"The community service accomplishment that I'm most proud of is the work I did to help organize the First Annual Family Fun Day at the retirement home. My job was to design and organize fun activities that senior citizens and their younger relatives could enjoy. The event lasted eight hours and included ten different games, two performances, and a movie screening with popcorn. Almost 200 residents and family members attended throughout the day. This event was important because it provided an opportunity for senior citizens to connect with their family members in a way they aren't often able to. It also made the retirement home seem more fun and enjoyable to children, and we have seen an increase in the number of kids coming to visit their grandparents since the event."

The second passage is stronger for a variety of reasons. First, it goes into much more detail about the work the volunteer did. The first passage only states that she helped "organize a family event." That really doesn't tell readers much about her work or what her responsibilities were. The second passage is much clearer; her job was to "design and organize fun activities."

The second passage also explains the event in more depth. A family day can be many things; remember that your readers are likely not familiar with what you're talking about, so details help them get a clearer picture.

Lastly, the second passage makes the importance of the event clear: it helped residents connect with younger family members, and it helped retirement homes seem less intimidating to children, so now some residents see their grand kids more often.

Step 6: Discuss What You Learned

One of the final things to include in your essay should be the impact that your community service had on you. You can discuss skills you learned, such as carpentry, public speaking, animal care, or another skill.

You can also talk about how you changed personally. Are you more patient now? More understanding of others? Do you have a better idea of the type of career you want? Go into depth about this, but be honest. Don't say your community service changed your life if it didn't because trite statements won't impress readers.

In order to support your statements, provide more examples. If you say you're more patient now, how do you know this? Do you get less frustrated while playing with your younger siblings? Are you more willing to help group partners who are struggling with their part of the work? You've probably noticed by now that including specific examples and details is one of the best ways to create a strong and believable essay .

"As a result of my community service, I learned a lot about building houses and became a more mature person."

"As a result of my community service, I gained hands-on experience in construction. I learned how to read blueprints, use a hammer and nails, and begin constructing the foundation of a two-bedroom house. Working on the house could be challenging at times, but it taught me to appreciate the value of hard work and be more willing to pitch in when I see someone needs help. My dad has just started building a shed in our backyard, and I offered to help him with it because I know from my community service how much work it is. I also appreciate my own house more, and I know how lucky I am to have a roof over my head."

The second passage is more impressive and memorable because it describes the skills the writer learned in more detail and recounts a specific story that supports her claim that her community service changed her and made her more helpful.

Step 7: Finish Strong

Just as you started your essay in a way that would grab readers' attention, you want to finish your essay on a strong note as well. A good way to end your essay is to state again the impact your work had on you, your community, or both. Reiterate how you changed as a result of your community service, why you found the work important, or how it helped others.

Compare these two concluding statements:

"In conclusion, I learned a lot from my community service at my local museum, and I hope to keep volunteering and learning more about history."

"To conclude, volunteering at my city's American History Museum has been a great experience. By leading tours and participating in special events, I became better at public speaking and am now more comfortable starting conversations with people. In return, I was able to get more community members interested in history and our local museum. My interest in history has deepened, and I look forward to studying the subject in college and hopefully continuing my volunteer work at my university's own museum."

The second passage takes each point made in the first passage and expands upon it. In a few sentences, the second passage is able to clearly convey what work the volunteer did, how she changed, and how her volunteer work benefited her community.

The author of the second passage also ends her essay discussing her future and how she'd like to continue her community service, which is a good way to wrap things up because it shows your readers that you are committed to community service for the long-term.

Man is social by nature. He wishes to live in a society that is healthy. To serve that society and to better its condition is the greatest wish of man. The student of today is the citizen of tomorrow. He is in the making. He should, therefore be given a chance to serve and better the society in which he lives.

In an Indian village there is a great field for social service. Gandhiji has set a very good example in Champaran. Students should go to villages and render social service there. This will be useful both for villages as well as for the students.

Students have only bookish knowledge. They must go to a neighbouring village. This will bring them in practical life. They will get a chance to tackle problems themselves. They will be required to employ their energy, mind and heart. This will develop in them the habit of thinking and working. They will get a chance to enjoy open air and to come close to villagers. They will know that, though uneducated, villagers are not wholly bad. By coming in contact with nature. their outlook will be widened.

Moreover, students will learn the dignity of labour. They will have team spirit. They will learn how to organise and to work in co-operation. They will spread among uneducated villagers not only literacy but the habit of living neat and clean also. They will entertain the tired villagers with wise talks and magic lanterns. They will teach villagers the lesson of self-help and self-reliance.

The contact of city-bred students and villagers will not be a mere waste of many fear. There may be difficulties, for villagers are suspicious by nature. But the teacher who accompanies the team will gain confidence. Village women will be approached through girl-students. Hence social service, should be made a compulsory part of our education.

Man is a social animal and he cannot live alone. Society does its best to provide individuals with all comforts and amenities of life. All individuals have also an obligation towards the society. Students, in particular, owe a debt to the society. It is therefore their duty to do some kind of social service for others.

Students have no worries and cares about earning their livelihood and they have unlimited vigour and vitality. So they can be of great help in the field of social service. Almost eighty per cent of the population of India lives in rural areas. Most of the people living in villages are illiterate. They are the victims of many social evils. Students can do a great deal to improve the lot of the villagers.

During their vacation, students should go to the villages and serve the villagers. Students can also provide help to many other social organisations which are active in villages and provide different types of services to the people living in rural areas. They can help the sufferers of an epidemic or help in the famine-stricken area.

Students can also do something for the defence of their country. They can get training in first aid, fire fighting, air raid precautions, use of rifles, nursing etc. It has been found that students today are not interested in social work. They lead a dull, cheerless and irresponsible life. They idle away most of their time in going to cinemas. This is very deplorable. Such activities do not provide inner joy to individuals. On the contrary, students waste their money and precious time in these useless pursuits. Social service done with selfless efforts provides a great inner joy and keeps an individual happy, mentally as well as emotionally.

Though they should devote a greater part of their time in attending to their studies, they should spend a portion of their time in the service of the people Most of the time of a student is wasted in idle gossip, in roaming and in fruitless work. It is better to utilize the power of youth in socially productive work. If a student utilizes his time fruitfully and in socially useful work he gets contentment. Students should remember that they are born for the improvement of the society. They can help the mankind in the best possible way.

The value of social service should be taught to students to create inspiration in them. Students can provide social services in many ways. Firstly, Students can play the educational role in very successful manner. They can teach illiterate people in villages and towns whenever they have free time.. They may provide service to the members of the society in their time of need. Secondly, students can have discussions with common people everywhere on our social and political duties. We know that the putting garbage at proper places on roads and keeping the streets clean are very important. Students can tell the people how to do it. They can take part in cleaning and mending themselves.

Thirdly, students can work within social service organizations like Jaago Foundation, Red crescent etc. to provide help and guidance to the suffering humanity. They can utilize their time in assist helpless, poor and ill people in reaching hospitals. They can take out people from flood and earthquake.

Great things are expected of students as they are the citizens of tomorrow. On their broad shoulders rests the responsibility of eradicating illiteracy and ignorance and uplifting the society. India expects them to do their duty and to donate willingly and smilingly, blood, toil, hard work and labour. The aim before students should not be strikes and hooliganism but selfless social service. Students are not mercenaries but missionaries. They are the torch bearers. out They are to burn other lamps with their light. They are to go to serve their country fellowmen. They are to inject their blood into the dry bones of the nation. They are to spread light and laughter wherever they go.

Students get long vacation. It is criminal to let them go waste. Students from vital areas can help the villagers in agriculture. They can turn the fallow lands into smiling fields with their own hands. Students can demonstrate to the villagers the scientific methods of agriculture. They can teach them how to collect village refuse and turn it into manure which doubles the yield of crops per acre. They. can impress the villagers that to burn cow dung is to burn gold. It is the students who can do immense social service in the Community Projects and National Extension Services. They can brings about a revolution in the villagers and completely change the face of the country.

Illiteracy is rampant in India. It prevails in every nook and corner. Students owe a debt to society. It is their duty to impart education to their illiterate brethren. They must give in the same measure as they have received and are still receiving. The villagers cannot exercise their right to vote intelligently and correctly if they cannot read a book or a newspaper. The students can do a lot in this respect and they must not shirk off their responsibility.

True social service lies in learning the dignity of labour, learning to do things with our own hands. Students must serve the masses as a matter of national duty and as a labour of love. It would be in the interest of the country if social service is made compulsory for the award of a University degree.

To sum up, every one must work hard to raise India. More work falls to the share of the students as they are more energetic than others. Students must have a burning desire to serve India. They must not expect any reward in return. A good action is its own reward.

Ignorant people do not know the laws of health and sanitation. As a result they fall victim to many diseases. If the students can teach them how to observe the laws of health and sanitation, they may be free from the attack of these diseases. They will then learn to live in a better way. It is a great social service for the uplift of the country.

Besides these, there are many other ways to show their love towards the country by rendering social services to people. A famine breaks out or a flood or earthquake devastates a part of the country. It is then the duty of all, especially the students, to help the distressed people. Relief organizations are formed to help them. Students should be volunteers in these organizations. They will collect subscriptions, clothes, food, medicines and building materials. They will go to the spot and help the suffering people with all these things. A helpless person dies. Students may cremate the dead body. This is a social service.

Sometimes there are big social, religious, political or other gatherings. People assemble there in large numbers. Students can render useful social services by helping these people in various ways. During long vacations students may go to villages and do many constructive works themselves, such as making roads, re-digging neglected ponds, clearing jungles, building schools, houses, etc. with the help of the villagers.

Students are a great source of strength for the country. They have new ideas, energy and power to work. If they are rightly guided, they can render a very valuable service to society. There must be selfless leaders to make the right use of them. Under proper guidance and noble inspiration, they can work wonders. Students have a spirit to work but the guardians and teachers should guide them in the right way. Social services can be safely managed if they can be guided properly. Our leaders should guide them in the right way.

Man has three duties. Duty towards God, duty towards parents and duty towards mankind. Students are born to read, to study books to prepare themselves for examinations. The hue and cry of the world and the heat and dust of life generally do not move them. But there are occasions in a nation’s life when normal duties suspend and normal life does not function. Then the services of students are essential. Students are not separated/isolated from society. They are also social beings like other classes of people. They enjoy the same social benefits, rights and privileges. There is no rose without a thorn and no right without duties. No wonder then that students have certain duties to the society in which they live in.

National health: Student’s services are necessary in the field of our national health. They can play an important role. Female students can teach the uneducated women how to keep their houses neat and clean, how to bring up children and look after their health. The village people and the people living in the slums suffer from many diseases. They have no knowledge about health and environment. The students can teach them about the basic rules of health and environment.

In population control: Bangladesh is an over populated country. Most of the villagers of our country are illiterate. They are also superstitious. They have no knowledge about family planning. They are unwilling to accept family planning. In this regard students can render a good social service. They can explain to illiterate village people the need for adopting family planning.

In education: Ours is an undeveloped country. So the students of our country have many things to do for the welfare and good of the country. They can render free services in different spheres of our national life. Most of the people of our country are illiterate. The students can open night schools and teach the illiterate people. They can remove illiteracy from our country. During the vacation they can go to the villages and teach the rural folk.

In agriculture: Bangladesh is an agricultural country. Her prosperity depends on agriculture. But the farmers of our country are illiterate. They have no knowledge about scientific method of cultivation. In this case students can teach the illiterate farmers.

In natural calamities: During natural calamities students can render better services. During floods and cyclones and famine students stand by the affected people. Students beg money from the rich, raise funds, rescue people, feed the hungry, nurse the sick and cloth the naked. During epidemics medical students and other students may serve the sick with proper food. cloth, medicine and other necessary things.

Conclusion: Students are the makers of society. They are the soldiers of social peace. They should serve the society without any selfish motive.

Like others, students have also their duties towards the society. Students are the future citizens of the country and have different roles to play. Though they should devote a greater part of their time in attending to their studies they should spend a portion of their time in the service of the people. It is needless to say that they get much time for merry making, playing, amusements, touring etc. apart from their routine life of study. Students should cultivate the spirit of service from the very formative stage.

Most of the time of a student is wasted in idle gossip, in roaming and in fruitless work. It is better to utilise the power of youth in socially productive work than to squander our precious time in loitering at the market place or before theatre hall.

If a student utilizes his time fruitfully and in socially useful work he gets contentment. Contentment is his satisfaction with his position. Students should remember that they are born for the improvement of the society by instilling the spirit of service in them. They can help the mankind in the best possible way.

If a student does not have the will or spirit to work he cannot succeed in life. We elevate our life style by doing well to the society. Social service is a voluntary work and one cannot be compelled to do a work. Social service fulfills two conditions. It helps one to utilise the leisure hours and the society gets benefited by it.

The value of social service should be taught to students to create inspiration in them. They should be enthused to pay their utmost strength and service to the society to make their existence meaningful.

Students should be taught how to serve the people of their country. They may teach reading, writing and arithmetic to the vast majority of illiterate Indians. They may render service to the members of the society in their time of need. They may relieve the suffering of the masses by nursing the sick.

Spreading education is no mean service. They can make the illiterate masses aware of their rights and duties. Once zeal is created amongst the students illiteracy may be wiped out. The Government cannot fulfill the ambitions of the vast mass of people.

Hence the students can guide the people in the right direction whether it is a question of digging canals or constructing educational institutions. Sympathy and fellow feeling should be imparted the students to do some noble works for the people.

People of our country are not aware of how to keep the atmosphere hygienic. People can be taught by students how to lead a life of cleanliness and how to keep their lives free from diseases.

Students can co-operate with people on matters of public interest such as education, sanitation, trade and commerce. Students can participate in cleaning drains, ponds during the leisure hours. They can help people during natural calamities such as earth quake, flood, drought, cyclone by collecting funds from different sources.

Students have a spirit to work but the guardians and, teacher should guide them in the right way. Social service can be safely managed if they can be guided properly. Our leaders should guide them in the right way.

The students have the big responsibility to take care their social surroundings and give more importance to keep their surroundings hygienic and eco-friendly. Moreover, they have an important role to launch campaigns and conduct seminars against the social evils of dowry, superstitions, drug addiction, casteism, communalism etc. So, the students should take part in these social services because it contains much practical education values.

Students Are Likely Writing Millions of Papers With AI

Students have submitted more than 22 million papers that may have used generative AI in the past year, new data released by plagiarism detection company Turnitin shows.

A year ago, Turnitin rolled out an AI writing detection tool that was trained on its trove of papers written by students as well as other AI-generated texts. Since then, more than 200 million papers have been reviewed by the detector, predominantly written by high school and college students. Turnitin found that 11 percent may contain AI-written language in 20 percent of its content, with 3 percent of the total papers reviewed getting flagged for having 80 percent or more AI writing. (Turnitin is owned by Advance, which also owns Condé Nast, publisher of WIRED.) Turnitin says its detector has a false positive rate of less than 1 percent when analyzing full documents.

ChatGPT’s launch was met with knee-jerk fears that the English class essay would die . The chatbot can synthesize information and distill it near-instantly—but that doesn’t mean it always gets it right. Generative AI has been known to hallucinate , creating its own facts and citing academic references that don’t actually exist. Generative AI chatbots have also been caught spitting out biased text on gender and race . Despite those flaws, students have used chatbots for research, organizing ideas, and as a ghostwriter . Traces of chatbots have even been found in peer-reviewed, published academic writing .

Teachers understandably want to hold students accountable for using generative AI without permission or disclosure. But that requires a reliable way to prove AI was used in a given assignment. Instructors have tried at times to find their own solutions to detecting AI in writing, using messy, untested methods to enforce rules , and distressing students. Further complicating the issue, some teachers are even using generative AI in their grading processes.

Detecting the use of gen AI is tricky. It’s not as easy as flagging plagiarism, because generated text is still original text. Plus, there’s nuance to how students use gen AI; some may ask chatbots to write their papers for them in large chunks or in full, while others may use the tools as an aid or a brainstorm partner.

Students also aren't tempted by only ChatGPT and similar large language models. So-called word spinners are another type of AI software that rewrites text, and may make it less obvious to a teacher that work was plagiarized or generated by AI. Turnitin’s AI detector has also been updated to detect word spinners, says Annie Chechitelli, the company’s chief product officer. It can also flag work that was rewritten by services like spell checker Grammarly, which now has its own generative AI tool . As familiar software increasingly adds generative AI components, what students can and can’t use becomes more muddled.

Detection tools themselves have a risk of bias. English language learners may be more likely to set them off; a 2023 study found a 61.3 percent false positive rate when evaluating Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exams with seven different AI detectors. The study did not examine Turnitin’s version. The company says it has trained its detector on writing from English language learners as well as native English speakers. A study published in October found that Turnitin was among the most accurate of 16 AI language detectors in a test that had the tool examine undergraduate papers and AI-generated papers.

Schools that use Turnitin had access to the AI detection software for a free pilot period, which ended at the start of this year. Chechitelli says a majority of the service’s clients have opted to purchase the AI detection. But the risks of false positives and bias against English learners have led some universities to ditch the tools for now. Montclair State University in New Jersey announced in November that it would pause use of Turnitin’s AI detector. Vanderbilt University and Northwestern University did the same last summer.

“This is hard. I understand why people want a tool,” says Emily Isaacs, executive director of the Office of Faculty Excellence at Montclair State. But Isaacs says the university is concerned about potentially biased results from AI detectors, as well as the fact that the tools can’t provide confirmation the way they can with plagiarism. Plus, Montclair State doesn’t want to put a blanket ban on AI, which will have some place in academia. With time and more trust in the tools, the policies could change. “It’s not a forever decision, it’s a now decision,” Isaacs says.

Chechitelli says the Turnitin tool shouldn’t be the only consideration in passing or failing a student. Instead, it’s a chance for teachers to start conversations with students that touch on all of the nuance in using generative AI. “People don’t really know where that line should be,” she says.

Call for High School Projects

Machine learning for social impact .

The Thirty-Eighth Annual Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS 2024) is an interdisciplinary conference that brings together researchers in machine learning, neuroscience, statistics, optimization, computer vision, natural language processing, life sciences, natural sciences, social sciences, and other adjacent fields. 

This year, we invite high school students to submit research papers on the topic of machine learning for social impact.  A subset of finalists will be selected to present their projects virtually and will have their work spotlighted on the NeurIPS homepage.  In addition, the leading authors of up to five winning projects will be invited to attend an award ceremony at NeurIPS 2024 in Vancouver.  

Each submission must describe independent work wholly performed by the high school student authors.  We expect each submission to highlight either demonstrated positive social impact or the potential for positive social impact using machine learning. Application areas may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Agriculture
  • Climate change
  • Homelessness
  • Food security
  • Mental health
  • Water quality

Authors will be asked to confirm that their submissions accord with the NeurIPS code of conduct and the NeurIPS code of ethics .

Submission deadline: All submissions must be made by June 27th, 4pm EDT. The system will close after this time, and no further submissions will be possible.

We are using OpenReview to manage submissions. Papers should be submitted here . Submission will open June 1st.  Submissions under review will be visible only to their assigned program committee. We will not be soliciting comments from the general public during the reviewing process. Anyone who plans to submit a paper as an author or a co-author will need to create (or update) their OpenReview profile by the full paper submission deadline. 

Formatting instructions:   All submissions must be in PDF format. Submissions are limited to four content pages , including all figures and tables; additional pages containing only references are allowed. You must format your submission using the NeurIPS 2024 LaTeX style file using the “preprint” option for non-anonymous submission. The maximum file size for submissions is 50MB. Submissions that violate the NeurIPS style (e.g., by decreasing margins or font sizes) or page limits may be rejected without further review.  Papers may be rejected without consideration of their merits if they fail to meet the submission requirements, as described in this document. 

Mentorship and collaboration:  The submitted research can be a component of a larger research endeavor involving external collaborators, but the submission should describe only the authors’ contributions.  The authors can also have external mentors but must disclose the nature of the mentorship.  At the time of submission, the authors will be asked to describe the involvement of any mentors or external collaborators and to distinguish mentor and collaborator contributions from those of the authors.  In addition, the authors may (optionally) to include an acknowledgements section acknowledging the contributions of others following the content sections of the submission. The acknowledgements section will not count toward the submission page limit.

Proof of high school attendance: Submitting authors will also be asked to upload a signed letter, on school letterhead, from each author’s high school confirming that the author was enrolled in high school during the 2023-2024 academic year.

Supplementary artifacts:  In their submission, authors may link to supplementary artifacts including videos, working demonstrations, digital posters, websites, or source code.  Please do not link to additional text.  All such supplementary material should be wholly created by the authors and should directly support the submission content. 

Review process:   Each submission will be reviewed by anonymous referees.  The authors, however, should not be anonymous.  No written feedback will be provided to the authors.  

Use of Large Language Models (LLMs): We welcome authors to use any tool that is suitable for preparing high-quality papers and research. However, we ask authors to keep in mind two important criteria. First, we expect papers to fully describe their methodology.  Any tool that is important to that methodology, including the use of LLMs, should be described also. For example, authors should mention tools (including LLMs) that were used for data processing or filtering, visualization, facilitating or running experiments, or proving theorems. It may also be advisable to describe the use of LLMs in implementing the method (if this corresponds to an important, original, or non-standard component of the approach). Second, authors are responsible for the entire content of the paper, including all text and figures, so while authors are welcome to use any tool they wish for writing the paper, they must ensure that all text is correct and original.

Dual submissions:  Submissions that are substantially similar to papers that the authors have previously published or submitted in parallel to other peer-reviewed venues with proceedings or journals may not be submitted to NeurIPS. Papers previously presented at workshops or science fairs are permitted, so long as they did not appear in a conference proceedings (e.g., CVPRW proceedings), a journal, or a book.  However, submissions will not be published in formal proceedings, so work submitted to this call may be published elsewhere in the future. Plagiarism is prohibited by the NeurIPS Code of Conduct .

Paper checklist: In order to improve the rigor and transparency of research submitted to and published at NeurIPS, authors are required to complete a paper checklist . The paper checklist is intended to help authors reflect on a wide variety of issues relating to responsible machine learning research, including reproducibility, transparency, research ethics, and societal impact. The checklist does not count towards the page limit and will be entered in OpenReview.

Moscow: City, Spectacle, Capital of Photography , an exhibition of 20th-century photographs of Moscow, opens at Columbia University's Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 and remains on display through Saturday, June 21, 2003.

Moscow has been a powerful magnet for many Russian photographers of the 20th century. Moscow: City, Spectacle, Capital of Photography presents the work of 31 photographers, whose images have defined the visual experience of Moscow from the 1920s to the present. Diverse in form and strategy, the 90 photographs chosen for the exhibition trace the history of Russian documentary photography and offer insight into individual practices. From Aleksandr Rodchenko's constructivist visions and Evgenii Khaldei's humanist landscapes to Igor Moukhin's scenes of urban spectacle and alienation in the works of Russia's key 20th-century photographers, Moscow ventures beyond the expected image as a site of famous landmarks, architectural treasures and dramatic lifestyles.

Early 20th-century photographers Boris Ignatovich and Arkadii Shaikhet saw themselves in the vanguard of an emerging mass-media culture, defining with their cameras the visual experience of Soviet modernity. For nearly 70 years, Soviet photography was assigned the duty of maintaining the ideological rigidity of the Soviet State. Yet, as examples of the work of Iakov Khalip, Anatolii Egorov, Mikhail Savin, and Mark Markov-Grinberg show, Soviet photographic practices were much more complex than has been previously acknowledged. The works of these photographers remain intensely compelling to a modernist eye.

Contemporary Russian photographers, such as Lev Melikhov, Valerii Stigneev and Sergei Leontiev, engage with the legacy of the Soviet documentary photography. But for them the documentary is a complex and multivalent genre, which incorporates subjectivity, ambiguity and reflexivity and comments on social and cultural issues without losing sight of the position from which that commentary is made. In the recent photographs by Vladimir Kupriyanov, Igor Moukhin, Anna Gorunova and Pakito Infante, the "real" space of Moscow is replaced by an imaginary and optical spaces of virtuality.

The works in the exhibition are on loan from Moscow's Cultural Center Dom, and many are being shown outside Russia for the first time. In conjunction with the exhibition, the Wallach Art Gallery is publishing an illustrated catalogue with a scholarly essay by the exhibition curator, Nadia Michoustina, a Ph.D. candidate in Columbia University's Department of Slavic Languages. The essay presents a nuanced history of Russian photography of the 20th century, and contributes to an interpretation of extraordinary images.

Samusocial Moskva, a non-profit foundation registered under Russian law since 2003, works on these issues in order to fight social exclusion in Russia. For several years, Samusocial Moskva has been focusing on homeless adults and has developed a collaboration with the Moscow city administration for this purpose. In particular, Samusocial Moskva offers psychological and social support and guidance to people staying in Moscow’s municipal centers. Since the end of 2019, Samusocial Moskva has resumed mobile outreach, providing pre-medical and social services to homeless adults on the streets of Moscow. Since January 2020, street rounds have taken place four times a week, focusing on places where homeless people stay and socialize. Samusocial Moskva also works on dissemination of information, best practices, organization of professional exchanges and seminars based on the concept and methodology of Samusocial to fight social exclusion.

The year 2021 was marked by the development of interventions in new cities of the country. After exploratory missions, Samusocial Moskva signed partnership agreements with three Russian NGOs working with homeless people in the cities of Saint Petersburg, Perm and Khabarovsk. It has recruited and takes charge of the contracting of a doctor in each of the three cities, to allow these organizations to add this medical service to their street and center interventions in favor of homeless people in Saint Petersburg, Perm and Khabarovsk.

Also, the gradual resumption of public meetings and face-to-face teaching in Russia allowed Samusocial Moskva to again conduct interventions for students; three interventions were held at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, the State University for Friendship between Peoples and for the Faculty of Economics of the State University in St. Petersburg.

Mobile Help Teams (EMA)

The team provides pre-medical advice and care, social support and facilitates access to medical and social facilities for homeless people. It provides free medicines, hygiene materials and other essential products, as well as information. Samusocial Moskva ‘s doctors can also provide rapid HIV/TB/Hepatitis C testing, counseling and referrals on these diseases that are very common in Moscow. The outreach work covers places where homeless people meet and spend the night (food distribution points, train stations…) and adapts to the changing seasons.

Samusocial Moskva provides services to homeless people at the E. P. Glinka Social Adaptation Center and at its branches in various Moscow districts. P. Samusocial Moskva assists beneficiaries in obtaining documents necessary for accessing health services, making medical appointments and planning medical care. Meeting Time: 09:45 AM‑11:00 AM  Instructor: Abhishek Chandra Course Description: In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the pervasiveness, scale, and distribution of computing infrastructure: ranging from cloud, HPC systems, and data centers to edge computing and pervasive computing in the form of micro-data centers, mobile phones, sensors, and IoT devices embedded in the environment around us. The growing amount of computing, storage, and networking demand leads to increased energy usage, carbon emissions, and natural resource consumption. To reduce their environmental impact, there is a growing need to make computing systems sustainable. In this course, we will examine sustainable computing from a systems perspective. Biden cancels $300 million in student debt as loan forgiveness under this program hits record.

The Education Department announced that President Joe Biden has canceled another $300 million in debt through a student loan forgiveness program that has hit record approval rates.

The details released by the department last week were part of a broader wave of loan forgiveness approved by the Biden administration under a number of separate programs, and comes as officials are moving forward with yet another mass debt cancellation program that they hope will survive judicial scrutiny.

“Today we are helping 277,000 borrowers who have been making payments on their student loans for at least a decade,” said Under Secretary of Education James Kvaal in a statement on Friday, referring to this wider batch of student loan forgiveness approvals. “They have paid what they can afford, and they have earned loan forgiveness for the balance of their loan.”

Here are the details.

Student Loan Forgiveness Through PSLF Reaches Record Highs

The $300 million in student loan forgiveness was approved under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. PSLF can wipe out federal student debt for borrowers who devote their careers to public service work, which includes employment for certain nonprofit and government agencies. Borrowers can qualify for loan forgiveness after making 120 qualifying monthly payments, the equivalent of 10 years.

But PSLF was plagued by numerous problems since its creation in 2007, resulting in borrower confusion and low approval rates. The Biden administration implemented several initiatives — some temporary, some more lasting — to improve access to the program and make it easier for borrowers to receive PSLF credit. These changes include:

  • The Limited PSLF Waiver, a temporary program that ended in 2022 and relaxed key requirements of PSLF to account for past loan servicing and administrative problems.
  • The IDR Account Adjustment, another temporary initiative that is ongoing and extends several of the features of the Limited PSLF Waiver.
  • Regulatory reforms that relax some of the strict rules defining qualifying payments and qualifying employment, including a new “buyback” option that serves as a safe harbor for loan periods that might not otherwise count toward forgiveness.
  • A new streamlined online platform for submitting and processing PSLF employment certifications.

As a result of these changes, the PSLF program has experienced remarkable changes. When Biden first took office, the program had a one percent approval rate, and only a few thousand borrowers had received student loan forgiveness.

“The Administration has now approved $62.8 billion in forgiveness for almost 876,000 borrowers through PSLF” since 2021, according to Education Department data released last Friday.

Additional Student Loan Forgiveness Approved Under Other Programs

The PSLF approvals announced last week were part of a larger batch of student loan forgiveness announced by the Biden administration under other programs.

The Education Department approved at least $3 billion in forgiveness through a feature of the new SAVE plan that can accelerate debt relief . SAVE — a new income-driven repayment plan unveiled by the Biden administration last fall — can shorten borrowers’ IDR forgiveness timelines from 20 or 25 years to as little as 10 years if they took out small amounts of loans. More than 200,000 borrowers got their student debt cancelled under this provision this month.

The department approved another 65,700 borrowers for debt relief under the IDR Account Adjustment. This temporary initiative relaxes the rules pertaining to 20 or 25-year student loan forgiveness under income-driven repayment plans, and allows many past periods of repayment, deferment, and forbearance to potentially count. These periods can also count toward PSLF, as well, if borrowers were working in qualifying public service employment at the time. The IDR Account Adjustment is set to wind down this summer, and certain borrowers may need to take action before the end of April in order to qualify.

New Biden Student Loan Forgiveness Plan Could Arrive Soon

Last Friday’s announcement of the latest wave of student loan forgiveness followed another blockbuster announcement earlier that week that President Biden would soon be unveiling a new mass debt cancellation plan.

The new loan forgiveness program is designed as a replacement for Biden’s first mass debt relief plan that the Supreme Court rejected last year. The latest effort will target relief to five groups of borrowers , including those facing hardship. The program must go through several additional administrative steps before it is officially launched, but borrowers could start applying as soon as this fall — provided it doesn’t get struck down in court, which could very well happen.
