Biomedical research

Aware that investments in Research and Innovation are one of the main drivers of development and could effectively contribute to revive the Italian economy and increase competitiveness, Fondazione Roma has in recent years paid special attention to biomedical research. The Foundation has launched Calls for Proposals for research projects since 2008. The projects are selected by means of the peer review process performed by internationally recognised experts, provided that they have never collaborated with the principal investigators before.

The Foundation allocated fifteen million euro to the first Call for Proposals, whereby grants were issued to support thirteen projects, submitted by the investigators of the Faculties of Medicine and Surgery in Roman universities, for research on highly topical issues of social relevance: Diabetes mellitus type 2, mechanisms of disease and macro-vascular complications; Cell Therapy and Regenerative Medicine and Drug design for the treatment of human infectious diseases.

Fondazione Roma subsequently decided to extend its commitment to biomedical research by allocating a further 10.4 million euro to research centres of excellence and issuing two new Calls for Proposals. The first concerned research projects that aim to understand molecular mechanisms and discover new therapeutic targets for chronic-degenerative ageing associated non communicable diseases (NCDs) deriving, in particular, from unhealthy life styles: Atherosclerosis and sequels; Metabolic disorders and sequels; Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and sequels; Alcoholic hepatitis and sequels; Osteoarthropathies and muscular atrophy. The second Call for Proposals aimed to update and acquire more knowledge in the underfunded yet crucial field of rare diseases, focusing on Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP). This rare disorder gradually leads to blindness and has been considered as a disease with significant social and economic implications since 1985.

At the end of a complex and strict evaluation process, the most worthy and promising projects were selected: five concerning Retinitis Pigmentosa and eighteen concerning Non Communicable Diseases.

As a result of these projects the Foundation has become one of the main private institutions to fund research of excellence in Italy. Even in this sector, other parties may refer to the Foundation’s original and efficient model when the community’s genuine needs and the Country’s interests are the main concern.

Department of  Systems Medicine

This particular department came to be as a result of a merger of three different departments which are, internal Medicine, Neuroscience and Public Health in the year of 2012. This was done in order to comply with the 204/2010 restructuring of medical schools to aid homogeneity of scientific research, training activities and general education. As a result of this merger, the reign of a new medical dynasty began, where advanced knowledge in the treatment of chronic-degenerative diseases, and the interaction between therapeutic approaches and diseases are more focused upon.

This medical school makes use of a teaching philosophy been referred to as “bedside-to-bench-to-bedside” . This teaching approach brings experience to the students and they are able to learn at their own pace. The same teaching approach extends to masters and specialist courses.

Application Procedures at the University Of Rome Tor Vergata

A good IMAT score is the most important qualification for a student who wants to apply for admission at the University of Rome Tor Vergata medical school. Although a B1 Italian certificate will be required when a student reaches the 3rd year of the medical degree. This is required to help students have smooth interactions with patients during their clinicals. 

For EU candidates, opportunities are endless here because the University of Rome Tor Vergata admission process is designed to embrace students from other parts of Europe. This gesture also extends to non-EU students as well. However, for non-EU students, the admission process is more complicated compared to the latter. This is due to the fact that as a non-EU student, it is mandatory for you to go through an Italian embassy in the country that you reside.

In addition to the IMAT test score, both EU and NON-EU students are to have their secondary diploma. With all things being equal, you will be on your way to Rome if finally offered an admission to study medicine.

It is crucial to remember that these scores are only the minimal standards, and given the intense competition, many students really get much higher grades. Therefore, it is advised that candidates aim for the maximum score in order to improve their chances of acceptance into this esteemed program at Tor Vergata.

Student Life in Rome

Campus life is incredibly vibrant and interesting at Tor Vergata University in Rome. Tor Vergata provides a broad range of activities, services, sporting events, and discounts for the benefit of its personnel and students. Additionally, Campus X, the primary student residence, is a dependable landmark for festivities and entertainment.

There are two big social groups within the University: ALET and ALITUR. ALET is interested in expanding its members’ opportunities for personal and professional development by using its ability to create connections and information. This will also help members become more aware of their “dispersed” cultural and professional heritage and feel more a part of the organization that provides their university education.  On the other hand, ALITUR was founded to create a network of former Tor Vergata School of Engineering students, instructors, and researchers in order to build up the association’s capital of expertise, which its members will gradually enhance.

The University of Tor Vergata lays a specific emphasis on giving its students the opportunity to go to illustrious locations including Cambridge, Yale and Iowa.

The Saharawi-Tor Vergata initiative, which gives students the chance to test their knowledge by using it in Africa, is one of their most exciting opportunities.

The time spent in the Saharawi refugee camps, which are currently situated in South-Western Algeria and come from Western Sahara, is around 1-2 weeks. New Science and Medical Research Hub Opens in Atlanta

Georgia Institute of Technology and the Trammell Crow Company are transforming Atlanta’s booming skyline with the launch of the first phase of Science Square, a pioneering mixed-use development dedicated to biological sciences and medical research and the technology to advance those fields. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for April 25. 

“The opening of Science Square’s first phase represents one of the most exciting developments to come to Atlanta in recent years,” said Ángel Cabrera, president of Georgia Tech. “The greatest advances in innovation often emerge from dense technological ecosystems, and Science Square provides our city with its first biomedical research district, which will help innovators develop and scale their ideas into marketable solutions.” 

Science Square’s first phase includes Science Square Labs, a 13-story purpose-built tower with state-of-the-art infrastructure to accommodate wet and dry labs and clean room space. To promote overall energy efficiency as well as sustainability, the complex houses a massive 38,000-square-foot solar panel. The solar panel system is in addition to an energy recovery system that extracts energy from the building’s exhaust air and returns it to the building’s HVAC system, reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Electrochromic windows, which tint during the day to block ultraviolet rays and steady the temperature while also controlling the environment — key in research labs — are also featured throughout the building.   

Equipped with technologically advanced amenities and infrastructure, Science Square Labs serves as a nexus for groundbreaking research, enabling collaboration between academia, industry, and startup ventures. Portal Innovations, a company specializing in life sciences venture development, is among the first tenants to establish operations at Science Square, as Atlanta takes center stage as the country’s top city for research and development employment growth. 

The opening of the complex’s first phase, just south of Georgia Tech’s campus and totaling 18 acres, also features retail space and The Grace Residences developed by High Street Residential, TCC's residential subsidiary. The 280-unit multifamily tower, already welcoming tenants, is named in honor of renowned Atlanta leader and Georgia State Representative Grace Towns Hamilton who spent many years championing this community.

Beyond its scientific endeavors, Science Square embodies Georgia Tech’s commitment to uplifting the local community. By collaborating with organizations like Westside Works, Science Square aims to empower residents through targeted workforce development initiatives and economic opportunities.  

“This mixed-use development adds immense value to Atlanta’s west side and will lead the development of pioneering medical advances with the power to improve and save lives,” President Cabrera added.
