One evening, I was alone at home, when a smartly dressed couple knocked on my door. The woman smiled and asked me if she could see my parents. I told her that they had gone out but would be back soon. I invited them into the house.I was surprised when they suddenly grabbed me. They tied up my hands, gagged my mouth and blindfolded me. I was huddled into a car and driven off to an unknown destination. I was too frightened to do anything. After driving for about two hours the car came to a stop. They dragged me out of the car and pushed me into a corner. When my blindfold was removed, I found myself in a dark hut. I slowly moved towards the locked door and I heard them saying that they were going to ask a ransom of $20,000 from my father in exchange for my return. When I heard this, I was very frightened.Finally I decided that I had to escape from these kidnappers. I looked around the dark room. There was no means of escape except for a small window, which was locked. I waited till the kidnappers had fallen asleep before I tried to open the window. I managed to prize open the window with my penknife, which I carried in my pocket. Quietly I slipped out of the house and ran as fast as my legs could carry me. Since it was very dark, I stumbled and fell a couple times. Finally I reached the main road. I saw a car approaching. I waved and stopped the car. I told the driver what had happened. He took me to the nearest police station, and made a report. Then I led the police to the place where I was held captive earlier. The kidnappers were arrested.My parents were happy to see me safe and sound. The police officer praised me for my courageous deed.

4 in ‘God’s Misfits’ Group Charged in Disappearance of 2 Kansas Women

The four arrested on murder and kidnapping charges were from Oklahoma and, according to a relative, were members of an anti-government group by that name, the authorities said.

Four people involved in an anti-government group they called God’s Misfits have been arrested on murder and kidnapping charges in the disappearance of two Kansas women who last month were likely targeted over a custody dispute, the authorities said.

Two bodies were recovered as part of the investigation, and on Tuesday evening they were identified as the missing women, Veronica Butler, 27 and Jilian Kelley, 39, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said on X .

Tifany M. Adams, 54; her boyfriend, Tad B. Cullum, 43; Cora G. Twombly, 44; and her husband, Cole E. Twombly, 50, were arrested on Saturday and each was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of kidnapping and one count of conspiracy to commit murder in the first degree. Court documents did not include contact information for lawyers for any of the four people. They were being held without bond at Texas County Jail, in Guymon, Okla., The Oklahoman reported.

On March 30, Ms. Butler and Ms. Kelley were traveling from Hugoton, Kan., to Oklahoma. They were reported missing after Ms. Butler didn’t arrive at a birthday party later that day. Members of Ms. Butler’s family found her vehicle abandoned that same day in a rural area of Texas County, Okla., which is about 270 miles northwest of Oklahoma City.

Ms. Twombly’s 16-year-old daughter, who is not named in the charging documents, said that her mother had told her that she and the three other people arrested were involved in Ms. Butler’s and Ms. Kelley’s deaths.

The daughter said that all four charged were part of what the authorities said they called God’s Misfits, an anti-government group with a religious affiliation, and that there had also been an attempt to kill Ms. Butler in February.

Investigators later found that the members of God’s Misfits held weekly meetings in their homes. There was a fifth person attending those meetings who was not arrested. Little else was known about the group’s origins or membership, the authorities said.

Hunter McKee, a spokesman for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation described the case as “tragic” during a news conference on Monday. “You have two people who are dead and four people that committed an absolutely brutal crime,” he said.

Ms. Adams is the grandmother of Ms. Butler’s two children, and the affidavit for her arrest said that there had been a “problematic” custody battle between them. The children’s father, Wrangler Rickman, is Ms. Adams’s son and was in a rehabilitation facility at the time of the disappearance. Ms. Adams had custody of the children.

Mr. McKee said that the children were safe, but he would not say where they were.

The custody battle began in February 2019, the affidavit said. Ms. Butler’s attorney told investigators that she was likely to be granted more time with her children at a hearing in April.

On March 30, Ms. Butler was scheduled to meet Ms. Adams and pick up her children for a visit that would be supervised by Ms. Kelley as ordered by the court, according to the affidavit. Ms. Kelley, a pastor’s wife, was one of three people approved by the court to supervise Ms. Butler’s weekly visits with her children. Ms. Butler planned to bring her daughter to a birthday party, but when she did not arrive, her family started to look for her. Family members contacted the police after finding her abandoned vehicle.

There was blood on the road near the vehicle and Ms. Butler’s glasses were found on the road near a broken hammer, the affidavit said. A pistol magazine was found inside Ms. Kelley’s purse, but no pistol was found.

Ms. Adams told investigators that Ms. Butler had called before the meeting and said that she was not going to be able to make it. The investigation found that three prepaid cellphones that Ms. Adams purchased in February had been in the area where Ms. Butler’s car was found when she disappeared.

Two of the three prepaid phones purchased by Ms. Adams were found to have been at a private property that was about 8.5 miles from where Ms. Butler’s car was found, according to tracking data, the affidavit said. Ms. Adams’s boyfriend, Mr. Cullum, rents a pasture on that property for cattle grazing.

At the property, investigators found “that a hole had been dug and filled back in and covered with hay,” the affidavit said.

Investigators interviewed family members of the four suspects, including at least two who indicated that their relatives were involved in the women’s disappearance.

The pontifical foundation Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) on April 19 condemned the kidnapping and murder of a catechist in Burkina Faso, West Africa.

In a news brief, ACN informed ACI Prensa, CNA’s Spanish-language news partner, that catechist Edouard Yougbare was kidnapped on Thursday night by “terrorists, and his lifeless body was found near Zigni this morning.”

According to other local sources, along with Yougbare, who was a member of  Saatenga parish in Fada Gourma, Burkina Faso, more people were kidnapped and murdered.

“We are heartbroken by the loss of Yougbare. He served his community faithfully and his death is a devastating blow for the people of Saatenga,” lamented Spaniard María Lozano, press and public relations director of ACN International.

“Catechists in Burkina Faso are on the front lines, risking their lives for the good of their people. Just two months ago, another catechist was murdered in the Diocese of Dori while leading a Sunday celebration in a chapel,” she noted.

ACN encouraged all the faithful to pray for the families of the victims and the people of Saatenga, hit hard by these events.

Perilous security situation in Burkina Faso

“The security situation in Burkina Faso has become drastic in recent years, with Christians being particularly targeted by terrorist groups inspired by Islamic extremism,” ACN explained.

In the city of Essakane in the Diocese of Dori, 15 Christians were killed and two others were injured by terrorists during Sunday Mass on Feb. 25.

In January 2023, the Diocese of Dédougou reported that Father Jacques Yaro Zerbo, 67, was murdered by unidentified armed men in the country’s northwest.

In May 2019 , Spanish Salesian Father Fernando Hernández, 60, was murdered by a former cook at the Salesian center in the town of Bobo Dioulasso.

The violence in the country is part of a broader conflict that involves several countries in the African Sahel region, such as Mali, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria, where Christians also suffer persecution.

ACN remains committed to helping the Church in Burkina Faso. In 2023, it collaborated on 56 projects in the country with an investment of more than 1 million euros (about $107 million.)
