For instance, these days, many people live in different countries or go travelling in different countries. Cell phones and the internet mean that parents can easily keep in touch with their children who are on holiday and people who immigrate to live abroad can easily communicate with their loved ones when needed. In addition to this, the internet means that people also interact with strangers and increase their knowledge of other cultures because through such things as Facebook, people connect to all sorts of people around the world, becoming friends and also discussing and exchanging knowledge.

The use of mobile phones has an impact on many people in both bystanders and those who are talking through their mobile phones. With the increase in the dependence of many cell phone users on their mobile phones, the conversion is becoming an issue for many people in public places. Research has been undertaken to show the effects that conversations on cell phones affects the driving. There is no research that has been done to show the distraction this has in public places. This paper focused on the effects of a one-sided conversation against two-sided conversation with mobile phone users. It is evident that those people who listen to a one-sided conversation are more distracted than those who hear a two-sided conversation. Cell phones are relied upon for personal communication. Recent research shows that more people are relying on their mobile phones. People have felt that they are emotionally attached to their phones that they are anxious when they are without their cell phones. With the integration of more features to smart hones, it is making cell phone users feel they cannot live without their cell phones. There are personalized features like navigation capabilities, personal organizers and communication capabilities that have made cell phone users feel attached to their cell phones. With these features, most ell phone users feel they have a personal relationship with their mobile phones. Most people have their cell phones being on most of the time. A good percentage of people feel that they should answer their cell phones even if it will interrupt a meeting or an important event. The nature of the conversation that takes place by the cell phone user with the bystanders is what this paper is based on. With this phenomenon of mobile use in public places, it is now becoming evident that more people who are close to the people using mobile phones will be affected. Cell phone use has negative effects on the cognition of someone. There is a need to have a study to study of the effects of one-sided conversations for bystanders. This is so for people who are using their mobile phones while they are in public places. Well controlled research has indicated hat people who overheard one-sided conversations were more likely to be distracted than those who are distracted by two-sided conversations. The use of mobile phones in public places brings a picture of one-sided conversations for those who are standing near the cell phone users. This scenario is common for cell phone users who make conversations in public places. In public communication with the use of cell phones, it is common to have intrusion of cell phone and the bystanders find themselves listening to the conversations than to two-sided communication. The annoyance to the people who hear one-sided conversation is consistent for many users. This is a common scenario that is seen by many users in public places. This is common with the use of cell phones in public places. This can be attributed to the fact that there is no distinction by users of private and public places. This is common because people who use mobile phones in public places usually have private conversations with these phones. It is not common to see people use cell phones in public places to discuss business. Bystanders who get exposed to these private and personal conversations do not have control over the level of interactions and conversations with these cell phone users. This is the reason why they feel annoyed with cell phone users in public places. It has been found out that bystanders who find themselves in situations where they are not free to leave, for example, when waiting for public transport, find the use of cell phones in public places annoying and frustrating. It has also been found out that the lack of control of the conversations is the reason why the bystanders feel annoyed and frustrated with the use of cell phones in public places. Bystanders who overheard a one-sided conversation tend to remember more about what is being discussed than that of two-sided communication. This means that they remembered more words in conversations in single-sided communication than the ones in two-sided communication. This means that there is a tendency to have more distractions in one-sided communication than two-sided communication. Bystanders in public places who listen to cell phone conversations are likely to have correct guesses of what is being discussed in the conversation. This shows that there is a lot of concentration on the subject that is being talked about for the bystanders. This is a cause for distraction and annoyance that the people in public places using their cell phones go through. It is important to understand the causes of the distraction that is being received by cell phone users. People tend to concentrate on the conversations which are single-sided as they try to pierce the pieces together to make something out of the conversation. People who listen to cell phone conversations in public places are found to be confident in what is being discussed in phone conversations. People in public places tend to concentrate on people who use their cell phones. This is a point of concern as people tend to get distracted by these conversations. The use of cell phones has increased connectivity and reachability to many people. The way people interaction is changing because of the use of mobile phones. It is accessible, and easy to use and increases the connectivity for many people who have hitherto been unconnected. There is a concern about the use of mobile phones in public places. The use of mobile phones in public places is becoming a common phenomenon. With this connectivity and the simplicity of communication, the use of mobile phones is bringing a lot of tensions with strangers. This is so because of the fact that strangers get information about the conversations that take place with those talking with their mobile phones in public places. Upon the introduction of cell phones as a means of communication, there has been an increase in the rate of daily activities as a result of the fastest means to communicate. Cell phones have enhanced interaction in any place considered to be safe when it comes to socializing. It has helped in maintaining relationship with families, friends and also business partners and in addition it has boosted business activities resulting to balanced economic growth. However social crimes are not left when it comes to cell phone usage, in that strangers are not left behind as a result of eavesdropping when there are communications taking place in public. (Aoki, , and Downes 4) this has fostered a threat on the spillage of personal and private information. Cell phone usage in public is common; people use cell phones in restaurants, public transits, theaters, church and in social gatherings like weddings. Strangers are characteristics of public places and during communication, they will not help but eavesdrop when they are next to someone talking loudly over the phone. When people eavesdrop on a communication they will try to connect the missing information and therefore conclude on the topic under communication. Cell phone use in public is therefore not good at it destruct strangers since it’s a common and natural behavior for people to eavesdrop when a person next to them is communicating. Cell phone use in public places should be eradicated. This should be undertaken because of the distraction that this trend is bringing. There should be policies put in place to bring out the guidelines that should be followed when undertaking conversations using their mobile phones. Cell phone use in public place affects the person communicating and the people surrounding that person. As it affects the listener or rather the eavesdropper, it also affects the person communicating since its automatic that a private and confidential detail could be spilled. This situation happens mostly in places where one cannot find a secret place to communicate an example is when one is communicating in a public transit. Communicating in the presence of a friend also can distract attention since the person communicating tends to give more attention to the caller than the companion (Katz, and Aakhus 82). When people use cell phones in public, they could be doing so to keep them busy. It could be annoying when one finds themselves next to a person communicating, thus one does not have a choice but to either eavesdrop or avoid. This occurs due to the fact that one does not have the power to control the conversation, the time it starts, its content and how long will conversation last. It’s therefore an obligation of the bystander to be calm for the power rest upon the person communicating. According to Humphreys, the decision on the use of cell phones in public is upon the phone user to utilize technology example the use of caller id which provides a choice of either to receive a call or block it (Ran, and Leung 72). Cell phone use in public places has led to a change in ethical issues in social places. It has blurred boundary spaces existing in private and public. Firstly the public space has been turned to private spaces by individuals who display unpleasant behaviors by acting as if they are alone. Cell phones are important in our social aspects but it makes people to break the ethics in the social place. Secondly, it is shown by a study that use of cell phone fulfills a need of belonging in human through connecting with others.

There should be order with the use of cell phones in public places. They should be policies set to guide uses while they are conversing using their cell phones in public places. Cell phones should have limits on their usage and should follow some procedures. This should be undertaken as research shows that cell phone use brings a lot of distraction and annoyance to the bystanders. This will eradicate distraction of use of mobile phones in public places.

Users are increasingly using cell phones currently. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that around 800,000 drivers use their cell phone every day (NHTSA, 2004). Cell phones are a huge distraction to drivers, as well as others who are near the driver being distracted, due to the attention being taken away from the driver. Like changing a stereo, who would want to be distracted by averting their eyes towards their phone? Texting and the conversations that take place on the cell phone cause accidents, and these two certainly represent the main causes. Any use of cell phones should be prohibited due to the dangers it causes to the driver and drivers around the one being distracted.

The use of cell phones while driving is dangerous. Fatal accidents have and will continue to occur with cell phones. There are clearly enough distractions on the road that one must be cautious of, so to handle an automobile safely, such as other automobiles, pedestrians, animals, signage, and many others. The added weights that cell phones convey, in terms of usage and stimuli, are too much for any driver on the road. Cell phone stimuli create an unsafe environment for the driver and those around. From a January 2010 report from the National Safety Council, 28% of car crashes (1.6 million accidents) are caused by cell phone conversations and texting (III, 2010).

Cell phones can delay reaction times, especially those that are hand-held. Other cars and pedestrians become targets when one’s reflexes are undermined with the cell phone. Research demonstrates a reduction of brain activity by 37% (Nationwide, 2009). Thus, a driver’s ability to concentrate is severely undermined with regards to a cell phone conversation or other distraction posed by the cell phone.  According to the NHTSA, 5,780 deaths and 515,00 personal injuries have been caused by driver distractions (III, 2010).

A conversation, albeit with a passenger or by cell phone, draws the attention of the driver away from the road to a degree. Additionally, the driver may not be able to hear surrounding sounds while driving, which is important in many cases, such as sounds from emergency vehicles. Studies have been performed on the comparisons between the danger of cell phone use and normal conversations with a passenger while driving. While there is some literature that has documented the risk of passenger conversations while driving, there are studies that demonstrate the increased danger with cell phone use in comparison. A University of Utah (Drews, 2004) simulation confirms the increased risk of cell phone conversations to passenger conversations.  In these and other experiments, drivers are less distracted while talking to passengers than they are when speaking to someone on a cell phone.  This literature confirms the dangerous status of cell phone use while driving, as it is evident that cell phone conversations are more dangerous than those with a passenger.

Other considerations add onto the distractions. As not all drivers use hands-free capabilities while speaking on the road, this incurs a level of danger.  One less hand is not conducive for safe driving.  When multitasking drivers who use a cell phone couple this use with something else, such as eating or writing down a note, driving safety is further compromised and compounded. As of March 2010, seven states have passed laws requiring hands-free devices when one uses a cell phone while driving. Banned are cell phones while driving in California, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Utah and Washington, plus Washington, D.C and the Virgin Islands (GHSA, 2010). An offender may not have to incur of a traffic offense to be able to be cited for cell phone use while driving. Novice drivers are not able to use a cell phone when driving in twenty-three states. Bus drivers are not able to use the phone on a bus when passengers are present for seventeen states and the District of Columbia (GHSA, 2010).

As one might imagine, driving with the cell phone is made even more unsafe when the act of texting is considered. Texting truly undermines the safety of drivers, even more than that of normal cell phone use on the road. Twenty one states and the District of Columbia ban text messaging for all drivers. In fifteen of these states, and the District of Columbia, this is a primary enforcement. States also display bans for texting, only for drivers (GHSA, 2010). While a number of states have banned texting while driving, further measures are needed.  Universal laws should be imposed with stricter consequences.  As texting may become a more main stream of communication as opposed to oral conversation, texting may become more dangerous than normal cell phone usage. Knowing that cell phone usage should be prohibited while driving based on earlier stats, it becomes evident and urgent to ban texting while driving. While there is limited testing on the subject, research has demonstrated increased danger with texting while driving.  An unreleased study from the University of Utah saw accidents related to texting increase six times (Livadas, 2007). Further studies have demonstrated increased risk in auto accidents from texting, even as text messaging rose in the late 2000s as attention increased. 200,000 accidents are listed by a source from drivers texting while they are driving on their cell phones (III, 2010).

Research has also demonstrated a higher risk of impairment with cell phone use while driving than alcohol use.  This finding is quite shocking.  Intoxicated drivers are not legally permitted to drive automobiles; any equal or higher risk to it should be very revealing. The University of Utah Psychology department studied this in 2003.  The findings demonstrated, and the study concluded, that cell phone use was more impairing than driving intoxicated (Strayer, 2003).  From these results, cell phone use while driving is more dangerous than drunk driving.

Cell phone use while driving is simply not safe. Cell phone usage places a number of limitations on the driver of an automobile, and it has been demonstrated in terms of reaction time, stimuli, and other factors that contribute to its inherent danger. Prohibiting cell phone use is the most important way to help make the roads a safer place. Prohibiting cell phone use will help to eliminate the current dangers posed by driving while talking on the cell phone. Furthermore, more uniform and stronger measures should be implemented against texting, which should go above and beyond the ramifications of driving while talking on a cell phone. Eliminating talking on the cell phone and texting would inevitable produce safer roads and less traffic accidents.  Educating drivers about the dangers of cell phone use while driving can help lessen these dangers. There are enough dangers and distractions on the road today to allow cell phone usage to threaten safe roads.

Augusta National Golf Club has long forbidden cellphones for almost anyone at its hallowed tournament, but patrons delight in making free calls the old-school way.

They call to check in with their bosses or spouses. They call to brag. They call to offer up weather reports, food reviews, golf commentaries, celebrity sightings, souvenir spending confessions, legal advice and trips down memory lane. This year, they called to talk about the solar eclipse.

And no one used a cellphone.

Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia has long forbidden cellphones for almost anyone inside its gates for the Masters Tournament, which is scheduled to conclude Sunday. The event is a proudly aw-shucks anachronism — $1.50 sandwiches , fairways free of towering sponsor logos, spectators invariably described as “patrons,” not fans — but its ban on a device that is the most ubiquitous of our times may be the most reality-suspending throwback of all.

Augusta, though, offers an alternative: Anyone looking to place a call may repair to one of the simple, black courtesy phones with gray buttons and coiled black cords. One of the world’s most hallowed golf clubs, along with a handful of other places like prisons and hospitals, stands as one of the last refuges for the communal telephone.

“Dad, it’s Ali,” Ali Daschbach began this past week.

She paused, a shared moment of anticipation stretching from a phone near the 17th green in east Georgia to Washington State.

“I’m calling you from Augusta.”

Her father had answered, but callers sometimes have to leave messages, a free Masters souvenir for people who check voice mail. AT&T, a tournament sponsor, covers the bill for calls worldwide from Augusta’s phone banks, as stickers by each phone note, along with basic instructions, like pressing 1 to begin the dialing sequence for a long-distance call.

Although Augusta National is renowned for its daunting greens and splendid horticulture — if golf is not your thing, check out the azaleas during Sunday’s broadcast — it is also a place where resistance to modernity, for better or worse, has often been a fixture.

This is a place, after all, that still quaintly mails printed invitations to play the Masters. But it also carries the stigma of exclusion, having resisted admitting Black people as members until 1990 and women until 2012 .

When it comes to telephones, Augusta’s present policies can feel prehistoric, but there was a time when the club was decidedly advanced.

By the early 1940s, less than a decade after the club opened and a time when less than half of American homes had telephones, Augusta National had installed underground phone lines as a part of the Masters scoring system. The 1955 Masters went down in history not only for being Arnold Palmer’s debut at the tournament but also as the first where all 18 holes had phone service to aid in scoring. In 1983, after a man briefly took hostages in the pro shop and demanded to speak to a visiting President Ronald Reagan, the commander in chief used a radio phone to call from the 16th fairway .

Reagan, though, was not attending the Masters; instead, he was playing Augusta with the secretary of state, the secretary of the Treasury and a future Treasury chief. For the tournament, the club has barred fans from carrying cellphones onto its verdant grounds since at least 1993.

Cellphones were the novelty then. Landlines are the novelty now. So is the seemingly lost art of remembering a phone number to call.

“I couldn’t tell you my wife’s phone number,” Hiram Brownell said. “Couldn’t tell you it. Couldn’t tell you none of my friends’ phone numbers.”

So he called no one and talked in person to someone about how, up close, Tiger Woods did not seem all that big.

Nearby a few moments later, Nick Doggette proudly recited his wife’s number. He had just called to tell her he had spent $855 on souvenirs, after the couple had left the previous weekend’s Augusta National Women’s Amateur tournament about $1,000 lighter. She knew it was him since, in many instances, caller IDs flash with word that the calls are coming from Augusta National.

Hayden Love brought a list of numbers, neatly handwritten above his shopping list. He had not memorized the number of Bianca, whom he has been dating for close to a third of his life.

“I called my mom, my girlfriend, my dad — he didn’t answer, and you can put that in there,” Mr. Love said. “And then I called my buddy, who has never been here, and I really just wanted to impress him and flex on him because the caller ID says, ‘the Masters.’”

“He answered the phone and said, ‘Oh, my God.’”

Gigi Lamar called her husband with a romanticized version of the message Mr. Love delivered to his friend: “I’m here alone, and it’s been perfect, and the only thing that’s missing is you.”

Her husband’s response: “Oh, you’ve been drinking,” Ms. Lamar relayed, a plastic cup of white wine in her hand.

Players have long viewed Augusta National as sacred ground for golf and a sanctuary from modern distractions that are part of the landscape of just about any other sporting event.

“You just feel that everyone’s very, very present,” Jordan Spieth, the winner of the 2015 Masters , said on Tuesday. “They’re not focused on if they got the right shot that they’re sending and maybe they don’t even know where your ball went, right?”

Cellphones are permitted at the other major golf tournaments — the British Open, the P.G.A. Championship and the U.S. Open accept only digital tickets — though there are restrictions on where people may place calls. At Augusta, paper tickets, known as badges in Masters parlance, are compulsory, and guards search for phones at security checkpoints.

Augusta National has shown about as much interest in relaxing its phone policy as, say, letting a weekend duffer slip on one of the green jackets intended only for members and Masters winners .

“I just don’t think it’s appropriate,” Billy Payne, Augusta National’s chairman, said after a reporter asked in 2017 about his enduring opposition to cellphones. “And the noise is an irritation to not only players, the dialing, the conversation, it’s a distraction and that’s the way we’ve chosen to deal with it.”

Payne’s successor, Fred S. Ridley, has said he does not “believe that’s a policy that anyone should expect is going to change in the near future, if ever.”

(There have been exceptions: Standing outside the Augusta National clubhouse this past week, Charles Coody, the 1971 Masters winner , grinned broadly as he told a story about talking with Payne years ago when the chairman’s cellphone rang. “He says, ‘Guys, I know I’m not supposed to have this out here, but with my job, I’ve got to be in touch,’” Coody recalled. Augusta National declined to comment.)

AT&T said it did not have any statistics about courtesy calls from Augusta National, where its chief executive, John Stankey, recently became a member. But when Ms. Lamar called her husband, she found herself trying to perfect the etiquette of phone banks.

“He said, ‘Why are you talking like that?’” Ms. Lamar said. “And I said, ‘Honey, there’s someone to the left and to the right of me. I haven’t talked like this in forever.’”

Ms. Daschbach said it had been years since she was phoneless at a public event. The last time, she said, had been when her battery died.

But when she called her father, the man with whom she had watched the Masters while growing up, she had a lot to tell him.

“It rained on us a little bit in line this morning, but now it’s perfect,” she said.

She told him about how she had watched Woods, Justin Thomas and Fred Couples play together. Dad had witnessed the wonder of Woods at Pebble Beach. Now, Ms. Daschbach had seen him at Augusta.

“It’s amazing.”

But before all of that, she had given this reminder: “You can’t have a cellphone on the course.”

About 1 in 5 U.S. teens who’ve heard of ChatGPT have used it for schoolwork

Roughly one-in-five teenagers who have heard of ChatGPT say they have used it to help them do their schoolwork, according to a new Pew Research Center survey of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17. With a majority of teens having heard of ChatGPT, that amounts to 13% of all U.S. teens who have used the generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot in their schoolwork.

Teens in higher grade levels are particularly likely to have used the chatbot to help them with schoolwork. About one-quarter of 11th and 12th graders who have heard of ChatGPT say they have done this. This share drops to 17% among 9th and 10th graders and 12% among 7th and 8th graders.

There is no significant difference between teen boys and girls who have used ChatGPT in this way.

The introduction of ChatGPT last year has led to much discussion about its role in schools , especially whether schools should integrate the new technology into the classroom or ban it .

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to understand American teens’ use and understanding of ChatGPT in the school setting.

The Center conducted an online survey of 1,453 U.S. teens from Sept. 26 to Oct. 23, 2023, via Ipsos. Ipsos recruited the teens via their parents, who were part of its KnowledgePanel . The KnowledgePanel is a probability-based web panel recruited primarily through national, random sampling of residential addresses. The survey was weighted to be representative of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 who live with their parents by age, gender, race and ethnicity, household income, and other categories.

This research was reviewed and approved by an external institutional review board (IRB), Advarra, an independent committee of experts specializing in helping to protect the rights of research participants.

Here are the  questions used for this analysis , along with responses, and its  methodology .

Teens’ awareness of ChatGPT

Overall, two-thirds of U.S. teens say they have heard of ChatGPT, including 23% who have heard a lot about it. But awareness varies by race and ethnicity, as well as by household income:

  • 72% of White teens say they’ve heard at least a little about ChatGPT, compared with 63% of Hispanic teens and 56% of Black teens.
  • 75% of teens living in households that make $75,000 or more annually have heard of ChatGPT. Much smaller shares in households with incomes between $30,000 and $74,999 (58%) and less than $30,000 (41%) say the same.

Teens who are more aware of ChatGPT are more likely to use it for schoolwork. Roughly a third of teens who have heard a lot about ChatGPT (36%) have used it for schoolwork, far higher than the 10% among those who have heard a little about it.

When do teens think it’s OK for students to use ChatGPT?

For teens, whether it is – or is not – acceptable for students to use ChatGPT depends on what it is being used for.

There is a fair amount of support for using the chatbot to explore a topic. Roughly seven-in-ten teens who have heard of ChatGPT say it’s acceptable to use when they are researching something new, while 13% say it is not acceptable.

However, there is much less support for using ChatGPT to do the work itself. Just one-in-five teens who have heard of ChatGPT say it’s acceptable to use it to write essays, while 57% say it is not acceptable. And 39% say it’s acceptable to use ChatGPT to solve math problems, while a similar share of teens (36%) say it’s not acceptable.

Some teens are uncertain about whether it’s acceptable to use ChatGPT for these tasks. Between 18% and 24% say they aren’t sure whether these are acceptable use cases for ChatGPT.

Those who have heard a lot about ChatGPT are more likely than those who have only heard a little about it to say it’s acceptable to use the chatbot to research topics, solve math problems and write essays. For instance, 54% of teens who have heard a lot about ChatGPT say it’s acceptable to use it to solve math problems, compared with 32% among those who have heard a little about it.

Romance scams are where a fraudster creates fake dating profiles, establishes communication with a victim, and wins their trust over time before creating a fake emergency for which they say they need a short-term loan.

A typical example will see the scammer claim they have been robbed while abroad, and need cash sent to enable them to settle a hotel bill so they can fly home. They will claim the money will be repaid as soon as they land back in the US, a day or so later.

In most cases, the best a scammer can do to draw victims in is using a mix of text and voice chat, but a new tactic is seeing them now conduct live video calls to make their fake identity seem even more convincing.

Uses two phones with a face-swap app

A paywalled Wired report says the scammers are known as Yahoo Boys. The site got access to videos of the scammers at work which show two different methods. The first involves using two phones.

The scammers use a setup of two phones and a face-swapping app. The scammer holds the phone they are calling their victim with—they’re mostly seen using Zoom, Maimon says, but it can work on any platform—and uses its rear camera to record the screen of a second phone. This second phone has its camera pointing at the scammer’s face and is running a face-swapping app. They often place the two phones on stands to ensure they don’t move and use ring lights to improve conditions for a real-time face-swap, the videos show.

The second runs on a laptop.

Here, the scammer uses a webcam to capture their face and software running on the laptop changes their appearance. Videos of the setup show scammers are able to see their own face alongside the altered deepfake, with just the manipulated image being displayed over the live video call.

If you’re wondering what subterfuge Wired had to employ to obtain video footage of the scams in operation, the astonishing answer is: none at all. The scammers are so brazen they are happy to boast about their cons in Telegram group chats, complete with video footage. In some cases, this is to sell the setups to other scammers.

Rachel Tobac, cofounder of SocialProof security, says the apps have improved dramatically in the past year.

Especially the ones where they’re able to change the pitch of their voice and the look of their face—sometimes changing skin tone, hair, eye color, everything’s matched. It’s pretty wild.

Protecting yourself from romance scams

As always, the advice when using dating apps is to be cautious until you’ve met someone, and anyone asking for money is an immediate giveaway that you’re talking to a scammer – no matter how convincing they may seem.

Additionally, beware social media apps that ask you to upload a face photo to be transformed into something like an older or younger version of you, a Samurai warrior or whatever. These apps are designed to collect data used to train things like face-swap apps.
