Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your batting cage business, including answering calls, scheduling maintenance for the batting cages, collecting payments from customers, etc.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to book your Xth  batting session, or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to expand your batting cage business to a new city.

As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets

Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your batting cage business, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a lender writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement

Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and ensure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.

Fatal batting cage hit leads to lawsuit against Gainesville High staff

The parents of a Gainesville High School senior who died after being hit in the head with a baseball bat during a team practice are suing the school’s leaders and sports staff, alleging negligence.

David and Yasmira Medina want at least $722,208 in damages after the death of their 17-year-old son , Jeremy Medina, who was pronounced brain-dead after the November incident inside a school batting cage . The honors student was a pitcher and catcher on the school’s baseball team.

The Medinas, who filed their lawsuit Tuesday in the Hall County Superior Court, claim that no adults or school employees were supervising the team’s mandatory Nov. 20, 2023 practice when their son was in the school’s batting cage facility with at least nine teammates.

“Tragically, during the practice, one of Jeremy’s teammates swung a bat and hit Jeremy in the head,” the complaint states. “It took over three minutes for any adult to arrive and over seven minutes for CPR to be started.”

No baseball practice was supposed to occur before the official start of the season on Jan. 15, the Medinas said. They said the high school approved the “illegal” November practice, which was scheduled and operated by its baseball coaching staff.

The Gainesville City School System said the passing of Jeremy Medina was a tragic accident and that it does not comment on pending litigation. It said that no employees have been disciplined, suspended or fired in relation to the incident, which was investigated by the Gainesville Police Department.

Chloe Dallaire, the Medinas’ attorney, said the couple tried to settle their case before suing school staff, but the school system did not accept their demand. She said the value of Jeremy Medina’s life coupled with the pain and suffering he endured is worth substantially more than $722,208, which reflects only his medical bills.

“Jeremy’s death was completely preventable,” Dallaire told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “He would still be with us today if the school district’s employees had just followed their own rules. Our goal is not only to bring about justice for Jeremy, but to help prevent this type of tragedy from happening to anyone else’s child.”

In their complaint, the Medinas said an athletic trainer employed by the school performed CPR on their son. They said she was unable to access the school’s automated external defibrillator because she did not have a key for it.

Emergency services were called about seven minutes after Jeremy Medina was struck by the bat, per the lawsuit. He was eventually transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where he was diagnosed with a brain hemorrhage, fractured skull and other head injuries.

Jeremy Medina remained in the hospital until he was pronounced dead on Dec. 11, according to the complaint.

The Medinas said their son had no underlying health issues which contributed to his death. They claim school staff failed to operate athletic activities in accordance with standards imposed by the Georgia High School Association and the Gainesville City School System.

The school’s principal, assistant principal, head baseball coach and director of baseball operations are named as defendants in the case, as are the athletic director, assistant athletic director, two assistant baseball coaches and the athletic trainer who performed CPR on Jeremy Medina.

The high school established a scholarship in Jeremy Medina’s name following his death. It will be awarded each May to a student who embodies his hard work, character, athleticism and academic excellence.

Over in left field, Heliot Ramos had a field-level view of Matos’ lowlight and highlight. Ramos will have plenty of opportunities to graze that patch of outfield grass himself.

With Jung Hoo Lee potentially out for months and Michael Conforto dealing with his own ailment, Matos, 22, and Ramos, 24, will be the team’s starting center and left fielders, respectively. The kids will get their shot.

“He’s a showman,” said Logan Webb of Matos after throwing six shutout innings on Wednesday, thanks partly to Matos’ catch. “That’s what excites people and excites us.”

The Giants have desperately needed that type of excitement, given the number of injured position players.

Lee dislocated his left shoulder after crashing into the center-field wall — nearly the same spot where Matos made his catch — and was scheduled to see Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles for a second opinion . The status of Lee, who has a .262 batting average with two homers and two steals, remains unclear, but he could very well miss the next several months, if not the remainder of the season.

There’s also the matter of Conforto, who was placed on the injured list on Sunday with a right hamstring strain.

Conforto was in the midst of his best season since his days with the Mets, owning a .280 batting average and .821 OPS with seven home runs in 38 games. Designated hitter Jorge Soler even had a scare in the batting cage as he works his way back from a shoulder injury: He hit a ball that ricocheted off the cage and struck him in the head, though he continued onto a rehab assignment Wednesday.

“There’s always injuries that happen,” Webb said after Wednesday’s win. “Unfortunately, it’s been crazy the last week or so. You guys all saw the video of Soler yesterday; you don’t see that very often.

“It’s just kind of how it’s been going right now for us. We can’t sit back and feel bad for yourself. You just have to go out there and play and hope for the best.”

Matos and Ramos, once top prospects in the Giants’ system, are still seeking consistent success at the major league level.

Matos, who homered off Yoshinobu Yamamoto on Monday, has been a below-average hitter during his brief major league career, owning a .250 batting average and .663 OPS, but excels in two departments: avoiding strikeouts and making contact.

Over 81 career games, Matos has a strikeout rate of 12.3%; for context, entering Thursday, only eight players have a lower strikeout rate in 2024. In 16 plate appearances this season, Matos has yet to strike out (or walk). Additionally, Matos’ career contact rate of 85.0% would rank in the top-25 this season if he qualified.

The main concern with Matos, though, is the defense.

In 60 career games in center field, Matos has been worth minus-6 outs above average and minus-8 fielding run value , both of which are the worst marks among all center fielders since the beginning of last season. Additionally, Matos has also been worth minus-10 defensive runs saved . Matos noted on Wednesday that he and the coaching staff have discussed positioning him deeper in the outfield.

While Ramos has graded out OK defensively in a very limited sample, worth two defensive runs saved across 253 career outfield innings, he has struggled mightily with the bat.

Since debuting in 2022, Ramos has a career .200 batting average and .536 OPS over 42 games. Ramos is 9-for-29 (.310 batting average) this season, but only two of those hits — a pair of doubles — have gone for extra bases.

Ramos’ struggles are partially rooted in his bat-to-ball skills. In 112 career plate appearances, Ramos has a contact rate of 68.6%. Entering Thursday, Nick Castellanos had the same contact rate this season, ranking 10th-worst in baseball. While Ramos can hit the ball hard, owning a career average exit velocity of 90.7 mph, he has struck out in about a third of his career plate appearances.

The circumstances are far from ideal, but Matos and Ramos will receive runway to prove themselves at the major league level. Time will tell how they make use of it.

COOLEST BASEBALL FACILITY IN TOWN! This baseball facility is truly welcoming, not only for a whole team, but the whole fam! The family owners and warm staff create such an inviting environment for all. Practice for the team is always quality BP offering a range of cage services from machine pitching, to live pitches, to Hittrax. Many times dad and friends tag along with our youth baseball player and enjoy an hour or two of BP together. During school breaks this is definitely a hot hangout spot for baseball players to gather. Or, if you're a remote worker like me, they offer free wifi to be able to work from BP . They've also hosted our baseball player's birthday party, which was so much fun! And the best part is... it is sibling approved! The wide array of facility fun keeps our baseball sibling entertained during BP, from the arcade games, to video games, and even basketball! Not to mention the snack offerings is top tier! So glad we have this facility, especially in South Bay!

Just checked this place out for the first time and it was great! We really needed some batting cages in the South Bay. There are video games, snacks, and a small basketball hoop as well. The lady working there was super nice too. Will definitely be coming back!

Best cages in the west! It's a family affair. Both my son and daughter love to maximize their monthly membership. My daughter hits softballs while my sons gets his reps in. They love going to Winn Cages. Now, I'm not sure if it's the hitting, basketball hoop or PS5's that they enjoy most. Not to mention snack bar is on point! Facility is clean with ample of seating.

But his game had a notable flaw, which was preventing him from realizing his full potential and last year caused his progress to stall.

He couldn’t stop striking out.

After recording an eye-watering 172 strikeouts in 117 games between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester last season, Kavadas went into the winter determined to start making better contact. The 25-year-old has always boasted excellent plate discipline — he’s averaged 100 walks per season the last two years — but he had holes in his swing that opposing pitchers were learning to exploit.

Now Kavadas appears to have closed those gaps, and the results have been dramatic.

This season, the WooSox first baseman has ranked among the most productive players in the Red Sox system, entering Thursday with a .310 batting average, .454 on-base percentage and a 1.124 OPS to go along with nine home runs and 25 RBI through his first 34 games. More importantly, he’s struck out 37 times while drawing 23 walks, cutting his strikeout rate from 35.8% last year to 28.4% this year.

So, what’s his secret?

“As counterintuitive as it may be, just trying to do less has allowed me to do more,” Kavadas said. “Not trying to hit a 500-footer on every swing has given me some adjustability and because of that I’m able to read the ball a little longer, I’m able to start on a dime, I don’t have to gear up to start and I think because of that I’m making a lot more contact in and out of the zone.”

Beyond a change in mindset, Worcester Red Sox manager Chad Tracy said Kavadas has spent a lot of time working on his bat-to-ball skills in the batting cage and with the Trajekt machine, a device that can simulate live pitching. Kavadas is now better able to cover the top of the zone, and given his advanced batting eye and prodigious power, Kavadas is capable of doing damage whenever he gets the barrel on the ball.

“He’s a very powerful guy,” Tracy said. “He’s putting the ball in play more and for Niko, when the ball goes in play it has a chance to go into a gap or over the fence. It’s notably different.”

While it’s only been a little over a month, Kavadas looks much more like the guy who batted .280 with a .990 OPS in 2022 than the guy who batted .206 with an .805 OPS last year. His re-emergence has been especially encouraging given the way the Red Sox have struggled offensively at the big league level. With first baseman Triston Casas and designated hitter Masataka Yoshida both sidelined due to injury, it’s not crazy to imagine Kavadas getting a look if he keeps hitting at his current pace.

Yet while reaching the big leagues is Kavadas’ ultimate goal, the former 11th-round pick out of Notre Dame believes he still has more to prove.

“From the time I was 5 years old I wanted to be a big league baseball player, so being this close is exciting, but the job’s not finished,” Kavadas said. “The goal is to keep it up and hope that I get the chance someday.”

Bitter pill for Winckowski

Josh Winckowski has enjoyed success at the big league level. Last year he was among Boston’s top relievers, posting a 2.88 ERA over 84.1 innings, and this year he was getting results again, posting a 3.33 ERA through 24.1 innings over his first 12 outings, including three starts.

Despite that, when Brayan Bello was activated from the injured list over the weekend, Winckowski was the odd man out.

“It was a short (conversation),” Winckowski said. “I was told we’re optioning you and you’re going to start down there, and that was all that I heard.”

Winckowski being demoted to Triple-A despite solid traditional numbers is a stark example of how the game has evolved. Pitchers are judged less by their on-field results and more by advanced metrics that focus on factors fully within their control, like their ability to strike batters out and avoid hard contact.

“Honestly I think my ERA speaks for itself but that’s not really what guys are getting graded on anymore,” Winckowski said. “I don’t think I grade out very well in those at all and I think that’s reflected in the decision that was made.”

A look at Winckowski’s Statcast page tells the story much better than the back of his baseball card. The 25-year-old ranks 11th percentile among MLB pitchers in hard-hit percentage (46.9%), 13th percentile in expected batting average (.288) and 14th percentile in expected ERA (5.42). His fastball and off speed pitches grade out similarly, and his Fielding Independent Pitching mark, which measures a pitcher’s ability to get strikeouts and avoid home runs, walks and hit by pitches, has been nearly a full run higher than his ERA each of the past two seasons.

Given the Red Sox shift in philosophy towards trying to fill up the strike zone with nasty stuff, a pitcher like Winckowski who lives and dies by the ground ball isn’t necessarily going to be valued as much as guys like Greg Weissert, Zack Kelly and Justin Slaten, who miss bats and produce much more attractive metrics.

Winckowski knows this, of course, and though he wasn’t told to do so explicitly, he plans to make some adjustments he hopes will lead to more swing-and-miss in his game.

“Even as a pitcher without being told you want to punch more guys out,” Winckowski said. “It makes the game easier, sometimes relying on your defense or the ball going to someone three or four times an inning can be tough, so even without being told I want to get more strikeouts.”

Difficult as this setback may be, Winckowski doesn’t need to look far for examples of guys who have been sent to Triple-A only to come back and enjoy renewed success at the big league level. Brennan Bernardino, Cooper Criswell and Kelly have all thrived after enduring similar disappointments, so don’t be surprised if Winckowski brings a different look when his number is eventually called again.

Romero’s loud debut

Mikey Romero, Boston’s first-round pick in 2022, made quite an impression in his season debut at High-A Greenville on Wednesday, going 1 for 4 with a triple and a run scored. The 20-year-old shortstop missed nearly all of last season with a back injury and was brought along slowly this spring as he completed his recovery, but now Romero should finally get a chance to prove himself after a rocky start to his professional career.

South Africa urges UN's top court to order cease-fire in Gaza to shield citizens in Rafah

THE HAGUE, Netherlands — (AP) — South Africa urged the United Nations’ top court on Thursday to order a cease-fire in Gaza during hearings over emergency measures to halt Israel’s military operation in the enclave’s southern city of Rafah.

It was the third time the International Court of Justice held hearings on the conflict in Gaza since South Africa filed proceedings in December at the court, based in The Hague in the Netherlands, accusing Israel of genocide.

The country’s ambassador to the Netherlands, Vusimuzi Madonsela, urged the panel of 15 international judges to order Israel to “totally and unconditionally withdraw” from the Gaza Strip.

The court has already found that there is a "real and imminent risk" to the Palestinian people in Gaza by Israel's military operations. "This may well be the last chance for the court to act," said Irish lawyer Blinne Ní Ghrálaigh, who is part of South Africa's legal team.

Judges at the court have broad powers to order a cease-fire and other measures, although the court does not have its own enforcement apparatus. A 2022 order by the court demanding that Russia halt its full-scale invasion of Ukraine has so far gone unheeded.

During hearings earlier this year, Israel strongly denied committing genocide in Gaza, saying it does all it can to spare civilians and is only targeting Hamas militants. The country says Rafah is the last stronghold of the militant group.

The latest request focuses on the incursion into Rafah.

South Africa argues that the military operation has far surpassed justified self-defense. “Israel’s actions in Rafah are part of the end game. This is the last step in the destruction of Gaza,” lawyer Vaughan Lowe said.

According to the latest request , the previous preliminary orders by The Hague-based court were not sufficient to address "a brutal military attack on the sole remaining refuge for the people of Gaza." Israel will be allowed to answer the accusations on Friday.

In January, judges ordered Israel to do all it can to prevent death, destruction and any acts of genocide in Gaza, but the panel stopped short of ordering an end to the military offensive that has laid waste to the Palestinian enclave. In a second order in March, the court said Israel must take measures to improve the humanitarian situation.

South Africa has to date submitted four requests for the international court to investigate Israel. It was granted a hearing three times.

Most of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million people have been displaced since fighting began.

The war began with a Hamas attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7 in which Palestinian militants killed around 1,200 people and took about 250 hostages. Gaza’s Health Ministry says over 35,000 Palestinians have been killed in the war, without distinguishing between civilians and combatants in its count.

South Africa initiated proceedings in December 2023 and sees the legal campaign as rooted in issues central to its identity . Its governing party, the African National Congress, has long compared Israel's policies in Gaza and the occupied West Bank to its own history under the apartheid regime of white minority rule, which restricted most Blacks to "homelands." Apartheid ended in 1994.

On Sunday, Egypt announced it plans to join the case. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Israeli military actions “constitute a flagrant violation of international law, humanitarian law, and the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 regarding the protection of civilians during wartime.”

Several countries have also indicated they plan to intervene, but so far only Libya, Nicaragua and Colombia have filed formal requests to do so.
