Demystify Coursework Requirements

Some U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service careers require  minimum education requirements  and some of  those  require a specific number of semester or quarter hours in a particular discipline to qualify.

Figuring out which courses satisfy which discipline can be confusing. We’re here to help!

A man holding a jar full of water and tiny silvery fish hatchlngs

Sometimes a course name does not provide enough information to tell Human Resources if a course satisfies a semester hours requirement for a particular discipline.

In cases like this, you can include a letter in your application from your professor or college dean explaining that the course contained particular content. For example, the  Fish Biology Series (0482)  requires a degree with a major in biological science that includes:

  • At least 6 semester hours in aquatic subjects such as limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture, or related courses in the field of fishery biology and
  • At least 12 semester hours in the animal sciences in such subjects as general zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, entomology, parasitology, ecology, cellular biology, genetics, or research in these fields. (Excess coursework in aquatic subjects may be used to meet this requirement when appropriate.)

A woman in a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uniform wading thigh deep into a marsh to release a baby turtle

Suppose you mention in your application that you took a class in wetlands ecology.

A Human Resources specialist who evaluates your application might categorize that class as coursework in aquatic subjects.

But that's not guaranteed, because wetlands ecology is not specifically listed above. (This listing matches the listing that would be in the USAJobs.gov vacancy announcement.)

So, you might want to include a letter indicating this wetlands ecology course would be classified as an aquatic subject for the purposes of this job series.

Watch: Bumblebees push Lego blocks together to gain reward

Bees trained by researchers pushing a Lego block together to access nectar underneath.

University of Oulu

Researchers at the University of Oulu in Finland have successfully recorded cooperative behavior among bees outside their hives. The research also sheds light on the evolution of social intelligence in other animal species. It inspires us to look at the world beyond humans.

Bees are the hardest-working creatures we know. We have also heard tales of how they work towards the colony’s cause and are important to ecosystems as pollinators. However, we have always believed that bees have been naturally programmed to perform actions that benefit the colony.

A new research study under the guidance of Olli Loukola, a behavioral ecologist and an associate professor at the University of Oulu, has now shown that bees don’t just follow orders but can adapt to situations and even collaborate with their peers to solve a particular problem.

Can bees do big-brain tasks?

For years, we have assumed that working cooperatively on a task is a complex phenomenon that requires high-level thinking. It can be performed by mammals such as humans and chimpanzees due to their big brain sizes.

Loukola and his team challenged this notion and worked on training bumblebees to work together. The researchers designed two experiments, one in which the bees had to push a Lego block in the middle of an arena to gain access to nectar below.

The second task was more complex. To get their reward, the bees needed to work together and simultaneously push a door at the end of a transparent tunnel.

The researchers also had a control group in which the bees trained alone on these tasks without a partner to perform them.

How did the bumblebees perform?

The researchers found that the behavior of the bumblebees that had trained with a partner was influenced by their partner’s presence, absence, and direction of movement.

In the first task, if the partner was delayed, the bees took longer to initiate the pushing action. More importantly, the bees only pushed when the partner pushed the Lego block.

The second task was more complex, but if the partner in the transparent tunnel was delayed, the bees would turn around before they reached the door. On their way back, if the bee saw the partner heading in the right direction, they would turn back again and head to the door.

Bees’ turning behavior is a clear sign that they are intentionally working together to complete the task. “Whether bumblebees truly understand the role of their partner will require further research with more detailed monitoring of their behavior during cooperation,” Loukola warned in a press release.

RECOMMENDED ARTICLES

“Our findings show for the first time that bumblebees can learn to solve novel cooperative tasks outside the hive,” the associate professor added. “But the coolest part of this work is that it clearly demonstrates that bumblebee cooperation is socially influenced, and not just driven by individual efforts.”

Researchers are looking to understand cooperative behavior in humans better, and studies such as these can help us understand animal behavior and its evolution as well.

“A better understanding of the complex behavior and abilities of animals can increase interest in environmental protection and animal welfare,” said a hopeful Loukala in the press release .

The research findings were published in the journal, Proceedings of the Royal Society B .
