A native of India, Soumik Purkayastha, MS ’21, PhD ’24, first made a connection with the University of Michigan School of Public Health in 2005.

Purkayastha was born in Chandannagar, a town about the same size and population as Ann Arbor, in the state of West Bengal. He spent most of his childhood with his parents in Kolkata or with his grandparents in Chandannagar. 

A visit to Ann Arbor when he was in fourth grade would leave an indelible impression on Purkayastha and set him on a path toward a career in public health.

“My father visited the Department of Biostatistics during his sabbatical year,” he said. “My mother and I were able to join him for a few months here in Ann Arbor. Later, when I was applying to graduate programs in the United States, the program here was very attractive because not only was it a great program, but I felt a personal connection to the school and the town at large.

It’s encouraging to see how the integration of data science in public health contributes to improved health outcomes. In many ways, I feel our work is meaningful and well-received not just in clinical circles but also by policymakers and the media.”

“Back in 2005, I had no way of knowing I’d be spending a good chunk of my 20s in Ann Arbor, but now I can look back and connect some dots.”

For Purkayastha, one of the most interesting things about public health is how he keeps learning about exciting ways in which public health and data science intersect.

“It’s encouraging to see how the integration of data science in public health contributes to improved health outcomes,” he said. “In many ways, I feel our work is meaningful and well-received not just in clinical circles but also by policymakers and the media.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Purkayastha had an opportunity to work on spatio-temporal forecasting of infectious diseases. His areas of focus included infection rates in India, comparing and understanding how different transmission models work, as well as developing a transmission data-driven framework to help inform public health policy.

“What I enjoyed the most was getting to learn from epidemiologists, biostatistics, economists and policy experts at a time when we were all confined to our apartments,” Purkayastha said. “It was a time when all of us struggled, yet our collective efforts at understanding what was going on in the world around us gave me a sense of purpose—and I cherish that.

“I think working in public health gives me a sense of direction on what to do with my skill set while also finding meaning in the work I do.”

Purkayastha will graduate in May with a PhD in Biostatistics from the Department of Biostatistics at Michigan Public Health. He earned a Master of Science in Biostatistics from Michigan Public Health after receiving bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Statistics from St. Xavier’s College and the Indian Statistical Institute respectively, both of Kolkata, India.

Driving change with biostatistics

He found meaning in working with the student organization STATCOM: Statistics in the Community .

“I’m proud to say that my department is home to STATCOM, a community outreach program provided by graduate students at the University of Michigan,” Purkayastha said.

The program offers the expertise of graduate students—free of charge—to nonprofit governmental and community organizations in the areas of data organization, analysis, and interpretation.

“I have been very fortunate to find meaningful consulting work with a host of community partners,” he said. “From 2022-23, I had the honor of serving as co-president of STATCOM. It has been both challenging as well as rewarding. I expect to continue with STATCOM until I graduate.”

A few of STATCOM’s recent projects include partnerships with:

  • The Michigan Center for Youth Justice (MCYJ): STATCOM’s partnership with the MCYJ revolves around understanding the patterns of special investigations and violations occurring in juvenile justice facilities throughout the state.
  • The Detroit Housing Commission (DHC) and Poverty Solutions (PS): STATCOM has been working with the DHC and PS to investigate evictions among families with children in Detroit to reduce accompanied and unaccompanied youth homelessness rates.
  • Stand with Trans (SWT): STATCOM is collaborating with SWT to identify gaps in—and further improve—online resources that are designed to empower and support transgender youth.

Purkayastha also worked as a research assistant at the University of Michigan, studying diabetes.

“I worked with doctors and clinical experts to study diabetic foot ulcers,” he said. “They’re a major cause of amputation in US adults. With diabetes prevalence rising, understanding how these ulcers behave is crucial not only from a surgical perspective but also from a preventive viewpoint. It was a wonderful experience getting to apply my technical skills to real diabetes data to derive insights through statistics and visualization tools. I learned a lot about the disease from medical professionals as well.

“I think the work biostatisticians do is helpful for practitioners and policymakers as we learn more about disease prediction and prevention. Most importantly, the work we do in public health must be accessible and informative to the public. I think it’s incredibly important that we use all our skills to advocate for public health initiatives, policies and practices.”

In addition, Purkayastha had an internship with Apple in California, where he learned about language models.

“The future of language models in medicine, and public health is incredibly exciting,” he said. “I was also fortunate to receive the Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship for my final dissertation year. It allowed me to focus on developing new research projects and spend a lot of time thinking about cool, new ideas.”

Working in public health is ‘incredibly rewarding’

After graduation, Purkayastha will join the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Pittsburgh as an assistant professor in the fall. He will be engaged in methodological and applied public health research in addition to teaching and mentoring younger students in public health education and research.

“Soumik is a terrific example of the best of Michigan graduates; His dedication to translational biostatistics is inspiring,” said Bhramar Mukherjee , the John D. Kalbfleisch Distinguished University Professor of Biostatistics and Siobán D. Harlow Collegiate Professor of Public Health. “His work is grounded in solid theory and computation but has profound public health impact. He has been an amazing student leader through his work in departmental committees and through our flagship student organization STATCOM. I look forward to his scholarly career after graduation. I know he will make a difference.”

Purkayastha said he thrives on the satisfaction of knowing that his efforts in public health are making a positive impact on the health and well-being of individuals and communities.

“I feel it can be incredibly rewarding on a personal level for many others as well,” he said. “I have seen firsthand how the work we do translates to changes in governance and policy making. Further, there is an increasing need for health data scientists, who use their data skills for the public good. And it’s not just biostatistics, public health offers a wide range of career paths and specialties, including epidemiology, health education, policy development, environmental health and global health. This diversity allows individuals to find roles that align with someone’s interests, skills and passions, creating opportunities for personal and professional growth.

“I’m satisfied with my career choices so far. Working in public health allows me to focus on a lot of things I’m interested in while building something useful for communities at large. It’s a good feeling, and I wish that for everyone.”

BU RAs Authorize Four-Day Strike over Contract Negotiations

Reslife offices will remain open during regular business hours, and its professional staff will respond to calls for assistance during the evening, weekend, and overnight hours.

Members of Boston University’s Residence Life Union, a collection of nearly 300 resident assistants (RAs), graduate resident assistants (GRAs), and graduate hall assistants (GHAs), authorized a strike on Thursday after negotiations with BU officials failed to result in a new contract.

Union members, who are part of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) 509, plan to walk off the job on Friday, April 12, for a four-day strike that will kick off with a rally at noon on Marsh Plaza. A series of actions, including pickets during campus information sessions and tours, are scheduled through the holiday weekend.

Responding to word of the strike, the University says it has in place a set of contingency plans to ensure the safety and support of all students in residence halls during the strike.

In a message sent on Thursday to all RAs, GRAs, and GHAs, BU Dean of Students Jason Campbell-Foster wrote, “Voting to strike, while a serious decision at any point during contract negotiations, is a fundamental right afforded to you. I am certain that you did not come to this conclusion without deep consideration for the impact it will have on the experiences of the residents you have been caring for. There is more work to be done at the bargaining table, and while I believe declaring a strike is unnecessary, given our progress on key issues, we respect your right to do so.”

In a separate message to all students living in BU residences, Campbell-Foster reiterated that striking is “a fundamental right afforded to all employees,” adding, “We respect their choice to cease duties as we negotiate their first labor contract since unionizing in 2023. Equally as important as respecting their right to strike is our commitment to ensuring that you continue to have access to support and services in a safe environment.”

The ResLife strike comes at the same time as another strike unfolding on BU’s campus. Members of the Graduate Workers Union (BUGWU), also part of SEIU 509, have been on strike since March 25 . They’re also pressing for a new contract, with increased stipends and better benefits, among other issues.

According to a publicly available bargaining tracker organized by the ResLife union, the two sides have yet to reach an agreement on issues that include public health accommodations, additional mental health and addiction training, workload, compensation, and benefits.

A new Frequently Asked Questions page has been added to the BU ResLife website, with information about the contract negotiations, the strike, and the ResLife union more broadly. According to that site, union representatives have met with BU’s bargaining unit seven times to negotiate (most recently on Thursday, April 11) since the union put forth new contract language in December.

ResLife student workers who choose to forgo work during the strike will have to turn in office keys and master keys to the professional staff responsible for their building or neighborhood. However, the University says it will not restrict the workers from accessing their rooms or dining plans, nor will officials charge a daily rate for room and board during the strike. 

The RAs, GRAs, and GHAs at BU are sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students chosen for their leadership and community-building abilities. They are responsible for addressing residence hall rules and building community among students in the dorms. They’re often the first University workers to deal with student conflicts, roommate issues, and crises that surface in BU housing. In return, they receive free housing (worth approximately $11,000 to $20,000), and some also receive free or discounted meal plans, an additional value of several thousand dollars.

Among other stipulations, ResLife union members are seeking additional financial compensation, a key sticking point in the negotiations.

“Housing as compensation does not acknowledge the critical role we fulfill around the clock at the university,” said second-year RA Jasmine A. Richardson (CGS’23, Pardee’25) in a press release provided by the union. “Between unpaid training time and managing the high RA-to-student ratios, many of us are struggling to find financial and academic stability. BU has the resources to invest in us as workers, and settling a fair contract would bring us closer to a more equitable campus for all.”

According to BU’s FAQ page, the University has responded with offers that include (but aren’t limited to):

  • Free housing during the period of employment
  • Meal plans for all RAs (currently meals are only provided to RAs in dormitory-style accommodations)
  • A $1,000 stipend per semester for all RAs, with an additional $500 per semester for GRAs with supervisory responsibilities
  • Air conditioning units installed in certain RA rooms during the summer months
  • A new grievance and third-party arbitration provision to provide a formal process for employees to resolve workplace issues
  • Access to optional training for NARCAN and CPR administration, free of charge to all members of the bargaining unit
  • Availability of KN95 masks in Residence Life offices for student workers

Collectively, Residence Life workers oversee 11,000 students living in 150 residences and are one of the few departments at the University with an on-call system that allows staff to be available to assist students, parents, and members of the University community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year.

“Our work involves supporting students through navigating difficult situations, which can range from conflict mediation to crisis intervention,” said GRA Kira Levenson (SPH’24) in the union’s press release. “We need training that more accurately reflects our duties so that we can foster a safer environment on campus for everyone.”

About 75 percent of undergraduate students live on campus during all four years of their college career, according to BU Admissions figures. The University operates on-campus residences for both undergraduate and graduate students that span from large traditional dormitories such as Warren Towers to smaller apartment-style brownstones.

During the strike, professional Residence Life staff will field calls during the evening, weekend, and overnight hours. The strike does not affect services offered by the security assistants or the Boston University Police Department. All emergencies should continue to be directed to 617-353-2121. As a supporter of the ResLife union strike at Boston University, it’s crucial to highlight the significance of invisible labor and the labor theory of value in this context. The strike initiated by nearly 300 resident assistants (RAs), graduate resident assistants (GRAs), and graduate hall assistants (GHAs) is a testament to the vital but often undervalued work performed by these student workers.

Firstly, it’s essential to recognize that the labor of these ResLife workers goes beyond mere housing compensation. Their responsibilities entail addressing residence hall rules, building community among students, and dealing with a myriad of student conflicts and crises. This round-the-clock labor, often unseen and unacknowledged, contributes significantly to the smooth functioning of BU’s residential life.

From a Marxist perspective, the labor theory of value posits that the value of a commodity is determined by the amount of socially necessary labor time required for its production. In the case of ResLife workers, their labor is not adequately compensated by free housing and meal plans alone. The additional financial compensation they are seeking is a rightful demand considering the labor-intensive nature of their roles and the value they bring to BU’s campus community.

Moreover, the strike highlights broader issues of exploitation and inequality within capitalist structures. The fact that these student workers are struggling to find financial and academic stability despite their critical contributions speaks volumes about the disparities inherent in the system. BU, as an institution with significant resources, has the capacity and responsibility to invest in its workers and ensure fair compensation for their labor.

The offers presented by the University, while addressing some concerns, still fall short of recognizing the full value of the labor performed by ResLife workers. Free housing and meal plans are essential but do not adequately compensate for the extensive responsibilities and challenges faced by these student workers.

In short, supporting the ResLife union strike is not just about addressing immediate grievances but also about advocating for fair compensation, recognition of invisible labor, and a more equitable campus environment for all.

Interesting to note that one of the demands to avert the strike (according to the reslife union instagram page) was medical leave, and one of the things left off of the BU FAQ is medical leave.

If an RA is hospitalized, or otherwise sick, are they supposed to still work? It is crazy to me that there are any jobs you can get where sick days are not a thing, let alone a job that is actively fighting to prevent giving RAs sick days.

I looked through BU’s FAQ. The fact that it took this much to get the university to offer RAs rooms with air conditioning during the summer is insane. The RAs have also had to beg for CPR and Narcan training, which seem like bare minimum expectations for someone who may be a first responder to an emergency or crisis. Have RAs been responding to medical emergencies and mental crises without basic first-aid knowledge?

I hope this opens people’s eyes to how much we demand out of these student workers and how little they legitimately get in return. The university makes free housing seem like generosity, but these students are expected to be available and prepared to respond 24/7/365, all while completing coursework and planning events for the university. I wish the union the best with their demands. We see the work you do and are so grateful! :)

I could not agree more with the graduate students observation. One macro issue is that BU leaders need to focus more on the student experience and less on the bloated staffing of the inner offices. With hundreds of VPs across the campus earning high wages. It highlights the already bloated staff in Office of the President and Provost. And what on earth does the VP for “auxiliary Services” contribute to the campus. They have another layer and layer of management. And can’t figure out how to provide air conditioning during the summer season.

The executives in charge of the RA programs clearly are weak leaders.
