Reported Speech Exercises for Class 10

When we want to tell somebody else what another person said, we can use either direct speech and reported speech. When we use direct speech, we use the same words but use quotation marks, For example: Scott said, “I am coming to work. I will be late because there is a lot of traffic now.”

When we use reported speech, we usually change the verbs, specific times, and pronouns. For example: Scott said that he was coming to work. He said that he would be late because there was a lot of traffic at that time.

Rules for Reported Speech While changing direct speech into reported speech or vice-versa the following changes occur:

1. Changes In Reporting Verb Affirmative sentences: said, told (object), asserted, replied, assured, informed, responded, whispered, alleged, believed, assumed, thought Interrogative sentences: asked, enquired, wanted to know Imperative sentences: ordered, begged, pleaded, implored, advised, demanded

2. Change Of Pronouns Direct Speech: Johnny said, ‘I am playing.’ Indirect Speech: Johnny said that he was playing. First-person generally changes to third person {depending upon the subject of the reporting verb).

3. Change Of Tenses

Johnny said, ‘I like to play.’ Johnny said that he liked to play.
Johnny said, ‘I am playing.’ Johnny said that he was playing.
Johnny said, ‘I have played this game.’ Johnny said that he had played that game.
Johnny said, ‘I have been playing this game.’ Johnny said that he had been playing that game.
Johnny said, ‘I played this game last week. ’ Johnny said that he had played that game the previous week.
Johnny said, ‘I was playing this game when Mohan came home.’ Johnny said that he had been/was playing that game when Mohan came home.
Johnny said, ‘I had played this game before you came.’ Johnny said that he had played that game before he came.
Johnny said, ‘I will play this game.’ Johnny said that he would play that game.

In general, present tense becomes past tense; past tense and present perfect become past perfect.

4. Change of situations Example: Nagesh said, ‘I read this book last week. (direct speech) Nagesh said that he had read that book the previous week, (indirect speech)

  • ‘this’ becomes ‘that’
  • ‘last week’ becomes ‘the previous week’
  • here – there
  • now – then
  • today – that day
  • yesterday – the day before/the previous day
  • tomorrow – the next day/the coming day
  • last week – the week before/the previous week
  • next month – the next month/the coming month

5. In case of questions and answers Examples:

  • Nagesh asked, ‘Have you read this book?’ (direct speech)
  • Nagesh asked if’ whether I had read that book, (indirect speech)
  • Nagesh asked, ‘Where is the book?’ (direct speech)
  • Nagesh asked where the book was. (indirect speech)

(a) For yes/no questions – use if/whether (b) For wh- questions – use the wh-word

Word Order:

  • Nagesh asked, ‘What’s the matter?’
  • Nagesh asked what the matter was. (what + the matter + was)
  • Nagesh asked what was the matter, (what + was + the matter)
  • The word order can be either:
  • who/which/what + complement + be or ‘
  • who/which/what + be + complement

6. Reported Speech using present and future tenses Examples:

  • Nagesh said, ‘The sun rises in the east.’ (direct speech)
  • Nagesh said that the sun rises in the east, (indirect speech)
  • Nagesh said, ‘I will read this book.’ (direct speech)
  • Nagesh said that he will read that book, (indirect speech)
  • If the original speaker’s present and future is still present and future, the tense remains unchanged.

7. In case of modal verbs can becomes could

  • will – would
  • shall – should
  • may – might

would, should, could, might, ought to and must are unchanged. Example:

  • Nagesh said, ‘I can solve this sum.’ (direct speech)
  • Nagesh said that he could solve that sum. (indirect speech)

3. Change Of Tenses

Reporting of the words of a speaker in one’s own words is called Narration. There are two ways of reporting what people say: Direct Speech and Indirect Speech. Direct Speech. The actual words of the speaker using quotation marks are called Direct Speech. Indirect Speech. When we convey the speaker’s words in our own words it becomes Indirect Speech. It is the reporting of speakers’ words, using a saying or asking verbs. In indirect, verbs giving or asking for instructing are often used with a to-infinitive construction. Verbs expressing intention may also be followed by a to-infinitive.

There are basically four types of sentences in which we can convert direct speech into Indirect speech.

  • Assertive Sentences (Statements)
  • Interrogative Sentences (Questions)
  • Imperative Sentences (Commands and Requests)
  • Exclamatory Sentences (Strong Feelings)

To convert a Direct speech into an Indirect speech, we have to make some necessary changes. Change No.1. Remove the commas and inverted commas. Use any conjunction.

Change No.2. In Reported Speech, there are some words which show nearness, but they are always converted into words which show distance.

They are as follows:

now becomes then
this becomes that
these becomes those
today becomes that day
tonight becomes that night
yesterday becomes the previous day
last night becomes the previous night
last week becomes the previous week
tomorrow becomes the following day
next week becomes the following week
ago becomes before
thus becomes so

Note. ‘Come’ is changed into ‘go’ only in that case when any word showing nearness is given with it. Change No. 3. Change of Person. There are three types of Person in English language which are as follows:

Change No. 4. If the reporting verb is in Present or in Future Tense, there is no change in the tense of the Reported Speech. If the reporting verb is in Past Tense, there is always a change in the tense of the Reported Speech, which is as follows:

  • Present Indefinite is changed into Past Indefinite
  • Present Continuous is changed into Past Continuous
  • Present Perfect is changed into Past Perfect
  • Present Perfect Continuous is changed into Past Perfect Continuous
  • Past Indefinite is changed into Past Perfect
  • Past Continuous is changed into Past Perfect Continuous
  • Past Perfect and Past Perfect Continuous remain unchanged

In case of Future Tense, there are only four words which are changed, i.e.

will becomes would
shall becomes should
may becomes might
can becomes could

Changes based on the types of sentences.

1. Assertive Sentences (Statements) Change No. 1. Remove the commas and inverted commas. Use conjunction ‘that’. Change No. 2. Change the reporting verb ‘say into tell’, ‘says into tell’, ‘said into told’, if the reporting object is given in the sentence. But do not change the reporting verb if the reporting object is not given in the sentence. Change No. 3. ‘Said to’ can be changed into told, replied, informed, stated, added, remarked, asserted, assured, reminded, complained, and reported, according to the meaning. Change No. 4. Always remove “to’ from the reporting speech, e.g.

  • He said to me, “I cannot help you in this matter.” He told me that he could not help me in that matter.
  • He said, “My sister’s marriage comes off next month.” He said that his sister’s marriage would come off the following month.

2. Interrogative Sentences (Questions)

Change No. 1. Change the reporting verb ‘said ‘or ‘said to’into‘ asked’ or ‘inquired of’. In case of a single question, change it into ‘asked’ but in case of more than one question, change it into “inquired of’. Change No. 2. Use conjunction ‘if’ or ‘whether’ if the reported speech starts with a helping verb. But do not use any conjunction if the reported speech starts with an interrogative word. Change No. 3. Change the Interrogative sense into an Assertive sense. Change No. 4. Remove ‘?’ question mark and use ‘ . ‘full stop, e.g.

  • She said to her servant, “Is tea ready for me?” She asked her servant if tea was ready for her.
  • She asked me, “Who teaches you English?” She asked me who taught me English.

3. Imperative Sentences (Commands and Requests)

Change No. 1. Change the reporting verb‘said’ or ‘said to’ into ordered, commanded, requested, advised, warned, forbade, suggested, encouraged, persuaded, begged, etc. according to the sense. Change No. 2. Remove the commas and inverted commas, use conjunction ‘to’. Change No. 3. Change the Imperative sense into Infinitive sense. Change No. 4. Remove ‘do not and use ‘not to’ in case of Negative Imperative sentences, e.g.

  • The teacher said to me, “Stand up on the bench.”. The teacher ordered me to stand up on the bench.
  • The General said to the soldiers, “March forward and attack the foe.” The General ordered the soldiers to march forward and attack the foe.
  • The gardener said to the boys, “Do not pluck the flowers.” The gardener forbade the boys from plucking the flowers.

4. Exclamatory Sentences (Strong Feelings)

Change No. 1. Change the reporting verb ‘said’ or ‘said to’ into “exclaimed with joy’ or ‘exclaimed with sorrow’, ‘cry out, “pray’, etc., according to the sense, i.e.

  • Exclaimed with joy–in case of Aha! Ha! Hurrah!
  • Exclaimed with sorrow–in case of Ah! Alas!
  • Exclaimed with surprise–in case of Oh! What! How!
  • Exclaimed with regret–in case of Sorry!
  • Exclaimed with contempt–in case of Pooh! Pshaw!
  • Applauded with saying–in case of Bravo! Hear!

Change No. 2. Use very or great by removing what or how. Change No. 3. Use conjunction ‘that. Change No. 4. Remove exclamatory word and exclamation sign ‘!’ The student must select the verb best suited to the sense or context, e.g.

  • They said, “Hurrah! We have won the match.” They exclaimed with joy that they had won the match.
  • She said, “Alas! I have lost my bridal ring.” She exclaimed with sorrow that she had lost her bridal ring.
  • She said, “How charming the scenery is!” She exclaimed with surprise that it was a very charming scenery.

Word Order:

The word order can be either:

who/which/what + complement + be or who/which/what + be + complement

6. Reported Speech using present and future tenses Examples:

If the original speaker's present and future is still present and future, the tense remains unchanged.

What is Reported Speech

Reported speech, also called indirect speech, is when you tell what someone said without using their exact words. When we use reported speech, the tense, pronouns, and sometimes the word order might change to fit the new context. For example, if John said, “I am going to the party,” in reported speech, we say, “John said that he was going to the party.” We change “am” to “was” because it’s in the past, and “I” becomes “he” to match the reporting clause. Reported speech helps us share information indirectly, which is handy for summarizing conversations or retelling stories.

Donald Trump could be re-elected as US president in November, and he has previously cast doubt on whether they should provide funding for Ukraine's defence.

As Sir Keir Starmer and NATO allies head to Washington DC for a key summit, we asked armed forces minister Luke Pollard if they are concerned about a drop in support for Ukraine if Trump is re-elected.

He replied: "We want all our allies to be supporting Ukraine. That's our expectation.

"And we'll work with every single one of them, regardless of political stripe, to make sure they do so, because Ukraine's security is all our security.

"It's important for the United Kingdom as indeed it is for United States, that Russia does not win in Ukraine, because if they do win in Ukraine, they won't stop with Ukraine."

Keeping the world safe "means every country, NATO, supporting that effort, which they are, and I expect them to continue to do so".

Sir Keir Starmer has refused to say when the UK will raise defence spending to 2.5% of GDP as he heads to NATO to urge other allies to raise their own spending.

We've just been speaking to armed forces minister Luke Pollard, and we asked for a bit more clarity.

He told us: "We've committed to increase defence spending to 2.5%, and the first step in that is a strategic defence review that will look at the capabilities that we need to deter the aggression that the UK and our allies are facing.

"That strategic defence review will be launched next week.

"We need that review to set out, importantly, what we want to spend that increased defence spending on, and in what sequence that will be spent." 

Mr Pollard said the review would conclude "within the next year".

"We need it to be as urgent as we can. That's why we will be delivering this at pace, as fast as we can," he added. 

He agreed with Sky's Kay Burley that the money to improve our defence capabilities is needed now - but explained that the defence review was needed to decide where that new money should be best spent.

Burley then put to him that the Labour Party didn't do any homework before arriving in office, which is why another year was needed. 

He rejected that, saying: "In opposition, you don't get access to the classified briefings or the intelligence that would be required to set out what size and shape our armed forces should be."

On a more immediate basis, the minister said the government was addressing the "retention and recruitment crisis" to ensure joining the armed forces was easier, and their housing was improved.

The UK is in a relatively unusual position as Sir Keir Starmer jets off for his first NATO summit as prime minister.

Given the struggles of Joe Biden, Emmanuel Macron, and some other Western leaders, our  US correspondent Mark Stone   says the prime minister comes to Washington DC looking relatively strong given his enormous election win.

"Politically he is in a much stronger position than many colleagues he will meet," says Stone, who'll be at the summit.

Sir Keir will be among the leaders of the 31 other NATO members for a summit being described "as the biggest event of its kind for three decades" given the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Stone says that sometimes in politics "timing is luck" - "and it's certainly luck for Starmer that so soon after he took office, he is in Washington".

He'll also meet Joe Biden at the White House while he's in town.

Sir Keir Starmer will tell NATO allies that the UK has a "cast iron commitment" to lifting the UK's defence spending to 2.5% of GDP, but is refusing to honour that commitment in his first term in government.

On a flight over to Washington, where NATO allies are gathering for the  alliance's 75th anniversary , the prime minister insisted that hitting the 2.5% was "subject to our fiscal rules".

He refused repeatedly to commit to delivering on the commitment in his first term or offer a timeline for delivery ahead of the strategic defence review, which could take up to a year to conclude.

Sir Keir told Sky News: "We are committed to the 2.5% as I have said before the election and I say again after the election. That is subject to our fiscal rules but the commitment is there.

"The strategic review will take place - that will happen next week and we will set out the details of that. The manifesto commitment was that it would take place within a year.

"I would like it to happen quicker than that if I'm honest and we'll set out details about how we are going to do it."

However, Sir Keir was accused by a former colonel in British military intelligence of "playing with fire" for delaying the decision on defence spending until after the review.

Philip Ingram said "it will take years to fix the army, our ammunition stocks, get the RAF and navy ready".

Lord West of Spithead, a former head of the navy who was a security minister under a previous Labour government, said Labour should outline a timeline during the summit to "set an example to all European countries".

Prime Minister Keir Starmer arrived in the early hours of the morning (UK time), where he will attend his first NATO summit just days after taking over the top job. 

On the flight over, he was asked about a Russian strike on a children's hospital in Ukraine - and what his message is to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Sir Keir said this attack was "appalling", adding that his message is "very, very clear".

"This NATO summit is an opportunity for allies to stand together to strengthen their resolve, particularly in light of that appalling attack against Russian aggression," he added.

When will UK boost defence spending?

Sir Keir was also asked about a comment from General Sir Patrick Sanders, who has warned the world is facing "as dangerous a moment as any time that we've had since 1945".

"I'm committed to that 2.5% within our fiscal rule," he said.

Sir Keir said, for now, it's about "discussing practically how we provide further support for Ukraine and send a very, very clear message to Putin that we will stand against Russian aggression wherever it is in the world".

The chancellor has revealed plans for a new national wealth fund designed to attract billions in private sector investment.

The new Labour government said it has allocated £7.3bn in additional state funding to support the plan.

The proposals include reforms to the state-owned British Business Bank.

Rachel Reeves met with a nine-strong National Wealth Fund Taskforce at Number 11 Downing Street in order to launch the plans.

The taskforce includes former Bank of England governor Mark Carney, Barclays chief executive officer CS Venkatakrishnan and Aviva chief executive Amanda Blanc.

Ms Reeves said the funding will be used to target green and high-growth British industries, stressing there is "no time to waste".

The chancellor added: "We need to go further and faster if we are to fix the foundations of our economy to rebuild Britain and make every part of our country better off."

Examples: If you ask your friend Pradeep, ‘Did you take my book?’, the reply could be ‘Your book is with Jai.’ Now, we can report this statement in two ways:

  • Pradeep told me, ‘Your book is with Jai’.
  • Pradeep told me that my book is with Jai.

Rules For Reported Speech

While changing direct speech into reported speech or vice versa, the following change:

  • the reporting verb
  • the pronouns
  • the situations
  • report using present and future tenses
  • modal verbs
  • word order with who, which, and what

1. Changes in reporting verb

  • Affirmative sentences: said, told (object), asserted, replied, assured, informed, responded, whispered, alleged, believed, assumed, though.
  • Interrogative sentences:  asked, inquired, wanted to know, enquired When we report.
  • Imperative sentences:  ordered, begged, pleaded, implored, advised, demanded.

2. Change of pronouns

  • Direct speech:  Surabhi said, “I am reading.”
  • Indirect speech: Surabhi said that she was reading.
  • A first-person and second-person generally change to a third person (depending upon the object to reporting verb).

4. Change Of Situations Examples:

  • Surabhi said, “I read this book last week.” (direct speech)
  • Surabhi said that she had read that book the previous week, (indirect speech)

  • Surabhi asked, “Have you read this book?” (Direct Speech)
  • Surabhi asked if/whether I had read that book. (Indirect Speech)
  • Surabhi asked, “Where is the book?” (Direct Speech)
  • Surabhi asked where the book was. (Indirect Speech)

(a) yes/no questions – use if/whether (b)  wh-questions – use the wh-word

  • Surabhi asked, “What’s the matter?”
  • Surabhi asked what the matter was. (what + the matter + was)
  • Surabhi asked what was the matter, (what + was + the matter)

Can Be Either

  • who/which/what + complement + be or
  • who/which/what + be + complement

Reported speech using present and future tenses: Examples:

  • Surabhi said, “The sun rises in the east.” (Direct Speech)
  • Surabhi said that the sun rises in the east. (Indirect Speech)
  • Surabhi said, “I will read this book.” (Direct Speech)
  • Surabhi said that she will read that book. (Indirect Speech)

Reported Speech | English Grammar Class 10

  • Surabhi said, “I can solve this sum.” (Direct Speech) 
  • Surabhi said that she could solve that sum. (Indirect Speech)

In our daily lives, we use reported speech in many forms. We use reported speech to report statements, questions, requests, or even commands. There are certain things we need to keep in mind when we report each of them.

  • When we report statements, we have to make sure what changes need to be made in the pronoun, tense or temporal-spatial expression.
  • When we transform questions into reported speech, we have to check whether or not to change the tense, pronoun as well as place and time expression.
  • Upon changing, we have to ensure that the question is an indirect question.
  • We also have to make use of words such as where, when, how, if, whether, etc.
  • In transforming requests and commands into reported speech, tenses are not relevant.
  • We only have to ensure that there are changes in the pronoun and the place and time expression.
