33 Ideas To Meaningfully Celebrate Earth Day
April 22 is Earth Day! This annual celebration is an opportunity to raise awareness and advocate for change around the issues most impacting our planet — and celebrate the beauty of Mother Earth.
While the urgency of climate justice should inspire us all to spring to action on Earth Day — so should the exciting progress we’re already making.
So, this Earth Day, we invite you to look for the helpers , make your own meaningful changes for the planet, and tap into joy as a boundless resource for resistance and change.
We’ve gathered some ideas to celebrate and nurture the planet, but first, here are a few quick facts about Earth Day!
5 Facts About Earth Day
- Earth Day was started by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970 to promote environmental policies on a national scale.
- Following the first Earth Day, Congress authorized the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency .
- Earth Day also led to the passage of the Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts .
- In 1990, Earth Day went global and mobilized 141 countries to participate in protecting the environment.
- The date April 22nd was chosen for Earth Day to maximize the number of university (and K-12) students that could participate in celebrating the holiday.
We already know it’s important to learn more about and advocate for the health of the planet (and the people on it!) every day of the year, but it’s helpful to have somewhere to start. We’ve created a guide on how to celebrate Earth Day this year.

Activities and Ideas: How To Celebrate Earth Day
Learn about the real environmental problems we’re facing..
Knowledge is power, and staying up-to-date with the challenges facing our planet helps us create better solutions, fight for equity and justice, and make real, lasting change.
It’s important that we confront the realities of the problems we’re up against. Here are a few facts to know and explore about our personal impact:
- Global average temperatures are on the rise , thanks to greenhouse gasses like carbon dioxide. Since 1880, Earth’s temperature has risen by an average of 0.14 degrees Fahrenheit per decade, but the rate of warming since 1981 is more than twice as fast , clocking in at 0.32 degrees Fahrenheit per decade.
- The average annual carbon emissions per American is 20 tons, compared to a world average of 4 tons.
- Food waste is also a major problem — a third of the world’s food supply is wasted every year , while 30% of the global population lives in a state of food insecurity .
- The people in America most impacted by climate change are Black, Hispanic, and Latinx communities — who are statistically less likely to be responsible for climate harm .
- Systems of overconsumption and extraction lead to depleted environments and social inequity, as 80% of the world’s natural resources are used by just 20% of the population .
- Personal responsibility is important, but it’s also key to remember that, according to the BBC , the fossil fuel industry has made an estimated $2.8 billion in profits per day for the last 50 years, governments around the world currently spend $1.9 trillion per year on environmentally harmful subsidies , and a small number of companies are responsible for a significant percentage of global emissions.
While these are only a handful of examples of the challenges we’re up against, their impact is devastating. The results of climate change lead to some of the following predicaments:
- Extreme weather disasters , like floods, storms, droughts, and heatwaves are on the rise — and so is the displacement of people impacted by climate disasters .
- The global economy loses billions of dollars annually due to climate disasters , damage to infrastructure , lost productivity , and increased healthcare costs .
- Things like ocean acidification and deforestation impact plants and animals , leading to decreased biodiversity across the planet .
- Human health is threatened in a myriad of ways ; as we experience increased respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, allergies, food- and water-borne illnesses, infectious diseases, injuries, hunger, and threats to mental health.
- Rising sea levels and melting ice can and will threaten coastal communities and low-lying islands — often where many Indigenous peoples live .
- Food insecurity and water scarcity are exacerbated.
All of this is bad news. But keep reading, because we have good news…
Read good news about the progress we’re making in the fight against climate change.
Okay, so that was a lot to start out this list of Earth Day “celebrations.” But, fear not! There is hope, we promise.
Plus, climate doom really doesn’t do much to help . So, once you’re feeling educated and informed about all the big climate challenges we have to face, give yourself a little boost of hope by learning more about some climate solutions worth celebrating.
We’re all about good news at Good Good Good. And climate good news is our favorite. Here are a few to get you feeling inspired:
- Some animals are already rebounding ( butterflies , whales , tigers , bison , gorillas , and ugly animals !) thanks to thoughtful conservation efforts!
- All of our action to restore the ozone layer since 1989 has paid off — and now it’s poised to make a full recovery ! Climate action works!
- Communities have already begun coming together to organize community composting efforts , build disaster-resilient neighborhoods , plant more urban trees to combat environmental racism, use building materials that absorb CO2 , turn sewage (yuck!) into green energy (yay!) , buy electric school buses , and paint streets white to reduce heat.
- People are even rethinking entire ways of organizing society and our economy to better serve people and planet. ( Doughnut economics , charging companies for producing trash , and governments paying to repair your stuff … to name a few.)
- Indigenous communities have long cared for the planet and continue to do so. In just the last few years, they’ve driven two oil companies out of the Arctic , are creating innovative solar solutions, continue to share their time-honored farming techniques , and are restoring and caring for forests in Colombia , California , and the Amazon Rainforest .
- We’re protecting oceans and marine life by… sinking old buses into harbors , adding oysters to filter polluted waters,
- All kinds of people are stepping up to take climate action — from combat diving veterans and ‘ youth councils ’ to motorcycle fans and your retired grandma .
- And in weird good news … acrobats are using parkour to fight light pollution , coffee farmers are reducing food waste with delicious cascara , a brewery puts carbon emissions back into beers , a Google competitor plants trees with every search , a soccer club just went carbon-neutral , trees are tweeting , and scientists invented a sustainable kind of glitter made from fruit instead of microplastics .

Learn about the Native lands you live on.
Climate activism has been built on the foundation of so many Indigenous communities, and the least we can do is learn more and acknowledge the stolen land on which we all live.
Learn more about the specific land you occupy through this interactive map , which outlines Native communities across the globe.
Subscribe to some new sustainability newsletters.
There are plenty of reasons to subscribe to reputable climate-related newsletters: Because climate change is left out of relevant reporting , it’s utterly overwhelming to keep track of the latest environmental news, or it’s just much more accessible to find factual, hopeful non-paywalled news this way.
We’ve gathered some of our favorite sustainability newsletters to learn more and help combat climate change.

Learn about intersectional environmentalism.
Intersectional environmentalism is a movement that demands that our planet and its people are both cared for and seen as interconnected.
Developed and coined by Leah Thomas (the author of “The Intersectional Environmentalist: How to Dismantle Systems of Oppression to Protect People + Planet” ), the study of intersectional environmentalism is integral to everyone’s work as both climate and social justice activists.

Plant or support a local community garden.
Connect with people in your existing local gardens , plant your own small patch of vegetables, or assist in food distribution and urban landscaping projects.
There are plenty of ways to get involved! Whether you’re a soil genius, or a skilled marketer who can spread the word about fresh produce, you can play a part in building a regenerative agriculture system right in your own backyard.
Clean up litter in your community.
Cleaning up litter in your community is a small but mighty way to volunteer your time for the sake of the planet.
Register for a cleanup kit from Keep America Beautiful and track your cleanup progress with the Clean Planet Project app, too!
Restore nature in your area.
There are so many opportunities to get involved in nature conservation, no matter where you live. Plant trees and native plants, help restore wildlife habitats, and team up with local experts to keep your community in harmony with nature and wildlife.
You can visit The Nature Conservancy’s volunteer guide to find various volunteer opportunities near you.
Help with wildlife and environmental research in your area.
You don’t have to be a tenured professor to engage with environmental and wildlife research! Become a citizen scientist and help gather information for the pros. Here are a few fun ways to do that:
- Help out the Great Sunflower Project by planting lemon queen sunflowers in your yard. Once they bloom, all you have to do is count the number of pollinators that land on the sunflowers in five-minute segments.
- Count birds! For real, that’s all you have to do. Celebrate migration season , count the birds you see in your area, and submit your data through eBird to help scientists track wildlife.
- You can also remotely count penguins and iguanas ! Seeing a theme here?
- Not super stoked on any of these options? Comb through all kinds of projects of various disciplines with Zooniverse and see where you can best contribute to real-life research!
- Take Action
Donate to environmental justice organizations in your community.
Indigenous and Black communities have been at the forefront of the environmental justice movement since the beginning. Yet, they lack access to the necessary funds and resources they need to protect our planet.
When donating to environmental organizations this Earth Day, practice intersectionality , and redistribute wealth to grassroots organizations that count on your support to survive. Here are a few we recommend:
- Intersectional Environmentalist
- Black Farmer Fund
- Climate Justice Alliance
- Sunrise Movement
- Indigenous Environmental Network
- Honor The Earth
- Living Lands & Waters
Urge your elected officials to enact meaningful climate legislation.
Every day is a good day to call your elected officials and urge them to take action against climate change. Whether it’s a fee for plastic bags in your city, or a campaign to stop a major oil rig across the country, any climate-forward legislation matters.
Not sure where to start? #Call4Climate and the Citizens Climate Lobby are great resources to turn to.
Work with political groups to champion environmental justice.
Check out the Citizens Climate Lobby and the Sierra Club to learn more about getting involved with political groups to champion environmental justice.
Volunteering can look like canvassing, writing postcards, testifying to your local elected officials, or registering people to vote. No matter your type of activism , this work truly matters!
Make small lifestyle changes that benefit the planet.
We know nobody can ever be completely “zero waste,” but that doesn’t mean simple lifestyle or sustainability changes are unimportant! Even a few small changes can make a big difference. Here are a handful you can consider starting this Earth Day:
- Make energy-efficient home swaps .
- Choose seasonal produce next time you get groceries.
- Try to buy — and waste — less. And if you do need something, consider investing in mindful eco-friendly (or pre-loved!) products .
- Compost your food scraps.
- Consider going meatless on Mondays.
- Commit to going a year without using plastic water bottles.
- Switch to paperless billing.
As you begin to find small ways to be more environmentally conscious in your everyday life, you’ll likely find more ways to create an even bigger positive impact over time. Let Earth Day be the start of a new personal trend.
Shop sustainably.
Listen, before we get any further, we have to remind you that you do not need to spend any money to take better care of the planet! The best way to be sustainable isn’t to buy the hot new eco-friendly items on the market, but to use up what you already have.
That being said, we know that sometimes even our most beloved essentials reach the end of their life cycle, and you want to be intentional when you buy something new. We have a whole section of our website dedicated to ethical shopping !
A big tip when making an eco-conscious purchase? Know how to spot greenwashing (and avoid it), look for sustainable materials and sourcing, and lean toward brands with certifications keeping them accountable, like Climate Neutral, B Corp, or 1% for the Planet!

Attend an Earth Day event.
Being in community with other climate activists and Earth-lovers is the best way to spend Earth Day. And the best part? There are so many Earth Day events around the globe!
Check out the official Earth Day website for a map of events , or check listings on Eventbrite and Facebook to find cleanups, seminars, celebrations, and more near you.
Host a clothing swap in your community.
The fashion industry is one of the biggest polluters in the world . Aside from ditching fast fashion brands and shopping secondhand , you can also coordinate a clothing swap with your friends and fellow tree-huggers.
Share your most beloved pieces, try new trends without the guilt of buying something new, and keep your clothes out of landfills all at once!
Go car-free for the day (and then see if you can keep it up).
While you’re bopping around town at events and clothing swaps, see if you can carpool, take public transit, or ride your bike!
There are plenty of ways to live without a car , and even if you just give it a go for one day, you might see that it’s a lifestyle shift you want to seriously consider.
Visit a local farmer’s market.
Boost your local agriculture economy! By late April, most major cities will certainly have farmer’s markets open and thriving, so Earth Day gives you the perfect excuse to source some in-season produce from your local growers.
If you’re not able to find a big market, definitely use the Farmstand app to find roadside farm stands to shop, too.
Plant native pollinators.
The real VIPs of Earth Day? Very important pollinators, baby. If you don’t already have a native pollinator -friendly yard or landscape, this is absolutely the time to start planting grasses and plants to help those busy bees (and hummingbirds) thrive.
You can find a list of native pollinator plants by state or region , and grab some seeds at your local nursery or home and landscape store.
Visit a national park.
A visit to a national park is an opportunity to enjoy nature, protect the planet, and celebrate time with friends, family, and fellow park-goers. Of course, make sure you take good care of your public lands when you visit!

Spend time in nature.
The easiest way to celebrate this special day is by spending time in the great outdoors. Take a picnic to a local park, swing in a hammock (responsibly), go on a hike, or even pogo-stick to your heart’s content.
Whichever way you choose to breathe in the fresh air, nature is calling.
Highlight Earth Day in your company newsletter or blog.
Instead of using your company emails or website to highlight a sale or promotion, consider using it as an opportunity to discuss the importance of climate action.
Include action items, celebration opportunities, and more, for your team, customers, and community to learn more about protecting the planet.
Please feel free to share, quote, and link to this article as a resource in your newsletter or on your blog!
Enforce eco-friendly policies and practices in the workplace.
Nominate yourself as your workplace’s resident Earth Lover, and help implement eco-friendly practices in the office. Compostable kitchenware in the break room? Getting rid of meat at company events? Investments in solar power? Helping your employees commute sustainably ? Energy efficient tech swaps? Printer restrictions to conserve paper and energy? The world is your oyster!
Get certified by 1% for the Planet, Climate Neutral, or B Corp.

20 Earth Day activities that'll remind kids and adults how precious our planet is
More than one billion people participate in Earth Day , making it the largest civic observance in the world.
This year, make sure you join in on the action.
Celebrated annually on April 22, Earth Day is a welcome reminder to give our planet some much-needed TLC to ensure a better, healthier future. That means, you should carve out time to reassess your own carbon footprint and commit to making eco-friendly lifestyle changes. You can also turn it into a teachable moment for kids , helping them better understand the importance of taking care of the planet for all the generations to come.
There are so many different ways you can make an impact on Earth Day — and all the weeks, months and years to follow. From planning an eco-friendly picnic to participating in a yard sale, we’ve rounded up a bunch of fun Earth Day activities for you and your family to show your appreciation for Mother Nature.
Take a virtual field trip
Spend the day traveling the globe without even needing to pack a suitcase. Stop by the Channel Islands in California , Old Faithful Geyser in Yellowstone National Park and the Statue of Liberty in New York City — without even leaving your house. Just fire up your tablet or computer, and take in all the natural beauty that the world has to offer.
Write an Earth Day pledge
Take a moment to come up with all the ways — big or small — that you can turn Earth Day into Earth Year. Come up with a bunch of actionable ways that will encourage your entire household to care for our planet 24/7, 365. Some thought-starters: turning off the lights when you leave a room and taking shorter showers.
Look out for the bees
Several species of bees are endangered due to deforestation, harmful pesticides and climate change. Preserve what's left by reducing pesticide use, filling your garden with pollinators and supporting local beekeepers. And perhaps, you buy your own hive and raise some honeybees of your own.
Make seed bombs
Soak paper scraps in water, shred them and combine the pulp with seeds until it forms a ball. Once dry, plant them in a flower pot or straight in the garden, then watch 'em grow. A tip: Wildflower seeds are your best bet since they germinate easily (and you'll be able to take in their beauty just weeks after planting).
Want to make seed bombs that resemble the Earth? Follow this tutorial from Little Bins for Little Hands.
Go camping in your backyard
Grab s’mores ingredients and head to your backyard for a night in nature. Take in the night sky and stargaze with your little ones before they head to bed. After all, immersing yourself in the outdoors is one of the best ways to appreciate all it has to offer.
Play a nature-themed bingo game
Take the fun outside and see who can exclaim bingo first! Make your own cards with with nature images like different kinds of trees, plants, flowers, bugs, birds and furry creatures.
Attend a yoga class
Take a yoga class to not only connect with yourself, but the world around you. Chances are you'll find yourself in tree, mountain and waterfall pose s throughout class, which take on a whole new meaning on Earth Day. While you're at it, look for classes designed for kids so they can get their om on too.
Make art out of recyclables
Turn trash into treasures by using materials from the recycling bin to create Earth Day masterpieces. Try making a picture of a tree out of egg cartons by cutting and painting the individual egg cups green and gluing them onto a canvas. Just add a brown trunk and any finishing touches.
Or get some Mod Podge and decoupage an empty jar with blue and green tissue paper to make a pencil holder that'll help you remember the day.
Paint flower pots and plant seeds
Want to get your kid's creative juices flowing? Paint one of their hands blue and stamp it on a plain flower pot. Take a paint brush and add some green markings on the handprint until it resembles the Earth. Or skip the blue paint altogether and use their fingerprints to form flower petals or ladybugs. Once it's dry, fill it with soil and seeds to turn this craft project into a science experiment.
Bake Earth Day-inspired cookies
Earth Day cookies will be fun for the kids to make and even more fun for them to eat. Make your favorite sugar cookie recipe fit for the occasion by tinting half the batch blue and other half green. Then take bits of each batch of colored dough to form a ball into a delicious worldly creation. Talk about a sweet way to honor Mother Nature!
Have a nature scavenger hunt
Search for natural wonders in your own backyard (think: a flower, squirrel, moss and so on). Give each scavenger a clipboard to keep track of their findings and a magnifying glass to really investigate their surroundings
Read thought-provoking books
Head to the library with your little environmentalists. From classics like “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss or “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein to loads of newer titles about sustainability, pick up a bunch of planet-friendly books for kids of all ages.
Ground yourself
Kick off your shoes and give grounding a try. The practice, which many document on TikTok with the hashtag #grounding , has amassed almost 300 million views. But come to find out, it’s actually centuries old and suggests that direct contact of skin to the Earth’s natural electric charge offers a host of health benefits.
Assemble an inspired charcuterie board
If a culinary celebration is more your thing, jump on the charcuterie board trend and use your imagination to honor Mother Earth. Design a plant-forward board with fruits, vegetables, nuts, hummus, crackers, and dairy-free cheese. Or if you have a sweet tooth, make an Earth-themed dessert board by arranging cookies in the shape of the earth, flowers and butterflies. Finish it off with gummy worms, sharks, frogs and fish.
Host a yard sale
Reduce, reuse and recycle. Host a yard sale — either solo or with neighbors — to give items you no longer use a new home.If you really want to go the extra mile, donate some of the profits to a local or national environmental cause that’s meaningful to you.
Show off your green thumb
There are endless ways to create an eco-friendly space that will extend long past Earth Day itself. Plant a tree, assemble indoor herb container or designate part of your yard as a pollinator or butterfly garden.
Adopt an endangered animal
Beloved animals like gorillas, rhinos and elephants are facing extinction due to habitat loss caused by deforestation, pollution, lack of food sources, overhunting and more. Look for organizations to sponsor or adopt endangered animals or if you want to make a difference without dipping into your wallet, sign an online petition to help protect these species for future generations.
Make a homemade bird feeder
Nurture your natural environment by creating a bird feeder for your winged neighbors. Simply fill empty milk cartons or plastic water bottles with bird seed. Watching feathered friends flock to the yard is bound to make your little ones smile with excitement (you, too!).
Start composting
Start saving those scraps! Incorporate the eco-friendly practice of composting into your regular household routine. Not only does it lighten the load at the landfill, but it'll make nutrient rich fetilizer for your garden. Find a method that works best for you and your family, whether you start small with a pail for banana peels or go all-out with an electric composter.
Go paperless
Help preserve trees by reducing your dependency on paper. Spend time on Earth Day switching settings so financial and bank statements are sent to you online rather than through the mail. Then think about how you can make this practice part of your everyday going forward, whether it's paying bills electronically, opting for emailed receipts rather than printed ones or even using a digital planner.

Earth Day support: Environmental Topics Design Tips & Examples
- April 20, 2021
- Industry-specific presentations , PowerPoint templates for download , Sustainability, ESG, Climate
Isn’t something wrong with our way of life? I see how most of the business activities and presentations as well, are focusing only on producing and selling more. But where does this consumption focus and belief in ever-lasting growth lead us? Can’t we do better, to care about our planet not only about profit? What can I do as a presentation designer to help? Read on to learn a few slide design tips on how you can present various environmental care topics effectively.
I ask these questions a lot recently, where businesses and society are heading. Maybe it started with this eye-opening book “Sapiens, A Brief History of Humankind” by Yuval Harari. Fortunately, I also notice a slowly rising awareness of environmental issues. I work with more and more presentations that promote changes towards sustainability.
On the occasion of Earth Day, I’d like to share a few slide design tips on how you can present various environmental care topics better.
As a presentation consultant, I would like to support presenters that talk about green projects, ecology, or sustainability topics. To help them share their message with an impact. Therefore I put together a few design tips that will help you make your slides look professional and stunning.
1. Do proper data research before the presentation
If you are about to create a presentation from scratch, it’s worth having a sound ground for the facts you plan to present. Pick up your data carefully. Today in the era of fake news and distorted statistics data it is important to base your presentation on reliable sources. Information sources from recognized international institutions, academic research papers,s or a university group are usually more trustworthy than information from an article in a tabloid newspaper or a social media post.
We can learn from an academic area, how to work with information sources. State clearly a list of references, to be transparent on your data. Properly done research papers require to have a peer review by some independent scientist.
In the context of presentation slides, a good practice is to mention a source of your fact right on the slide. Add a year as well, to show your research is up to date.
2. Organize your facts to clear presentation structure
To ensure proper understanding and impact of your message, give your presentation a sound structure.
If you are going to have longer content, organize it into blocks. You can use a classical “hamburger” structure:
- Think about how to start to attract attention. For that choose an attractive title. Follow with a quote or facts.
- Then develop each point, analyze reasons and show impact.
- Finish with wrapping it up, summarize main facts, and present the next steps.
Here are examples of agenda and section slides. Such slides define the structure of a presentation, especially if it’s a long one.
3. Present the content visually on a slide, avoid long blocks of text
To keep the attention of your audience, avoid lengthy texts as much as you can.
I know lots of resources come from scientific papers. For example, a famous IPCC Report on Global Warming is a great source material but not in a very attractive form. To use those facts in a presentation you need to extract the essence and present it visually.
If you want to pass your message to the general population, you need to make it easier to understand. Add stories, examples, and illustrations people can relate to.
Below I show a few visualization ways you can use to replace text with visual.
Choosing a proper visual depends on your slide content. Take a minute, analyze what kind of information you present and then replace or enrich it with fitting graphics.
1st slide type: Text about a process? Show it by flowchart diagram.
It can be simple series of blocks and arrows or you can enhance it graphically.
2nd slide type: Set of arguments can be presented as a list diagram.
If you already have bullet points in your material, present them in a visual form instead.
3rd slide type: Presenting numbers as infographics
Try to replace data tables at least with a chart. To make it more attractive you can enrich it with additional illustrations. You can illustrate categories by icons, use colors associated with nature (green, yellow, orange). Keep in mind that clarity is important here. Every decoration supports the information, doesn’t distract too much.
4. Finish presentation with clear next steps
Once you presented the problem, supported it with facts, it’s time to wrap it up. Tell what shall we do about it. Be clear in presenting the next steps. Whether it’s a single action or specific project steps, show it on a separate slide. Underline this is a final takeaway that people should walk out from your presentation.
Make such a slide stand out from the rest. You can use a full slide photograph as a background or use reverted color for a slide – if your presentation used white slides, use the color background here or vice versa.

Earth Day activities to inspire your students and make a difference
Earth Day is about raising awareness about the importance of protecting our planet and taking action. The first Earth Day came about after a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson, saw the devastating impact of a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Not willing to sit on the sidelines anymore, Senator Nelson organized a national “teach in” to educate and inspire people to protect the environment.
Since the first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, it has generated public support for the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as environmental laws such as the Clean Air Act, the Water Quality Improvement Act, and the Endangered Species Act.
Here’s a quick (3-minute) introduction to how Earth Day started and the impact it’s had:
Earth Day 2022
Earth Day will be held April 22, 2022 and the theme is Invest In Our Planet —because a green future is a prosperous future.
Just in time to support Earth Day this year, PLT has released a new, cutting-edge resource for elementary and middle school educators, Explore Your Environment: K-8 Activity Guide . Learn about the guide’s 50 field-tested, hands-on activities and get a copy directly from PLT’s Shop or by attending a local PLT professional development workshop conducted by PLT’s 50-state network of 75 coordinators and 1,000 facilitators across the country.
Another way teachers and parents can observe Earth Day is to simply take children on a nature walk, whether that’s in your backyard, at a local park, on a nearby forest trail, or on school grounds, depending on what’s accessible in your area at this time. Doing a nature walk is not only about celebrating Earth Day. It’s also an opportunity for learning experiences in a variety of subjects such as science, geography, math, and art. Make your nature walk educational and fun at the same time with these 12 Nature Walk Activities for Earth Day (or Any Day!)
Also, be sure to bookmark our Earth Day News Article full of fun ideas and activities to help you celebrate.
Even though Earth Day has a rich history, many people associate it with recycling. You’ll probably find a lot of Earth Day activities for the classroom that focus on just that. This can be a great starting point, especially because it’s an action students, schools, and families can do right away. If you want to incorporate activities on recycling in your Earth Day lesson plan, be sure to check out these reduce, reuse, recycle lesson plan ideas for every subject .
Young students can, and do, make a big difference. As an educator, you have the opportunity to spark a passion in students that will drive them to do their part to take care of the Earth. Here are a few different kinds of activities you could add to your lesson plans to inspire your students this Earth Day:
Make a pledge and a plan to take action
Writing down a commitment and making a plan are two actions that increase the likelihood that someone will follow through. So if you want those Earth Day lessons to stick, this is an easy activity to do with students of any age. This is a great way to incorporate an art project with a writing prompt.
Here are a few examples:
Integrate art projects
Art projects are fun way to add a hands-on activity to a lesson about Earth Day. Creating art can also help students feel connected to environmental topics, even if the issues you’re studying are happening far away from home. It’s also a great way to help them imagine the world they want to live in.
Here are a few examples of art projects for Earth Day:
Also, be sure to check out these art project ideas using recycled materials and Earth Day art activities .
Make signs for school and at home
Sometimes we just need a little reminder to help us change our habits. Have students think about what they can do at school and at home to help the environment and how they can encourage others to change their habits.
Make a video or presentation urging others to take action
Students can make a bigger impact if they influence others to do their part to protect the environment. Putting together a video or presentation also helps them internalize the material – they need to understand it before they can explain it to others. Presentations can be given in the classroom or even to the whole school. Eventually, they may be able to present their lessons and research at a local conference, like these students from Two Rivers Magnet Middle School in East Hartford, Conn.
Plant a tree
The Earth Day Network has a goal of planting 7.8 billion trees by 2020 – one tree for every person alive. By planting trees, you’re taking a tangible action with your students and you’re taking part in this bigger goal. Don’t forget to check out these tree planting tips before you get started.
Engage students in a pollution experiment
Teaching about pollution is an essential part of Earth Day because it helps students understand the consequences of not protecting the Earth. It can be much easier to prevent pollution than to remedy it later. Students can experience the effects of pollution on a small scale in the classroom.
An activity for younger students:
See more types of pollution experiments you can do in your classroom and check out PLT’s “Pollution Search” activity .
Pick up trash around your school
Trash clean-ups are another hands-on activity you don’t even have to leave the school grounds to do. To make a bigger impact, have students write down what kinds of trash they pick up and where. After analyzing the data together, you can find patterns and explore solutions so you can stop the trash at the source.
In fact, there’s a new app that can help you do just that. Check out Litterati , the app that makes it fun to pick up littler and helps prevent litter:
Host a drive to collect e-waste
E-waste is a growing problem in the U.S. and around the world. E-waste represents more than 70% of toxic waste in landfills. So it’s probably not surprising that only 12.5% of e-waste is recycled.
This is an opportunity for your students to help raise awareness about this problem within our school and community. Students can research a nearby recycling facility and organize a drive to collect e-waste to help combat this problem in your community.
Show them examples of other students making a real difference
It’s important for students to see examples of young environmentalists so they know they don’t need to wait until they’re older to make a difference. These inspiring examples of young environmentalists is a great place to start, and there are many more young people doing great work. Learning about the work these young people are doing can give your students new ideas for how to protect the environment. It can open the door of possibilities for how to think about finding solutions to problems they can help solve.
Earth Day isn’t just on April 22. It’s every day. How will you celebrate Earth Day and help students make a difference year-round?

50 Fun Earth Day Crafts and Activities Using Upcycled Materials
Save the earth, make art.
Earth Day is fast approaching (April 22), though there really is never a bad time to celebrate Mother Earth. It’s important to teach students the environmental benefits of recycling, like conserving energy and natural resources and reducing air and water pollution, all year long. While recycling breaks down old items in order to create something new, upcyling makes something new from an existing object in its current state. Challenge your students to create something unique and wonderful from preexisting items like magazines, plastic water bottles, tin cans, egg cartons, and more. Check out our list of the best recycled crafts for Earth Day or any day, and give some of them a try!
1. Make wildflower seed bombs
Give back to Mother Earth with these easy-to-make seed bombs. Blend together used scraps of construction paper, water, and wildflower seeds in a food processor, then form them into tiny muffins. Let them dry, then toss them in the ground. As the seed bombs receive sun and rain, the paper will eventually compost and the seeds will germinate.
Learn more: Learn How To Make Seed Bombs
2. Put together nature wreaths
Take your kids on a nature walk to gather interesting leaves, flowers, berries, and the like. To make the wreath forms, braid together strips of old T-shirts and form them into a circle. Then attach natural items into the crevices and secure with clear fishing line or hot glue. Attach a ribbon at the top to hang your wreath.

3. Construct a bug hotel
Create a cozy place for all the creepy-crawlies to hang out. Cut a two-liter plastic bottle into two cylinders, then stuff it with sticks, pine cones, bark, or any other natural material. Make sure to pack the organic material tightly. Then loop a piece of twine or yarn around the two cylinders and hang your bug hotel from a tree branch or fence.

4. Make a quilt
Textiles make up a huge portion of municipal solid waste—over 16 million tons per year. Teach your kids to repurpose old material that would otherwise end up in the landfill by putting together a cozy quilt.
Learn more: Create a Classroom Quilt
5. Use magazines to create a bowl
We love Earth Day crafts that result in a practical object you can use around the house. This project is best for older students who have the patience and dexterity necessary to carefully roll their magazine strips and glue them together.

6. Create a planet Earth craft
Pay tribute to our lovely planet on Earth Day with these fuzzy moss balls. Kids who love getting their hands dirty will particularly love this craft. All you do is squish pre-soaked sphagnum moss into a tight ball, wrap it tightly with blue yarn or strips of discarded T-shirts, layer more moss and more yarn, etc., until you’ve created an Earth-shaped orb. Finish with a loop of yarn and hang it in a sunny window. To keep your moss ball healthy, simply spray it with water every couple of days.

They include searching for ladybugs in the name of science, making fun tree rubbings, and, yes, even enjoying an ice cream cone. Work in as many as you can because the planet is counting on you.
And if you need even more ideas, these easy Earth Day-themed crafts can be a great way to educate kids about being green.
Things to Do on Earth Day
Have an earth day reading marathon..
Check out a handful of environmentally themed kids’ books from your local library and work in time for reading throughout the day. Bonus points if you do it outside! Several child-tested stories with an environmental component won a Good Housekeeping Kids’ Book Award .

Hello, Puddle!
Organize a clothing swap..
Does your family have outgrown kids’ clothes, gently-used pieces that aren’t your style anymore or even new items that you’ve never gotten around to returning? On Earth Day, gather a group of your besties or neighbors and invite them to a clothing swap at your place or potentially a community center. Set some ground rules — like the minimum and maximum number of items each person should bring and whether you’re focusing on a specific season. When possible, display clothes on a rack. Hopefully, guests will walk away with some new pieces for the season. Donate any leftovers from the swap to a local organization.
Cook a plant-based meal.
A study from Yale University found that plant-based diets produce 75% less water pollution and heat-trapping gas than diets that contain about 3 to 4 ounces of meat. On Earth Day, try a new plant-based recipe .
Help remove trash from your local park or beach.
Removing these items means they'll be one less piece of trash for birds, turtles or whales to swallow. Clean-ups are taking place all over the world. Find one or register yours at The Great Global Cleanup.
Count penguins.
The Penguin Watch project needs citizens to count penguins in photos from Antarctica, so researchers can better understand the creature's lives and environment. Cozy up on the couch and do your Earth Day good deed.
Collect items from nature.
Pick up sticks, rocks, feathers, pine cones and other natural finds in your backyard or at a nearby park, and challenge your child to use them — along with some other materials they already have — to make an art project.
Give yourself time to organize.
Stash extra tote bags in your truck — it's so easy to walk out of the house without them! And while you're at it, put a few refillable water bottles back there. Then set aside time to meal-plan for the week because that's a strategy that will cut way back on food waste.
Get the kids a mud kitchen.
Buy a second-hand play kitchen — or look for one on your local Buy Nothing group — and keep it outside for the kids to make mud pies and other messy creations. The fun sensory play will allow your kids to feel more connected to nature.
Make a special Earth Day snack.
For kids ages 4 and older, spoon hummus into the bottom of a small cup, then stand up veggie sticks, like carrots and celery, so they look like they're planted. For a big wow, you could throw a gummy worm in there!
Go out after dark.
Allow the kids to stay up a little later than usual to look for caterpillars. Bring a flashlight outside and try to spy inchworms and caterpillars hanging from silk threads in trees.
Visit a state park.
Since many national parks are overcrowded, plan a vacation (or day trip) that involves visiting one or more state parks instead.
Set up an Earth Day countdown.
Reuse your Christmas countdown calendar for Earth Day. Give your child a daily "gift" from nature, such as a cool pebble, seashell or wildflower pedal.
Feed the birds.
Birds are important for pollinating wildflowers! Help keep them nourished with a bird feeder. Buy one that has a suction cup that sticks to the window so you can spend time seeing the various species up close and personal. If you're not sure what kind of birds are stopping by, download the Audubon Bird Guide app .
Look for ladybugs.
Some species of ladybugs are becoming rare. Help scientists find out what species of ladybugs are local to you by participating in The Lost Ladybug Project.
Spend the afternoon in the garden.
Maximize your time by planting perennials that bloom every year. Here are 30 ideas for varieties based on your climate.
Create fun crayons.
Turn your kid's old, broken crayons into fun shapes that they'll love using to draw. The Paper & Stitch blog has a step-by-step tutorial. Your kids can help with some of the steps, such as separating crayons by color.
Plant a tree.
Oaks, birch and willow trees are among the species that support wildlife the most. Even if you have a small yard, there's probably enough room for a tree.
Attend an Earth Day celebration.
Mingle with fellow stewards of the environment. Cities across the country are celebrating Earth Day with festivals that feature eco marketplaces, farmers' markets, green car shows, and live entertainment. One of the longest-running and largest Earth Day festivals is taking place in Santa Barbara on April 27-28.
Level up your recycling game.
You know how to recycle plastic bottles. But how about some trickier household items, like batteries, old cell phones and appliances? Keep some of the 140 tons of waste that ends up in landfills every year. On Earth Day, check out our guide on to properly dispose of almost every kind of item you can imagine.
Make tree bark rubbings.
Take the kids outside with pieces of recycled paper, crayons and tape. Tape the paper to a tree trunk and encourage kids to rub their crayons over the paper. Repeat with different kinds of trees. Then ask the kids to compare. Put their favorite on the fridge!
Start with a smoothie.
Kick off Earth Day with a green smoothie. This pineapple cucumber smoothie from the Good Housekeeping Test Kitchen is particularly delicious.
Sketch outside.
Set aside one of your notebooks as a nature journal, reflecting on the wildlife you see in your backyard or your community. Sketch plants and animals, write poems, doodle — fill the pages with whatever style suits you best. The important part: Carving out the time to observe nature.
Get an ice cream cone.
When you opt for a scoop in a cone, you're saving a paper or plastic cup that may end up in landfill.
Ride your bike.
Leave the car parked and do one Earth Day errand by pedaling. Just don't forget your helmet.
Take the kids on a scavenger hunt.
Make a list of items for older kids to find at the park or on a hike. You might even want to theme the hunt to look for items of a certain texture or color.
