Harry Potter Series

Harry Potter was a series of books authored by one of the most eminent writers of our generation, J.K. Rowling. These books showcase the wizarding world and its workings. J.K. Rowling has been so successful at weaving a picture of this world, that it feels real. Although the series contains seven books, I have a particular favourite. My favourite book from the series is The Goblet of fire.

When I started reading the book, it caught my attention instantly. Even though I had read all the previous parts, none of the books caught my attention as this one did. It gave a larger perspective into the wizarding world. One of the things which excite me the most about this book is the introduction of the other wizard schools. The concept of the Tri-wizard tournament is one of the most brilliant pieces I have come across in the Harry Potter series.

In addition, this book also contains some of my favourite characters. The moment I read about Victor Krum’s entry, I was star struck. The aura and personality of that character described by Rowling are simply brilliant. Further, it made me become a greater fan of the series.

What Harry Potter Series Taught Me?

Even though the books are about the world of wizards and magic, the Harry Potter series contains a lot of lessons for young people to learn. Firstly, it teaches us the importance of friendship. I have read many books but never come across a friendship like that of Harry, Hermoine, and Ron. These three musketeers stuck together throughout the books and never gave up. It taught me the value of a good friend.

Further, the series of Harry Potter taught me that no one is perfect. Everyone has good and evil inside them. We are the ones who choose what we wish to be. This helped me in making better choices and becoming a better human being. We see how the most flawed characters like Snape had goodness inside them. Similarly, how the nicest ones like Dumbledore had some bad traits. This changed my perspective towards people and made me more considerate.

In conclusion, while there were many movies made in the books. Nothing beats the essence and originality of the books. The details and inclusiveness of books cannot be replaced by any form of media. Therefore, the Goblet of Fire remains to be my favourite book.

My Favourite Book

Books are friends who will never abandon you. This saying rings true for me because books have always been there for me. I like to read books. They have the ability to transport us through worlds without requiring us to leave our current location.  Books have the power to transport people all over the world without them having to leave their homes. My parents and teachers always encouraged me to read when I was younger.  Harry Potter, on the other hand, will always be my favourite book.

J.K. Rowling, one of our generation's most eminent writers, wrote the Harry Potter series. These books depict the wizarding world and its operations. J.K. Rowling has done such a good job of painting a picture of this world that it feels real. Despite the fact that the series consists of seven books, I have a personal favourite.  When I first started reading the book, it immediately piqued my interest. Despite having read all of the previous parts, none of the books piqued my interest as much as this one did.

The introduction of the other wizard schools is one of the things about this book that most excites me. The Triwizard Tournament concept is one of the most brilliant ideas I've seen in the Harry Potter series. In addition, some of my favourite characters appear in this book. Rowling's description of that character's aura and personality is simply brilliant. Furthermore, it made me a bigger fan of the series.Despite the fact that the books are set in the world of wizards and magic, the Harry Potter series contains many lessons for young people to learn.

For starters, it teaches us the value of friendship. I've read a lot of books, but I've never come across a friendship like Harry, Hermoine, and Ron's. Throughout the books, these three musketeers stayed together and never gave up. It taught me the importance of having a good friend.Furthermore, the Harry Potter series taught me that no one is perfect. Everyone carries both good and evil within them. This aided me in making better decisions and becoming a better person. We see how even the most flawed characters, such as Snape, had goodness within them. Similarly, even the nicest characters, such as Dumbledore, had flaws. This altered my attitude toward people and made me more considerate.

Finally, these books provided me with hope. They taught me what hope is and that there is light at the end of the tunnel. It gave me the courage to hold on to hope even in the darkest of times, just as Harry had done his entire life. These are some of the most important lessons I took away from Harry Potter. In conclusion, while many films have been made based on the books. Nothing beats the essence and uniqueness of the books. The details and inclusiveness of books cannot be replaced by any other form of media. As a result, The Goblet of Fire is still my favourite book.

Any good short essay on your favorite book will ask how valuable it is. You need to justify it, and why it was important enough to write about. When writing about a book’s value, you are writing about its topic. What is it teaching people? What merits the focus it has? You need to justify your choice according to these questions.

Remember that there is always value in books. You only need to show people what that book means to you.

When you are preparing to write, look at some essay samples. Model your essay on your favorite book on a previously written sample, and you stand a good chance of writing a good essay.

Samples are good for a few reasons:

  • They show you what is expected in an essay
  • They can show different writing styles
  • They can give you ideas
  • They can inspire you to try new ways of writing
  • They show how different people approach the essays

Your first step in writing should be to create a writing plan. The essay on the book you like the most will involve a lot of separate elements. A writing plan will help you remember everything.

First of all, write a plan that has simply the basics in it. Put in paragraph headings. Put in your quotes. Now, look at it. What else do you want in there? Do you want your thesis statement? Do you want notes about what to put in each paragraph? Put in what you think will be helpful.

Anybody reading an essay entitled ‘my favorite book’ will want to hear writing from the heart. Don‘t just write a generic essay. Make it clear what this book means to you, specifically. This is the way to make your essay stand out in a crowd. This is what gets you noticed.

A key to good writing is actually wanting to do it. Write from the heart, and you will find the act of writing much easier.

There are many ways you can go about writing an essay about books. But whatever their focus, try and spend at least some time talking about what you liked. You will attract people’s attention by talking about what you like. Spend at least one paragraph on your favorite book in talking about how much you like it. It will make your essay even better. Talk about what you like, and people will remember it after they finish reading.

When writing, try and list any advantages a book has. People might be reading your favorite book essay for class and wondering why it is your favorite. Let them know. List the advantages the book has over other books.

Every book has something in it to make it worthwhile. You just need to show other people what that is. This is what will make your essay stand. Your essay will tell people what it means to you, rather than be generic.

The key to writing your favorite book essay is to act like you are trying to sell the book. The point of an essay is to keep people reading to the very end. Try and think beyond this point. What do you want people to do when they finish reading an essay about your favorite book? Do you want them to move on with their lives, or do you want them to read the book?

Obviously, you want them to read the book.

Don’t attempt to tackle the entire essay at once. When writing about your favorite book essay in English, try and do it in bite-sized chunks instead. Try and tackle one paragraph a day. This will give you mental space and physical time to handle it all. A lot goes into writing these essays. Doing it a bit at a time will keep you from being overwhelmed. This will also mean you can focus totally on one single element. Themes one day, character the next, and so on.

When you have finished writing, it is time to check your essay. An essay about the book you like most needs to stand by itself. Imagine that the person reading it knows nothing about you or your abilities. If they see spelling and grammar problems, they will react negatively. Make sure you have included everything you need to! The worst thing you can do is hand in an unfinished essay. Check that everything you want to include is there.

Your favorite book essay should not have any spelling or grammar mistakes. Spelling and grammar are the fundamentals of any writing. If you slip upon them, then people have a negative reaction to it. Proofread your work more than once. You would be amazed at how much you can miss. For your last proof, try and step away from the work for a while. You can then come back to it with fresh eyes.

Ask a friend to proofread your favorite storybook essay. Quite often people find themselves too close to their work. They honestly can’t see mistakes or inaccuracies. To avoid leaving any mistakes, ask a friend to help you. They have fresh eyes, and so will be able to see mistakes much more easily. Getting a friend to proofread means that you will catch any mistakes you might simply have glossed over automatically. You can dramatically improve your work this way.

short essay about my family history

This is an essay on my favorite book. My favorite book is Hogfather , by Terry Pratchett. The overarching story follows an Assassin called Teatime as he tries to kill the Hogfather (the Discworld’s version of Santa), and the people who are trying to stop him.

The major theme of the book is the nature of belief. This is explicitly shown by Teatime stealing teeth, and implicitly by Susan when she helps Death defeats the Auditors. The nature of belief in this book is such that, with no one to believe in the smaller things, the bigger issues, such as Hope, would eventually disappear.

What I love best about this book is the way it shows both sides of a conflict. Even if it does skew in supporting one particular angel, it still shows both sides. I appreciate that the motivations of everyone involved are laid out.

This book is a wonderful read. It combines humor with sincerity to an amazing degree. Even when people are having difficult and dangerous conversations, there is always a feeling that everything will be alright. Pratchett has managed to bring all of his characters to life in the book. Even the characters created solely for this book feel real and lived-in. This makes the themes of the story all the more touching and sincere.

How do you get the best essays? Simple. Go to Essay Zoo, and buy one of their sample essays on the same subject. You can use this work to inspire your own writing! This works particularly well if you are new to this particular style of writing. Having something to learn from, something to compare your own work to is a huge help. Make sure not to copy the sample absolutely. Put your own stamp on the work. Maybe try and reverse engineer the sample paper – try and break it down to see how it all fits together. Samples can be helpful.

Here are some sample essays on my favourite book .

My Favourite Book Essay - 100, 200, 500 Words

Our ability to learn and retain information improves constantly as and when we read more and more ebooks. Reading a book is the finest way to learn something. My parents are avid book collectors. We even have an enormous collection of novels and books at home. The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes is one of them, and it's my favourite.

I love Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's writing. Most of his novels have been read by me. My favourite of them is Sherlock Holmes. The main character of this book series, Dr Watson, is also very fascinating. Upon beginning to read Sherlock Holmes, I fell in love with detective fiction. I have read numerous novels throughout my life since I enjoy reading them.

The Book I Love

Rusty, an orphaned Anglo-Indian young boy, is the protagonist of the novel ‘The Room on the Roof’. He lived with an Englishman named Mr Harrison in a colony of Europeans in Dehradun. Mr Harrison desires that Rusty should grow into a cultured Englishman and makes an effort to keep him away from the local Indians.

On the other hand, Rusty enjoys playing with his Indian friends. Thus, Rusty flees to live with his friends because he cannot stand Mr Harrison's strict rules and domineering personality. As he moves away from Mr Harrison, Rusty learns a lot about India and the Indian lifestyle. But he soon understands that in order to survive, he must work.

He soon starts teaching English to Mr and Mrs Kapoor's son Kishen. They provide him with a space under their roof and feed him in exchange for his help and support. He eventually learns that Mr Kapoor is an alcoholic. His wife Meena is 20 years younger than Mr Kapoor. Meena is attracted to Rusty, and he feels the same way about her. They become very close over time. Rusty experiences joy for the very first time in his entire life.

His joy, however, is short-lived since Meena perishes in a car accident. Both Kishen and Rusty are devastated by the news. Kishen moves in with his aunt after this occurrence, leaving Rusty alone. Rusty makes the decision to settle down in England in order to get over his tragedy and start again.

Books have always been loyal companions that stick by your side. The ones that were always there by my side were books. I like reading books. Without physically going anywhere, they have the ability to allow us to travel through other places. Furthermore, reading books helps us use our creativity. My parents and educators pushed me to read during my childhood. I learned the value of reading from them.

Harry Potter Series

Harry Potter is a series of novels by J.K. Rowling. It feels authentic because J.K. Rowling did such an excellent job at painting a visual of this world. The Goblet of Fire is my favourite volume in this series.

My interest was immediately sparked when I began reading the book. I had read every chapter before, but none of the novels had the same effect on me as this particular one did. A broader view of the wizard's society was provided. This book's presentation of the various wizard schools is among the aspects that most thrill me. One of the most original ideas I've encountered in the books of Harry Potter is the idea of the Tri-wizard competition.

The Harry Potter books offer a lot of principles for young individuals to learn, despite the fact that they are about wizards and the magical world. It first teaches us the value of friendship. Despite the number of novels I've read, I've never encountered a friendship quite like Harry, Hermione, and Ron's. Throughout the entire series of books, these three musketeers remained a team and never gave up. It made me appreciate the significance of a good friend.

I learned that none of us is flawless from the Harry Potter series. It also taught me that each person has both good and bad traits and it is up to us who we want to be and this is the decision only we make for ourselves. Even the characters with the greatest flaws, like Snape, had excellent qualities like intelligence, commitment, ambition, and talent and he fulfilled all his promises.

Although Snape was a cruel and cunning personality he changed and became a good person after Dumbledore gave him a chance. It teaches us that every bad person can change, it might be a difficult process but one should always change for good. These qualities inspire me to be ambitious and committed as this will help me to achieve all the goals in my life.

I learned from them what it is to have hope and believe that there is light on the other side of the tunnel. It empowered me to maintain optimism even at the worst moments, as Harry did throughout his entire life.

A lot of films based on novels have been produced. The authenticity and core of the novels are unmatched. No other type of media can compare to the specifics and inclusivity of books. I still think The Goblet of Fire is my favourite book because of this fact.

Finding good books is a difficult task. Therefore, here are some excellent places to find good books. Here are some of the best tips for finding good books of a particular genre. These tips will help you to find a good book:-

1. Goodreads

Goodreads is a website having a good list of interesting books to read. Millions of books are rated on the site, and you can quickly get hands on some good books. Lots of authors have good active profiles on the website, and you can find the books they like.

2. Read the summary of a book

Surfing the internet for some good book titles is worth it. It is a great way to figure out the best books. You can go to many resources where you can find lots of book summaries. There is a warning, though, when it comes to summaries because reading them is much like getting the notes from your friend instead of going to the class. You are getting a second-hand account for the source material, and that can be good for getting through that material quickly and seeing what at least somebody else believes is the most important point from that material.

3. Finding according to your favorite genre

Every person has their taste and likes. It can be any genre, whether fiction or nonfiction. Identify your favorite genre. Then search for books according to it. It helps easy to find great recommendations.

My favorite books

1. the girl on the train.

It is a great fiction novel and is best for you if you are into thrillers. It is about the experience of three women about relationship struggles. It tells how important it is to build relations and power of the team.

2. The Alchemist

It is an inspirational story of a shepherd about achieving your dreams and working for it very seriously. It tells about the power of hard work and dedication. It says that you can achieve anything by time management and by hard work.

3. The secret

It is about following your passion and manifesting your thoughts into real life. It is a high self- help book to begin your life.

Other great books are the power of habit by Charles Duhigg, Spark by John Ratey, and a lot more.

Benefits of Reading Books and Stories

There are numerous benefits of reading books. Reading books makes you a more mature and sensible person. It shapes your way of thinking about everything. It changes your perspective. It makes you a more imaginative and more intelligent person. Useful reading is helpful. Reading only helps if it’s done often. You can learn through other people’s struggles and can help yourself. You can read it repeatedly. You can pick according to your own choice. Set your own pace.

Reading is a skill to be learned. You need to have an open mindset when you are going through a book. There is no such thing as a bad reader but only bad habits of reading.  If you want to change your life, you have to read more. Consider it as your job daily. You are the result of your daily habits and the content you are consuming. If you do not have a good circle, a pleasant environment, you can change yourself by reading books. It causes a mindset to drift. You can find mentors through books. Foundation should be strong to master your life. Reading is a savior in going through a breakthrough.

When you read books, you are more independent and free. It helps you shape as a person and offers an opportunity to grow again. Essay on My Favourite Book: My Favourite Book Essay for Class 3

Geronimo stilton – the hunt for the golden book.

I love reading and my favourite book is from the Geronimo Stilton series, written by the Italian author Elisabetta Dami. ‘Geronimo Stilton – The Hunt for the Golden Book’ is filled with adventures and is an exciting read. The story of the book starts with the central character, Geronimo Stilton, celebrating a successful stint of 10 years of writing. Grandfather Williams throws a party to celebrate, and Geronimo decides to write a book for this occasion. However, his laptop seems to be missing. So, Geronimo and his friends embark on a journey to find his computer and print the new book, just before the party starts. The book captures the interest of young readers and also provides them a bonus read at the end. There is an extra mini mystery at the end of the book, named ‘The Lake Monster’ that has an equally exciting storyline.

Essay on My Favourite Book: My Favourite Book Essay for Class 4

I am very fond of reading books and one of my recent favourites is ‘BFG’ by Roald Dahl. The story starts with a little girl named Sophie being kidnapped by a big friendly giant (BFG) from the orphanage where she stays. She had seen him blowing good dreams into the windows of children that night.

Although she thought she would be eaten by the giant, he was not like the other giants in Giant Country who gobbled up little children. The BFG was a nice and gentle giant who spent his life blowing happy dreams to little children. He spoke a funny language called gobblefunk that made me laugh out loud throughout the book! It’s not surprising that Sophie also loved the way he spoke.

Soon, BFG and Sophie become friends and he takes her to Dream Country where they catch and bottle dreams and nightmares. Sophie also has another adventure with some of the dangerous giants in Giant Country. While she was hiding in a snozzcumber (a cucumber-like vegetable that BFG loved to eat), she gets accidently eaten by an evil giant named Bloodbottler. This was followed by a hilarious description of how BFG saves her from the eyes of the evil giant.

Towards the end of the book, Sophie starts a fight among the evil giants and plots a plan to imprison them with the help of the queen. She goes to Buckingham Palace where she and the BFG meet the queen and inform her about the evil man-eating giants. They eventually capture the giants and imprison them in a deep pit in London.

The book also has impressive illustrations created by Quentin Blake. These pictures add to the charm of the story and make the book a Roald Dahl masterpiece enjoyed by generations of young readers.

2. Ramayana

I love reading books. I have read many books, and am never bored when I am in the company of books.

One book that has influenced me immensely and has become my favourite is the epic Ramayana in English, written by Valmiki (Author), Arshia Sattar (Translator).  The style is simple and the book is very interesting. Once I take up this book I can’t put it down.

The book presents Lord Rama as the embodiment of virtues. We also learn about the sufferings he underwent to uphold his principles. Devi Sita is a devoted wife, ready to undergo any hardship or suffering for her husband.

Bharata is a glorious example of a good brother. He is an embodiment of respect and sacrifice. His love for Rama has no parallel.

There are many other characters in the book and each one plays an important role in the development of the story. Jatayu is one such key character. Hanuman is another. Both were loyal and devoted to Lord Rama.

The Ramayana upholds basic human values such as devotion, loyalty and service, and condemns lowly qualities like avarice, selfishness, and greed for power. This is a book that can be read for a truly spiritual experience.

I have read and re-read it many times. It refreshes my mind and inspires my soul each time.

Essay on My Favourite Book: My Favourite Book Essay for Class 5

1. the magic of the lost temple.

I love reading and one of my favourite books is ‘The Magic of the Lost Temple’ by Sudha Murthy. The book tells the story of twelve-year old Nooni who goes to spend a summer vacation with her grandparents in a village. Nooni is a curious child and she has an urge to abstract information at all times. This sets the scene for a thrilling mystery at the beginning of the book.

Since Nooni stays in Bangalore with her parents, the shift to the village life is enchanting. She finds joy in playing with her cousins, savouring the food cooked by her grandmother, and living the carefree lifestyle led by the villagers. I particularly enjoyed the narration that makes you feel like you are listening to a story told by your grandmother.

Soon Nooni finds a mysterious ancient stepwell in the midst of a forest. She tries to find the secret behind the stepwell with her friends.

‘The Magic of the Lost Temple’ appeals to children and adults alike, as it weaves a story around the uncomplicated life in a rural village. The book also makes a point on issues of social relevance, such as the importance of toilets in villages, the need to give back to the community, and the respect one should have for heritage sites.

I also liked the illustrations in the book; these were in perfect harmony with the characters sketched out by the author. In a nutshell, this is a heartwarming tale of how Nooni experiences the real value of the simple things in life. This is what makes it a memorable read for me.

A good work of literature is the outcome of years of dedication from the author. I generally like books which have stood the test of time and to which succeeding generations provide their seal of approval. I have read a number of books and there are several which are my favourite. This includes the tragedies of Shakespeare, the novels of Charles Dickens and the plays of George Bernard Shaw.

But there is one book that I particularly enjoy reading and that is the great drama, ‘Macbeth’, by Shakespeare.

Macbeth is the story of an ambitious man and an equally ambitious woman, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth respectively. They commit the murder of King Duncan in their own castle, so that Macbeth could become the King.

Macbeth takes over as the King of Scotland and his wife, Lady Macbeth, becomes the queen. After the first murder, Macbeth plans the murder of his chieftain Banquo, Lady Macduff, and her son, because they are closely related to his enemy Macduff.

The characters of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are very beautifully sketched by Shakespeare. The chief attraction lies in the character of Lady Macbeth.

The instincts that are usually associated with femininity, i.e., motherhood and compassion, are strikingly absent in Lady Macbeth. Instead, she appears to be an ambitious and ruthless person with an insatiable desire for power.

Macbeth teaches us the great moral lesson that the wage of sin is death. Those who take to wrong and immoral courses, like Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, will surely find grief in the course of life. Virtue will surely be rewarded.

3. My Experiments with Truth

We know that food is important for a healthy body. Similarly books are important for a healthy mind. Books are our true friends. They help us understand the world around us. Through books we are able to study the thoughts of different people.

Though I have read many books written by acclaimed authors, “My Experiments with Truth” is my favourite book. It was written by  Mahatma Gandhi , the Father of the Nation. I like the book because of several reasons.

It tells us about the life of the great man who got us freedom from the British. It has been written in a simple and easy-to-understand style. It is very interesting and keeps the reader gripped from beginning to end.

My Experiments with Truth is full of intriguing incidents and moral lessons. Gandhi narrates the stories of  King Harish Chandra  and  Shravan Kumar,  that have influenced him greatly. It is eye opening to read how this great man fought against untouchability and racial discrimination. My Experiments with Truth is a great book indeed!

250 Words Essay on My Favourite Book

Every book has its unique charm, but the one that has captivated my heart the most is George Orwell’s “1984”. This dystopian novel, published in 1949, is a profound exploration of totalitarianism and its effects on society.

Plot and Themes

“1984” is set in a future where society is under the control of the Party, led by Big Brother. The protagonist, Winston Smith, is a low-ranking member of the Party who begins questioning the regime’s oppressive rules. The book’s themes of surveillance, manipulation, and the eradication of individuality are as thought-provoking as they are chilling.

Impact and Relevance

Orwell’s “1984” is not just a book, but a mirror reflecting the potential consequences of absolute power. The concept of “Newspeak”, the language created by the Party to limit free thought, resonates with the manipulation of information in today’s digital age. The omnipresent surveillance reminds us of the growing concerns about privacy in our interconnected world.

Personal Reflection

“1984” is my favourite book because it challenges me to think critically about society and the power dynamics within it. It’s a stark reminder of the importance of freedom, truth, and individuality. Every time I read it, I find new layers of meaning, making it a timeless piece of literature.

In conclusion, “1984” is a powerful book that leaves a lasting impression. Its relevance in today’s world makes it an essential read, and its thought-provoking themes make it my favourite book. It’s a testament to Orwell’s genius that his work continues to inspire and provoke thought, even after seven decades of its publication.

500 Words Essay on My Favourite Book

Books are the repositories of knowledge, wisdom and a source of joy. They are our best companions that open up new dimensions of understanding, and among the multitude of books, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ by Harper Lee holds a special place in my heart.

Unveiling the Narrative

‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ is a masterpiece that elegantly intertwines the themes of innocence, morality, and racial inequality. Set in the backdrop of a small town in Alabama during the Great Depression, the narrative is a profound exploration of human behavior and the complexity of social norms.

Characters and Plot

The story is narrated by Scout Finch, a young girl living with her older brother Jem and their widowed father Atticus, a highly moral and principled lawyer. The plot thickens when Atticus is appointed to defend Tom Robinson, a black man falsely accused of raping a white woman. The trial and its aftermath expose the children to the harsh realities of prejudice and moral hypocrisy.

Symbolism and Themes

The title of the book itself is a metaphorical symbol. Atticus advises his children that it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird as they do nothing but make music for us to enjoy. This can be seen as an allegory for the unjust treatment of innocent individuals in society.

A Lesson in Empathy

One of the most impactful lessons from the book is Atticus’s advice to Scout about understanding others: “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view…until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” This message of empathy, understanding, and tolerance resonates deeply, making it not just a book, but a guide for life.

Impact and Influence

‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ has left an indelible mark on me. It taught me that standing up for what is right, even when the majority is against you, is the true mark of integrity. The courage and righteousness of Atticus Finch have greatly influenced my personal values and ethics.

In conclusion, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ is a timeless classic that delves into the depths of human nature, exploring themes of innocence, morality, and racial prejudice. Its profound impact and the lessons it imparts make it my favorite book. Reading it is not merely an act of leisure, but a journey into the complexities of society and the human mind. It has shaped my perspective towards life and continues to inspire me to stand against injustice and uphold morality, even in the face of adversity.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

Essay on My Favourite Book for Students in English [500 Words]

January 3, 2021 by Sandeep

My Favourite Book Essay: Books are considered man’s best companions as they never tend to leave our side. Reading good books fills our minds with knowledge and take us to different places virtually by sitting in one place. It helps us to enhance our imagination and thinking skills and expands our perspective on things. Books can turn a gloomy day into a beautiful one by filling our minds with positive thoughts and motivational instances.

Essay on My Favourite Book 500 Words in English

Below we have My Favourite Book Essay in English, suitable for class 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 school students.

Books are considered to be objects of intellect and an excellent means of recording information through writing and images. Books can be of any genre and can be the home to many different types of content. The content in them can be the fictional work of someone’s imagination or even the hard-hitting, real-life stories of other people around the world. I’ve loved reading ever since I was a child. I truly believe that books are like an escape – they take you to other worlds and prompt you to look at your environment as well as yourself in another light.

Reading books activates the human imagination, allowing us to conjure up our own beautiful images from carefully crafted strings of sentences that decorate pages of stories you can read over and over. I never restrict myself to a single genre- books are a wonderful medium to explore the world, and I try to use that to the fullest.

My Favourite Book – Things Fall Apart

I love too many books to pick a favourite, but I really loved reading Things Fall Apart by Nigerian author Chinua Achebe. It is a realistic historical fiction novel published in 1958, two years before Nigeria was free from British colonization. A major reason why I love the book is because of its narrative – it uses a unique narrative to tell the story of the main character Okonkwo and his life in the fictional village of Umuofia before and after being colonized by the British.

Chinua Achebe’s goal when writing the book was so that it would serve as a story from which young Nigerians could learn about their past, while at the same time embracing their new future after independence. Achebe wanted to convey the importance of duality- the concept of maintaining your core ideals while changing to accommodate a world which is also constantly changing.

The book tells Okonkwo’s story from his perspective, making him the main protagonist. It is divided into two halves – the first half explores Okonkwo’s present and past, helping readers understand his personality and inability to adjust to changing situations.  In the second half, we see this inflexibility manifest as he refuses to accept his authority being stripped away when the British take over Umuofia.

His inability to handle change takes a major toll on his mental health, leading to the complete deterioration of his psyche at the end of the novel. He serves as a symbol for some aspects of old Nigerian traditions and ways of living, which also gradually deteriorated due to the arrival of the British.  The main reason I really like this book is that upon reading it, I immediately understood the message that the author intended for his audience.

Okonkwo’s psychological deterioration as the novel approaches its end is a clear portrayal of the dangers that await us if we remain stoic and stubborn throughout our lives – we must accept how the world is constantly changing, and every corner of the globe is very different in terms of language, culture, and way of life. By understanding that we are not superior and understanding other people’s perspectives are important, we become more open-minded and accepting, hence allowing the world to become the melting pot of diversity it should be.

Nothing in this world can beat the importance of reading storybooks. When we read a storybook we are immediately shifted to a different fictional world. I recently loved a book based on dance experience. As a dancer, it gives me immense joy to go through it several times. The book is Rasia, by Koral Dasgupta.

The book explores the story of a dancer Rajsekhar Subramanian and his several experiences when he meets a woman named Vatsala in New York. She makes him realize the importance of knowing his own perfect self and also the significance of his wife Manasi in his career. The concept of a dancer knowing himself through his passionate dance attracts my interest the most. Stories like this must be read to even know oneself the best.

Reading storybooks is the biggest asset of human life. Nothing compares itself in this world with the reading of a storybook and the emotions that are experienced after going through it. A storybook is much different from those we read in the educational syllabus.

It is mainly made for fun reading and also to learn something quite easily than the cramped syllabus. For me, reading storybooks is simply an expression of liberty and happiness. It is my time where I let none interrupt. I not only read them but also make my own interpretations and write them down in my journal.

A book that I have journaled really well is an English translation of Chokher Bali by Rabindranath Tagore. The story, in English, undoubtedly is a masterpiece of the great author. The novel tells us about a complex relationship between the four main characters, Mahendra, Binodini, Ashalata, and Behari. The friendships, husband-wife relationships, and the intrusion of an outsider widow, all sum up the story as a complex web of emotions.

The reader feels confused as to support Binodini or simply accuse her of destroying the life of Ashalata and Mahendra. Behari is praised for his attitude and for Mahendra’s fickle mind Binodini suffers throughout her life. As a friend, she shows Ashalata the true nature of her husband. Chokher Bali is my favourite Tagore novel that weaves great complexity into a final solution.

Life is not always s peaceful and happy as it seems to be. We often feel tired when we cannot perform as we want, with our family and friends. In those lonely moments, we need a company with whom we can share our thoughts and feelings. Books, especially storybooks help us to vent these emotions, happy or sad. For me, storybooks are my best friends who help me go through all my problems. Whenever I need a company that can transport me to a different world, then only storybooks can help me do so.

The best storybook which I have read recently is a famous book written by Mulk Raj Anand named The Untouchable. The story is as important to the reader as it is to the countrymen. The story has a central figure called Bakkha who is a latrine cleaner. The boy is of young age and through his generations, he is forced to work as a latrine cleaner. He is tortured tremendously by the higher caste people of his society.

Even Bakha’s sister is equally humiliated by the head priest of the temple who tries to molest her for being a sweeper girl. She is forced to stand afar in the line to fetch water because she comes from the family of the sweepers. Class discrimination gets its most terrific view with the treatment of Bakha when he visits the house of a woman and is humiliated. The woman throws a chapatti at his face because he is a sweeper. The position of a human is destroyed by this ill-treatment.

The story’s significance is that it can be divided into two parts. In the first part, Bakha gets ill-treated by the community members. In the second part, the arrival of Mahatma Gandhi changes the entire course of action in the book. Bakha after getting disrespected leaves the city and goes to a lonely place.

From there he is swept away by a crowd who are attending the protest movement of Gandhiji. He visits the venue and after hearing the words of the Mahatma he is inspired. His final confusion is relieved when a person discusses how a different sort of latrine will be employed in India and for that no cleaner will be required regularly. Here the novel ends.

The novel is lovely to me as it shows the reality of caste discrimination in a colonial country like India. In fact, still, India is a victim of such social issues which need to be addressed seriously and get them removed from society.

So, after going through the entire session, if you still have any doubts regarding the context, put them in the comment section below for further clarification from my side. If this lesson has helped you let us know that as well. Keep browsing our website for more such content.

‘my favourite book – palace of illusions’.

I have read several books. However, none has captivated my interest as the Palace of Illusions. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni writes the book. Born in 1956, Chitra is a well-known Indian American author and poet. An alumnus of the University of Calcutta and the Wright State University, United States, Chitra received a Ph.D. in English from California.

Her book, The Palace of Illusions, narrates the story of Panchali from the epic story of Mahabharat. Chitra has given a feminist interpretation of this epic saga through her narrator, Panchali. The novel focuses on the life of Panchali. It covers those aspects of her life that were missed in the other adaptations of Mahabharat. It gives a detailed account of Panchaali’s life from when she was born. Her birth was no less than a miracle. She was born magically in the fire.

Panchali was the daughter of a wealthy king. She went on to marry the five Pandavas. After her marriage, her hardships have been written at length in the novel. The challenges of living in exile, her relationship with her husband and mother-in-law, and her equation with Lord Krishna have all been covered in the novel.

Panchali is a charismatic and daring character. I loved reading about her. Chitra has portrayed the character and also depicted the events very well.

‘my favourite book – 2 states by chetan bhagat’.

Introduction

I love reading romance novels and one of the best I have read so far is 2 states by Chetan Bhagat. I love the central characters of this novel and how love evolves between them. The novel is said to be partly autobiographical. Bhagat’s own love story inspired him to write this book. The book was loved by the masses so much that it was even adapted into a movie.

The Interesting Story of 2 States

The story is about a young Punjabi boy, Krish, and a beautiful South Indian girl, Ananya. The two studies at IIM Ahmedabad. They become good friends and spend a lot of time together. Soon fall in love with each other. They want to get married but cannot foresee the difficulties ahead. The problem begins when they introduce their parents to each other.

The two families are from different cultural backgrounds and find it hard to get along. Krish and Ananya try hard to pacify the situation and establish a bond between the two. However, things go out of hand, and they decide to part ways. They begin to concentrate on their respective careers, but it is hard. It is difficult for them to forget each other. Finally, things take a turn for the good, and they reunite.

I love the deep bond between Krish and Ananya. Chetan Bhagat has brought these characters to life. They seem just meant for each other. Other characters in the story are also quite strong and opinionated. It is interesting to read about each one of them.

I love this book. I have read it thrice and can read it over and over again. The characters of this story seem so real that I start living with them every time I read this book. I have also seen the movie based on this book and enjoyed it thoroughly.

My Favourite Book Paragraph For Students

Essay on My Favourite Book 400 words – Essay 3

‘my favourite book – a suitable boy.

One of my all-time favourite books is Vikram Seth’s A Suitable Boy. The story is lengthy but doesn’t get boring at any point. It is one of the longest Indian novels ever published in the English language in a single volume. It contains as many as 1349 pages. I love the theme as well as the characters of this story. It took me almost two months to finish reading this novel.

The Interesting Storyline

The story is set in India, which recently attained independence from British Rule. It narrates the story of four families. The story set in the fictional town of Brahmpur focuses on the character of Mrs. Rupa Mehra, who is eagerly looking for a match for her younger daughter, Lata. As I began reading the book, it reminded me of Pride and also Prejudice.

The character of Mrs. Rupa Mehra resembled that of Elizabeth’s mother in the novel. The central theme seemed similar too. However, I like A Suitable Boy more as it is set in India and is more relatable. Seth shares that this work has largely been inspired by the Chinese novel, The Story of the Stone, authored by Cao Xuegin.

I particularly loved Lata’s character. She is a young girl who is daring and likes to make her decisions on her own. She does not conform to the rules set by her mother and the opinion of her brother. The difficulties she faces in due course of the story and the way she tries to overcome them are interesting. Her character inspires me to stand for what I feel is right.

The caste and class tension and the post-partition politics form the novel’s backdrop, making it more interesting.

About the Author – Vikram Seth

Vikram Seth, born in Calcutta in 1952, is an Indian author and poet. He belongs to a well-educated and respectable Indian family. His mother, Leila Seth, became the first Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. Seth has written several exciting novels and poems.

His writings have been immensely appreciated. He has won some prestigious awards for his work. These include the Padma Shri, WH Smith Literary Award, Sahitya Academy Award, Crossword Book Award, and also the Pravasi Bhartiya Samman.

I love Seth’s portrayal of the changing family values and relationships in independent India. Therefore the social and political issues that the country was gripped with post-independence have been interwoven appropriately to set the novel’s tone.

After this incident, Kishen goes to live with his aunt, and Rusty is left alone. To overcome the grief and start life afresh, Rusty decides to get settled in England. Before leaving for England, Rusty meets Kishen. He learns that Rusty has become a thief while Mr. Kapoor has remarried. He takes it as his responsibility to help Kishen come out of the dark world of crime. However he advises Kishen to lead a respectable life.

I love the Protagonist of the Book

I loved the character of Rusty. His journey took me through a roller coaster of emotions. I felt bad about his condition as a kid. The way Mr. Harrison treats him is heart-wrenching. I loved it when he ran away from Mr. Harrison’s house and experienced freedom. I also liked the equation between Meena and Rusty. However, the demise of Meena and the condition of Rusty towards the end saddened me yet again.

‘my favourite book – the god of small things.

The God of Small Things is one of the best books written by an Indian author. This was the first novel of Arundhati Roy. It won her the Booker Prize for Fiction in the year 1997. It also happens to be one of my favourite books. I love its plot, characters, and theme.

About the Author – Arundhati Roy

Arundhati Roy was born in Shillong, Meghalaya. Rajib Roy’s father was a tea plantation manager, and her mother, Mary Roy, was a women’s rights activist. Her parents divorced when she was two years old. She lived with her mother. They settled in Kerala, which was her mother’s hometown. She has studied architecture. She rose to fame with the release of her debut novel, The God of Small Things which became a best seller. It won her many accolades.

Roy is also a political activist. She has been working on environmental and also human rights issues.

The God of Small Things

The God of Small Things narrates the story of a family living in Kerela in the 1960s. It covers several issues, including the evil caste system and also communism. Is the story of Esthappen and Rahel. It shares the joys and sorrows they experienced during their childhood and how the turn of events during their early life evolved them as individuals.

The story moves to and fro, depicting the events occurring in the life of the twins when they were seven years old and as they turned 31. The story is about a dysfunctional family. The relationship between the characters is quite complicated. It is something that passed from generation to generation. Pappachi, the grandfather of Rahel and also Estha, could not do well professionally, and he takes out all his anger and frustration on his wife. He beats her throughout his life. The life of their kids, Ammu and Chako, also screwed up.

Chacko’s wife Margaret betrays him. She falls for another man and leaves Chacko for him. However, soon after, her lover dies. Chacko and Margaret have a daughter named Sophie, who dies a tragic death. Ammu marries a man named Baba, an incompetent and abusive person. Their marriage also falls apart soon. The two have twins, Rahel and Estha.

The main part of the story begins when Sophie, Rahel, and Estha meet. The twins are seven years old at that time. The plot gets interesting with several twists and turns. Ammu’s affair with a low caste man, Velutha, Sophie’s tragic death, Chacko’s hatred for Ammu, and also all that follows keep the readers hooked. It is sad to read how Estha and Rahel have to part ways. The twins who were so close to each other raised in different places and never get to see others for years. At last, they meet and realize how much they love and need each other.

The communist tension, the stress within the family, social issues, and the complicated relationships all written precisely and in a way that the interest is kept alive until the end.

I love the portrayal of the characters. They are all different from each other and have an interesting stories of their own. I especially love the twins. My heart goes out to them. They had a traumatic childhood because of their abusive father and frustrated mother. Their lives didn’t turn out to be great even as they grew up. Therefore only solace they found was in each other’s company which they realized as they reunited after years.

The novel touched my heart. It made me wonder how the rules made by society almost ruin people’s life. I experienced several feelings such as anger, disgust, joy, and love as I went through this book.

Essay on My Favourite Book

Books are considered to be a man’s best friend. They are a powerhouse of knowledge and wisdom. It is rightly said that a book is like a garden carried in the pocket. Among the myriad of books I have read, one that stands out as my favourite is Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird.” This timeless classic is not just a book but a profound narrative that intertwines moral growth, racism, and social injustice in a way that resonates with its readers across generations.

Why “To Kill a Mockingbird” is My Favourite Book

Unforgettable characters.

The characters of “To Kill a Mockingbird” are its strongest suit. Scout Finch, the narrator, is a character whose innocence and curiosity about the world around her make the complex themes of the book accessible to readers. Through her eyes, we see the growth and moral development of characters as they navigate through the social fabric of Maycomb, Alabama. Atticus Finch, Scout’s father, embodies integrity and wisdom. He is a moral beacon, not just for his children but for the community, as he defends a black man, Tom Robinson, accused of raping a white woman. The characters are not just figments of fiction but are etched in reality, making readers reflect on their moral compass.

Themes of Moral Integrity and Social Injustice

The book delves deep into themes of racial injustice, moral integrity, and the loss of innocence. Through the trial of Tom Robinson, Harper Lee presents a stark portrayal of the racial inequalities that plagued the American South. But, more than that, the novel is a call to action, urging its readers to stand up against injustice and to strive for empathy and understanding. The character of Atticus Finch serves as a role model, teaching his children and the readers the importance of seeing the world from another’s perspective, emphasizing, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.”

A Lesson in Empathy and Understanding

One of the most profound lessons “To Kill a Mockingbird” imparts is the importance of empathy. The novel encourages readers to look beyond the surface, to understand that every person has a story, and often, people act out of the pain and suffering that is not visible to the naked eye. The character of Boo Radley is a prime example. Initially portrayed as a figure of mystery and fear, Boo’s true nature is revealed towards the end, teaching Scout and the readers a valuable lesson about kindness, bravery, and the human capacity for goodness.

Impact and Relevance

“To Kill a Mockingbird” has not only won the Pulitzer Prize but has also become a staple in academic curriculums worldwide, testament to its impact and relevance. Its themes of racial injustice, moral courage, and empathy are as pertinent today as they were in the 1960s. The novel serves as a mirror to society, reflecting the biases and injustices that still exist while also illuminating the path towards understanding, acceptance, and equality.

Personal Reflection

For me, “To Kill a Mockingbird” is more than just a book; it is a journey into the heart of humanity. It has taught me the importance of standing up for what is right, even when the world seems against you. It has shown me the power of empathy, of the need to understand and accept others, regardless of our differences. Atticus Finch’s integrity, courage, and wisdom are qualities I aspire to embody in my own life.

In conclusion, “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee is a book that transcends time and age. Its lessons on empathy, justice, and moral integrity are universal. It challenges readers to reflect on their values and prejudices, urging them towards a more compassionate and just world. This book holds a special place in my heart, not just as my favourite book but as a guide to navigating the complexities of the human condition. For anyone looking to understand the essence of humanity, to learn about courage and compassion, “To Kill a Mockingbird” is a must-read. It is a book that changes you, that makes you a better person, and that is why it remains my favourite book.

Books are our great buddies since they provide all the information about the world. One of my favourite books is ‘The Jungle Book’.  Rudyard Kipling wrote ‘The Jungle Book’ in 1894. The story revolves around Mowgli, a human kid raised by wolves in a wild forest.

Bagheera, the loving panther, finds a small boy in the jungle and delivers him to the wolf pack. Mama wolf then raises Mowgli as her baby. Daddy wolf teaches Mowgli all the skills of the forest. Mowgli understands the jungle laws and spends most of his time with Baloo and Bagheera. Sher Khan, a dangerous tiger, wants to eat Mowgli. So Mowgli thinks of a plan to rescue himself and succeeds. Everybody in the forest gets happy.

Reading is something I enjoy doing. I’ve read many novels. But, one book holds a special place in my heart, my favourite book, Panchatantra, written by Vishnu Sharma. It has many stories with pictures. Every story has a moral which teaches something good and meaningful in life. I enjoy reading picture books, and this book offered me a variety of stories.

One of my favourite stories from Panchatantra is ‘The Foolish Lion And The Clever Rabbit’. Once upon a time, there was a greedy lion who used to kill animals. Everyone was afraid of him. To reduce the senseless killing, the animals requested the lion to spare them the fear and decided to send one animal to the lion each day. The lion agreed to this agreement. One day, the animals sent a rabbit. He was an intelligent creature. He reached the lion’s cave late and told him that another big lion had stopped him on the way. He told the greedy lion that this second lion was challenging him. The lion felt very angry and decided to teach a good lesson to the other lion. He asked the rabbit to take him to the place where he met the other lion. The clever rabbit took him to a well and told him that the other lion lived in that well. When the greedy lion looked inside the well, he saw his own reflection and mistook it for the second lion. He jumped into the well to attack his competitor but drowned. The rabbit saved himself and the entire forest because of his quick wit and cleverness.

There are many such stories of wit and intelligence in the Panchatantra books. They introduce us to virtues such as compassion, bravery, wisdom, mental presence, and togetherness.

Books are loyal companions that will never abandon you. This holds true for me because you can always find books with and around me.

Books can transport us to other universes without leaving our current location. Books also help us expand our creativity. My family and teachers always motivated me to read and instilled in me the value of books. The book I like most is the Panchatantra. It is an extremely fascinating book. I have finished the book, but I still continue to read it because it is so entertaining!

One of the most prominent Indian authors and scholars, Vishnu Sharma, wrote Panchatantra in Sanskrit in the 3rd century BC. The book was later translated into many different languages. It is a collection of several stories. Vishnu Sharma has done a good job of giving moral life lessons by showcasing the activity of animals. I enjoy the book because it has many stories I love and cherish.

My mother bought this book for me as my birthday present. When I first read this book, it captured my attention instantly. Panchatantra has a unique narration which makes it my favourite book. It teaches us how humble, loving, and caring people always succeed. The book also showcases how bad qualities like cunningness, jealousy, anger and cheating can get you into trouble.

Panchatantra is a narrative of several animal characters in various stories, including a lion named Pingalaka, two bulls named Karnataka and Sanjivaka, a fox named Damanaka, deer named Chars, and so many others. These animals showcase human behaviour that we come across in our daily life.

Even though the book has a variety of stories, the story of The Crab and The Stork is close to my heart. It teaches us about presence of mind and intelligence. The story begins with a stork that was searching for food but could not find any as he was old. Finally, he plans to catch a fish to eat. He goes to a pond and pretends to be sad and depressed. Seeing him gloomy, a fish and a crab ask him why he is upset. The stork makes up a story that humans were going to inhabit the pond to grow crops. They are convinced by this story and are worried about how to stop this. The stork takes all the fish, frogs and other marine animals out of the pond, and slyly uses them for his meal. Finally, it is the turn of the crab to go with the stork, but the crab is aware that his friends are dead. So, the crab uses his intelligence, grabs the stork’s neck, and kills him to save himself.

Panchatantra stories like this one have taught me to think before taking any action. The book educates me on optimism and how to see the brightness at the end of the tunnel. It has made me realise the value of being good to all in any situation.

Essay on my favourite book

Essay on my favourite book 20 Models

Last updated Friday , 15-03-2024 on 11:31 am

Essay on my favourite book, If you are asked to write an essay about your favorite book, you will feel very happy, because of the ease of this article.

You can begin by describing the book you like, by talking about its content. Then you talk about the reasons that made you love this book. You can mention in detail what the book is talking about.

And you must talk about your love of reading in general, remember the first time you read, and what was the name of the first book you read.

In the end, you can give advice to those who like reading, and advise them on a number of books that you think are useful to them.

Essay on my favourite book

For me, I like to read detective stories that tell of serial crimes and that are solved gradually and intelligently.

I loved this kind of book when my dad gave me my first detective story for my sixth birthday.

It was a simple and uncomplicated story but I loved it, so I started buying the series book after book. My room has become full of stories and every day I read a lot of them and I can’t get enough of them even if I read them several times.

Each of us has a specific type of book that he prefers to read, and his love for this type is due to things related to him and not others.

A person may love to read scary horror books, despite their cruelty, but he does not hesitate to read them. People’s love of horror is due to their love of intense excitement and their strong curiosity.

As for people who are characterized by gentle and loving characters, we find that they prefer reading romance stories.

My favorite book is the picture book about animals. I like to know the nature of each animal in terms of the environment in which it lives and in terms of food. I like to read strange information about animals that a large number of people do not know.

And of course, I read about rare animals in order to know the remaining numbers of them and how to preserve the existing ones. I have seen thousands of animals among the pages of books, and learned a lot of interesting information about them.

Because of this beautiful hobby, I was able to learn general information about many things in life.Nowadays, I have moved from reading books about animals to reading books about planets and space. Space has become like magic to me. Every time I learn about one of its secrets, another one is waiting for me.

I loved the bush when I read the famous story about the family whose ship sank in the sea, and unfortunately only the father, mother and baby survived the ship’s passengers.

After they were tossed on the shore of an uninhabited island, the father built a wooden house on top of the trees to get away from predators.

But they were attacked by a wild tiger that could climb trees, and killed the father and the mother, but the father managed to put the baby in a tightly closed wooden box, which prevented the tiger from reaching it.

On the next day, the huge female gorilla who had lost her child due to the same tiger came. She heard the child’s screaming inside the box. She did not leave him and walk away, but she took him out and took him with her to the herd of gorillas.

The adult gorillas refused to raise the human child among their children, but the mother gorilla insisted on adopting him and defended him with all her might.

Indeed, the child has grown up among the herd of gorillas, has learned their skills, and is now walking on all fours just like them.

One day, he found some people exploring the island with a nice girl, which made him get close to her and become her close friend, but those who were with her attacked the gorillas and killed their leader and captured the rest of the herd.

In the end, the jungle man was able to free his family from the gorillas and return them to their homeland in peace, and refused to leave the island because of his love of living with gorillas and his lack of acceptance of humans and their hostile actions towards animals.

My favourite book paragraph

I’ve loved sea creatures since I’ve been going with my dad on fishing trips. I’ve seen different types of fish, but would have liked to see more.

I have been able to see a number of other marine organisms of different shapes and sizes, by reading books specialized in marine organisms.

I have read about whales of all kinds. She learned about the types of sharks, their nature, and how they hunt their prey.

I have learned through reading books of all kinds that living things have a special nature, which we must know before we approach them.

One of the most important of these traits is the nature of predation, which is essential for organisms, especially at the time of hunger and danger.

My favourite book essay in English

I am a person who loves to read and therefore I own many types of books, but the most preferred type is books that talk about different peoples and different cultures.

From these books I learned about cultures that I never imagined existed. There are several primitive peoples living on the islands and relying on fishing, some of them catch fish using primitive traps or catch them with their hands.

On these islands, children learn to swim and scuba dive at a very young age, so that they can fetch their own food.

This story is not the only story that talks about people and their strangeness, but there are thousands of amazing stories, which will not be easy to identify and live in their details except through books of various kinds.

Therefore, children must learn to read from a young age, so that they acquire skills and learn about other cultures, so what they know will benefit them in forming their personalities.

My favourite hobby essay

My favorite hobby is horse riding. I started this hobby when I was five years old. And it all started when I went to visit my grandfather’s horse farm.

My grandfather owns a large number of trained horses which he uses in international and local races. My grandfather told me that the whole family rides horses at a young age, and that I should learn like them.

At first I was afraid of the horse because of its small size and my small size, and I was afraid of falling from the top of the horse, but with time I got used to the horses and became my best friend. When the horse sees me from afar, it rushes to take the sugar and welcomes me.

I hope to become a distinguished knight in the future and to participate in international competitions, and I hope to own several horses of my own.

I learned how to handle a horse and how to train it from my grandfather.I will not stop this hobby because it is a fun hobby and makes me very proud.

My favorite book paragraph

My favorite book is a science book about piranha. It is a fish with a different nature from the rest of the fish in the world. It lives in the Amazon River, but has teeth as sharp as a saw.

If a tourist makes a mistake and gets into the water, he is attacked by a swarm of piranha, stripping his bones of meat and leaving him an empty skeleton.

The same is true for the animals and birds that go into the water in the places where the piranha fish are.But there are some people who may not know the importance of reading.

We must alert them to its great importance because it is not just a hobby that wastes time, or just a summer activity that we do to entertain ourselves. But reading can save a person’s life.

When he reads about a wild animal like a piranha, he will know where it lives and what its danger is, and therefore he will warn before going into the water with it, which will save his life. As for the ignorant person, he will go down to the water without any thought, which will expose him to attack.

My favourite story book essay

When I was in the early stages of my life I learned to read and write well, which encouraged my mother to buy me some comics.

I read a special story in my childhood which made it stick in my mind and become my favorite story. This story is the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This story was very popular and the story was made in several successful films.

It talks about a king and queen who have a girl with skin as white as snow, so the queen named her Snow White.

But after a while the queen dies and the king marries an evil witch.

The evil witch is chasing after the girl with the aim of killing her, because of her jealousy of the girl’s beauty, she sends after her a hunter to kill her.

But the hunter takes pity on the girl and refuses to kill her, but tells her to enter the forest and not return to the palace.

He tells her to go into the forest and not go back to the palace

Indeed, the little girl goes to the forest to enter the house of the seven dwarfs, and while she is there, she eats their food and sleeps on their beds. And when they come back they love her and ask her to live with them.

Indeed, she continues to live with them until the witch reaches her and poisons her with a poisoned piece of apple. In the end, the dwarves put the dead princess in a secluded place and go to visit her on a daily basis.

But the surprise happens when a prince passes by chance and falls in love with the princess. Then he moves her, and a piece of apple comes out of her throat, and he marries her amid celebrations of the dwarves.

My favorite book essay in English

I read a children’s book when I was young and loved it so much that it became my favorite book. The book was in my uncle’s library, and what caught my eye was the cover. The wrapper had a little wooden baby with a long, thin nose.

I asked my uncle about the story of the wooden baby, and he gave me the book to read.

The story was about an old man who works in carpentry, but is lonely because he has no children. And one day he decided to make a wooden kid and he wished, to talk to him.

Indeed, he sculpted the child and slept wishing he would wake up to find him moving and talking.

The child moved and the man was very happy.

The child happily spent several years with the carpenter, but the child began to lie causing his nose to grow longer after each lie. The carpenter kept trying to convince the child to stop lying, but he failed.

One day, the child met a witch who told him that if he stopped lying, he would turn into a real child.

Indeed, he stopped lying and turned into a real child.

Essay on my favourite book in 150 words

The kind that I like are scientific encyclopedias that provide a large amount of scientific and cultural information.

There are several types of these encyclopedias, such as those that talk about space. I used to go to the school library and found several encyclopedias describing the space in a detailed way.

I have read about planets and their shapes and everything related to them. I read about the moon and learned important information about it. And of course I learned about the sun and the stars.

Among the encyclopedias that I have read and have won my admiration are those that talk about dinosaurs.

In this encyclopedia I saw colorful pictures of all kinds of dinosaurs and under each picture the name was written.

These dinosaurs lived on Earth before humans descended on it. I got to know their types, some of which feed on herbs. There is a type of dinosaur that feeds on meat and is one of the most dangerous species. As for flying dinosaurs, they are like birds and have wings, and for food they hunt small animals in size.

Favourite book essay

Each of us has a certain type of book that he prefers to read more than others, and this type may be related to study or just entertainment.

As for me, I prefer to read horror stories that talk about ghosts. I got hooked on this type of book when my dad bought me a book with the story of the ghost hunters.

The book was about a group of people who believed in ghosts, which made them found a company to catch pesky ghosts.

Indeed, people began to flock to the company, which enabled them to catch several types of ghosts.

The funny thing about the story is that they got to know five evil ghosts and were finding it very difficult to catch them.

But fortunately for them, they found a ghost who is friendly and does not like to do evil towards humans. So they befriended him and made a pact with him to help them catch evil ghosts.

And this is what happened, where he managed to deceive and imprison them until the ghost hunters came and took them to the prison designated for evil ghosts, which attack humans and cause them to fear and force them to leave their homes.

My favourite book topic

My favorite book is the type that talks about history. I like to learn about people’s history. I started reading history when I found a book on the history of ancient Egypt.

In this book I got acquainted with the great kings of each ruling family. I read about mummification and its secrets, which baffled the world so far.

And of course, I read about the pyramids and the engineering secrets that scientists discovered by examining the pyramids.

I also read about pharaonic temples of all kinds, which are characterized by a large number of secrets that scientists have not solved despite modern technology.

Because of my love for this type of interesting books, I decided to go on a tour of all the countries I read about and their valuable effects.

I will definitely start traveling to Egypt, so that I can see all the famous monuments that amazed me. My trip to Egypt will include several places, including Luxor and Aswan. I must go to visit Giza, where there are the three pyramids and the Sphinx.

My favourite book essay 250 words

Because of my love for the game of chess, I buy a large number of books that talk about this game. Through books, I learned a lot about this game and its origins. In the books I got to know the best players in the world, and I knew how many matches they had won.

Through the book, I knew that the best chess player in the world was Kasparov, who had never lost a chess match in his life.

But in the end it was defeated after several attempts by artificial intelligence engineers. They have developed a computer that plays chess professionally.

Indeed, the computer was able to defeat the world champion after he did a simple trick that made him confused and lost.

This movement made by the computer to deceive the player was entered by the programmer, who was able to program the machine with an artificial intelligence system that makes it behave in certain situations like humans and not like a machine.

This is what drew my attention to this match and made me talk about it in front of you today. And this kind of new technological science will conquer the world in the next few years, completely changing the shape of the world.

And people wonder, will technological development be in the interest of humans, or will it cause them to be eliminated? This is what we will know from experience, not assumption.

For me my favorite book is the one with crime mysteries. I love the detective series who tracks down crime leads and eventually solves the mystery.

This type of book is full of suspense and fun, which increases the secretion of adrenaline in the body and makes you feel happy.

Especially if the crimes are dangerous and strange, such as using magic to complete them or using supernatural powers.

There are also crimes committed by a serial killer, which gives her more suspense, as she tries to find out what the victims have in common until the case is solved and the next victim is rescued.

My favorite book is Panchatantra. It is written by Vishnu Sharma. The book contains a collection of many stories. The writer has tried to give the moral of life by the activity of animals. I am very fond of reading storybooks and this book provided me with different types of stories.

The story of stork and crab shows the presence of the mind and intelligence of the crab. The stork could not search for his food when he became old and therefore had made a plan. He stood sad and depressed near the pond and when fish and crab asked the reason for his sadness, he made a fake story that the pond will be inhabited by people to grow crops. All the fishes, frogs, and crabs were convinced by his story. Later when it was the chance of crab to be killed and eaten by the stork, the situation was reversed. Crab used his intelligence and could guess the real motive of the stork. He escaped by killing the stork.

The book contains several stories like Monkey and crocodile, Elephant and mice, loyal mongoose, etc. There are many stories in the book and they focus on the qualities like friendship, courage, intelligence, presence of mind, and unity.

The book Panchatantra is one of my favorite storybooks. I was very happy after reading this book for the first time. The stories are fascinating as well as teach us some morals of life.

Essay 2 (400 Words) – My Favourite Book: Mahabharata

There are hundreds of books we come through while reading. Every book provides us with knowledge and interesting facts. There are some books which inspire us and we feel it to be the best book we have ever read.

Elucidation of My Favourite Book

My favorite book is Mahabharata. I did not know anything about this epic before I read the book. I received this book as my birthday gift from my grandparents. At first, when I opened the book, it appeared to be a little boring. I kept the book as it is in my drawer. Later when the serial Mahabharata was casted on television, I started getting interested in the story. Since it was casted a little on one day and I wanted to know about the whole story soon. Therefore I started reading the book.

Mahabharata is one of the major epics of Hindus in Sanskrit. It has been written by Maharishi Ved Vyas. The epic contains 10000 shlokas. The main story depicted by this epic is based on the battle between Pandavas and Kauravas for getting the throne of Hastinapur. The battle was fought in Kurukshetra.

Story in Brief

The book mainly focuses on the story of Kauravas and Pandavas. Dhritarashtra and Pandu were two brothers. Since Dhritarashtra was blind so Pandu became the ruler. Duryodhana was the eldest of hundred sons (Kaurwas) of Dhritarashtra and Yudhistir, Bheem, Arjuna, Nakul, and Sehdev were five sons of Pandu. Duryodhana invited Pandavas to play the game with him. The Pandavas accepted the offer of their cousin’s brother and came to play. They lost the game and also Draupadi called “Panchali”.

As a result, they have to spend 13 years of exile period. After they completed the period of exile, they returned to Indraprastha. Duryodhana refused to hand over Hastinapur to Pandavas. This led them to fight the battle for justice and dharma. Later the Pandavas won the battle by defeating Kauravas.

Bhagavad Gita – Arjun was not ready to fight the battle against his close relatives. The Enlightenment and knowledge which Lord Krishna imparted during the battle to Arjun came to be known as Bhagavad Gita. It is the storehouse of knowledge. It is part of the Great Epic Mahabharata.

It consists of 18 chapters consisting of 700 shlokas. It teaches us spiritual lessons along with important lessons of life.

Lord Krishna says that it is the body only that dies not the soul. The soul leaves one body and occupies a new body. It has been explained in Gita that one should be hard working without thinking of the results. There is no substitute for hard work. The life of man is full of struggles and men should face all these with a firm determination.

I love the story of Mahabharata. This book helps us in solving the problems of our life. In the story of Mahabharata, every character has an important role and we can learn different things from their life.

Essay 3 (500 – 600 Words) – My Favourite Book: Ramayana

Reading books is a good habit. It inculcates knowledge and moral values in us. Every one of us should have a good reading habit. Books are like our companions. Books are the storehouse of knowledge and we can obtain the knowledge to develop a passion for reading us.

I have read many books. I am very fond of reading novels and storybooks. My favorite book is Ramayana. It is the greatest Epic after Mahabharata written by Rishi Valmiki. It is the holy book of Hindus.

Story of Ramayana

The great epic Ramayana illustrates the story of Lord Rama. He was the son of Ayodhya King Dasharatha. King Dasharatha had four sons from his three wives namely Ram, Lakshman, Bharata, Shatrughan. There was a lot of love and affection between the brothers.

All four of them left Ayodhya the first time to gain an education. They completed their education and returned to Ayodhya. Further, they all were married. Lord Ram was married to Sita. Lord Ram has to leave his family and go to exile for a period of 14 years, following the orders of his mother Kaikeyi. He left to spend his exile period with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman.

In the jungle, Sita was kidnapped by the Demon King Ravana. Lord Ram defeated Ravana and rescued his wife back to Ayodhya. Then only Ram was conferred as King of Ayodhya. He saved the lives of many saints by punishing the evil characters. He was the ideal king for his people of kingdom Ayodhya. He took care of his people and sometimes went into the public by changing his identity to know the real scenario. He would hear to everybody in his kingdom and did justice.

Lesson from the Life of Different Characters of Ramayana

  • Lord Ram – He was an ideal son for his father, mother, and country, ideal husband for his wife Sita, an Ideal brother, and Ideal king for the public of his kingdom.
  • Lakshman – He was an Ideal brother and took care of his elder brother Ram. All of the brothers had a lot of love and affection for each other.
  • Bharata – He was an ideal brother. It has been stated that when Lord Ram went to exile for 14 years, Bharata has kept the slippers of his elder brother on the throne and did not accept the throne as a king. He also had sacrificed the pleasures of the palace and resided in a small hut. These things represent the respect and love of a brother.
  • Sita – Lord Ram was married to Sita. She was an ideal wife. She went along with Lord Ram for the exile period. She stated that – How could a wife enjoy all pleasures of life when the husband has to go for exile period? She always stood with her husband in good or bad times of life.
  • Shabri – Her character is also an important character as a great Devotee of Ram. She spread the flowers and selected berries daily to welcome Lord Ram and finally her wish was fulfilled. In the same way, we should not lose hope till the end and try our best.
  • All other characters were also great like Hanuman the greatest devotee of Lord Ram, all the mothers of Lord Ram, wife of all four brothers, Jatayu, etc.

Moral Derived after Reading the Book

  • We must be brave and courageous in our life with a high spirit.
  • Life has both phases i.e. happiness and grief. We must be readily accepting both phases of life.
  • This epic teaches us to respect our elders and teachers. We should listen and follow what they say.
  • We learn that evil or wrong deeds never give a better result. We should use our energy in a positive direction to achieve success. As the demon Ravana took away Maa Sita by betrayal, therefore, was punished. Instead of being a person with intellect, he did not use his mind and energy in a positive direction.

Ramayana is an epic with immense knowledge and principles of life. This book can be found in every house. I love reading this book again and again. People who do not have this book must bring and read the book as it is filled with spiritual and moral lessons.

My Favourite Book Essay for Class 4 in English

This article is a Sample Essay on My Favourite Book Essay for Class 4 in English for excellent marks. This is a sample essay on the I Like the most in English.

I am fond of reading books and I have read many books on different subjects but my favourite book is “Arabian Nights”. It is the book I like the most. This book contains many stories. It is said all of them were related to King Shahriyar and a beautiful princess.

The stories in the book are really wonderful. In it we read about Jinns, who could travel thousand of miles in an hour. They could build big palaces in a night, and destroy them in a no time. Out of all stories described in the book, I like two the most which are Aladdin and his wonderful lamp and Ali Baba and Torty Thieves.

Aladdin found a wonderful lamp in a cave by chance. When he rubbed the lamp, a Jinn appeared from it. The Jinn served Aladdin as his slave and he became rich. The Jinn gave him all that he desired. Ali Baba was a poor man. He found a cave in which some robbers had kept all the money that they had stolen. Ali Baba found the cave and discovered the magic words by which the door of the cave could open. He became very rich after finding the wealth from that cave.

Hence, it is strongly advocated that you choose a general book that is very balanced and has no clash of opinions of any kind. As you do so, you can also talk about the importance of books.

In the body, you must explain what the book is about and how it is relevant to you and your personal choices. As a writer, you need to be elaborate and provide justification for your liking without discussing the contents of the book. You should also try to explain the reasonability of the book to others. “My Favourite Book” Essay

Books are very important in life as they provide us with knowledge and educate us. My favourite book is, “ Wings of Fire ” by Dr APJ Abdul Kalam . The book is the autobiography of the 11th President of India who is also known as the Missile Man, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. The book has been published in 13 languages and is one of the best autobiographical books I have read so far.

APJ Abdul Kalam was a Tamilian boy who was born into a poverty-stricken family and the book explains how he rose from the economically backward strata of society to the most esteemed position in the Indian Government. Kalam’s autobiography has been named, “Wings of Fire” because he was the man behind ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology in India. The book begins with his childhood and takes the readers for a highly motivational ride through the inspirational life of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. Wings of Fire was published in 1999 by the Universities Press and co-authored by Arun Tiwari. It also focuses on India’s sustainability and independence in the world of Technology.

My Parents Essay for Students and Children in English

Wings of Fire happens to be my favourite because it is extremely inspirational. The life of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam happens to be a game changer for India in terms of science and technology. Further, he was a simple man and his humility and simplicity are appreciated by nearly everyone in the world. Reading about him has been intensely motivating and the book presents the reality of life and how hard work can overcome every obstacle in life. The experience of reading “Wings of Fire” was exactly like Rene Descartes describes, “The reading of all good books is like a conversation with the finest minds of past centuries”.

I love reading books. I probably grew the habit of reading at a very young age. I think so because I cannot remember the name of my first read book. I spend most of my free time reading books. Even though fiction is my favourite genre, but I like reading some other genres of the book as well, like fantasy and horror.

I have a few books that I love reading often. My favourite book is ‘Little Women’ written by an American author named Louisa May Alcott in 1968. The story of Little Women revolves around the lives of the four March sisters. Through the story, we get to witness their transition from childhood to womanhood.

This novel is said to perfectly express the situations of the era that the story was set in through the elegant writing style of the author. To me, Little Women is and always will be a very inspirational and powerful book.

English Summary

My Favourite Book Essay in English

Whenever I get time, I read some good books. Generally, I like to read about the lives of great men. We learn many useful things from the lives of great men. The lives of such great men are helpful in guiding us along right path.

Our libraries are full of biographies and autobiographies of great men. But of all the autobiographies I like the autobiography of the Mahatma the most. The name of the book is ‘My Experiments with Truth.

The book was presented to me by my sister on my birthday. I was very happy to receive this book. The book is so interesting that I like to read it again and again.

.Our libraries are full of biographies and autobiographies of great men. But of all the autobiographies I like the autobiography of the Mahatma the most. The name of the book is ‘My Experiments with Truth. The book was presented to me by my sister on my birthday. I was very happy to receive this book. The book is so interesting that I like to read it again and again.

My Experiments with Truth’ brings before us a true picture of Gandhiji’s life. The book tells us that right from his childhood Gandhiji appreciated the virtues of truth and non-violence.

After passing the matriculation examination, Gandhiji went to England for higher studies. He returned to India as a barrister. He started legal practice in Bombay. He proved a failure as a barrister, for he refused to plead false cases.

The book tells us about Gandhiji’s work in South Africa. Gandhiji went to plead the case of a rich merchant. Gandhiji was distressed at the pathetic condition of the Indians living in South Africa.

They were ill-treated by the white people. Gandhiji decided to fight for the rights of the Indians He launched a Satyagraha against the discriminatory treatment met out to the Indians. At long last, his movement turned successful.

After the successful conduct of the agitation in South Africa, Gandhiji returned to India in 1915. This agitation had generated in Gandhiji a sense of confidence. Now he decided to launch a movement in India to secure freedom for the country from the British oppressors.

So he devoted himself to the noble cause of making the country free. In 1921 he started the famous Non-cooperation Movement’ against the British Government. This Movement was based on non-violence. However, he had to call it off because of the eruption of violence in some parts of the country.

Gandhiji spent many years in jail. In 1942 he started the famous “Quit India Movement. He was determined not to rest contented till India got freedom. Nothing could chill his spirits and nothing could make him deviate from his path. The British Government was compelled to set India free.

Gandhi’s autobiography is full of teachings for us. The account of his like in South Africa is very touching. His movement there was based on non-violence, fearlessness and love. His success proved that non-violence was more powerful than violence.

Though the British rulers perpetrated cruel des on the volunteers of the movement in India and threw them into the jails yet Gandhiji bore no ill-will against the British people. He taught us to hate evil and not the evil-doer.

Gandhiji’s My Experiments with Truth’ has been one of the most popular books of the world. It has been translated in most of the languages of the world. It has proved to be one of the best-sellers in modern times. This book has caught the imagination of the freedom loving people everywhere in the world.

The experts: librarians on 20 easy, enjoyable ways to read more brilliant books

Do you love reading – but all too often find yourself just scrolling through your phone or watching TV? Here is how to get lost in literature again

I n the age of digital distractions, it is easy to struggle to find the time and headspace to get lost in literature. How can you get back into the habit? Librarians share the best ways to rediscover reading, make it a regular habit – and their tips for the most unputdownable books.

1. Don’t beat yourself up if you haven’t read in years

“A whole combination of things have come together in an unfortunate way to make it harder for people to read,” says Nancy Pearl, who is referred to as “ America’s librarian ” and lives in Seattle, where she worked for almost 40 years in public libraries. “The state of the world makes it very hard to read, because there is so much to worry about. People don’t have the energy to concentrate on reading as we used to.”

2. Listen to a book rather than ‘read’

“The thing about reading is that it is a choice that you make,” says Pearl. “You can read or you can go out in the garden and get rid of some weeds or watch the television. If you have consistently not found pleasure in reading, then you’re not going to choose reading, because it involves sitting down doing one thing at a time – except if you’re listening to audiobooks.

“I was a very late adopter of audiobooks. Now I would much rather listen to a book than sit down and read a book because I can do it while I’m walking.”

“Listening to an audiobook is reading,” says Louise Morrish, a librarian turned novelist who has worked at all kinds of libraries, including a haunted one, and now works at a secondary school in Hampshire. “There have been scientific studies where they’ve stuck sensors on to people’s heads, and the areas of the brain that are lighting up and connecting are the same when you’re listening to a story as when you’re reading it yourself.”

3. Join a library

“Your local library is a really good source,” says Morrish. “The librarians there are brilliant at helping you find books and it is free: you can take a punt on something and won’t have wasted money.”

“I always suggest going to the library or bookstore and talking about what you’re looking for,” says Pearl. “Say: ‘I just read this book, I want another book just like it.’”

There is so much more than just books in libraries. Danny Middleton works at Manchester Central Library , which has to be the coolest public library in Britain (and officially the busiest, with 4,200 visitors a day), offering murder mystery nights, silent discos and drag bingo. Middleton is in charge of reader development, which involves “encouraging people to come through the doors and discover what magic is inside”, he says. “Once we get them in the library, then it’s bam! You can’t go out until you’ve joined.”

4. Widen your search

“Think about books that you have liked in the past,” says Morrish. “Searching on the internet for ‘books like …’ or ‘books written like …’ is always a good place to start. Goodreads is incredible. It has lists and lists of books: novels, short stories, thrillers. There are so many bespoke lists on there so you can find books that you fancy. A new website – shepherd.com – collates books in terms of your interests. You can type in, ‘I want to read books about women who have overcome adversity,’ and you’ll have people on there who have curated lists of books with that as the subject matter.”

Morrish also recommends BookTok and following authors and book bloggers on social media, which she says is a “fantastic corner of the internet to hang out”. Joining a local book club “is a really good way of meeting people who love books”, Morrish says.

5. Work out what you are drawn to in books

For some readers this will be characters, for others it will be a sense of place, but for most it is all about the plot, says Pearl. “One book that satisfies all three of those needs is Larry McMurtry ’s Pulitzer prize-winning Lonesome Dove,” says Pearl. “It is the story of two Texas Rangers after the [American] civil war, taking a herd of cattle across the United States to be slaughtered. You will never forget the experience of meeting those two characters. And for those who are plot people, oh my gosh, the story of that cattle drive, and what happens on the way, that keeps the pages turning.”

Illustration of a man putting birthday candles in a book

6. Create a positive reading routine

“My big life hack is to read every single day,” says Morrish. “I read every night without fail, even if it’s just for five minutes or a page. You get through a book that way. You don’t lose your place or forget what is going on in the story. It becomes a habit.” If you are too tired at night, “you could create a routine where you read when you commute or listen to an audiobook when you walk the dog”, Morrish suggests. Setting a reading target can be a good incentive: “Say to yourself: ‘This month I’m going to try to read two books a week.’ And if you reach that target, give yourself a treat,”.

7. Read what you love

Finding the right thing to get back into reading depends entirely on your preferences, says Middleton, who doesn’t “do grisly”. But for many people, crime and thrillers are very accessible, with Richard Osman, James Patterson, Ann Cleeves and Lee Child particularly hot in Manchester, Middleton says. “Don’t be put off reading things by worrying about what other people might think,” says Ian Cooke, head of contemporary British and Irish collections at the British Library in London. “Loads of people love reading romance and it’s a really strong, innovative genre. I love reading comics, which some people think isn’t ‘proper reading’; it’s a different type of literacy.”

8. Be open minded

“Experiment with trying something new,” says Cooke, which you can do easily through public libraries. “If you don’t like something, take it back, borrow something else.” He gives poetry as an example, which he got into eight years ago after previously being slightly scared by it: “It’s like music; it’s people talking about their experiences in very personal ways.” Charlotte Wetton is a current favourite poet of Cooke’s. “Try to read as widely as you can because your tastes may have changed if you’ve had a gap,” says Morrish. “You may have once loved vampire books but now you’ve moved on to something else.”

9. Consider nonfiction

If you struggle to get into a story, head to the non-fiction aisle, says Morrish. “I’m very interested in the gut microbiome at the moment so am finding books on that. If you watch a lot of true crime on television, there are loads of books out there that are based on true crime cases. Biographies and memoirs are very readable, too.” Literary prizes can offer inspiration: “The Women’s prize have their inaugural prize for non-fiction this year and there is the Walter Scott prize for historical fiction,” says Morrish. “Reading comes in all forms – magazines, catalogues, books, short story collections, manuals – it doesn’t have to be a novel.”

10. Pick up a Quick Read

Middleton suggests the Quick Reads series, which are short and accessible versions of novels and non-fiction. “Massive authors contribute page-turning thrillers, comedy or holiday read romances. They are written in very accessible English, with short, snappy chapters, and are only about 150 to 200 pages.”

An illustration of a dog bringing a woman a book

11. Remove any distractions

When reading, “turn your phone off or put it in a different room”, says Morrish. “It is the biggest distraction possible. For children particularly, if they get a notification on their phone, then they’re off and they don’t get back to the book.”

12. Surround yourself with books

“Leave books lying around your home that look enticing,” says Mariesa Dulak, a librarian at a primary school in Ealing, west London and a children’s author . This is a helpful technique to encourage yourself and family members to read more: “If you let children see you reaching for a book rather than your phone, then it is going to make them want to read, too.” This can also be replicated in the workplace says Middleton: “If you have books in the staff room, when you’re sat having a brew, the books will be staring at you and you might be tempted to pick one up.”

13. It is never too early to establish good reading habits

Start reading to kids as soon as possible, says Dulak. “If you are taking your baby out with the buggy, in the same way that you might pack a snack, make sure you’ve got a board book in there which they can interact with. Hearing you read the words out loud to them is such an important part of learning language: there is nothing that a child likes more than their parent’s voice.”

14. Read aloud

“Somehow we stop reading to kids when they learn to read themselves,” says Pearl. “One of the best things to do is to set aside a part of the evening for a family read, which can be all of you sitting around reading, not having your phone handy. I do think reading out loud through the teen years is a great way to share that experience with your children.” Cooke recommends attending or tuning in online to an author reading, such as through the library Living Knowledge network.

15. Keep a reading diary

“Write down what you’re reading, who wrote it, who published it and what you thought of it,” says Cooke. “So over time, you can go back, see what you’ve read and what you’ve liked. It doesn’t have to be very involved, just a couple of sentences to jog your memory.”

An illustration of a man holding a book

16. Ebook or print?

“Print,” says Middleton. “I’m old school, I like holding it in my hands and turning the page. I like an audiobook when I’m doing the ironing, though.” Pearl adds: “I read Susie Boyt’s book Loved and Missed recently and that was a book that I really needed to hold to encounter the words and the characters myself.” Dulak says: “I would say that a Kindle has its place but only when I’m on holiday,”

Cooke is an ebook enthusiast: “What’s really exciting about digital is it can allow new ways to tell stories and engage people, such as books that include the reader making a choice as they go through or [a book] that reacts to the reader’s environment.” He recommends Breathe by Kate Pullinger , a ghost story that is designed to be read on your phone and uses data about you to create a personal experience of the book based on your circumstances.

17. Avoid fines

The best way to do this, says Dulak, is to “keep your books visible – not under the bed – and in the same place so you always know where they are”. “Don’t fear the fine,” says Cooke. “Find out what your library’s policy is, how to renew online, and set a calendar alert.”

18. For the perfect unputdownable holiday read, try …

Pearl: “What I would look for is a good saga or a really good fantasy novel. Rosamunde Pilcher was a great holiday book writer.”

Morrish: “For people who don’t read regularly, I would recommend Tahereh Mafi , a crossover author who writes adult and YA. Her writing style is almost like a text message: short, sharp chapters, written in stream of consciousness.”

Middleton: “The Tales of the City books by Armistead Maupin. I’m halfway through the new one – it’s brilliant.”

Cooke: “ 80 Days by Inkle Studios , an online retelling of the classic in which you help Phileas Fogg around the world and get drawn into your own adventures too.”

Dulak: “The Skandar series by AF Steadman is good for kids because it’s got bloodthirsty unicorns and Harry Potter-esque magic but with a more contemporary twist. For older readers, Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin, a beautifully written page-turner about love, loss and gaming.”

19. Know when to give up

The librarians agree on the 50-page rule. “Read to the bottom of page 50,” says Pearl. “If you’re enjoying it, of course go on. If you just can’t slog through it, then stop reading. If all you care about is, did they get the killer?, then turn to the last page.” She adds: “As my 50s came and went, I realised that you don’t have enough time left to read all the books that you want to read. So if you’re 51 and up, subtract your age from 100 and that number, which gets smaller every year, is the number of pages you should read before you can guiltlessly give up on a book. When you turn 100, the ultimate reward is that you can judge a book by its cover.”

20. Read a book and reap the rewards

“If you take 10 minutes a day to sink into a book, newspaper or read anything, it is very good for your mental health,” says Middleton. “There is lots of medical evidence of that being the case. Reading a book for 10 minutes is better for you than listening to your favourite record.”

Morrish makes a final impassioned plea: “It has been scientifically proven that reading increases your powers of empathy, social skills and ability to relate to other people. It relaxes you, it lowers your cortisol levels and blood pressure. It increases your vocabulary, your knowledge, creativity and imagination. If you read for pleasure, your grades will be better. To read from a book gives you time off the screen, which is hugely beneficial for your mental health.”
