How to write a circus fantasy – character, setting, magic

Circus celebration

Celebrate the end of a month of frantic writing.

carousel, gallopers, circus, fairground

The circus: Ride the gallopers, including this chicken on a steam-powered carousel

Why are circuses and fairs so fascinating? Why do people run away with the circus? And why do we love a circus fantasy story so much? I think it is because in olden times, the circus was almost the only travelling organisation you might hitch a ride with. There were others – army recruiters, roaming bandits, tax collectors –  but the circus was the only one worth fantasising about. Nobody ever ran away with the taxmen. On this basis, then, let’s explore the elements you need to write a magical fantasy about a circus or travelling fair.

I’m basing this on having read quite a few circus books, most importantly short stories by Ray Bradbury, plus Erin Morgenstern’s  The Night Circus – and watching The Greatest Showman . There’s also a circus-escapee in X-Men – Nightcrawler – wonder if he ever encountered PT Barnum – or, perhaps, Wolverine in his pre-Logan days…

Onto my must-have circus fantasy elements:

Ringmaster . Must have a fabulous costume and extravagant manner. Female or male. Cape, tight trousers, top hat, whip, military coat optional. Common descriptors: fierce, magnificent, cunning.

Collection of rare persons. Whether these are characterised as freaks, mutants or valued performers will depend on the story’s setting and worldbuilding. These people are among the circus or travelling fair’s prime acts and will probably include-

steam wagon, circus wagon

Steam wagon, Lancashire 2015

Giant strongman. Likely to be found in a strappy vest and tight breeches. Possibly Italian, almost always foreign of some kind (depending on where is ‘foreign’ to the story). He may be a gentle giant or he may be quick to anger. Common descriptors: mountainous, accented, moustachioed.

Fortune teller. Many opportunities for prophesying and mystery here. The fortune teller, almost always female, sits in her small, round tent and dispenses sinister predictions which can come true in a good way, or, usually, in a very bad way. The fortune teller is often the only middle-aged female character in the entire story, so make the most of her. Common descriptors: headscarf, tasselled, talons.

Bearded lady, mermaid in a tank, tattooed man, tiny person, etc.  The acts are a source of comedy or pity, depending on the circumstances of their joining the circus. Perhaps they escaped poverty and humiliation and have made a fortune. Or perhaps they were hunted by pirates, trapped in a net and brought to the fair to sing for a living. They may be genuine magical /mythical creatures, or they may be total frauds who peel off a fat suit and an extra head every night. Common descriptors: pitiful, fascinating, defiant.

The big top. Pic from wikipedia commons.

Waif/Runaway/ other Outsider. This character sees the circus through fresh eyes and is handy for describing things all the other characters would be familiar with. Might be the protagonist. Common themes :  befriending ill-treated animals, sleeping among the straw bales, and montage-learning many skills.

Mirrors. The hall of mirrors that warps and distorts you – Neil Gaiman, many others – and offers entrance, willing or unwilling, to another world ( Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. ) From Sleeping Beauty to Alice Through the Looking Glass , mirrors compel the heroine or hero to look at what’s reflected, and they may not like what they see.

Showman’s wagon, pic from glamping website (linked)

A train . There is a deep cultural image of an enormous, cowcatcher-fronted steam locomotive chuffing across the landscape towing colourful cars. I found out that this even happened in Britain , which surprised me as I thought they moved exclusively by road –  by wagon, steam-towed showman’s wagon (see the pic for glamping in one of these…) and in modern times, by truck. But no, British circuses moved by train too. There’s a circus train in Dumbo, and Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes . Trains seem mysterious, arriving unannounced in the night, then stealing away after the show, clanging mournfully (another thing trains don’t do over here.) But in reality, it’s far easier for a road-based circus to arrive by stealth, since wagons don’t need, you know, rails. Common themes: steam, night, roaring/trumpeting from wheeled cages.

Sand . A touch of the desert abounds inside the circus ring. They must have carried tons of sand around with them. Common themes: animal footprints, blood, the ringmaster cracking a long whip against the sand.

Tent. A striped big top is a frequent image of a circus tent, or alternatively, a giant white series of swoop-crested tents. They’re all good, and of course, highly portable. The huge wooden pole propping the centre ridge must have seemed like a ship’s mast, and the canvas, the sails to another world. Sideshows might have their own tents too. The lack of solid walls makes them ideal for slipping in and out of unseen.  Common themes: flaps, lightbulbs on guy ropes, flags.

The circus by night

Magic . Every circus, every fair, holds the promise of Real Magic hidden in plain sight among the acts. This might appear as genuine levitation fuelling the conjurer’s act,  steampunk mechanoids gaining  a life of their own, true prophecy in a crystal ball, or an epic battle for good or evil played out across the Dust Bowl ( Carnivale .) This is a chance to explore unusual magicks and crazy backstories. It can be as bizarre as you like, because if you can’t go wild in a circus, when can you?

Country setting or city setting. The circus travels, by definition, so it can be in a windswept prairie, on a pier beside the seaside, or filling a town square. You can put your circus anywhere you like.  I haven’t even mentioned   Indian circus,   clown college, Dagestan’s knife carrying tightrope school or any of the other circus-related settings you could choose. Put your circus in an imagined world. Put it in space.

Other common items in circus fantasy: little drums for animals to stand on; runaways,  often hidden in animal cages; trapeze artists and acrobats who perform tremendous feats of daring; night time; ropes and stakes – good for murder weapons and high-level chases; brightly-coloured lightbulbs and other newfangled technology, especially in sinister forms such as speak-your-fortune machines or mechanical dolls . Lightbulbs often explode at key moments, penny tarot machines tend to speak a portentous truth. Tassels and bunting , usually on tents but often on horses and in plumes on performers’ headdresses; and, although these form a subgenre all their own, clowns . I need say no more.

Include some or all of these elements and you’re on your way to a circus fantasy story. In a circus setting, things quickly become surreal and the impossible is everyday. With a literally movable feast and a cast of anything-goes characters, nothing constrains you. Whether you go medieval, Gothic, Victorian, 1920s, Depression, wartime, Sixties or contemporary, a circus fantasy is bound to please.

Circus stories:

The Singing Mermaid  by Julia Donaldson. Watch out, it’s a tear-jerker of a bedtime read.

The Night Circus.  by Erin Morgenstern Fantastic gothic setting and memorable magic.

Smoke and Mirrors by Neil Gaiman

Something Wicked This Way Comes , by Ray Bradbury. For me, the original circus fantasy. It’s Dark though, pun intended.

A Goodreads list of circus books.

A TVTropes list of circus tropes in popular culture plus, related, details on The Circus Episode of many popular shows. Remember that X Files one?

And here’s one of my own.

Related: gypsy fiction, which I mention in this post about cards and spells.

Do you love the circus?

circus description creative writing

I’ve had a circus story on and off the back burner for a year or so. Mine is less magical and more practical but now I’m wondering if throwing some magic into the dust might spark it up some. Thanks for the reds too.

I worked on a piece surrounding a state/county fair when I was in college. I’ll have to dust that off and re-visit it. I love reading about circuses, but I haven’t come up with anything in my head.

Hi Laura, thanks for commenting! I think there’s magic in writing about fairs/circuses (also gypsies, theatre, and old style markets…) – whether you write ‘fantasy’ or not. If you do revive your piece I’d love to see it – it’d be great to share/link to some other writers’ stuff on my blog!

Awesome! I want to finish my current WIP first, but I will definitely keep that in mind. Thanks! Also, I go by Laura Beth, not Laura 🙂

Circus Writing Prompts

July 5, 2021 by ami Leave a Comment

If you have reluctant writers, or creative writers who are writing simple, shallow stories, try this set of circus writing prompts .

The circus writing prompt cards provide guidance with the writing process. This is important for students who feel like they don’t have any good ideas.

What’s Included in the Circus Writing Prompts?

This printable file includes six task cards and six pages of matching stationery.

circus description creative writing

Each task card includes a creative writing prompt with a story title on one side of the card and a series of questions on the other.

The file includes:

  • Instructions for how to use each prompt over a three-day writing process. This includes prewriting, drafting, and editing. I would recommend that you ask your student to write one (and only one) story per week.
  • 6 circus writing prompt cards
  • 6 circus story stationery pieces to match the task cards The stationery includes the same title prompts as the task card s.

The questions are provided to cause the writer to think about his or her writing throughout the prewriting process.

Through the prewriting, the writer will generate ideas that include setting, character, and conflict. Including these three short story elements helps your student craft an amazing story.

How to Use the Writing Prompt Cards

Assembly: Print the cards. Cut out cards. Fold them in half on the dotted line. Glue together. Repeat with all the cards. Laminate for durability , if desired.

Suggested Use:

  • Day One: Let your student choose one task card. If possible, read through the questions with your student and discuss ideas. Give the student a piece of paper to scribble all of his or her ideas. This prewriting process can be called a “brain dump,” and it can be a place where the student answers the questions on the chosen writing prompt card.
  • Day Two: Ask your student to write a draft of a story.
  • Day Three: Review the draft with your student. Tell him what he has done well and give him a few suggestions. Have him write his final work on the stationery page provided (the one that matches the prompt card).

Note: If your student is not familiar with setting, conflict, or plot, I would review these short story elements before giving him his first story writing prompt card.

The circus atmosphere is thick with energy, from the ecstatic cheers of children to the pulsating beats of circus music.

Diving into the details, writers can capture the artistry of performers, their gravity-defying stunts, vibrant costumes, and the very spirit that keeps the audience at the edge of their seats.

The radiant glow of the circus tent, the scents wafting from food stalls, and the myriad of expressions on the audience’s faces can paint a vivid picture.

In sum, when describing a circus, writers should immerse readers into its magical realm, letting them experience the highs and lows, the laughter and gasps, and the overall enchantment that only a circus can offer.

Creative Prompts #4: Circus

' src=

I haven’t been to the circus for a very long time, although the Great Moscow Circus was in town recently. I have, however, discovered a writing competition in which the first prize includes a month’s residency at Berlin’s Circus Hotel . The theme is, naturally, ‘the circus’.

Whether you’re as tempted as I am to enter the 2019 Berlin Writing Prize, or looking for some inspiration to create a piece of artwork, or you simply recall a childhood memory of visiting a circus (or being terrified of the clowns!), I hope you’ll find something here to inspire your creative muse this month.

The writing competition is not for young writers, but these prompts are for anyone, whether you’re 6 or 96.

circus description creative writing

1. Random Words

Okay, so one of these words is not so random.

Use the following five words as a stream-of-consciousness warm-up exercise, or create a story or piece of artwork which includes them.

circus description creative writing

2. Life’s a Circus

Have you ever heard someone express, possibly with exasperation, ‘This place is circus’, or even ‘Have you seen the clowns in the place?’ I sometimes wonder if there are clowns sitting in parliament in Canberra, but perhaps that’s being too insulting to clowns …

circus description creative writing

3. Opposite sides

Ever wondered what it’s like to ‘walk in someone else’s shoes’? Or wondered about the truth in the notion ‘the grass is always greener on the other side’?

circus description creative writing

I only have vague memories of visiting the circus as a child. Instead, most of my recollections of the circus and its performers have come from books, such as Katharine Susannah Prichard’s Haxby’s Circus , which I won as an English prize at school, and even earlier memories of Enid Blyton stories.

How about you? Do you remember visiting the circus?

circus description creative writing

5. Research

Sometimes researching a subject can be as much fun (in my case I often prefer it) than the actual writing. Here’s your chance to disappear down the research tunnel for a while.

6. Family History

Do you have an ancestor who may have experienced visiting the circus when it was in town? Or perhaps you actually come from a long line of performers, whose stories have remained untold.

If you live in Australia, searching in the Trove newspaper database might offer up some information about what circuses were in the town or city of your ancestors.

circus description creative writing

7. Circus with a Difference

What do you imagine when the word ‘circus’ is mentioned? What have circuses been like in the past? What might a circus of the future look like? How might the notion of a circus be twisted in some way in a dystopian world?

circus description creative writing

In this pack, the child is asked to work through a series of exercises to practice: retrieving information, punctuation, simple, compound and complex sentences, first and third person, connectives and parts of speech.

The child is asked to plan a circus story, developing their ideas under headings. They should use the prompts to develop further ideas and write a story with a beginning (introducing characters, setting and plot), a middle and an ending.

Next, they should write an argument voicing their opinion on whether they agree or disagree with animals performing in the circus. After this, they should make an acrostic poem.

This series of work packs provides prompts to encourage children to write. It provides starting points, to encourage even the most reluctant writers. Featuring a lively, ‘magazine style’ format to appeal to children of all abilities, these packs are particularly recommended as preparation for creative writing tasks at 11+ or S.A.T.S.
