Republic Day is observed in India every year on January 26. India lived under British colonisation for hundreds of years. After many years of freedom struggle, India got its independence in 1947. Around two and half years later, India became a Democratic Republic. On January 26 1950, the Consitution of India came into effect. On this day, our motherland was declared a Sovereign, Secular, Socialistic, and Democratic Republic. It means the people of India have the power to choose the government for the country. To commemorate this grand event in the history of the country, this day is celebrated as Republic Day ever since. Our Constitution was written by a committee headed by Dr B.R. Ambedkar. In India, Republic Day is celebrated as a national festival. The biggest celebration happens in the capital city, New Delhi.

The President of India hoists the National Flag, and the Indian Armed Forces, including the Army, Navy and Airforce organise a parade. The celebrations include the flag hoising ceremony where the tri-colour is unfurled. The military band plays the National Anthem along with a 21 gun salute to honour the lives lost in the freedom struggle. People also pay their tributes to all the freedom fighters who became martyrs for the nation. Military Bands of all the regiments, NCC Cadets, and ex-army men also join the parade. Tableaus from all the states of India are displayed after the parade. It showcases India’s rich ‘Unity and Diversity’ culture. Folk dances and other performances are also exhibited by the participants and army personnel during the celebrations. Republic Day is a Significant Moment in India's History

26 th January is celebrated as Republic Day in our country. On this day in 1950, the constitution of our country was formally adopted and India became a fully sovereign state. The fundamental law of the country, the Constitution, was enacted out of the diligence and hard work of great men like Mahatma Gandhi and the numerous freedom fighters who fought and sacrificed their lives for the independence of our country. So, the 26 th of January was declared a National holiday and has been recognized and celebrated as the Republic Day of India ever since.

After Independence, the country did not have any self-made official Constitution, instead, its laws were based on modified colonial acts. So, establishing an official constitution for our own country was the utmost task in front of the Government of India. Our constitution is the result of the hard work and struggle of the esteemed members of the Constituent Assembly under the Presidency of Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Dr. Ambedkar was the Father of our Constitution. After deeply studying the various constitutions of other countries, our founding fathers framed our Constitution and it is the lengthiest constitution in the world. It reflects upon the dedication and foresight of these great men. That is how the Constitution came into being. It took two years, eleven months, and eighteen days to complete the Constitution. Though it was enacted and adopted by the constituent assembly on 26 th November 1949, it came into force on 26 th January, 1950.

Significance of 26 th January

It is to be noted that January 26 had a great significance in India’s struggle for Swaraj. The Congress Session at Lahore on December 29, 1929, had passed a resolution declaring Purna Swaraj (Complete Independence) as India’s goal. It was also decided that the 26 th of January should be observed all over India as Purna Swaraj Day. The complete Independence Day was for the first time celebrated on January 26 th, 1930. It continued to be so observed until 1947. On achieving Independence, August 15 became our Independence Day.

January 26 th , however, marked a great event in India’s struggle for freedom. It was, therefore, in the favour of all that January 26 should be selected as the Date of Commencement of the new Constitution.

Therefore, this day is celebrated as a day of national significance with great joy and pride.

How is Republic Day celebrated in India?

Indians celebrate Republic Day with great jubilation and joy all over the country. The day honours India's constitution as an independent nation. Schools and colleges hoist the national flag on Republic Day. Cultural events celebrating India's struggle for independence are organised across the country. An Indian President conducts the parade, which is coordinated by the Ministry of Defence. The event not only displays India's military prowess but also promotes its diverse culture. In addition, the event pays tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives for the country. India's Prime Minister honours the martyrs by placing a ringlet at India Gate's Amar Jawan Jyoti. The ceremony continues with a 21-gun salute, national anthem, and hoisting of the national flag. As a result, the brave soldiers are presented with the Paramvir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, and Vir Chakra. Children and ordinary citizens who have shown courage in difficult circumstances are also recognized with awards.

Those who receive a gallantry award salute the President in gratitude. Then, India's military prowess is on display. There is also a march-past that the armed forces, police, and National Cadet Corps take part in, during which the President of India is saluted by these regiments. When the fighter jets of the Indian Air Force fly past Janpath, the ceremony concludes. The Republic Day celebrations are held across the country, but Delhi is the centre of the largest celebration. Every year, millions of people have the opportunity to watch a live Webcast of the Republic Day Parade. 'Video on demand' is made available after the event as a way to view the exclusive footage. The flag is also unfurled in the state capitals, though on a smaller scale, where the Governor unfurls the flag. At district headquarters, subdivisions, talukas, and panchayats, the celebrations take place in a similar manner.

The official end to the Republic Day celebrations is Beating the Retreat, which takes place after all of the celebrations are over. From 26th to 29th, the government buildings are beautifully lit in glittering lights. On January 29, the third day after Republic Day, the beating retreat ceremony is held. During the Drummer's Call, drummers perform solo performances. The bands march back playing the popular martial tune, Saare Jahan Se Achcha. At exactly 6 p.m., the National Flag is lowered and the National Anthem is sung, marking the end of Republic Day celebrations.

Conclusion

Republic Day is celebrated with much enthusiasm in India, and we should remember the long journey to freedom and the struggles of our forefathers to transform the country into a sovereign nation. History of Republic Day

While we got independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, our country was still lacking a concrete constitution. Moreover, India also did not have any experts and political powers which would help in the functioning of the state affairs smoothly.  Up until then, the 1935 Government of India Act was basically modified in order to govern, however, that act was more bent towards the colonial rule. Therefore, there was a dire need to form an exclusive constitution that would reflect all that India stands for.

Thus, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar led a constitutional drafting committee on August 28, 1947.  After drafting, it was presented to the Constituent Assembly by the same committee on November 4, 1947. This whole procedure was very elaborate and took up to 166 days to complete. Moreover, the committee organized sessions were kept open to the public.

No matter the challenges and hardships, our constitutional committee left no stone unturned to include rights for all. It aimed to create the perfect balance so all citizens of the country could enjoy equal rights pertaining to their religions, culture, caste, sex, creed and more. At last, they presented the official Indian constitution to the country on January 26, 1950.

Moreover, the first session of the India Parliament was also conducted on this day. In addition to that, 26 th January also witnessed the swearing-in of India’s first president, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Thus, this day is very important as it marks the end of the British rule and birth of India as a Republic State.

Essay on Republic Day in English

Every year on January 26, India celebrates Republic Day with great pride and enthusiasm. It is a significant day for all Indian nationals. It commemorates the day India embraced democracy and gained true independence. Put another way, it honors the day when our constitution went into force. Almost three years after gaining our independence, on January 26, 1950, we were proclaimed a democratic, secular, socialist republic.

Republic Day’s History

Even after we gained independence from British colonial rule on August 15, 1947, our nation lacked a formal constitution. Furthermore, India lacked the political will and expertise necessary to ensure the seamless operation of state affairs. Up until then, the 1935 Government of India Act had been essentially changed to facilitate government, but it had been more oriented toward colonial authority. As a result, creating a unique constitution that would uphold everything that India stands for was imperative.

Thus, on August 28, 1947, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar chaired a commission to create a constitution. On November 4, 1947, the same committee presented it to the Constituent Assembly after it had been drafted. The entire process took up to 166 days to finish and was quite intricate. Furthermore, the public was allowed to attend the committee’s scheduled sessions.

Despite all the obstacles and struggles, our constitutional committee made sure that everyone has rights. It sought to strike the ideal balance so that every person of the nation might benefit from equal rights with regard to their caste, sex, creed, religion, culture, and other aspects of their lives. On January 26, 1950, they finally delivered the formal Indian constitution to the nation.

Furthermore, this day also marked the start of the India Parliament’s first session. Furthermore, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the country’s first president, was sworn in on January 26. Because it signifies the end of British control and the establishment of India as a Republic State, this day is therefore immensely significant.

Republic Day Events

Every year on January 26, Indians celebrate with great fervor and excitement. People ignore their sex, caste, religion, and other things on this day. The entire nation comes together as a result. It genuinely demonstrates the diversity of our nation. India’s capital city, New Delhi, commemorates the occasion with a Republic Day Parade that highlights the strength of the Indian military and the diversity of our nation’s cultures.

Numerous schools participate in these marches, which also happen in other cities. Observing the children and experts work so hard is delightful. One can’t help but feel patriotic when they see them grace the procession. On this day, we also hoist the national flag. In New Delhi, the national song is played by the military band and the 21-gun salute occurs after the President of India hoists the flag.

Additionally, March Past is held at schools, and attendance at the festivities is required of all students. On this day, candy is also distributed in a lot of schools. Even though today is a very happy day, we must never forget the fight for freedom that our ancestors endured. In addition, it’s a day to honor the spirit of independence and pledge to support India’s future ascent to greater heights.

Republic Day 2024 Speech in English: 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

The annual celebration of Republic Day, which falls on January 26th, is a major celebration in India. It marks the day when our nation adopted its Constitution, a significant milestone in our history.

The journey towards the adoption of the Constitution began soon after India gained independence on August 15, 1947. A committee was established, and on August 29, 1947, a Constituent Assembly was convened with the task of writing a new Constitution for the country. B.R. Ambedkar was appointed as the leader of this group, and over the course of two years, 11 months, and 18 days, the Constitution was drafted.

On January 26, 1950, the Constitution was officially proclaimed. This day holds a special significance as it is also the day when the proclamation of Poorna Swaraj was made in 1930 and Jawaharlal Nehru was elected as the leader of the Indian National Congress.

While Independence Day is celebrated on August 15, the Indian National Congress had already celebrated it on the same day in 1930, before India officially gained independence in 1947. Therefore, August 15th is observed as Independence Day, and January 26th is celebrated as Republic Day.

During Republic Day celebrations, patriotism and love for our nation are at the forefront. The main celebration takes place in the capital, New Delhi, with a grand parade and the President of India hoisting the national flag and giving a speech. People across the country participate in cultural programs and patriotic events to celebrate this day.

As we celebrate the 73rd Republic Day of our great nation, let us remember the sacrifices of our freedom fighters, the contributions of the Constitution-makers, and pledge to uphold the values and principles of our Constitution.

Republic Day, celebrated annually on January 26th, is a day of great national pride and celebration in India. It marks the day when our nation officially adopted a democratic republic government and declared its independence. On January 26, 1950, India became an independent, secular, socialist, and democratic republic, almost three years after gaining independence from British rule.

The origins of Republic Day can be traced back to August 15, 1947, when India gained independence from British rule. However, at that time, the nation did not have a formal constitution in place to govern the country properly. To address this, a constitutional drafting committee was established on August 28, 1947, with B.R. Ambedkar as its head. The committee, after 166 days of extensive deliberation, presented its final proposal to the Constituent Assembly on November 4, 1947.

One of the main objectives of the drafting committee was to ensure universal protections for all citizens, regardless of their faith, culture, caste, sex, or creed. The Constitution, which was finally adopted on January 26th, 1950, struck a delicate balance between the various interests and aspirations of the people.

On this day, Rajendra Prasad was inaugurated as India's first President, and the first session of the Indian Parliament was held. Republic Day not only marks the end of British rule but also the establishment of the Indian Republic.

Celebrations

The celebrations on Republic Day are a true reflection of the unity and diversity of our nation. The main event takes place in the capital city of New Delhi, with a grand parade showcasing the military might of the country and the richness of our cultural heritage. The President of India hoists the national flag, and the military responds with a 21-gun salute and a performance of the national anthem.

Many schools across the country also participate in these celebrations by organizing marches and cultural programs, which serve as a source of inspiration and pride for the citizens. It's a day when people put aside their differences and come together to celebrate the spirit of unity and nationalism. The participation of both young and adults in these celebrations, from the colourful parades to the patriotic performances, is truly inspiring and makes one feel proud to be a citizen of this great nation. On this Republic Day, let us pledge to uphold the values and principles of our Constitution, and work towards building a stronger and more inclusive nation for all.
