health economics, health policy, data analytics, and implementation science. Each student acquires hands-on experience through a faculty-mentored research project that begins in the first term and culminates in a capstone/portfolio final project.

This track also has close ties to other departments within Weill Cornell Medicine and Cornell University, Cornell Tech, and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Full-time students can complete the program in 12 months, and part-time students in 18-24 months.

Unique Program

There are great differences between an M.P.H. and our M.S. track in Health Policy and Economics. M.P.H. programs tend to place greater emphasis on public health and epidemiology; contrastingly, we emphasize a broader policy perspective to include payment policy, health insurance coverage, and structural issues related to the healthcare delivery system. Additionally, our program is mostly practice-based while M.P.H. programs tend to be more theoretical. Our goal is to prepare professionals to work effectively in health-related policy positions and serve as well-trained healthcare researchers with strong analytic skills.

We keep our class size and student-to-faculty ratio low so that our students get the most personalized experience possible. Because of this, close mentorship with a faculty member throughout the entirety of the program is provided to all of our students. Many even continue their relationship well beyond becoming alumni and working in their careers.

Opportunities

Our alumni hold positions in data and policy analysis, healthcare consulting, project management, quality improvement, and more. Our alumni are also well-prepared to pursue doctoral studies.

Students learn to develop and evaluate innovative approaches to financing and delivering healthcare using cutting edge research methods, while gaining hands-on experience in data analysis.

Understanding how incentives present in the nation’s healthcare system – from ways that physicians and hospitals are reimbursed to the regulatory requirements for the development and approval of new drugs and medical devices – influence the cost and quality of care is essential to keep up with the changing healthcare landscape and to provide the best care possible. Utilizing cutting-edge statistical approaches, our students learn to conduct rigorous analyses with healthcare data using computing packages such as SAS, Stata, and R. The results of these analyses allow them to better comprehend how changes in health policy and new interventions in the delivery of care may improve the health of people across the country.

Our students have diverse backgrounds including social sciences, basic sciences, medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and healthcare administration. Their diversity creates a unique, collaborative learning environment.

Collaboration

Being in New York City is a huge asset for our program. Local institutions collaborating with Weill Cornell Medicine include NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the Hospital for Special Surgery, The Rockefeller University, the State Department of Health, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and more.

Our faculty are nationally recognized experts in health policy, economics, health services research, biostatistics, health informatics, cost-effectiveness, and comparative-effectiveness. Our NYC location allows for collaboration between experts and researchers at neighboring institutions such as NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Hospital for Special Surgery, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

The culminating capstone project allows students to gain valuable, real-world experience under the guidance of leading healthcare experts to address problems faced by our healthcare system.

  • A graduation marshal will motion your row to stand and proceed to the left-hand side of the stage.  Make sure you have your name index card ready to give to the graduation marshal.  You will need to file out quickly towards the stage and stay in line.
  • As your row lines up, a graduation marshal will take your graduation name index card. The graduation marshal will deliver your index card to Prof. O’Donoghue.
  • Prof. O’Donoghue will call your name, and you will proceed across the stage to receive your certificate from a faculty member who will shake your hand (your diploma will be mailed to you in June). While this happens, a photographer will take a candid photo of you.
  • You will then immediately walk back down the aisle to take your seat. Marshals will help guide you down the path. All guests will remain seated until the ceremony officially ends.

Closing Remarks:   Once everyone has been recognized, there will be very brief final remarks.  After a final round of applause, the program will end around 5:45pm.

Personal Photos:   We ask that guests wait until after the ceremony has ended to move about and take photos.  After the ceremony, feel free to use the risers or the backdrop/floral arrangements for photos.

Guest Seating:   Guests will be seated in the second, third, and last seating sections from the North side of the Ramin Room. The first section is assigned seating for faculty and graduates. Seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.  Please ask your guests to help us all by keeping the aisles clear and not standing in the photography areas to take their own pictures.  There will be lots of time to take pictures after the ceremony ends.  The local fire codes require us to keep those areas clear.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Seating Accommodations:   If you or one of your guests needs a seating accommodation (e.g. space for a wheelchair or an aisle seat), please let us know as soon as possible.  You can communicate seating needs via the commencement survey or by emailing Brooke Musmacker, Economics Undergraduate Experience Coordinator at [email protected] . Spaces will be reserved for guests who request seating accommodations and their families.

Professional Photos:   You will be emailed a link from GradImages to your Cornell email address a few days after the ceremony to view your photos and make purchases.

CONGRATULATIONS!   Thanks for attending the Economics Commencement Ceremony!  We are so proud of your hard work and dedication! Please stay in touch via our Facebook Page , Twitter Page, and  LinkedIn Group .

Emily Garner Named Eighth Women’s Basketball Coach at Cornell University

4/11/2024 5:30:00 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Emily Garner , who lifted Trinity College to new heights during her eight seasons at the helm of the Division III program, has been named the Rebecca Quinn Morgan '60 Head Coach of Cornell Women's Basketball by Nicki Moore, the Meakem & Smith Director of Athletics and Physical Education. Garner becomes the eighth head coach in school history and replaces Dayna Smith, who spent the previous 21 years directing the program. "In Emily, I believe we've found a coach who not only cares deeply about the student-athlete experience but has also demonstrated the ability to elevate the competitive success of teams at academically rigorous institutions," Moore said. "From her experiences at winning programs as an assistant coach to her playing experience at Lafayette, and especially having developed as a head coach for eight years, Emily has all the skills and owns the intangibles necessary to elevate Big Red basketball. In addition, our committee and I genuinely enjoyed spending time with her, and could imagine her thoughtfully mentoring our student-athletes and developing them as high-level players and people. I'd also like to thank Jenna McLaughlin and the team at Korn Ferry for their tireless work in assisting us finding the right fit for the position. I am thrilled to welcome Emily to Ithaca." "I am incredibly grateful and excited for the opportunity to serve as the Rebecca Quinn Morgan '60 head women's basketball coach at Cornell University," Garner said. "A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Nicki Moore and the search committee for entrusting me with leading our student-athletes in their pursuit of excellence on the court, in the classroom, and in the community. Cornell is a special place, and I'm looking forward to building relationships and working to create a strong competitive tradition in the Ivy League." Garner guided Trinity (Conn.) to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances (2023, 2024) and the school's first-ever NESCAC regular season title. Her teams posted a 124-55 record, including a 96-35 mark over her final five seasons, while playing in the most competitive league in Division III. Taking over a program that had historically occupied the bottom half of the standings in her conference prior to her arrival, Garner led her Trinity to the league tournament in each of her final six seasons, reaching the championship game for the first time in program history in 2023. The 2021-22 NESCAC Coach of the Year, Garner was named D3Hoops.com Regional Coach of the Year in 2022-23 after guiding the Bantams to a school-record 25 wins, the conference's regular season title, and an eventual NCAA Elite Eight appearance. Her teams have been among the top defensively in the country over the past three years, ranking in the top 40 nationally in scoring defense (36th in 2022, 18th in 2023, 24th in 2024) while taking care of the basketball (top 30 nationally in fewest turnovers in both 2023 and 2024). A total of 30 players were named to the NESCAC All-Academic Team during her time leading the program. Garner's commitment to player development led to four major conference award winners in the conference, including three different Defensive Players of the Year, and a two-time All-American. An engaged member of the Trinity community, Garner served on the Task Force for Women, the Athletics DEI Committee, and the Task Force for Campus Climate, and served as an assistant professor of Physical Education, ultimately receiving recognition on the college's "50 for the Next 50" list, honoring women who would have a lasting impact on the future of Trinity College. She previously served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Army West Point from 2012-16, helping the Black Knights to four postseason appearances, including a pair of NCAA appearances, and a 99-28 record. Army West Point also played in two WNIT's during her time on the sidelines and she coached a pair of conference players of the year. In her final season under head coach Dave Magarity, the Black Knights went 29-3 and won regular season and tournament titles in the Patriot League. Garner began her coaching career in 2010 as a graduate assistant at LIU-Brooklyn after graduating from Lafayette. A three-year starter for the Leopards, she was elected team captain as a senior and earned Patriot League All-Tournament honors that season. She graduated ranked in the top 10 in school history in rebounds, free throws made and free throws attempted. A 2009 graduate of Lafayette with a degree in English with a minor in Economics and Business, Garner earned her Master's in Secondary English Education from LIU in 2012. She is also a graduate of the 2018 NCAA Women Coaches Academy, which is hosted in partnership with the Alliance of Women Coaches and is a four-day educational training available to NCAA coaches of all experience levels. The NCAA Women Coaches Academy is designed for women coaches who are ready to increase their effectiveness by learning advanced skills and strategies that directly affect their personal and team success. She is also an active member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). ABOUT THE BENEFACTOR: Before retiring as president and CEO of Joint Venture: Silicon Valley, Rebecca Quinn Morgan `60 was a teacher and California state senator. In 1993, she and husband Jim, also Class of 1960 and Chairman Emeritus of Applied Materials Inc, started the Morgan Family Foundation, which advanced philanthropic causes from education to environmental conservation.  Along the way, Becky has been a staunch ally of women's athletics and in 2004 she named Cornell's head coach of women's basketball position and continues to be the programs leading supporter.

Steel industry protectionism beyond typical election-year rhetoric

4/17/2024 By | Staff , A&S Communications

President Biden has announced plans to triple the rates of tariffs on steel and aluminum from China amid pressure from labor unions concerned about the survival of the U.S. steel industry amid Chinese competition.

Allen Carlson is an associate professor of government at Cornell University, and an expert on Chinese foreign policy. Carlson says it’s crucial to note that President Biden’s tariff proposal is less about economics and more related to U.S. domestic politics.

“Presidential election years tend to stir things up in the U.S.-China relationship, even when the two countries are on relatively good terms with each other. 2024 is not such a time.

“In the past Beijing has tended to take shifts in U.S. policy during election years with a grain of salt. But this year may be different as Xi’s China is in a stronger position than it was before. More importantly, this election cycle promises to be more turbulent than any that has come before it. And China policy will inevitably get drawn into the maelstrom.”
