Today's global governance, especially in the areas of human rights, environment, and development, is characterized by a diversity of stakeholders, including international organizations, civil society organizations and corporations, as well as states. They create diverse norms and organizations that sometimes improve the effectiveness of international regimes through coordination and synergy, but at other times conflict with each other and hinder effective problem-solving.How can we reduce conflicts of interest and contestation of ideas and enhance the effectiveness of governance? You are more than welcome to join us in thinking about these issues!

MATSUNAMI Jun

Should the differences between your country’s politics and Japanese politics be explained by institutional designs, by the histories of the two countries or by different political cultures? Perhaps we should instead question the very existence of differences between countries themselves. As a Japanese scholar whose main research field is Japanese politics, GSICS is an intellectual wonderland because there are students who want to study about many different countries and also many international students coming from a variety of countries and backgrounds.

YOKOHAMA Socrates Program

In April 2024, the YOKOHAMA Socrates Program (YNU Program for SOCially Resilient And susTainable EcoSystems) will be starting. The new program will be centered around the issues and methodologies in the humanities and social sciences related to the twin themes of social resilience and social sustainability. It is a bilingual global education program in the YNU College of Urban Sciences enabling students to obtain a bachelor’s degree with English and Japanese as common languages. In the first years after admission, students will take courses in English, in addition to Japanese language courses if their Japanese language proficiency is not native level. After they obtain the required level of Japanese language proficiency, students will later be able to join classes and seminars in Japanese together with students in the College of Urban Sciences. Students will participate in small classes, including seminars conducted through the dialogue-based Socratic method. Graduation theses will be co-supervised by two faculty members who will advise students with the aim of enabling them to utilize appropriate methodology for thinking deeply with their own minds about issues of our times in completing their works.

Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, and Ocean Engineering

Mechanical engineering, material engineering, naval architecture and ocean engineering, and aerospace engineering all seek to build advanced systems and highly functional materials by combining elementary technologies while incorporating basic principles. This department helps students understand these basic principles, develop their scientific intuition in applying those principles, and cultivate the ability to adapt to technical innovation in this globalized world. The learning and research activities in the department seek to build advanced systems and create highly functional materials by bringing together elementary technologies, designing technologies to make the most of elements, and creating production technologies that maintain the balance between our society and the environment. In this manner, our department produces globally-competitive engineers and researchers with practical and sophisticated skills.

Chemistry and Life Science

Today’s material civilization is built upon comprehensive and advanced science technologies for developing and applying functional materials based on unique natural science. The important keys for the sustainable development of civilization include the pursuit of exceptional substances and materials, the construction of good production systems, and the understanding and application of life phenomena. To achieve this, a comprehensive system must be built beyond the conventional academic framework of chemistry to incorporate mathematics and information science. This department focuses on chemistry and life science and produces internationally-minded professionals who can adapt to evolving science technologies with their basic competency and comprehensive skills to address a wide range of issues involving nature research, manufacturing, energy, and life forms by applying principles and their knowledge.

Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

The innovation in information and communication technology that has utterly transformed our society owes its remarkable development to electrical, electronic, communication, and information engineering. Further paradigm shifts and innovation require integrated and interdisciplinary understanding in extensive fields from basic science in mathematics and physics to applied engineering. The master’s program at the Department of Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science produces globally-competitive, practical, and creative engineers and researchers by offering learning and research opportunities in a wide area including mathematical science, physics, applied physics, as well as electrical, electronic, communication, information, and medical information engineering.

International Development Engineering

The Graduate School of Urban Innovation at Yokohama National University offers graduate programs at the Dr. Eng., Ph. D, and Master’s levels in the field of International Development Engineering (civil engineering) taught entirely in English. The program, which originally started in 1989, now provides students with academic knowledge and tools in civil engineering theory and empirics of the highest global standards. We seek motivated students from all over the world, who are eager to work as academic researchers, specialists or professionals in the international arena.

International Infrastructure (IGSI)

By extensively utilizing a studio-teaching format, the IGSI trains students to gain useful knowledge of Civil Engineering, which they put to actual use when they confront various different urban problems in emerging and developing countries. All lectures, studio classes and consultations on master’s thesis will be conducted in English. The course is offered not just to Japanese students but also to foreign students in general. The IGSI thus functions as a foreign-student teaching arm of YNU Graduate School of Urban Innovation.

Infrastructure Management Program (IMP)

This program was established in 1995 with the receipt of a grant from a special scholarship program funded by the Japanese Government for government officers from developing countries of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank). The program examines approaches to infrastructure management at all levels from the planning of infrastructure to its construction and operation while bearing in mind the welfare of the local population and preservation of the environment. A new cohort will begin in October 2016 at the Graduate School of Urban Innovation.

Designed to provide graduates with knowledge of economic theory, empirics, and policy at the highest of global academic standards, in 2013, the Department of Economics in the Graduate School of International Social Sciences established two all-English degree programs to serve a competitive pool of selected international student applicants eager to pursue careers as academic researchers, specialists or business professionals in the international arena. Our program has two distinctive features. First, we offer a North American course-based curriculum with specializations in international economics and labor economics. Second, we also offer a policy-oriented program employing both comparative economic systems and political economy approaches. The Ph.D. Program seeks candidates who have already obtained the skills and knowledge in economics at a Master’s level and who have a strong motivation and the aptitude to continue studying economics at a deeper level both theoretical and empirically. After completion of their doctoral degree, graduates would typically go on (or return) to a career in academics, work at international organizations, or return to a high-level government position in their home country.

Japanese Management

In accordance with the extension of global economy, Japanese firms extend their business areas. As you know, “Japanese management” is known as excellent management system. There are many characteristics of this Japanese management and these suggest meaningful insights through the comparison to other country and area. Our Japanese management program focuses on the student who is interested in Japanese management and wishes to study business management in specific country and area based on Japanese management. Through the study of this course, student can become academic researcher who is familiar with the essence of global business or the advanced business person who has enough academic skills.

Transnational Law and Policy

The Department of International and Business Law at Yokohama National University (YNU) is launching a new doctoral program in Fall 2013 taught entirely in English. The program is designed to provide students with legal knowledge and practical skills needed for work in, inter alia, international organizations and transnational civil society organizations in various areas of global policy making. We seek motivated students from all over the world, who are eager to work in such fields. Graduates of the Doctoral Program in Transnational Law and Policy will be able to conduct leading-edge research and publish their research outcome in international conferences (both academic and policy-oriented). They will also have the opportunity to acquire high-level research skills in various methods of empirical and theoretical analysis so as to enable them to produce policy-oriented papers.

In this department, education will be conducted in mechanical, material, naval architecture and ocean, and aerospace engineering based on analyses of physical phenomena from micro to macro levels. Research conducted in this department addresses: basic science technologies to comprehensively design advanced systems from micromachines to large structures; production and processing methods for the development of functions and structural materials that maintain the balance with the global environment by applying the mechanical properties of solid materials and theories on the origins of various properties; and systems for using marine space through microengineering for marine energy use and for designing mobile objects and structures. In this manner, the department produces globally-competitive, practical, and creative engineers and researchers who can be leaders in their area of research.

Molecules and solid materials as aggregates of atoms, and organic materials as aggregates of molecules, exhibit very different functions depending on their electronic structures, types of atoms and molecules, and their arrangements. Therefore, the clarification of the interrelation between structures and exhibited functions is vital to material chemistry. The most crucial task for producing and using materials efficiently with minimum environmental load is to establish efficient production systems for new materials by effectively harnessing the chemical energy of materials and integrating a wide range of information. In order to tackle global problems related to food, life, medicine, and so forth, it is essential to unravel and apply life phenomena. This department provides opportunities to develop molecules and materials that exhibit new functions, devise new processes for producing and using them, and unravel and apply life phenomena. In this manner, the department cultivates creative professionals who can identify challenges involving materials and life, and effectively address them with due consideration to the global environment.

Similar to the master’s programs, the doctoral programs at the Department of Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science requires broad familiarity and interdisciplinary knowledge in mathematical science, physics, and other basic sciences, as well as their engineering application. By engaging in the world’s leading researches, these doctoral programs deepen the knowledge gained in the master’s programs and help students take initiatives in the creation and development of science and industries in the fields of mathematical science, physics, applied physics, as well as electrical, electronic, communication, information, and medical information engineering. In this manner, the programs produce leading researchers and engineers who can creatively address challenges faced by the knowledge-based and information-driven society that is going through a radical change.

The doctoral program, better known as PhD, is the highest level of education to exist. A PhD is an advanced degree earned in various fields after successfully completing a research thesis. An individual can generally opt to study for a PhD after completion of a Master’s program.

In Japan, PhD is called 博士号 (Hakushigo) . PhD stands for “Doctor of Philosophy”, and graduates are bestowed the title of “Doctor (Dr.)”. In Japan, Doctor (Dr.) is called 博士 (Hakase), though most people go by 先生 (Sensei) .

Program Types, Their Durations, and Admission Requirements

The duration of a PhD program depends on your choice of subject and research thesis. Typically, a PhD program takes around 5 years to complete for those who graduated from a 4 years long undergraduate program. Specialized fields like medical, veterinary, pharmaceutical and dental have 6 years long Bachelor’s degree programs and no Master’s program, and therefore their PhD programs are 4 years long.

In Japan, PhD programs are commonly split into 2 phases. Depending on their highest level of education (Master’s or Bachelor’s), students have an option of starting from the first phase or skipping to the second phase.

english phd programs japan

First Phase is called First Half of a PhD Program (2 Years)

Called 博士前期課程 (Hakushi Zenki Katei) , the first phase’s curriculum includes studies to obtain a Master’s degree , which is a prerequisite requirement for most PhD programs. The first phase is a 2 Years long program.

According to JASSO , one of the following admission requirements must be satisfied to be eligible to join this program:

Most graduate school programs in Japan are taught entirely in Japanese. For international students seeking to join these programs, demonstration of a high level of Japanese proficiency, at least N1, is required. This is to ensure that you are able to understand the curriculum in order to complete the course.

Fortunately, with the increasing number of international students in Japan, many universities have started internationalizing their programs with English-taught courses , including for PhD. There are programs taught mostly in English with supplementary Japanese, as well as programs taught completely in English.

For English-taught PhD programs, students may be asked to demonstrate their English language proficiency with English proficiency certifications like IELTS, TOEFL, or TOEIC. This requirement may be exempt for individuals whose undergraduate or Master’s degree shows high mastery in English.

Different universities offer PhD programs in different fields of study, so you will need to do a thorough search to find one that matches your interest. JASSO’s Search for Schools tool is incredibly helpful for this. You can search for educational institutions that accept international students by degree (undergraduate, Master’s, PhD), school type (public, national, private), school location, field of study, medium of instruction, etc.

To further help you, we have curated a list of 6 PhD programs in Japan which are popular, along with the names of universities offering these programs.

Japanese Language and Literature

This program consists of three fields of study: (1) Japanese Linguistics, (2) Japanese Literature, and (3) Japanese Language Teaching. These subjects are studied not only to deepen the students’ understanding of them, but also to consider the nature of language and literature in general. A wide variety of courses and leading faculty make it possible for students to attain their goals.

The Master of Arts Program in Philosophy is subdivided into three disciplines: Philosophy/ History of Ideas, Christian Studies, and Aesthetics. Top 5 Graduate Schools In Japan With English Programs

Japan houses several globally recognized institutions for their academic excellence or groundbreaking research. If you believe that going to graduate school may improve the understanding of your art(s) and increase future prospects, this might just be the right jumping-off point for you.

Written By: Raihan Abimanyu | Date Published: 26th November 2019

It’s nearing graduation season here in Japan, and one of the biggest dilemmas of graduating students might be, “Should I go find a job, or should I go for a master’s degree?” There are no right-or-wrong answers for this question; both options are equally appropriate, it just depends on what your priorities and situations are. But, if you are leaning more towards leveling-up your degree, Japan may offer some notable options.

According to the 2019 QS World University Ranking , there are 5 Japanese universities among the top 100 in the world, where they have proved to nurture leading academics through a world-class educational environment. However, not all of them have English programs.

No worries, we got you covered there! We will run you through some general guidelines on applying for admission to graduate schools in Japan and also list 5 of the Best Universities in Japan which offer international or English taught masters programs.

Application for Graduate Schools in Japan

The admission flow for Japanese graduate schools generally follows these steps: Application, Documents Screenings, Second Screening (Oral/Essay Exams) and Final Results. To illustrate, here is a sample list of application period deadlines taken from Tokyo University and Waseda University .

english phd programs japan

You will also need to submit several copies of documents by post to the designated addresses or electronically through the web applications. The required documents for application vary for each university and its particular programs. However, these documents are generally mandatory in applying for graduate programs in Japan:

  • Curriculum Vitae/Resume
  • Essays (Statement of Purpose, Research Proposal, Plan after completion, etc.)
  • Academic Transcript(s)
  • Certificate of Graduation
  • A certification from an eligible English Language test (6.0+ IELTS, or 80+ TOEFL IBT are generally the minimum required score)
  • Reference Papers (Conference Papers, Academic Journals, Undergraduate Thesis)
  • Letter of Recommendation from a faculty member (Dean, Faculty Head, Supervisor) or superiors.
  • Last but not least, the application and/or examination fee.

**Certain degrees/programs might require you to submit a GMAT/GRE score.

Make sure to calculate the estimated date of arrivals for your documents as sending them by post may take time, especially if it’s from abroad. Usually, the designated date is informed through the admission guides.

Graduate degrees in Japan typically favors a research focus, so it is also common to find a list of supervisors/professors in the corresponding faculty with their research focus so that you can contact them prior to submitting. This is important as it helps you develop your research plans and ensures a smooth sail ahead towards your graduate’s degree.

Here is a sample that is taken from Keio’s Economic Graduate Program:

Word of Advice for Graduate School applicants in Japan

english phd programs japan

We were able to reach out to Adhika Utama (Dhika), an alumnus from the Graduate School of Energy Science, who is currently working in a renewable energy firm here in Japan about getting into Kyoto University.  "Scouting your preferred field of research interest before even getting yourself admitted is vital as Japanese university tends to heavily focus on research. I made sure I contacted the right professor to gain insights about the laboratories and my own research plan. Fortunately, he was really open and supportive and even assisted me in getting me accepted to the JAICA scholarship."

Dhika highlighted how it is crucial for graduate students to plan out what their goals are in their pursuit of a Master’s degree, even long before they are admitted as a student.

He also mentioned other supporting factors, “I submitted an international level conference paper I did back when I was an undergraduate in the application, I believed it assisted me in getting admitted.”

Another student we reached out to is Kongleaphy Keam (Phy) from Cambodia, currently a 2nd-year graduate student in the MPP/IP program at GrasPP. He shared several insights from his journey when applying to Tokyo University. When asked about his experiences in studying, he stated:

“What I liked the most is at the University of Tokyo, GraSPP in particular, is that all the students are brilliant and high-profile. Besides excellent professors, when you are studying with students with high potentials, you will learn a lot from each other. All the students in my program are diverse in background, and each of them are experts in their fields. So, every time we have an in-class discussion or do group assignments, we always come up with and share a lot of innovative and interesting ideas.”

He then recounted how the application steps were pretty general, from the online applications, documents submissions and interviews. However, he also emphasized several important points in applying as a graduate student to Tokyo University:

“The most important part is your Statement of Purpose. I think most importantly, you need to have a CLEAR goal. What are your plans while studying and after graduation? Make those plans concrete and feasible. Don’t just promise anything if you cannot do them for real. What makes you unique? Why should they choose you instead of others? Here, you have to be genuine. Try to express yourself with concrete examples, not just saying them with any proves.”

In the end, he concluded how formulating out clear and concrete goals are important to not only convince the university in admitting yourself, but will also serve as a guideline and reminders for yourself in achieving it in the future.

Characteristics of Japanese Universities and Junior Colleges

Admission requirements, application materials/entrance examinations, university admissions guide for privately financed international students, what are professional and vocational universities and professional and vocational junior colleges, degree programs in english, university transfer system, find schools.

Undergraduate level university programs and junior colleges constitute the core of higher education institutions and generally take four years to complete (six years for medical, dental, veterinary, and a number of pharmaceutical programs), whereas junior college programs take two or three years to complete.

University graduates are awarded a Bachelor's degree, whereas graduates of junior colleges are awarded an Associate's degree. While many schools admit international students to degree-earning programs, there are also schools that accept short-term students such as auditing students, students taking classes without enrolling in the school or earning course credit, as well as exchange students.

The academic year starts in April, but some universities offer fall admission in September or October.

The different types of universities and junior colleges include national, public, and private.

The number of private institutions is greater, as there are currently 86 national, 101 public, and 620 private undergraduate level universities, and 14 public and 295 private junior colleges.

Including the admission and tuition fees, the total cost of the first year is approximately 820,000 yen for national universities, 930,000 yen for public universities, and 1,100,000 yen for private universities (excluding medical, dental, and pharmaceutical programs).

The tuition for universities in the United States amounts to 3,600,000-4,900,000 yen (using the calculation 1 USD = 130 yen), and British universities charge approximately 1,800,000-3,600,000 yen per academic year (using the calculation 1 GBP = 150 yen), so comparatively speaking, the tuition for Japanese universities is much cheaper .

Classes at Japanese universities and junior colleges are generally held in Japanese , however, in recent years, there has been an increase in the number of university (Bachelor's) degree programs taught entirely in English .

In order to be accepted into a Japanese university or junior college program that is taught in Japanese, individuals must have passed the N1 or N2 JLPT examination in addition to scoring at least 250 points on the Japanese section of the EJU.

*1 University preparatory course : In order to be admitted to a Japanese university, an applicant must have completed at least 12 years of formal education. However, in some countries or regions, education through high school lasts less than 12 years. In this case, students must complete MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology)'s designated "university preparatory course for admission to university" in order to be eligible to apply for Japanese universities.

In many cases, the following application materials are required. The necessary application documents differ by school, so please check the requirements for the schools you plan to apply for. Some schools may also ask for Japanese or English translations.

  • Available at Study in Japan Resource Facilities.

They are universities and junior colleges where students can acquire the knowledge, theory, and practical skills necessary to enter a specific profession. The curriculum ties together academic knowledge from school with actual industries and the regional community, so in addition to attending lectures, these schools offer opportunities for hands-on learning both inside and outside of the classroom.

Graduates are awarded the either a Bachelor's degree (professional) or an Associate's degree (professional).

With the globalization of Japanese universities, universities and graduate schools have created degree programs that allow students to earn degrees solely in English, where Japanese language study is not a barrier. However, no such programs exist at technical colleges and vocational schools.

Even if you enter a course that allows you to obtain a degree only in English, it will be easier to live in Japan and find a job if you study daily Japanese conversation and the written language. Also, some countries require previous Japanese language study to obtain a visa, so check with your school for application documents.

When a junior college graduate, etc. enrolls in a four-year university to complete their bachelor's degree (often as a second or third year student), it is called transferring.

Although many universities accept transfer students, they do not necessarily accept transfer students every year.

Furthermore, graduating from a junior college does not always mean that the credits you took will transfer over to the university.

In order to transfer to a university (bachelor's) program, individuals must satisfy one of the following conditions:

  • Individuals who graduated from a junior college or technical
  • Individuals who completed a specialized program at a vocational school
  • Individuals who completed a program at the Japanese branch of a foreign university that was approved by the Minister of Education
  • Individuals who completed a program at a secondary school approved by the Minister of Education

It is difficult to find information regarding university transfer systems, so please contact your preferred school well in advance.
