This is the first of a series of four-sequenced doctoral seminars for students in their 33rd semester hour of coursework. The first seminar focuses on assisting students in identifying a topic, developing appropriate research questions, and stating a problem. In addition, the seminar seeks to assist students to develop an outline of a literature map for a literature review related to an identified phenomenon. In addition, the seminar will strengthen students' scholarly writing capabilities, improve synthesis skills, assist in critiquing research, reviewing literature, mastering APA citation style, examining the role of theoretical and or conceptual frameworks in framing research studies, and exploring issues of alignment between topic, problem, research questions, theoretical framework and methodology in research studies. The capstone paper for this Doctoral Seminar is an extensive Background Paper.

Doctoral Seminar: Dissertation Inquiry

This is the second in a series of four-sequenced doctoral seminar courses for students in their doctoral journey. This second doctoral seminar serves as a research inquiry. Additionally, this doctoral seminar course will introduce students to the process of formulating ideas in ways directly related to critical aspects of their proposal. Students shall complete the "Pre-proposal Document," as the capstone assignment for the course. The ?Pre-proposal Document, is designed as a guide for committee members and students to serve the purpose of providing them with a sufficient road map about what the student intends to do. The "Pre-proposal Document" incorporates aspects of the background context to a proposed issue, problem statement, purpose of the study, research questions, significance of the issue to policy, practice, and theory, literature review, theoretical framework, methodology, ethical issues and related IRB processes. The "Pre-proposal Document" allows students to capture all these aspects in a form of a mini proposal. Students shall orally defend the "Pre-proposal Document". Prerequisite: EDF 8931

Doctoral Seminar: Proposal

This is the fourth of the series of four-sequenced doctoral seminar courses for students in their doctoral journey. This fourth doctoral seminar serves as the doctoral students' dissertation proposal phase. This semester-long (16 week seminar will focus on student readiness and competence for pursuing research objectives outlined in the Doctoral Student Toolbox Structural Guidelines. Additionally, this seminar guides students in demonstrating their ability to integrate and apply the knowledge and skills developed through formal course work by designing and writing an original research proposal on a researchable topic or phenomenon in accordance with the UWF Structural Guidelines for Proposals and Dissertations. Students should successfully defend their proposals orally to their Doctoral Dissertation Committee. Obtaining two unsatisfactory grades at this level may result in the removal of the student from the doctoral program. Prerequisite: EDF 8931 AND EDF 8932 AND EDF 8935

Dissertation

Major individual research in an area of significant educational interest; designed specifically for candidates in the Ed.D. Curriculum and Instruction, Teacher Education Specialization. The dissertation reflects intensive educational research produced by the student and collaboratively developed with the student's graduate committee. Graded on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis only. Admission to candidacy, completion of all other doctoral program requirements and permission are required.

1-18 (may be repeated up to 18 credit hours) Credit Hours

Major individual research in an area of significant educational interest; designed specifically for candidates in the Ed.D. Curriculum and Instruction program. This dissertation will reflect intensive educational research produced by the student and collaboratively developed with the student's graduate committee. Graded on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis only. Admission to candidacy and completion of all other doctoral program requirements are required.

Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission into UWF’s online Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, you must have a graduate degree from an accredited institution. Other criteria for successful admission include:

How to Apply

Due to the restructuring of the School of Education, the Curriculum and Instruction, Ed.D. program will not be admitting students for Fall 2024. 

To apply for admission to this program, you first need to submit an application for graduate admission (plus a $30 application fee) and be accepted for admission to the University of West Florida. In addition, you must:

  • Submit official transcripts from all institutions previously attended whose accrediting agency is included on the list of UWF approved accrediting agencies
  • What personal and professional goals do you hope to meet through earning a doctorate, and why do you think the UWF Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction is a good fit for your goals?
  • What special knowledge, skills and experiences would you bring to the chosen specialization and how are these aligned with the mission of the doctoral program in Curriculum and Instruction as a whole? If you have had experiences that may have affected your academic performance, please provide explanatory context.
  • Be careful to clearly articulate how your skills and experiences align with the goals of the specialization and show how these will impact your career trajectory.
  • Submission of three professional reference forms where at least two references are able to speak to your academic work, writing skills and sustainability for rigorous doctoral academic work.

Costs & Financial Aid

Tuition waivers cover up to 90% of the non-resident portion of your tuition and are available to non-Florida residents (including international students) admitted to online programs and registered for online courses in active pursuit of that degree or certificate. You must pay all other assessed tuition and fees. Review Tuition Waiver Information to learn more.

Time to completion varies by student, depending on individual progress and credits transferred, if applicable. Fees are charged per semester unless otherwise noted. This program takes up to 24 months to complete, excluding dissertation hours and depending on course availability.

Alabama Differential Out-of-State Tuition

Residents of Alabama are eligible for Alabama Differential Tuition, a reduced out-of-state tuition rate. For more information and to verify residency status for tuition purposes, new undergraduate students should contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and new graduate students should contact the Graduate School. Current students should contact the Office of the Registrar.

Active Duty Military

All active-duty members of the U.S. military who are residing or are stationed outside the state of Florida shall have all (100%) out-of-state fees waived by the university. Contact the Military & Veterans Resource Center to apply for the Active Duty Military Out-of-State Waiver.

Superintendents

School superintendents are the head administrator of a school system. These professionals normally answer to the school board. Superintendents are in charge of hiring principals for all schools in their district, dismissing teachers or disciplining employees, making a budget and managing students. Superintendents work year-round to ensure the success of their school system. Salaries for superintendents start at $134,786 and could become higher with experience.

Literacy and Reading Coach (Instructional Coordinator)

Instructional coordinators develop curricula and instructional material and manage teaching standards. They analyze student data, evaluate curriculum effectiveness, and train teachers and staff on new school programs. Through 2031, employment is projected to increase 7 percent, and the median annual wage is $63,740.

Curriculum Developers

Curriculum developers’ duties include authoring educational training material and developing programs of instruction in industries such as education, government, business and communications. They offer expertise in online educational programming, usage metrics and course design. Their average annual salary is $69,622.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Education (PhD) is a college-wide degree awarded for distinguished academic preparation for professional practice in the field of education. The program includes a variety of tracks including Curriculum and Instruction.

The Curriculum and Instruction track develops educational leaders in curriculum development, teaching, curriculum evaluation, and/or teacher education and professional development. The program varies in the number of credit hours required, depending upon the candidate’s qualifications, and includes courses required for all doctoral students enrolled in the College of Education; courses in an area of focus, such as issues and trends in curriculum, teaching and learning, curriculum and program evaluation, and research on teacher education and professional development; breadth courses; a field project or an internship in college teaching; and the dissertation.

Uog doctoral program set to launch in fall 2024.

The University of Guam announces that it has received approval from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC)   to begin offering its first ever online doctoral program — a Doctor of Education (EdD) in Instructional and Academic Leadership.

The new EdD program emphasizes development of the “scholar-practitioner” who will integrate their professional experiences with research and theory to improve educational practices within their cultural contexts and to influence change in their educational and organizational settings.

“UOG was founded as a teaching college in 1952 and has since developed tremendous capacity for teachers, counselors, and school administrators for our island and region,” said Anita Borja Enriquez, UOG President. "This new doctoral program is our commitment to advancing education, elevating the focus on research agendas relevant to our region, and addressing improvement to instructional areas and overall educational leadership."

School of Education Dean Alicia Aguon noted that the new doctorate responds to the needs of educators and school systems across the region.

“Our survey had nearly a thousand respondents including alumni, education professionals, and stakeholders throughout Micronesia, and overwhelmingly, there was a stated need for a program geared toward instructional and academic leadership,” said Aguon. “This doctoral program is groundbreaking as it has been developed with a cultural competency unique to our region.”

The School of Education will begin accepting applications to the doctoral program this summer with its first courses starting this October. UOG will release more details in the coming weeks about information sessions and the application timeline.

“This isn’t just a milestone for UOG, it’s a milestone for education across the region,” said Enriquez “I am thrilled to see the meaningful, diverse conversational and collaborative synergies unfold from our inaugural cohort.”

Overview of the Doctor of Education (EdD) in Instructional and Academic Leadership

  • The EdD program is an online program with 20 required courses and a total of 60 credit hours.
  • The dissertation is built in as coursework in the program of study.
  • The program is expected to take four years to complete without pausing. 
  • The UOG Board of Regents approved the program in June 2023 and the WASC Senior College and University Commission approved the program in March 2024.
  • Up to 25 students are projected for the program’s inaugural cohort.
  • The program will launch in Fanuchånan (Fall) 2024.

Cleveland State University's online program in Gifted and Talented Learners is designed for previously certified/licensed teachers who are seeking any of the following:

  • An  endorsement  as an intervention specialist to teach gifted and talented learners -  Now available in Fast Track format!
  • A  Master’s degree  in curriculum and instruction with a specialization in gifted education
  • Professional development  to improve their skills working with high-ability students

The multi-dimensional program is aligned with the teacher preparation standards from the National Association for Gifted Children and The Council for Exceptional Children, The Association for the Gifted and includes:

  • Training to better understand and meet the academic and social-emotional needs of diverse gifted learners (e.g., racially, culturally, linguistically, academically, and socially)
  • Developing the knowledge, skills, and strategies necessary to create high-quality curriculum and lesson plans based on best practices in the field
  • Collaborating with children's families and other professionals
  • Understanding the continuum of services from which teachers and schools can choose to meet the needs of gifted, talented, high achieving and high performing students in a variety of settings

Ohio  rules, regulations, and policies for gifted education  are built into the courses; however, we have designed the assignments to be flexible so that anyone working in a different state can successfully complete all their work using information from their state.

Learning Methodogy

Courses are 15 weeks and are asynchronous with optional weekly meetings. Program access requires familiarity with internet access, computer camera access, and word processing capabilities. The program is conducted through Blackboard and Zoom and many assignments require that you observe and gather data within a school or classroom setting. Course work is designed to prepare you to:

  • Recognize and nurture talents in diverse populations
  • Understand and support the educational growth of gifted students in the general classroom, special classes or special schools
  • Develop and adapt curriculum to advance and enrich content standards
  • Collaborate with families and other professionals
  • Create challenging and supportive environments for learning
  • Support the social and emotional learning of gifted students

Admissions Requirements

All students applying to the Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction must:

  • Apply for admission to Cleveland State University

Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution. Students must meet with an advisor to design a program of study.

Evidence of ONE of the following criteria:

  • Your baccalaureate degree is less than six years old at the time of application AND your undergraduate cumulative grade point average was 2.75 or
  • Your baccalaureate degree is more than six years old at the time of application AND your undergraduate cumulative grade point average was 3.00 or above OR
  • You have completed the equivalent of 12 semester hours of CSU graduate coursework, including EDB 601, AND you received a grade of “B” or better in each course

Online courses are taught by experienced teachers, coordinators and researchers. Courses include audio and video content, including demonstrations of classroom practices. The practicum course includes face-to-face or virtual visits from a CSU instructor to the student's classroom.

The  M.Ed. in Gifted and Talented Learners  includes:

Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction Required Courses (24 credits total)

Electives (6 credits minimum), gifted endorsement (15 credits), fast track gifted endorsement (15 credits).

Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition and financial aid for CSU programs are kept competitive so you can receive the education you deserve. Tuition for online programs and courses follows the same fee structure as traditional, on-campus programs and courses.  Current CSU Graduate tuition costs can be found on the Bursar’s website .

Approximately 70% of CSU’s students receive some form of financial assistance. The University participates in or administers all the major federal and state grant and loan programs. In addition, CSU provides University grants and scholarships.

To begin the financial aid process, you will need to complete the  Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) . You must file a FAFSA every year after January 1st to receive your financial aid. Cleveland State University’s financial aid school code is 003032.

CSU has allowed me to achieve what I thought would not be possible: to work full time while earning my gifted endorsement to better empower my own teaching philosophy and equip a teaching staff with knowledge and strategies on how to best serve this dynamic population. As a principal continuously looking to grow, the courses offered by CSU have challenged my thinking to be more inclusive of a gifted population and advocate on their behalf. Working through coursework at my schedule has been convenient, and I feel well-equipped to serve gifted students as a direct result from a gifted endorsement program that continues to be flexible and affordable. Promoting the Cleveland EDGE: Excellence and Diversity in Gifted Education is easy as this program will ultimately help my students become leaders within their areas of talent, explore curricular options that I did not know were available, and continue to advocate for the inclusion of students of all backgrounds in programming options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can i apply for the program if i don’t have a teaching license/ am not working in schools.

This program is designed for working teachers or administrators, and many of the assignments require that you practice the strategies and concepts within a school environment. If you don’t have a teaching license, we can work with you through other programs to get you certified and add on your gifted endorsement. If you have a license, but aren’t currently working in schools, we can work with you to obtain an experience that will allow you to complete the requirements of the program and courses.

Do I have to do the Master’s degree if I only want the endorsement?

No. The endorsement is 15 credit hours, and you can stop there if you like. However, if you decide that you do want to get your Master’s degree, those 15 hours of the endorsement will count towards the 30 hours of the Master's in curriculum and instruction with a concentration in gifted education. You would need to finish an additional 15 credit hours to finish the Master’s degree.

Yes. You would still need to take the 15 hours focused in gifted education for the endorsement. We are looking into the possibility of advanced opportunities beyond the Master’s degree.

I am not teaching in Ohio, but another state. Can I still take this program?

You will need to check with your State Department and see if these courses would count towards your state requirements for teaching gifted children and/or gifted endorsement. Because this program is aligned with the NAGC/CEC national standards for gifted education, there is a good chance, but each state has different requirements. We focus on the laws and expectations for teachers in Ohio, but if you are from another state, assignments can be adapted for your environment.
