FAU GPA Requirements

Many schools specify a minimum GPA requirement, but this is often just the bare minimum to submit an application without immediately getting rejected.

The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. For this, we look at the school's average GPA for its current students.

(Most schools use a weighted GPA out of 4.0, though some report an unweighted GPA.

With a GPA of 3.78, FAU requires you to be above average in your high school class. You'll need at least a mix of A's and B's, with more A's than B's. You can compensate for a lower GPA with harder classes, like AP or IB classes. This will show that you're able to handle more difficult academics than the average high school student.

SAT and ACT Requirements

Each school has different requirements for standardized testing. Only a few schools require the SAT or ACT, but many consider your scores if you choose to submit them.

Many schools say they have no SAT score cutoff, but the truth is that there is a hidden SAT requirement. This is based on the school's average score.

The average SAT score composite at FAU is a 1160 on the 1600 SAT scale.

This score makes FAU Competitive for SAT test scores.

The 25th percentile SAT score is 1030, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1200. In other words, a 1030 on the SAT places you below average, while a 1200 will move you up to above average .

SAT Score Choice Policy

The Score Choice policy at your school is an important part of your testing strategy.

FAU has the Score Choice policy of "Highest Section."

This is also known as "superscoring." This means that you can choose which SAT tests you want to send to the school. Of all the scores they receive, your application readers will consider your highest section scores across all SAT test dates you submit .

For example, say you submit the following 3 test scores:

Even though the highest total you scored on any one test date was 1000, FAU will take your highest section score from all your test dates, then combine them to form your Superscore. You can raise your composite score from 1000 to 1400 in this example.

This is important for your testing strategy. Because you can choose which tests to send in, and FAU forms your Superscore, you can take the SAT as many times as you want, then submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore. Your application readers will only see that one score.

Therefore, if your SAT superscore is currently below a 1030, we strongly recommend that you consider prepping for the SAT and retaking it . You have a very good chance of raising your score, which will significantly boost your chances of getting in.

Even better, because of the Superscore, you can focus all your energy on a single section at a time. If your Reading score is lower than your other sections, prep only for the Reading section, then take the SAT. Then focus on Math for the next test, and so on. This will give you the highest Superscore possible.

FAU ACT Requirements

Just like for the SAT, FAU likely doesn't have a hard ACT cutoff, but if you score too low, your application will get tossed in the trash.

Average ACT: 24

The average ACT score at FAU is 24. This score makes FAU Moderately Competitive for ACT scores.

The 25th percentile ACT score is 20, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 25.

ACT Score Sending Policy

If you're taking the ACT as opposed to the SAT, you have a huge advantage in how you send scores, and this dramatically affects your testing strategy.

Here it is: when you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one. This is unlike the SAT, where many schools require you to send all your tests ever taken.

This means that you have more chances than you think to improve your ACT score. To try to aim for the school's ACT requirement of 20 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can. When you have the final score that you're happy with, you can then send only that score to all your schools.

ACT Superscore Policy

By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT. (Superscore means that the school takes your best section scores from all the test dates you submit, and then combines them into the best possible composite score). Thus, most schools will just take your highest ACT score from a single sitting.

However, in our research, we found that FAU does in fact offer an ACT superscore policy . To quote their Admissions Office:

We super score by using the highest sub scores from multiple test dates to create the ACT composite and the SAT total.

Superscoring is powerful to your testing strategy, and you need to make sure you plan your testing accordingly. Of all the scores that FAU receives, your application readers will consider your highest section scores across all ACT test dates you submit .

For example, say you submit the following 4 test scores:

Even though the highest ACT composite you scored on any one test date was 20, FAU will take your highest section score from all your test dates, then combine them to form your Superscore. You can raise your composite score from 20 to 32 in this example.

This is important for your testing strategy. Because you can choose which tests to send in, and FAU forms your Superscore, you can take the ACT as many times as you want, then submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore. Your application readers will only see that one score.

Therefore, if your ACT score is currently below a 20, we strongly recommend that you consider prepping for the ACT and retaking it . You have a very good chance of raising your score, which will significantly boost your chances of getting in.

SAT/ACT Writing Section Requirements

Currently, only the ACT has an optional essay section that all students can take. The SAT used to also have an optional Essay section, but since June 2021, this has been discontinued unless you are taking the test as part of school-day testing in a few states. Because of this, no school requires the SAT Essay or ACT Writing section, but some schools do recommend certain students submit their results if they have them.

FAU considers the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section optional and may not include it as part of their admissions consideration. You don't need to worry too much about Writing for this school, but other schools you're applying to may require it.

Final Admissions Verdict

Because this school is lightly selective, you have a great shot at getting in, as long as you don't fall well below average . Aim for a 1030 SAT or a 20 ACT or higher, and you'll almost certainly get an offer of admission. As long as you meet the rest of the application requirements below, you'll be a shoo-in.

But if you score below our recommended target score, you may be one of the very few unlucky people to get rejected.

Admissions decisions are based on a completed application, with documents, including a completed interview. Applicants who fail to provide all required documentation including but is not limited to, résumé, personal statement, recommendation forms, and entrance exams by the admissions deadline will not receive the opportunity to interview. 

Un-weighted GPA: 3.6 (minimum) Academic Records are required as part of the online application and are self-reported by the applicant. Final grades from 7th grade, and first semester of 8th grade, are required. Applicants must include a copy of an official high school transcript, showing cumulative GPA, standardized test scores, and all high school courses attempted (including high school courses completed in middle school).

Algebra I successfully completed with A or B grade. Geometry preferred to be completed.

Academic Records are required as part of the online application and are self-reported by the applicant. Final grades from 7th grade, and first semester of 8th grade, are required. Applicants must include a copy of an official high school transcript, showing cumulative GPA, standardized test scores, and all high school courses attempted (including high school courses completed in middle school).

Once you have decided which program to apply for, the application process begins. The FAU application form can be filled online only. Undergraduate applicants have two options. They can either fill the form through the college website  or through the common application form . Other applicants can fill the form using the university website only.

To fill the form, you need to create your profile first, then you can log in through that profile and fill the form. Once you pay an application fee of $ 30, you can submit the form.

Self report your academic record and test scores

Now that you have submitted your application form, the next step is to send your academic and test records. To do that you need to visit the page http://www.fau.edu/admissions/ssar/ and create your profile. Log in through your profile and fill the required sections.

Letter of Recommendation

Letters of recommendation are required for masters and doctoral programs. These letters are written by your former faculty or employer and they give more insight about your personality and character. Some programs required two and some required 3 letters of recommendation.

Statement of Purpose

Statement of purpose is a 1-2 page essay describing why you want to join a particular program.

This essay gives you an opportunity to explain yourself and helps the university evaluate you better.

Applicants must have completed high school education from a recognized school. 

The following units of study in high school are required to be considered for admission to FAU. These are also the only courses that are calculated in the grade point average (GPA) used to determine admissions eligibility:

English (3 with substantial composition): 4 units

Mathematics (Algebra 1 level and above): 4 units

Natural Science (2 with lab): 3 units

Social Science: 3 units

Foreign Language (of the same language): 2 units

Academic Electives: 2 units

School of Architecture freshman applicants should select pre-architecture on their application for admission. Students will automatically be considered for direct entry into the lower division architecture program.

Transfer applicants with less than 30 earned credit hours should present a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on all attempted college work. These applicants must be in good academic standing at their last attended institution.

If you attend an International or American high school outside the United States, you must request that your high school counselor or school administrator email an official PDF copy of your current high school transcript.

Prospective students applying to the Florida Atlantic University might find it challenging to find relevant data on the FAU acceptance rate and admission statistics. This is why we’ve compiled the useful table above, listing all the relevant information you need.

The Admission Statistics data displays the total number of students who have applied and the total number who have been accepted. It also includes a breakdown of the total number of male and female applicants, along with those who have been accepted.

Tips to Answer FAU Secondaries

FAU Secondaries Pre-Writing Guidance: FAU slightly tweaks the wording of its FAU secondary essay prompts each year. FAU Secondary Application Tip #2:  Highlight your leadership, passion to change healthcare, and impact on society. After reading your entire FAU Medical School secondary application, the reader should understand: how are you committed to improving your community?

FAU Secondary Application Tip #3: To answer FAU Medical School’s diversity question, you don’t have to necessarily talk about your ethnic background. You can discuss working with immigrant populations or other talents / activities that have shaped who you are today.

• Not discussing how they grew from the challenge.

AA degree transfer student

Transferring with an Associate of Arts Degree from a Florida College System or State University System Institution.

• Applicants should present a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher on all attempted coursework.
• Admission to the School of Architecture , Wilkes Honors College , and Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing is limited. All applicants must meet the specific course and grade point average requirements for direct admission to those programs.
• Programs in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters , such as Music majors, the College of Business , College of Education , College of Engineering and Computer Science , and the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science are selective and have additional requirements.
• Students in the Teacher Education program in the College of Education must pass all four parts of the State’s General Knowledge Exam that are required for any teacher preparation program.

**All other Colleges and majors, except for those described above, fall under the Undergraduate Admissions standard requirements for admission**

Transfers with less than 30 earned credit hours

• Applicants should present a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on all attempted college coursework.
• Applicants must be in good academic standing at their last attended institution.
• Applicants must also meet all freshman admissions requirements .
• Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission. Applicants who are not selected for their chosen term of entry may appeal the admissions decision through the appeals process .

Transfers with 30 - 59 earned credit hours

• Applicants must also meet all freshman admissions requirements or have successfully completed (C or higher) at least one English composition course, and one college level math course.

Transferring with more than 60 earned credit hours

• All transfer applicants should have completed eight to ten credit hours of sequential foreign language or its equivalent in quarter hours prior to enrollment at Florida Atlantic University.*

* This requirement may be satisfied by presenting proof that two units of a sequential foreign language were completed in high school or by passing a CLEP or other designated examination of proficiency. If the foreign language admission requirement is not met at the time of transfer, then it becomes a graduation requirement.

Transferring with 90+ attempted/earned credit hours

Applicants who have attempted more than 90 college credits will be individually reviewed on a course-by-course basis. Additionally –

• Applicants should present a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on all attempted college coursework AND should have completed 67% or more of their attempted coursework.
• Applicants with 90 or more attempted credits who have not completed pre-requisite coursework for their intended degree program will likely not be admitted.
• Applicants with over 90 credits must meet FAU admissions requirements as well as their intended academic program requirements.
• Students who have attempted and failed core courses within academic programs and pre-requisites more than 3 times will not be admitted to FAU. Example: Enrolled and attempted Calculus I three times and failed, or below required minimum grade or withdrew, and interested in Engineering or Business.
• Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission.
• Applicants with an AA degree and over 90 credits attempted/earned are held to the 90+ standards.
• Students who have attempted 90 or more college credits may have exhausted their financial aid eligibility.*

Second Bachelor's Degree

Students applying for a second baccalaureate degree must have received their first bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution and achieved a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher. A "major" is required for all students seeking a Second Bachelor's Degree when submitting the application online. Second bachelor’s applicants cannot be admitted to the same major they received their first degree from.

Please note specific degree requirements regarding Second Baccalaureate Degrees, to earn a second baccalaureate degree, students must:

• Earn a minimum of 30 credits in residence at FAU beyond those required for the first degree. Students earning two degrees simultaneously ("dual degree") must earn at least 150 credits.
• Earn at least 75 percent of all upper-division credits in the major department from FAU (effective for students who entered FAU in fall 2010 and going forward). Some majors may require more than 75 percent. Consult the degree requirements section of the major for details. The previous requirement, to earn at least 50 percent of all upper-division credits in the major department from FAU, is still in effect for students who entered FAU prior to fall 2010.
• Satisfy the admission and graduation requirements of the department and college granting the second degree as described under the heading Lower-Division College and Department Requirements. Students who have received a bachelor's degree from a four-year accredited institution of higher education will be deemed as having met the FAU general education requirements. Students must meet the foreign language admissions requirement, however, if required for one of the two degrees.

Returning Student

If you are a former, degree-seeking FAU student, but not currently enrolled, your eligibility to return will depend on several factors. Degree-seeking students returning after an absence of more than a year may be subject to the following:

• If last enrollment was more than three consecutive semesters, the student must file a new admissions application with the appropriate documents and submit a new application fee of $30.
• If the student has attended another institution since the last period of enrollment at FAU, official transcripts must be forwarded directly to the FAU Office of Admissions by the registrar of the other institution(s).
• The student must be in good standing (eligible to return) at FAU and at any institution attended since last period of enrollment at FAU. If the student was academically dismissed from FAU, that student would need to petition to be reinstated to FAU before the admissions application can be processed (this is handled by the college in which the student was academically dismissed.)
• Previous attendance at FAU does not guarantee admission. Quality of any interim work and successful progress toward a degree are considered.
• A returning student that is denied by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions has the right to appeal through the FCSA.

If you have not attended for at least three consecutive semesters, you must re-apply for admission .

International Transfers

In addition to meeting the University admissions requirements, International students whose first language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency, as determined by the university. Visit the Undergraduate International Admissions for more information on the different methods to prove English proficiency at FAU. If eligible for readmissions, returning former students will be readmitted to the same major they were pursuing when they last enrolled at FAU (except Engineering and Nursing majors).

Math Boot Camp

Students who have one or two unsuccessful attempts at college math courses will be required to attend the FAU Math Boot Camp prior to being able to register for another math course.
