High quality supervision

Research supervision is a demanding and complex role.

To ensure that you receive the highest standards of supervisory support, we have invested significantly in the development of a sector-leading supervisor training programme.

Our academic colleagues complete this programme before supervising a research student and refresh their knowledge and skills every three years.

We also have a Supervisor Network that supports and develops best practice and offers opportunities for supervisors to meet and discuss topics. We are also actively contributing to the new national supervisor accreditation scheme, which we are piloting with our supervisors as early adopters of  The Research Supervision Recognition Programme .

Creative coach

Research students working in STEM subjects can request a creative coach as part of their supervisory team who can advise on impact, public engagement and ways of thinking differently about the research project.

The Doctoral School has a Steering Group, run by and for our postgraduate research community, who focus on wellbeing and a healthy work/life balance. The Doctoral School organises social events, days out, craft sessions and networking lunches.

INTRODUCTION

Professional Doctorates are linked intrinsically to your workplace. The DProf provides an excellent framework in which to develop a credible research proposal based on issues identified in a clinical or health-related environment. This course has been developed in collaboration with in-service professionals along the key themes of education for:

  • Personal strategies for practice development
  • Creative decision-making and risk-taking
  • Developing presence, influence and political know-how
  • Evidence-based practice and research

You will have two supervisors to support your research. We have experts across many disciplines, for example nursing, counselling, social care, public health, occupational therapy, radiography, physiotherapy to supervise your own area of expert knowledge. Developing personal support is one of the most important values informing the DProf programme. You might be a mature student having spent lengthy periods in the workplace; confidence around writing support is built into the programme.

  • Broaden and deepen your understanding of your research topic
  • Achieve work-based observation and evidence to credible robust findings
  • Be provided with a supportive and excellent framework in which to develop issues identified in a clinical or health related environment.
  • Develop skills that are transferable to the real world

ALL ABOUT THE COURSE

Professional Doctorates are as rigorous as traditional PhDs but are different in focus. A traditional PhD subject can be relatively fixed in terms of what is researched. A Professional Doctorate is more variable and adaptable to change due to developments in your profession. This is because the Professional Doctorate is linked intrinsically to your workplace.

Although the Professional Doctorate programme is housed within the School of Health and Society, we have supervisors from across the University. We have experts in a range of disciplines including child psychology, social care, public health, occupational therapy, radiography, physiotherapy to supervise your own area of expert knowledge.

Samford University's Physician Assistant Studies Department Receives Full Accreditation

Email Share Icon

Samford University's Physician Assistant (PA) Studies department has achieved full accreditation from the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). This status, formally designated as Accreditation-Continued, signifies the culmination of years of dedication, hard work and adherence to the highest standards in medical education.

After undergoing intense evaluation and assessment, the PA program has met the stringent criteria set forth by ARC-PA, ensuring that it delivers top-quality education to its students. Driven by a commitment to excellence, the faculty, staff and students of the program have demonstrated their dedication to meeting the requirements.

“We have always believed that we have a special PA program, but it is encouraging to be formally recognized by ARC-PA.” said Alan Jung, dean and professor of the School of Health Professions.

The journey towards full accreditation began with the program operating under provisional status, a standard designation for new programs. Since 2018, the department has undergone multiple site visits to ensure compliance with accreditation standards. The most recent site visit in August 2023 marked the culmination of this process, resulting in full accreditation.

This achievement now places Samford’s PA program on a 10-year accreditation cycle while maintaining regular evaluation and assessment. This recognition from ARC-PA highlights the program's readiness to produce competent and compassionate healthcare providers who meet the demands of modern healthcare.

Assistant professor Heather Hallman expressed excitement about the achievement, highlighting its significance for students and the broader community. "Attaining full accreditation is no small task," she said. "It reflects our unwavering commitment to preparing competent and compassionate healthcare providers."

The accreditation not only serves as a badge of honor for the program but also instills confidence in students, alumni and the communities served by Samford. With a 97% board passage rate over the last two years, the program's graduates have demonstrated exceptional success, further solidifying the program's reputation for excellence.

Hallman emphasized that achieving full accreditation provides students with assurance and peace of mind. "Our students can now rest easy knowing that they are attending a fully accredited program," she said.

Looking ahead, Samford’s PA program remains committed to fostering excellence in healthcare education. The achievement of full accreditation is not just a milestone but a testament to the dedication of students, faculty and staff. It shows that graduates of the program are well-prepared to navigate the complexities of the health care landscape and deliver patient-centered care of the highest possibility.
