Thunivu movie review: Ajith Kumar is full of swag in fun heist film that doesn’t take itself too seriously

Thunivu movie review: ajith kumar stars in one of his most entertaining performances since mankatha (2011). the tamil film also stars manju warrier and john kokken..

H Vinoth’s Thunivu, his third consecutive film with Ajith Kumar, is a modern-day companion piece to Shankar’s 1993 film Gentleman. Thunivu, unlike Gentleman, doesn’t take itself too seriously and thankfully that’s what makes it a largely entertaining film, which after a long time allows Ajith to have so much fun with a character. In spite of some rough edges, especially how the film does lose its purpose in the second half, Thunivu holds good for most part because of Ajith’s wild performance of a character that’s both a hero and villain. Also read: Manju Warrier reacts to ‘fun trolls’ worried about 'not hearing her voice’ in Thunivu song Kasethan Kadavulada

Thunivu movie review: Ajith Kumar in a still from the Tamil film.

The film opens with a gang making an elaborate plan to rob one of the biggest banks in Chennai. The plan is to execute a heist worth ₹ 500 crore, which the bank has stashed beyond the permissible limit of ₹ 1000 crore. Everything goes as planned and the gang succeeds in taking control of the bank along with a large group of hostages. However, trouble comes in the form of one guy who decides to fight back, only to take control of the bank from the gang. That guy turns out to be Ajith, who plays a nameless character. Ajith earns the trust of the gang and makes them work for him. He promises each one of them a cut from the ₹ 5000 crore bank money he plans to rob. As Ajith puts his plan in motion, his two-member team which also comprises of Manju Warrier , is quietly pulling strings on the outside. The rest of the story is about what is Ajith actually doing inside the bank and does he really plan to rob it.

As long as Thunivu plays out like a heist film, it’s super entertaining and a lot of credit for that goes to Ajith, who makes his anti-hero character so charismatic with his screen presence. But the film isn’t just a heist film as it also features a subplot that serves as a social commentary on a pressing issue. As much as it tries to shine the spotlight on the issue, it also raises pertinent questions about the negligence of the general public. Luckily, it doesn’t get too preachy with the message it wants to convey. Apart from the detour it takes in the second half to drive home its point, Thunivu stays true to its genre of heist action. It has some cool, slightly over-the-top action stretches that work to a large extent. But it’s the character of Ajith, who oozes swag from the word go, which makes this one of his most entertaining performances since Mankatha (2011).

With each collaboration, H Vinoth has managed to bring out something refreshing with respect to Ajith’s performance. In Thunivu, he doesn’t have any qualms in making Ajith play a mastermind criminal with no ethics. Manju Warrier, too, gets a role that she has so much fun with. The film does fumble towards the end, when the action feels underwhelming but the film has enough moments to keep one invested. Ghibran’s background score suits the mood of the film really well and so were his songs.

Film: Thunivu

Director: H Vinoth

Cast: Ajith Kumar, Manju Warrier and John Kokken

Thunivu Movie Review: H Vinoth Brings Out Ajith Kumar's Career-Best With Brilliant Content!

Brilliant screenplay from h vinoth with proper proportion of mass elements makes thunivu so special not only for ajith kumar fans but also for the general audience. police department and press are exposed enough..

Thunivu Movie Review

The film directly lands into the story without unwanted hype for Ajith Kumar. When the audience start thinking that it is a normal bank robbery story, director H Vinoth clearly says 'NO' with a swag. His choice of content is always too good and his political knowledge paved the ultimate way for audience to enjoy power packed film.

Mai Pa

Brilliant Screenplay from H Vinoth with proper proportion of mass elements makes Thunivu so special not only for Ajith Kumar fans but also for the general audience. Police department and press are exposed enough to make the audience laugh out loud at the theatre. It's a perfect Pongal treat for Ajith fans. Though there are some logical loop holes, Vinoth tried his best to cover up with a justification. His efforts in bringing the film with a socially responsible content is just tremendous. Bangkok segment with Bigg Boss celebrities looks a bit forced. Set work is too bad for such a big budget film. But the story and the brilliant writing makes us forgot everything.

Thunivu

John Kokken scores well after Sarpatta Parambarai as a perfect Villian. Bagavathy Perumal, the press person Mai Pa, Bala Saravanan and Mahanadhi Sekar did a great job in comedy sequences. Mai Pa remains special with his subtle and natural performance throughout the film. He will definitely get a lot more character roles in Tamil cinema after Thunivu. Samuthtakani resembles the popular police officer Sylendra Babu in many places with his unique body language and dialogue delivery.

Thunivu

Ghibran's background score is not bad. Manju warrier did a neat character with enough mass scenes. Nirav Shah portrayed the massive Ajith Kumar through his lenses. And finally, the man of the match, Ajith Kumar stuns everybody with his extra-ordinary acting. His voice modulation blends perfectly for the script. H Vinoth brings out the best part of Ajith Kumar for the consecutive Third time.

Thunivu

Never expected such a good content based film from Ajith Kumar as a Pongal release that too clashing with Vijay's Varisu. Thunivu will stand out for its brilliant presentation and H Vinoth easily comes into list of top three most wanted directors of Tamil Cinema. Every hero would love to work with him after watching Thunivu. As the film says NO GUTS NO GLORY! Great work H Vinoth and team!

துணிவு Review: மாஸ், மெசேஜ், ஹெய்ஸ்ட்... ‘நிறைவு’ கிட்டியதா?

Thunivu Movie Review: Bullets and bombs fail but the dialogues don’t

Thunivu Movie Review: Bullets and bombs fail but the dialogues don’t

Rating: ( 3 / 5)

How much you like Thunivu depends on how much you are willing to forgive its weak portions—and of course, how much you have missed seeing Ajith Kumar enjoy breaking bad. When he screams, “This heist is MINE!”, close your eyes and you can almost hear him shout, “This is MY f****** game!” Much like in that landmark film of his ( Mankatha ), here too, Ajith Kumar plays a character who’s eager to come across as a villain. There, that’s another AK reference. To make matters easier for him, one of the characters—who is perhaps not too familiar with AK’s filmography—even asks him a pointed question: “Are you a hero or a villain?” Ajith, knowing how much we enjoy him being ‘bad’, dances about with a machine gun, unabashed in his execution of a bank heist. “ Ipdi makkal panatha kollai adikkariye. Vekkamaa illa? ” some hapless hostage asks him. Another star playing this character might have responded with a few dialogues to justify his actions, some persuasive speech perhaps to convince the hostage. AK, playing Dark Devil, simply replies, “Illa.” I spat out my Coke in laughter. Director: H Vinoth

Cast: Ajith Kumar, Manju Warrier, Samuthirakani, John Koken

But each time the film steps into action—and it happens a lot, especially in the first half—I kept wishing that they had ‘written’ the stunts better. In an eagerness to sometimes overwhelm us with music (which doesn’t quite do enough to sell ‘mass’ moments in this film), and of course, bullets and guns, filmmakers often tend to overlook the importance of telling a story through action. So, what we get is AK casually walking towards seasoned criminals armed with guns, and casually ducking and spraying bullets at them. And with all due respect to his many appeals, agility isn’t one, and so, it all feels a bit too easy. There are no memorable visual ideas either to make you feel invested.

Meanwhile, Vinoth quietly begins to set up the atmosphere. He introduces us to an overwhelmed constable; a corrupt inspector; two journalists—one new and ignorant, the other aware and corrupt (a funny, dark character called Mai Pa); a rare, righteous senior police officer (Samuthirakani)… There’s variety here, but more importantly, Vinoth shows some real understanding of the symbiotic relationships that sully the system: the police and the politician, the police and the journalist… And yet, given how long we spend inside the bank and given all the seeming urgency and action, it was hard for me not to get restless and wonder whether AK’s Dark Devil, who the music keeps referring to as a ‘gangsta’, has any real point or purpose. Or is he like The Joker, a dog chasing cars, not knowing what to do with one even if he caught one?

The film makes more than one reference to the ‘joker’, in fact. Truth be told, after The Dark Knight , it’s hard not to think of the  Joker any time a maniacal man seems to be involved in a bank heist. And I think the Dark Devil definitely qualifies as a rather unhinged man—and occasionally, he can be seen wearing a mask too. However, Thunivu moves on into more serious spaces after the interval, and it’s here that I think it truly finds itself. This is when H Vinoth’s strengths come to the fore. This is also when the film subverts ideas on who’s good and who’s evil—and at one point, even attacks all of us for not really caring about morality, in the face of entertainment. Where Samuthirakani’s policeman speaks of the financial system being a protective entity, one responsible for spreading a lot of ‘good’ in our society, Thunivu goes on to reveal its uglier side as well. Credit cards offer you a long, free window in which to pay back your debt, but what’s the catch—and more importantly, who’s the catch? Under the guise of respectable jobs, how do otherwise well-meaning people make money?

From the outside, Thunivu may seem like it’s about one man’s attack on a bank, but the film is really about his defence. The attack is instead by a larger, complex system— full of those tasked with ensuring our welfare including politicians, financial entities, police officers and the media—and the victims are, well, us. If AK’s Dark Devil is a villain, what do we call all those corrupt authorities? Who’s the bigger evil really—a terrorist or a system that fabricates such narratives to quietly, profitably terrorise countless lives? When Thunivu digs into these spaces, you see how H Vinoth can be quite enterprising.

Where a Theeran Adhigaram Ondru played a part in vilifying an already persecuted group of migrant workers, you can see the filmmaker’s willingness to learn and evolve—and that’s heartening. In this film, very quietly, he captures the prejudice of a Tamil man towards a North Indian waiter. What truly comes through Thunivu is that H Vinoth cares, and I think that augurs well at a time when we could do with braver voices willing to take on oppressive systems. That’s why Samuthirakani saying, “ Idhu Tamil Nadu !” feels so powerful. And that’s also why that whole lengthy portion in which AK’s Dark Devil interviews three high-ranking officials—who are really scammers—turns out to be both educative and so entertaining. It’s probably among the rare instances when I didn’t exactly flinch from a lathi landing (which must still make us uncomfortable, of course). Even here, Vinoth is careful to point out the hypocrisy of how the police handles a Rs. 500 theft, as opposed to a Rs. 500 crore financial crime.

All the action needed to be written better (I enjoyed what Manju Warrier does in the film though); the flashback needed to be less manipulative; a song like Chilla Chilla needed to be edited out; the final action flourish, with all the ships and helicopters, needed to be less tiresome; the film’s end needed to be punchier. And YET, I enjoyed certain spaces in Thunivu —like how it’s not easy to decide whether the Dark Devil does what he does for good—or for revenge. As AK says, “You asked for God. But God sent the devil.” Such smart moments make it hard to be unforgiving of Thunivu , even despite all the flab. For every forgettable exchange of bullets, there’s a dialogue that’s fiercer. Like when a bad guy asks AK for forgiveness and he retorts, “But your CIBIL score is low.” That there is violence worth the price of the ticket.

H Vinoth's 'Thunivu' has a good premise for a heist movie but the writing does not match up

Thunivu Movie Review

Thunivu Movie Cast & Crew

In his recent interview with Galatta Plus, H Vinoth said that he doesn't care as much about the "story" of his films as the "information" he can deliver about the milieu the narrative is set in. But ironically, the best part of Thunivu – apart from Nirav Shah's very classy cinematography – is that story. You think it's a heist. And then you realise it's a heist within a heist. And then… let's just say there's a third layer. Had this premise been developed to its fullest, this would have been a cracker of a thriller instead of the generic Shankar-style vigilante action movie it ends up being – give or take a few updates from the Gentleman template. Ajith sports a white shirt, a white beard, and his stylish statement "this heist is mine" may be one of the coolest mass moments of the year.

But who is he? Who is the character played by Manju Warrier, who has fun breaking out of the heavy roles she usually gets? They call each other "partner". Are they just mercenary business partners or is there something more? How do they manage to evade the approximately 75 million bullets fired at them in an action sequence? They kill cops at will, and yet they do good? Why? I get the feeling Vinoth feels more comfortable with inhuman processes – like how mutual funds can harm people – than in flesh-and-blood people. And this is both a plus and a minus. On the plus side, it is refreshing to leave a relationship undefined, and let the audience make it out to be whatever they want it to be. But conversely, it's hard to really get into a film without feeling or caring for anyone at all.

I never expected H Vinoth to get into the "corporates are evil" zone that some of our Tamil filmmakers love so much - but here he is, using a heist story to give us an exposé of the banking system. Again, the plot points – that is, the components of the "story" – are interesting as concepts. A long interview-like scene, for instance, is a great idea to tell us that if a heist is being done in the bank, then the banks are doing a bigger heist on people. The reason for Ajith's character to get into this space is also well thought out: it's a job he refuses when offered to him but then takes up himself after a discovery. But beyond a point, these concepts are not interesting enough on screen because they are rushed through, and the frantic editing makes you feel you are watching the film at 1.5x speed.

Some of the action is not bad, but these scenes are less effective than they should be because of the non-stop slo-mo that keeps reminding us that this is all just wire work. Samuthirakani plays a cop, who really should have had a much bigger part to play in the proceedings. (But you could say that about everyone.) At least, apart from Ajith's fan service (including a moonwalking bit), the film is tonally uniform, which helps to maintain the mood. But by the end, Thunivu is further proof that these big-star movies are really a kind of IIT entrance exam for directors. You put in a ton of hard work, you spend sleepless nights, you mug up all the formulas, but at the end, only a select few slip through.

THUNIVU MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

Thunivu is a film written and directed by H. Vinoth and produced by Boney Kapoor under the banner Bayview Projects in association with Zee Studios. The film has Ajith Kumar and Manju Warrier in the lead roles while Samuthirakani, John Kokken, GM Sundar, Dharshan, Mohana Sundaram, Bagavathi, and others in supporting roles. The music is composed by Ghibran while the cinematography is handled by Nirav Shah.

A heist takes place in a bank in Chennai and minutes later, the attackers are taken down by Ajith Kumar, who in turn decides to rob the bank. The rest of the film deals with the intention and backstory behind Ajith's heist and whether it is successful or not.

Right from the first frame, director H. Vinoth is clear about what he wants to do with a superstar like Ajith and gives us a banger of an intro that would send any audience into a frenzy. Especially Ajith imitating Michael Jackson and dancing inside the bank are moments that make you hoot and whistle. The entire first half is filled with such sequences.

However, once the second half begins, the film starts unloading a lot of social information on the audience while the entertainment takes a backseat. There are only a couple of songs so that doesn't disturb the film's flow much, but the screenplay could have been more engaging in the second half. Thunivu also runs out of twists a little early making the fag end of the film slightly predictable.

The second half is filled with guns, guns, and more guns, but a little emotional connection would have been better. There's a subplot involving Darshan, and that tries to emotionally appeal to the audience. However, the issue that's being addressed takes centerstage and leaves no room for other elements.

Ajith breeds swagger in every frame and the action sequences pack a punch. This could easily be one of the best roles written for him after Mankatha. It was refreshing to see Manju Warrier not being reduced to a romantic partner, but instead having her own moments throughout. The rest of the cast, Samuthirakani and GM Sundar in special make their presence felt.

On the technical front, Ghibran's background score works really well. The couple of songs that appear are catchy and the Gangsta theme is better along with the visuals. Nirav Shah offers a high visual quality with his frames and is one of the pillars of the film. The way a few sequences are choreographed by Peter Hein deserves praise.

Overall, Thunivu has enough in the first half to satisfy Ajith fans and families while the second half could have been handled better comparatively. As of now, the film ends up as a good watch for the festival.

Violence & Scariness

Violence is rife. Explosions, shootings, and stabbings result in many deaths. Lots of choreographed fighting with people flying through the air. Someone's fingers are shot off. Someone's knees are shot. A man is thrown from a building; it's reported as suicide. His head bleeds onto the sidewalk. People are doused with gasoline by police officers and set afire. Their charred remains are seen. A small boy is held over machinery to threaten the boy's dad. Bombs are strapped to hostages. Men are trapped under a secret floor panel with a bomb; it goes off. Cars and buildings are bombed. A boat is sunk, its occupants presumed shot and drowned as a fleet shoots and pursues, with helicopters strafing from above. Someone seems to be extorting a police officer over a sex tape with a college student.

What's the Story?

Although not told in any particular order, the events in THUNIVU are left to the audience to piece together. A dashing, smiling thief known as the Dark Devil (Ajith Kumar) is asked to organize a bank heist. He turns the job down, leaving the criminals to hire another gang. Some police officers are in on the heist, and bank owners and executives, too. It all quickly goes awry in a bank full of hostages, guards, dirty cops, journalists on the take, and a rival gang that kills the original robbers and takes over the crime. The upstart robbers are led by the Dark Devil, who originally turned the job down. But we don't learn that fact until later when, through a series of flashbacks, it's clear Dark has figured out what's really going on. He knows that the people involved in the original heist are corrupt and leverages his knowledge. By the end, the difference between good guys and bad guys is fuzzy, leading to the lingering question posed here: "Who the gangsta?"

Is It Any Good?

Thunivu i s a gargantuan mess, a flashy heist-social-commentary-dance fest. Director-writer H. Vinoth relishes the stylish, almost comic Deadpool -type pace and nonchalance, but he matches it with the plot's incoherence and overly ambitious reach to create something only watchable for its magnificent insanity and incomprehensibility. This feels like a heist movie parody, like a 146-minute SNL skit. The misguided direction relies on unwieldy flashbacks seemingly inserted to explain multiple overlapping stories that each weigh down the story in their own different ways. In the end, we must ask why the heist was planned at all, given certain facts divulged at the end.

The shootings that go on and on, fueled by seemingly limitless ammunition, explosions, fistfights, martial arts displays, dance sequences, singing, and plotting, all cancel each other out to result in a boring sludge of excess. Despite a dashing and engaging lead character played with cheek and charm by the singing, dancing, machine gun-toting Ajith Kumar, nothing in the three or four individual movies that live within this two-and-a-half-hour muddle seems worth the monumental investment of effort, time, and money. The English subtitles seem a bit off as well -- for example, as robbers keep talking about "looting the bank."

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about how the movie's length affects the audience's concentration on the many story threads, flashbacks, subjects, and characters.

Singing and dancing are a staple in Indian movies. How do choreographed dances enhance or detract from the audience's view of the rest of the action -- a bank robbery, shootings, chases, bank fraud, etc.?

How is violence treated here? Do you think that choreographing violence, setting it to music, and playing it in slow-motion glorifies the violence? Why, or why not? What are other ways of showing violence on-screen?

Thunivu movie review, release LIVE UPDATES: Ajith’s film opens to mixed reviews

Ajith-starrer thunivu movie review, movie launch live updates: ajith kumar's film thunivu is one of the most-awaited films of tamil cinema. the film is expected to face stiff competition from vijay's varisu which has also released on january 11..

tamil movie review thunivu

In what is touted as one of the high points of Tamil cinema in 2023, Ajith Kumar’s Thunivu has clashed with Vijay’s Varisu at the box office. Trade experts predict a box office war this week between the two films. The two actors, Ajith and Vijay, are superstars in their own right, and it will be interesting to see how the two films will fare at the box office.

Thunivu is a heist thriller that has Ajith essaying the role of a bank robber. The trailer had him taking a bank hostage and demanding a huge sum. Unlike his previous ventures, Ajith seems to be playing a grey character in the film. It also stars actors Manju Warrier, John Kokken, and Samuthirakani. The movie has music by Ghibran.

Watch the trailer of Ajith Kumar’s Thunivu here:

The director of Thunivu, H Vinoth had earlier told indianexpress.com , “Thunivu is a multi-genre film with songs, comedy, fights, and everything you expect from a commercial film. To put it one line, it is a game of the wicked.” Thunivu marks Vinoth and Ajith’s third collaboration. The actor-director duo have earlier worked together in Nekronda Paarvai and Valimai.

Thunivu has received a good advance booking in Tamil Nadu . Film trade analyst Ramesh Bala shared on Twitter, “Excellent adv booking for both #Thunivu and #Varisu all over TN.” Speaking about the big box office clash between the two films, he also told Pinkvilla, “It is like Avengers and Avatar’s clash in Hollywood and Salman Khan -Shah Rukh Khan in Bollywood.”

Here are all the latest updates about Ajith's film Thunivu

Thunivu is largely entertaining as long as it stays cold and dark, and as long as Ajith walks, dances, and screams like a maniac. The moment it sobers up, it loses its wicked charm. Read More.

Boney Kapoor shared a teaser of Ajith's film and wrote, "#Thunivu is all yours ?? Enjoy the festive season with family and friends??."

As per reports, both films are getting 80-90% occupancy in early shows. But the clash also means a share of the market, so the collections of both films might not be huge. It is a long extended weekend and holiday period so these Pongal releases can take advantage of that but it will depend on how Thunivu and Varisu are received.

A case has been reportedly filed against Vijay and Ajith fans for violating rules in Puducherry. A complaint has been filed against both fans for putting up banners without permission in areas including Annasalai, Thirammalai Adigal road. 10 cases were registered against Vijay and Ajith fans in various police stations.

Ajith and Vijay's movie shows will have the Tamil version of Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham's Pathaan trailer.

#WATCH | Chennai, Tamil Nadu: Fans of actor Ajith Kumar and of actor Vijay burst firecrackers, dance and celebrate outside a movie theatre as they gather to watch the former's #Thunivu and the latter's #Varisu Both films have released on the same day after 8 years. pic.twitter.com/3YKX2gtMRe — ANI (@ANI) January 11, 2023

Both Ajith Kumar and Vijay's fans were seen bursting firecrackers, dancing and celebrating outside a movie theatre as they gathered to watch the films Thunivu and Varisu.

The Ajith fan lost his life during the Thunivu movie celebration in Chennai. ANI reported, "Bharath Kumar, a fan of actor Ajith Kumar, who jumped in excitement from a slow-moving lorry succumbed to injuries on Poonamallee highways near Rohini theatre, Chennai. Case registered. He had come to watch Thunivu film's 1 am show at the theater: Police officials."

A fan @CinemaWithAB tweeted, "Appreciation post for #AjithKumar?? His swag, style, screen presence, dialogue delivery etc...everything excelled with his extraordinary efforts?? Personally felt this is the best performance of #AK in recent years?#Thunivu".

Shows for both Vijay and Ajith's films Varisu and Thunivu, respectively, began at 1 am and 4 am. As the fans gathered in large numbers, police had to lathi-charge at several locations. After Ajith's fans tore down a banner of Vijay's Varisu placed in the theatres, Vijay's fans also tore many banners of Ajith's Thunivu. This has stirred up an on-field battle between both fan clubs, and police officials came in to calm the situation.

Ajith stars in a decent heist film that is weighed down by generic tropes. The setup of Ajith and H Vinoth’s heist film is intriguing, but when the director finally shows all his cards, it’s not the royal flush one would want it to be.

Ramesh Bala shared his view for Thunivu and tweeted, "#Thunivu [4/5] : #AK 's attitude.. Dialogue delivery.. Action.. 360 degree action sequence.. The way he handles guns.. All 3 songs.. More than ticket price worth..Money message is a bonus."

Which movie will you watch on January 11? #Vijay #Ajith — Indian Express Entertainment (@ieEntertainment) January 10, 2023

Ramesh Bala, the box office tracker, says, “If Varisu and Thunivu had come out as a solo release, both the films would have earned about Rs 40 to 45 crore on the opening day in Tamil Nadu, but now, with them coming together, I think each one would earn around Rs 20-25 crore on the first day.” Read More.

Talking to indianexpress.com, H Vinoth shared that Ajith doesn't like his fans promoting his movies. He just wants them to watch his films and enjoy. Vinoth shared, "Ajith is okay with fans doing certain things for fun. But, he believes that they shouldn’t spend all their time just doing such things. He just wants them to watch when a new movie comes out and celebrate it. But, they shouldn’t abuse anyone using a film. Cinema must be just a part of their lives and not life itself."

Talking about his association with Ajith Kumar, filmmaker H Vinoth told indianexpress.com, "Ajith doesn’t have the airs of a star. He behaves with everyone like a common man. On the sets, he will be like a man next door. We both have a comfortable relationship. We have mutual trust.”

Filmmaker Boney Kapoor, who has co-produced Thunivu, wished that the audience enjoys the film as much as they enjoyed making it. He told DT Next, "I hope you all go to the theaters to watch and enjoy the film as we have enjoyed making the film. I hope the film becomes successful as the team has worked very hard. Ajith and Vinoth have given their best. Manju Warrier has looked glamorous and has given her best. Let's hope everyone's good work is applauded.

The director of Thunivu, H Vinoth shared his two cents on the box office clash between Ajith's film and Vijay's Varisu on Thursday. He told indianexpress.com, "It’s in the hands of the fans to keep it (competition) healthy. Two films are coming out and there is a long holiday for the Pongal festival. People, who have money, can watch both films. Otherwise, they can select one film and watch it."

Film trade expert Ramesh Bala has shared on Twitter that Ajith Kumar's film Thunivu is leading in Tamil Nadu both in terms of screen count and advance bookings. He tweeted, "#Thunivu leads all over TN..Both in screen count and in adv booking.."

The fans of Ajith in the USA are all set for the release of Thunivu. The production house, Lyca Productions shared pictures of promotional vans of the film stationed outside Indian restaurants in Dallas.

The Tamil Nadu government has cancelled the 4 am and 5 am shows of Ajith Kumar's Thunivu from January 13 to January 16. Also, the fans of the actor will not be allowed to anoint milk on the banners of the film placed outside the theaters.

tamil movie review thunivu

Speaking about working with Ajith for five years in a row, H Vinoth told indianexpress.com, "I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. It is pretty comfortable for me, so why not? To put it even more bluntly, the hero is giving me a chance to work with him for this long. So, I took it. Also, with any professional relationship, there will be small arguments and misunderstandings. Sometimes, his suggestions were right and sometimes mine were. But it comes down to trust. The belief that he has in me, and vice versa."

Thunivu Movie Review: Thala Ajith Serves His Fans What They Asked For, But If They Make This A Hit Then They Really Deserve This!

The story is exactly like the office's iconic dialogue: "sometimes start a sentence, and don't even know where it's going. just hope find it along the way.".

What’s Good: Thala Ajith serving his fans what they had asked for, because if they go on to make this a hit then they deserve this!

What’s Bad: A day before watching this film, one of my ears stopped hearing anything going deaf and now I know why!

Loo Break: Second half is a land of opportunities

Watch or Not?: Only if you can watch a film just because of one hero!

Language: Text

Available On: Theatrical Release

Runtime: 145 Minutes

Post a hurried & abrupt explanation as to why a Bank named ‘Your Bank’ has to be looted for 500 crores by a group of professional gangsters. They face the ‘Dark Devil’ inside the bank who’s also there to loot the bank but for 2,000 crores (because he’s Thala Ajith & the lead actor won’t loot the same amount as petty sidekicks).

Darkdevil puppets the gangsters to his tunes & is one step ahead of the police force outside the bank as well. How the second half remodels itself into a ‘social message’ film from being a broody dark-humour heist thriller is where the rest of the story unfolds.

Thunivu Movie Review: Script Analysis

H. Vinoth’s story had such a strong potential to be a crackling one throughout but suffers from the second-half syndrome of letting a tight pace go all haywire. Things just happen for the sake of giving closure to the already-dragged narrative. The story is exactly like The Office ‘s iconic dialogue: “Sometimes start a sentence, and don’t even know where it’s going. just hope find it along the way.”

Nirav Shah’s cinematography captures the ‘fan-service’ portions of the film with style but doesn’t really do much apart from that keeping things extremely basic. The action, on which the entire film capitalised, isn’t as great as one would hope for. The slo-mo sequences are too slow to even talk about most of them.

Thunivu Movie Review: Star Performance

Similar to Pongal 2023’s other release, Varisu, even Thunivu falls victim to the same complaint of relying too much on your lead i.e. Ajith Kumar in this case. We totally understand fans are going to see their favourite star on the big screen, but they want more than that. Thala Ajith roaring like a tiger & even moonwalking like Michael Jackson would’ve been accepted if the story around it would’ve been written stronger.

Manju Warrier restricts herself to playing the mysterious role of female presence in Ajith’s Darkdevil’s life. Unfortunately, she couldn’t rise more than that despite having all the scope of her character being written with a spin-off twist. Bagavathi Perumal as Anthony brings in a few laughs here and there, along with Mohanan Sundaram who plays the role of a journalist Mai Pa.

Thunivu Movie Review: Direction, Music

As a filmmaker, if you’re on a course to make a bank-heist film, you will take a good portion in the first half to explain the ‘WHY?’ part of the planned robbery. But, H Vinoth decides to take the entire film by injecting little pieces of information about why the heist was actually planned. His attempt at genre-jumping from first half to the second half doesn’t really give any fruitful returns.

Ghibran’s music fails to match the level of swag enamored by Thala Ajith. Apart from asking “Who’s da gangsta?” in a track, Thala doesn’t get a single tune to link his character with.

Thunivu Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, despite Thala Ajith’s a little exaggerated and gutsy performance, makers fail to cash in on the proper story by falling into their own cliched tropes of ‘masala’ cinem a.

Two and a half stars!

Thunivu review: A festive treat for Ajith’s fans but offers little to moviegoers

A reasonably rewarding affair!

Director Vinoth’s Thunivu is an action thriller that impresses in parts. The film is all about a bunch of crooks who hatch a plan to rob a bank.

They know that the bank they are planning to loot is holding on its premises a sum of ₹1,500 crore, as against the permissible limit of ₹1,000 crore.

And hence, they believe that the bank will not lodge a police complaint if they pocket this illegal sum.

However, when they attempt to rob the bank, they are in for a nasty surprise as they realise that somebody else is already in the process of looting it! What happens then forms the story of Thunivu .

As is evident, the movie revolves around a bank heist. However, it can best be described as a film that equally belongs to both its director Vinoth H and its lead star Ajith Kumar.

The first and second halves

The first half has as much action as the second half. However, there is a major difference between the one before the intermission and the other post-intermission.

The first portion belongs to Ajith Kumar. It focuses more on putting the hero’s character on a pedestal and thereby looks to please his fans. While it is sure to thrill his fans, it has very little to offer the common audience.

However, the second half is what makes Thunivu what it is. In fact, the second half saves the day for it. It is interesting and clearly bears the stamp of director Vinoth’s class on it.

Also, it is the second half that shows the director’s ability to research well and his understanding of complex economic issues. It shines the light on financial scams and makes it easy for the common man to understand how financial institutions can con them.

Noteworthy performances

There are four outstanding performances in Thunivu . Ajith as the villain, for the most part in the film, impresses. He, particularly, scores in the scenes where he is seen questioning the bank chairman on live TV.

Manju Warrier as Kanmani delivers a powerful performance. She has little to do but impresses whenever she appears on the screen.

The third impressive performance comes from Bucks aka Bagavathi Perumal who plays a police inspector named Rajesh.

cast of thunivu ajith vinoth h

The cast of H Vinoth’s ‘Thunivu’. (Twitter)

Bucks and well-known orator Mohanasundaram, who plays senior journalist Mai Pa, provide some much-needed comic relief in the movie.

Samuthirakani as Commissioner Dayalan, too, comes up with a neat performance. So does John Kokken who plays villain Krish.

Thunivu has a lot of action sequences but most of it is just fancy stuff that is aimed at glorifying the hero’s character — Dark Devil.

The background score is loud and adds to the cacophony on quite a few occasions.

In short, the film works in parts but the parts that work come at the end of the film. If you have patience for it, Thunivu can be a reasonably rewarding affair.

Thunivu Review - A Hurried yet a Decent Actioner!

Thunivu Review - A Hurried yet a Decent Actioner!

Thunivu - A hurried yet decent actioner!

Thunivu is an action thriller starring Ajithkumar and Manju Warrier in the lead roles. It is directed by H.Vinoth and the project is bankrolled by Boney Kapoor jointly with Zee Studios. Music is scored by Ghibran.

A gang of thieves headed by Ajith Kumar decide to rob a bank. What’s the reason behind it and what happens in the execution of their plan forms the crux of the story.

Writing/ Direction

The film opens up in an unapologetically hurried manner without registering what is going on properly. The speed is as such we are left clueless, it takes quite some time for us to settle and absorb the happenings. Once it is done, the film is quite engaging, it also has some timepass commercial moments. The film happens predominantly at a bank that's being robbed, a perfect fit for this genre is to be focused and stick to the content. Not that it doesn't do that, but does a lot of fan service as well. Thankfully the core flashback, which conveys the main theme of the film, is good and the general public will instantly connect to it, but the couple of backstories with the hero and gang as central characters are disappointing. With H.Vinoth directing it, it is sad that there’s absolutely no logic, however he has passed this time with flying colours in terms of execution, unlike Valimai which was terribly presented. There are definitely some appealing moments here and there, but no high points to excite the audience. A few sequences outside the bank are weakly written, especially the climax is a bummer. Something or the other is constantly happening and it doesn’t bore out much, the crisp runtime adds up to the film’s advantage. Also, the second half is somewhat better than the second half, as we get to involve more as the reasoning is revealed.

Performances

Ajith Kumar is in the recent best of his looks, his hairstyle and beard suits him amazingly well. Such a jovial and uber-cool presence by the star who enjoys the most and plays baddie roles. Nothing much in terms of characterization for Manju Warrier, but she does get some mass high-speed shots with guns. Samuthirakani and G.M.Sundar have some prominent roles to play, nothing fulfilling though. Mohana Sundaram as the press reporter is a valuable addition, he has brought in some situational humour.

Technicalities

Chilla Chilla is a fun dance number and an agmark theatre-friendly moment for the fans to enjoy. The other songs are strictly average. Background score is intense and he has musically leveled up the action sequences. But the mixing goes haywire, the score is so loud and the dialogues are lowered. Very neat cinematography by Nirav Shah, it’s totally opposite to the inconsistent Valimai , quality stuff by the experienced cameraman. VFX team has also delivered the goods properly without damaging the visual experience. Vijay Velukutty’s editing is fairly decent, cuts are racy but aren’t coherent, the overall runtime is a smart decision. Stunt choreography is a mixed bag, the fights are superlative, but the chases are flat.

Hurried rather than being racy, however it has a relatable backstory. Despite being extremely cinematic without any logic, the ‘constantly something or the other happening on-screen’ factor engages to an extent throughout.

Too much of unnecessary dialogues, stunt scenes that doesn't fit in and definitely didnt suit AK and songs that are seem off and easily forgotten both the songs & AK dance movies especially.
