Admission to a doctoral programme

You want to apply for a doctoral programme at the University of Vienna? Here you will find information about the procedure and the most important steps to prepare for a successful application.

The prerequisite for a PhD programme is a  subject-related diploma or master's degree or another subject-related degree of at least the same level of higher education , issued at a recognized domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institution.

You can submit your application for admission online throughout the year (with the exception of PhD programmes in economics). Once you have submitted your application, it will be reviewed by the director of the doctoral programme at the relevant faculty. After 3 - 6 weeks you will be informed by email whether you have been accepted into the PhD programme.

After that you can enrol as a PhD candidate (by paying the ÖH fee or the tuition fee ) and start your PhD and you have access to all services of the University of Vienna (courses, library, IT services, etc.).

Important steps for a successful admission

  • Choice of topic: For the admission, you must already have a clear idea of your topic. You must submit a short description of a maximum of 4 pages (plus references) of the planned dissertation project, its questions and objectives, as well as the current state of research on which the dissertation project is based..
  • Commitment of supervision: Supervision by a qualified scientist is an important factor for a successful doctorate. Therefore, admission to a doctoral programme is only possible if you have the confirmation of a supervisor at the University of Vienna that he/she will supervise you. This confirmation must be submitted with your application (via form ). Therefore, find out in good time which researchers at the University of Vienna are conducting research on your topic and whether cooperation is possible within the framework of a dissertation project. We recommend that you visit the website of the faculty or doctoral school where you would like to do your doctorate and contact the professors you would like to work with directly.
  • Letter of motivation and CV Letter of motivation and CV are part of your application for admission. In the letter of motivation you should briefly and concisely (max. 1 page) present your research interests and your motivation for the planned research project and explain why you want to carry it out at the University of Vienna. The CV should present your academic and professional career in a compact and clear way (max. 3 pages), including relevant professional experience, language skills, abilities and competences as well as previous academic achievements (such as publications, awards, conferences, etc.).
  • Degree certificates and (optional) language certificates For the application for admission, you must submit your Bachelor's and Master's degree certificates and transcripts with the required legalisation for the country of issue . For admission to doctoral studies, German and/or English language skills at level C1 are generally required. Whether you need to submit a language certificate with your application depends on the doctoral programme you are applying for. You can find more information on the admission pages of the respective doctoral programmes .
  • Apply via u:space Create a u:account and register for the doctoral programme of your choice via u:space . Upload all the required documents and click on "Submit application" at the end. Only then can your application be processed and forwarded to the head of the doctoral programme for approval.

Are you in search of an inspiring research environment? Are you looking to improve your scientific and analytical skills to prepare you for a career in social research or academics? The PhD programme at the Vienna School of International Studies might just be what you are looking for! The four-year doctoral programme ‘Interdisciplinary International Studies’ (IIS) is organised in cooperation with the University of Vienna open to graduates who wish to pursue a research project linking at least two of the four disciplines legal studies, political science, international economics and history.

Throughout the programme, doctoral candidates are guided by internationally acclaimed scholars from all over the world, who are dedicated to support our students' academic journeys exploring scientific skills, data collection and analysis as well as academic publications among others.

In addition to that, IIS students have the opportunity to participate in the academic life at the DA through teaching activities, research assistantships and more. The small but vibrant research community at the DA provides PhD students with opportunities to connect with peers in advanced academic positions.

The doctoral programme is built on three modules: Module 1 at the Vienna School of International Studies (“DA”), Module 2 at the University of Vienna (UW) and Module 3 “Disssertation”.

  • For Module 1 (DA), doctoral students are required to complete coursework and sit field examinations in both disciplines. Coursework includes research seminars, workshops, courses relevant for their research topic and extensive reading courses focussing on their research disciplines.
  • For Module 2 (UW), students are required to develop their research project. To complete this module students are expected to hold a colloquium (“faculty public presentation”) to discuss their dissertation prospectus with the dissertation committee to gain approval for the project.
  • Module 3 focuses on research and writing of the doctoral thesis. The primary purpose of PhD study is the preparation and presentation of a substantial piece of original research in the form of a thesis.

Charlott Gebauer (© DA/Peter Lechner)

"There really is no other place like the Diplomatische Akademie Wien; not only is the level of commitment by the students incredible, the academic possibilities are also endless. My favourite part of pursuing my PhD at the DA are my weekly meetings with my supervisor, Professor Patrick Müller, where we not only discuss my project in depth, but all stages and processes related to my PhD. This highlights the level of dedication of my incredible supervisor at the DA. I could not imagine a better place to pursue my PhD!"

Colin Hendrickx (© DA/Peter Lechner)

"During the first year of the doctoral programme, classes at both the Vienna School of International Studies and the University of Vienna helped me to broaden and deepen my knowledge of international relations and African studies, and to get to know my fellow students. Furthermore, I was in close contact with my supervisors, who greatly helped me to refine my proposal."

Focus of the Ph.D. programs

Our research focuses on five core areas: Immunology, Cancer research and Oncology, Neuroscience, Cardiovascular medicine, and Medical imaging. We place great emphasis on interdisciplinary research. For us, it’s natural that medical scientists work together with researchers from other disciplines such as physics, chemistry, or mathematics to find joint solutions in research projects. Our doctoral studies are bundled in thematic programmes and offer a wide selection of interdisciplinary research projects to choose from. Our researchers and research groups are as diverse as our research, and this makes our work extremely exciting.

Educational objectives

Our Ph.D. programs aim to provide you with all the skills and knowledge you need to be an excellent scientist and science leader. During your Ph.D., you should decide whether you’d like to work in the academic or non-academic sector in the future and adapt your training accordingly. We’ll accompany you as you take your first steps as a young researcher and support you with the development of your independent project. The Ph.D. course is practice-oriented, as you’ll gain most of your academic skills and knowledge as part of a team. After successfully completing your training, you’ll be able to exhibit the following:

  • A systemic understanding of a study field and proficiency in the skills and methods associated with this field.
  • The ability to plan, design, implement and adapt a research project with scientific integrity.
  • Original research output that increases the limits of knowledge and substantial research work.
  • The ability to make your research output available to the scientific society according to national and international publication standards.
  • The ability to perform critical analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of new and complex ideas.
  • The ability to communicate with the professional environment, the scientific community, and society about basic questions of science and scientific politics.
  • The ability to promote technological, social, and cultural progress within an academic and professional context in a knowledge society.

Workflow of the Ph.D. programs

Doctoral study takes at least six semesters and comprises 180 ECTS. All courses comprise a total of 30 hours each semester, which corresponds to 16.7% of the total duration of the course (based on a standard 40-hour work week). The remaining time (83.3%) is available for developing a project for your doctoral thesis.

The Ph.D. program will provide you with comprehensive scientific training in your chosen research area and general scientific skills to prepare you for various academic, medical, industrial, and public scientific careers. The learning occurs through practical training at the workplace, courses, including lectures, seminars, journal clubs, propaedeutics, ASIC courses, thesis seminars, or study periods abroad. You work with your supervisor and the rest of the research team the entire time.

Towards the end of your studies, you will work on an independent research project that will be documented in a doctoral thesis and defended publicly. We’ve put together detailed information on the curriculum, including a study plan proposal,  here  for your consideration.

Career outlook

Completion of a Ph.D. program gives you the opportunity to work in a wide variety of areas, including:

  • Medical research
  • Project management
  • Science journalism
  • Professorship and teaching
  • Consultation to public administration, NGOs and industry
  • Marketing and Sales

GSPP grad Juliana Davis is pursuing criminal justice reform in her own way and on her own timeline.

Juliana Davis poses for a photo

Juliana Davis resonates with Billy Joel’s song “Vienna.”

It’s a metaphor for growing older, with lyrics like “Slow down, you're doing fine, you can't be everything you want to be before your time.” The song also highlights the need to take the time to smell the roses—something Davis, a self-described Type A personality, has learned throughout her life and especially as a graduate student at the University of Denver.

“Your goal will be there when you get to it. It’s going to wait for you, so take your time and get there—there’s no rush,” she says. “You're not on anybody else's timeline other than your own.”

Davis will graduate this spring with a master’s degree in forensic psychology from the Graduate School of Professional Psychology . Her path was not always entirely clear—and she faced tremendous challenges along the way—but just weeks before graduation, she is where she wants to be, thanks to both the opportunities provided and the connections made in Denver.

Davis has long known she’s wanted to be a part of criminal justice reform, but she wasn’t sure what that would look like—until now.

She had thought about becoming a lawyer but instead earned an undergraduate degree in behavioral neuroscience from Saint Mary’s College of California and was on the path to becoming a psychiatrist. It was then that Davis realized what she wanted most was to come home to Colorado.

Originally from Aurora, Davis decided to attend DU and begin her MA in forensic psychology in 2022. During her time in the program, Davis started working with a Denver nonprofit called the  Youth Empowerment Agency in their school-based behavioral health program.

Davis credits professor Kim Gorgens for connecting her with the organization, which she learned about when she met a member of the Denver Justice Project in one of Gorgens’ classes.

Currently serving schools in Adams County, Davis works to provide an alternative to standard disciplinary action for students with behavior issues.

For example, when a student is sent out of class or to in-school suspension for a disciplinary reason, they meet with Davis or one of her colleagues, who tries to better understand what factors may be impacting that student’s behavior.

Juliana Davis poses for a photo

Davis plans to work with the program on a full-time basis after graduation and hopes to expand it to other parts of the state, including Aurora Public Schools—a district she knows well.

“If it goes well, this is something that I do think must be implemented in schools across the nation,” she says.

Davis also had the chance to be a part of collaborative research that sent her and some of her classmates to Los Angeles to present at the annual conference of the American Psychology-Law Society in Los Angeles. They presented on the experience of pregnancy and postpartum during incarceration.

“The research, the people, the connections that I’ve made while being here is most definitely what’s giving me the drive to go out and find all of these cool things,” Davis says.

Throughout it all, she has tried to remind herself to not sweat the small stuff, enjoy the little moments and celebrate the successes, even during the greatest of challenges.

This was never more important than just before the end of her first year in the program, when Davis was the victim of a random act of gun violence. After taking some time away from DU to recover, Davis was determined to graduate on time with her cohort. She thanks program director and professor Lynett Henderson Metzger for the “crucial” work she did to help make sure she reached every requirement to get it done.

Neil Gowensmith, a professor and Davis’ academic advisor, described her as an “extraordinary student, leader and changemaker during her time at DU.”

“Juliana has experienced life-changing challenges during her time in our graduate program. Her response has been nothing short of unbelievable,” Gowensmith says. “She has maintained exemplary professionalism throughout, while never sacrificing her goals or the quality of her work. Our faculty could not be more impressed with Juliana as a person and as an early career professional.”

The program’s clinical curriculum includes three elective rotations offering a variety of educational opportunities. Pathway tracks allow students to focus experiences to a single specialty. Remote electives facilitate knowledge of telemedicine and PA practice outside of the clinic. Varied electives strengthen knowledge deficiencies and allow for specialty exploration.

Medical Spanish

According to US Census data (2015), over 25% of Californians speak Spanish and nearly half of the spanish-speaking population speak little to no English. Education in medical spanish meets a need in our communities. Medical Spanish is a required curriculum component integrated into the clinical skills course series.
