Why study Communication?

What is a ph.d. in communication with an emphasis on social justice.

The Ph.D. in Communication at the University of Cincinnati gives students the opportunity to investigate the power of communication to shape our personal identities and impact our social, organizational, mediated, and political lives.

Given our location in the heart of the urban core of Cincinnati, as well as the mission of our department to explore and address social issues, much of our work emphasizes our value of social justice. We recognize the central role that communication plays in our understanding of key social justice issues (e.g., race, gender, health, environment, globalization-related, etc.) and in finding solutions to those issues.

As graduate faculty in communication, we have identified a trend that students approach communication studies from a social justice angle, and are seeking opportunities to advance academic training that prepare them to have a social justice focus in their research or praxis career trajectory. Through academic preparation and externship work, our program prepares students to lead positive change through academic, and applied work, or in professional careers through a blend of theory, research methodology, and practical application.

What are our focus areas?

  • Organizational Communication and Public Relations
  • Media and Cultural Studies, Traditional and Digital Media Effects
  • Health and Environmental Communication
  • Interpersonal Communication and Leadership
  • Culture and Globalization
  • Rhetorical, Interpretive, Critical, and Quantitative Methods

What are some of the advantages of this program?

  • Small classes mean you get concentrated attention from our  award-winning faculty
  • You can customize the program to your interests by choosing electives and independently working on a completion project tailored to your interests
  • Many of our full-time Ph.D. students receive a graduate assistantship (GA), a competitive assistantship that pays your tuition and provides a $16,000 stipend each year for four years. Most GA students teach their own sections of public speaking and consider it a highlight of their experience.

Common Questions

A Ph.D. in Leadership or Leadership Studies is a research doctorate that focuses on the theory and practice of organizational leadership. In many programs, students have the opportunity to study leadership within a specific field, such as education. In this case, you’ll explore how strategic leadership can help you effectively guide, manage, and improve educational organizations—from schools to colleges to nonprofits. Courses in subjects such as decision making, program planning and assessment, change management, and other skill areas will prepare you for leadership opportunities that call for advanced scholarship and expertise.

While many working educators opt to earn a Ph.D. in Leadership, these programs differ slightly from practitioner degrees such as the Ed.D. Namely, research plays a larger role in the Ph.D. You’ll take courses in research methodology, including qualitative and quantitative research methods, inferential statistics, and statistical analysis. And you’ll embark on an original dissertation that furthers the body of knowledge in your field.

With a Ph.D. in Leadership, you can pursue growing career paths in educational organizations such as schools, colleges, and universities. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that postsecondary administrator jobs will increase over the next decade as more students pursue higher education to achieve their goals. Postsecondary administrators bring together expertise in organizational management and education to lead and manage academic programs, research activities, and student services. Alternatively, candidates who pursue additional requirements for certification could become administrators at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

With a research doctorate under your belt, you could also pursue a career as a postsecondary teacher . Overall, this field should grow at a faster-than-average rate of 12 percent over the next decade, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Most roles require a doctoral degree—generally, a Ph.D.

Finally, earning a doctorate in leadership could equip you for a management analyst career path. Management analysts evaluate organizations and suggest strategies for solving problems, improving efficiency, and growing profits. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that management analyst jobs will grow by 14 percent over the next decade—much faster than average.

Is an online Ph.D. in Leadership a respected credential? Will earning your Ph.D. be a worthwhile investment in your career? For most candidates, the answer is yes. Not only could your doctorate in leadership studies help you stand out in the job market, but now that online learning is a popular and credible way to earn a degree, there’s no difference between a traditional and online Ph.D. in Leadership beyond the convenience of studying in a virtual setting. Potential advantages include:

  • Career opportunities. Earning a doctorate is typically a requirement for roles such as postsecondary administrator and postsecondary teacher. With a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies, you’ll learn the skills you need to take your career to the highest level.
  • Higher earnings. With a Ph.D., you could qualify for roles that command a higher salary. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, postsecondary administrators earned a median annual salary of $96,910 in 2021. Postsecondary teachers earned $79,640 in the same period.
  • A bigger impact. Leading your school or organization into the future calls for advanced preparation. Earning a doctorate in leadership studies will equip you with the theory, skills, and research experience you need to solve urgent problems, drive positive change, and make a lasting difference.

Are you a current educator wishing to obtain Kentucky Rank 1 certification via our online leadership doctorate? You can achieve your goals by taking additional coursework within the School of Education. Keep in mind that a Ph.D. or Ed.D. alone will not lead to the Kentucky Rank 1 certification without an accompanying planned program from the School of Education that includes the courses required for Rank 1. Our knowledgeable advisors are here to help you enroll in the classes you will need for both your Ph.D. in Leadership Studies and the Kentucky Rank 1 certification.

The LEADERs Program

Partnerships in Research and PhD Education

Offered to all PhD students across Northeastern, the LEADERs program is among a growing number of niche initiatives developed to give students context-based experiences that will help prepare them to be impactful researchers in academia or beyond. The LEADERs program—Leadership Education Advancing Discovery through Embedded Research— integrates leadership and professional-skills education with a research project at an organization in industry or the public sector. These experiences enrich students’ communication, organization, and research skills, as well as organizations’ access to project-ready candidates that bring fresh research talent and thinking.

How does LEADERs work?

>  LEADERs was developed by Northeastern’s PhD Network and  its Gordon Institute of Engineering Leadership, recognized nationally for preparing graduates to lead projects and people. Designed for PhD students who have completed at least one year of study, LEADERs confers professional skills essential for careers in and beyond academia. Self-nominated applicants must also receive a confirming nomination by their faculty advisor.  Selected students will pursue an Experiential PhD Leadership certificate .

>  Classes taught by faculty and distinguished leaders in an array of fields explore organizational systems, communications, project management, teamwork, follower- ship, and leadership. In the program’s second half, students put theory into practice through a project aligned with their interests and designed jointly by an industry partner and faculty advisor.

>  Students, or LEADERs Fellows, are matched with an organization for up to 20 hours a week for eight months.

How do PhD students benefit?

> Students explore principles of leadership and teamwork together, then put their knowledge into practice. They receive guidance from a mentoring system that includes a representative from the partner organization, and leadership programming.

> As they build their skills and portfolio, all students have opportunities to expand their professional network and explore diverse career paths.

What do partners gain?

> Partners gain customized solutions from a superbly talented and dedicated PhD student. They gain access to faculty experts and the resources of a global research university. Further, they establish a pipeline for engaging and recruiting graduates who are the right fit for their organization.

>  Partnerships with Northeastern are aligned with business, technological, and societal imperatives—and designed to transform our world. IP arrangements are  flexible and  designed to work for all parties.

Acquire advanced knowledge and skills in a program designed for professional adults

This program is designed for working professionals who are emerging leaders in their field. The executive design allows students to complete the program in as little as three years by completing coursework and while working on their dissertation. The program is ideal for those who have completed a master’s degree at an accredited institution, with an option available for those who have reached all but dissertation (A.B.D.) status at another institution and wish to complete their doctorate at Alvernia.   Courses are delivered in a hybrid format with four 3-hour in-person meetings per term, approximately every other week, with the balance of coursework to be completed asynchronously online. Each student will be assigned a faculty advisor to chair their dissertation committee and must identify two other committee members from their network to guide them through the dissertation process.

A.B.D. Provides Pathway to Doctoral Degree

This is a pathway for the student who has not completed the dissertation requirements of another doctoral program. Our program features a dissertation completion approach customized to the individual student. Through a portfolio assessment of the competencies acquired from prior coursework, life experience, and scholarship, students may transfer in the equivalent for up to 45 credit hours in this 60-credit hour doctoral program.

The A.B.D. pathway requires a minimum of 15 hours of coursework to be completed at Alvernia University. Transfer courses will be considered individually for applicants who began doctoral coursework at another institution but are not A.B.D.

Getting Started

The Ph.D. in Leadership program is available at the following Alvernia University campus:

A new cohort starts each fall and spring semester. Along with your completed application accompanied by $50 non-refundable application fee, you’ll need to provide a few supporting materials. Because there’s lead time required for some items, here’s a step-by-step process that seems to work best for candidates:

  • While you wait for your transcripts to be processed, you can begin your online application , which lets you build, edit and save sections of your application along the way.
  • Order your official transcript(s). Official transcript(s) indicating that the applicant has earned a Master's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Personal Statement. One-page statement that summarizes the value of the program of doctoral study for your personal or professional growth and development.
  • Writing Sample. Upload a copy of your Master's thesis/paper or published work. Alternatively, you may provide a written response to the following question: What do you think is a major or current issue, in your area of expertise, that has a significant impact regarding the community?
  • Professional Resume.
  • Three letters of recommendation. Letters are accepted from professors, employers, or supervisors familiar with the applicant’s professional experiences.
  • Interview with the Ph.D. Program Director and Faculty member. After all the required application materials have been received, each applicant will be contacted to arrange for a personal interview.
  • Test scores (GRE, GMAT, or MAT) may be needed in consideration of an applicant with a Master's degree GPA below 3.25.
  • International applicants may have additional requirements and can review the application process for international students.

There are options to assist in financing your education and making the tuition affordable. Visit our financial aid page for a detailed overview of the process, including a link to complete the FAFSA application, as well as more information about the tuition payment plan and the tuition deferment program we offer. Key Takeaways

  • A number of graduate schools offer an online PhD in communications.

  • The best online communication doctorates are regionally and programmatically accredited and prepare students for success in the job market.

Featured Programs

Online doctoral degree programs are growing in availability and credibility. However, only a select number of universities offer a full selection of PhD in communication programs online.

In most fields, an online PhD is considered a terminal degree, which means it is the highest degree that you can earn in your field. This means that online doctoral programs for PhD students in communication can lead to opportunities for leadership, public consultation, research, and post-secondary education in your field.

Online PhD in communication candidates are typically already working at a high level in their field. This means that students seeking their doctorate must balance existing work and personal responsibilities with a challenging course of education. For many graduate students, online courses and fully online programs provide a way to achieve this balance.

For a look at how these online doctoral programs stack up against traditional on campus programs, check out our look at the The Best Research Universities for Communications Degrees .

About Accredited Online PhD in Communication Degree Programs

Online doctoral students have plenty of options, but quality and credibility are important when it comes to finding an online PhD. The best online doctorate programs will have proper accreditation:

  • Institutional Accreditation : Accreditation is vital for online doctoral programs. It signifies that the online PhD programs offered by the graduate school are in compliance with the standards of a Department of Education-approved accrediting body.

A school must also be accredited in order to offer federal financial aid to its online doctorate candidates. When looking for an online doctoral program, seek out options with accreditation from a colleges and schools commission in your region. This stamp of approval is critical for ensuring the quality and credibility of your online program.

  • Programmatic Accreditation : In addition to institutional accreditation, look for online doctorate degree programs with programmatic accreditation. Specialized programmatic accreditation can be an indication that certain online PhD programs are respected in your field. The Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC) is the key specialized accrediting agency in communications.
  • Carnegie Classification : The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, or as it is more commonly known, the Carnegie Classification, is a framework for categorizing all accredited, degree-granting institutions in the United States. Originally formulated in 1970 by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and administered through the University of Indiana’s Center for Postsecondary Research since 2014, the Carnegie Classification is “the leading framework for recognizing and describing institutional diversity in U.S. higher education.”

Under this classification, top research universities for doctoral degrees and PhD candidates are identified as either R2: Doctoral Universities for “high research activity” or R1: Doctoral Universities for “very high research activity.” Look for these classifications when considering options for your online Phd programs.

Key Point: The best online doctoral programs will have both institutional and programmatic accreditation.

Admission Requirements

Schools that offer online doctorate programs have different admission requirements. However, most online doctoral in communication programs will carry the same basic threshold for admission:

  • A completed online application
  • Official undergraduate college transcripts
  • A cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
  • GRE scores, MAT scores, or GMAT scores
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Personal interviews
  • Personal statement or essay
  • Plan of study

Key Point: In some cases, you’ll be eligible to enter a doctoral degree online after earning a bachelor’s degree. However, manyu specialized online PhD programs may require you to have earned a master’s degree as well.

Curriculum and Courses

As with other advanced degree and graduate programs, research is the central component of your online communications doctoral program. This is true for fully online doctorate degrees as well as hybrid degrees combining online education with traditional on-campus courses.

Regardless of whether you complete a traditional, hybrid or online doctoral program, the typical time to completion is three to five years.

The typical components of your online PhD program may include:

Foundational Courses

Your online PhD program will typically begin with a number of core courses in areas like technical communication, mass communication, strategic communication, and more. You will likely also take foundational courses in your area of concentration.

PhD program concentrations may include media and communication studies, health communication, political communication, and more. Foundational courses will also provide critical research skills including how to apply both quantitative research methods and qualitative research methods. You may be able to complete many of your communications program requirements through online classes.

Examinations for PhD Candidacy

Many online doctoral students are required to complete certain examinations to enter into online PhD candidacy. This will typically occur after you’ve completed one to two years of foundational courses.

Dissertation

The central component of most online PhD in communications programs will be the completion of a dissertation. After gaining status as an online PhD candidate, you will typically work closely with a professorial advisor or mentor to develop an original research question.

This research question will form the basis of your dissertation—an ongoing project designed to address this research question through applied research. While you will work closely with your advisor or mentor, much of your dissertation will be rooted in independent research. This is especially true for students pursuing an online PhD.

Oral Defense

Upon completion of the written portion of your dissertation—which will typically present the findings from your original research project—you will be expected to defend your findings. This “oral defense” will typically be conducted by a commission of professors and experts in your field. PhD candidates in some online degree programs may be able to conduct this defense via teleconferencing.

Teaching Requirements

Some online PhD programs will also include a teaching component, which will require you to work as an adjunct professor or teacher’s assistant in an undergraduate or graduate school. It may be possible for students in the online doctoral degree program to also serve teaching requirements by instructing online students.

Key Point: The online communications PhD is a research-focused degree. Your dissertation will be a central part of your online doctoral degree program.

Careers for Students Who Complete Online Communications Doctoral Degree Programs

Accredited online doctoral programs are generally terminal degree programs. This means that students who complete credible online doctoral programs in their field are generally eligible for top positions and opportunities in their field. This may indicate high paying opportunities for public policy research, post-secondary education, and editorship.

For instance, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the top 10% of earners in the field of Editing earned nearly $130,000 in 2021.

These higher earnings are reflective of the rarified professional opportunities that await those with a PhD in communications. Working professionals who earn an accredited online doctorate may be eligible to work in the following areas.

  • Marketing and Consumer Research
  • Publishing and Editing
  • Public Relations
  • Post-Secondary Education
  • Public Policy Consultation
  • Political Campaign Management

Key Points: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, students with a doctorate n communications will earn more than graduates with a bachelor’s or master’s degree.

What’s the difference between online doctoral programs and online PhD programs?

Technically, a PhD is a type of doctorate degree. This means that all online PhD candidates are doctoral students. By contrast, not all doctoral students are PhD candidates.

The primary distinction is that doctoral students are primarily focused on putting existing theories into practice. Depending on your chosen field, your online doctoral degree may require participation in an educational leadership program, engagement in clinical practice, work as a resident in a nursing program, and much more.

By contrast, online PhD students are focused on creating new knowledge in their area of study. This usually means that online PhD candidates are focused on introducing new theories, creating research projects around these theories, and presenting new findings that demonstrate a mastery of existing knowledge and the insight to introduce new ideas into the field.

Today, more working professionals than ever before are pursuing both online doctoral degrees and online Phd programs.

A PhD in Educational Leadership is an achievement by itself. However, it is also a remarkable combination that includes the best of two seemingly opposed worlds. This degree can help you refine the advanced strategies needed to both teach in a traditional classroom setting and to effectively command and manage a research team in a tertiary education setting.

This is the kind of specialization that can help enable you to enact new strategies and changes in places as varied as a K-12 school, a military training facility, and even universities.

Financial Management Doctorate

Any PhD in a Business field should certainly be an important and fruitful investment. However, such an advanced degree in Financial Management can open unique doors in specialized companies. For example, large companies that devote themselves to insurance, asset management, and financial investment are likely to be full of proven talent.

To rise to Senior Management in such a company, you will most likely require a degree at the PhD level. Financial Management specialists often find opportunities as policymakers and consultants as well.

Non-profit leadership and non-profit management are remarkably flexible fields, as they combine many aspects of political science, public policy, law, and business administration. Pursue this at the PhD level can help you acquire a well-developed foundation in all these fields.

In addition, there is a strong emphasis on the development of research skills and policy-making strategies, which you’ll need to perform as a senior manager in a nation-wide non-profit organization.

Organizational Leadership Doctorate

PhD programs in Organizational Leadership online provide their graduates with a solid foundation on the theoretical aspects of leadership, which by themselves, involve extensive knowledge in behavioral psychology, marketing, and human resource theory. It also encompasses several modules that address the practical skills needed to manage a large group of people.

This is an advanced degree that requires a significant time and financial investment. However, it can be a powerful tool to develop niche skills and to gain a competitive edge in the job market. A traditional or online PhD in Organizational Leadership can help you pursue a career directing operational research initiatives, management analysts, and postsecondary institutions.

Public Administration Doctorate

employees planning long-term strategies for company's growth

Normal MBAs are not only becoming increasingly common, but they are very focused on the tactics and values prized by the private sector. A PhD in Public Administration, on the other hand, can help provide you with a different outlook and a series of much more specialized skills.

Public administration experts require a more thorough knowledge of the nuances of publicly funded and non-profit organizations. In addition, these programs also place a stronger emphasis on long-term planning strategies and on policy-making. Finally, they offer a good training ground to cultivate contacts among the country’s movers and shakers.

Online Project Management Doctorate

Online Doctorate in Leadership Programs

different leadership programs

You can earn doctorate-level leadership degrees in the following programs:

  • PhD in Leadership

DBA in Leadership

  • EdD in Leadership

Graduates may go on to work in hospitals, schools, non-profit organizations, businesses, or government agencies.

PhD in Leadership Programs

The PhD program offers students the highest degree of scholarship with coursework that challenges them to think about specializations within organizational leadership. Many PhD programs require 30% or more course credits to graduate, and you have to prove a dissertation to show your research and in-depth knowledge of your specialization.

You can earn any of the following degrees:

  • PhD in Non-Profit Management
  • PhD in Special Education Leadership
  • PhD in Education – Leadership, Policy and Change
  • PhD in Education – Adult Education Leadership
  • PhD in Education – Community College Leadership
  • PhD in Education – K-12 Education Leadership

Students who earn a PhD will likely go on to work in education as a professor, or they may become consultants or human resource directors. There are many opportunities within the field for those who have a PhD, but typically, students will head into research rather than move into the field.

Opting for a PhD also means that you have completed the required coursework and achieved a higher GPA to get into the program. There are typically 60 or more credit hours required to complete a PhD leadership program. Students typically need at least a 3.0 GPA to qualify as a candidate for a PhD.

Some specializations include business administration, healthcare administration, education, human resources, mission leadership, entrepreneurial leadership, and higher education roles.

DBA in Leadership Programs

employees doing strategic planning

For those who want to enhance their business administration skills and advance to executive management roles, a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) may be a good degree option. A DBA can help students learn about strategic planning, statistical approaches to business, financial accounting, supervision theory, and creative management.

The key to a DBA is your specialization. You may be thinking about entrepreneurship or perhaps you want to go into executive leadership. Your coursework will define how you approach a DBA and what career paths will be best suited for your major. A DBA typically requires 40-60 credit hours, and while it’s not as rigorous as a PhD, students in this specialization still conduct research and take on residencies to complete the program.

Students who want to earn a DBA program must earn their undergraduate degree in a related field, maintain a 3.0 GPA on average, and propose a dissertation based on their research. Graduates typically earn their DBAs faster than a PhD due to fewer credit hours and research needs.

EdD in Leadership Programs

university professor teaching college students

The Doctor of Education, or EdD , offers students the chance to work in K-12 educational settings, as well as universities. It’s up to the student how far they take their specialization, but many students design their EdD programs around teaching and working with other students.

With specific learning theories, students often go on to become skilled teachers who have a strong background in higher education administration and educational psychology. Depending on your specialization, you can pursue one of these degrees:

  • Doctor of Education – Educational Leadership
  • Doctor of Education – Leadership in Higher Education
  • Doctor of Education – Organizational Leadership
  • Doctor of Education – Administrator Leadership for Teaching & Learning
  • Doctor of Education – Reading and Literacy Leadership
  • Doctor of Education – Teacher Leadership

The EdD program is usually the fastest of all doctoral leadership degrees. This is mainly because it typically doesn’t require as many credit hours. Students typically finish their degrees in less than three years after taking 40 to 45 credit hours. The coursework is designed to students to become advanced educators with skills in administration and diverse learning theories.

Students who want to advance their leadership abilities can research different specializations in higher education and complete a dissertation to graduate.

Most students who want an EdD already work in education as a teacher or administrator, but they may choose to focus on a new area to advance their careers. Some teachers choose to get an EdD in organizational leadership and school law or human resource management. The choice depends on the student and what’s desirable for their career path.

Should I Get My Doctorate in Leadership?

Whether it’s a company or school, organizations need talented leaders who know how to organize a project and successfully complete it. Students with online PhD’s in Leadership often go on to incredibly dynamic roles in administration and higher education, where they can truly excel as leaders.

They may take on roles in which they are able to build teams and strategically plan projects, or they may want to take on a role in higher education working with other research students.

If you decide to get a doctorate in leadership, you may want to opt for a DBA or EdD as they are typically faster programs and easier to get into than a PhD program. This is mainly because a PhD program usually requires that you have multiple years of experience as a working professional, and there are more credit hours required.

Most students will also have to complete residency courses and attend on-campus meetings for hands-on classroom knowledge. It’s important to know what specialization you want to focus on, as it can help you decide on coursework and a career path for after you graduate.

What Can I Do with a Doctorate in Leadership?

different professions for doctorate in leadership

There are endless fields to study with a doctorate in leadership. You may want to go into business, or perhaps you want to be an advanced educator at the professorial level. Earning a leadership degree is just the first step in working in a management role and moving into administration.

Most leadership degrees teach students about practical problems that face teachers in the classroom or how to work together with different teams at a business. Leaders must be organized and apply theories of policy and organization to keep everyone on task.

Some of the careers most popular for leadership degree graduates include:

  • Executive management
  • Postsecondary education administrator
  • Human resources manager
  • Financial manager
  • Public relations manager
  • Non-profit manager
  • Marketing manager
  • Project manager
  • Training and development manager

As these jobs are expected to grow through the next ten years, it’s clear that students will likely have all the control when it comes to picking their specialization. They may choose to go into product development, finance, marketing, human resources, education, or healthcare administration, which makes it a diverse degree to earn for anyone who wants to pursue a potentially six-figure administration position.

Are Online Doctorate Degrees in Leadership Respected?

happy female applicant hired in a job

There is a common misconception that just because degrees are earned online that they won’t be considered “as good as” a degree earned on a physical campus. However, there’s usually no distinction between degrees earned at a traditional university or via an online program.

Students may earn the same doctoral degrees at an online institution as they would at a physical university in their hometowns.

The benefits of an online doctoral program outweigh the need for an Ivy League college, as you can typically earn a degree in less time, pay less for the degree, and learn everything you need to go onto become a successful education administer.

Can You Earn a PhD in Leadership Entirely Online?

female student studying in a cafe

There are many online programs that offer exclusively online PhD programs. The question is whether you get the same value as a physical on-campus course or a hybrid course that may require a few visits to campus.

The answer is that students have to decide what their best options are for attending classes. If you work full-time or live far away from campus, you may decide that the online program is the perfect blend of convenience and professional degree programs.

Some programs may also seem like they are entirely online, but they may have a residency program where you have to go to school part of the time to learn and get grades while working in the field.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Doctorate in Leadership?

a pocket watch marked with years

Each program is different. Some schools want you to have comprehensive coursework that takes years to complete, while others know that you are working full-time and trying to move up quickly.

Typical doctoral leadership programs require at least a 40 credit hour completion, but many of the schools have changed to 60 credit hours. While you may be able to complete 40 credit hours in two to three years, you could be spending more time on your degree if you need 60 credit hours.

Most students who want a PhD must stay in school for four to five years.

How Much Does a Doctorate in Leadership Cost?

man showing money in his wallet

Your tuition is largely based on the classification and location of the school. You can expect a class to cost anywhere between $400 and $900. With higher costs, private universities typically charge more, but they may offer more aid to military veterans.

Students should expect to pay a minimum of $15,000 for a doctoral degree in leadership, but depending on the region and school accreditation, that number could go up to $50,000 or more. Students should also factor in the costs of books, computers, and a living stipend.

What’s the Difference Between a PhD and an EdD?

different careers showing the difference between a PhD and EdD

A Doctor of Philosophy degree in leadership is the highest degree that you can earn within the field. Students with a PhD in this field tend to move into the academic field, pursuing higher education administration roles or leading research projects about different applied leadership theories.

An EdD is a more practical application of the degree. Students are usually able to earn this degree much faster and typically have to take fewer credit hours than a PhD to graduate. While both degrees may require a dissertation, students with an EdD are expected to know about educational topics more than research. A growing number of Doctor of Education no dissertation programs are available.

This means that EdD candidates have in-depth knowledge of skills and techniques to keep students engaged in the classroom and apply different strategies for teaching material through the K-12 grades.

Candidates who plan on earning a PhD should think about their prerequisites as well. Most graduate schools require that PhD candidates apply early, maintain a 3.0 GPA, and have some working experience in the field.

What’s the Difference Between a PhD and a DBA?

students studying notes in books and laptop consecutively

While a PhD teaches students about research and focusing on a specialization, Doctor of Business Administration graduates go onto career paths in business and non-profit organizations. They may become financial account managers, project managers, or healthcare administrators.

Students who earn a professional doctorate can apply their skills and education to a specific role within a business. For example, students who earn a DBA may become human resources managers or public relations managers. This is why coursework mainly focuses on communication, business administration, marketing, project management , and financial accounting.

What’s the difference between an online PhD leadership degree and an organizational leadership Ph.D. online doctorate?

An online PhD in Leadership and an online PhD in Organizational Leadership are both advanced degrees focused on the study of leadership, but there can be some differences in their specific emphasis and scope.

Here’s a general comparison:

  • PhD in Leadership : The online PhD leadership program typically focuses on leadership theories, practices, and principles across various contexts, including business, education, government, and non-profit organizations. It explores leadership at a broader level, examining individual, group, and societal dynamics.
  • PhD in Organizational Leadership : This program specifically concentrates on leadership within the context of organizations. It delves deeper into topics such as organizational behavior, change management, strategic leadership, team dynamics, and the application of leadership theories within the organizational setting.

2024 Penn Prize for Excellence in Graduate Teaching celebrated

Ten winners received the prize, which takes nominations from undergraduates and recognizes master's students and ph.d. candidates..

People huddled together in front of bright window in the Graduate Center.

Inside the Penn Graduate Student Center on April 25, graduate students and friends, families, and supporting staff gathered to celebrate the 10 recipients of the 2024 Penn Prize for Excellence in Graduate Teaching.   “As graduate instructors, Penn Prize winners have made tremendous impacts on Penn students, helping them learn and find connection in classes and fields,” says Bruce Lenthall, co-director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Innovation , which provides support for the awards organized by the Office of the Provost. “The Prize winners’ commitment to their students reminds us how meaningful the engagement between graduate instructors and their students often is here.”   The awards were presented by Karen Detlefsen , vice provost for education, who noted the uniqueness of the awards because nominations are University-wide and come from undergraduates instead of faculty. This year there were 114 nominations that were narrowed by a committee to 20 finalists, and then to 10 winners.   In opening remarks, Detlefsen described the “effusiveness and gratitude” undergraduates showed in their nominations about how much the winning instructors advanced their educations.   Nipun Kottage, a Ph.D. candidate and MD student, won the Prize for teaching Introduction to Medical Anthropology. In the class, he says, students are instructed about health disparities and the political and social nature of them, learning how they can address these disparities in their career. One exercise he had students do was to conduct an interview with a family member who has had an illness experience and then talked through their findings.   “For me, in the classroom, I like to pose proposals to them and invite them to think with me and challenge and inductively build something together as a class,” he says. “We talk about a lot of really challenging issues.”   Winning the Prize, he says, “felt really wonderful” and he was happy to connect with his students again.   “I’m so grateful for all the things students have taught me, and the opportunity to work together in the classroom,” Kottage adds.

Joyce Kim, a Ph.D. candidate who studies higher education and sociology and also won the Prize, taught Introduction to Sociology and Introduction to Sociology Research Methods. She says she enjoys giving students the opportunity to discover the role sociology plays in their larger lives, as well as the mentoring relationships that happen once the course has ended.   “I think I made it a point to know my students beyond just seeing them within class time,” Kim says. “I took time to set up a pre-semester survey to get to know them beforehand, getting to see how their interests connect with course material, and I try to view them not as students but whole individuals, too.”   She says she was pleasantly surprised to receive the notification about the award, calling it “heartwarming.” She hopes to teach her own class related to the purposes of higher education soon, related to her research.   Steve Zdancewic , a professor of computer science and chair of the selection committee, says many students went well beyond what would be required of teaching assistant practices, and nominations mentioned that teachers exposed them to new ways of approaching a subject or problem.   “Teaching is hard, and good teaching is even harder,” Zdancewic says. “And thankfully, at Penn we have way too many good Ph.D. and graduate students helping with teaching, but we should acknowledge them and their good work. And practically, a lot of TAs may be destined for faculty positions at other places, and having an award like this might make a difference. It’s a way to validate that they have good teaching philosophies.”   Below, the full list of winners of the Penn Prize for Excellence in Graduate Teaching.   · Jeongmoon Choi—Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (SEAS)   · Jonathan Dick—English (SAS)   · Jamie Galanaugh—Neuroscience (PSOM)    · Joyce Kim—Sociology (SAS/GSE)   · Nipun Kottage—Anthropology (SAS/PSOM)   · Marissa Shandell—Management (Wharton)   · Azsaneé Truss—Communication (Annenberg)   · Jacqueline (Jacqui) Wallis—Philosophy (SAS)   · Caroline Wechsler—History and Sociology of Science (SAS/PSOM)   · Hannah Xiao—Data Science (SEAS)

Safety update about recent campus events

The safety and well-being of our campus community is our top priority. In that vein, we would like to share a safety update related to recent events on our campus.

Old Well surrounded by trees

Dear Carolina Community,

First, we will reopen the Campus Y building on Monday, May 6, with revised hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It was initially closed on Tuesday with other buildings in the area for safety reasons and concerns about after-hours door security. We are now cleaning a significant amount of debris and ensuring that hallways, entrances and exits are clear. We will continue to monitor the building.

We must support the safety and security of our entire campus and surrounding community. The recent protesters on our campus, many of whom are not students, have continually and aggressively overstepped boundaries and shown that they are not interested in a peaceful demonstration. Their actions and rhetoric prove they are willing to escalate their tactics to the point of putting everyone in danger.

In recent days, members of this group and others have caused damage to Polk Place, broken into academic buildings after hours, propped doors open to locked buildings, torn down barricades, pounded on windows and attempted to push through officers to forcibly enter South Building, hit police and other vehicles, thrown furniture in front of police vehicles injuring officers, entered classrooms during finals to cause disruptions, taken down the American flag flying over Polk Place twice, and thrown water bottles and fluids at University workers, police and administrators.

Most troubling, we have learned of an arson threat against a Jewish fraternity building and seen multiple instances of clearly antisemitic messages and threats in buildings.

Such activities cannot be tolerated, as they interfere with student learning, safety and well-being, as well as University operations. These activities are particularly disruptive at the end of the academic year, when students are taking final exams and we are preparing for our Commencement celebrations.

We have been closely watching the events happening at other universities around the country, and we have seen how demonstrations by similar groups have turned into significant disruptions to the entire community and threatened the safety of everyone involved.

We will continue to make decisions that we think best protect our community, and we are following our established procedures to assess disciplinary consequences.

We are aware there are many questions about the details surrounding a variety of University decisions and ongoing actions; please see answers to frequently asked questions .

Sincerely,

Nate Knuffman, Vice Chancellor for Finance and Operations

Amy Johnson, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

George Battle, Vice Chancellor for Institutional Integrity and Risk Management
