Positive Messages

Bad things happen, but it's up to you how you react to them. Serving others can give you strength and purpose. It can also teach you empathy. Focus on the positive and keep moving forward, one step at a time. The unhoused shouldn't be treated as less than human. "Many hands make light work." Stay-at-home parenting is work, but those who undertake this sometimes have trouble re-entering the workforce.

Positive Role Models

Cyndi and Phillip turn a difficult situation into an opportunity to help others. They learn and demonstrate compassion in caring for unhoused people. Phillip learns that responding to bullying with violence doesn't get positive results, but responding with kindness can. A pastor, a grandmother, a boss, and the local community show up to help when people need it.

Diverse Representations

One main character has an unspecified mental illness. People are unhoused and some explain how they got that way. At least one secondary character is Black; most of the principal characters are White and Christian.

Violence & Scariness

A man has an unnamed mental illness that prompts violence, paranoia, disorientation, and bad decision-making. He appears in one scene to be considering suicide, and he pushes another man to the ground, threatening to punch him. He winds up living on the street, where he falls very ill, and his wife and son find him unconscious on the street. The woman is called to the morgue to identify what officials believe is her husband's body. Schoolchildren tease and bully each other; one fights back with a punch that results in a bloody nose. A fire breaks out in a storage unit. A woman describes losing her job and becoming unhoused after serving in the military. An unhoused man gets angry and appears threatening.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that 5000 Blankets is a faith-based film with characters showing compassion to unhoused people after a father with a mental illness goes missing and is thought to be living on the street. Some of the scenes involving the man's illness, which prompt him to act violently and appear to consider suicide and suffer paranoid delusions, could be intense for young viewers. Other potentially scary scenes include the revealing of a body in a morgue, some school bullying and fights, and depictions of people struggling with homelessness. The main characters attend church regularly and receive advice from their pastor. A woman discovers her husband has racked up debt, and she must sell her house and get a job to make ends meet. What's the Story?

5000 BLANKETS is the story of Cyndi Saunders ( Anna Camp ), a woman whose husband Bobby ( Rob Mayes ) disappears and is presumed to be living on the streets due to mental illness. His disappearance sends Cyndi out to the streets to look for him. There, she encounters an unexpected number of unhoused people. She befriends one, Delia (Cindy Hogan), and she and her son Phillip (Carson Minniear) start a program to collect and donate blankets to people living on the streets. Despite being forced to sell her house and get a job due to Bobby's debts, Cyndi and Phillip transform their hardships into a thriving non-profit organization that involves their whole community.

Is It Any Good?

A compelling true story and fine performance from star Anna Camp elevate this otherwise middling TV movie. Camp is best known for her comedic roles in the Pitch Perfect series and Netflix's Desperados , so it's good to see her take on a more dramatic turn in 5000 Blankets . The film's script and structure are predictable, so it rests on Camp's shoulders to raise the film above that. Repetitive church scenes and attempts at visualizing mental illness risk undermining Camp's work, but ultimately this is a powerful and inspiring human story of finding self through serving others.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about the depiction of homelessness in 5000 Blankets . What did you learn about why different characters were living on the street? Did the portrayal feel realistic? Why or why not?

How do Cyndi and Phillip demonstrate compassion ? How does this benefit them as well as others?

The film is inspired by a true story. Where could you go for more information about the real people behind this story?

What did you think about the way Bobby's mental illness is portrayed using disorienting camera movements, effects, and sounds? Did this give you a sense of what he was experiencing, or did it feel artificial? Why?

3 Things You Should Know about 5000 Blankets , the Faith-Based Film about Homelessness

3 Things You Should Know about <em>5000 Blankets</em>, the Faith-Based Film about Homelessness

Cyndi is an optimistic, outgoing mom who only wants what is best for her husband, Bobby, and young son, Phillip. She organizes birthday parties. She makes sure they're in church. She tends to her son's needs at school.

On the surface, they're living a near-perfect life as a family in Fort Worth, Texas.

But all that changes when Bobby suffers a mental breakdown at a party and then at work. It makes him unable to communicate. It's as if -- she says -- there's a "darkness hanging over him."

The situation grows direr when Bobby hops in his vehicle and drives away without telling his family where he is going. He doesn't answer his phone. He doesn't respond to messages. Cyndi suspects he is living on the streets, homeless and seemingly hopeless.

Will he ever return?

The new faith -based movie 5000 Blankets (PG-13) follows the story of Cyndi, who initially fails in her attempt to find Bobby but is inspired to help Fort Worth's homeless community.

Here are three things you should know:

Cindy and Phillip in a park

1. It's Inspired by a True Story

5000 Blankets is based on the true story of Cyndi Bunch, whose husband, Phillip Sr., suffered a schizophrenic breakdown two decades ago and ran away to live on the streets. (Phillip Sr. had stopped taking his medication.) At the time, her son Phillip Pruitt was five years old.

"I didn't really know what was going on at the time because my mom was hiding a lot of it," he said .

Phillip's goal was to collect thousands of blankets for the homeless of Fort Worth, Texas. He even gave his mother his piggy bank.

Cyndi Bunch credits God for the idea.

"The good Lord was definitely looking down on me," she told Channel 5 in Dallas-Fort Worth .

Cindy and Phillip collecting blankets

2. It's about Faith, Hope and Love

The film tackles a tough subject, mental illness, with sensitivity and compassion. We watch as Cyndi's husband, Bobby (his movie name), suffers a mental breakdown at work. (Through images and sound, we experience what he experiences.) Moments later, he's standing on the building rooftop, apparently ready to jump to his death, when Cyndi calmly persuades him to walk to safety. Within minutes, though, he drives away in the family vehicle, perhaps never to be seen again.

"My husband is not well," she tells the police, who respond by saying they can do nothing because he "left on his own volition."

But Cyndi refuses to give up on her husband. She hangs "missing person" fliers around the city. She searches the streets. She interviews the homeless, asking if they've seen him. As she talks to Fort Worth's homeless – and as she listens to her son – she is inspired to collect blankets for the community.

The film includes plenty of faith-based moments. We see her at church. We watch as her pastor visits the home and encourages her to allow the congregation to assist the family's needs. (Because of her husband's absence, she is forced to sell their house and find a job outside the home.) Eventually, Cyndi stands before the congregation and gives her testimony, urging the body of Christ to help her collect the thousands of blankets that are needed.

The film is a lived-out example of what the Apostle Paul described in 1 Corinthians 13 : "Three things will last forever – faith, hope, and love – and the greatest of these is love." Cyndi had faith and hope in spite of her circumstances. She loved Bobby in spite of what he had done. She found purpose in the midst of a gut-wrenching tragedy.

The movie, brilliantly written, urges us to have compassion for Bobby, the homeless, and their families, all at the same time.

Phillip and his father fishing

3. It's about the Image of God in All of Us

5000 Blankets  soars in its depiction of the homeless. They're not problems to be brushed aside but, instead, image-bearers of God who need grace and mercy. Asked what his biggest challenge is in reaching the homeless, Phillip Jr. says it's "making people see what they usually try hard not to see."

We watch as Cyndi's character is transformed. During the film's opening scenes, she ignores a homeless man who knocks on her vehicle window, requesting money. (Phillip rolls his window down and hands him a dollar.) It's only when the issue is personalized that Cyndi changes her attitude. She takes a middle-aged homeless woman to a late-night diner. She invites two homeless men to a spaghetti fundraiser. She learns about their past, their life, and their dreams. She also learns more about their path to homelessness. (One homeless woman says she gave up on life after her husband died.)

Anna Camp ( The Help, Pitch Perfect ) and Carson Minniear ( Palmer ) are believable and outstanding in the lead roles.

The real-life Cyndi Bunch says she wants the movie to change viewers' perspective on homelessness.

"You don't know what's going on in people's lives," Bunch told Channel 5. "... They're people. They're human beings. I met so many beautiful spirits out there in those streets."

5000 Blankets is Rated PG-13 for thematic material involving mental illness. It contains no coarse language.

Entertainment rating : 4 out of 5 stars.

Family-friendly rating : 4 out of 5 stars.

Michael Foust has covered the intersection of faith and news for 20 years. His stories have appeared in Baptist Press ,  Christianity Today ,  The Christian Post , the   Leaf-Chronicle , the Toronto Star and the Knoxville News-Sentinel.

New movie '5,000 Blankets' tells Keller family's true story

By Kelsy Mittauer

December 12, 2022 / 2:14 PM CST / CBS Texas

KELLER, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) —   A Keller family is about to see their lives played out on the big screen. The movie "5,000 Blankets" opens in theaters on December 12. It's a Hollywood production sparked by a story first seen on CBS11.

We first met Cyndi Bunch and her son Phillip more than 15 years ago when they started a charity called Phillip's Wish. It began when Phillip's father developed schizophrenia and left his family to live on the streets of Fort Worth. Bunch says her son worried about how his father and the other homeless people would stay warm in the winter.

The mother-son duo started collecting blankets with a mission to help the men and women Phillip said most people didn't see. "They've taught me to be more of a generous person, not to just keep everything for yourself," Phillip told CBS11 in 2008.

Bunch says a screenwriter contacted her after seeing a CBS11 report. "And he says, 'Okay, how much do you want for your story?'" Bunch recalled. "I said, 'Oh, if you could just buy me $100 worth of blankets that would be cool!'"

After years of delays, the script was eventually picked up by Affirm Films, a Christian film studio owned by Sony.

Cyndi and Phillip, who is now 25, visited the set in Fayetteville, Arkansas where they consulted with the actors and watched the movie come to life.

Bunch says even after spending time getting to know actress Anna Camp, seeing the celebrity play her on the big screen was weird. "It was like, whoa! It was kind of funny. You see Anna, her face is everywhere and it's like... that's me!"

Bunch is hoping moviegoers will be inspired to do their own good deeds. "I hope they walk away with the feeling that these people are human and everybody struggles."

Phillip's Wish has expanded to include sleeping bags, coats, and a food pantry, all run by volunteers. You can find out more about their mission here .

The film "5,000 Blankets" hits theaters in limited release on December 12th and 13th.

What You Need To Know:

Miscellaneous Immorality: Nothing else objectionable.

More Detail:

5000 BLANKETS is a moving, inspiring drama about a woman who’s determined to find her husband when he has a mental breakdown and goes missing. 5000 BLANKETS is a well-written, well-acted, faith-filled Christian movie that talks about mental health and helping the homeless and less fortunate.

When Bobby and his son Phillip are out fishing, Cyndi is planning a surprise party for Bobby’s birthday. Once they arrive back home, they are greeted by Bobby’s friends. Toward the end of the night, however, Bobby undergoes some horrible emotional responses and lashes out at everyone. Everyone leaves the party, and not too long after, Bobby is at work and trying to focus. As Bobby focuses, he starts to have another episode and goes to the roof of the building to jump off. Cyndi is called, and she talks him off the ledge, but Bobby runs off and takes the truck.

Weeks pass, and Cyndi and her son, Phillip, haven’t seen Bobby. They are concerned and have contacted the authorities and put missing person signs up in their town.

One day, Cyndi’s called in to determine if a body is her husband’s. Happily, it’s not his body, but the man was wearing her husband’s coat. When she goes to the nearby homeless camp, she asks around who this man might be. A woman named Delia starts talking with her, and Cyndi takes her to dinner. They spark up an unlikely friendship and understanding of hardships. When Delia is walking away, Cyndi realizes she could use a blanket and gives Delia her son’s blanket in the car. She tells Phillip she’s given away the blanket, and he says they should give away blankets to those in need. The pair start collecting blankets, but when disaster strikes, and the cold storm is coming, they may not be able to give out the blankets.

5000 BLANKETS is a faith-filled Christian movie that is all about giving and loving on people. The movie talks about mental health and the homeless. Also, the movie talks about helping others when in need and relying on your church to help and support you. This is a great example of how Christians should help and minister to the homeless and needy. Though there are very few questionable elements in the movie, the themes may scare very young children and are geared more toward older audiences.

5000 BLANKETS is a well-made, entertaining movie. The movie is well written. It has a plot that keeps moving forward. Also, the acting is excellent and deals with topics and concepts that are difficult to portray.

Movie Review

Cyndi wasn’t the kind of person to give much notice to the homeless. No, she was the kind who would made sure the windows stay rolled up when they came by asking for money.

But when her husband, Bobby, has a mental breakdown, it causes him to take off to the streets. And while Cyndi’s out looking for him, she runs into Delia, a homeless woman. The two get to talking, and considering the chilly night, Cyndi gives Delia her son’s blanket. She’s afraid little Phillip might be upset, but as she’s tucking him into bed, he has other things on his mind.

“I wish we could give them all blankets,” Phillip says.

Phillip can’t stop thinking about how his father is now one of the thousands of homeless people who live in Fort Worth, Texas. Now, what was once stuck behind rolled up car windows hits a little closer to home. And with a cold winter soon approaching, Phillip wants to do something about it.

His zeal for the project is contagious. Soon, Cyndi begins helping him collect blankets to provide to homeless people. But it’ll take a lot of work and a lot of generosity in order to reach their goal of providing 5,000 blankets before Christmas.

Positive Elements

5000 Blankets details how the real-life non-profit organization Phillip’s Wish came to be. The organization still works to provide blankets, hats, scarves, gloves, sleeping bags and much more to people who are homeless.

5000 Blankets tells us that blankets aren’t going to solve everything, but that they can be the beginning of change.

“We are not naive,” Cyndi tells her church congregation. “We know that the problems these people face are immense. But we also know that a simple act of kindness can be a start.”

But as the film shows, it takes more than a motivational speech to rouse support. Some people have to overcome personal discomfort first. We see many instances in which people, Cyndi included, attempt to ignore homeless people. Others might just give a bit of spare change to soothe their consciences. But if we really want to help, we need to do more than treat others like an afterthought, the film suggests.

And while we’re reminded that there are some homeless people who can be dangerous, there are plenty of others who are there due to uncontrollable life circumstances, disabilities and mental health problems. Bobby, for example, is out on the street because of an uncontrollable mental breakdown, because of his sickness rather than his life choices. Another homeless man appears to be living on the streets because of a physical disability, and a homeless woman is in those circumstances because her husband passed away.

When Phillip attacks a bully at school, Cyndi tells her son that he still has to respond appropriately. “We didn’t ask for any of this,” Cyndi says, “but we get to choose how to react to it.”

Spiritual Elements

When Bobby vanishes, Cyndi expresses her frustration about her circumstances to her pastor.

“God wants you to do more than get by,” the pastor says.

“Then maybe He should have stopped my husband from coming apart at the seams,” Cyndi replies. The pastor tells Cyndi that the church is there to help her.

A church sermon references Saul on the road to Damascus. A homeless man says, “God bless you, son.” A woman sarcastically calls Cyndi a good Samaritan. People talk about prayer and reading the Bible. We also hear a reference to Easter and Jesus’ resurrection. Phillip tells his class that, despite a setback, “We have to put our trust in God.”

Sexual Content

A man tells a story of another person having to go “commando” when he cannot find extra underwear to use.

Violent Content

During a mental breakdown, Bobby attacks another man, throwing him to the ground and attempting to hit him. Bobby considers suicide while on the edge of a roof. He also cuts his hand accidentally, leaving a bloody scrape.

Phillip punches a boy for bullying him, resulting in the boy having a bloody nose. Cyndi is asked to identify a dead body thought to be her husband, and we see the corpse of a different homeless man. A storage unit catches fire.

Crude or Profane Language

We hear a use of “crap.”

Those listening very carefully during one scene may hear what sounds like an s-word in the background, but the film’s producers have told Plugged In that this word isn’t what’s being uttered.

Drug and Alcohol Content

We hear a reference to prescription medication.

Other Negative Elements

Boys verbally bully Phillip on a few occasions.

Scenes from Bobby’s perspective during his mental breakdowns may be intense for young children.

5000 Blankets tells the story of a young boy’s compassionate desire to provide warmth to the homeless. And for a little tug on your heartstrings, let us remind you that it’s based on a true story.

The nonprofit organization Phillip’s Wish , a faith-based group that provides clothing, toiletries and more to homeless people, began as a hopeful conversation between Phillip and his mother, Cyndi. The boy’s father had had a mental breakdown and was currently living out in the streets, and Phillip worried that he (and the many other homeless people) might be cold.

But Phillip didn’t just worry about this problem. Instead, he decided to do something simple and concrete, and his heart for the homeless compelled Cyndi to help him accomplish that goal, blanket by blanket.

This Christian movie’s PG-13 rating comes from its acute depictions of mental illness: Phillip’s father, Bobby, is often seen struggling through intense scenes. But aside from a little blood and a dead body shown in a police station, there’s little concerning content in this inspiring film. In fact, it might just be a compassionate catalyst for helping the homeless in your community, too.

5000 Blankets will be playing in select theaters on Dec. 12 and 13, distributed by Fathom Events .

5000 Blankets

Bobby Saunders is a young professional with friends and a wife, Cyndi, and son, Phillip, who love him. As he goes about his daily life, which includes being a believer and attending church, he begins to suffer from mental episodes where he’s angry and suicidal, leading to a life-or-death moment on top of a tall building. Driven mad, he suddenly disappears from his family’s life, vanishing into the streets of a big city. Fearful whether he’s dead or alive and not knowing how to help him, Cyndi and Phillip begin to comb the areas where the homeless gather for traces of the man they loved. In the process, they encounter some homeless people who confront their apathy toward their plight. Cyndi and Phillip’s hearts begin to turn toward them, and they ask what they can do to help the community. Soon, they begin a ministry delivering items to the homeless population, especially blankets for the cold nights, still searching for signs of Bobby.

Dove Review

The origin of the real-life ministry to the homeless, Phillip’s Wish, is explored in the new Pure Flix drama, 5000 Blankets . After Bobby Saunders suffers a debilitating mental illness, causing a suicide attempt, he disappears completely from his family’s life. His wife Cyndi and son Phillip are left devastated and begin a hopeful search to find him living among the homeless. They themselves also lose their home as past-due bills that Bobby had neglected force them to move in with Grandma.

Searching for Bobby, they encounter the humanity of the community members, who at first are either indifferent or downright hostile to them. Soon, however, they befriend them and seek to find out what they could do to help alleviate their suffering. Cyndi and Phillip begin collecting blankets and other household items, still hoping to be reunited with Bobby before they lose him completely. Cyndi and Phillip’s new ministry could literally have saved thousands of lives as the temperatures began dropping in the Fort Worth area during the winter.

5000 Blankets is well-rooted in Christian faith, with the family being regular members of a local church. Hymns and sermons give comfort and direction. After Bobby’s disappearance, Cyndi and Phillip are propped up by their fellow members and spiritual leaders. Their pastor also shows concern and helps them, even when Cyndi begins to start emotionally shutting down and doubts her faith.

“It doesn’t always make sense, the plan,” the pastor tells her. “Even hearing someone talk about the plan feels like the twisting of a knife. Nobody, least of all Him, wants to see you drift. So just keep your heart open, Cyndi. Listen, look. Be ready for the call when it comes.”

While working in their new homeless helping endeavor, the compassion of Christ compels them to minister to “the least of these” even amidst their own heartache. This gives them a renewed zeal and sense of purpose, but they also continue to deal with their personal problems – Cyndi trying to hold down a job for the first time in years and Phillip navigating the jungle of elementary school social dynamics. The ministry also is dealt several blows, including political red tape and a fire that destroys a storage unit full of blankets. Once again hit with despair and overwhelming doubt, it’s Phillip who steps forward to tell his mother, “We can’t give up.”

While there are moments of great intensity, including a rooftop scene where Bobby threatens to jump to his death in front of his wife and a friend, the film is a good discussion point for families who may be dealing with their own challenges, which could involve suicide or abandonment. What could someone do to make someone else’s burden just a little bit lighter? Can someone move past their own hurt to minister to the needs of others? If so, how would that help heal their own hurts?

5000 Blankets and the story of Phillip’s Wish is an uplifting and hopeful film about ministering through brokenness and being sensitive to the needs of others. It’s an impactful story with great performances that will draw viewers to its transformational message.

Dove Rating Details

The Saunders family is well-rooted in Christian faith and lean on God during their toughest times. They pray, attend church, and receive help from their fellow members and pastor.

Cyndi and Phillip are great examples of being servants and moving beyond their own issues to see those who are hurting in the world. The film takes viewers on a journey of them warming their hearts to the members of the homeless community.

There was none.

One instance of the by-word “freaking” and words like “darn.”

The attempted suicide scene is perilous and intense. No one is ultimately hurt but suicide is a frequent theme. Cyndi is also called to the morgue to identify what she is afraid is Bobby’s corpse. Phillip is teased at school about his father and engages in a fistfight with the bully.

Review by Wallywood ★★½

The true story behind this film is rather sad and seeing the photo of the mother and son who inspired the film in the end credits made me feel for their journey. The film itself was okay, it's PG rating made it hard to express what was going on with the runaway father and those scenes were the weakest moments for the film. Generally Anna Camp and young Carson Minniear were both fine leads. This had too many complex themes that clashed with the films attempt to be feel good.

Review by Richard Propes ★★★★

Young Carson Minniear is having quite the cinematic year. A relative newcomer, Minniear's first big breakout was in a supporting role in the Justin Timberlake-led family drama Palmer. 5,000 Blankets is the second time I've caught Minniear this year after his inspirational Rally Caps kicked off its festival journey in my hometown Heartland International Film Festival earlier this year and picked up the fest's Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature.

With 5,000 Blankets, set for a special two-day Fathom Event screening on December 12th and 13th, Minniear solidifies his status as an up-and-coming young actor with his role as Phillip Saunders, the son of Cyndi (Anna Camp) and Bobby (Rob Mayes). They're a seemingly idyllic family, though it's evident from…

We know they want 5000 blankets, and at a certain point, they’re worried they won’t get enough blankets. Then at the end, they’re happy, but we never see them count the blankets. I want to know how exactly how many blankets they got, goddammit.

If it was more heavy handed it's arms would fall off.

That being said this one really challenged how I watch movies. I was with a large group of people, all of whom were part of a residential recovery program. Getting to sit and watch this movie, as over the top inspirational and tacky as it is, brought enormous amounts of joy to a room full of grown men. Maybe I am too cynical, looking for faults and flaws when sometimes it's best to just enjoy what is in front of me. Two stars plus some meta food for thought.

(Short Review)

I’ll be honest, I had no desire to see this. But my mom wanted to, see we got to see one of their limited showings with Fathom Events . We both walked out with the same reaction: it felt like a lifetime movie. To be fair, I wasn’t cringing the whole time while watching it. It’s the last offensive Faith Based film I’ve seen (by that I mean there’s nothing really controversial I could find in it). The film does attempt to address some problems with the rise of homelessness and is aware bringing blankets to them won’t solve everything. Its cinematography was sometimes actually really good, at least from a color grading standpoint. In truth though, everything still…

My 5000 Blankets Movie Review

5000 Blankets movie reminds us that we can all be the change we want to see in this world. Be sure to learn more about this movie here. #5000BlanketsMIN #MomentumInfluencerNetwork #sharinglifesmoments #moviereview

I was NOT disappointed in watching the 5000 Blankets movie. It was all I hoped for! It was a family-friendly movie that inspires its viewers to see how they can be the change they hope to see in this world.

This movie made me really think about how blessed I truly am in life. I also suffer from mental illnesses, but I haven’t had to take medication for it for years now. But I do know and remember all too well what it’s like to be living in a dark crazy foggy state of mind. While the main character, Bobby, has another kind of mental illness than I have it’s still a topic that hit home for me.

So many people take for granted all that they have, and they forget that it doesn’t take much for you to lose all the materialistic items you own in life. All too easily we could become one of these homeless people on the streets.

Ironically God reminded me today during my Bible reading session , about how we are to treat everyone EQUALLY!!

For if someone comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and dressed in fine clothes, and a poor person dressed in filthy cloes also comes in, if you look with favor on the one wearing the fine clothes, and say, “Sit here in a good place,” and yet you say to the poor person, “Stand over there,” or “Sit here on the floor by my footstool,” have you made distinctions among yourseves and become judges with evil thoughts? James 2: 2-4

This movie was about a woman who never lost her faith in both God AND her husband. She also saw how beautifully God can work miracles all around her if she allows him to guide her.

I fear if I say too much more about this movie itself, I will give too much away. However, I highly recommend this one.

Thank you for stopping by and commenting. I hope to see you again soon.

I haven’t heard of this movie before. Sounds good. I definitely don’t watch as many movies as I used to. I am always watched my favourite series or women’s football. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Women’s football? I’ve never heard of that. Is that a women’s soccer team in the US?

MOVIE REVIEW: WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES A BLANKET MAKE?

5000 blankets movie reviews

With chaos on the rise in our society, it’s a blessing to hear about people willing to sacrifice their time, energy, and resources to help others. “ 5,000 Blankets ” tells the story of a woman and her son who did just that.

From the website:

“Inspired by a remarkable true story, ‘5000 BLANKETS’ is filled with hope and highlights the power of family and faith. When her husband has a mental breakdown and goes missing, a woman and her young son set out to find him on the streets, sparking a movement of compassion towards those in need and inspiring a city.”

The Humanity of the Homeless

At least two characters in the story bring the humanity of the homeless into focus.

It’s easy to dismiss a generic need, but when you give that need the face of a man or a woman who has fallen on hard times and lost hope … it can change your perspective.

It can move us from stereotyping, categorizing, and subsequently dismissing … to becoming engaged, curious, and wanting to help in the ways that we are able.

What difference does it make?

You’ve probably heard the classic story of the boy and the starfish. If you haven’t, here’s the basic plot….

5000 blankets movie reviews

A boy walks along a beach littered with dying starfish. Something is causing the little creatures to wash up on the shore.

There are piles of them everywhere, dying, and their stench is stifling.

A man sees the little boy gingerly picking up and tossing one after another back into the water.

The man watches for a time and notes that—despite the boy’s persistent efforts to save them—the number of starfish collecting on the beach continues to increase.

He calls out to the boy, “Young man, it’s useless. I know you’re trying, but you’ll never make a difference.”

The boy tosses another starfish back into the water before responding, then says, “Excuse me, sir, but I just made a difference to that starfish.”

Without giving away too many details of “5,000 Blankets,” let’s just say that a blanket will not change everything in a person’s life—but when the winter winds begin to blow, it can surely make a difference to the person who receives it.

Small Sacrifice, Big Impact

When we see enormous issues, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. But don’t let the immensity of the problem drive you away. Take one small step toward a solution.

You can help one homeless person with one small step.

Create a care package, and tuck it in the backseat of your car. Load it with practical, imperishable items like:

  • A bar of soap
  • A toothbrush
  • A tube of toothpaste
  • A pair of gloves
  • A bag of dried fruit
  • A granola bar

Not A Private Matter

The story told in “5,000 Blankets” helps us understand how mental illness can send a devastating ripple through an entire family.

Thankfully, although we may not get to decide what trials we face in life—we retain the right to decide how we will respond to them.

The movie walks us through one healthy, loving response.

A Pet Peeve Pitfall Avoided

I’ve often lamented the fact that most so-called “family-friendly” movies are missing an essential element. This absence is subtle, yet powerful … and extremely dangerous: they present a Godless world.

The Central Character of Creation, the One in Whom we live and move and have our being, is completely absent from the script!

Thankfully, this movie—albeit imperfectly—has that void filled.

Overcomers At Work

With all the battles raging in the culture and in the world, it’s a luxury to step into a story that displays kindness triumphing over despair.

It may have a limited budget, but “ 5,000 Blankets ” displays a transformation that is priceless.

Get the popcorn ready….

I have been homeless due to domestic violence, so I could understand the need for a good blanket. One of the most cherished things my children and I received during that time was a homemade blanket and crocheted booties. There was something about this act of kindness that gave us hope, and we were able to face an uncertain future. The blanket was like “home”. This is why I loved that they gave blankets to the needy in this movie!

How have you reacted when faced with the impossible? I loved that this movie addresses how life can be overwhelming sometimes, but when we turn our focus to God, He not only transforms our hearts and minds, but can use us to help others. Even when we are struggling ourselves!
