Thirteen-year-old Jesse is a typical teenager who hates his teacher, Mrs. Fink. While visiting a vintage clothing shop, Jesse sees a doll that looks exactly like his dreaded teacher, and he convinces the shopkeeper to sell it to him. When Jesse accidentally pierces the doll's arm with a sewing needle, he is shocked to find Mrs. Fink with her arm in a sling the next day and gets spooked when a spot on the doll's face appears, exactly where Mrs. Fink has a mole. Jesse's worst fears are confirmed when the doll crawls out of his backpack and speaks to him. He throws the doll away, but it turns up in his room again. Jesse is desperate for help. Geneva's friend Sol who is knowledgeable about voodoo, determines that the doll is using Mrs. Fink's vitality to keep itself alive. Geneva and the boys plan to cast a spell to send the doll back to where it came from. Geneva warns Jesse that he must have pure intent for the spell to work, since the doll is nourished by negative energy. As a result, Jesse becomes more organized, more focused in school and more responsible around the house. As the full moon rises, Jesse performs the ceremony to restore Mrs. Fink to her rightful place and banish the doll to Shadow Zone.

Shadow Zone: My Teacher Ate My Homework is a 1997 fantasy movie that tells the story of a young boy named Jesse Hackett, played by Gregory Smith, who is forced to face his biggest fear yet - his teacher accidentally eating his homework. However, things take a bizarre turn when he discovers that his teacher, Ms. Fink, played by Shelley Duvall, is actually an alien from another dimension who has the ability to manipulate time and space.

The movie begins with Jesse starting a new school year, hoping to make a good impression on his new teacher. However, his plans are ruined when his dog eats his homework on the first day of school. In a desperate attempt to avoid punishment, Jesse lies and tells Ms. Fink that his homework was accidentally destroyed. But Ms. Fink doesn't believe him and begins to go through his notebooks, only to accidentally ingest a strange piece of paper that transports her to another realm.

Meanwhile, Jesse's parents, played by R.D. Reid and Tracy Wright, notice that something is wrong with their son. Jesse is behaving strangely and talking to himself, leaving them puzzled and worried. When Jesse discovers that Ms. Fink is an alien, he runs to his parents for help, but they don't believe him. In a scene that highlights Gregory Smith's acting skills, he convincingly portrays the frustration and desperation of a child who is not being taken seriously by the adults around him.

Jesse then turns to his best friend, his science teacher, and the school janitor for help. With their help, he embarks on a quest to rescue Ms. Fink and bring her back to the right dimension before it's too late. Along the way, they face numerous challenges, including other creatures from the Shadow Zone who are determined to capture and keep Ms. Fink forever.

Throughout the movie, Shelley Duvall's performance as Ms. Fink is one of the highlights. She perfectly balances the comedic aspect of the character with her sinister demeanor, making her character both hilarious and creepy. Her scenes with Gregory Smith, where she tries to convince him to help her find her way back to her own dimension, are among the most memorable.

The special effects are also noteworthy, especially considering the movie's low budget. The Shadow Zone creatures are convincing and the scenes that take place in the alternate dimension are well-done. The movie also has a distinct 90s feel, with some of the outfits, hairstyles, and technology on display.

Shadow Zone: My Teacher Ate My Homework is ultimately a movie about the power of imagination and the importance of keeping an open mind. It's a fun and imaginative romp that will appeal to children and adults alike, with a great cast, fun storyline, and plenty of laughs and thrills. It may not be a classic, but it's definitely worth a watch for anyone who loves a good sci-fi/fantasy comedy.

Shadow Zone: My Teacher Ate My Homework is a 1997 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 32 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.4.

My Teacher Ate My Homework: A Dark Horror Film for Children

E very year, horror fans attempt the daunting task of watching a horror movie for each day in the month of October. Aptly named 31 Days of Horror , the challenge usually consists of having viewers watch a mixture of their favorite classic horror films, as well as popular genre staples and recent releases that may be new to them. In celebration of the spooky season, we at MovieWeb have assembled our own suggestions for the month, providing a plethora of favorites from our contributing editors and writers. Check out our 31 Days of Horror posts every day this October, and embrace all the freaky found footage, stalking slashers, and vicious vampires that you could ever hope for. Today, we kick off Day Twenty of MovieWeb’s 31 Days of Horror with the 1997 film adaptation of My Teacher Ate My Homework from J.R Black’s children's horror book series called The Shadow Zone.

In the early to mid-1990s, R.L. Stine was the most dominant and well-known author when it came to the world of children’s horror novels. With stories like Night of the Living Dummy, Monster Blood, and The Haunted Mask becoming iconic overnight through the Goosebumps franchise , this line of spooky tales for tweens was popular enough to eventually be adapted into a four-season anthology that premiered on Fox Kids beginning in October 1995. Easily stretching the life of this entertaining brand for years to come, official video games, comics, and two feature films were also created as well throughout the years that have paid homage to the original creepy characters.

As with any other piece of pop culture that made a mark on society, all sorts of similarly themed media have popped up since then that have all hoped to cash in on the culture that the small-screen version of Goosebumps created. Albeit never equaling Stine’s notoriety, some of these titles did grow to have a level of popularity, like the infamous Are You Afraid of The Dark , Bonechillers, and the more recently released Deadtime Stories . On the other hand, there has been one particular series that seems to be left out of the conversation every year when Halloween comes about, and people start talking about all of their nostalgic cinematic scares. It’s no wonder, though, given the fact that just thirteen books were made from The Shadow Zone franchise, and out of those titles, only two were given the live-action treatment.

The Grim Reaper Starts the Show

While the clichéd title is made to attract children's imagination and holds no tether to the film except for one small scene, the movie surprisingly incorporates some very sinister ideas and themes that could frighten any adult. Before the main story even begins, viewers are brought inside an empty public school.

With the classroom lights suddenly shattering and the locker doors banging back and forth, we come face to face with what could only be described as a reptilian Grim Reaper. This horrid humanoid creature explains that if our forthcoming main character chooses wrong in the following scenario, he could be locked forever in the Shadow Zone. While the concept of a rather ordinary-looking school being a place of torment is quite cheesy, actor MacKenzie Grey’s dedication and mannerisms really do send shivers up your spine as The Reaper.

Starring none other than The Shining’s Shelley Duvall as Mrs. Fink and a young Gregory Smith as Jesse Hackett, the thirteen-year-old is seen to have a terrible relationship with his teacher, who constantly scolds him for late homework and missing assignments. On the way home one day, he comes across a very eerie vintage shop called Shadowland with his friend Cody and Cody’s mystically inclined big sister, Geneva.

Seemingly drawn to a doll that looks like his teacher, the shopkeeper ominously warns Jesse about the two finding each other for a reason before ultimately letting him take it home. At this point, viewers already know that the doll will come alive and wreak havoc. While this does happen, Shadow Zone takes it one step further and ties voodoo aspects into this film as well.

Shelley Duvall Is a Tormented Teacher

When Jesse notices a small hook in the doll’s arm due to his little sister ( coincidentally named Annabelle ) playing with it at some point, Mrs. Fink comes to school the next morning with her arm in a sling. When Annabelle drags the doll down the stairs, and its head smashes against every step on the way, Mrs. Fink falls down a flight of concrete stairs outside the school, bleeds from the head, and gets a concussion.

Later, when Mrs. Fink confronts Jesse in the hallway at school, and the doll notices her hostile demeanor from inside the locker, the toy actually attacks. Even though the scene itself is visually comedic , the movie’s constant reminder that the doll was brought to life by Jesse’s hatred for Mrs. Fink pays off here. The doll’s power is so fierce that the innocent teacher is pushed over a garbage can and is knocked unconscious once again. This time, she ends up in the hospital. While it’s not perfectly executed, the mere fact that the movie sinisterly uses a child’s hatred as the force behind an evil doll who comes close to killing is just chilling to the core.

It then becomes apparent that Jesse is on the clock to end this evil paranormal spirit because the doll reveals that when an all-important but mysterious cycle is to be completed, Jesse will become the inanimate object’s hypnotized servant forever. Blackmailing the boy even more to not interrupt its plans, the sinister doll not only ends up threatening to enact violence on his sister and father but actually goes through with it when setting up a trap for Jesse's mother in the kitchen one night.

When replacing a light bulb, the chair that Jesse’s mom is standing on is swiped away, and she falls down, hurting herself badly. Along with Mrs. Fink, Jesse’s own mother is now rushed to the emergency room as well. By the climax of My Teacher Ate My Homework , there is no real comedy left between the lines. Two people are in the hospital because of a malevolent paranormal entity, and this is a children’s movie!

The Evil Has Entered Another Host

While the conclusion haphazardly revolves around Jessie and Cody breaking into Mrs. Fink’s house in order to retrieve items that they use for a séance towards destroying the doll once and for all, the dark themes are not through yet. Even though the doll is successfully banished, the mini-sized Mrs. Fink puts a spell on Annabelle before she is captured.

In a deep trance, the little girl is literally one step away from walking off the pier at the end of the beach and drowning before Jessie saves her. With three different people in critical condition by the movie’s end, everything magically fixes itself with all of these characters reappearing and reuniting. Even the cops arrive after looking for a lost Mrs. Fink, who somehow ends up on the same dock, tranced out of her mind.

Viewers have to hold their breath, though, as the teacher is mysteriously present, holding a stuffed animal that blinks at Jessie right when they are about to leave. In a fright, Jesse drops the bear and runs off to regather with his family. What is Mrs. Fink’s connection with this evil entity? Does she have as much hatred for Jessie as he did/does for her? Does Jesse still hold resentment toward Mrs.Fink? These questions are never answered. But one thing is for certain. For a movie that shockingly has detailed violence, contains themes of voodoo-based torture, teases the death of a child, and intelligently includes cops when other horror movies do not, My Teacher Ate My Homework is a Halloween film that everybody should consider watching during this haunted month.
