Exemplary Dissertations in Education Research

  • Award Winning Dissertations
  • Dissertation Awards, Grants, and Funding
  • Accessing Dissertations

Why Exemplary?

"Had we been charged with identifying the 'most outstanding' dissertation, I think we would have had a more difficult time reaching consensus. The emphasis on 'exemplary'  was deliberate; while there could easily be differences of opinion about which dissertation is the 'best,' I think there could be little disputing the judgment that all five of the award-winning selections are exemplary, and can serve as models of high-quality research within their disciplines for others to follow. By identifying exemplary dissertations, the Spencer Foundation hopes to elevate the quality of dissertation research and writing that will be pursued in the future."

How to choose a Dissertation Topic in Education?

If you are confused about choosing a topic for your dissertation, here are some simple methods that might simplify what you can put your focus on while writing your dissertation.

Choose a Relevant Topic

It is extremely important to select a relevant topic for the dissertation as it contributes to your future. To obtain a masters degree in education, you need to find interesting topics for a dissertation. The topic must hold your interest and include the potential to provide you with a significant amount of content.

Don’t Be Vague

A dissertation is supposed to be a lengthy piece of research work. So the dissertation must be broad enough to explore the topic. It must follow a clear structure to contribute to the argumentation you are going to include in the dissertation.

Research Questions

Do not select narrow questions which are supposed to be answered with a Yes or No. Choose questions that provide you with relevant answers such as

  • Can parent’s expectations affect a student’s life?
  • Does giving students homework really contribute to their academic improvement?

Ask for advice

Students who are writing a dissertation are always provided with guidance. Teachers or supervisors are assigned to guide students throughout the duration of the dissertation. So remember to ask for feedback or a piece of advice. Your supervisor will have years of academic experience, so their recommendation will only add to your research.

Before choosing a topic, make sure you research thoroughly about the chosen topic. Be aware of the content provided by the topic. You may not get enough information to complete the dissertation, so make sure you find and get enough sources to expand and support your arguments.

What is the impact of the Coronavirus epidemic on education?

Coronavirus has served as a sharp reminder of how human schools are. Students have embraced online learning but are eager to return to her classroom. I don’t think it’s possible to tell whether a student is truly interested and understands the material while they’re learning it online. The goal of this study is to determine how the coronavirus epidemic is affecting schooling.

What steps are institutions taking in reaction to Coronavirus?

Universities are increasingly deciding to utilise social distancing methods, such as switching to more online delivery of courses and allowing employees to work from home. There is currently no government advice to institutions on this subject. As a result, each operational choice made by different institutions must be based on their own local conditions, which differ for a variety of reasons. This study will look at some of the responses to the epidemic that we’ve seen across colleges.

Coronavirus’s influence on overseas students and colleges’ responses

This study will look into the effects of Coronavirus on overseas students and how colleges are responding.

Literary Kinship: An Examination of Black Women's Networks of Literary Activity, Community, and Activism as Practices of Restoration and Healing in the 20th and 21st Centuries

This dissertation is a Black feminist qualitative inquiry of the interconnections between Black women, literary activity, community, activism, and restoration and healing. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Black Women’s Literary Renaissance and the Black feminist movement converged to create one of the richest periods in Black women’s history. Black women came together in community, through the text, and through various literary spaces–often despite or even because of their differences–to build an archive that articulates a multivocal Black women’s standpoint which many believed to be monotonously singular. During this period, for example, Black women writer-activists wrote more novels, plays, and poetry in these two decades than in any period prior while also establishing new literary traditions. These traditions included the recovery of previously published yet out of print Black women writers, the development of the Black Women Anthology era, the creation of Black women writer-activist collectives, the founding of bookstores, as well as the development of Black Women’s Studies and Black feminist literary criticism in the academy. In the dissertation, these traditions are intrinsically tied to the articulation and definition of the theoretical concept of literary kinship. Conceptually, relationally, and materially literary kinship is the connection generated by the intergenerational literary activity between Black women and girls. In the dissertation, I use literary activity in slightly different ways including to denote community-engaged oral practices, publication, relationships defined around literary sites, and the practice of reading. Literary kinship provides access to community based on and derived from a connection to the literary that is often marked by intergenerational activity. I argue that Black women writer-activists during the period of the BWLR articulate and define literary kinship as a practice of communal restoration and healing for individuals and the collective.

Literary kinship is explored in four interrelated, yet distinct ways in the dissertation. In chapter two, literary kinship is located in and operationalized through Black women’s literary kinship “networks” founded during the Black Women’s Literary Renaissance. In chapter three, the focus is on the Black Women’s Anthology era that begins in 1970 and becomes a pipeline for the development of the interdisciplinary field of Black Women’s Studies in the 1980s. The fourth and fifth chapters shift the impact of the Black Women’s Literary Renaissance to the 21st century and examines how literary kinship is rearticulated or re-visioned a generation later. The fourth chapter, in this vein, uses autoethnography and literary analysis to illuminate the interconnections between Black girlhood, geography, and my concept of literary kinship. The chapter explores my experience of literary kinship at the kitchen table, in public libraries, and in secondary and higher education as transformative opportunities that fostered my love for reading, engaging in literary community, and developing reading as a restorative and healing practice. In the final chapter, the rapid reemergence of Black women booksellers and their bookstores in the last five years (2018-2023) become integral to a contemporary rearticulation of literary kinship.

The Black Women’s Literary Renaissance is a significant period of literary output by Black women writer-activists that has had intergenerational impact in the lives of Black women. During the Renaissance, Black women writer-activists were catalysts for critical and necessary literary interventions, strategies, and methods that supported their sociopolitical activism, the development of a rich Black feminist and literary archive, and that manifested community functional practices of restoration and healing. Black women’s articulation, definition, and utilization of literary kinship in the 20th and 21st centuries has supported their literary labors as activists, as intellectuals, and as community members, and is therefore a practice of community restoration and healing.

Alum Alexander Levine Honored with Charles A. Caramello Distinguished Dissertation Award

Descriptive image for Alum Alexander Levine Honored with Charles A. Caramello Distinguished Dissertation Award

University of Maryland Department of Computer Science alum Alexander Levine (Ph.D. '23, computer science) has been awarded the Charles A. Caramello Distinguished Dissertation Award for his dissertation titled "Scalable Methods for Robust Machine Learning." Levine, now a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Texas at Austin , focused on developing machine learning models that maintain accuracy amid distortions. The award ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, May 14, at the Stamp Student Union. The award is for the dissertation he completed in 2023.

The Charles A. Caramello Distinguished Dissertation Award is given annually by the Graduate School to recognize dissertations that provide highly original contributions that make an unusually significant contribution to the discipline. Levine is among four recipients of the award this year.

Awardees receive an honorarium of $1,000. Additionally, they may be nominated for further recognition at the national level through the CGS/ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award competition, which selects outstanding dissertations from across the country to honor achievements in graduate research.

“I feel honored that my work has been recognized by this award,” Levine said. “I am deeply thankful for all of the support I received during my time at UMD from my advisor, my collaborators, my dissertation committee and the rest of the UMD computer science community. I am fortunate to have worked with such talented people on such interesting problems.”

Advised by Associate Professor Soheil Feizi , Levine's dissertation introduces innovative methods for ensuring the robustness of machine learning models, specifically in scenarios where input data may be subtly altered or distorted, including malicious tampering. This research is particularly relevant as machine learning applications become increasingly prevalent in areas requiring high reliability and security.

Levine explained that practitioners can implement these systems more confidently in safety-critical applications by developing machine learning techniques with well-understood robustness guarantees. He noted that the capabilities of machine-learning-based systems have expanded dramatically in just the last couple of years, increasing their use in various sectors. Levine emphasized the growing importance of ensuring these systems' robustness as their applications broaden.

Levine is currently expanding his research focus.

“At UT Austin, my research focus has shifted to representation learning for sequential decision-making tasks,” Levine shared. “In particular, I have been working on frameworks that allow deep learning to be used in combination with search-based planning techniques, so that we can benefit from both the powerful capabilities of modern deep learning and the interpretability, flexibility and efficiency of classical planning methods. ”

Levine received the Larry S. Davis Doctoral Dissertation Award in the Fall of 2023 . Named in honor of Computer Science Professor Emeritus Larry Davis , the award, given by UMD’s Department of Computer Science, highlighted dissertations that were exceptional in their technical depth and potential for significant impact.

Tracking Toward Carbon Neutrality: Digitalization’s Role In Sustainable Higher Education Campuses

Siemens Smart Infrastructure

In the journey towards achieving carbon neutrality and advancing sustainable practices, higher education institutions are not merely embracing sustainability; they are spearheading its integration into their core strategies. The urgency to address climate change and reduce carbon emissions has prompted a reevaluation of traditional campus management practices.

One central aspect of this transformation is the development of “smart campuses,” a concept that integrates advanced tech solutions to improve the quality of education, communication, security, and overall campus life.

Digitalization is helping to create sustainable smart campuses.

Understanding the Carbon Footprint of Higher Education

Universities, as centers of knowledge and innovation, are uniquely positioned to lead the charge in addressing climate concerns. However, the sprawling nature of campus infrastructure, energy-intensive facilities, and diverse operational needs often contribute significantly to their carbon footprint. Recognizing and mitigating these environmental impacts has become a priority for higher education institutions aiming to align with broader sustainability development goals.

The integration of digital technologies into higher education operations is not a novel concept, but its potential impact on sustainability often goes understated. Indeed, in the Siemens Infrastructure Transition Monitor 2023, data driven management of systems was only considered advanced by 37 percent of respondents.

Digitalization offers a holistic approach to campus management, presenting opportunities for data-driven decision-making, efficient resource utilization, and a reduction in overall environmental impact. The unobtrusive implementation of digital solutions ensures that sustainability becomes an inherent aspect of campus life without compromising the core mission of education. Initiatives like the “The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings,” which assess universities against the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, take this into account. These rankings serve as a tool for measuring universities’ societal impact and their efforts towards sustainability and social responsibility on a global scale.

Optimizing Energy Consumption Through Intelligent Systems

One of the critical challenges in the pursuit of sustainability is achieving meaningful change without disrupting the daily operations of a university. Smart campuses, facilitated by digitalization, enable a seamless transition towards sustainable practices. For example, the gradual integration of building automation solutions allows for intelligent control of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, ensuring optimal comfort for occupants while minimizing energy wastage.

By creating virtual replicas of physical infrastructure, institutions can gain valuable insights into energy usage patterns, identify inefficiencies, and implement targeted measures to enhance overall energy efficiency. The result is a gradual reduction in carbon emissions while improving the student and faculty experience on campus. Siemens Xcelerator , through its innovative digital twin technology, facilitates this process by providing comprehensive data analytics and actionable insights, enabling universities to optimize, among other items, their energy consumption and advance their sustainability goals.

This has been the case at the University of East London (UEL) campus, where through the digital twin technology provided by Siemens Xcelerator, the university has been able to effectively monitor and manage energy usage patterns, identify inefficiencies, and implement targeted measures to enhance overall energy efficiency.

Humber College Smart Lab

Data-Driven Insights for Informed Decision-Making

Digitalization doesn't just offer solutions; it equips university leaders with the tools needed for informed decision-making. With comprehensive data analytics, administrators can understand the impact of various initiatives on energy consumption and carbon emissions. This empowers universities to develop targeted strategies, set realistic goals, and monitor progress towards achieving net-zero objectives.

Through the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and sensors, universities can gather real-time data on campus usage, space occupancy, and resource consumption. This wealth of information enables institutions to optimize space and energy use while never compromising the student experience. With a data-driven approach, universities can make informed decisions that positively impact both the environment and the campus community.

Collaborative Sustainability: A Call to Higher Education Leaders

The journey towards sustainability is a collective effort that requires collaboration between universities, industry partners, and policymakers. However, the true success of these endeavors lies in the commitment of university leaders to embrace digital transformation. It’s crucial to recognize that digitalization and decarbonization are not isolated initiatives; rather, they are two sides of the same coin. Combining these opportunities can lead to a greater impact.

As we navigate the path to net-zero carbon emissions, higher education leaders must acknowledge the intertwined nature of digitalization and sustainability efforts. By fostering a culture of collaboration and integrating digital technologies seamlessly into campus life, universities can set a precedent for responsible environmental stewardship. The pursuit of carbon neutrality presents not only an obligation, but also an opportunity for higher education institutions to lead by example, inspiring the next generation to embrace a future where education and sustainability coexist harmoniously.
