Statement of Purpose – Sports Management

I am applying to your Master of Sports Management program with the goal of building upon my previous experiences and preparing for my career. I studied Sports Medicine in the university due to my longstanding interest in sports. When doing my internship at the local YMCA, I had the chance to learn about health promotion for the elderly, and I came to see that this industry is poised for considerable growth. From this experience, I understand that the best way to keep elderly people healthy is to focus on preventing accidents or diseases. Unfortunately, there is a scarcity of professionals in this industry, and this is why I hope to acquire a more thorough understanding of sports management in your graduate program, as I hope to fill this gap and become a pioneer in this field in my native country.

My university studies give me a good foundation of knowledge on which to base more advanced studies. Through core courses I have learned a lot about sports protection, fitness and weight training, as well as taking optional courses related to sports management. Meanwhile, I was also very active in extracurricular activities in order to build a broader perspective and more practical skills. For example, I was active in the Student Union, I joined the school orchestra, and I served as a Teaching Assistant in my department as well as a leader in the department’s Sports Medicine Camp. In addition, I was a member of the Sports Service Society, and I collaborated with other members to help with elderly fitness drives and sanitary education in remote areas.

As mentioned above, my career goals began to really take shape during my one-year internship as an Administrative Assistant at the YMCA. My core duties there included organizing and implementing conferences and teaching certificate lessons. I was also responsible for promoting activities, contacting students and teachers, and arranging various activities. For instance, I planned many free elderly health-related activities in cooperation with the local municipal government, including an International Elderly Day with hundreds of student volunteers and drives to measure blood pressure and encourage the elderly to be active and explore nature. In the process of working on these events, I developed my leadership and organizational skills, and I have gotten a taste of what I expect to do for my future career.

Now, I believe that I am well-prepared for the challenge of going overseas and studying Sports Management at the graduate level. I previously worked as a research assistant at Goodwell Medical University’s Institute of Neuroscience, and I thus have experience at integrating, collecting and analyzing data, which will help with my postgraduate dissertation. I am eager to contribute my knowledge and experiences to your classes and research projects while also learning from the many talented students and professors in the program. After completing my studies, I hope to gain a place in a governmental sports institute in my native country, where I aspire to raise awareness about the benefits of sports for people of all ages, and especially the elderly.

My ultimate goal is to combine sports with elderly fitness promotion in order to essentially make a new industry. I want to build elderly communities and set up service stations for the elderly to help them have care service even in their own homes and organize activities periodically to replace the present elderly care centers. That way, the elderly can maintain their relationship networks through exercise. Accomplishing these goals will require advanced management abilities, and I thus find your master’s program an ideal setting for my further studies.

For length, a personal statement should be brief ranging somewhere between 500 -700 words, although schools often detect how long it should be. So, this is dependent on the institution you are applying to.

Master’s, sport management (master's) - how to apply.

Successful applicants to the Master's Sport Management programs in Educational Leadership generally have completed the following:

• Listed in online application as Education: Sport Management (MS)
• Select an event in sport that has pushed you to examine your beliefs about sport and explain the impact that event has had on your future
• Describe the characteristics of an exceptional manager by examining someone whom you have observed or with whom you have worked. Illustrate how their management style has influenced you
• Earned sufficient credits to be eligible for consideration
• Accumulated sufficient experience related to the sport industry
• Written a two to three page, double-spaced personal statement. Statements should elaborate on the applicant’s educational background, professional and volunteer experiences, and qualifications for the program. Applicants should also speak to why they believe the UConn program is the right program for them and why they are a good fit for the UConn program
• Requested three letters of recommendation submitted on applicant’s behalf. Letters should be submitted as PDFs on professional letterhead with signature and be no more than two pages in length each. At least one of the letters must be from academic references, and the others can be from professional references. Letters should address the context in which the writer knows the applicant and his/her opinion of the applicant’s ability to succeed in UConn’s program

• We are no longer requiring or accepting GRE scores for our master's programs.
• There are no pre-requisite course requirements for either the Movement Science or Sport Management master's programs. Requirements for the Athletic Training master's program are outlined on the Athletic Training Admissions page .

MOVEMENT SCIENCE AND SPORT MANAGEMENT MASTER'S APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

1. letters of recommendation.

Three (3) letters of recommendation in support of the student's application must be submitted. These letters should ordinarily be from professors at the student's last degree-granting institution. Recommenders must complete their recommendations online. When the applicant registers the recommenders' names in the Rackham application, an email is automatically sent with a link to enter the recommendation online. Applicants should check the status of their recommendations on the Rackham website status page.  Additional details on the Rackham website,  Letters of Recommendation  page.

2. Transcripts

We require one scanned or electronic official transcript uploaded to the online application for all undergraduate and/or graduate programs in which you have received a degree. If you have not yet completed your baccalaureate degree, you may submit a current (in-progress) transcript now and a final transcript showing degree conferral upon graduation.

3. Academic Statement of Purpose

The Academic Statement of Purpose should be a concise, well-written statement about your academic preparation, practical experience, and/or research background related to the area(s) within Kinesiology that you’re interested in studying. It should also include your career goals and how Kinesiology's graduate program will help you meet your career, and educational objectives.

The following information is required on the header of your Academic Statement of Purpose:

• The title "Academic Statement of Purpose"
• The name of the graduate program
• Your 8 digit U-M ID (if known)

4. Personal Statement

The personal statement should address how your background and life experiences, including cultural, geographical, financial, educational, or other opportunities or challenges, have motivated your decision to pursue a graduate degree at the University of Michigan. For example, if you grew up in a community where educational, cultural, or other opportunities were either especially plentiful or especially lacking, you might discuss the impact this had on your development and interests. This should be a discussion of the journey that has led to your decision to seek a graduate degree. Please do not repeat your Academic Statement of Purpose.

The following information is required on the header of your Personal Statement:

• The title "Personal Statement"

5. TOEFL/IELTS (academic test scores).

• TOEFL/IELTS scores are required for all applicants whose native language is not English, regardless of your educational experience.
• The University of Michigan code for the TOEFL/IELTS is 1839. (The department code is not necessary, since the GRE and TOEFL/IELTS scores are automatically added to applicant records as long as name and birth date can be matched.).
• The  Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)  or  International English Language Testing System (IELTS)  is required of all non-native speakers. The University of Michigan requires a minimum TOEFL score of 84 for admissions (Internet Based TOEFL), or 6.5 for IELTS. (For other English test minimum scores, please refer to the Rackham website.)

MVS and SM Master's FAQs

1. Are there course prerequisites for enrolling in the Movement Science or Sport Management master's programs? No. There are course requirements for the Athletic Training master's program, though, and they can be found on the AT Admissions page .

2. My undergraduate major was not in Kinesiology, but I am very interested in pursuing a master’s degree in Movement Science or Sport Management. What should I do? We accept students from all different types of undergraduate majors – we prefer a diverse cohort of students. Sometimes we ask students to take specific courses to help them attain the level of knowledge we would expect to ensure successful completion of our program. There are no specific prerequisite course requirements.

3. Do you have a GPA minimum requirement? All applicants should report their Grade Point Average (GPA) on page 5 of the online application. The GPA should be reported using a standard U.S. four-point scale. Applicants who attended an institution outside the United States should follow the instructions to convert their international average grade point to a U.S. four-point GPA (see "How to Convert Grades to a U.S. GPA" on the Scholaro website ).

4. Do you accept the GRE? We are no longer requiring or accepting GRE scores for the master's program.

5. Do you have minimum requirements for the TOEFL/IELTS (academic) test scores? Your Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score should be at least 84. We also accept International English Language Testing System (IELTS)  (academic test) scores in place of the TOEFL. The minimum IELTS is 6.5. We require your most recent TOEFL or IELTS from all applicants whose native language is not English, regardless of their educational background.

6. I am an international student. Do I have to submit a TOEFL/IELTS (academic test) score if I received my master’s degree at an English-speaking university? You must submit your most recent valid TOEFL/IELTS (academic test) score regardless of your educational background or Rackham requirements. There are no exceptions.

7. Is a master's thesis required? The master's thesis is an option and is not required. However, if you intend to go on for your PhD, it’s strongly recommended.

8. Can I transfer credits toward my program? Once you have been admitted and complete one successful semester, you can petition to transfer up to 6 credits toward your degree. All transfer credits must be approved by the graduate chair.  View Rackham's transfer policy on their website .

9. Does the University of Michigan offer distance learning for the graduate program? No, we do not offer distance learning for any of our graduate programs.

10. What’s the difference between Rackham Graduate School and the School of Kinesiology? The School of Kinesiology is one of the 19 schools and colleges at U-M. Our graduate program is co-administered by the Rackham Graduate School. Rackham oversees the requirements and procedures and certifies the admission recommendation as appropriate.

11. How much does it cost to attend graduate school? View the U-M financial aid estimator tool  on the U-M financial aid site.

12. What funding opportunities are available? Although we do not have assistantships available at the master's level, admitted students can apply for incoming student scholarships. Scholarship information can be found on our Graduate Awards & Funding page .

13. Will I have a faculty advisor? All admitted students will be assigned a faculty advisor based on their area of interest.

14. How do I view my admissions decision? You can view application decisions online by following directions outlined on the Rackham Admissions page .

15. Should I come visit? Visiting U-M and the School of Kinesiology is a good idea, so that you can get a feel for the faculty and students, as well as the Ann Arbor area. If you’d like to visit, email Graduate Student Affairs  ( [email protected] ) with a convenient day and time. They will set up a meeting and email you the details. Let them know if you would like to meet with current students while you’re here.

17. Does the School of Kinesiology offer a Strength and Conditioning program? No, we do not have courses or degree programs in Strength and Conditioning. Our movement science focus is injury prevention and rehabilitation, sport medicine, biomechanics, exercise physiology, health and fitness, and/or motor control and development.

18. Do you offer application fee waivers? In a brief e-mail, provide proof and explain how you meet all criteria for a fee waiver. Fee waivers are limited and are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Submitting Your Transcripts

For your application to the online master’s in sport management program , you will need to submit an official transcript from every college or university you have attended, even if a degree was not ultimately earned.

Transcripts are only considered to be official if they arrive in a sealed envelope from the college or university, so you should request the university to send your transcript to the University of Kansas directly.

Any submitted transcript that has been issued directly to the student will only be accepted if the envelope is unopened—once the envelope seal has been broken by someone other than a KU employee, the transcript becomes unofficial. Although unofficial transcripts may be submitted for initial review in the admissions process, your admission will be considered provisional until the official transcript is obtained and verified. Official transcripts are required prior to the 2nd semester. An enrollment hold is placed on students who do not have official transcripts on file and they won’t be able to enroll for their second semester.

About the Letters of Recommendation

From the recommenders you select to the skills they can vouch for, your letters of recommendation represent a vital part of your application and can help you create the strongest possible application for the Admissions Committee.

When it comes time to selecting the two references you want to write your letters, strive to provide one letter from a current or former supervisor, as they can speak to your business acumen combined with your personal traits and characteristics that will help make you successful.

If you can’t think of a supervisor to use as a reference, don’t worry—academic references also make strong letters of recommendation as well. Letters of recommendation from family, friends or other non-professional or non-academic references will not be accepted.

Because the application is online, your letters of recommendation are collected and stored via the online application system. Your references will receive an emailed link with instructions to complete and submit their recommendation and survey, so they don’t have to worry about postage and you don’t have to worry about anything getting lost in the mail.

Sport and Exercise Science Personal Statement

I have always immersed myself fully in the world of sport , whether that be through playing it myself or keeping up to date with developments, results and inquests through news articles. The sporting world is an exciting yet demanding aspect of today's society, with the ability to unite nations by providing a global language which everyone can understand, regardless of nationality, ethnicity or religious beliefs. Its importance can be appreciated through observing its valuable contribution to communities and the economy, as well as to the individuals who participate. Sports science has the capacity to push an athlete's body to the limit both physically and through the use of technology.

My interest in the science of sport started at a young age when I became intrigued by how the body works during exercise. My A-Level subjects of Biology, Physical Education and Business Studies have further fuelled my interest in this area, allowing me to extend my scientific understanding of how body systems operate, as well as introducing me to the commercialisation involved, and the relationship between the media and sport.

Studying PE has allowed me to develop a deep understanding of the theoretical underpinning of sport, ranging from sports psychology, to the biomechanics of musculoskeletal movement. Biology has allowed me to become more confident with practical laboratory work and mathematical skills, as I have gained experience of devising and carrying out investigations and using statistical analysis to assess the significance of my results. Many of the areas covered over both of these courses intertwine with one another, meaning I've been able to reinforce my knowledge in areas such as the anatomy of the human body and physiological processes, such as those involved in the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. In particular I enjoyed investigating ways in which the human body responds to exercise and ways in which injuries can be prevented or rehabilitated.

I have been involved in a host of sporting activities ranging from an inter-school downhill skiing event, club football, and school rugby matches, which I have played competitively for 5 years. After studying the muscular system at A Level, I took up weight training to aid my performance in my main sports, which are rugby and football. I am determined to pursue them further in the future and I am looking forward to playing sport at a higher level at university. I have always believed sport to be a positive challenge and a chance to socialise and meet new people as well as the chance to be part of a team. With rugby being my chosen sport in PE, I have been involved in a volunteering programme at my school. This has allowed me to work alongside teachers to enthuse and encourage young children in the hope that they too will share the same passion for sport. This experience has developed my leadership skills and I am often required to demonstrate the correct technique for certain movements.

I have assisted in developing a programme in order progressively to build on their confidence when performing and to educate them on the rules of rugby. This has allowed me to advance my communication skills and understand the importance of simplifying key ideas into smaller components to aid understanding. I have developed my teamwork skills through decision making and problem-solving in group situations. With this in mind, I feel I can positively contribute to lab work and discussions surrounding sport. I am also a self-motivated person with an ability to persevere without necessarily needing encouragement from others. The way the Olympics has united countries and their motto- 'citius, altius, fortius' or 'faster, higher, stronger'- has encouraged people to strive for their full potential. I look forward to studying and researching ways to drive athletes to achieve their maximum performance.

Sports and exercise science personal statement example.

From a very early age i had a profound interest in sports, participating in teams such as the school football team and the local Sunday league team. I also enjoyed swimming and Tae Kwon Do, achieving gold in swimming and black belt in Tae Kwon Do. I was also in the cross country team and cricket team throughout senior school.

It was during my time at senior school I discovered my passion for science and the reasoning for everything we come across in life. The human body is of particular interest with how it functions under sporting activities and how it recovers after rigorous workouts.

I am currently studying an Access to Science course which covers Biology, Physics and Chemistry. This is giving me the fundamentals to progress on to higher education covering topics such as the musculo-skeletal system and the human endocrine and nervous system which I find fascinating. In addition to this course i regularly attend events at a friend's studio gym where i have gained knowledge about various aspects of maximising potential when training. These include nutrition, motivation and weight management, without compromising health and energy.

My goal in life is to become a Physical Education teacher, having three children of my own has made me realise that there is nothing more satisfying in life than watching children develop new life skills or improving on existing skills and putting these in to practice. The career of a Physical Education teacher would enable me to have a satisfying career knowing that they are taking away skills that they will use for life. It will also enable me to lay the foundations for a healthy life something I feel extremely passionate about.

Although I haven't worked in this field before, I have gained many other transferable skills for my chosen career such as leading a team, communication, respect for the public, confidence, strong organizational skills and to be a good role model.

I see myself as a very active person. In my spare time I enjoy reading, one of my favorite books is Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of time" I must say he is an inspiration, I find it fascinating how a man with such a severe illness can still achieve what he has. He has taught me many things but the most important being that anything is possible! I enjoy going to the gym, helping out with my sons Sunday league football team and road running.

With my determination, motivation and enthusiasm, I have no doubt in my mind that I can go on and have a successful career as a Physical Education teacher.

The program focuses on sport career advancement related to sport business and administration, both for-profit and non-profit organizations. Sport management is one of the fastest growing fields of study in the country, which focuses on the business of sport including marketing, finance, media relations, sport sociology etc. The Georgia Southern graduate program is perfect for people who are 1. currently working in the sport industry, are 2. working as a graduate assistant that is focused on a sport business, or 3. someone considering a career change to working in the sport business industry. The plan of study considers the busy schedules of full-time employees and encourages intertwining content-based discussions and activities with students’ employment and work experiences.

• Provide a writing sample explaining “What does the field of sport management mean to you?” Then highlight or explain a current trend/issue in the management sport. The statement should include an in-depth explanation indicating your knowledge of the academic perspective of sport management. Candidates need to clearly show and explain their understanding of the business of sport management, not their personal goals in the field. The written statement needs to be a minimum of one page double-spaced but no more than two pages.
• Provide transcripts showing the completion of a Bachelor’s degree in a college or university accredited by the proper regional accrediting association. If applicant holds additional degrees or classes from accredited institutions, those transcripts must be submitted as well. The committee will review previous coursework that relates to the curriculum in the Master’s in Sport Management program.
• A minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5 is required to be considered for admission into the program. An undergraduate GPA between 2.5 and 2.99 may result in admission with provisional status. Obtaining a GPA of 3.0 on a master’s degree or at least 12 graduate credits may be assessed on the basis of master’s-level degree work.
• Resume will be used to review the quality of work experience and length of related professional experiences/internships.
• Applicants should prepare a professional video that is one-to-two minutes in length. The video needs to address Who you are, your goal from the sport management program and how it will help pursue your career, and why you want to get this degree. You will need to add your YouTube video link in the graduate application. The video MUST be uploaded on YouTube. How to Upload a YouTube Video:  *Note that the video must be less than 2 GB in size and less than 15 minutes in duration to upload. The Graduate Admissions Committee will judge the merit of each item and make a recommendation based on the sum total of the application.

Amongst the tens of talented athletes I coached, I fondly remember Barkya.

A prodigy in wrestling, he would frequently weave tales about his future, each one illustrating his dream of representing India in international tournaments. Ambitious, yes, but they would always conclude with the same question, “How do I make it come true?”. Barkya’s family hailed from the Dhangar community, the shepherds residing in Western parts of Maharashtra, and made just enough to get by, lacking the resources to support him in his dream. As days went by, I found myself increasingly gravitating towards Barkya and hundreds of other kids like him.

Being a native to the drought-prone village of Gondawale in Maharashtra and having gone through a fair share of perplexities myself, the struggles faced by the children spoke to me on a deeper level. Their stories ignited a spark of continual motivation in me and illuminated my eventual purpose in life—aspiring to pilot an international sports exchange program for promising kids and managing professional athletes.

From spending hours in the sun, playing cricket in the streets of my village with no solid sports infrastructure to being an overseas amateur at a cricket club in Oxford and visiting the UK and USA to meet existing sponsors of Manndeshi’s program, touring athletic facilities, and conducting meetings with charities such as the Cherie Blair Foundation, I have been devoting persistent efforts to actualize my dream. To strengthen my knowledge and achieve prowess in the same, I seek a Master of Science in Sports Management from Loughborough University.

  I graduated with an Arts degree in Economics from Fergusson College, Pune. Along with displaying academic rigor and executing projects, I exhibited a strong inclination towards extracurricular activities as well. Pertaining to sports, I served as the captain of the college cricket team for two years, winning a state-level championship and securing third place in the university’s championship, and competed in a state-wide pistol shooting championship in Mumbai.

  Soon, I started working as an Assistant Cricket Coach at PYC Hindu Gymkhana; my primary responsibilities entailed scouting for young talent, analyzing statistics of different players, importing statistics of recruiting players, and orchestrating practice sessions. Slowly I progressed to working at Manndeshi Champions, where I am entrusted with coaching tribal athletes and have guided over a thousand of them, with 30 qualifying to the national level in their respective sports choices. In addition to supervising the logistics of the program, I anchor incident management abilities in the rural areas of Maharashtra and initiate marketing prospects for the organization of marathons, using government schools as sports awareness centers.

  With the acceleration provided by the Master’s degree, I plan to attain exposure to the sports industry in the UK. By thorough commitment to equip me professionally, I aim to gain an appreciable experience and establish connections in the country, ultimately leveraging the same to commence an exchange program for tribal athletes in India as well as emerge as a reputed manager for international athletes.
