Tip #1- Choosing the right paper:  Most printing services use 80 g/m² paper by default. However, 80 g/m² paper is relatively thin and as a result, the print on the reverse side will shine through if you are printing double-sided.

Dissertation Binding and Printing Options | Comparison and Tips

Your dissertation is finally finished, you got it proofread and checked for plagiarism . The final step is printing your dissertation, which means choosing between:

• Types of binding
• Colour vs. black & white

Single vs. double sided

• Paper type and thickness

You also need to decide which printing and binding service to use. This independent article explains all options and helps you make the right decisions.

Aside from keeping the pages of your dissertation together, the binding is also responsible for your supervisor’s first impression of your dissertation. There are various types of binding, ranging from the cheaper spiral binding to the more expensive hardcover book binding .

The type of binding should depend on:

• Guidelines from your university or professor
• Your dissertation’s version (draft vs. final)
• Type of dissertation (PhD vs. undergraduate dissertation)

Spiral binding (± £7)

• Professional appearance
• Browsing through the pages is easy (can be opened flat)
• Fairly cheap

Comb binding (± £5)

• Enables easy browsing of the pages
• Binding can be opened and closed (not easily)
• Has a cheap appearance

Fastback binding (± £8)

• Professional book-like appearance
• Available in different colours
• Risk of pages falling out after a while

Paperback binding (£10-20)

• Durable and professional
• Book-like appearance
• Opening and browsing is less smooth than with spiral or comb binding

Hardback binding (£20-40)

• Customizable cover
• Quality comes at a price

Colour vs. Black & White

Unless specifically stated in your university guidelines, it is up to you to decide whether to print your dissertation in colour or black & white. Printing in colour is on average two to four times more expensive.

In general, a colour-printed dissertation looks more professional, but it is not required. Does your dissertation contain graphs or figures that rely on colour? Be sure to print at least these pages in colour.

Printing double sided is often cheaper than printing single sided due to the paper savings – it makes your dissertation half as thick. However, some universities require you to print your dissertation single sided. Be sure to check the guidelines.

When printing your dissertation double sided, pay attention to the following points:

• New chapters should start on the right side. You will need to take this into account and insert “blank pages” when preparing your dissertation.
• Add a blank page after the title page so that the acknowledgements or abstract are not printed on the back of your title page.
• The page numbering is often placed bottom right on the right side of the page and bottom left on the left side. You can easily set this in Word by choosing “outside alignment”.

Paper weight

The thickness of the paper (measured in gsm or grams) is something most students don’t think about, but it does have a significant impact on the look and feel of your dissertation.

Standard printing paper has a weight of 75-90 gsm. For a bachelor’s or master’s dissertation this is fine. If you want the paper to look and feel more professional and durable, a paper weight of 100-130 gsm is better. This is often used for PhD dissertations.

Number of copies

It is common to print three to five copies of your dissertation. Depending on your university’s guidelines you might need to submit one to three copies to your supervisor. In addition, you might want to have a copy for yourself or your family.

The production (printing and binding) takes on average two days, and delivery takes another day. For an additional charge (ranging from +20 to +80%), the production and delivery time can be shortened.

Have a looming deadline? Your local printing shop is probably able to print and bind your dissertation faster, and it eliminates delivery time. However, keep in mind that this is often a little more expensive.

Before sending your dissertation to a printing shop, there are three things you should do:

1. Save your dissertation as a PDF By saving your file as a PDF, the formatting will be consistent on every computer. This way you prevent any unpleasant surprises such as offsets when receiving your printed dissertation.

2. Check for language mistakes There’s nothing worse than finding a language mistake in your printed version. Make sure to proofread your dissertation or make use of a professional dissertation proofreading service .

3. Update the contents page Before saving your dissertation as a PDF, update the (automatic) table of contents. Don’t forget to cross-check the page numbers listed in the table of contents with the actual page number.

Is it possible to bind two or more PDFs in one book?

Yes! However, the PDFs have to be combined prior to the binding process. You can find a program for this in our Download templates .

Is it possible to bind more than 400 pages?

If a paper exceeds 400 pages, you have to select “Double-sided” printing under “Paper and Printing” when you configure your order. This way, we can print up to 800 pages for you.

Which printers are used and does this affect the printing?

BachelorPrint uses digital printing machines to significantly speed up the production time compared to offset printers.

Occasionally, the printed paper may turn out slightly waved. These waves are completely normal after printing, due to the moisture content in the paper. The moisture is an essential quality for printing paper, as otherwise the paper would be too porous and the print quality would suffer considerably!

The slight waves occur during the hot printing process of the digital printing machines, as some of the moisture escapes in a flash. The weather and humidity can also influence this process. However, the waves only occur for a short time after printing and may disappear again in the following days due to their own weight in the horizontal tray.

Is it possible to combine single-sided and double-sided printing in my order?

Yes, of course! For this, you should write an email to [email protected] before you place your order.

How should I format the margins for my PDF document?

We strongly recommend margins of 2cm (0,78 inches) to get the best possible outcome for your print.

Where can I select the pages that should be printed in color?

At BachelorPrint, we don’t differentiate between color and black-and-white printing. Your paper will be printed exactly as it is formatted in your PDF. I. e. Elements in color will automatically be printed in color – with no surcharge!

Can you edit my PDF in case I have not formatted it correctly?

As we strive to offer the highest level of quality, we don’t re-edit any printing files. Therefore, we are not able to correct your PDF.

Does the Data Check review the format of my file?

No, the Data Check merely inspects the printability of your file. It does not screen any content (e. g. grammar, spelling or correct page numbers, etc.)

Is it possible to order just a printout without binding?

Yes, that is no problem at all! For this, you should write an email to [email protected] before you place your order.

Is it possible to print on the spine of a thermal binding?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to print on the spine of thermal bindings.

Do you bind already printed pages?

To guarantee our usual high quality and durability, we do not bind already printed pages.

How many large format/fold-out pages can be integrated into one binding?

If you select the DIN format for your binding, up to 10 x DIN A3 fold-out pages (depending on the binding up to 15 possible), 5 x DIN A2, and 3 x DIN A1 can be integrated – If you want to combine several formats in one binding, contact us via email: [email protected]

Our University requires an “adhesive binding” from us. Which one is it?

Our thermal bindings as well as our leather bindings are types of adhesive bindings. This means you can choose whether you want a high-quality leather binding or an inexpensive thermal binding.

Is a two-line embossing on the spine of the book possible?

Unfortunately, it is not possible.

Is it possible to emboss a logo on the spine of the book?

Which embossing process is used.

BachelorPrint uses the modern hot foil stamping process . In this process, an embossing foil is fused with the binding surface by applying heat without creating a deep embossing. This embossing technique allows fine lines and edges, which are particularly relevant for university logos, to be reproduced. From time to time, the edges of the embossed letters or logos may not be completely smooth, but have slight fraying/distortions. This contributes to a nostalgic embossed look.

Is it possible to emboss several logos on my leather binding?

Of course, it is! Simply, select the “Customized embossing” function and upload your individualized front cover in PDF format. You can find a template on our Download Center .

Is it possible to choose another font or format for the Standard embossing?

To guarantee high-quality embossing at all times, we generally only use the sans serif font “Arial.” Therefore, it is not possible to change the font and format.

Is it possible to send in a logo after placing an order if the logo is currently not available in the shop?

Unfortunately, this is not possible, as we aim to meet the delivery date to 100%. Please send us the logo in high resolution to [email protected] before placing your order. We will integrate the logo in our Online-Shop within 2 business days, so you can choose it for your order.

Where can I find the 3D Live Preview?

After you have uploaded the PDF file that needs to be printed, the button “3D Look Inside” will appear below the preview of your binding on the right. This will take you to the Live Preview.

If you are unable to open the 3D Live Preview, your browser may block the Live Preview as a pop-up. In this case, we recommend using the Chrome or Firefox browser but make sure that the settings allow pop-ups.

Does the printed copy correspond with the 3D Live Preview?

In rare cases, the text or lines may be shown too thin or blurred in the Live Preview. Usually, this may happen because of your screen resolution or browser settings. However, your document will turn out perfectly and in high resolution!

Thus, for the best possible illustration, we recommend the full-screen mode when using the Live Preview!
