Law School Admissions Essays: Why Do I Want to Be a Lawyer?

A less obvious, more common mistake is to write about how you want to help people. The fact is that most law school graduates, especially from the top schools, go on to work in the private sector. Law school admissions officers are not out to judge the moral value of your career intentions, particularly because they know that people often change their minds. They're well aware that most of their graduates will go on to seek financially rewarding careers. Therefore, applicants who mention clichis about wanting to "improve society" usually sound disingenuous.

Focusing on Specific Legal Areas

If you have a specific goal, such as working for a particular disadvantaged group that lacks advocates, then the situation is different: It's always good to showcase a unique, focused commitment. Even better would be if you had a track record of community service to back up your objectives. For example, you may have worked with handicapped people for several years, and this exposed you to certain injustices that you want to correct. The same approach would work for topics that are not about public service. For example, this applicant describes his background in science and connects this to his current interests in intellectual property law. He recognizes that his unusual background is a strength rather than a liability. His unique reasons for attending law school are clearly grounded in relevant experience and thoughtful consideration.

The result is an essay that provides two specific details: first, a concrete event that demonstrates her exposure to law, and second, a distinct field of law for which she has special qualifications to pursue.

This essay focuses even more explicitly on the role that law and lawyers have played in the applicant's life. Though the details of the essay still center on the applicant's background, he uses past encounters with the law to define his current objectives.

What I Wish I Had Known Before Becoming a Lawyer

There is always going to be more work — we can’t say the same about our health.

In the past few years, we’ve learned how common burnout is. In this article, the author opens up about their experience of prioritizing their job as a lawyer over their own mental health, and shares some strategies young lawyers or new grads can use to avoid falling into this trap.

Before taking a job, gauge the company culture. If you take a job in a work environment that doesn’t value you beyond your skills or take care of your psychological health, it’s going to be unsustainable in the long run.
Don’t ignore your physical triggers. If you feel stressed during your workday, practice small things like staying hydrated, breathing deeply for a few seconds, or taking a short walk around your office to physically disconnect.
The hard truth is that the legal profession is extremely draining. So, build a life outside work. This could look like taking regular time off such as vacation or personal days. Another option is to look for hobbies and activities outside work that energize you and give you joy.
Finally, give yourself a little grace. At the end of the day, remind yourself that you’re doing the best you can.

While being sophisticated is great, legal jargon if not used correctly or appropriately can weaken your essay. Aim to be concise and to stick to the point. Don’t use ten words when only two will do.

MOSCOW, Jan. 13—A British lawyer said he was rebuffed today by the Soviet) prosecutor's office and the state security police when he offered to represent Anatoly Shcharansky, the 29-year-old dissident beine held on charges of treason.

Isadore Fisch, from Leeds, said he and Mr. Sheharansky's mother, Ida Milgrom, had been told by a member of the prosecutor's staff and a K.G.B. officer at Lefortovo Prison that only a Soviet lawyer would be acceptable.

Mrs. Milgrom was told last week to get a lawyer for her son by today. She said she has already been turned down by 20 Soviet lawyers. In addition, Mrs. Fisch said, the heads of three lawyers’ “collectives,” groups totaling 120 attorneys, had told her that none of ‘their members would take the case.

Mr. Shcharansky was arrested last March after the Government newspaper. Izvestia published a letter from a police agent, who had posed as a dissident, suggesting tbat Mr. Shcharansky had done errands for the Central Intelligence Agcncy.

A Jew who sought to emigrate to Israel, Mr. Shcharansky was an active member of t’ committee of dissidents created to monitor Soviet violations of human I rights.

Moscow Legal Tech’s Holger Zscheyge: a Lawyer Replaced by Robot Is Less Probable Than a Lawyer Replaced by Another Lawyer With Better Technology

As our knowledge of robotics and machine learning evolves, automation advances into a variety of aspects in our daily lives and jobs. Soon, AI will be able to get to even the most complicated, abstract, and responsible tasks traditionally available only to humans. One of such complicated cases is the adoption of AI-based solutions in legal practice. To some extent automation was present in legal practice for some time now, as the first technological solutions for lawyers were available since the 70s. However, back then such solutions weren’t anything like the tech of today. Or were they?

Delving deeper into the matter of AI-lawyers and AI-judges, lawless.tech reached Holger Zscheyge, a professional legal publisher, legal tech and law firm strategy expert, a prominent speaker, and one of the co-organizers of Moscow Legal Tech, the first specialized conference on legal tech in Russia.

lawless.tech: First, what inspired you, a publishing professional, to dive into legal tech? Were there other grand ideas competing for your commitment?

Holger Zscheyge: Lawyers are my main customers as a publisher. So I am interested that they stay relevant in the 21st century. And legal information alone doesn’t cut it anymore to stay relevant. I started to read the books by thought leaders like Richard Susskind, Mitch Kowalski or Bruce MacEwen about the changing environment for legal services. But the real starting point has been a revelation in 2015. Our colleagues at the “Legal Insight” magazine organize an annual forum for the heads of legal departments of Russian companies. You have to come up with new topics every year, so in 2015 we decided to conduct a survey, together with PwC Legal, about the use of technology for business processes in legal departments. About 500 departments took part in the survey. Long story short – back then 70% of legal departments in Russia used solely Microsoft Office for the automation of their processes. In 2015 that’s a total disgrace for the profession. So we decided to set up a panel discussion about legal technology at the 2015 forum, a totally new topic back then. This discussion turned out to be the hit of the forum, so we asked ourselves “Why not organize a conference around legal tech?” In 2016 Moscow Legal Tech was the first conference in Russia on the issue. The rest is history. In 2017, barely a week went by without some legal tech event. In the most recent survey only 10% of Russian legal departments stated that they use only Microsoft Office for automating their processes.

As I said, the grand idea is to keep lawyers relevant (so they can earn money and buy my products). That is what I am committed to. Technology is only a part of it, together with new management methods, business development skills, process optimization and service promotion and delivery. It’s the package that makes the difference.

lawless.tech: This year you’ve co-organized the third Moscow Legal Tech conference. What were the hottest topics presented? What were the most popular or interesting questions brought up?

Holger Zscheyge: We are traditionally strongly oriented on processes. This is the first step is to analyze and understand your processes. Only after this you can start with automation. So we build Moscow Legal Tech around fundamental ideas and show how to implement them by using technologies. This year we emphasized on topics like innovation, legal operations, cybersecurity, compliance, blockchain and data science. The technology part was covered by a vendor ally and an elevator pitch session of legal tech startups. The whole topic of artificial intelligence was split out into a separate conference on April 6, which we co-organized together with the Skolkovo Technopark. The most pressing (and interesting) questions are always around the practical implementation of process automation and optimization. About 75% of the attendees are from legal departments. For them, blockchain and smart contracts are nice to know, but the automation of contract review or claim filing is need to know. That’s the tasks heads of legal are faced at the moment.

lawless.tech: Why did you choose to work in the Russian market, if there are such active legal tech hubs as the US’ Silicon Valley, the UK, and Germany? What can you say about the local legal tech community?

Holger Zscheyge: The decision to work in the Russian market has been made long before the decision to explore legal tech. I came to Russia in 1996 to work for Wolters Kluwer, a large multinational publishing company. Since then I never looked back. Sure, the US, UK and Germany are the three largest markets for legal services in the world. Therefore, competition is strong and talent is rare, especially in the valley, where giant corporations pick the best developers off the market. As I see it, we have a “golden triangle” of highly educated and capable developers in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. You can start with an idea and comparable low investment, make it into a product that you sell on the local market, and then scale it to conquer Western markets. There are already cases of startups that have followed that path – Pravo.ru (case.one) from Russia and PatentBot from Ukraine.

As for the dynamics – I don’t see a substantial difference between the dynamics in Western and Eastern Europe. To an extent things are even more dynamic in Russia and Ukraine right now. In mid-May a team from Legal Geek (the organizer of the largest legal tech conference in Europe) and Nextlaw Labs came to Moscow to listen to pitches from 15 startups (14 from Russia, one from Ukraine) on their tour around the world to find the best legal tech startups. That’s double the amount of startups they saw at the next stop, Singapore. And they have been blown away by the variety of ideas in our markets.

lawless.tech: Typically, automation in almost any area eliminates workplaces or at least forces people to learn new skills to keep up with the job market. In this respect, what is the situation in legal practice?

Holger Zscheyge: That’s what happens, when new technologies enter the economy. Whole sectors of the economy undergo dramatic changes. Some people lose their jobs, the workforce in general has to learn new skills. This happens faster and faster – some 100-200 years ago you could hold a job for your entire life with the same skill set. Today you will be out of a job if you do not improve your skills for a couple of years. As the great Alvin Toffler said “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn”.

In general, new technologies improved the life of everybody. For instance, in the 80’s of the 19 th century, almost 80% of the American population was employed in agriculture. Back then it was hard, hard labour. Today, only about 3% of Americans are employed in agriculture. It is still hard work, but instead of toiling on a field, you sit in an air conditioned combine that is maneuvered by software and GPS, and operated with a joystick. Productivity is much, much higher today. And most the remarkable drop in employment in agriculture didn’t destroy the American economy or society. Society and governments have to take care of those that become victims of tectonic shifts on the labour market, by providing job alternatives, training and, where this doesn’t help, some form unconditional basic income.

Of course, technologies will change the playing field for legal services as well. If it was enough to be a good lawyer in order to be successful in the legal services industry, you now have to be proficient in business process optimization and technology as well. It’s like a three-legged stool – if one leg is missing, you can’t’ sit comfortable.

But in general technologies will make the work of lawyers more interesting. According to McKinsey, 23% of a lawyer’s tasks can be automated with existing technologies. And these are normally tasks that are delegated to paralegals and junior lawyers – dreadful repetitive jobs like sifting through thousands of pages of documents during a due diligence. Instead of spending months of the time of humans on those tasks, technology tools can do the job in seconds. Lawyers will spend their time on more valuable and intellectually stimulating work.

lawless.tech: Evidently, legal technology solutions are already taking over the paralegals’ jobs, such as document discovery, complaint processing, or looking for precedents. Will such solutions eventually replace people in more complex and “human” professions such as lawyers or even judges?

Holger Zscheyge: In 2013, Carl Benedikt Frey and Michael A. Osborne of Oxford University published a report titled “The Future of Employment: How susceptible are jobs to computerisation?”. Frey and Osborne tried to predict the probability with which humans will be replaced by robots in various professions. The probability for paralegals is indeed very high, 94%. That’s because paralegals are handed predominantly repetitive, relatively easy tasks. Jobs, that can and will be taken over by technology. The probability of lawyers being replaced entirely by algorithms is only 3.5%, very low indeed. The probability for judges is somewhere in between – 40%. But a machine without empathy cannot make a fair decision in a complex legal dispute, or where law collides with common sense. A human judge would not hand a sentence to somebody for violating traffic regulations because a sick child had to be delivered to the hospital as quickly as possible. What algorithms can do is unbiasedly decide high volume matters where the decision is only a technical issue. This would greatly decrease the pressure courts are under all over the world and expedite the delivery of justice.

I think that a lawyer replaced by robot is less probable than a lawyer replaced by another lawyer with better technology. That’s what we all should focus on.

lawless.tech: AI is one of the most promising aspects of our technological progress. It is paving its way into legal tech as well. There is an opinion that a robotic judge would have no empathy to the defendants. On the other hand, most people think that an AI judge would also be completely unbiased. Do you think that robotic judges need such a human trait as empathy to make fair decisions? Simply put, will the AI judges be an idealistic manifestation of the blind justice or an insensitive scourge punishing without hesitation?

Holger Zscheyge: Let’s all calm down for a moment. The instant you start talking about AI in the legal profession, everybody is discussing robo-lawyers, robo-judges and robo-legislators. We tend to go from the top, assign the most sophisticated legal jobs to artificial intelligence. I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure that everybody who reads this interview will not live to see an AI with that capability. But there are millions of cases where a sufficiently advanced artificial intelligence might help speed up the delivery of justice in the near future. Courts all over the world are swamped with cookie-cutter cases, where it is relatively easy to get to a just decision. And you do not need empathy to resolve them. There might be one in ten thousand traffic violation cases, where someone ignored speed limits to deliver a sick child or an expecting mother to the hospital. For this, you need a human to make a fair decision. The other cases are just what they are – violations of the law, and the defendant should be punished according to the law.

Humans are flawed, but that is what makes them human. I don’t think that we need an army of Judge Dredd’s, even if they are incorruptible, unbiased and with all the necessary legal knowledge. What we need is a better way to serve justice quick and at an affordable price to society. And if artificial intelligence can help, and if humans still have a choice whom to trust with the delivery of justice, then let it be. At a recent event about data science at Yandex a speaker, who talked about the possibility of robo-judges, asked the audience whom they would trust more with deciding a legal case. The majority voted for the robo-judge.

lawless.tech: Do you think that legal tech products are currently more demanded by legal professionals or, on the contrary, by their clients? How will this trend change in the future?

Holger Zscheyge: Let’s start with fixing the wrong perception of lawyers, that clients are looking for a legal professional. They are looking for a solution for their legal problems. Furthermore, they want three things: 1) transparent and predictable prices, 2) high quality of work, and 3) excellent customer service. That’s all. And if that can be achieved faster by implementing technologies, then clients will demand that lawyers use those legal tech products. That is already happening in the B2B sector. Legal departments demand explicitly that law firms are deploying legal tech, otherwise they will lose work. The general public will follow, or pivot to alternative service providers. Look at the industry around “airline compensations”. Technology-based providers found a way to make suing an airline for a compensation of € 250 on average profitable for both sides. This is now a six billion Euro market annually. I hope that law firms realize the threat, and the potential, and catch up with technologies soon.

lawless.tech: What does the “traditional” legislative apparatus think about this ongoing technological intervention into legal practice? Is there a need for additional rules to regulate the usage of legal technology? Are there any attempts to do so?

Holger Zscheyge: We already have a decent framework of regulations for the legal services industry in most developed countries. Technologies are mere tools for professionals, and if the work of those professionals is sufficiently regulated, then we do not need to regulate the tools as well. Nobody would regulate the use of a fax machine either. There will be new aspects to the work arising out of new technologies, like data privacy or cybersecurity. Those aspects need to be regulated independently of the technologies used.

What might help the proliferation of legal technologies are regulations or recommendations by governing bodies of the legal profession to use technology. One example is Rule 1.1 of the American Bar Association, requiring that “a lawyer should keep abreast of changes in the law and its practice, including the benefits and risks associated with relevant technology”.

Legislators might have to catch up with laws that enable new technologies, set the legal framework for technologies like blockchain to work in real use cases. Another important issue where legislators can help is the open access to data. Governments are the owners of huge amounts of data (data on individuals and corporations, financial data, court decisions, etc.). Open access to that data will hugely impact the development of legal technology.

lawless.tech: How would you evaluate the legal tech industry as of today? What were the earliest attempts in this area? What are the most notable projects out there? What do you think about its future?

Holger Zscheyge: Legal professionals using technology to become more efficient is not a new phenomenon. LexisNexis, the research tool no American lawyer can live without, was founded in 1970. German practice management software AnNoText was released in 1978. Even on the post-Soviet territories legal databases appeared as early as 1990. But a real boom legal tech experienced in the years after the global financial crisis in 2008. Cash-strapped corporate clients decreased their legal budgets, transferred legal work in-house in order to slash costs. This could be achieved only by applying technologies. So the demand rose for everything that made legal processes more efficient. Together with that trend the falling prices for IT infrastructure made it possible to start technology-intensive SAAS projects like marketplaces or online document assembly software. These projects were meant to improve access to justice and legal advice for those who can’t afford it at the regular prices.

Notable projects are LegalZoom, Avvo and Rocket Lawyer that made legal help more accessible and affordable. Clio is a good example in the practice management domain. Lex Machina made waves when they were acquired by LexisNexis. Today there are quite a number of projects already that became “household names” in the legal profession.

In my opinion, when we go past the hype about legal tech in the last 2 years, the future will be rather bright. There is a demand for technologies that make lawyers’ work more efficient and affordable. As long as legal tech developers provide the right solutions at the right price, lawyers will buy them. In our surveys with PwC Legal money, or the lack thereof, has never been the main reason legal departments did not buy technologies. The main reason has been that existing solutions didn’t sufficiently meet the specifications of the departments. So there is potential in the market. The US market for legal tech alone is estimated to have a potential of 16 billion US-Dollars annually (total accessible market). Only 3 billion of that materialize in sales, or less than 20%.

Another huge potential lies in making legal help more affordable to citizens and small and medium sized (SME) businesses. Over 80% of US citizens cannot afford legal services at the present cost. Only 13% of SME business owners in the UK consider the prices for legal services to be adequate, and they have legal problems in the amount of £100 billion annually. 70% of Germans do not use the services of lawyers because the pricing is not transparent enough. Take the example with the airline compensation market – nobody will spend € 400 to receive a € 250 in compensation. The moment someone started to use technology to offer a no-risk deal for 25% of the compensation, a new market was created.

For over 40 years lawyers all around the globe have been utilizing numerous technological solutions to get their jobs done faster and better. Evidently, the fears that tomorrow, if not today, their jobs will be taken away altogether by perfectly unbiased sentient machines are somewhat unreasonable.

In the next decades, legal tech tools will most likely remain mere tools, though increasingly more sophisticated. The introduction of AI-based solutions, in its turn, will make legal tech smart, but the real human lawyers and judges will remain at the helm. Nevertheless, the tech on the legal professionals’ table is a must-have in this rapidly advancing industry.

New York Federal Court Disqualifies Lawyer John Moscow and BakerHostetler in Magnitsky Money Laundering Case

21 December 2015 – The federal court in New York has disqualified lawyer John Moscow and his firm, BakerHostetler, who represented the alleged Russian recipients of money laundering proceeds from the US$230 million Russian fraud that Sergei Magnitsky uncovered, in a civil forfeiture case brought by the US Department of Justice. The case alleges money laundering of proceeds of Russian fraud into multi-million dollar Manhattan real estate by Prevezon, a company owned by a son of former Vice-premier of the Moscow Region and the current Vice-president of Russian Railways Pyotr Katsyv.

John Moscow and BakerHostetler had originally worked for Hermitage in 2008 to defend Hermitage against unfounded accusations relating to the fraud, including (among other projects) by tracking the stolen US$230 million and its recipients, and bringing the evidence of this complex Russian fraud which victimised Hermitage, to the US Department of Justice. On Hermitage’s behalf, John Moscow personally presented the findings from the Hermitage’s and Sergei Magnitsky’s investigations of the $230 million fraud to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

On 25 November 2008, one day after Sergei Magnitsky’s arrest by corrupt Russian officials on false charges, John Moscow also became involved in Hermitage’s legal actions to free Sergei Magnitsky from Russian detention. Prior to his arrest, Sergei Magnitsky gave testimony to Russian authorities implicating Russian officials in the theft of Hermitage’s Russian companies and of US$230 million the Hermitage’s companies had paid to the Russian government.

One year later, on 16 November 2009, Sergei Magnitsky was killed in Russian police custody before he could testify in an open trial.

In 2013, John Moscow and BakerHostetler switched sides, and went from representing Hermitage to representing Russian-owned Prevezon, an alleged beneficiary of the US$230 million fraud, that Sergei Magnitsky’s investigation had led to after his death. The US Department of Justice has traced to Prevezon nearly US$2 million of the US$230 million fraud proceeds and more funds in false and questionable transactions. The US court has frozen about US$14 million in Prevezon’s assets, including bank accounts and several Manhattan properties.

In November 2015, John Moscow and BakerHostetler made filings on Prevezon’s behalf in which they explicitly accused Hermitage of committing the US$230 million fraud that they originally have been hired to defend against.

On 15 December 2015, Hermitage filed a motion to disqualify BakerHostetler and John Moscow.

In Judge Griesa’s opinion, issued on 18 December 2015, the U.S. Court for Southern District of New York ordered:

“The court is now convinced that it would be improper for BakerHostetler and Moscow to continue as counsel to defendants. …Hermitage’s motion to disqualify BakerHostetler and Moscow as counsel to defendants is granted.”

Hermitage Capital’s representative said of the disqualification of John Moscow and BakerHostetler :

“This disqualification is a stark reminder that lawyers can’t switch sides just because there is money being offered to them.”

Under Rule 1.9 of the New York Rule of Professional Conduct, lawyers are not allowed to betray their former clients. In particular, the rule says:

“A lawyer who has formerly represented a client in a matter shall not thereafter represent another person in the same or a substantially related matter in which that person’s interests are materially adverse to the interests of the former client unless the former client gives informed consent, confirmed in writing.”

Hermitage became the victim of the US$230 million fraud in 2007 when a Russian criminal organisation, comprising FSB, Interior Ministry and tax officials and headed by a convicted fraudster Dmitry Klyuev, raided offices of Hermitage and its law firm in Moscow, unlawfully seized statutory and financial documents for its corporate Russian subsidiaries. Using those documents, the Russian crime group forged contracts and powers of attorney, fraudulently re-registered the stolen Hermitage companies to felons previously convicted for violent crimes, and through sham court proceedings obtained about US$1 billion judgments against the stolen Hermitage companies, in order to claim US$230 million in purportedly “overpaid” taxes.

The fraudulent US$230 million tax refund was granted by Russian tax officials, who were members of the crime group, in one day, and paid out two days later to two small Russian banks, where fraudsters had opened bank accounts, and then laundered through Russian banks and around the world.

Through efforts of Hermitage and law enforcement authorities around the world, about US$40 million connected to the US$230 million fraud uncovered by Sergei Magnitsky have been identified and frozen.

All 12 jurors, plus an alternate, were selected this week to serve on the jury after they made it clear to both sides that they could render a fair and impartial verdict.

Prosecutors and the defense team whittled down a pool of nearly 200 people to 12 jurors and an alternate after having grilled them about their personal histories, political views, social media posts and ability to remain impartial despite any opinions they might have about the polarizing former president.

Trump attorney asks who the DA plans to call as first 3 witnesses

Trump attorney Todd Blanche asked whom the district attorney's office plans to call as its first three witnesses. Joshua Steinglass of the DA’s office refused on the basis that Trump has been tweeting about them.

Judge Merchan said he does not fault the DA’s office for its position. Blanche said Trump will not tweet about the witnesses, which Merchan said Blanche cannot promise, and he told him to treat the information as “attorneys’ eyes only.”

Merchan declined to order the DA’s office to name its first three witnesses, and Steinglass did not otherwise agree to do so.

Trump continues criticizing the case after court proceedings end for the day

Trump addressed reporters after court was dismissed for the day. He said that he was supposed to be in states like Georgia, New Hampshire and North Carolina to campaign but that instead "I've been here all day" for an "unfair trial."

Trump held up a stack of news stories and editorials that he said were critical of the case. He continued railing against the trial. "The whole thing is a mess," he said.

Trump did not respond to shouted questions from reporters.

The jurors were then escorted out of the courtroom and walked past the defense table, from which Trump stared at them.

A potential juror has been brought back into the courtroom for questions about her social media posts.

“I was in a disturbed frame of mind during that election cycle," she said, adding that she no longer holds the positions expressed in the post.

Two more jurors seated, bringing the total to seven

Two new jurors have been seated, bringing the total seated back to seven after two were dismissed earlier.

The jurors are a man who works in investment banking and a man who is a security engineer.

Trump attorney questions juror's social media posts about former president

Susan Necheles, a Trump attorney, is challenging Juror No. 430 for cause.

She alleges that the juror's posts through 2020 were vitriolic and that the juror called Trump a “racist, sexist narcissist” on social media.

Necheles also said the juror said, “Trump is an anathema to everything I was taught about Jesus … and could not be more fundamentally un-Christian.”

Defense lawyer cites book of journalist who is in the courtroom

Trump lawyer Susan Necheles referred to New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman's book "Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America."

Haberman, who is covering the trial, is in the courtroom as part of the small pool of journalists allowed inside to share information about the jury selection process.

One potential juror said it was pretty difficult not to have strong feelings or conversations about Trump during his presidency.

"There’s so much information about him everywhere. So no matter how you feel, you’re seeing things online," she said. "I mean he was our president, everyone knows who he is.”

One juror says they're a centrist and 'everybody needs a chance'

The court has taken a brief break to discuss which jurors each side would like to strike.

Both the prosecution and defense have four remaining preemptory strikes. Both sides could each request that jurors be struck for cause.

Potential juror shares encounter with Trump and ex-wife 'shopping for baby things'

One prospective juror, who says they were born and raised in Brooklyn, described encountering Trump and his ex-wife Marla Maples once while they were "shopping for baby things" at ABC Home, an iconic Manhattan home goods store known for quirky, upscale decor.

Trump and Maples were married in the 1990s and share one daughter, Tiffany Trump.

Prospective juror says she doesn't have 'strong feelings' about Trump

One prospective juror told Trump's lawyer, "His politics aren't always my politics," but said she agrees with him on some policies and disagrees with him on others.

"But as a human being, that's a different topic," she said.

Asked about social media activity, she said, "Politics just seems like a nasty thing to be posting about during a national crisis."

She added, "I just don’t have strong feelings about President Trump at this point...I don’t post about him.”

One juror previously met Trump's lawyer

One of the jurors being questioned by Steinglass says she previously met one of Trump's attorneys.

Asked by Steinglass if this juror could remain impartial despite that, the juror said she had no concerns about her impartiality.

Prosecution refers to 'accomplice liability' to explain case theory

For the second time in a week, the prosecution has used a notable example of “accomplice liability” in explaining their theory of the case to the prospective jurors.

Steinglass says that Mr. Trump is being held liable just like a husband who hires a hitman to kill his wife would be — even if the husband is in a different city when it happens, he’s still criminally liable.

One juror says she's concerned she knows too much about the case

One prospective jurors who said during the questionnaire that she had read Mark Pomerantz's book and was worried she knows too much about the case.

"I’m worried that I know too much," she said. “And academically, I know I have put it to the side. I’m worried that it’s going to seep in, in some way.”

Pomerantz is a former prosecutor who once oversaw the Manhattan District Attorney Office’s investigation into Trump.

Trump appears skeptical as voir dire begins

Trump watched skeptically as Steinglass asked the jurors whether any of them felt the district attorney would have to prove more because Trump is not like any other defendant.

Trump's body is not turned toward the jury or Steinglass, but his head is. Blanche and Bove are watching Steinglass and the jury more intently.

Trump then scribbled on a piece of paper and handed it to Bove, who shared it with Necheles. She then had a short exchange with Trump.

Judge Merchan says voir dire of prospective jurors will begin

The judge told the group of 18 prospective jurors that previously went through the questionnaire that they will now be questioned by both sides, with the prosecution up first.

Merchan is back on the bench and court is back in session. Attorneys for both sides will now question prospective jurors.

Spotted outside of the courthouse: former GOP Rep. George Santos

Former Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., was spotted outside of the courthouse. He did not answer a question from NBC News about what brought him here today.

Santos was ejected from Congress in December after he was federally charged with crimes like wire fraud and money laundering. He has pleaded not guilty. He is currently running for Congress in New York as an independent.

Juror dismissed after tying Trump to Berlusconi

One juror was just dismissed after disclosing that he was born and raised in Italy and then comparing Trump to Silvio Berlusconi, the former prime minister of Italy.

Berlusconi, who died last June, was an infamous womanizer and was convicted of tax fraud in 2013.

Potential juror says he's a few credits short of a college degree

One potential juror said that while he graduated from high school, he is a few credits short of a college degree, "which kills my parents."

A cold courtroom

Blanche, Trump's lawyer, just asked if they could make it warmer in the courtroom, saying, "it’s freezing" in the room.

Merchan agreed, "It’s chilly in here, no question."

After they had a conference with the juror, Merchan announced he's excusing juror No. 4, who had previously been seated and sworn him. His prior arrest was questioned by the DA.

Seated juror 'expressed annoyance' about his personal information becoming public

A seated juror was called for questioning, with prosecutors inquiring about whether or not he was truthful in answering questions about his past criminal history.

Following a conference between the juror and Merchan, the judge said, the juror "expressed annoyance about how much information was out there about him in the public.”

And Merchan sealed the portion of the transcript where he says the juror discussed "highly personal" information.

Trump left the courtroom while decision on Juror 4 being made

Trump exited the courtroom at 11:45 a.m. He returned about eight minutes later.

One prospective juror works in law enforcement

One potential juror said that he has worked in law enforcement for 34 years and, in his spare time, he has season tickets to New York Rangers games and enjoys going to Yankees games.

Dismissed juror has "satirized Mr. Trump, often" online

Another dismissed juror, Mark, spoke to NBC News' Vaughn Hillyard outside the courthouse, telling him that he determined he couldn't be fair and impartial because, "I have satirized Mr. Trump, often, in my artwork."

Mark added, "There’s no way that Blanche — who’s not going to rely on the kindness of strangers — would permit me to be on the jury ... There’s no way that after my online presence ... that they would regard me to be fit to serve."

Mark's online comedy hadn't yet come up in the process when he raised his hand to signal he couldn't be fair and impartial, but he was sure Trump's lawyers would figure it out.

"It would be a waste of their time and, frankly, as a taxpayer, our money —for me to clog up the process," he added.

Juror 4 has arrived

The person previously seated on the jury has come into the courtroom. He is going to be asked about crimes he or his wife are alleged to have committed, after they were unearthed by the DA's office.

One juror has read part of Michael Cohen's book

One of the jurors responding to questions said she has read several pages of "Disloyal," a book by Michael Cohen, Trump's former personal attorney, who is a potential witness in this case.

The juror said she read part of the book for unspecified "business reasons." Earlier in her questionnaire, the juror said she works in publishing, but it's unclear whether the book was directly related to her job.

Prospective juror says while he doesn't have strong beliefs aboutTrump, he does read The New York Times

A prospective juror who was just questioned said that while he doesn't have any strong opinions or firmly held beliefs about Trump, he does "read the news, New York Times and so forth."

The same person said he follows Trump's Truth Social posts, as well as Michael Cohen on X.

Potential jurors say they have read Trump's "The Art of the Deal"

One potential juror who said she subscribes to The New York Times, mainly for the crossword puzzle, said she read Trump's "The Art of the Deal" book decades ago.

The juror also said she has a relative who works for the Justice Department.

Another juror, who said he works in finance, also said he read "The Art of the Deal."

Questionnaire highlights tension points for potential jurors

The potential juror being questioned now by the judge encapsulates how tough it is for some working professionals called for jury duty in Manhattan to say they cannot be fair and impartial. This is a person who is a practicing attorney.

She appears not to want to say publicly she can’t be fair, notwithstanding some deep sighs we can hear from her. She also clerked for a federal judge and discussed the case with him, so she’s treading carefully.

Dismissed juror: Trump "looked less orange" than I expected

One dismissed juror spoke to MSNBC's Yasmin Vossoughian outside the courthouse following her exit from the case.

"Everyone was shocked, everyone was frozen," said the woman, identified only by her first name, Kat. She recounted the moment she and fellow prospective jurors walked into the room and realized they'd been called for the Trump trial.

“We went into the courtroom and we saw Donald Trump ... I was shocked, I was sitting in the second row, like 6 feet away," she added.

Before showing up for jury duty, “I didn’t really [follow the case], I was too busy," Kat said, but added that she just became a U.S. citizen in August and realized, "I feel the duty, I’m a citizen and I have responsibilities.”

Asked about how Trump looked in the courtroom, Kat said, "He looked less orange" than she was expecting.

She added, “He doesn’t look angry or — I think he looks bored, like he wants this to finish.”

Potential juror said she discussed former Manhattan DA Mark Pomerantz's book with others

The first potential juror said she had discussed the case at length with co-workers, including a book written by Mark Pomerantz , the former Manhattan district attorney who led the investigation into Trump’s alleged financial crimes . She said she hasn't read any of the books written by Michael Cohen or Trump.

The woman also disclosed that she attended the Women's March after Trump took office.

48 prospective jurors excused after signaling they can't be fair or impartial

After Judge Merchan told the pool of prospective jurors to raise their hand if they can't be fair and impartial, 48 out of 96 were excused.

Trump again closes his eyes while Merchan reads jury instructions aloud

Trump again closed his eyes while Merchan read aloud jury instructions. He didn't open them when his lawyer Emil Bove passed a note to Blanche in front of him.

Merchan is soft-spoken and his voice has a relaxing tone. Trump is seen moving his head back and forth while his eyes remain closed.

Trump yawned as Merchan reached the end of the jury instruction.

Juror issues raise questions about trial timeline

The fact that we now have one juror dismissed already this morning and one potentially on the rocks (for apparently not being forthcoming on the questionnaire) shows the challenges in predicting when a final slate of 12 jurors will be empaneled.

It also shows how waiting several more days before the opening statements runs the risk that more jurors will drop out as they sleep on the gravity of being involved in this case.

DA's office says Trump has violated judge's gag order seven more times

Prosecutor Chris Conroy handed up a new order in response to Trump's social media posts. The DA alleges that Trump has violated the judge's gag order seven more times and he wants the posts included in the hearing scheduled for Tuesday.

Yesterday, the former president complained about the jury selection process and Conroy said that "most disturbingly" Trump quoted a Fox News host suggesting that "undercover" liberal activists are lying to get onto the jury.

Conroy said the DA's office is still considering options in terms of sanctions prosecutors are seeking.

Merchan raises concerns about "the veracity of Juror #4’s answers"

After discussion about the gag order, Merchan said he had concerns about one of the jurors and how truthfully the person had answered questions.

One of the questions on the juror questionnaire asks if the juror or any of their family members were accused of a crime.

Joshua Steinglass of the DA's office told Merchan that they discovered an article featuring a person with the same name who was arrested in Westchester in the 1990s for tearing down political advertisements.

Merchan implores the press to use 'common sense' when reporting jurors' descriptions

Merchan asked reporters to use "common sense" when describing the jurors' physical descriptions.

"There was really no need to mention that one of the jurors had an Irish accent," he said.

A juror has been excused from duty

Juror 2, the oncology nurse, has been excused from duty. As court started today, Merchan told lawyers on both sides that the juror called and conveyed that after sleeping on it, she had concerns about being fair and impartial.

She had concerns about her identity becoming public and said that friends and family have already inquired about whether she is a juror. The juror added that given these outside influences, she was concerned about her ability to be fair and impartial.

The first seven people were selected to serve on the jury in Trump’s hush money trial in New York on Tuesday after they made it clear to both sides that they could render a fair and impartial verdict.

They were chosen on the second day of the trial after prosecutors and the defense team whittled down a group of 96 potential jurors . At one point, Merchan admonished Trump after he observed him audibly mouthing something in the direction of one of the jurors, who had been asked about a social media post she made the day Joe Biden was declared the winner of the 2020 election.

“I won’t tolerate that,” Merchan said. “I will not have any jurors intimidated in this courtroom.” Trump’s lawyers ultimately eliminated the woman from the jury pool.

The seven chosen so far were sworn in Tuesday and directed by Merchan to return to court Monday.

Twelve people will be seated on the jury, and each side will select alternates. The trial is expected to last as long as eight weeks.

Prosecutors seek to ask Trump about civil fraud, E. Jean Carroll cases and more if he testifies in hush money case

Prosecutors from the Manhattan district attorney’s office said in a court filing yesterday that they plan to ask Trump about the costly verdicts and findings of wrongdoing in his numerous civil cases if the former president decides to testify in the criminal case — though the permissibility of that line of questioning remains to be seen.

The prosecutors said they intend to ask Trump about the judgment in New York Attorney General Letitia James’ civil fraud suit against him and his company, as well as a pair of verdicts in lawsuits brought by writer E. Jean Carroll. The judgments in the three cases total almost $550 million and include findings that Trump committed fraud in the AG’s case and that he is liable for sexual abuse and defamation in the Carroll case.

District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office also plans to mention findings by the judge in the civil fraud case that Trump violated a gag order and “ testified untruthfully under oath” during the trial.

Prosecutors said they want to be able to bring up those findings — which Trump is appealing — “to impeach the credibility of the defendant” if he takes the witness stand.

Trump said last week he “absolutely“ plans to testify but is under no obligation to do so.

Trump lawyers in Florida classified docs case seek more time to meet deadlines in order to "defend him in New York and before this Court"

In a filing today, Trump’s legal team representing him in the classified documents against him in Florida are seeking more time to meet deadlines in order for them to “defend him in New York and before this Court.”

Trump’s lawyers argue that their client and his counsel “cannot prepare — or even discuss — the required filings anywhere but an appropriate SCIF (sensitive compartmented information facility), a virtually impossible task given” the former president and his lawyers Blanche and Emil Bove’s involvement in the hush money trial.

“The special counsel’s office argues President Trump’s constitutional rights are ‘not implicated’ because his counsel has had ‘months to prepare the submissions at issue’ and will ‘only be in trial four days a week in New York,’” Trump’s lawyers wrote in the filing. “This premise is untethered to reality and disregards the substantial motion practice that has occurred before this Court.”

Fiery exchanges over Facebook posts and Trump’s behavior mark second day of trial

The first seven jurors were selected for Trump’s hush money trial Tuesday amid a battle over prospective jurors’ old Facebook posts and calls to “lock him up” and the judge’s warning that the former president should not try to intimidate the panelists who will be deciding his fate.

“I will not have any jurors intimidated in this courtroom. I want to make this crystal clear,” Merchan told Trump and Blanche outside the jurors' presence. Merchan told Blanche his client was “audibly” saying something in the direction of the juror while she was “12 feet away from your client.”

Merchan said that he didn’t know what Trump was saying but that he’d been “muttering” and “gesturing” at the juror, and he directed Blanche to talk to his client about his behavior. Blanche then whispered something into Trump’s ear.

The incident underscores Trump’s penchant for acting up in court and the problems his lawyers might have keeping him in check. He spoke loudly in front of jurors during the E. Jean Carroll defamation trial and at one point stormed out of his civil fraud trial — two trials he appeared at voluntarily. His presence is required in the criminal case, and the trial could last as long as eight weeks.

The current drama came on the second day of jury selection as seven jurors were selected for the case. The jury is anonymous, so their names weren’t used in open court, but panelists include a lawyer, a salesman, an oncology nurse, an IT consultant, a teacher and a software engineer. The seven were sworn in and told to return to court Monday.

On trial off-day, Trump complains about jury selection process for his criminal case

Trump ripped the jury selection process in his historic New York criminal trial yesterday, the day after the first seven jurors were selected out of a pool of almost 100 people.

Posting about the hush money trial on its scheduled off-day, Trump — who has repeatedly accused the judge in the case of being biased against him — suggested incorrectly that he should be entitled to unlimited strikes of potential jurors in his criminal case.

“I thought STRIKES were supposed to be ‘unlimited’ when we were picking our jury? I was then told we only had 10, not nearly enough when we were purposely given the 2nd Worst Venue in the Country,” he wrote on Truth Social before he decried the criminal cases against him as “election interference” and part of a “witch hunt.”

Under New York law, each side does have an unlimited number of strikes “for cause,” but Merchan, the judge presiding over the case, can decide whether or not that cause is worthy of a strike.

The two sides are also entitled to a limited number of “peremptory strikes” — potential jurors they can dismiss. Because Trump is charged with a Class E felony, which is a lower-level felony, he and prosecutors are entitled to 10 peremptory challenges each. (The number goes up to 20 for defendants facing the highest level of felony charge, Class A.)

While Merchan has dismissed scores of potential jurors who said they could not be impartial or had scheduling conflicts, he has dismissed only two for cause in the two days since jury selection began . One was a person who had written “lock him up” of Trump in a 2017 social media post. Merchan denied some other Trump cause dismissal requests, including one for a woman who had posted on Facebook about celebrating Joe Biden’s 2020 election win.

Trump hush money trial resumes with jury selection after day off

Jury selection is set to resume in former President Donald Trump's hush money trial in New York City after a break in action yesterday.

With seven jurors already having been selected from a pool of 96, the schedule for today will focus largely on questioning potential jurors in a second group of the same size to see whether they can be fair and impartial when it comes to Trump. State Judge Juan Merchan has said he hopes to have 12 jurors, as well as alternates, selected by the end of tomorrow.

Prosecutors and lawyers for Trump will have less opportunity to dismiss potential jurors going forward, because both used six of their 10 peremptory challenges Tuesday.

While both sides can make an unlimited number of challenges for cause, it is up to the judge to decide whether to grant those challenges and strike those jurors. Merchan dismissed two jurors for cause Tuesday, one of whom had posted a “lock him up” message about Trump on Facebook, but he denied some other challenges.
