Twenty-five years ago, I — and millions of Hindi film fans around the world — saw our first Karan Johar movie. “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” — which currently holds the top spot in IndieWire’s list of the best rom-coms on Netflix — was a superhit and instant classic, a story of love and friendship that stood the test of time and charms audiences to this day.
And it’s just a damn good time.
As much as it tracks the blooming romance of Rocky Randhawa (Ranveer Singh) and Rani Chatterjee (Alia Bhatt), “Rocky Aur Rani” starts with the pair reuniting Rocky’s grandfather Kanwal (Dharmendra) and Rani’s grandmother Jamini (Shabana Azmi), who spent a week together back in 1978. Both relationships intertwine the dichotomous Randhawa and Chatterjee families, who go together about as well as oil and water.
That’s not because the families are so drastically different — though the film feels the need to explicitly stress this repeatedly — but mainly because of the iron fist of Rocky’s grandmother Dhanlakshmi (Jaya Bachchan), who runs both the household and a business empire with steely authority. She doesn’t take kindly to her husband openly reigniting an old flame despite their loveless marriage, and even less kindly to Rocky’s idea that he and Rani switch homes and live with each other’s families for three months.
Apart from the tauted hero and heroine, “Rocky Aur Rani” is a knockout showing for Bachchan. A staple of Hindi cinema since the 1960s (her first film was Satyajit Ray’s “Mahanagar”), Bachchan rose to stardom in a time when women’s roles were still constricted, yet still managed to create indelible female characters along with her peers. Her mother figure is the anchor of Johar’s “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham,” but still relegated mostly to warm smiles and lots of crying. “Rocky Aur Rani” gives her free reign with comedy and villainy, and she commands the screen with both. Her comedic timing rivals Singh’s, and Dhanlakshmi’s death glare belongs in the Hall of Fame right next to any role played by Amrish Puri.
Two things that make an immediate and wonderful impression are Eka Lakhani’s costuming and Ishita Moitra’s dialogue writing, both of which quickly piece together who these characters are in a film that doesn’t have much time to spend on their lives beyond family drama. Bhatt is draped in one gorgeous sari after another, and Singh appears in a range of designer tees and printed shirts, buttoned as low as public decency will allow.
Though it purports to be a tale of two houses, “Rocky Aur Rani” takes fairly obvious sides, painting heroes and villains and points of view as right or wrong. The Randhawas are portrayed as old-fashioned, conservative, and oppressive, while the Chatterjees, though somewhat snobbish, are liberal, open-minded, accepting. They warm to Rocky far earlier than any of the Randhawas to Rani. The film rarely attributes this to cultural differences between the Indian states of Bengal and Punjab (and why would it, when “Vicky Donor” centered the same conflict so delightfully in 2012?) — but still relies on those stereotypes — and as such becomes a matter of class and education. The themes are less heavy-handed than “Barbie,” even though they grow repetitive (and include a left field connection to cancel culture).
Pritam’s songs are serviceable as always, but no longer the groundbreaking hits he used to deliver; the catchiest track is “What Jhumka?” mainly because of its riff on the 1966 classic “Jhumka Gira Re,” and “Ve Kamleya” for its emotive function.
What remains to be seen is if “Rocky Aur Rani,” like so many modern Bollywood blockbusters, will have any longevity compared to the classics of the past. What makes Johar’s early work so indelible — what his imitators, and even his own later projects, have failed to emulate — is how they keep the audience coming back. I’m part of a generation that grew up watching, rewatching, quoting, and copying “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” and “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.” Nostalgia is nostalgia for a reason, finding comfort in films from childhood, but I can’t imagine young children who see “Rocky Aur Rani” having the same relationship with this film, or with most recent commercial successes.
Then again, the themes skew older, targeting not only Rocky and Rani’s generation but their parents and grandparents stuck in time. For “Rocky Aur Rani,” the true measure of success will be outside of Rockyland (yes, I’m invoking Barbie Land) and out here in the real world.

Wogma rating: Add to that never-watched 'To Watch' list
Quick review: Experimental, it is. But not an experiment that I enjoyed. It could be a me thing, though. The film’s subject matter is stuff that I actively avoid in real life. To top it off, my mind couldn’t keep up with the chaos + frenzied presentation.
Streaming Partner: Netflix

Quick review: The film is a metaphor for its subject matter—relationships. It starts with excitement and freshness, goes through a phase where the effort shows, and moves into a plainness, that’s simple but boring.
Wogma rating: Add to 'must watch' list
Quick review: Ali injects a touch of experimentation with youthful vigor. Rehman pulsates. Dosanjh and Chopra embody innocence & liveliness. Kamil's lyrics enhance the narrative's depth. Together, they weave a compelling narrative.

Maidaan - Review
Wogma rating: Watch but no rush
Quick review: A quiet, calm film with rushes that a football match can give to fans. Football enthusiast or not, the real-life story makes you clap for its hero. Watch it for the coach of the Indian football team of the 50s and early 60s, S A Rahim.
Bade Miyan Chote Miyan - Review
Wogma rating: Watch if you have nothing better to do
Quick review: It’s not the worst thing you will see. Only because Bade Miyan Chote Miya starring Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda exists. The action is crores combusting into prime meaninglessness. My cousin who is a PJ star cracks better PJs, just please don’t tell him.
Crew - Review
Quick review: Torn between shouting out ‘three cheers to a proper women-in-the-lead film and demanding a better-written film for the women in the lead. (Streaming Partner: Netlfix)
Yodha - Review
Quick review: Slick action, decent story with adequate twists and turns. But falls into the usual problematic trope of glamourising an insubordinate know-it-all. That along with the jingoism makes a lot of Yodha an exasperating watch rather than an enjoyable one.
(Streaming Partner: Prime Video)
Shaitaan - Review
Quick review: This is some well-made horror. You relate, you clutch your heart, your tummy carries a vacuum. But, it certainly should have been crisper and the verbosity in the climax takes away from the impact.
Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya - Review
Quick review: Easy-going situational fun with a conscience. Doesn’t diss on anything while passing a message as subtly as it can. Well and warmly written characters, situations, and a story.

Bollywood star/producer Salman Khan is a man called India ( literally ) in "Bharat," a corny drama about the title character's quest to support and do right by his family in post-partition India. Khan plays Bharat, a stolid, nearly unflappable man who was separated from his father and younger sister on August, 15, 1947, the day that India gained its independence from England and was separated from modern-day Pakistan. Bharat is basically Paul Bunyan, Captain America, and Forrest Gump all rolled into one—only more Indian. He has lived many lives—as a daredevil motorcyclist, a Navy mechanic, and an oil-drilling wildcat—and each one brings out the most flattering sides of benevolent muscleman Khan, who is very much playing to type.
Bharat is surreally charismatic: he subdues gun-toting pirates by dancing like super-star Amitabh Bachchan , woos the love of his life ( Katrina Kaif ) by reciting poetry, and generally earns better working/living conditions for himself and his peers by delivering impassioned speeches about India's greatness. One of the main pleasures of watching "Bharat" is seeing Khan coast on his considerable charms as he and Kaif—who frequently outshines Khan, as she previously did in the goofy but winsome 2017 spy thriller " Tiger Zinda Hai "—endure, by sheer force of conviction, through several key moments in India's nation-building history. Khan isn't always strong enough to stick several big, sappy emotional moments (ie: whenever he has to do more than just smolder boyishly). But he and his co-stars are sometimes attractive enough to make the otherwise ridiculous "Bharat" seem believable.
And boy, is "Bharat" incredible: Khan's character, now middle-aged, regales his extended family's members with wild (but true enough!) tales of astonishing humble-ness in the face of changing values. In his time, Bharat recalls coming, seeing, and conquering everything he desired. First he masters and then quits a fulfilling job as an Evel Knievel-style stunt driver, but only after he realizes that a thrilling gig and an attractive partner ( Disha Patani ) aren't as important as the example he's setting for India's impressionable youths. Next: Bharat travels to and then flees from "somewhere in the Middle East" to make his fortune, but only after he falls in love with sassy forewoman Kumud Raina (Kaif) and rescues some inept co-workers from a deadly mining incident. Then he travels to Malta as a ship's mechanic (despite having no mechanical skills), but leaves that position after he tames the aforementioned pirates and helps his friend and constant bromantic companion Vilayati ( Sunil Grover ) to romance the woman of his dreams. Each episode in Bharat's life only serves to confirm his affable nature and deathless loyalty. No matter how unsolvable a given problem may seem—only he can solve it.
Khan's broad, muscular shoulders are often capable of carrying such a wide load. He's most convincing when Bharat is primarily defined by Khan's hip-waggling strut, broad pout, and appraising stare. He makes a white, bedazzled jump-suit look good; hell, Khan makes a John-Waters-style pencil mustache look good. Khan's only really unconvincing when he has to cry, beg, or exhibit any other complex emotions, as he must in a crucial scene involving one of Bharat's long-lost relative.
But for the most part, Khan is perfect as the happy-go-lucky Bharat: he's light enough on his feet, as we see in dance numbers where he commands a battalion of back-up dancers, who dutifully lift him upon their shoulders. The man is as bulky and as proud of it as Macho Man Randy Savage during his heyday, but his collaborators usually know how to bring out the best in him. There just aren't enough scenes where Khan gets to flex, since "Bharat" director Ali Abbas Zafar and co-writer Varun V. Sharma inevitably spend way too much time re-establishing their happy-go-lucky protagonist's love for Mother India. Still: there are several scenes where Khan reminds viewers that he's not only very comfortable in his own skin, but knows how to look good for the camera. Sometimes, that's more than enough.
Then again, I often wondered why Kaif wasn't given more screentime. She steals almost every scene she's in with a couple of coy winks and knowing smiles, as in an irresistible musical number where Raina convinces Bharat to talk to his mother about the possibility of being a "live-in" (ie: unmarried) couple. Kaif's joyful, commanding performance brings Rita Hayworth's show-stopping dance in "Gilda" to mind, especially when Kaif's song returns to its chorus: "Baby, come hither." Anything Khan can do, Kaif can do better, like when Raina flirts with Bharat while pretending to be a mustachioed caterer: "The sweets are ready and so am I." Khan's brand of can-do heroism is fine enough, but I don't think I'm alone in wishing that there were a lot more where Kaif's light-hearted, but commanding performance came from.

Srikanth Movie Review: Rajkummar Rao Captivates You In A Tale Of Resilience & Breaking Barriers
There's honesty in tushar hiranandani's vision of how he wanted to convey srikanth bolla's journey on the big screen..
Star Cast: Rajkummar Rao, Jyotika, Alaya F, Sharad Kelkar, Jameel Khan
Director: Tushar Hiranandani
What’s Good: Rajkummar Rao & Jyothika’s performances, the storytelling
What’s Bad: The second half gets a bit lost
Loo Break: Can take it during the romantic song in the first half
Watch or Not?: If you want more such feel-good and inspiring stories, yes!
Language: Hindi
Available On: Theatrical release
Runtime: 2 hours
In the heart of Andhra Pradesh’s Machilipatnam, a visually impaired boy was born, and his father named him ‘Srikanth’, after the renowned Indian cricketer. Initially, his parents struggled with the news of their son’s disability. But Srikanth never allows his condition to break his spirit. Tushar Hiranandani’s film portrays Srikanth’s journey from a small village boy to a symbol of strength and achievement, based on the real-life story of Srikanth Bolla.
Srikanth Movie Review: Script Analysis
Jagdeep Siddhu and Sumit Purohit penned the story. The first half excels in its narrative, tracing Srikanth’s journey from rural life to pursuing higher studies abroad. While maintaining a light tone, the film sensitively addresses the challenges Srikanth faces, from bullying due to his disability to fighting against the unfair rules of the Indian education system to pursue his passion.
The film’s intent is not merely to inspire us, but also to shed light on the struggles faced by individuals like Srikanth in society. The profound portrayal of his heartbreak upon failing to secure admission to IIT resonates deeply, highlighting how there’s only more struggle his way in everything he does. What I liked is how the movie doesn’t make you feel gloomy consistently with Bolla’s challenges. So, the makers added several humorous moments that made the narrative fun.
In the second half, the story delves into the harsh realities of the job market, where, despite his qualifications, Srikanth is dealing with unemployment. He is discouraged, but as the movie says: “People like him cannot run; they can only fight back.” So, he embarks on the entrepreneurial path, facing initial setbacks. Furthermore, the plot gets complicated with a political twist. I understand it’s inspired by real events, but the whole sequence somehow dulls the excitement that was built right from the start. While the pacing slows down during the political drama, the narrative regains momentum in the final act, offering glimpses of hope amidst hardships.
Srikanth Movie Review: Star Performance
Rajkummar Rao’s portrayal of Srikanth Bolla is nothing short of brilliant, capturing every nuance of the character with authenticity and depth. His performance, from subtle gestures that resemble Srikanth Bolla’s body language to mastering the subtle dialect, embodies Srikanth’s determination and passion. Rao brings a certain charm and wit in his portrayal, which leaves you in awe.
Jyothika shines as Devika, Srikanth’s mentor. She infuses the character with warmth and strength and keeps him grounded. Srikanth’s journey would’ve been incomplete without Devika, and the movie’s beauty would’ve fallen short without Jyothika’s exceptional performance. Alaya F, as Swathi, Srikanth’s love interest, adds a touch of tenderness to the narrative. Sharad Kelkar delivers a solid performance as Ravi Mantha, the investor in Srikanth’s venture.
Srikanth Movie Review: Direction, Music
There’s honesty in Tushar Hiranandani’s vision of how he wanted to convey Srikanth Bolla’s journey on the big screen. Right from the start, it’s evident that his aim is to focus on how physical shortcomings didn’t discourage Bolla’s ambitions. Tushar steers clear of melodrama and presents Srikanth’s story with sincerity. Despite occasional preachiness in the dialogue, the film never succumbs to pity. The director intends to celebrate Srikanth’s resilience and determination instead, while also bringing our attention to how much our country has to grow when it comes to equal rights for every kind of individual.
With the energetic background score of “Papa Kehte Hain,” the film elevates its narrative, though the songs by Tanishk Bagchi and Sachet-Parampara are just okay.
Srikanth Movie Review: The Last Word
Overall, Tushar Hiranandani’s film about Srikanth’s journey is a beautiful ode to human spirit and determination. It tells us that what we see as weaknesses can be another person’s strengths. Rajkummar Rao’s stellar performance and the compelling narrative about how dreams are beyond what we see through our eyes will leave a smile on your face.
Three and a half stars!

‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’: Inside Netflix’s Big-Budget Gambit to Woo Indian Audiences

Back in 2019, on a visit to Los Angeles, celebrated Indian director Sanjay Leela Bhansali stopped in at the offices of Netflix . In his informal five-minute meeting with CEO Ted Sarandos, Bhansali pitched an idea — it would be an opulent tale of warring courtesans set amid India’s struggle for independence. Sarandos greenlit the project on the spot.
Popular on Variety
At the time, Bhansali — known for his operatic filmmaking style — was coming off “Devdas,” a period romance based on an Indian literary classic, which premiered at Cannes in 2002 and earned a BAFTA nomination. Some 16 years passed, during which his directorial vision grew grander, encompassing historical epics “Bajirao Mastaani” (2015) and “Padmaavat” (2018).
But Bhansali found himself periodically returning to “Heeramandi.”
“I always like to keep a story in my mind for at least eight to 10 years before I start making it,” he says, “because then I feel completely familiar with it.”
By 2019, Bhansali knew the expansive subject couldn’t be contained in a feature film. He’d seen what Netflix could do with a sprawling narrative like “The Crown,” says Monika Shergill, VP of content for Netflix India, and he “felt that there could be a possibility of telling this story in a longer format.”
“Heeramandi” has all the elements that Indian audiences adore — song and dance sequences, melodrama, intrigue, patriotism, a big-name cast and breathtaking visuals. Yet Bhansali’s main challenge was to tell a story that would appeal to a country where 65% of the population of 1.4 billion is younger than 35, and largely unaware of the forgotten world of courtesans. So he kept the cinematography and edit patterns modern, and the dialogue “saucy” and laced with one-liners.
But Bhansali was unsparing in the details — even if “Heeramandi” would be watched on one of India’s 575 million smartphones. The textiles and designs of the period were painstakingly re-created, and 80% of the jewelry that adorns the tawaifs was real, necessitating the presence of security on set. For the cast, there was Urdu-language diction and body-language training.
“It is definitely not easy when you’re working with a perfectionist, and also you yourself were trying to achieve that perfection. I didn’t want mediocre work. If I’m getting a platform, where I have a director like Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Netflix and a series on this grand scale, I didn’t want it easy,” said actor Manisha Koirala, who previously worked with Bhansali on “Khamoshi” in 1996.
India’s streaming market is fiercely competitive. With subscription rates starting at $1.75 a month, Netflix is looking to significantly increase its foothold in the country, where it has about 12 million subscribers, per industry estimates. “Heeramandi” is its latest gambit to attract users, not just in India but globally. The show is subtitled in 35 languages and dubbed in 14.
Asked if the show is likely to be India’s “Squid Game”-like breakout, “It does have both authenticity and a certain exotic element,” Shergill says. “It is really exceptional and beautiful. So I’m hoping the story resonates [and] the craft of filmmaking comes together for people.”
For Bhansali and Beg, who visited Lahore (in present-day Pakistan) and met the descendants of the courtesans, the series is the culmination of their dream.
“All of those tawaifs who are existing now are blessing us that finally, we’re going to put them on the screen,” Bhansali says. “And it was always on my list of things to make. So finally, I’m happy that I’ve made it.”
