JOB DESCRIPTION

The University of British Columbia’s Malcolm Knapp Research Forest is seeking two highly motivated students from Forestry, Conservation or Wood Science, to assist research forest staff with field and office duties for the summer of 2024. The successful candidates will work closely with all staff members, including the manager, resident forester, research coordinator, and administrative. The undergraduate research assistant positions offer students a fantastic opportunity to strengthen their field skills while gaining valuable knowledge and hand-on experience working on a variety of challenging and diverse assignments. This is a unique opportunity to be immersed in an environment of research, education and demonstration in the field of forestry and allied sciences.

WORK PERFORMED

The undergraduate research assistant will be exposed to a variety of tasks and assignments, including but not limited to:

  • Forest patrolling for fire and fire suppression activities
  • Fire equipment training and maintenance
  • Silviculture surveys, assessments and maintenance of plantations
  • Timber cruising using prisms
  • Measuring tree attributes (heights, diameters, and general health assessments)
  • Use of ArcGIS Pro for map production
  • Use of GPS technology, including setting up data dictionaries, collecting data in the field, and post-processing of data using differential correction
  • Integration of GPS data in GIS to create harvesting and road construction maps
  • Routine research project maintenance
  • Recreational trail enhancement, interpretation and extension
  • Other projects as assigned

The undergraduate research assistant receives on the job training in S100 fire suppression, basic chainsaw training, and 4×4 and UTV driver training, as well as general forest and machine safety.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Preference will be given to candidates with the following knowledge, education and certifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a Forestry, Conservation or Wood Science program
  • Basic knowledge of surveying techniques
  • Basic knowledge or fire suppression
  • Basic knowledge of silviculture surveys
  • Some experience with ArcGIS
  • Current first aid OFA Level 1 certification
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license

This position will require the candidate to work outside in all weather conditions. Shifts are 5 days per week, Thursday to Sunday from 10am-6pm.

Assistantships

Teaching Assistantships (TA) positions are available to both undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of Asian Studies.

Roles and responsibilities

TA positions are paid jobs and demand a level of professionalism, responsibility and accountability. Typical duties include:

  • Prepare course materials and/or participate in class instruction
  • Lead discussion sections, tutorials and review sections
  • Keep class records
  • Set, mark and provide feedback on examinations, tests and assignments
  • Hold office hours
  • Invigilate exams and assist instructors to conduct oral exams
  • Manage and maintain a website as well as the learning management system
  • Duplicate materials
  • Order and obtain AV equipment
  • Demonstrate procedures or set up demonstrations
  • Prepare and present a lecture during the term

Application Procedures

For each Winter or Summer session, job openings are posted and all students are informed by an email. Interested students need to fill out an application form, collect supervisor’s signatures and submit them to the Graduate Program Assistant. We take student preferences to work for a specific course into consideration, but we cannot satisfy every request.

Teaching and research assistantships FAQs

TAs must ensure that they do not have a time conflict between their own courses and their TA assignment course. TAs must be available to attend, if necessary, all sessions of the lecture course they are assigned to. Expectations vary by course and should be discussed with the course’s instructor.

How long does a TA position last?

TA assignments begin on the first day of term and continue through the exam period, as required by the course instructor.

How much does a TA position pay?

Graduate Teaching Assistant I (Doctoral) or equivalent: $33.10/hour

Graduate Teaching Assistant II (Masters) or equivalent: $31.85/hour

Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTA1): $17.79/hour

Do I have to be on campus to be a TA?

In consultation with the course instructor, TAs must be available to attend any lectures required, to hold office hours, and to conduct other duties that require their presence on campus.

What type of experience should I highlight in my application?

Any relevant experience should be noted. This may include tutoring, mentoring, and/or leadership experience. If you have worked as a TA at another institution or as an undergraduate, this information should also be highlighted.

What can I do to prepare for a position as a TA?

  • Attend all orientation sessions provided for TAs.
  • Take an instructional skills/teaching workshop. (See UBC’s Centre for Teaching Learning & Technology for details.).

Undergraduate Research Assistants-01

Do you have an interest in community-based education and research? Do you want to explore the role of education within varied community organizations? Are you interested in contributing to local decolonizing efforts?

Description

With the guidance of a community-based organization, the responsibilities of this position will be directly related to the mandate of the research funding regarding the compilation of data for the SSHRC Partnership titled, Co-Curricular Making: Honoring Indigenous Connections to the Land, Culture, and Relational Self*. The position involves supporting community partner efforts towards collaborating and co-organizing the research activities and outputs in support of curricular Indigenization.

Organizational Status

This position will interact with members of the research team and is expected to report to the community partner and research team.

Work Performed

In conjunction with the community partner’s oversight, the RA will:

  • Attend meetings and support the conduct of research
  • Develop written progress reports, summary/milestone information, and curricular materials and resources, supporting land-based, diversity and inclusion practices for educators & schools
  • Foster project objectives and milestones and advise the research team of recommendations
  • Identify, problem solve, and implement the removal of barriers for successful project activities, with emphasis on resolving issues and facilitating collaborative relationships between researchers, collaborators, and all stakeholders
  • Assist the community partner with routine tasks associated with meetings, data collection, organization, and needed preparation
  • Transcribe data (field notes, observations, reflections, interviews, etc)
  • Other related duties as required.

Supervision Received

Works under the direct supervision of the community partner in accordance with detailed oral or written instructions; routine duties are carried out under general supervision.

Supervision Given

None but may explain work sequences to others.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

This position will work largely independently, but work will be checked and reviewed regularly by the Community Partner and Principal Investigators.  This person will know how to prioritize the tasks at hand and ensure that all of them are completed over a reasonable time frame.

Minimum Qualifications

Grade 12 diploma and currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at UBC.

Candidates should have experience with First Nations communities within the Okanagan Valley. Excellent communication/interpersonal skills. Excellent organizational skills. Working knowledge of computer applications for word processing and spreadsheets, as well as Internet browsers and email applications. A demonstrated ability to work both independently and within a team environment is critical; must be self-directed.

Job Summary The primary work for this Research Assistant / Technician Level 4 will be to develop, organize, schedule and perform complex recovery surgical procedures in mice. This requires a high degree of skill and expertise. Experience in primary tissue sample collection and processing, molecular biology techniques will be an asset, with opportunities to learn new skills in the team. Supervising and assisting junior research assistants and students in the laboratory when required. The salary and job grade will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Organizational Status Reports directly to the principal investigator, Dr. Fabio Rossi. Oversees and manages workload assignments for junior technical staff and students of the laboratory. Work Performed

  • Design, development and documentation of standard operating procedures following biosafety standards and protocols. Development and writing novel protocols and safety procedures
  • Work as the intermediary between the Rossi Lab and the UBC veterinary and Animal Care Services teams, collaborate with animal care and review
  • General animal husbandry and handling, subcutaneous, intraperitoneal and intramuscular bolus deliveries, saphenous vein and tail vein injections and blood sampling
  • Recovery surgical procedures in mice, such as establishing parabiotic mouse pairs, coronary artery ligation and thoracic artery constriction to observe myocardial remodeling in transgenic animals, implantation of osmotic pumps for drug deliver, femoral artery ligation to induce ischemic damage
  • Development of new surgical protocols and adapting published protocols to meet UBC ACS requirements
  • Post-surgical follow-up and care of animals, including collaborative management of possible out-of-hours responsibilities to follow stringent timelines when providing care for experimental animals
  • Preparation and maintenance of animal protocol applications, compliance monitoring and appropriate surgical record-keeping
  • Mouse colony maintenance and co-operation with team members to facilitate stock management
  • Tissue harvesting, paraffin embedding and cryopreservation, histological staining, immunofluorescence assaying of samples
  • Acquisition and analysis of primary cell populations by enzyme digestion, flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy
  • Performing molecular biology techniques: DNA, RNA and protein extractions, recombinant DNA work, PCR, qRT-PCR, Western blotting, immunoprecipitation and ELISA
  • Assisting team members with data analysis and preparation for scientific presentations and manuscript writing; assisting with grant writing
  • Attending and presenting data in scientific meetings and conferences
  • Ordering, receiving and stocking reagents
  • Maintaining required scientific equipment in working order and troubleshooting problems with complex equipment.

Consequence of Error/Judgement Decisions made in this position are crucial to the operation of the laboratory. Any errors made could jeopardize the experiments performed, damage the reputation of the laboratory and may also cease existing grant funding. Supervision Received Works mostly independently under minimum supervision by Principal Investigator, Dr. Fabio Rossi, specifically for issues that deviate from established policy and procedure. Supervision Given The incumbent will be responsible for supervising and training new members of the team, including junior technical staff and new students. Minimum Qualifications Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.   • Previous rodent surgery experience preferred
  • Minimum 4 years of related animal husbandry and molecular biology experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated experience in the management of mouse colonies carrying multiple transgenes is required
  • Demonstrated experience working with trainees and with training duties
  • Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to be thorough, accurate, and have a high level of attention to detail
  • Must possess interpersonal and organization skills, have the ability to accept responsibility.

Research Associates

Research Associates are full-time or part-time term appointees who primarily conduct research with no formal teaching duties.

Appointments of Research Associates are governed by Policy AP4 – Faculty Term Appointments . This title is available only to those persons who hold the PhD degree or other equivalent qualifications or work experience in their field of research. Such appointments do not lead to a tenured appointment.

An appointment as an Honorary Research Associate may be made in recognition of services rendered to a faculty, department, or school. No salary is provided.

Other classifications of research staff are available for those not meeting the eligibility requirements of a Research Associate. Please contact your Human Resources Advisor/Associate for more information.

  • Research Associate positions must be advertised in accordance with UBC’s faculty advertising guidelines . If the appointee is a not a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, please see the recruiting foreign academics  page.
  • Advertising is not required for honorary research associates.

Offer process

Every Research Associate must receive an offer letter , which must be signed by the Research Associate accepting the terms of the offer. Offer letters are important in verifying the verbal contract between the Research Associate and their department, as well as detailing expectations and commitments of both parties.

Immigration process

Foreign Research Associates are required to obtain a temporary work permit in order to be employed and perform work for UBC. Please review the recruiting foreign academics page, which outlines the steps involved and provides details on obtaining a temporary work permit and Social Insurance Number (SIN), and also provides information on what is expected after the foreign Research Associate arrives at UBC.

Appointment process

1. Research Associate appointments can be made one year at a time and can be renewed indefinitely. Please review our checklist for required documentation. In addition, please submit proof of advertising.

2. Honorary Research Associate appointments can be made for 10 years at a time and can be renewed. Please review our checklist for required documentation. If appointed with an end-date of June 30th, the appointment can be renewed through the annual renewal process that occurs every spring.

Salaries and benefits of Research Associates are paid from research grants or contracts. Starting salaries are negotiated between the new Research Associate and their department and will change as per the mandated increases approved by the Board of Governors.

Additionally salaries may also increase annually upon the anniversary of the hire date if the offer or reappointment letter contains language that specifically allows for a salary increase upon reappointment.

There is no salary scale for Research Associates but there is a minimum per annum salary required for full-time appointments which will be pro-rated for part-time appointments. Research Associates are eligible for salary increases under the provincial mandate.

Minimum salary & increases are as follows:

  • May 1, 2019: $56,732 (1.0% GWI & 0.75% ESD)
  • July 1, 2019: $57,867 (2% GWI)
  • July 1, 2020: $59,024 (2% GWI)
  • July 1, 2021: $60,205 ( 2% GWI)
  • July 1, 2022: $62,692 (3.24% GWI + 0.25/hour)
  • July 1, 2023: $66,924 (6.75% GWI)
  • July 1, 2024: $68,932 (3% GWI)

A minimum salary is also required for benefit eligibility .

Benefits and pension

Research Associates may be eligible for pension and benefits. The normal eligibility requirements for pensions and benefits are:

  • an appointment of at least 1 year in length
  • a minimum 50% appointment
  • must meet the minimum salary requirements for that position

Note that fellowship earnings do not attract pension and benefits.

For those Research Associates ineligible for pension and benefits, the Province of BC requires enrolment with the BC Medical Services Plan and we also recommend that you have private coverage where necessary.

Vacation and leaves

Vacation entitlement is subject to negotiation with your supervisor but is at minimum 2 weeks per year with salary and benefits. Refer to the vacations page for full details.

Research Associates are eligible for the following types of leaves:

  • sick leave;
  • maternity, parental, and adoption leave;
  • general leave (without salary): Possible up to a year at a time, but normally limited to a maximum of 2 years and must be authorized by Department Head and Dean.
  • jury duty or court witness request; or
  • compassionate care leave.

Where a Research Associate is given formal teaching duties, a concurrent teaching appointment will be given.

Conflict resolution

The best way to handle a problem between a Research Associate and their supervisor is to identify it while it’s small and manageable, and collaborate on finding a solution. Unresolved problems may be brought in confidence to the attention of the Department Head. If an issue cannot be resolved by the Department Head, it may be brought in confidence to the attention of the Dean. Faculty Relations can also be contacted at any time for assistance.

Co-operative education is an optional program that allows you to gain work experience as you work on your doctoral degree. You will have access to various resources to help support your job search and build career skills.

Research on co-op programs has shown that students typically return to their studies after co-op terms highly motivated and increasingly successful in their studies (marks, completion rates, etc.).

The application window for PhD Co-op is open once per year, and usually closes in the first week of October.

Visiting Faculty

DESCRIPTION

The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest departments within the School of Medicine with approximately 250 Faculty, 127 postdoctoral fellows (both MDs and PhDs) along with over 320 support staff (not including hospital staff). In addition, the Department has 68 clinical residents distributed across the Divisions. The missions of research, education and patient care are intertwined, and are integral to the goals of the department.

The Department manages a university-affiliated children's health system with the physicians and leadership of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Rady Children's Hospital, and Rady Children's Specialists of San Diego, a Medical Practice Foundation, unifying pediatric patient care, research, education and community service programs.

Under the supervision of the PI, the incumbent will support the clinical research and quality improvement efforts of the study team. Support the clinical research operation; communicate with research participants, schedule visits, assist in the handling and processing of biological samples; shipping of samples for general lab assays and data entry. May be involved in clinical and quality improvement projects that also involve recruitment, and ensuring performance of protocols according to schedule, including data entry and reporting on data results back to participants. Incumbent will assist in the day-to-day operation of the research team. Responsible for assisting with and ensuring the quality of data collected, maintaining databases, ensuring adequate lab supplies for the function of the lab. Under supervision maintain a sample flowchart of active clinical studies and or quality improvement projects and how participants flow through these project protocols as well as monitoring study/project samples/data collections. Will assist clinical team with participant home study visits to collect questionnaire data and clinical specimens. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and one year of laboratory or field experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience in processing and shipping laboratory specimens-ambient and frozen. Demonstrated experience with guidelines of biohazardous handling. Knowledge and strict utilization of universal precautions when handling laboratory specimens.

Experience managing biological samples, storage, and inventory.

Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.

Proven effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

Ability to prioritize workload and work independently.

Ability to maintain and protect confidentiality of participant information.

Excellent problem-solving skills with ability to propose alternative strategies to resolve issues.

Must be IATA-certified to process and ship human specimens.

Certified in hazardous materials handling.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and Clinical Research experience.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $40,340 - $46,771 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $19.32 - $22.40

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).

Candidate would be assisting with Community Based Participatory related research projects and initiatives, within the Cancer Health Equity Research Program.

Provides project planning, documentation and administrative support to assigned or designated project teams. Develops, updates and communicates project timelines, milestones and tasks. Assists with development and tracking of project budget. Documents software support and process issues. Communicates project needs and issue priorities to vendor or development team. Escalates issues to appropriate management, vendor or development team. Supports workflow analysis, requirement gathering and documentation activities. May assist with testing of software and documentation of findings. May manage a component of a project within approved scope, schedule, resources and quality baseline with oversight by project manager(s) or departmental leadership. Performs additional job-related functions as detailed by immediate supervisor.

High School Diploma or GED. Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio).Demonstrated knowledge and experience with project management tools, e.g. Microsoft Project. Demonstrated skill in using desktop/office efficiency tools, e.g. MS Excel, MS Word. Demonstrated communication skills, including ability to articulate complex topics to teams and management. Demonstrated excellence in organizational and follow-up skills. Demonstrated competence in using personal workstation and other office tools. Self-motivated and seeks assistance as necessary.
