25. Wheel of Names

The Wheel of Names is a fun game that is perfect for using it as a spinner.

For example, you can use it to choose who goes next. Or put vocabulary words in the boxes and then spin and have your student define their vocabulary words.

Another idea is to work on synonyms or antonyms. Place different words, such as big or tall in the spinner and then hit spin. The child then says the best synonym or antonym for that word.

27 Free Online Games for Speech Therapy You Need to Know About

Online games that are quick to play are perfect for speech teletherapy.

Like many SLPs right now, I’m a newly minted teletherapist due to school closures during the COVID 19 pandemic. After three months of diving into speech therapy telepractice this spring, I quickly realized that I need more tricks up my sleeve to keep my students engaged with me online! Thirty minutes of pure drill time wasn’t cutting it. It wasn’t long before they started looking at me with eyes that said “What else have you got?”

And…like a bunch of you, I’ll be headed back to school seeing my students online, at least for now. So it’s time to gather up some great resources to keep participation and interest high!

It’s important to mix it up with a variety of activities to keep students engaged during online speech therapy sessions.

Especially the youngest ones. Gee- in that respect it’s not unlike in-person sessions, is it?

I may have 2-3 different activities during a session. including books, real games (I take their “turn” for them in front of the camera), puppets, toys for the younger crowd, riddles, and worksheets we could draw or write on with annotation tools. I also love Boom Cards  and digital resources like interactive pdfs. I like to get my kiddos up and moving sometimes too. We all need that!

Online games are a favorite activity for my speech therapy students.

No prep for you, fun for them. If you are using a platform like Zoom where you can give your students control, any of these games are great. If you can’t give students control, look at the online board games that automatically advance. You can click the dice for your students.

ABCya   Lots of “Make-a” games and holiday games for little ones…Some games require Flash Player. PBS Kids   Simple games with characters kids like such as Clifford, Sesame Street, or Arthur.

Happy Clicks   I love this site of super-easy activities for very young learners

Easiest online games for early learners:

Make an Icecream  build your Ice cream

Fruit Fall  Help the farmer catch the fruit in his basket.

Helipopper  The monster is flying with a helicopter hat. Pop the balloons that match the color of his hat. Requires paying attention to changing hat color.

Open-ended online games for all grades

Desert Dive:  Big Blue and his friend are on a see-saw, drag Big Blue up, and drop him to make his friend splash into the pool.

Spaceship Maze  Guide your spaceship through the maze. Starts easy and each maze becomes a bit more challenging.

Turtle Wax  Raise and lower the slide, then let the turtle slide down. Can you make him hit the target?

Play Tic Tac Toe   play the computer or another player

Online board games:

These games automatically play when you click the dice. fast and easy.

Snakes and Ladders  Roll the Dice and your game piece automatically moves. Play with 1-2 players, or establish teams in a group.

The Goose Game: Roll the dice to advance. Some spaces are luck, some are not! Up to 6 players

These games require you to move the pieces. Some are strategy games best for older kids.

Checkers  for 1-2 players or teams

BackGammon strategy game for older kids

Reversi Another strategy game for older kids. 1-2 players.

Games that are a bit more challenging:

Treasure Dive: The diver must avoid the sea creatures as he collects the gold from the treasure chest.

Word Turtle Create your own word search. Two levels of difficulty. Greate for articulation generating synonyms, antonyms, or category members Visual Memory Puzzle Study the colored circles on the grid before they disappear. Can you re-create the pattern? Becomes progressively harder.

Poki Cut the Rope Feed the monster strategy game

Online dice and spinners for any game

Toy theater is great for these. These can be a game in themselves. Who will rack up the most points? Throw the dice or spin a spinner.

Dice:  Colorful online dice in many shapes and sizes

Spinners; Choose spinners for either colors or numbers. You can choose how many spaces on the spinner too!

Online games are great to use in in-person therapy too.

Play them on a  tablet, computer or project them on a whiteboard for instant engagement. Huge bonus- you don’t have to lug these around as you travel from school to school or setting!

For many families with school-aged children, summer’s easy schedule is a welcome break from those early school mornings: alarm clocks, lunch-making, carpools, homework. But, for families who still crave a bit of a schedule and structure, summer can be somewhat anxiety-producing. Fear not. StoryPlace.org  is a terrific website that has a number of online games and interactive activities for preschoolers and elementary-aged students. Each preschool theme includes an online story, online activity, printable “take home” activities and suggestions for parents.  Each theme also offers a book list that corresponds with each particular lesson.

FunwithSpot.com  is an interactive website for preschoolers and young children that includes options to play language-based games related to the Spot Series of books, parent (and teacher) resources, access to information about author Eric Hill and opportunities to purchase products and books about Spot.

PBSkids.org: Between the Lions   You may have seen this television show .  PBS Kids’ Between the Lions website offers many language games and literacy activities for preschool and elementary-aged children. They also offer a kid’s encyclopedia and a safe image search for kids. This could be a fun way to research with students during a speech therapy session focusing on comprehension, vocabulary, and comparing and contrasting. For example, I typed in “sharks vs dolphins”, and the search engine provided me with an article from Time for Kids about that topic. 

Art for Kids  could be a wonderful, motivating tool for elementary students and older students. Your students could listen closely and follow the directions and examples to create their own drawings. 

Time for Kids  is such a great tool for speech therapy. Search for articles written for kids to target reading comprehension or a variety of receptive and expressive language skills. 

National Geographic Kids  is a fantastic interactive website that SLPs could use for speech and language development. This website provides games, videos, articles, and more! 

Mysteryscience.com  is technically for science teachers, but there’s no reason that SLPs couldn’t use this website to help increase communication skills! 

Free Online Speech Therapy Games for Language

StarFall Education  offers educational interactive games and activities. Some games are free, while other games require a subscription to play. 

Toy Theater has a  Language Arts section  that has some great tools for receptive and expressive language, including this digital drag ‘n drop  story sequence activity .

Pink Cat Games  offers a variety of popular games and language activities and language games for speech-language pathology. This is a subscription service website, but it has free games to check out. Try targeting wh questions! 

Speech pathologists can try using  Tiny Tap  to create games for receptive and expressive language therapy! Check out this  Youtube tutorial  to see how to get started. 

Need to create digital flash cards? Try using a website like  Quizlet . 

Turtle Diary has some digital games that target language skills such as verbs, adverbs, and adjectives. 

6 Free Online Speech Therapy Articulation Activities

Pink Cat Games  is a must for speech pathologists to check out, especially for articulation games. A variety of different sounds are targeted. Pink Cat Games are very motivating and provide interactive activities for speech therapy sessions! My son especially loved the “Feed the Shark” and “Build a Monster” games. These games were both very beneficial for articulation practice. As my son practiced words and fed the shark, it grew larger, which made him laugh out loud. 

I love using the free spinner on  Wheel of Names  for articulation therapy. Just type in articulation words in your list, then click to spin the spinner. It will land on a target word that your student can practice saying.

Printable Online Speech Therapy Activities

These websites contain great printable worksheets, activities, and board games that speech-language pathologists could print out to use in speech therapy. Hands-on, printable activities and worksheets can always be paired with digital games and activities as well. Check out the websites provided to find new materials to use during a speech and language session. These worksheets target a variety of speech and language objectives, including irregular past tense verbs, idioms, conjunctions, prepositions, and more. In addition, there are some graphic organizer worksheets that can assist with story retelling and describing similarities and differences between two items. 

The website  Free Language Stuff  contains free printable worksheets that can be used in speech therapy. Topics include irregular past tense verbs, idioms, conjunctions, and more.

Teachers Pay Teachers (TpT) contains a variety of free and paid speech and language activities that SLPs can use for speech therapy.  Check out my TpT store here !  

I love  MeddyBemps  for spatial concepts! There are printables included which provide a great way to teach your students prepositions. 

Need some printable graphic organizers? Check out this  Venn diagram  from ReadWriteThink! Venn diagrams can be used when describing similarities and differences between two items. Another great organizer includes this  essay map  to provide main idea and details.

Elementary students would benefit from filling out this  story map worksheet  from Education.com. This is another  story elements worksheet  that SLPs might wish to try out during a speech therapy session. This can be useful when students are working on retelling stories during a speech therapy session. 

Teach-nology  also offers a variety of printable materials and worksheets, including graphic organizers, that could be useful during a speech and language therapy session. Some options include concept webs and main idea maps.

Online Tools for Speech Therapists

Speech language pathologists may wish to check out  ipa.typeit.org , which provides a keyboard with IPA symbols. 

Need evidenced-based information but don’t have time to read all those articles in the middle of a busy day? I highly recommend  theinformedslp.com . The best part about it is that you can earn CEUs by listening to (or reading) quick articles. 

If you have technology questions, then the YouTube channel  Teacher’s Tech  has the answers! You can learn the basics of how to access a variety of online tools and technology to make (SLP) life a bit easier. There are tutorials like The  Basics of Google Classroom ,  Gmail tutorials , and more!

SLPs might wish to access free digital books to use in speech therapy. One website that SLPs might wish to check out is  getepic.com/educators . Check out more ideas for  children’s books for speech therapy . 

In summary, there are many free online speech therapy games, activities, tools, and websites that can allow speech pathologists to address a variety of communication skills during therapy sessions. Games and reinforcers can be used to increase a child’s attention, motivation, and enjoyment during a speech therapy session. Speech-language pathologists might also try visiting educational sites during a session to find relevant, high-interest articles that could be used to target a variety of speech and language objectives. An online safe search tool, such as Kiddle, could be a resource to check out as well. Finally, speech pathologists will be able to find a variety of online speech therapy games and activities, both digital and printable, on a variety of websites.

Free online speech therapy games for teletherapy are at the top of many SLPs’ lists! Be sure to check out this article if you’re wondering what makes a good online speech therapy game.

I originally wrote this article back at the very beginning of the pandemic, I’m finding it’s still relevant due to the rise in the number of SLPs doing teletherapy now. The list below contains many free teletherapy resources to make your life a little bit easier! One other thing worth mentioning is that these resources are also great for in-person sessions too!

Online Speech Therapy Board Games Perfect for Teletherapy

After working on making these online board games for two years, they are finally ready to use and available in our materials library.

13 Online Speech Therapy Board Games

I created 13 beautiful and creative online speech therapy board games with over 150+ therapy targets and 10,000+ real life images!

The online speech therapy board games can be used for all ages, preschool through high school. Our creative designs are fun and engaging for students and easy for the SLP to use to target many goals.

The games have all different themes including, desserts, water park, skiing, vacation, camping, life, winter, and so much more!

When you click into the game, a screen appears where you can select your speech therapy target from 150+ options. The therapy targets include articulation, expressive language, receptive language, and pragmatics.

You can even select more than one target for the game to work on more than one goal within the same game.

How to Use these Online Games with Your Students:

These online speech therapy board games are perfect for teletherapy! You can easily screen share when you have the website open.

I designed the online speech therapy games for teletherapy as I wanted to have games for my students to play that were engaging, yet required minimal prep work. I use these games with my students every day in our teletherapy sessions. Since there is a wide range of themes to use, I can use them with my preschool students and even my high school students. They all love the games and ask to play them every session.

The games were made to be just like in-person board games that are commonly used in speech therapy sessions, except even better because there are 150+ card decks built in. So, that means zero prep for the SLP!

You can play with up to 6 players and even select different targets for each player.

To play one of the speech therapy games, just select your game pieces, select your therapy target (ex. Conversational Turn-Taking), and play! It’s that simple!

During the game you use the spinner to spin each turn, drag and drop your game pieces, and click on the card deck to pull up a card.

Therapy Targets Built into the Games

There are over 150+ (and counting) card deck therapy targets built into the game.

The options for targets in the game include articulation of every speech sound in every word position, expressive language, receptive language, and pragmatics. Each card in every card deck has an image for visual support.

Examples of expressive and receptive language targets in the game include wh- questions, inferencing, story retell, naming and categorizing, synonyms, antonyms, following directions (1-step, 2-step and conditional), and many more!

Examples of some of the pragmatic targets in the game include interpreting facial expressions and body language, conversational turn-taking, social problem solving, and more.

I am using Theraplatform with my clients for Teletherapy. I am able to screen share but it’s not allowing my clients to gain access to the mouse/remote control.

Hi! Yes, you can screen share our games and share keyboard/mouse control. That way your students can interact with the games and activities. Almost all platforms allow you to share keyboard/mouse control. Do you know if G-Suite has an option to share keyboard/mouse control? I haven’t used that platform myself.

Unfortunately Google meet does not allow remote control a mouse, as far as I know on the zoom does, but my district isn’t allowed to use Zoom because apparently it’s not HIPAA compliant

Hi! We provide all of the games and materials for you to use. You will need to use a platform, like Zoom or GotoMeeting to be able to have video of each other (other platforms work as well, those are just a few). It is best to use a platform that allows you to screen share and share keyboard/mouse control. That way the students will be able to interact with the games and activities.

Hi Barbaa, Yes they do work on Theraplatform. Theraplatform allows you to screen share our site and also share keyboard/mouse control, so you students will be able to interact with the games.

Hi Margot, most platforms have a simple button to click to share your screen. I haven’t used Google Classroom myself. Is there a button to select to screen share? With the platform I use, I open our site then within the platform, click to screen share.

I was going to ask the exact same question as Cathy. I would like to assign students practice games and activities through google classroom. This looks like an excellent resource for SLP’s and I was ready to sign up until I read that students can’t access. I think most school based SLP’s are scrambling to make E-Learning/Distance Learning meaningful for our students during this pandemic as they learning from home.

Yes, you can screen share the materials in their platform. However, their platform does not have the option to share keyboard/mouse control for students. So, you would have to click for your student.

Unfortunately, my district is not allowed to do direct teletherapy because we don’t have the appropriate license in my state. We are, however, encourage to share resources and links for home practice as well as suggestions of how to use them. Could these resources be used in such a way at all? Yes, it can be used in Google Meets. You can screen share the materials. I’m not sure if Google has the feature of sharing keyboard/mouse control, so you just may need to click in the materials for the student.

Hi Vidya, yes we have cards for all speech sounds in all positions for words and most phrases and sentences. We have a fun Go Fish type of game (with card decks for all speech sounds and language/pragmatics). All of our pictures are real life pictures, except for our What’s Wrong images. We have card decks for language skills, but we do not have any children’s books.

I love your games and have signed up for a trial membership! I understand that this site was created for teletherapy which traditionally has one student/client working with the SLP, but because of our current situation (Covid19), I have 3-4 students in each of my online therapy groups. Do you have or could you make an articulation game with multiple speech sounds such as a game that targets /r/, /s/, /l/, and “th” which are the most common sounds I treat. I often have groups where each student may be working on a different sound so a game with only one sound wouldn’t work very well.

Hi! I came across your materials on a shared Facebook post. All the comments raved about your site. Currently, I am doing teletherapy because of the COVID-19 situation, but normally provide services in the home. I was wondering if there is any way to customize cards within the game board games. For example, if I wanted to put in specific speech sound targets (e.g., CV only) or a specific Wh question category (e.g., where only)? Can the membership be put on hold for July and August and then resume in September if schools are still not back in regular session. Would I have to cancel and then renew?

I’m thoroughly enjoying your website and it has really helped tele-therapy go more smoothly. I love the interactive games and my students love the spinners. I would recommend adding in some sounds because the kids love to hear a ding or bell when they get something correct.

My district is not allowing us to use teletherapy at this time. Is there a way for students to complete tasks and send them back via google classroom or google slides?

Our materials are designed to be used during teletherapy sessions via screen sharing. We do not currently have a way to send them home to parents to access in a separate way. We are looking into setting that up in the future.

Is there a way to select target words? For example, I don’t want to use the word ‘span’ with my 4yo student. I’ve also noticed that s-blends come up when I’ve selected /s/ initial. Is there a way to get /s/ initial words that don’t begin with a blend? Is there a way to go in and select the words I want to use from the list?

Also, very picky-but on the race car game, the cars move around the track backward. Any way to get them turned around?

We are adding more of the large image card decks for younger students. We should have almost all of them available this coming weekend for every sound in every position. We will get the car to flip at the turns 🙂

I’m enjoying using your site. I’m wondering how I can go about customizing what cards a student sees in a game. For example, if I select Wh questions during a game and want use Wh questions again in another game the next session, how can I skip the cards we’ve already done? It seems like it always shows the same cards first. Thanks

Hi! The cards should rotate each time you play, that way you get a new one each time you start the game.

Hi…I love this site….thank you for the 2 weeks it’s great to see how it works and I def want to continue using this. I tried to share my keyboard on zoom and it won’t let my students control the games so I have to click it for them. I am not sure if I am doing something wrong but I see the drop down to share keyboard etc. and nothing happens…any suggestions?

Hi and thank you SO MUCH for this amazing website. I use this frequently in tele-therapy sessions. I would love it if there was an option to add our own decks for games. For example, blending and segmenting CVC words, more short stories for retell, academic vocabulary presented in sentences to infer using context clues, etc. I would be more than willing to help in any way I can to help you add more content.

I am looking for a how to on particular games– like the Guess Who style game– how is that played since I can see the game piece that the client selected? (but he can’t see mine) I don’t get it…. Am I just supposed to pretend I don’t see it?

In the game, it pops up with a message to cover the left side of your board to hide the student’s piece. With the screen sharing format, that was the best solution we could figure out in order to allow the student to be able to see their piece. That way they can look at the one they chose to answer questions.

My district will only allow us to use Google Meet this year. Is your program compatible with Google Meet? If not, what programs is Ultimate SLP compatible with??

Great for Telepractice

Telepractice is the application of telecommunications technology (such as online classrooms and chat software) for the delivery of speech-language pathology services at a distance by linking the speech-language pathologist to their client or student from far away. It can be used for testing to determine speech therapy eligibility, as well as direct treatment of communication disorders and consultations with families. Telepractice applications can include schools, medical centers, rehabilitation hospitals, community health centers, outpatient clinics, universities, clients' homes, residential health care facilities, child care centers, and corporate settings. There are no limits to where telepractice can be implemented, as long as there is an internet connection, a speech-language pathologist, and a communication partner who is ready to learn. This can be especially helpful for individuals in rural areas, or where physical disabilities may limit access, or for students attending school from home.

Even though this site is designed for teletherapists, the exact same tools can be used in a face-to-face therapy setting with computer and internet access.

Great for families

Research shows that when school-aged children practice speech and language skills more often, they make more progress in their communication skills. Even practicing speech their five minutes a day will improve a student's carryover, where they learn to apply their skills in areas outside speech therapy sessions, such as in the classroom, on the playground, or at home.

Where to Start

The activities in this site are organized in two different ways: by developmental level and by area of communication. The left side of the menu at the top has speech and language activities organized by developmental level, or by certain milestones that children are expected to achieve by certain ages. The suggested ages given below are based on typical development, so some students with moderate to severe communication delays or disorders may need to work at a level that is below their real age. For older students, reading levels also may have an impact on what level is best for them.

• Emerging activities are targeted at students developing language for the first time, and would be great for preschool students. The vocabulary is simple and functional, including many household objects and core vocabulary. This section would also be a great resource for students using AAC devices and still learning the meaning of core vocabulary.
• Developing activities are targeted at students in grades K-2, who are learning early reading skills and seeing a wide expansion of their vocabulary. In this section, there is a broader set of terms that may support elementary science, history, or reading academic content.
• Expanding activities are targeted at students in grades 3-5, who are developing more reading skills and expanding their vocabulary into more specific and complex terms or concepts, especially ones that they may not have been exposed to before. Aside from additional vocabulary expansion, multicultural concepts are introduced in this section, and the activities demand a higher level of thought and complexity in each answer.
• Perfecting activities are intended for students in grades 6+, who should be reading at near-adult levels and able to engage complexly and deeply with content, and is asking students to engage with high-level concepts as well as develop tools to understand words or concepts they've never seen before using the skills they have.

The right side of the menu at the top has speech and language activities organized by area of speech. Speech-language pathologists are professionally trained to provide intervention in five domains of communication: articulation, language, fluency, pragmatics, and voice. Each section will have games and activities that target each area.

• Articulation contains activities to target issues with speech sounds, to support someone who is difficult to understand, can't pronounce certain words/sounds, leaves out sounds in words, or replaces one sound with another.
• Language contains activities to target expressive and receptive language, which would support someone who has difficulty with asking questions, answering questions, forming grammatically correct sentences, and finding relationships between concepts.
• Social contains activities to target pragmatic and social language, which would support someone who has difficulty talking to others their same age, staying on topic in conversation, appropriately adding to conversations, and solving social conflicts.
• Fluency contains activities to target stuttering, which would support someone who may repeat sounds in words, have blocks while talking where they're unable to speak, or insert sounds or pauses into their speech.

How to play

Prepare a collection of word cards each with a familiar noun on it. You'll need at least 100. They could be names of famous people, common objects, colors, animals ... For example : bird, wheelbarrow, hammer, cow, witch, moon, grass, hat, elephant, computer, book, vase, elbow, photo, green, candlestick, shoe, painting, mug, plane, eclipse, Queen Elizabeth,  operation, halo, knife, eye, storm, girl, pillow, lid, thermometer, jungle, barn, wheel, thistle, steam, mud, bike, pink, Madonna  ...

Put the word cards into box or non-see through bag.

A player picks two cards and then must immediately begin telling a story connecting both words together convincingly. The story needn't be long, (one to two minutes is enough), complicated, or true!

Once your class is comfortable with connecting two words, add to your word collection and increase the number of cards selected to three or even four.

What this game teaches

In a word - transitions!

Moving from one idea to another smoothly, in a way that can be readily understood and followed by your audience, is a must-have public speaking skill.

Connect the Dots gives people the opportunity to practice.   It doesn't matter how disparate the "dots" or ideas  appear to be, a way can be found to link them, and with practice the ability to make those connections will become stronger and stronger.

An added benefit of the game is listening and learning from each other.

Connect the Dots - an example story

I've picked my two words. They are Queen Elizabeth and bike, and here's my speech!

"When you think of Queen Elizabeth, what do you see in your mind? Do you see an older woman wearing a diamond studded tiara staring grimly into the camera?

That diagonal sash across her chest proclaims dominion over the commonwealth realms. These include countries as diverse as Canada and Barbados - 32 of them in all. That's serious leadership - around 128 million people, including Prince Phillip, her husband, their four adult children, assorted wives and grandchildren.

Her daily duties would make most of us wince. She answers letters, talks to government officials, reads briefing papers, plans her diary, makes calls to charities, hospitals, factories, schools, museums or military units, performs civic duties like openings and investitures, and tours . That routine hasn't varied for the last 56 years. The Queen is an institution, revered and respected.

But she's also a person. And despite how difficult it may be to imagine, she'll have good days, bad days and days when, in the words of Cyndi Lauper, a girl just wants to have fun.

In my imagination, she wants to poke her tongue out at all the 'must and mustn't dos', toss the tiara sideways and shuck off the designer gowns.

She'd like to walk barefoot through wet grass and float on her back down a summer stream blowing bubbles. She'd like to gallop a horse around Hyde Park without a minder and in the afternoon ride a bike. Starting at the top of Primrose Hill she'll fly down, pedals whirring, yelling 'Look Ma no hands.' It will be glorious. It will be wonderful, and she will be free.

Perhaps it was a glimpse into unfettered being that convinced her to take up sky-diving with James Bond for opening of the 2012 Olympics. 86 years old and starring in a royal performance. She showed us. It's never too late to 'get on yer bike' in whatever form it takes. God save the Queen!"

2. Tell us the history of ...

Prepare a starter list of events or things. Write them on slips of paper.

For example: a postage stamp, birthday cake, books, a zebra's stripes, a chimney, the tooth fairy, common sayings like 'a penny for your thoughts', 'a red rag to a bull', 'a pinch and a punch for the first of the month', April Fools Day, a wheel, a Christmas tree, ice cream, a ladder, Father Christmas, May Day, a siren, shaking hands on meeting someone...

Put the topic cards/papers into a non-see through bag. 

When it's their turn a player pulls a topic from the bag. They then must give an account of the history (story) behind the thing or event they've drawn.  It needn't be factual!  Encourage imagination, outrageous lies, flights of fantasy...

The goal of this public speaking game is sustained credible fluency. Aim for 1 - 2 minutes per story.

3. End lines

You'll need a collection of endings written on slips of paper.

For example: 'Just do it', 'Diamonds are forever', 'He's fallen in the water', 'Some like it hot', 'His bark is worse than his bite', 'Love makes the world go round', 'An apple a day keeps the doctor away', 'First up, best dressed', 'King for a day', 'Funny money', 'Laughter is the best medicine'...

Put the end lines into a non-see through bag.

Each player takes a turn to take an ending from the bag. The task is to tell a 1-2 minute story ending with the line they have selected.

4. Story Starters

Write opening sentences or phrases on slips of paper. You'll need one for each member of your group and then some more. For example: 'It was a dark and stormy night', 'I wish people would not say...', 'Yesterday I saw a herd of cows ', 'My favorite activity is bird watching', 'The wisest saying I ever heard was...', 'In 20 years time I will be...', 'It made me yell', 'All I want for Christmas is...', 'Something is terribly wrong...', 'The little voice inside my head...', 'This is the secret I've never shared before', 'I never knew what happened...', 'Sometimes I just want to...', 'You know it's Summer when...', 'Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you', 'The story made me want to...','I heard the best news this morning', 'The sound of people laughing...'

Put the slips of paper into a non-see through bag.

Nominate a person to begin. He/she reaches into the bag and pulls out a story starter. The starter they've drawn must be used to open their story.   A story can be built and extended however the speaker wishes.

5. Oink Substitution

In this game a commonly used word is chosen and then substituted with the word ' oink '. For example: If the selected word is  I , the speaker says  oink  instead.

Oink  can be played several ways.

Playing Oink using well-known stories

Make copies of well-known children's stories. For instance - Red Riding Hood, The Gingerbread Man or Three Little Pigs. (You will find many of them here: american literature.com has hundreds available.)

Next choose a regularly occurring word in each piece to substitute.

Eg. The word 'she' would be suitable in The Gingerbread Man story . Here's the opening paragraph given the 'oink' treatment.

"One day, the cook went into the kitchen to make some gingerbread. OINK took some flour and water, and treacle and ginger, and mixed them all well together, and OINK put in some more water to make it thin, and then some more flour to make it thick, and a little salt and some spice, and then OINK rolled it out into a beautiful, smooth, dark-yellow dough."

Decide who is to start. Ask them to choose a story. They are to read aloud for approximately one minute making sure they use 'oink' in place of the selected word.

Repeat for each member of your group.  Try to have each new reader of the same story pick up from where the last reader of it left off rather than repeat the same passage. 

Encourage authoritative readings, full of passion and drama!   

Using Oink as an extension activity

Another way to play  Oink  is as an extension of already known games. Try it with  One Minute Speeches , Story Starters or End Lines.

Once your group is confident, add the ' oink ' factor for even more fun! You'll find substitution hones thinking-while-you're-speaking skills really well.

6. The BIG Fat Lie

This game encourages the use of the imagination, develops fluency and, it's fun. In playing it your group will learn about body language too. How do you know when somebody is lying? How can you tell?

Each speaker is to stand so that everyone can see them clearly and share 3 things about themselves on a theme you set.

Examples of theme: holidays, the future, my favorite after school activities, when I was young, my beliefs, the best books I've read, the best adventures I've had..., my family...

Two of the things they say about themselves in relation to the theme are to be true. The third is not .

When they've finished speaking, ask the class/group to identify the lie. And when they have, ask them how they knew. What alerted them to it being untrue?

PS. This makes a great icebreaker for groups getting together for the first time.

7. In the News Today

In the last activity making up of this collection of 7 public speaking games, your class/group are broadcasters, anchor people for a news show.

The news is whatever has happened during the day. It could be an event on the way to school like a traffic jam. It might be a new menu in the canteen or lunch room. It could be an announcement the principal made.

It doesn't matter how trivial the happening; encourage the big news treatment for anything at all, even a new set of pencils!

The aim of the exercise is give whatever subject they choose the standard news format. They'll need to cover who, what, where, why, when and how .

Once they've mastered that encourage experimentation; adding introduction hooks, on-the-spot interviews, switch backs and summaries.

Before you begin the games with your class

Lead in guidelines.

Taking the time to set the games up will ensure they go well and go on to become an accepted and eagerly anticipated part of your classroom activities.

• If your class is new to playing public speaking games start with the simple activities first, for example, the Story Starters.
• Model or demonstrate each game before you ask them to play themselves.
• If it's too threatening to have the entire focus of the class on one person at a time - split into smaller groups of 4-6 players and have them work simultaneously. It will be rowdy but worth it!
• Establish your ground rules for positive participation. You can check out the ones I used in my teaching here: rules for public speaking games
• Include full class quickfire feedback sessions at the end of each game. I found these invaluable for drawing attention to and reinforcing what had been done well. Be sure to acknowledge any gain - not matter how small!
• Keep the timing snappy. Too much of any one particular activity will become tedious. Keep it flowing along.
