Guideline for the Bachelor’s thesis

Important Information about registering, writing and submitting your Bachelor’s thesis

Time of registration

Registration for the Bachelor’s thesis is possible as soon as 108 credit points have been achieved. As a rule, this should be the case during the fifth semester. The completion of the BA thesis is usually recommended for the sixth semester (submission by 30 September or 31 March, if the standard period of study must be adhered to and if, for example, a Master’s programme immediately follows).

Registration and topic

Please agree on a topic with your supervisor, who usually also acts as the first examiner, before registering your Bachelor’s thesis. As a rule, you must write it in your   major ; a topic from your minor is only possible if there is a connection in terms of content and/or methodology.

In the dual-subject Bachelor’s programme , the thesis can be registered in either of the subjects. An interdisciplinary topic in both subjects is possible if supervision by one examiner per subject is guaranteed.

The topic is agreed either in a personal meeting between the candidate and the examiners as part of a course/meeting or by exchanging emails with the first and second examiner. The topic specified in the email from the first examiner is binding and must be transferred to the registration form.

Please submit the completed “Registration for Bachelor’s Thesis” form, signed and dated by you and your supervisor ("Supervisor; First Reviewer; Examiner") and the second examiner, immediately by mail (or as a scan via the contact form) to the Examination Office.

The binding notification of the topic, including the setting of a submission deadline, is then sent in writing by the Examinations Office. The submission deadline is calculated from the date the topic is issued, based on the date of the first reviewer’s signature. You should therefore also endeavour to obtain the signature of the second examiner at the same time and submit the registration form to the Examination Office immediately after finalising the topic.

If the topic was agreed by exchanging emails with the first and second supervisor, please forward the email from the first supervisor together with the email from the second supervisor and the scanned registration form (completed and signed by all parties) to the Examination Office via the contact form.

The binding notification of the topic, including the setting of a submission deadline, is then made in writing by the Examinations Office. The topic is therefore formally set by the examination Office (Examination Office, Maximilianstraße 22, 53111 Bonn) following registration.

The submission deadline is calculated from the date the topic is issued based on the date of the first reviewer's signature. You should therefore also endeavour to obtain the signature of the second assessor at the same time and submit the application to the Examinations Office immediately after agreeing on the topic.

Important note : Please note that the examination regulations only recognise the term “topic”, not “title”. The topic of the thesis is therefore synonymous with the title of the thesis. The specific topic that you have indicated on the registration form and agreed with the reviewers is placed on the cover sheet and in the declaration of independence. Please refer to the separate point below under the heading ‘Changing the topic’ for the possibility of changing the topic at a later date.

You can download the registration form here: Registration form .

Examiners / Supervisors

In principle, all lecturers in your subject may act as examiners/supervisors for a Bachelor’s thesis. Please note that one of the two examiners must be employed with at least 50% at the University of Bonn. Both examiners must have at least the academic degree "Magister Artium (M.A.)" or "Master of Arts (M.A.)". Please also note that there is no legal entitlement to a specific examiner.

Writing period

A maximum period of three months from the issueing of the topic (date of signature of the first reviewer) is allowed for the writing of the provided topic & thesis. Upon justified request, the Examination Office may, in agreement with the examiner, grant an extension of up to six weeks for the submission of the Bachelor’s thesis. An extension of more than six weeks is not possible, even in cases of illness (in these cases it is only possible to withdraw from the registered examination, cf. the section “Withdrawal”).

Change of topic

It is possible to slightly change the focus of the original topic upon written request to the Examination Office, provided that your supervisor supports the request and documents this with his/her signature. Please note that a complete change or reorientation of the topic requires a withdrawal in accordance with the regulations.

There is a one-off opportunity to return the topic no later than one month after being notified of it by the Examination Office and to document this formally with a written request to withdraw from the Bachelor’s thesis registration. In this case, the topic is deemed not to have been issued; there is therefore no failed attempt. Please note that it is not possible to withdraw after this deadline. As an exception, this is only permitted after the deadline if there are valid reasons (in particular inability to take the examination due to illness). In both cases, the thesis must be re-registered later; the newly issued topic must differ significantly in content from the originally issued topic.

Scope and requirements

The text part of the Bachelor’s thesis should contain at least 70,000 characters including spaces and notes (or 35 A4 pages) and may not exceed 120,000 characters including spaces and notes (or 60 A4 pages). The content and form of the thesis must meet the standards of academic work at “Bachelor of Arts” or “Bachelor of Science” level. You should therefore enquire about the specific requirements with your academic advisor. Please also note that the regulation of registration becoming possible after achieving  108 credit points means that you can prepare the Bachelor’s thesis during your studies (as opposed to at the very end of them) thoroughly with the necessary research and readings before registering the thesis during your fifth semester.

Cover sheet / title page

To ensure that all the necessary information appears on the cover page of the Bachelor's thesis, please follow this template:  Sample cover page (DOCX).

Until further notice, Bachelor’s theses must still be submitted digitally AND by mail (three bound copies, see below). The content of the digital version and the written copies must be identical! CD-ROMs and USB sticks no longer need to be attached. As usual, the Examination Office will take care of forwarding the thesis to the first examiner and the second examiner. Once submitted, a Bachelor’s thesis cannot be withdrawn!

The thesis must be accompanied by a written declaration ("declaration of independence") in which you affirm that you have written the thesis independently, have not used any sources and aids other than those specified, have marked quotations and have submitted identical digital and written copies. Please note that the use of AI (applications such as ChatGPT) in the preparation of written work is prohibited! It is an unauthorised aid unless its use has been expressly permitted by the examiners. In cases of doubt, the Examination Office may request a sworn declaration.

Please attach the following declaration with date and original signature (not digital) as the last page of your thesis (Download Declaration of Independence here) :

“I hereby affirm that the Bachelor’s thesis entitled “...” was written by myself and without any unauthorised assistance, that it has not been submitted for examination at any other university, that it has not been published in whole or in part, and that the content of the text file of the digital version is identical to the written versions submitted. I have indicated in each individual case those parts of the thesis - including charts, maps, illustrations, etc. - which are taken from other works in terms of wording or meaning.”

This declaration must be submitted together with the other parts of the thesis, such as the cover sheet, the bibliographies and any appendices, firmly attached to the rest of the thesis (no loose sheets!).

1. digital submission:

Please send the digital version as a text file (Word document or PDF) from your University of Bonn e-mail address to the Examinations Office of the Faculty of Humanities or use the contact form. The hand-signed declaration of independence must be inserted as a scanned document into the Bachelor`’s thesis as the last page. This file of your Bachelor’s thesis will be forwarded to the respective two examiners by the Examinations Office; submission deadlines are met upon receipt of the electronically sent form at the Examinations Office. As we have already received the document in electronic form from you by e-mail/contact form, you no longer need to send us a CD-ROM or USB stick with the thesis by post until further notice.

2. submission by mail:

Your thesis must be submitted to us in triplicate by mail. Please submit each of these copies in bound form (adhesive, spiral or hardcover binding is the norm). Please also note that the indexes and appendices as well as the cover sheet and the self-signed declaration of independence are part of the thesis and must therefore be firmly bound. The paper version must be submitted by post no later than one week after the submission of the digital version.

Please send the three copies to the following address:

University of Bonn Faculty of Philosophy Bachelor/Master Examination Board Am Hof 1 53113 Bonn

Exceeding the submission deadline

If you exceed the deadline for submission, the Bachelor’s thesis must be assessed as "insufficient" (5.0). If necessary, please submit an application for an extension in good time before the deadline (at least three weeks before the deadline).

A failed Bachelor’s thesis can be repeated once . Failed attempts in the same subject at other universities will be recognised. In these cases, the topic can be chosen from another subject area. If the second Bachelor’s thesis is also assessed as "insufficient", the Bachelor's exam has been failed conclusively.

De-registration

In general, you must remain enrolled even after submitting your Bachelor’s thesis or another final exam in your degree programme in accordance with § 63 Para. 1, 2nd half-sentence HG; the examination procedure is only completed when it has been determined whether it was successful or unsuccessful. Students who have not re-registered, e.g. in order to save the associated fees, although they are not expected to know their examination result at the end of the previous semester are therefore taking a risk, especially as their uni-ID will be switched off and they will no longer have access to BASIS and their transcripts.

If you have not passed your last examin(s) and have therefore unfortunately not achieved your degree after all, you must re-enrol in order to re-sit your exams. If you have already missed the set re-registration deadline at this point, late re-registration at the Registrar's Office in accordance with Section 16 of the Enrolment Regulations can only take place later if the missed deadline is excused in writing for an important reason and proof of this is provided. You cannot register for the last outstanding exam before you are re-enrolled. It may also be the case that you can no longer be enrolled in your old examination regulations, but must continue your studies in accordance with the new examination regulations then in use, which may be followed by a time-consuming credit transfer procedure and possibly the loss of credits already earned.

However, if you have properly re-registered, you are entitled to a partial refund of the fees as soon as you have passed the final exam. You can find more information here .

Bachelor thesis in Germany Bachelor thesis

Looking for a topic for your bachelor thesis combined with an opportunity for career entry in Germany? Read here how to find the right topic and what career opportunities are available during your bachelor thesis.

Arrows tree - Metaphor: Bachelor thesis in Germany

Finding a topic for your bachelor thesis: focus on a high degree of interest and good supervision

Writing your bachelor thesis at a company: opportunities for career entry, info-box: checklist: step by step to the perfect company.

Spoiled for choice or clueless? When it comes to finding a topic for their bachelor thesis, many students despair. However, those who bear a few key aspects in mind and make a start early on will be able to master this challenge.

At most German universities, students are free to choose their own dissertation topic when they have completed their bachelor's studies. While students mainly consider preset topics during their studies, suddenly the possibilities are endless. The heads of many students fill with question marks, and they break out in a cold sweat.

Take a step-by-step approach

The aim of the bachelor thesis is for students to prove that they are able to reflect on an academic issue independently. No more and no less. As such, it is not a case of ploughing through as broad a topic as possible, or of inventing something entirely new. Quite the contrary in fact: in the bachelor thesis, the topic should be clearly defined.

Within this, the most important question is 'What actually interests me?' Prior knowledge acquired during university lectures and professional experience gained during your studies can serve as inspiration for this. If you discern a particularly fascinating aspect within a topic, you should first review the state of research. Only in this way can you determine what has already been covered within this topic and where compelling questions still lurk. The topic ultimately chosen should differ from those already covered.

Ask the right questions

"Initially, I was a little concerned, as I could not find many sources for my topic," says Thomas Düllmann, looking back on when he first began his bachelor thesis. Düllmann studied software engineering at Heilbronn University. He discussed what academic work actually meant at great length with his professor. "Not only the source research is important, but also the logical conclusion," explains the 26-year-old. "This point should be clarified early on to ensure you do not lose yourself in the sources and waste time unnecessarily." A discussion with a professor of the department early on will help order preliminary ideas and determine whether the topic can even feasibly be approached in the way intended. "Students need to ask the right questions during the consultation," warns Kai Stapelfeldt, Managing Director of Studi-Lektor.de.

The business administration graduate coaches students during the final thesis phase, and advises them to consider exactly which information they require to work effectively before the consultation session. "The most important question is that of the complexity," says Stapelfeldt. "The professor must weigh up whether the proposed topic is viable for a bachelor thesis." If the chosen topic is too easy, too difficult or not yet sufficiently developed, students should be informed of this in good time to allow them to alter their topic accordingly.

Review the topic suggestions from companies

Nowadays, many companies advertise their own bachelor and Master thesis topics - they have long since recognized the potential of this cooperation with students. However, this also means that the companies set the topics for bachelor's students. This is an important difference to writing your bachelor thesis at university. In principle, speculative applications outlining your own topic are possible, though students should allow more time to prepare for this. "The decision on where to write your bachelor thesis should be based on the topic," believes Düllmann.

He advises students to write their bachelor thesis at university if they cannot find a company that will allow them to address an interesting topic. "That being said, those who receive an offer of an interesting topic from a company that is ideally located close by and willing to remunerate the bachelor thesis phase should definitely seize this opportunity." After several queries to regional companies, Heilbronn-based IT company Cirosec suggested a topic to Düllmann that piqued the student's interest. The topic was defined in brief discussions, with flat hierarchies and a good support system ultimately winning him over. The conditions were set out in writing and a contract drawn up, which also covered the legal use and applications of the bachelor thesis.

Insist on a close cooperation

Düllmann's professor conferred with the supervisor at the company and clarified open questions. He also ensured that the thesis met the academic requirements. "The scope of duties at the company and the content of the bachelor thesis should be defined clearly as early as possible," Düllmann advises. Written agreements and close cooperation between the university and company are a great help, but not always the norm. Students should definitely insist on this, for only in this way could they avoid slipping into the role of a trainee and neglecting the academic component of the thesis during their time at the company. It is also well worth taking a look at the special information sheets on completing the final thesis externally that have been published by several universities.

Bachelor's degrees are long since widely accepted by companies. The opportunity to write your bachelor thesis at a company promises smooth transition into a professional career.

Most companies are satisfied with the level of competence of graduates with a bachelor's degree; indeed, the prospects for career entry are particularly positive among computer scientists, engineers and natural scientists. This is confirmed by the study entitled "Mit dem Bachelor in den Beruf " ("Starting a career with a bachelor's degree") conducted by the Stifterverband, the Cologne Institute for Economic Research, and the Higher Education Information System (HIS). "Experience has shown that most companies consider a bachelor's degree to be a very good qualification," confirms Professor Jochen Hasenpath from Kiel University of Applied Sciences. The holder of a doctorate in engineering is responsible for the student advisory service for bachelor's students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, of whom around 95 per cent of every year group write their bachelor thesis at a company.

Gain practical experience while writing your bachelor thesis

Romina di Fiore, a Business Administration student at Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences, also chose to pursue this route. Although exempt from the practical semester due to a completed vocational training, she still opted to complete a practical in the field of university marketing at electronics company Rohde & Schwarz during her degree course. "The job description was so interesting, I simply had to apply," she says. With a study focus on human resources, industrial goods marketing and digital marketing, she fits in perfectly at the company - and this not only as a trainee. "I wanted to consider the conception of company career Facebook pages in my thesis," explains the 27-year-old, who wrote her bachelor thesis in 2011. "The issue had just surfaced back then, and was also discussed at great length internally at Rohde & Schwarz." Thus, she had found the practical basis for her thesis. The company subsequently set up its own career Facebook page based on the findings from her bachelor thesis, and Romina di Fiore joined the company directly as a social media expert. She describes her enthusiasm for the subject as the most important factor for success. "You should consider very carefully which topics you are really interested in, which area you wish to begin working in, and which companies fit with this," she advises. This increases the chances of being taken on by the company afterwards. Among her fellow students of whom around half wrote their bachelor thesis at a company, di Fiore observed that career entry ultimately tended to be easier for those with extensive practical experience.

Set the course early on

Finding a suitable company can be time-consuming. Daphne Menges estimates the time from preliminary contact to signing of a contract to be five months. "Those who only begin their search after completing their exams risk having a long time of waiting," warns the process engineering student. At the start of 2012, she contacted precious metals and technology company Heraeus about the possibility of writing her bachelor thesis there. She had previously come across a technology report from the company online that exactly matched her study focus. Six months later, she began a practical at the company, subsequently staying on to write her bachelor thesis. For Simon Schweidler, the study regulations require a bachelor thesis written at a company. The chemical technology student at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences decided on materials technology company, Umicore. A fellow student recommended the company to him, and this piqued Schweidler's interest. "At university, we only touched briefly on the subject of metals in inorganic chemistry," says the 25-year-old. "Going into this in greater depth during the cooperation with a company appealed to me." He successfully applied to write his bachelor thesis at the company as well as to complete the preliminary practical required by his study regulations there. A number of universities choose this route to extend the short processing time of an average of just 8 to 12 weeks. At Kiel University of Applied Sciences, the bachelor thesis can also be combined with a practical. "Otherwise there would not be sufficient time to delve into compelling issues with the company," explains Professor Hasenpath. "What's more, it often takes a few days to get organised, particularly at large companies. This is valuable time that students lose without this practical phase beforehand."

Record everything in writing

The cooperation with companies is particularly smooth at universities of applied science with a practical emphasis. It is often beneficial for students to have one contact for the practical component and another for the theoretical one. However, conflicts of interest can arise if the university emphasises the need for an extensive theoretical component and the company primarily wishes to evaluate data. The nexus project of the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) recommends recording the expectations of all involved parties in writing beforehand. It must be clear to the company that they are supporting students in a piece of academic work within a clearly defined field. Many companies require students to sign a non-disclosure agreement confirming that the thesis will not be published (or only after the publication embargo has lapsed). "From a company perspective, entirely understandable," Hasenpath explains, though he regrets that these theses cannot be presented to other students as examples of good work. "I do not consider the publication embargo as a problem," says process engineer Menges. "After all, the outcomes of my bachelor thesis were noted in my work reference, meaning future employers are able to gain a good impression of my capabilities." The young woman finds it important for students to network during their bachelor thesis, to familiarise themselves with the company structures, and to take a practical approach to work. "Findings from my studies have already been implemented," the 27-year-old tells proudly. Despite the good prospects of direct career entry, she still opted to pursue a Master's degree. Like most other students, Menges, di Fiore and Schweidler receive financial support from the company while writing their bachelor thesis. With monthly pay totalling 700 to 900 Euros, the three are among the best paid. Each company has its own model for the remuneration of students writing their bachelor thesis at the company. It is an appealing aspect that means students do not need to worry about earning a living alongside their work.

Writing the bachelor thesis at a company can yield manifold benefits for all involved. Students are able to gain some preliminary practical experience whilst receiving support and networking, and companies can pass on tasks they do not have time for in day-to-day business.

Formalities for the thesis

The regulations are defined in the APSO/FPSO (photo: photcase.de)

Regulations

You can find the regulations applying to both bachelor’s and master’s theses in the §§ of the APSO (General Academic and Examination Regulations) and in the FPSO (Departmental Study and Examination Regulations) of your degree program.   We recommend that you familiarize yourself with these regulations as soon as possible and consult the administrative office of your school or departmental student advising should you have any questions.

Requirements for Admission to the Thesis

To be eligible to register for the thesis, you must fulfill certain requirements, e.g. you must have successfully completed certain modules or have earned a certain amount of credits. Please inform yourself about the admission requirements in the FPSO (Departmental Study and Examination Regulations) of your degree program.

Registration for the Thesis

Once you have identified your thesis topic and had it approved by your principal advisor, you must register for the thesis. Because the registration process may vary from school to school, we recommend that you consult the information on the websites of your school or your program’s departmental student advising and inform yourself about the registration process. Please note that registration for the thesis is often only possible in a certain cycle of time (e.g. up to the 15th of each month). Be sure to inform yourself early on about deadlines to avoid unnecessary time delays.

Time Limit for Writing and Submitting the Thesis

The permissible amount of time that may elapse between registering for and submitting the thesis is specified in the FPSO (Departmental Study and Examination Regulations) of your degree program. Further information on registering your thesis and applicable time frames is also available on the homepage of your school or department.

The Use of English in Thesis Titles at TUM

Please follow the guidelines below for the use of English in thesis titles. Submitted documents not complying with these guidelines will be changed/corrected by a representative of the Academic Programs Office or Examination Office to ensure the correct and consistent appearance of all graduation documents at TUM.

Credits and Workload (cp. § 6 (3) APSO (General Academic and Examination Regulations))

Bachelor’s Thesis Depending on the degree program, 6 to 12 credits shall be awarded for the preparation of a bachelor’s thesis. Calculated in hours, this is equivalent to a workload of approximately 180 to 360 hours for the thesis.   Please note that, as a rule, you must achieve further credits while working on your thesis. You will be writing your thesis as “part-time work”.   Be sure to allot yourself a sufficient amount of time! You can find information about the number of credits to be awarded for the thesis in your degree program in your program’s FPSO (Departmental Study and Examination Regulations). Master’s Thesis For the preparation of the master’s thesis, 30 credits will be awarded. Calculated in hours, this is equivalent to a workload of approximately 900 hours for the thesis. For advanced studies master’s programs, 15 to 30 credits will be awarded. You can find information regarding the number of credits to be awarded for the thesis in your degree program in your program’s FPSO (Departmental Study and Examination Regulations).

Submission Postponement and Illness (cp. § 18 (6) APSO (General Academic and Examination Regulations))

If a student cannot meet the first submission deadline for the thesis for reasons beyond the student’s control, the Examination Committee may extend the period for writing the thesis by a maximum of half that period. The student must file an application with the Examination Committee for an extension prior to the first submission deadline, and the student’s supervisor must approve the extension. In such a case, please contact your supervisor as early as possible.   Should you be prevented from working on your thesis due to illness and are able to verify this with medical documentation, then the allocated time period for the thesis will be suspended. You can find important information on dealing with medical documentation here

Submitting your Thesis

Once your thesis is finished, you have to submit it to your department or school within the corresponding deadline. Please refer to the website of your school or department or contact your departmental student advising for the details.

Colloquium or Thesis Defense

The FPSO (Departmental Study and Examination Regulations) of your degree program contains information about further requirements of your thesis such as a supplementary colloquium, a supplementary course, or defense. The module description contains information about the structure of these additional requirements and the pass/fail credit requirement or, respectively, the credit requirement you must fulfill.

The   APSO (General Academic and Examination Regulations) stipulate that, as a rule, the thesis is to be assessed within two months from the date of submission (§ 18 (11) APSO (General Academic and Examination Regulations)). Should your FPSO (Departmental Study and Examination Regulations) stipulate that the thesis module calls for additional credit requirements (such as a colloquium or a thesis defense), the overall grade for the module will be calculated as the weighted average of grades awarded for individual module requirements. The grade weights of individual requirements correspond to the number of credits awarded (§ 18 (12) APSO (General Academic and Examination Regulations)).

If the thesis has not been graded with at least “sufficient” (4.0), you are permitted, once, to submit a thesis on a new topic. To do so, you must register again no later than six weeks from notification of the results. Please note that the thesis and final colloquium may only be repeated once (§24 (7) APSO (General Academic and Examination Regulations)).

Important: Remain Enrolled

For the period in which you are working on your thesis at the TUM, from registration to submission, (+ where applicable, any supplementary requirements in conjunction with your thesis, such as a final colloquium or oral exam) you must remain enrolled in your degree program (cp. § 6 (3), APSO (General Academic and Examination Regulations). Do not forget to reenroll (Rückmeldung) within the prescribed registration time. This also applies if you are writing your thesis externally, i.e. at a company in Germany or abroad.

We appreciate your wishes, suggestions and criticism! Write an e-mail to feedback(at)tum.de .

How To Write A Bachelor/Master Thesis [2024]

Student schreibt Bachelor Arbeit

It's that time of year again when students are wrapping up their final semester and beginning to write their dissertation. In Germany, students must adhere to some particular formatting standards while writing their Bachelor's or Master's thesis.

The dissertation is a crucial component of all German higher education programs. Students may use it to demonstrate their understanding and abilities in a given field of study. The thesis also plays a crucial role in helping students develop critical thinking and research skills. They are a valuable preparation for future career opportunities.

In this article, we'll go through everything you must do to write a successful thesis. We will also provide tips and tricks to stay organized and on track throughout the process!

Thesis writing process

Bachelor’s thesis vs. Master’s thesis

A Bachelor's and a Master's thesis are two types of academic papers. A Bachelor's thesis is usually shorter and is meant to show that the student has learned the basics of the subject. In contrast, a Master's thesis is more extended and more in-depth. It should serve as evidence that the student has mastered their chosen subject.

How to format your Bachelor's or Master's thesis in Germany

The following are some of the most critical format requirements in any thesis:

Note:  Depending on the university and the "style" of the student's thesis, the formatting requirements might vary (e.g., Harvard or APA). Be sure to check with your supervisor or department for specific guidelines.

  • Margins:  Your thesis must have 1-inch margins on all sides.
  • Spacing:  The text must be double-spaced.
  • Fonts:  Subtitles must be in a 14-point typeface. The text's main body should be in 12-point font, subheadings in a 14-point typeface, and title headings in a 16-point typeface.
  • Length:  A Bachelor's thesis should be around 60 pages, while a Master's thesis should be about 80 pages.
  • Language:  Your thesis must be written in German or English, depending on your program.

Let's take a look at each thesis component, starting with the Title page. The following are the required sections for both Bachelor's and Master's thesis.

Title page

The title page of your thesis must include the following information:

  • The title of your thesis
  • The name of your supervisor
  • The name of your program

The abstract is a summary of your thesis. It should be a maximum of one page long and include the following information:

  • Your research questions

Table of contents

The table of contents must list all of the sections and subsections of your thesis.

  • List of figures:   The figures must include all the figures used in your thesis.
  • List of tables:   The list of tables must consist of all of the tables used in your thesis.

Introduction

The introduction should explain the context of your research and the problem you are trying to solve. A Bachelor's thesis should be around three pages, while a Master's thesis should be about five pages .

Literature review

The literature review critically analyzes the existing research on your topic. The literature review is an essential part of any research paper.

It helps you situate your research within the context of existing scholarship and allows you to critically evaluate the existing research on your topic. It is essential to be as critical as possible when reviewing the literature.  It would be best if you addressed questions such as:

  • What are the limitations of the existing research?
  • What gaps does the current research leave open?
  • How can my research contribute to the current body of scholarship?

Methodology

The methodology section explains the research methods you used to collect data for your thesis. This information is crucial because it allows the reader to understand how you gathered your data and what conclusions you drew from it. It is also essential to be transparent when describing your research methods so the reader can evaluate them critically.

Results & Discussion

Result and discussion : The results section presents the data you collected during your research. The discussion section is where you interpret the data and discuss the implications of your findings.

The conclusion summarizes your findings and their implications for practice or future research. A Bachelor's thesis should be around three pages, while a Master's thesis should be about five pages.

Bibliography/References

The references section lists the sources you used in your thesis. It is essential to list all of the sources you used, even if you did not cite them directly in the text.

The appendices include any additional material relevant to your thesis but do not fit within the main body of the text. This part might consist of data sets, survey instruments, or detailed descriptions of research methods.

Final thesis abroad

Bachelor’s thesis, Master’s thesis, Diplom thesis or Magister thesis abroad

If your School or Department consents, you can write your final thesis (Bachelor’s, Diplom, Magister or Master’s thesis) abroad. However, this is a highly individual matter which requires thorough planning.

General conditions

Final theses are always subject to the regulations of the university at which you are enrolled and are graded according to these regulations. This means that FAU regulations also apply for your thesis even if you decide to complete it abroad. You should therefore consult the study and examination regulations in good time and possibly also contact your subject advisor. Aspects to bear in mind are deadlines which must be met, the scope of the work, registering for a thesis and such like. You always need someone at FAU to officially allocate the topic and grade your work.

There are two ways to obtain a final thesis abroad:

  • You decide on a topic and find a supervisor at FAU and, in agreement with your supervisor, write the thesis at a university or a company abroad.
  • You organise a final thesis at a university or a company abroad and find a supervisor there. Once you have found a suitable topic and a supervisor abroad, you still need to find a supervisor at FAU. To do so, contact the department closest to the subject of your thesis.

Contact & funding

There are several ways of contacting universities or companies abroad.

  • Make the most of connections your lecturers have established to other institutions abroad. An official list is not available, please discuss your intention to work abroad directly with your lecturers.
  • Find out about the exchange and scholarship programmes at FAU (e.g. Erasmus+ , DAAD PROMOS ) and external programmes (e.g. by the University Centre for Bavaria and Latin-America ).

Bachelor and master dissertations - frequently asked questions, preliminaries.

The following material provides relevant information related to dissertations at the Chair of Information Systems (CIS). Unless stated otherwise, the information applies to both Bachelor and Master theses. We organize the page as an FAQ. You may wish to navigate directly to the parts that interests you most.

Table of Contents

  • Is there a fixed date at which I have to start with my dissertation?

Is there anything I should consider when choosing a starting time for my thesis?

  • Is there a maximum  or minimum length for my thesis? How long is a dissertation on average?

I plan to write my thesis in the next semester. What should I do beforehand?

Can i suggest my own topic, i was asked to prepare an extended abstract for a topic of my choice. what does that entail, are there any core research areas from which thesis topics are normally selected, is it possible to collaborate with industry, how do i find a topic, how about formatting requirements for my thesis, do i have to write my thesis in english/german, what is the typical structure of a bachelor thesis, i plan to apply for a master program, when do i have to start with my bachelor thesis, what is the typical structure of a master thesis, i understand that many theses at the cis involve empirical work. how do i acquire the data for such a task, do i have to complete certain modules before being eligible to write my thesis at the cis, in addition to mandatory modules, are there any other skills that i need/should possess, how do i register my thesis, is there a fixed data at which i have to start with my dissertation.

No. At present, we accept theses throughout the whole year. Please note that we may not be able to offer such flexible regime forever. Depending upon demand and resources, it may be necessary to implement a structured approach where all dissertations start at fixed dates (e.g., begin/end of a semester). However, by the time of writing, students can begin their dissertation anytime.

Back to the table of contents

You may want to consider that opportunities for personal meetings are somewhat limited during summer breaks due to conference attendance, research visits, etc. Therefore, if you seek very close collaboration with your supervisor, consider to schedule your thesis such that the majority of the writing time is within lecturing periods.

Is there a maximum or minimum length? How long is a dissertation on average?

On average, Bachelor and Master theses are 30 and 35 pages, respectively. Deviations are possible. See also the explanations on our new moodle page on dissertations .

It is good to plan well ahead. However, as far as we are concerned, there is not much that needs to be done long in advance. In particular, please understand that we allocate our thesis topics on a first come first serve basis. That means that we don’t reserve topics for students who plan to start their dissertation in a few months’ time. However, you may want to consider suggesting your own thesis topic. In such a case, we could fix a thesis topic before the start of the actual thesis.

Yes, you can. If you wish to work on a topic of your choice, please prepare an extended abstract and send it to your supervisor for discussion. We assess the potential of your proposition for a Bachelor/Master thesis and might suggest extensions/revisions. In general, we prefer topics that relate to our research areas . However, exceptions are possible, so feel free to elaborate any topic related to information systems research.

An extended abstract is about two to four pages long and should clarify:

  • What research question(s) you plan to analyze
  • What is the academic and practical importance of your topic
  • How your thesis will contribute to the existing literature

In addition, an extended abstract includes a selection of relevant literature.

There certainly are. In general, our research focuses on big data analytics (BDA). Approaches associated with the support of managerial decision-making and quantitative, data-driven methods are of particular interest. This scope offers a variety of research questions to be examined in a dissertation. Potential business applications to study include, but are not limited to:

  • Marketing and e-commerce
  • Consumer finance and risk management
  • Speculative financial and betting markets

In terms of methodology, we employ a broad variety of techniques to solve planning problems, explain decision maker behavior, and assess the effectiveness of formal decision aids. Examples of such planning methods include:

  • Ensemble selection (e.g. for marketing or credit-scoring problems)
  • Kalman filters (e.g. for time series data or real-time targeting of advertising in e-commerce)
  • Multi-armed bandit models (e.g. for or real-time targeting of advertising in e-commerce)
  • Deep learning (basically applicable everywhere)
  • Survival models (e.g. for price optimization in the automotive industry)
  • Choice models/hierarchical Bayesian models (e.g. for or real-time targeting of advertising in e-commerce or betting markets)
  • (Recurrent) neural networks (e.g. for turnover or financial markets predictions or in interaction with metaheuristics for model training or model selection)
  • Metaheuristics (e.g., to build predictive decision support models or develop normative decision aids)

Furthermore, there is a large body of literature on novel learning paradigms, which differ substantially from conventional explanatory (e.g. regression or classification) or descriptive (e.g. clustering) methods. Surveying the state-of-the-art in such fields and/or evaluating such modelling strategies in business settings is an interesting task for a dissertation. Some examples include:

  • Active learning
  • Causal machine learning
  • Learning with privileged information (e.g. financial forecasting)
  • Semi-supervised/transductive learning (e.g. for churn prediction)
  • Imbalanced learning (e.g. for marketing or credit scoring)
  • Multi-task learning (e.g. financial forecasting)
  • Reject inference (credit scoring)
  • Online learning

Yes, we support collaborative theses written with an industry partner. In general, industry partnerships are more common for master dissertations. However, writing a bachelor thesis with an industry partner is also feasible. In some cases, our list of open topics includes such collaborative theses. Alternatively, you can propose a topic that you’d like to study together with an industry partner. However, please note that we normally do not sign NDAs (non-disclosure agreements). If you are in contact with an organization where you’d like to write your thesis, you may want to check whether your industry partner accepts this policy.

That is the key question. In general, you can browse through our list of open topics and see whether some of our propositions fit your interests. Alternatively, you can propose a thesis topic to us, preferably but not necessarily in one of our research areas .

We do not enforce specific formatting requirements. Instead, we recommend that students follow the author guidelines of scholarly outlets such as, e.g., the European Journal of Operational Research.  Note that these guidelines might also mention a minimum/maximum length. Such recommendations do not apply to your thesis and can be ignored. Instead, please adhere to our own recommendations related to thesis length.

MSc. theses are generally prepared in English. For a BSc. thesis, you are free to decide whether to write in English or German.

There are some general guidelines that any academic thesis follows. If you have already participated in one of our seminars (for Bachelor or Master students), you will be familiar with these guidelines. Otherwise, make sure that you have a careful read through our recommendations related to academic writing .

In addition to general guidelines, a typical Bachelor thesis written at the CIS adopts one of three paradigms.

First, the majority of dissertations is organized as a literature survey or, in other words, a state-of-the-art . Consider for example the question of IT business value. To which extent increases the use of information and communication technologies the performance of a firm? Several research projects have been undertaken to shed light on this question. A Bachelor thesis can review this field, identify sub-streams in the literature, and distill some overall conclusions. In addition, it might be possible to identify research gaps in the literature. In a nutshell, such a thesis provides a holistic overview of a clear-defined field.

Second, a bachelor thesis can be organized as a meta-analysis. A good example for such an endeavor is the paper of Jamain and Hand (2008) , who conduct a meta-analysis for the field of consumer credit scoring. In brief, this field is concerned with the question how a money lender can predict whether a credit applicant would pay back her loan, if the loan were granted. You can imagine that many papers have been written about this topic, and you can also imagine that several of these papers present some sort of forecasting method. Often, the proposition of a novel forecasting method is accompanied by an empirical evaluation to showcase that the new method predicts well. Given a large number of empirical studies that adopt this approach (i.e., present and compare forecasting methods), a meta-analysis first gathers empirical data about these comparisons (i.e., papers). This could be, for example, i) how many different forecasting methods have been compared in a paper, ii) how many times did some method A beat some other method B, iii) which measures have been used to assess the accuracy of a forecasting methods, etc. Next, a meta-analysis performs some statistical analysis on this data and, in doing so, distills some overall conclusions; for example, method A is better than B. You see that the outcome is the same as in the previous setup of a Bachelor thesis. Only the way in which one arrives at this outcome differs. Clearly, not every topic facilitates a meta-analysis. If you are generally interested in this format, feel free to contact our team members to find out which possibilities are available.

Third, it is also possible to organize a Bachelor thesis as a ‘little Master thesis’. This means that you conduct your own research study, which, at the CIS, would typically entail some empirical or analytic work. Such a study can span the whole research process – from gathering relevant data over data analysis to interpreting the observed results and drawing conclusions, or focus on specific steps in this process. Consider once again the above example of credit scoring. Given some credit scoring data set, your task could be to compare some novel forecasting method to some established benchmark. Given the similarity to Master theses in terms of format and organization, we do not publish dedicated topics for Bachelor theses that fall into this category. Students who are interested in the “small-scale Master thesis format” can review our topics for Master dissertations and ask the corresponding supervisor whether the topic could be changed such that it fits the smaller scope of a Bachelor thesis.

Every Master program has its own rules. We cannot make any recommendations related to programs offered at other universities. More specifically, the following guidelines apply only to our Master program Information Systems .

If you are considering to apply for the above program, you need to proof that you have collected at least 150 ECTS by the time of application. Say you want to start your Master in IS at the Humboldt-University in the winter semester 2016/2017. Assume for example that the application deadline is 30 th of April 2015. So, by end of April, when submitting your application, your transcript must show at least 150 ECTS. It is not necessary that you have completed your Bachelor studies. In particular, you can still be involved with your Bachelor thesis, or does not even have started with your Bachelor thesis. However, you need at least 150 (see ZSP-HU 1.1.2) .

There are some general guidelines that any academic thesis must follow. If you have already participated in one of our seminars  (for  Bachelor  or  Master  students) , you will be familiar with these guidelines. Otherwise, make sure that you have a careful read through the recommendations related to academic writing .

In addition to these general guidelines, a typical Master thesis written at the CIS addresses a research question(s) in the business fields mentioned above and contributes to the literature through providing some novel insight (e.g., original empirical results, evidence in favor of or against previously derived hypotheses, a new piece of methodology, etc.). Most dissertations contain an empirical part related to some real-world planning problem. For example, evaluating the effectiveness of a novel method from the realms of big data analytics in a real-world setting through empirical experimentation is a common task for a Master thesis. Such endeavor may also include the development of an entirely new methodology or the extension of some known technique to better fulfill the requirements of the application setting in question.

There are several possibilities to acquire the data for dissertation. Examples include:

  • The master’s thesis is written in cooperation with an industry  partner who provides data
  • The data is collected during (as part of) the thesis (e.g., through accessing a data provider’s API, say Twitter, or web scraping)
  • The data comes from an academic data mining/forecasting competition (KDD Cup, Data Mining Cup, NN3 or NN5 Competition, etc.) or a Kaggle competition (www.kaggle.com)
  • The data is associated with a current research project of the CIS. At the moment projects/data sets from the following areas are available:
  • Direct marketing/churn modeling
  • Automotive industry/sales of pre-owned vehicles
  • Real-time targeting in e-commerce
  • Credit scoring or PD modeling
  • Markets for sports betting

The typical setting is such that students first complete some of our modules prior to starting their dissertation at the CIS. In particular, our seminars modules provide relevant background on the scientific method, academic writings, etc. Therefore, it is compulsory to complete the module Bachelorseminar Wirtschaftsinformatik to write a Bsc. thesis at the CIS. For master students, it is compulsory to complete one of our seminars, Masterseminar Information Systems or Applied Predivtive Analytics .

We gurantee that every student who has successfully completed the relevant seminar is given an opportunity to write her/his BSc./MSc. thesis at the CIS. Of course, there will still be a need to agree on the topic.

In general, completing our Bachelor/Master modules equips you with a firm understanding of research in information systems and big data analytics in particular. Moreover, our courses give you an opportunity to develop the skills typically needed to write a dissertation at the CIS.

Having said that, given your research interests and focus on analytic/empirical work, some useful skills include, e.g., scientific computing, databases, programming (preferably in Matlab, R, Python or Julia), econometrics and statistics, machine learning.

First of all, to be eligible to register for the final thesis you have to fulfill certain requirements (e.g. you must have completed certain modules or have earned a certain amount of ECTS – depending on your degree program). To verify that, you can consult the examination office. Afterwards, you have to receive a thesis application form in the student office that you need to fill in and hand in to your supervisor for signing (on the form you will have to indicate the exact datum when you have received the final topic). Afterwards, submit the signed registration form to the examination office: either give it personally during the office hours or send per post. You will also receive a copy of the filled form once the examination office processes the documents.

External Bachelor thesis

External work can be done e.g. in researching companies, at institutes of other departments or faculties of the University of Ulm, at non-university research institutions or at institutes of other universities.

Bachelor theses in Biology B. Sc. programs are "external" if they are not officially supervised by a person who is appointed as an examiner in the aforementioned programs and is allowed to prepare the expert opinion. Appointed examiners are, in addition to the professors and post-doctoral lecturers of the Department of Biology, all post-doctoral lecturers (also from other subjects) who are regularly involved in teaching in the degree programs with an effort of at least 1 SWS in compulsory or elective courses.

If you want to do an external Bachelor thesis, you have to get it approved by the examination board Biology in time (at least two weeks) before starting the thesis. For this purpose, please submit an (informal) application to the Biology Examination Committee, including your complete sender (address), and addressed to the chairperson(s) of the Examination Committee.

The application must contain a brief description of the planned bachelor thesis. This must indicate where the work is to be carried out and who is responsible for supervision there. As a rule, this person must have a habilitation. Furthermore, it must be clear from the application which methods will be used.

The brief description of the project can also be prepared as a separate letter by the potential supervisor and attached to the application. External work must always be reviewed by an examiner from biology in the sense mentioned above. You should already indicate in the application whom you could win as a reviewer.

Please send the application by email to Mrs Theilacker.

Your application will then be reviewed by the Examination Committee (PA) and you will be informed of the decision made as soon as possible.

The following criteria are important for the PA's decision:

  • adequate supervision must be ensured,
  • the subject must be biologically oriented,
  • the range of methods must also be biological and appropriate to a scientific thesis;
  • Topics that could also be carried out at institutes of the University of Ulm in a very similar way should not be prepared externally; if necessary, cooperations or the like can be sought here.

"Methods course"

In the bachelor's and master's degree courses in biology and biochemistry, there is a so-called "methods course" before the thesis. This is carried out by the supervisor with whom the thesis is being carried out and, among other things, topic-specific working methods that are required for the respective thesis are learned.

After successful completion, the supervisor enters the relevant proof of achievement in the university portal. Independent registration is not possible. Please note that in the case of internships carried out externally, the internal supervisor must record the performance record.

The "methods course" must be completed so that the thesis can be registered.

For students in the PO 2017, after passing the "methods course", a period begins to register the thesis in the study secretariat (in the bachelor: 2 weeks, in the master: 2 months).

Finally, you will find an overview of how the "methods course" is called in the individual courses and how many CP it includes:

Guidelines for Bachelor/Master Theses

This sheet contains the most important information for students that have been accepted for writing a thesis at our institute. If there are any open questions not answered here, please consult your supervisor.

General Information

Please read the following link of the computer science department for details regarding the registration and submission as well as the formal requirements of the thesis:  Hinweise für Studierende für Abschlussarbeiten . Please also look at the Formvorgaben für Abschlussarbeiten . Read the requirements of your examination regulations for theses and keep them in mind. While typically these requirements should already be covered by the "Hinweise für Studierende für Abschlussarbeiten" page, double check to make sure that this is the case. The university also offers a general FAQ for students writing a thesis . Note that this FAQ provides content for supervisors and examinors as well which you do not have to read.

Below, you find additional information about specifics at our institute. We do not repeat information from the links above.

Formal Procedure

  • Our secretary needs some data from you to prepare the thesis contract. Please send, as early as possible, the following data via email to our secretary:  address, phone number, e-mail address, matrikelnummer,  and  course of study
  • For the contract, we also need a short summary of your topic/task and a working title for the thesis (the title must be both in English and German. It can still be changed while working on the thesis). Your supervisor might ask you to prepare a first draft of the title and the summary which will then be edited.
  • Once the contract has been prepared, you can schedule a meeting with our secretary for formally registering the thesis. You need to bring the prepared registration form (please refer to https://www.student.uni-stuttgart.de/pruefungsorganisation/formulare/#id-959532c6 ). In case you do not know your working title for the field "Thema", please ask your supervisor. Our secretary will then inform you about the next steps.
  • If you have any questions (e.g., regarding the structure and contents of the thesis) or you encounter problems that you cannot solve yourself,  contact your supervisor . We will usually not initiate meetings ourselves; instead, students are responsible for scheduling meetings as they need them. We encourage you to get feedback from your supervisor on a regular basis.
  • You are required to submit 2 copies of your thesis (unless specified otherwise in the contract) plus one separate copy of the title page.
  • Please contact our secretary in order to make an appointment for the submission of your thesis.
  • Digital Submission: Send your final thesis (as PDF) as well as the required abstract txt file(s) to your supervisor at the University and our secretary by email. Please note that the digital version must be identical to the printed copies.
  • If your thesis includes source code or other digital artifacts, please ask you supervisor at the University on whether and how to submit those.
  • If you wrote your thesis with a company: Make sure that your thesis and other digital artifacts are approved for submission by the company. If in doubt: Talk to your advisor at the company.
  • Depending on your course of study, you might have to give a presentation that presents/summarizes your thesis (see below).
  • Contact your supervisor after the submission of the thesis to schedule the presentation. You should also tell him your course of study such that an appropriate length of the presentation can be determined.

Additional Information for Theses Written at an External Company

If you are writing your thesis at an external company, please keep the following additional details in mind:

  • We need some additional information about the external company that advises your thesis. Please send the name of the company, the address of the company, and contactinformation of your advisor at the company (name, e-mail address, phone number) to your supervisor at our institute.
  • The short summary of your topic/task and a working title for the thesis (see above) generally are proposed by the external company and then approved by our institute, possibly after some modifications. Please forward this information as early as possible to your supervisor at our institute.
  • When signing your contract with us, we will ask you whether your thesis can be published after the submission. Please verify beforehand whether your company allows for publication of the thesis.
  • Please note that if the company asks for a non-disclosure agreement, this must be set up between the company and the institute (or between you, the institute and the company; but never just between you and the company).
  • You have an advisor at the external company and a supervisor at our institute. The advisor typically is your first point of contact in case of problems. The supervisor is your contact for all administrative and examination related questions. This includes, for example, questions regarding the format and content of your thesis, structure, citation style, ... .
  • If the topic has to be modified, e.g., because some originally planned goal turned out to be unachievable, this has to be discussed with and confirmed by your supervisor at our institute.

Form of the Thesis

  • You have to write your thesis in LaTeX using the template from  https://github.com/latextemplates/scientific-thesis-template . 1)
  • Keep the form requirements from the computer science department in mind (see link at the top). The template should already meet those by default.
  • There is no fixed page count or limit. The number of pages strongly depends on the specific topic of the thesis.
  • You can write the thesis in German or in English. If you write in German, do not translate technical terms; use the English version for those.
  • Use a numerical-only bibliography style, e.g., numeric (see bibstyle and citestyle in config.tex ).

1) Have a look at the documentation before using it – the template has a lot of options.

Presentation After the Submission

  • In most cases, the length of the presentation is 30 minutes. After your presentation the audience will ask some questions about your thesis.
  • The presentation is not graded separately, but will influence the final grade of the thesis.
  • There is no mandatory template for presentation slides.
  • Please follow the advice for good presentations from our seminars. If you did not attend one of our seminars, ask your supervisor.

About DissOnline

The German National Library houses the largest national collection of online dissertations in Europe. We have been collecting online dissertations and theses since 1998. Since then, the collection has grown to more than 284,000 documents (as of November 2020).

Since these activities began under the aegis of DissOnline more than 20 years ago, electronic publishing has become a part of everyday university life. This is due to the close cooperation between universities, their libraries and computer centres, and representatives of academia as well as the long-standing support provided through projects funded by the German Research Foundation ( DFG ).

The DissOnline project was brought to a successful, sustainable conclusion. Stakeholders whose initiative had supported DissOnline then became free to transfer their commitment to other areas. In June 2012, the DissOnline advisory committee therefore decided to integrate the functions and information on the website www.dissonline.de into the German National Library’s services. This is particularly relevant in terms of the deposit of works with the German National Library. The extended metadata format XMetaDissPlus enables all types of publications and documents available in subject-specific and institutional repositories and on university servers to be deposited in just one fully automated transaction.

Deposit information

The DissOnline portal is also integrated into the German National Library's catalogue as a search option. This means that online dissertations are listed as a component of the German National Library’s collection alongside traditional printed dissertations, other online university publications and academic literature. Our catalogue offers a wide variety of search options that are constantly being developed and optimised further. You will find an explanation of all the available search options here:

Guide to searching dissertations and theses in the German National Library’s catalogue (only available in German)

In order to enhance the international visibility of the collection, the metadata for all German online dissertations is continually delivered to DART , the European portal for online dissertations. NDLTD : Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations is committed to the promotion of electronic publishing in the academic sector beyond Europe. The International Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) takes place every year.

Statistical information

Online university publications have been collected, catalogued and archived at the German National Library since 1998. The illustration shows how the percentage of online publications has developed over the years since this work began. Here it must be considered that although dissertations are subject to a mandatory publication obligation and an obligation to be placed on deposit with the German National Library, only an approximate impression of doctoral and publication activities in Germany can be given.

As the statistics refer to the year in which the publication was released rather than the year in which it was deposited, it is quite possible that figures may rise in succeeding years. This applies in particular to the most recent full year.

Graphical representation: Proportion of online publications in relation to the total number of dissertations and habilitation by year of publication in the collection of the German National Library

The DissOnline projects

  • 1998–2000 Dissertations Online
  • 2003–2004 Establishment of a coordinating body for online university publications
  • 2005–2007 DissOnline Tutor
  • 2005–2008 Establishment of a portal for online university publications

The intensive cooperation between all partners and sponsors also made it possible to start collecting dissertations and theses on a voluntary basis in 1998, eight years before the amendment to the Law Regarding the German National Library and the provision stipulating the mandatory deposit of online publications.

Bachelor Studies

Universities and programmes, eligibility, application procedure, german or english medium, living as a student, working in germany, get guidance.

German universities combine research and studies and have been the scene for ground-breaking discoveries such as the printing press, computer and mp3 that have become an inseparable part of our modern lives. They offer excellent quality of education, low or no tuition fees, career opportunities after graduation and above all social security. The route to Bachelor’s degree in Germany depends upon the kind of school-leaving certificate you have or the board of the school that you attend.

Germany has different types of universities. Take a look, so that you know which one would suit you the best. The difference lies in focus  and courses that these universities offer.

How do I choose a university in Germany?

There are various kinds of universities in Germany. A majority of these belong to either of the following categories:

bachelor thesis germany

© DAAD India

Universities and Universities of Technology (TU) are research-oriented. They offer a wide variety of subjects and can award doctorate degrees.

Universities of Applied Sciences ( Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften – HAW/FH), on the other hand, are practice-oriented and offer courses mainly in engineering, business administration, social sciences and design. These have strong links to the industry and offer interesting possibilities such as joint supervision for your master thesis, where your professor and the company can together guide you .

HAWs do not award doctoral degrees, however as a master degree holder from a HAW, you are in principle eligible to apply for PhD at a university.

Your interest and inclination should define which of the two kinds of institutions you choose!

Which is the best university in Germany?

The German answer to this question is: There is no “best university”, neither in one subject and certainly not across all subjects.

bachelor thesis germany

DAAD India © CHE Ranking

Germany offers a multidimensional ranking, considering various criteria that are important from a student’s perspective. For example, student and staff judgments on quality of teaching, atmosphere at the university, library and other equipment, student numbers, average study duration, number of graduations, third party funding etc. This way you get a good picture of the strengths and weaknesses of each university on www.university-ranking.de Here you can find your programme by selecting a subject, a university or even a city in Germany!

What kind of Bachelor programmes does Germany offer?

Germany offers bachelor programmes in the fields of science, engineering, humanities and social sciences, management, arts, medicine etc. The courses start either in winter or summer semester depending up on the university. The duration is generally from 3 to 4 years as per the subject.

Around 300 courses are available in English medium and around 2000 courses in German medium.

A comprehensive database of all study programmes, in both German and English, is available on www.myguide.de .

It is always a good idea to check if the university’s requirements and your qualifications match. And then you can start with the application procedure.

Am I eligible to apply for a bachelors degree course?

Eligibility to a bachelor’s degree course in Germany depends on the higher education entrance qualification one has earned in the home country. In principle you are eligible to apply for a bachelor programme if you fulfil one of the following criteria:

  • Completing IB, GCE or similar internationally recognised examination with the requisite subject combination
  • Getting a rank in IIT Joint Entrance Examination (Advance) for admission to courses in technology and natural sciences
  • Successful completion of one academic year at a higher education institution in home country in the relevant subject field
  • Passing the qualification assessment examination in Germany, called Feststellungsprüfung .

In Germany, every university is autonomous. This means that every university/ study programme has its own set of criteria for admitting students. So please check the university website, and specifically the programme you are interested in to find out the exact admission requirements.

bachelor thesis germany

It is the eligibility that defines the steps in the application procedure. Find out where you need to apply.

How do I apply - after internationally recognised examination such as IB/GCE?

An IB diploma is generally recognised as a school-leaving certificate and offers either direct general university admission with a free choice of subject or subject-specific admission, depending on the subjects listed in the IB diploma. Read more

The “General Certificate of Education” (GCE) can lead to a  direct but strictly subject-specific university entrance qualification in Germany.  Read more

For German taught programmes higher level of German language proficiency may be required depending on the course and the university. Do connect with the university for more information.

How do I apply - with JEE ranking?

With JEE Advanced ranking you may apply directly to a German university for subject-specific course. For German taught programmes higher level of German language proficiency may be required depending on the course and the university.

Do connect with the university for more information.

How do I apply - after one year bachelors?

Completing one year of bachelors in home country may allow you for a subject-specific admission to a bachelor programme. For German taught programmes higher level of German language proficiency may be required depending on the course and the university.

How do I apply - for Studienkolleg?

How to prepare for fsp.

Studienkolleg or foundation/ bridge course helps foreign students prepare for the Feststellungsprüfung . On successfully passing this exam, which has a written and an oral component, you are eligible to apply for a bachelor’s degree course. Please remember that success in this examination does not automatically lead to an admission to a university or FH/ HAW, you need to apply for a university for admission.

How do I apply for a Studienkolleg ?

bachelor thesis germany

Depending on the degree programme or higher education institution of your choice, you can apply directly to the institution or via  uni-assist .

The eligibility criteria to apply for enrolment in a Studienkolleg are a valid school leaving certificate (final board exam) with relevant subject fields and proficiency in German language (approx. B2 level based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Your subject knowledge and if applicable German language proficiency will be tested in an entrance exam ( Aufnahmeprüfung ) by the course coordinators before you enrol yourself in a foundation course.

Aufnahmeprüfung and Studienkolleg take place in Germany and so does the Festellungsprüfung .

What type of Studienkollegs are there and which one should I attend?

Studienkolleg is a full-time course with about 32 hours of instruction per week and usually takes up to two semesters to complete. There are different Studienkollegs meant for different subject fields and depend upon if one wants to study at a university or at a university of applied sciences.

Studienkollegs  for studying at universities:

  • M-course: Medical, biological and pharmaceutical degrees
  • T-course: Mathematical, science or technical degrees
  • W-course: Business, economic and social science degrees
  • G-course: Humanity degrees or German studies
  • S-course: Language degrees

Studienkollegs for studying at universities of applied sciences:

  • TI-course: Technical and engineering degrees
  • WW-course: Economics and business degrees
  • GD-course: Design and art degrees
  • SW-course: Social science degrees

In Germany, every university is autonomous. This means that every university / study programme has its own set of criteria for admitting students. It is important to check with the higher education institution of your choice to find out if the FSP of the Studienkolleg you want to attend will be accepted to avoid any potential problems.

What is an APS certificate? Do I need it? How can I get it?

APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) or the Academic Evaluation Centre is responsible for the evaluation of your documents for their authenticity. Once your documents are checked and deemed genuine, APS India issues the APS certificate. From November 2022, APS certificate is mandatory for student visa applications if you have completed or are pursuing your studies in India . This process has been introduced to speed up the visa procedure.

Some German universities may expect you to submit the APS certificate when you apply for their degree programmes.

To get the APS certificate, familiarise yourself with the requirements. Collect all the necessary documents and register yourself online. You will need to transfer the processing fees and submit printed and signed form together with the documents for verification to APS. If you have a German or EU-funded scholarship or hold an international degree certificate you do not need to apply for an APS certification. You will get all this information and more on www.aps-india.de .

Germany offers education in German as well as in English medium. Depending up on the eligibility criteria to bachelor programme the language requirements vary.

Can I do my Bachelors completely in English medium?

Most students from the region encompassing India, Bhutan, Nepal etc. need to go through the bridging course called Studienkolleg which necessitates fluency in German (approx. B1 level).

The number of Studienkollegs in English medium is low. Students attending these Studienkolleg need to apply for English taught bachelor programme which are also fewer in number than German taught programmes. (The Freshman Programme of FH Aachen , Foundation year of Jacobs university are examples of English taught Studienkolleg .)

Can I do my Bachelors in German medium?

Yes, you can of course do it in German, just that universities will demand very good German language skills. Your German language proficiency will have to be certified through standardised examinations. The course co-ordinator of your selected university can provide you the details.

Must I learn German?

As a student in Germany, your life will not be limited to the university campus. You will surely want to interact with people, do your internships, travel through the country-side and make the best of your time there. You may also want to gather work experience in Germany or build your career there. This is where knowledge of German will be of great advantage for you!

Universities offer beginner and well as advanced level courses where you can learn German. You can also start learning the language while you are still in your home country at the  Goethe-Instituts (Max-Mueller Bhavan)/ Goethe-Zentrums .

While in a foreign country being able to manage your finances on your own is very important. You would need to plan your budget keeping your living expenses, travel costs and tuition fees if any.

Do I really not need to pay tuition fees?

In Germany, education is subsidised by the state and therefore state-funded institutions of higher education typically charge no tuition fee. So, in Germany virtually every student gets a scholarship!

Certain specialised courses and courses offered by private universities do attract fees. You will always frond information about the fees in the databases provided on this page and also on the university webpages and My Guide .

You will need to pay semester contribution of around Euro 300, depending upon the university and the services or benefits provided.

Studienkollegs at state-funded universities do not charge tuition fees.

What kind of budget should I have in my mind?

Apart from the tuition fees, if any,  you will require about EUR 934 per month for subsistence i.e. housing, food, clothing, study material and other expenses such as health insurance and leisure activities. The precise split up for this amount will be updated soon. The amounts can vary from city to city, and of course from lifestyle to lifestyle!

The following table shows the split up at the time of the last budget indicated in 2019.

Are there any scholarships available?

Generally DAAD funding in Germany is available in principle for research i.e. for masters, PhD and above.

  • Visa for research

Would you like to join the dynamic world of research in Germany? Then a visa for research is probably exactly what you need.

  • Visa & residence
  • Types of visa
  • Other types of visa
  • Special regulation for assistants in nursing
  • Visa for self-employment
  • Visa for language acquisition
  • Visa for a study-related internship EU
  • Special regulations for professional drivers
  • Special regulations for artists
  • Special regulations for language teachers
  • Professional athletes and coaches
  • Special regulations for esports professionals

Are you looking to work in Germany as a researcher? If so, you will need to apply for a visa for research in accordance with Section 18d on the Residence Act - AufenthG . To find out whether you require a visa to enter Germany, see Who needs a visa?

What are the requirements to receive a visa for research?

  • You have concluded a hosting agreement or a work contract with a research institute in Germany.
  • The research institute commits itself in writing to cover your living and travel costs back to your country of origin, which otherwise have to be covered by public funds. This commitment applies for up to 6 months after the research position has ended. This clause is not applicable if your research position is primarily funded by public funds.

Do you meet these requirements? Learn about the procedure for the entry and visa process .

You are considered a “researcher” if you have at least a PhD/doctorate or a suitable university degree enabling you to access PhD degree programmes ( Article 3 of Directive (EU) 2016/801 ).

Are you a highly qualified professional in the fields of science or research? Do you not fulfil the requirements for a research visa in accordance with Section 18d of the Residence Act (AufenthG) ? If so, the EU Blue Card  could be an alternative for you.

What opportunities does the visa for research offer?

The visa or residence permit for research is issued for at least one year and gives you many advantages:

  • With this residence permit, you can work at the research institute listed in your work contract or you can take on a teaching position.
  • It is possible to extend your residence permit provided you fulfil the same requirements.
  • You can conduct research and teach for a limited period of time in other EU states (with the exception of the United Kingdom, Ireland and Denmark).
  • After four years, you can receive a settlement permit  in Germany. You must, however, meet the requirements for a settlement permit .

Once your research position has ended, you have up to nine months to find another position in Germany that is in line with your qualifications. You must then apply for a residence permit for job seekers in accordance with Section 20 (3) no. 2 of the Residence Act (AufenthG) at your nearest foreigners authority .

Doctoral students from third countries can obtain a residence permit for research. As a requirement, they must complete their doctoral thesis as part of a work contract with a research facility in Germany. If the research position is a component of the PhD program as a full-time program, only a  visa for studying  can be issued.

Mobility arrangements for international researchers

International researchers from non-EU member states who are legally residing in EU Member States may perform part of their research in Germany. In such cases, there are two options that allow you to stay in Germany:

  • A residence permit for short-term research stays is not required: if you already hold a residence title from another EU Member State for the purpose of research, and you would like to stay in Germany for a maximum of 180 days within 360 days as part of a research project, you do not need to apply for a German visa or residence permit. The only requirement to fulfil is that the research institute in Germany for which you will be conducting research must inform the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) about the planned research. Go to the website of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) to find out what your research institute needs to inform the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees about, in addition to the procedure for doing so.
  • You must hold a valid residence title of another EU Member State for research purposes. This permit must be valid for the duration of your planned stay in Germany for research purposes.
  • You must submit a copy of a valid passport or travel document issued in lieu of a passport.
  • You have a concluded a hosting agreement or a contract with a research facility in Germany.

You must apply for the residence permit at your local foreigners authority at least 30 days prior to starting your stay in Germany. The application can also be submitted to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF).

Further information on career opportunities for international scientists and researchers can be obtained in the " Research " section.
