Qualitative Researcher Job Description Template

We are looking for a reflexive and collaborative qualitative researcher to spearhead relevant research activities. The qualitative researcher will be required to propose meaningful project ideas, source adequate human and financial capital, and secure entry into spaces by forging respectful relationships. Upon being granted requisite permissions, you should proceed to learn about appropriate phenomena.

To be successful as a qualitative researcher, you should be cognizant of evolving power dynamics throughout the investigation. Invariably, an exceptional qualitative researcher will seek to leave research sites intact or improved, depending on participants' wishes.

Qualitative Research Assistant

Qualitative Research Assistant: VA Center for Clinical Management Research

The Center for Clinical Management Research at the Veterans Affairs Ann Arbor Healthcare System is seeking to fill a Qualitative Research Assistant position to support two VA funded studies on patient access to specialty care and organ transplant evaluation led by Dr. Megan A. Adams.

Primary Responsibilities: The candidate will assist with recruitment, scheduling, and data management for virtual interviews with leadership, providers, and Veteran-patients. They will also conduct semistructured interviews of Veteran-patients, be the second interviewer/note-taker on interview with healthcare providers and health system leadership as well as work with qualitative analysts to organize and analyze interview data. The position will require use of health and medical information and obtaining informed consent from potential participants. Desired Skills: Experience with recruitment, data management and conducting research interviews. Experience with and/or interest in healthcare delivery and learning from both Veteran-patients and healthcare providers. Must be a self-starter, able to work independently, be detail-oriented and meticulous, have excellent organizational skills and able to work on multiple projects simultaneously. Applicants must be comfortable (and hopefully enjoy) regularly communicating with patients and providers both over the phone and via video conference.

Qualifications: Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree with 3+ years’ experience is required; Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology, Public Health, or Social Work preferred. Experience with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint is required; experience with NVivo a plus. U.S. Citizenship Required.

Position: Qualitative Research Assistant, Center for Clinical Management Research, Health Services Research, VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Full-time, $54,000 - $66,000 starting salary commensurate with degree and experience. Full benefits included with medical, paid sick leave, vacation/personal leave and eleven paid holidays per year plus pension and retirement plans.

The typical schedule is Monday - Friday, 8-hour shifts. Work will be conducted in office and remotely via telework (if desired). Start date: April-May 2024

Conduct literature reviews

Collect and analyze data

Prepare materials for submission to granting agencies and foundations

Prepare interview questions

Recruit and/or interview subjects

Maintain accurate records of interviews, safeguarding the confidentiality of subjects, as necessary

Summarize interviews

Provide ready access to all experimental data for the faculty researcher and/or supervisor

Request or acquire equipment or supplies necessary for the project

Manage and respond to project related email

Prepare, maintain and update website materials

Supervise undergraduate students working on the research project (maintaining records on assignment completion, acting as liaison/mediator between the undergraduate students and the faculty researcher)

Attend project meetings

Attend area seminars and other meetings as necessary

Summarize project results

Prepare progress reports

Prepare other articles, reports and presentations

Monitor the project budget

Travel to field sites to collect and record data and/or samples as appropriate to the specific objectives of the study

As appropriate to the specified position, code and verify data in accordance with specified research protocol and coding procedures and enter data into a computer database and/or spreadsheet application for subsequent analysis

Develop or assist in the development of interview schedules; contact potential subjects to introduce and explain study objectives and protocol and to arrange interviews, either in person or by telephone

Identify and compile lists of potential research subjects in accordance with study objectives and parameters, as appropriate to the individual position

Conduct and record face-to-face and/or telephone interviews with subjects, in accordance with predetermined interview protocol, data collection procedures and documentation standards

Review and edit data to ensure completeness and accuracy of information; follow up with subjects to resolve problems or clarify data collected

May set up, calibrate and maintain laboratory and/or field research equipment, as specified by the requirements of the study

May lead or guide the work of student employees

Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

Prepare findings for publication and assist in laboratory analysis, quality control, or data management

Write and contribute to publications

Develop research protocols

Track progress over time

Assist with preparation of all educational and training workshops and evaluation strategies

Engage clinical and community partners in research

The Role of Research Assistants in Qualitative and Cross-Cultural Social Science Research

Cross-cultural research frequently involves working with research assistants to conduct data collection activities. Due to the range of different functions that research assistants end up fulfilling, from translator to guide to gatekeeper, it is clear that their participation in the research project has implications for the quality of the study design, its process and outcomes. However, their role is not always explored. Drawing on our own research as well as that of others, this chapter discusses a set of key practical decisions researchers need to make when planning their fieldwork – from assessing whether a research assistant is needed to managing a work relation. We show how these practical considerations are intertwined with the power asymmetries rooted in the employment relation between researcher and research assistant. We also explore how the triangular power dynamics between research participants, research assistants, and researchers influence the research process and outcomes, as well as how these power dynamics reflect the broader institutional research landscape, in which questions of power, ownership, and extraction are prominent. Researchers need to reflect, discuss, and write more on this topic to fulfil a crucial gap in the literature on research methodology, to provide practical guidance for future researchers, and to identify the basis for fairer collaborations between North and South research institutions.

What You’ll Bring:

The John Gardner Center in the Graduate School of Education seeks a Qualitative Research Associate to be responsible for conducting qualitative research with an emphasis on policy-relevant and actionable topic areas. The Researcher will lead and contribute to qualitative research: they will assist community partners in formulating research questions and conducting community driven studies resulting in policy briefs and other products focused on topics related to youth development and education. The candidate will also lead and contribute to qualitative research projects, conducting formative assessments of community-based programs, including data collection, coding, analysis and writing reports and briefs. For all research and analyses, the incumbent will present research findings to community partners and other stakeholders on a regular basis. They will supervise graduate level research assistants and potentially some staff; work collaboratively with other Gardner Center staff; and report to the Executive Director.

What You’ll Do:

Work in partnership with community entities to design and conduct policy-relevant research related to youth development in a community setting:

  • Collaborate with Gardner Center staff and community partners to identify key research needs in the community and design and carry out research that responds to these. 
  • Design research projects that respond to community questions and needs using a variety of tools, including the JGC’s Youth Data Archive); youth and adult surveys; secondary data analysis; and qualitative data collection and analyses.
  • Conduct primary research and produce written products and presentations that are appropriate for community audiences and parallel materials that inform academic debates and audiences.

Conduct Qualitative Research and Other Analyses:

  • Design studies in conjunction with the community and other partners. 
  • Collect data using a variety of qualitative methods (interviews, focus groups, observations).
  • Contribute to data cleaning, verification and documentation.
  • Contribute to discussions about coding and analysis schemes.  Code data and conduct analyses.

Write, Present and Otherwise Communicate Research Findings to a Wide Range of Stakeholders and Entities:

  • Write reports and briefs of findings for partners and broader academic field.
  • Write and present academic articles, issue briefs, summaries, conference paper and other products to a variety of audiences.
  • Meet with partners on an ongoing basis to review and evolve analyses.
  • Work with Gardner Center Communications team on additional communications opportunities for analyses, including newspaper articles, blogs, panel discussions and more.

Participate actively as a collaborative member of the Gardner Center team, and connect the Gardner Center to the greater Stanford community and the broader research field:

  • Attend regular staff meetings and retreats.
  • Supervise graduate students and junior staff on specific projects.
  • Where appropriate, contribute to grant development and report writing.
  • Assist the Center in developing processes, tools, and products to enhance the future direction of the Center.

To be successful in this position, you will bring :

  • Advanced degree and five years of relevant experience in area of specialization or combination of relevant education, training, and/or experience. For jobs with financial responsibilities, experience managing a budget and developing financial plans. Experience developing program partnerships and funding sources.
  • Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources.
  • Advanced oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
  • Ability to oversee and direct staff.
  • Ability to manage budgets and develop financial plans.

Education and Experience Preferred:   A doctorate (or equivalent) in a relevant field (education, public policy, sociology, anthropology, psychology, or related field) is required as is capacity to oversee graduate students as they design, carry out, and write about their research projects. 

Experience with qualitative data collection and analysis is required.  Demonstrated experience with designing qualitative studies is required, as is proficiency with data analysis software such as NVIVO. Excellent oral, analytic, organizational, and interpersonal skills are required; writing as demonstrated in the candidate’s own writing and publications is essential.  Ability to write for multiple audiences, including policy makers and practitioners, is preferred. The candidate must have strong interpersonal and collaboration skills in working with researchers and practitioners as well as organizational skills that demonstrate their ability to handle multiple tasks, timelines and priorities in a team environment.  Familiarity with California K-12 education context, and English language learners is preferred.  This may be substituted with familiarity with juvenile justice, mental health or foster care systems or a related youth policy issue. Familiarity with school enrichment and youth development programs, such as after-school programs is a plus.

The expected pay range for this position is $113,000 to $120,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.

Job description.

We would like to appoint a Research Assistant to help us in the final stages of three separate qualitative studies focusing on treatment for substance use disorder. The person appointed with be based in the Addictions Department at King’s College London (KCL) and will report to Jo Neale (Professor of Addictions Qualitative Research).

The role will involve close working with other team members, including quantitative researchers, people with living and lived experience of opioid use disorder, and clinicians. Data collection for all three studies is now complete and analyses and write up are underway with some journal articles already published. We would like to increase the volume and speed of our writing over the next 12 months, so are looking to appoint someone to assist with literature reviewing, coding of qualitative data, qualitative data analyses, and dissemination. This will include helping with the preparation of manuscripts for publication and writing plain language summaries as well as other research-related administrative tasks. The Addictions Department at King’s College is a leading European research centre for addiction research and represents a network of clinicians, researchers and clinical teachers who have a shared commitment to excellence in prevention and treatment work, and to supporting and strengthening national and international endeavours in this field. Over the last 30 years, the Department has developed a body of research evidence that has informed the development of new treatment services for alcohol, smoking, and drug problems in the UK.

The successful candidate will be based in our offices in London, but some remote working will also be possible.

This post will be offered on a full-time, fixed term contract for 12 months.
