A seminar paper is a work of original research that presents a specific thesis and is presented to a group of interested peers, usually in an academic setting.   • Use your library’s databases, such as EBSCO or JSTOR, rather than a general internet search. University libraries subscribe to many databases. These databases provide you with free access to articles and other resources that you cannot usually gain access to by using a search engine. If you don't have access to these databases, you can try Google Scholar.

Step 2 Evaluate your sources to determine their credibility.

  • Publication's credentials Consider the type of source, such as a peer-reviewed journal or book. Look for sources that are academically based and accepted by the research community. Additionally, your sources should be unbiased.
  • Author's credentials Choose sources that include an author’s name and that provide credentials for that author. The credentials should indicate something about why this person is qualified to speak as an authority on the subject. For example, an article about a medical condition will be more trustworthy if the author is a medical doctor.   • Bias Think about whether or not this author has presented an objective, well-reasoned account of the topic. How often does the tone indicate a strong preference for one side of the argument?   • Publication date Think about whether or not this source presents the most up to date information on the subject. Noting the publication date is especially important for scientific subjects, since new technologies and techniques have made some earlier findings irrelevant. [15] X Research source
  • Information provided in the source If you are still questioning the trustworthiness of this source, cross check some of the information provided against a trustworthy source. If the information that this author presents contradicts one of your trustworthy sources, then it might not be a good source to use in your paper.

Step 3 Read your research.

  • Give yourself plenty of time to read your sources and work to understand what they are saying. Ask your professor for clarification if something is unclear to you.
  • Consider if it's easier for you to read and annotate your sources digitally or if you'd prefer to print them out and annotate by hand.

Step 4 Take notes while you read your sources.

  • Be careful to properly cite your sources when taking notes. Even accidental plagiarism may result in a failing grade on a paper.

Drafting Your Paper

Step 1 Write a thesis.

  • Make sure that your thesis presents an original point of view. Since seminar papers are advanced writing projects, be certain that your thesis presents a perspective that is advanced and original. [18] X Research source

  • Keep in mind that your introduction should identify the main idea of your seminar paper and act as a preview to the rest of your paper.

Step 4 Provide relevant background information to guide your readers.

  • For example, in a paper about relics in medieval England, you might want to offer your readers examples of the types of relics and how they were used. What purpose did they serve? Where were they kept? Who was allowed to have relics? Why did people value relics?
  • Keep in mind that your background information should be used to help your readers understand your point of view.

Step 5 Present your claims and research in an organized fashion.

  • Remember to use topic sentences to structure your paragraphs. Provide a claim at the beginning of each paragraph. Then, support your claim with at least one example from one of your sources. Remember to discuss each piece of evidence in detail so that your readers will understand the point that you are trying to make.

Step 6 Consider using headings and/or subheadings to organize your paper.

  • For example, in a paper on medieval relics, you might include a heading titled “Uses of Relics” and subheadings titled “Religious Uses”, “Domestic Uses”, “Medical Uses”, etc.

Step 7 Conclude your paper.

  • Synthesize what you have discussed . Put everything together for your readers and explain what other lessons might be gained from your argument. How might this discussion change the way others view your subject?
  • Explain why your topic matters . Help your readers to see why this topic deserve their attention. How does this topic affect your readers? What are the broader implications of this topic? Why does your topic matter?
  • Return to your opening discussion. If you offered an anecdote or a quote early in your paper, it might be helpful to revisit that opening discussion and explore how the information you have gathered implicates that discussion.

Step 8 Create your bibliography.

  • Ask your professor what documentation style he or she prefers that you use if you are not sure.
  • Visit your school’s writing center for additional help with your works cited page and in-text citations.

Revising Your Paper

Step 1 Give yourself adequate time to revise.

  • What is your main point? How might you clarify your main point?
  • Who is your audience? Have you considered their needs and expectations?
  • What is your purpose? Have you accomplished your purpose with this paper?
  • How effective is your evidence? How might your strengthen your evidence?
  • Does every part of your paper relate back to your thesis? How might you improve these connections?
  • Is anything confusing about your language or organization? How might your clarify your language or organization?
  • Have you made any errors with grammar, punctuation, or spelling? How can you correct these errors?

Step 4: Make Connections Between Your Observations, Experiences, and Opinions

Try to connect your ideas and insights to form a cohesive picture for your theme. You can also try to recognize and break down your assumptions, which you may challenge in the future.

There are some subjects for reflection papers that are most commonly written about. They include:

  • Book – Start by writing some information about the author’s biography and summarize the plot—without revealing the ending to keep your readers interested. Make sure to include the names of the characters, the main themes, and any issues mentioned in the book. Finally, express your thoughts and reflect on the book itself.
  • Course – Including the course name and description is a good place to start. Then, you can write about the course flow, explain why you took this course, and tell readers what you learned from it. Since it is a reflection paper, express your opinion, supporting it with examples from the course.
  • Project – The structure for a reflection paper about a project has identical guidelines to that of a course. One of the things you might want to add would be the pros and cons of the course. Also, mention some changes you might want to see, and evaluate how relevant the skills you acquired are to real life.
  • Interview – First, introduce the person and briefly mention the discussion. Touch on the main points, controversies, and your opinion of that person.

Preparing and Delivering a Seminar

Build a seminar around the main points you want to convey. make sure that each one is clearly, slowly and explicitly stated when it first arises during the talk. at the end of the talk, restate all of the points in a summary..

Here are some additional principles, practices, and tips for preparing and delivering seminars. Some of these ideas apply to writing papers, too.

  • Assume your audience is infinitely ignorant but infinitely intelligent. The audience will understand a clear, complete explanation. (Thanks to Barry Honig.)
  • Give a good introduction. A research report will be boring to everyone except an expert in your area unless you provide the context. Explain why what you are doing is interesting and important.
  • Never underestimate a person's pleasure in hearing a good presentation of what he or she already knows. Don't feel foolish providing background that your audience might be familiar with. And don't assume your audience knows a great deal more than you do, even if you are a graduate student and they are professors. They still need you to orient them to what you are doing.   • Keep your audience oriented. Make sure that they understand, at each step, why you are presenting each topic. If the audience becomes disoriented, you will lose their attention. Presenting an outline of the talk near the beginning can help. (Thanks to Marti Head.)
  • A talk should entertain. The best scientific talks entertain by giving people new ideas and perspectives. High-quality graphics can also help.
  • Present only one big idea per slide. This helps convey your ideas forcefully, and prevents the audience from reading ahead instead of listening to you. (The exceptions are the outline and summary slides.)
  • Never read aloud from your slides! A slide should support your talk, never substitute for it.
  • Avoid spending time on highly technical points. Unless it is a critical detail, it is acceptable to briefly state what was done and that it was reasonable, and add that you'd be happy to explain it in detail if anyone is interested. Then continue with the seminar.
  • Practice. Stand in front of a seminar room and present to an imagined audience or to a friend. Identify parts where you have trouble finding the right words and work on them. Make sure the talk is about the right length.
  • Benefit from other people's opinions of your talk. Parts of your talk may be less clear than you imagined. Even invalid criticism can be helpful: if one person thought your talk had an error, someone else probably will also, so head off future concerns by add a sentence or two to make your point clearer.
  • Pay attention to your audience when you're speaking . If everyone is watching you and listening, you are succeeding! If people look lost or somnolent, you may need to slow down, speak more loudly, and/or explain better.
  • When you are speaking, you are in charge. A talk can be badly derailed if you get into a discussion or debate with someone in the audience. If the discussion seems to have no end, say that you'll be pleased to continue the discussion after the talk and then resume.
  • Check the time occasionally during your talk. Adjust the level of detail and the rate of presentation so that the talk fits the allotted time.

  • Topic/ Theme. The seminar should address an issue or concern which will stimulate the interest of the participants. The topics must be “eye-catchy” to attract participants to join the seminar. It doesn't mean you've got to know absolutely everything about the subject, but you have to understand it well enough so that you can help participants fit it into the context of their own jobs and lives.
  • Audience. Audience is important in the event, who will actually be part of the seminar. Understanding them and their desires will help the presenter to decide what to do and how to do it. If you are presenting for a particular group, you can be able to find out from the participants what their experience has been taken and what they want from the seminar. In the other hand, if you propose what seems to be a solution to a complicated problem, they may be biased in your favor too. If you can present something new to be considered by the participants, you've done your job more than well.
  • Speaker. The speaker should be suitable for the chosen subject. The speaker should ideally be those who are in the field of agriculture or some well-known agricultural and biosystems engineer or agriculturist. The speaker should be someone who academically or professionally that have a knowledge of the topics chosen. The topics of the speaker should be able to arouse the curiosity and interest of the audience, that contributes the succession of the seminar.
  • Duration of time or event. Consider the available time of the speaker or audience. It is important that the time available matches the goal of the seminar. Seminars can range from an hour or less,this means not only planning your presentation to properly fill the time, but also matching the amount of material you are going to cover to the time available.
  • Budget. One of the most important aspects of seminar. Funding is an integral part of any event like seminar. Project the costs needed for hosting and determine how much you need to cover everything. Allocate the fund for the event and don’t overestimate or underestimate the costs for planning and preparing the seminar. To lessen the expenses, you might require the participants to pay for the registration fee to be used for refreshments and other necessities of the event. It's wiser to have an extra fund to address the problems that might arise during the event.
  • Venue. Select a suitable venue for the seminar. The venue should be able to comfortably accommodate the number of attendees when taking into considerations of the needs of the speaker, location suitability, service level, ambience of the venue, and the budget. Overview of the End of Course Exam

We've made it! The end is finally here.

And guess what, we've saved the easiest for last 💯!

The End of Course (EoC) Exam is putting to the test a lot of what you've done so far in the year. You'll see elements of the first four Big Ideas in all aspects of the EoC exam ✍️.

Overall, you should feel very comfortable doing what the EoC is asking you to do. It's pretty much a scaled down version of elements of PT 1 and PT 2 . Things like analyzing evidence, looking for line of reasoning, and arguing a thesis , all show up in the EoC.

Let's take a look at what you'll actually be doing along with some key points to take note of:

The exam is divided up into two sections

Three short answers questions 👌

One longer argumentative essay 👩🏾‍💻

You'll have two hours to complete both sections of the exam

You can complete the exam in any order that you choose

Before we dive into the nitty gritty, one thing to keep in mind is that the  rubrics  are short and to the point. This is great because it really highlights everything you need to do without getting too complicated. But, it can be tricky because there are so few points in the rubric so everything counts.

Alright! Let's check out each section.

Short Answer Questions

The first section that you'll see is the Short Answer Questions . Here you'll be given one argumentative article and asked to answer three questions.

The questions are:

  • Identify the author's main idea , argument, or thesis . 🤔
  • Explain the author’s line of reasoning by identifying the claims used to build the argument and the connections between them. 🗣️
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the evidence the author uses to support the claims made in the argument. 👨‍💼

These questions can be found in the  Course and Exam Description .

You do not need to get super fancy answering these questions. In fact, you should probably be able to answer the first question in just about a sentence. Again, make sure to read the rubrics to really understand how to get full points.

Let's go through each of these questions and talk about them. We'll be using the  2019 EoC Exam  as examples as we go through.

The first question asks you to identify the author's argument. This should be very simple! You are looking for the overall argument that the author is making.

Usually the author will have a thesis , but if they don't, just ask yourself what overall point the author is trying to make.

Keep in mind that you need to fully explain the author's argument. For example, take a look at Part A of the 2019 exam. The article is titled "Why the Voting Age Should be 17." You might read that and think "Oh! There's the author's argument." But, that is not the author's full argument.

Instead, you should explain why the author thinks 🤔 that. A more complete answer would say: "The author argues that the voting age should be lowered in order to increase voter participation, allow students to be more involved in their government, and strengthen the American democracy."

That answer still says what the title says, but goes in to way more detail.

In question 2, you need to analyze the author's claims and line of reasoning to determine if they support the overall argument the author is making.

Just like with question 1, you may be tempted to give an answer the doesn't fully answer the question. Do not just simply list the author's claims . Instead, you should work through each of the author's claims and explain how they either help or hurt the overall argument 🗣️.

It is better to write too much as opposed to too little here. Really, you should be aiming to write about a page or more.

The last question has you looking at the author's evidence. You need to evaluate its effectiveness in supporting the author's claims and analyze the credibility of the evidence.

Just like the claims , you should work through each piece of evidence the author gives, explain how well it supports the argument, and explain how credible it is 🤨.

I would recommend talking about the evidence as a whole. Is it all credible? Does some evidence do a good job of supporting the author's argument while others don't? This will help the question feel a little more organized and focused.

Long Essay Question

The Long Essay Question requires more time and planning than the Short Answer Questions . Generally, I recommend spending an hour and a half on part B.

Even though part B takes longer, what you are doing is fairly straight forward. Essentially, you are constructing an argument using two of four pieces of evidence that College Board provides.

All of the evidence is based around a central theme, but they all have different perspectives .

You are going to select two (minimally) of the four sources and present an argument that is not found in any of the sources. What this means is that if one source argues for 'A' and the other source argues for 'B,' then you need to argue for 'C.' Your argument should NOT 🙅🏽‍♀️ be the same as one of the pieces of evidence.

So, how do you write this thing? Here are the steps I would take to write the Long Essay Question.

  • Read ALL of the evidence carefully. Find the central theme that is presented. 📕
  • Think about what you want to argue that is different than the perspectives presented in the evidence. 👨🏽‍🏫
  • Select the two (or more) pieces of evidence that you are going to use. ✌️
  • Write your thesis ! ✍️
  • Outline your essay, making sure to note your claims and how you connect your evidence to them. 🗒️
  • Write, write, write! You should be well prepared to write without stopping to think about the direction your essay is heading in. 📜
  • Read and revise if necessary‼️

A few things to note... College Board knows that you are writing on a topic that you might not be well informed on. They also know that you will only be using two pieces of evidence. Because of that, this does not need to be the most airtight argumentative essay you've ever written.

That being said, it should have all of the components of a good essay.

In Conclusion...

The best way to prepare for the End of Course exam is to read the rubrics and practice! You can find all the past exams along with sample responses and scoring notes  here . Use them to your advantage! Read the responses that scored high grades and recognize why they did well.

But just remember, you have been using these skills all year! You know how to do this. Be confident and don't stress!

Ethics is not about people following what they see others do but it is about about making sound decisions on their own. Ethical studies are aimed at ensuring that students are able to act on their own without being influenced by factors such as the environment or their peers. Ethical studies also helps individuals to be able to make arguments and reason with facts about what they face in the daily lives. According to the catholic church, human life is considered sacred and the dignity of the human beings is the beginning of a moral foundation for the human race. This belief is the heart and foundation of all the rules that govern our social teachings. It has been determined that the human life is under attck from various factors such as abortion and euthanasia. on dignity. Apart from the above named reasons, there are various other causes of threat to human life such as hunger, natural calamities and terrorism. These have been considered the most pressing issues and some of the biggest threats to human life. Many countries have tried to join forces in order to ensure that they fight theses threats and get rid of them. this has also proved to be a matter of contention among people who feel that the developing countries are taking too much from the developed countries. Critics argue that it is not the responsibility of the developed countries to always support the developing countries. It is true that it is not their responsibility to help the developing countries but it is also true that as human beings, we have the moral responsibility to be helpful to each other. It is in our nature as humans to have good relationships with each other. That is what makes humans different from animals. It is unlike humans to be hostile to one another. Help is essential to everyone and even the developed countries at some point need assistance. This is not to say that they must help the developing countries, it is up to the leadership of country to decide what they do with their resources. According to the catholic teachings, it is essential for humans to work together to fight the problems that threaten its existence and peace. Human life is more important than other things and that is the reason it should always be protected and nurtured to its fullest. Unneccssary deaths that can be easily avoided are not supposed to be given a chance in the society.
