Sundeep Kishan attempted a pan-Indian project with "Michael" after appearing in many bilingual films. It piqued people's interest.

Let's see if Sundeep Kishan's optimism paid off or not.

Story: It's the mid-'90s, and a young man named Michael has decided to kill his father. Gurunath (Gautam Menon), impressed by the boy's bravery, takes him under his wing. As an adult, the boy proves to be Gurunath's most reliable ally and protector.

When Gurunath’s son (Varun Sandesh) sees how much faith his father has placed in Michael (Sundeep Kishan), he becomes envious.

Gurunath eventually orders Michael to kill Theera (Divyansha Kaushik) and her father in Delhi. But Michael falls for her charm, and this sets off a chain reaction of events in which he is never quite sure who is on his side.

Artistes’ Performances: To look the part, Sundeep Kishan slimmed down. His Michael persona is spot on; he has less to say and more to do with action. The transformation of Sundeep Kishan is good.

Divyansha Kaushik is stunning at first, but her performance fizzles out later on. Vijay Sethupathi plays a small part that serves primarily to increase the film's star power.

Gautam Menon is miscast as a don. Varun Sandesh's portrayal of the jealous son is perfect.

Technical Excellence: The technical aspects of the film are excellent. The cinematography is superb, and the colour palette complements the theme perfectly. Besides the cinematography, the background music score is top-notch. The production values are first rate.

The editing department, however, ruined the mood due to the film's tedious pacing and lengthy runtime.

Analysis Similar to the opening of "KGF," in which a narrator who witnessed the entire event relates it in detail, "Michael" also begins with a narrator recounting the events he witnessed.

The story opens with the hero in his early years. It takes place in the middle of the 1990s. The visuals, music, and storyline all bring to mind "KGF" and "Vikram" films.

Ayyappa Sharma, who provides the voiceover for "Michael," effectively establishes the tone at the outset. Even though the sequences move at a painfully slow pace, the first interaction between Sundeep Kishan and Gautam Menon, the romantic track between Sundeep Kishan and the heroine Divyansha, and the first twist are all quite interesting.

Ranjit Jeyakodi, the film's director, uses the technique of withholding information and then revealing it in the film's climax. The film is interesting at first, but it quickly becomes tedious. It's easy to see that the director has lost control after a point.

This whole segment with Vijay Sethupathi and Varalakshmi Sarath Kumar, and the subsequent fight scenes, are incredibly tedious. By the introduction of Vijay Sethupathi, it becomes clear that the director lost the plot.

Also, with all this foreshadowing, we anticipate a surprising turn of events. But in the end, it's obvious that it's just a rehash of the "Munna" movie starring Prabhas.

So much buildup for a regular revenge drama!

It would have been different if the director had placed as much emphasis on the story as he did on the style. However, "Micheal" devolves into a futile attempt to tell a standard revenge drama in a stylized manner.

Overall, "Michael" is another example of a film that is more about style than substance. It's a gangster story. Sundeep's makeover, technical prowess, and slick visuals don't add much to the film, which suffers from a lacklustre narration.

Michael Movie Review: Sundeep, Vijay Sethupathi shine in technically sound film that’s bogged down by weak storyline

Michael is a gangster flick that’s more style than story for the most part. having said that, sundeep kishan, vijay sethupathi and sam cs are the absolute highlights of this film, says our review..

Every gangster movie is exciting to watch, not just because of the action, but because there’s a strong underlying emotional factor that gives rise to the violence. And Michael, directed by Ranjit Jeyakodi, also follows this template.

This film is set in Mumbai in the 1980s and Michael (Sundeep Kishan), an orphan who has grown up in Bombay, is the person around whom the story revolves. Gurunath (Gautham Vasuden Menon) is a leading gangster in Mumbai and Michael saves him from assassination - not once but twice - to the chagrin of his rivals. Gurunath treats Michael like his own son and while Amarnath, Gurunath’s son, watches with hatred, Michael is given an esteemed place in the gang. Gurunath eventually hands over the business of a bar, frequented by some of the worst gangs in the city, as a reward to Michael.

Meanwhile, Gurunath then assigns Michael the task of finding out who the last member of a rival gang was who wanted him dead. Michael heads to Delhi to stalk Theera (Divyansha Kaushik) and get close to her so he can find her father and kill him. But Amarnath also has plans of his own. However, things do not go as per plan once he meets Theera. Does he kill Theera’s father? What does Amarnath plan to do? What was Michael’s true motive in saving Gurunath?

Director Ranjit Jeyakodi starts off the narrative beautifully and it is gripping to watch Sundeep Kishan emerge as the new ‘physical hero’ in Telugu cinema. However, the movie starts to falter with the introduction of Theera in the first half. The romantic portions are slow and stretched out and the first two songs could have been avoided in this gangster drama. Though the romance forms the crux of the story, it's not well written and Divyansha Kaushik’s performance is OK. She seems to be crying for most of the film and it becomes annoying after a while.

It’s only in the second half, with the introduction of Vijay Sethupathi, that the pace picks up and we become invested in the film. When the backstory is narrated and the audience is made to understand why Michael does what he does, the film becomes more engaging, but it’s a tad too late.

Coming to the performances, Sundeep’s effort in transforming himself to play the angry young gangster in Michael is quite obvious and that is commendable. He managed to play Michael convincingly. Talented Vijay Sethupathi comes on screen in the second half and it’s actually him who carries the story forward. His acting is effortless and impactful. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar has a small role but she has done a good job and the audience roots for her.

Technically, Michael is solid – the cinematography by Kiran Koushik is excellent and music director Sam CS – who is really underappreciated – has delivered a brilliant BGM in Michael. It’s the story and writing by Ranjit Jeyakodi that lets you down since it’s old wine which is good only in bits and pieces. The age-old tale of someone wanting revenge for love and a son’s ambition to overthrow his father is not new to the audiences. The characterizations could have been better etched out as the presentation has to be new and this is where the writing is of utmost importance.

Michael is a gangster flick that’s more style than story for the most part. Having said that, Sundeep Kishan, Vijay Sethupathi and Sam CS are the absolute highlights of this film. Michael review: A stylish action drama that is bogged down by déjà vu

Ranjit Jeyakodi’s directorial is successful in giving a rustic makeover to Sundeep Kishan but more originality would have made it memorable.

Gangster films are one of the most clichéd genres in the history of Cinema, across all languages. It has been attempted in different forms, starting from the classic Godfather series directed by Francis Ford Coppola. There is hardly anything new left to explore.

However, a well-made gangster film is always exciting to watch, provided the director can bring a different dimension within the familiar territory.

Ranjit Jeyakodi’s Michael is well-mounted with a lot of technical finesse. But all that sheen is not enough to cover a weak storyline. At more than one place it looks like he wanted to make another KGF .

Michael is set in Mumbai in the 90s. Sundeep Kishan plays an orphan (titular role) who grows up in Mumbai.

Gurunath (Gautham Vasudev Menon) is a leading gangster in Mumbai and Michael saves Gurunath from his enemies, not once but twice. Gurunath treats Michael as his son, much to the disdain of his real son Amarnath (Varun Sandesh).

Michael quickly climbs up the ladder and soon becomes a vital cog in the circle of Gurunath. Gurunath even hands over the business of a bar to him. This bar is frequently visited by some of the worst gangs in Mumbai.

Things take a turn when Michael is assigned a huge responsibility. Gurunath gives him the task of finding out the last living member of his rival gang who wants him dead.

Michael heads to Delhi and his path crosses with that of Theera (Divyansha Kaushik). He gets close to her with a particular purpose and ends up falling in love with her, despite Theera’s repeated warnings.

However, Amarnath, who is meanwhile burning with jealousy, has his plans. The rest of the story looks at multiple things.

Is Michael successful in his mission? But more importantly what is the true motive of Michael in saving Gurunath?

The performances

Sundeep Kishan is someone who is known for a particular image. But, with Michael , the actor is successful in showing a different side of himself.

As Michael, he doesn’t speak a lot but is super effective in conveying the character’s mystery and menace through his body language.

Gautham Vasudev Menon makes for a classy antagonist. There is a certain swagger that the filmmaker-actor brings to the table.

Anasuya Bhardwaj’s role is an extension of what she did in Pushpa . But still, she is effective in conveying the anguish of a mother who has lost her son.

Vijay Sethupati and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar appear midway through the second half. They have extended cameos and the presence of these two momentarily lifts the second half.

In spite of the familiar terrain, there is no denying that Michael starts well. The introduction of Sundeep Kishan and his makeover as an action hero is wonderful to watch.

Also, the interaction between Michael and Gurunath is peppered with some wonderful lines.

There are certain scenes where Gurunath reads lines books from such as “ Macbeth ” and “ The Godfather ”. This adds a certain layer to the role of Gurunath.

Even Varun Sandesh’s hammy portrayal of a jealous son keeps the audience invested.

The initial portions between Michael and Theera have a certain intrigue about them.

The romantic portions start on an unusual note and we are constantly guessing about the real motivations of Theera. But the film soon starts slipping and never really recovers.

After a point, Theera spends most of her time crying. But at no point does the audiences feel any emotional connection with her.

A major reason for that is weak writing. As a result, Theera ends up being just a prop in the larger scheme of things.

The technical crafts

The second half, in particular, tests the audience’s patience with endless action scenes.

The big reveal in the climax isn’t hard to guess as it is an amalgamation of Yash’s KGF films and Prabhas-starrer Munna .

There is also a long-drawn voiceover at the end which goes on and on.

The action scenes choreographed by Dinesh Kasi are definitely effective when viewed in isolation. But when viewed in the context of the film, they feel never-ending, particularly in the second half.

Technically, the film comes across as a polished product.

The cinematography by Kiran Koushik is excellent. Sam CS’s background score and music are also in perfect sync. They hugely contribute to elevating the scenes even though the script lets the film down.

The 90s of Mumbai have also been successfully recreated.

This Michael has the required style and swagger but the missing element is substance!

Michael Movie What's Behind:

Sundeep Kishan is making his debut into Pan India Films arena with Michael. Billed to be a period action saga, Michael succeeded in gaining attention with promotional content. The main USP of the film is ensemble star cast which involves Sandeep Kishan in the lead role alongside Vijay Sethupathi, Gautam Vasudev Menon, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Anasuya and Varun Sandesh etc. The film is directed by Ranjit Jeyakodi and music is composed by Sam.C.S. Produced by Bharat Chowdary and Puskur Ram Mohan Rao.

Michael Movie Story Review:

Michael (Sundeep Kishan) arrives to Bombay in mid 90's and joins the gang of gangster Gurunath (Gautam Menon) who is already ruling the city. Michael is kept under supervision of Swamy (Ayyappa Sharma) who is a close aid of Gurunath. In one instance Michael save Gurunath from an attack and gets close to him. Guru sends Michael to kill his attackers. He meets Theera (Divyansha Kaushik) who is the daughter of one of the attackers and falls in love with her. Later Michael came to know that plan to kill Gurunath is laid by his son played by Varun Sandesh. Knowing this Varun Sandesh captures Theera and throws Michael from a cliff edge assuming he is dead. What happens after Michael's return ? Where did Vijay Sethupathi, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar fit in all this ? What is the main motive of Michael ? will be revealed in the remaining part of the story

Michael Movie Artists Review:

Sandeep Kishan’s effort is evident in his physical transformation and he has put in a lot of hardwork for the action scenes. He made intense fight sequences look believable. He leaves his mark in both action and emotional scenes.

Heroine Divyansha Kaushik is beautiful on-screen but struggles to emote in crucial scenes. Her chemistry with Sandeep Kishan looks good. Gautam Vasudev Menon looks neat as a gangster, but he fails to carry the menacing nature as his body language gets monotonous at places. 

Vijay Sethupathi and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar are seen in an extended cameo roles. Though they made their presence felt, but poorly written scenes spoils their roles. Weak role Anasuya Bharadwaj, no scope to perform as well. Much hyped Varun Sandesh's role looks good with perfect makeup of a 90's spoilt brat. But, his role left under developed. 

Michael Movie Technicians Review:

Writer and Director Ranjit Jeyakodi has written and wnated to present a slick action gangster story set in 90's. His plot has enough scope to work though it follows ususal tropes of a gangster film. But, he concentrated more in showcasing the movie glossy and stylish leaving the story and screenplay completely for a toss. Though the plot is convincing when the true colours are revealed at the very end. The screenplay is messed up in most of the places. It tests the patience as most of the scenes are needlessly dragged and repetitive too. It also reminds us of KGF with powerful dialogues elevating hero and music also resembles th BGM of KGF at times.

Sam CS's Background Music deserves a mention. Solid sounding throughout elevating some scenes. Cinematography by Kiran Koushik is terrific. Brilliant lighting and framing for a film which runs mostly in night effect. Some nice and neat inter-cuts by the editor, but the runtime is long and tiring. It needs some chopping. The production values from Producers Bharat Chowdary and Puskur Ram Mohan Rao are grand. They makers spent high on the film. The visuals match the period timeline in which the story is said to be happening, the art department has done a neat job in recreating 90's time within their budget.

Michael Movie Rating Analysis:

Altogether, Michael has a convincing and decent backstory to make into a gripping action film. But it failed with bad screenplay and boring moments. The motives and revelations are not clearly explored. Technically rich and okay in parts. But a huge disappointment is what we get in terms of screenwriting. Going by all these aspects CineJosh goes with a 2 rating for Michael.

సందీప్ కిషన్, దివ్యాంశ కౌశిక్ హీరోహీరోయిన్ గా తెరకెక్కిన మూవీ మైఖేల్. కాగా ఈ రోజు రిలీజ్ అయిన ఈ చిత్రం ఎలా ఉందో సమీక్షలోకి వెళ్లి చూద్దాం.

మైఖేల్ (సందీప్ కిషన్) చిన్నప్పటి నుంచే తన తండ్రిని చంపాలనే కోరికతో గురునాథ్ (గౌతం మీనన్) అనే పెద్ద గ్యాంగ్ స్టర్ దగ్గరకు చేరతాడు. అక్కడ తన పనితనంతో గురునాథ్ కి బాగా దగ్గర అవుతాడు. ఐతే, గురునాథ్ పై హత్య ప్రయత్నం చేసిన వారిని చంపమని మైఖేల్ కి చెబుతాడు. ఈ క్రమంలో జరిగిన కొన్ని నాటకీయ పరిణామాల నేపథ్యంలో మైఖేల్ తీరా (దివ్యాంశ కౌశిక్) కి దగ్గర అవుతాడు. ఆమెను ప్రేమిస్తాడు. దాంతో, గురునాథ్ చెప్పినట్టు చెయ్యడు. ఆ తర్వాత జరిగిన కొన్ని సంఘటనలు కారణంగా గురునాథ్ కి – మైఖేల్ కి మధ్య గ్యాప్ పెరుగుతుంది. అనంతరం మైఖేల్ ఏం చేశాడు ?, ఇంతకీ, మైఖేల్ తండ్రి ఎవరు ?, ఈ మధ్యలో మైఖేల్ కి సాయం చేసిన విజయ్ సేతుపతి పాత్ర ఏమిటి ? అనేది మిగిలిన కథ.

ప్లస్ పాయింట్స్ :

మైఖేల్ జీవితంలో జరిగిన పరిణామాలను, అలాగే తన తల్లికి అన్యాయం చేసిన వ్యక్తి పై పగ తీర్చుకునే క్రమాన్ని కొంతవరకు బాగానే ఎలివేట్ చేశారు. అదే విధంగా మైఖేల్ గ్యాంగ్‌స్టర్‌గా ఎలా ఎదిగాడు అనే కోణంలో ఎమోషనల్ గా చెప్పే ప్రయత్నం చేశారు. మైఖేల్ పాత్రలో సందీప్ కిషన్ నటన ఆకట్టుకుంది. ముఖ్యంగా అతనిలోని ఆవేశం, ధైర్యసాహసాలు, అన్యాయం జరిగితే ఎదురుతిరిగే లక్షణాలను సందీప్ కిషన్ తన హావాబావాలలో బాగా పలికించాడు.

ఇక హీరోయిన్ గా నటించిన దివ్యాంశ కౌశిక్ తన నటనతో పాటు అందంతోనూ ఆకట్టుకుంది. అలాగే వరలక్ష్మి శరత్‌కుమార్ బాగా నటించింది. అనసూయకి కీలక పాత్ర దొరికింది. విజయ్ సేతుపతి పాత్ర సినిమాకి ప్రత్యేక ఆకర్షణగా నిలిచింది. అలాగే గౌతం మీనన్, వరుణ్ సందేశ్, అయ్యప్ప శర్మ పర్మార్మెన్స్ లు కూడా బాగున్నాయి. అలాగే మిగిలిన నటీనటులు కూడా తమ పాత్రల పరిధి మేర బాగా నటించారు.

మైనస్ పాయింట్స్ :

మైఖేల్ కథలో డెప్త్ ఉన్నా.. సీన్స్ కన్ ఫ్యూజ్డ్ గా స్లోగా అండ్ రొటీన్ గా సాగాయి. పైగా మెయిన్ ప్లాట్ లోని మెయిన్ క్యారెక్టర్స్ మధ్య ప్రధాన కాన్ ఫ్లిక్ట్ సరిగ్గా కనెక్ట్ కాలేదు. అలాగే ఎమోషన్ కూడా ఇన్ వాల్వ్ అయ్యేలా లేదు. పంజా, మున్నా, ముఖ్యంగా కేజీఎఫ్ చిత్రాలకు కాపీలా సాగింది మైఖేల్ ప్లే. అసలు ఇలాంటి యాక్షన్ ఎమోషనల్ కాన్సెప్ట్ తీసుకున్నపుడు ఆ కాన్సెప్ట్ కి తగ్గట్టు సినిమాని ఆద్యంతం ఉత్కంఠ రేకెత్తిస్తూ ర‌క్తి కట్టేలా సినిమా సాగాలి.

అయితే, ఈ మైఖేల్ సినిమాలో అలాంటి అంశాలు మిస్ అయ్యాయి. అలాగే కొన్ని ఇన్సిడెంట్స్ మరీ సినిమాటిక్ గా అనిపిస్తాయి. అలాగే సెకండ్ హాఫ్ లో చాలా సన్నివేశాలు అంతగా ఆకట్టుకోవు. పైగా మైఖేల్ పాత్రను డిజైన్ చేసిన విధానం కూడా బాగాలేదు. దీనికి తోడు సినిమాలో ఇంట్రసింగ్ ప్లేను బిల్డ్ చేయలేకపోయారు. హీరో క్యారెక్టైజేషన్ ను ఇంకా ఎఫెక్టివ్ గా రాసుకోవాల్సింది.

ముఖ్యంగా పలు యాక్షన్ చిత్రాల తాలూకు సీన్స్ యాక్టివిటీస్ ఈ సినిమాలో ఎక్కువగా ఉండటం మైఖేల్ కి బాగా మైనస్ అయ్యాయి. పైగా కొన్ని సీన్స్ లో నాటకీయత ఎక్కువడంతో ఆ సీన్స్ లో సహజత్వం లోపించింది. ఓవరాల్ మైఖేల్ లో లాజిక్స్ కూడా వదిలేశారు.

సాంకేతిక విభాగం :

టెక్నికల్ గా చూసుకుంటే సినిమాలో సాంకేతిక విభాగం వర్క్ బాగానే ఉంది. సామ్ సిఎస్ సంగీతం సినిమాకు ప్లస్ ఆయింది. అదే విధంగా సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ సినిమాకే హైలెట్ గా నిలుస్తోంది. కొన్ని కీలక సన్నివేశాల్లో కెమెరామెన్ పనితనం చాలా బాగుంది. సినిమాలోని నిర్మాతలు భరత్ చౌదరి, పుస్కూర్ రామ్ మోహన్ రావు పాటించిన ప్రొడక్షన్ వాల్యూస్ బాగున్నాయి. అయితే దర్శకుడు రంజిత్ జయకోడి రచయితగా దర్శకుడిగా ఆకట్టుకోలేకపోయారు.

యాక్షన్ ఎమోషనల్ డ్రామాగా వచ్చిన ఈ మైఖేల్ మూవీలో మెయిన్ పాయింట్ తో పాటు కొన్ని కీలక సన్నివేశాలు బాగానే ఉన్నాయి. ఐతే, స్క్రీన్ ప్లేలో ఇంట్రెస్ట్ మిస్ అవ్వడం, అలాగే ట్రీట్మెంట్ తో పాటు మెయిన్ క్యారెక్టైజేషన్స్ కూడా బలహీనంగా ఉండటం, పంజా, మున్నా, ముఖ్యంగా కేజీఎఫ్ వంటి చిత్రాలను ఎక్కువగా అనుకరించడం వంటి అంశాలు సినిమాకి బాగా మైనస్ అయ్యాయి. ఐతే, సినిమాలో సందీప్ కిషన్ నటన బాగుంది. మైఖేల్ పాత్ర తాలూకు కొన్ని ఎమోషన్స్ బాగున్నాయి. ఓవరాల్ గా ఈ చిత్రంలో కొన్ని యాక్షన్ ఎలిమెంట్స్ ప్రేక్షకులకు కనెక్ట్ అవుతాయి.

వరుస పరాజయాలతో సతమతం అవుతున్న సందీప్ కిషన్ కెరీర్ లో తొలి ప్యాన్ ఇండియా సినిమాగా తెరకెక్కిన సినిమా ‘మైఖేల్’. తెలుగులోనే హిట్ లేక అల్లాడుతున్న సందీప్ కిషన్ హీరోగా ఏకంగా తెలుగు, తమిళ, హిందీ, మలయాళ, కన్నడ భాషలలో భారీ స్థాయిలో విడుదలైన ‘మైఖేల్’కి అతిథిగా విజయసేతుపతి, వరలక్ష్మి శరత్ కుమార్ తోడవటంతో కొద్దిగా అంచనాలు పెరిగాయి. మరి శుక్రవారం జనం ముందుకు వచ్చిన ఈ సినిమాకు ఎలాంటి స్పందన లభిస్తోంది? సందీప్ ని సక్సెస్ పలకరించిందా? లేదా? అన్నది చూద్దాం.

కథ విషయానికి వస్తే ఇది 1991లో నేపథ్యంలో తెరకెక్కింది. తన తల్లికి జరిగిన అన్యాయంపై పగ తీర్చుకోవడానికి మైఖేల్ (సందీప్ కిషన్) ముంబై గ్యాంగ్ స్టర్ గురు (గౌతమ్ మీనన్) పంచన చేరుతాడు. గురు తన భార్య చారులత (అనసూయ) మాట జవదాటడు. వీరి కొడుకు వరుణ్ సందేశ్. తనే సొంతంగా గూండాగిరి చేయాలనుకుంటాడు వరుణ్. అందుకు తండ్రి గురు అడ్డుపడతాడు. దీంతో సొంత తండ్రినే చంపాలనుకుంటాడు. అయితే దీనికి మైఖేల్ అడ్డుపడి గురును కాపాడతాడు. తనను చంపాలనుకున్నవారిని కనిపెట్టే పని మైఖేల్ కి అప్పచెబుతాడు గురు. ఆ పని మీద ఢిల్లీ వెళ్ళిన మైఖేల్ అక్కడ థీర (దివ్యాంశ కౌశిక్) ప్రేమలో పడి గురును చంపటానికి ప్లాన్ వేసిన ఆమె తండ్రిని వదిలేస్తాడు. దీంతో వరుణ్ అతని గ్యాంగ్ మైఖేల్ ను కాల్చి థీరను తీసుకువెళుతుంది. ప్రాణాలతో బయటపడ్డ మైఖేల్ థీరను కాపాడతాడా? విజయ్ సేతుపతికి మైఖేల్ కి ఉన్న బంధం ఏమిటి? మైఖేల్ తల్లికి అన్యాయం చేసిందెవరు? అందుకు తను పగ తీర్చుకున్నాడా? వీటన్నింటికి సమాధానమే ఈ ‘మైఖేల్’ సినిమా.

టోటల్ సినిమా అంతా డార్క్ మోడ్ లో తెరకెక్కించారు. ఆరంభంలో స్వామి పాత్ర (అయ్యప్ప పిశర్మ)తో మైఖేల్ గురించి చెప్పటం నుంచి చివరి వరకూ మొత్తం ‘కెజిఎఫ్’ ప్రేరణతోనే సాగినట్లు అనిపిస్తుంది. దర్శకుడు రంజిత్ జయకోడి మాస్ ఆడియన్స్ ని మెప్పించాలనే తాపత్రయంతో సినిమాని నడిపించినట్లు అనిపించింది. సందీప్ కిషన్ కెరీర్ పూర్తిగా పరాజయాల బాటలో ఉన్నపుడు ఈ డార్క్ క్రైమ్ డ్రామాను కథావస్తువగా ఎంచుకోవడంతో పాటు ఇందులో విజయ్ సేతుపతి, వరలక్ష్మి శరత్ కుమార్ ను దర్శకుడు సరిగా ఉపయోగించుకోలేక పోవడం పెద్ద డ్రా బ్యాక్. తను కొత్తవాడైనా, సందీప్ కి మార్కెట్ లేకున్నా, అడిగిన నటీనటులను ఇచ్చి ఖర్చుకు వెనుకాడకుండా భారీ బడ్జెట్ తో ప్యాన్ ఇండియా సినిమా అన్నా వెరవక ఖర్చుపెట్టి సినిమా తీసిన నిర్మాతలను దర్శకుడు నిలువునా ముంచేశాడనే చెప్పాలి. నటీనటుల విషయానికి వస్తే మైఖేల్ గా సందీప్ కిషన్ ప్రాణం పెట్టి చేశాడు. అయినా మరోసారి అదృష్ఠం తనని వెక్కిరించింది. అందుకు కారణం సరైన కథను ఎంపిక చేసుకోలేకపోవడమే. తనకు జోడీగా నటించిన దివ్యాంశ కౌశిక్ గ్లామర్ ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది. గురుగా గౌతమ్ మీనన్, అతని కొడుకుగా వరుణ్ సందేశ్ ఓకె. అనసూయకు ఈ తరహా పాత్ర ఆలవాలమే. అయ్యప్పపిశర్మ ఇలాంటివి కొన్ని వందలు చేసి ఉంటాడు. శ్యామ్ మ్యూజిక్ సినిమా మూడ్ కు అనుగుణంగా సాగింది. ఇక ఈ సినిమా చివర్లో సీక్వెల్ ఉంటుందనే భ్రమను కలిగించటం మరింత హాస్యాస్పదంగా ఉంది. ఏది ఏమైనా మైఖేల్ గురించి చెప్పుకోవాలంటే నిర్మాణ విలువలు మినహా ఇంకేమీ లేదు.

Michael review: Sundeep Kishan’s most ambitious film is a gutsy attempt

Michael movie review: sundeep kishan, gautham menon and vijay sethupathi's film has a great casting choice which makes it a great bigscreen experience..

Ranjith Jeyakodi’s Michael has to be the one of the best visually striking films in recent years. This is a statement that the film truly deserves and if you’re someone with a basic understanding of cinematography, every frame feels no less than a painting. This is a massively mounted action-drama that’s undoubtedly ambitious on all fronts but what it lacks is a story that can keep you invested right till the end. Even with the big twist in the end, you wish the payoff had come much earlier.

The film opens with a young Michael ( Sundeep Kishan ) arriving in Mumbai with a hunger for revenge. We get to know about Michael and his rise through the voiceover of a crucial character. Cut to a few scenes later, Michael aspires to be like Gurunath (Gautham Menon), a suave gangster who rules Mumbai. An opportunity presents itself when Michael risks his life to save Guru. Soon, Michael joins Guru’s gang and a few years later he becomes his most trusted guy who is quickly handed over the operations of Guru’s bars in North Mumbai. A few months later, Michael is sent on a mission to follow the daughter of Guru’s enemy and kill them both. As fate would have it, he falls in love with the girl, Theera (Divyansha Kaushik). Thanks to his actions, Michael earns the wrath of Guru and things soon turn bitter between them.

Michael spends too much time in world-building and in making everything look exquisite. A lot of time is spent on justifying Michael’s anger but we’re never told the reason behind his thirst for revenge till the very end. By the time the reason is revealed, a lot of time is wasted in mindless action. As much as the action choreography deserves a lot of praise, it does get boring to watch after a point. It’s perfectly alright to make a violent film but when the violence lacks conviction and a strong emotional purpose, everything looks senseless. This is what happens with Michael for the most part and this is what lets the film down, despite being good in parts. Nevertheless, the film doesn’t shy away from being ambitious and it shows in Ranjith’s vision. Michael credits films like Nayagan, Deewar and John Wick as inspiration but it borrows heavily from KGF and even pays tribute to the Yash-starrer in a few scenes.

Sundeep Kishan is earnest from start to finish and he holds the film together with a very strong performance. He’s strongly complemented by Gautham Menon, who plays a gangster with effortless swagger. It’s a great casting choice and he isn’t your quintessential commercial cinema antagonist. Vijay Sethupathi has a special appearance but he still manages to shine in the few scenes he gets. Apart from the visuals, it’s Sam CS’s score that really elevates Michael and makes it a big screen experience worth cherishing.

జయాపజయాలతో సంబంధం లేకుండా వైవిధ్యభరితమైన కథలతో ప్రయోగాలు చేసుకుంటూ వెళ్తున్నారు సందీప్‌ కిషన్ (Sundeep Kishan)‌. ఇప్పుడాయన ‘మైఖేల్‌’ (Michael)తో పాన్‌ ఇండియా స్థాయిలో అదృష్టం పరీక్షించుకునేందుకు సిద్ధమయ్యారు. ఇందుకోసం ఓ భారీ యాక్షన్‌ కథాంశాన్ని.. దానికి తగ్గట్లుగా విజయ్‌ సేతుపతి ( Vijay Sethupathi ), గౌతమ్‌ మేనన్‌, వరలక్ష్మీ శరత్‌కుమార్‌ వంటి భారీ తారాగణాన్ని ఎంచుకొని పక్కాగా రంగంలోకి దిగారు. టీజర్లు, ట్రైలర్లు ఆసక్తి రేకెత్తించేలా ఉండటంతో సినిమాపై అంచనాలు పెరిగాయి. మరి ప్రచార చిత్రాలతోనే ఆసక్తిని రేకెత్తించిన ఈ సినిమా తెరపై ఎలాంటి అనుభూతిని అందించింది? ‘మైఖేల్‌’గా సందీప్‌ పాన్‌ ఇండియా స్థాయిలో సత్తా చాటారా? తెలుసుకునే ముందు కథేంటో చూద్దాం (Michael Review).

కథేంటంటే: జైలులో పుట్టి.. అక్కడే పెరిగిన వాడు మైఖేల్‌ (సందీప్‌ కిషన్‌) (Sundeep Kishan). తన తండ్రిని చంపడమే లక్ష్యంగా ముంబయిలో అడుగు పెడతాడు. అతను వచ్చీ రాగానే ముంబయి నేర సామ్రాజ్యానికి తిరుగులేని చక్రవర్తిగా ఉన్న గురునాథ్‌ (గౌతమ్‌ మేనన్‌)ను ఓ భారీ ఎటాక్‌ నుంచి రక్షిస్తాడు. తనని కాపాడినందుకు కృతజ్ఞతగా మైఖేల్‌ను తన దగ్గరే ఉంచుకుంటాడు గురు. తనని హత్య చేసేందుకు కుట్ర పన్నిన వ్యక్తుల్లో రతన్‌ (అనీష్‌ కురువిల్లా)ను తప్ప మిగతా అందర్నీ చంపిన గురునాథ్‌.. ఆ మిగిలిన ఒక్కడ్ని, అతడి కూతురు తీర (దివ్యాంశ కౌశిక్‌)ను చంపే బాధ్యతను మైఖేల్‌ చేతిలో పెడతాడు. అయితే రతన్‌ను వెతికి పట్టుకోవడం కోసం రంగంలోకి దిగిన అతడు.. తొలుత తీరకు దగ్గరవుతాడు. ఆ క్రమంలోనే ఆమెతో ప్రేమలో పడతాడు. ఆ తర్వాత రతన్‌ దొరికినా చంపకుండా వదిలేస్తాడు. ఆ సమయంలో గురునాథ్‌ తనయుడు అమర్‌నాథ్‌ (వరుణ్‌ సందేశ్‌) గురించి ఓ ఆసక్తికర విషయం పంచుకుంటాడు. మరి అదేంటి? రతన్‌ను చంపకుండా వదిలేసిన మైఖేల్‌ను గురునాథ్‌ ఏం చేశాడు? అసలు మైఖేల్‌ జైలులో ఎందుకు పుట్టాడు? తండ్రిని ఎందుకు చంపాలనుకున్నాడు? అతని కథకు గురునాథ్‌.. అతని భార్య చారులత (అనసూయ)కు ఉన్న సంబంధం ఏంటి? ఈ కథలో విజయ్‌ సేతుపతి, వరలక్ష్మీ శరత్‌ కుమార్‌ల పాత్రలేంటి? అన్నది తెరపై చూసి తెలుసుకోవాలి (Michael Review).

ఎలా సాగిందంటే: చరిత్రలో యుద్ధాలన్నీ మగువ కోసమే జరిగాయి. ఇది ఎవరూ కాదనలేని సత్యం. ఈ చిత్ర కథా నేపథ్యం కూడా అదేనని ప్రచార చిత్రాలతోనే స్పష్టత ఇచ్చారు దర్శకుడు. అయితే టీజర్‌, ట్రైలర్లలో ప్రేమించిన అమ్మాయి కోసం ఓ కుర్రాడు చేసిన మారణకాండలా దీన్ని చూపించారు కానీ, నిజానికి ఇందులో మరో ఆసక్తికర కథ కూడా దాగి ఉంది. అదేంటన్నది తెరపైనే చూడాలి. 1980-90ల మధ్య కాలంలో ఓ గ్యాంగ్‌స్టర్‌ ప్రపంచంలో సెట్‌ చేసిన కథ ఇది. దీనికి ప్రేమతో పాటు తల్లి సెంట్‌మెంట్‌ను జోడించి భావోద్వేగభరితంగా తెరపై ఆవిష్కరించే ప్రయత్నం చేశాడు దర్శకుడు. అయితే ఈ రెండింటి మేళవింపు బాగున్నా.. దాన్ని చక్కటి సంఘర్షణతో ఆసక్తికరంగా తెరపైకి తీసుకురావడంలో దర్శకుడు విఫలమయ్యాడు. కథా నేపథ్యానికి తగ్గట్లుగా సినిమాని రెట్రో స్టైల్‌లో తెరకెక్కించిన విధానం బాగుంది. మైఖేల్‌ పాత్ర పరిచయ సన్నివేశాలు, సంభాషణలతో కథను నడిపించిన విధానం ‘కెజీయఫ్‌’ చిత్రాన్ని గుర్తు చేస్తుంది. అందులో కనిపించే రేసీ స్క్రీన్‌ప్లే ఇందులో ఏమాత్రం కనిపించదు. గురునాథ్‌ను మైఖేల్‌ కాపాడటం.. క్రమంగా అతనికి దగ్గరవ్వడం.. అక్కడి నుంచి ఒక్కో మెట్టు ఎదుగుతూ గురు సామ్రాజ్యంలో తను చక్రం తిప్పడం.. మరోవైపు గురునాథ్‌ను చంపేందుకు కొందరు ప్రయత్నిస్తుండటం.. ఇలా ఆరంభంలో కథ కాస్త రసవత్తరంగానే సాగుతుంది. కానీ, ఆ ఆసక్తిని ఆద్యంతం కొనసాగించలేకపోయారు. రతన్‌ను చంపేందుకు మైఖేల్‌ దిల్లీకి వెళ్లడం.. అక్కడ తీరతో ప్రేమలో పడటం.. ఆయా సన్నివేశాలన్నీ చాలా నెమ్మదిగా బోరింగ్‌గా అనిపిస్తాయి. అసలు మైఖేల్‌ - తీరల మధ్య ప్రేమలో ఏమాత్రం ఫీల్‌ కనిపించదు. దీంతో వారి కథకు ప్రేక్షకులు ఏమాత్రం కనెక్ట్‌ కాలేరు. విరామానికి ముందు వచ్చే ట్విస్ట్‌ ద్వితీయార్ధంపై ఆసక్తిని పెంచేలా చేస్తుంది (Michael Review).

అయితే ప్రథమార్ధంలో కాస్తోకూస్తో ఆసక్తికరంగా సాగిన కథ.. ద్వితీయార్ధంలో పూర్తిగా నిరుత్సాహపరుస్తుంది. మైఖేల్‌ గతం ఏమాత్రం ఆసక్తిరేకెత్తించదు. అనవసరమైన సన్నివేశాలు, సంభాషణలు ప్రేక్షకుల సహనానికి పరీక్ష పెడతాయి. విజయ్‌ సేతుపతి, వరలక్ష్మీ పాత్రలు ఎంట్రీ ఇచ్చాక సినిమా కాస్త రసవత్తరంగా మారుతుంది. వారి పరిచయ సన్నివేశాలు ప్రేక్షకులతో ఈలలు వేయించేలా ఉంటాయి. పతాక సన్నివేశాలు సాగతీతగా ఉంటాయి. చివరి 15నిమిషాలు యాక్షన్‌ హంగామా, బుల్లెట్ల మోతే కనిపిస్తుంది. ముగింపు ప్రేక్షకుల ఊహకు తగ్గట్లుగానే ఉంటుంది.

ఎవరెలా చేశారంటే: మైఖేల్‌ (Michael Review) పాత్ర కోసం సందీప్‌ తన లుక్‌ను మార్చుకున్న తీరు మెచ్చుకుని తీరాల్సిందే. అయితే అతను ఆ పాత్రలో లీనమైనా తన నటన ఎందుకో కొంచెం కృత్రిమంగానే అనిపిస్తుంది. యాక్షన్‌ సన్నివేశాల్లో అదరగొట్టాడు. తీరగా దివ్యాంశ నటన ఓకే. తెరపై అందంగా కనిపించినా.. అభినయించే అవకాశం పెద్దగా దొరకలేదు. మాఫియా డాన్‌గా గురునాథ్‌ పాత్రలో గౌతమ్‌ మేనన్‌ చక్కగా ఒదిగిపోయారు. ఆ పాత్రను చూపించిన విధానం బాగుంది. ప్రతినాయక ఛాయలున్న పాత్రలో వరుణ్‌ను చూపించిన తీరు కూడా మెప్పిస్తుంది. తను ఇకపై ఆ తరహా పాత్రలకు పూర్తిగా షిఫ్ట్‌ అయిపోవచ్చు. అనసూయ పాత్ర కాస్త అతిగా అనిపిస్తుంది. విజయ్‌ సేతుపతి, వరలక్ష్మీ పాత్రలకు కథలో అంత ప్రాధాన్యం లేకున్నా.. వాళ్లు ఉన్న కొద్దిసేపూ తమదైన నటనతో అలరిస్తారు. దర్శకుడు రంజిత్‌ తీర్చిదిద్దుకున్న కథలో కొత్తదనం లేదు. అయితే మేకింగ్‌ స్టైల్‌, కథనాన్ని నడిపించిన తీరు కొంతమేర మెప్పిస్తాయి. ఈ చిత్రానికి ప్రధాన ఆకర్షణ సామ్‌ సీఎస్‌ నేపథ్య సంగీతమే. బలం లేని సన్నివేశాలకు సైతం తనదైన నేపథ్య సంగీతంతో ప్రాణం పోసే ప్రయత్నం చేశారు. కిరణ్‌ కౌశిక్‌ ఛాయాగ్రహణం కూడా మెప్పిస్తుంది. నిర్మాణ విలువలు బాగున్నాయి.

Actor Sundeep Kishan’s latest movie, Michael, which has been making a lot of noise, has finally been released today. The trailer showed a lot of promise, and let’s see how the film has turned out to be.

Michael is a young boy raised by a gangster in Mumbai. Michael has one goal in life, towards which he is focused at all times. Michael also has a past that very few know about. What is the past and what is Michael’s goal in his life, form the rest of the story.

On-Screen Performances:

Sundeep Kishan is good in his part, with his action sequences especially standing out. Without doubt, the actor has given his best performance to date in Michael, and has reinvented himself thoroughly with Michael. Despite his very honest and no holds barred performance, Michael doesn’t seem to have the substance to give him his much-needed break.

Gautham Vasudev Menon gets a meaty role in the film. With the kind of scope and importance that his character has, one would expect a lot of gravitas to be added by his character, but Gautham falls very short of that. His character lacks the impact because of his underwhelming performance. Gautham is surely a huge miscast in the film. Vijay Sethupathi and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar are grossly underused by the director, and are only seen for a brief period in the film.

Leading lady Divyansha Kaushik got a good role but she couldn’t make much of an impact.. Varun Sandesh’s role in the film was hyped up prior to the film’s release, but there’s not a lot that his character offers except for the pre interval episode, and he has done his part right..Anasuya Bharadwaj doesn’t get anything new to do in the film and is given a role that is very similar to the one she has been seen in previously.

Off-Screen Talents:

Director Ranjith has come up with a weak story line and many a times, one would get the feeling of watching KGF film franchise, especially when Guru’s main henchman narrates the story of Michael. With the exception of the last 30 minutes of the film, the rest of the film drags on, and is very slow at its pacing. The director also grossly underused actors like Vijay Sethupathi and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, while he overused Gautham Menon, who gave a very stone faced performance, which is a major drawback. The director should have put in more effort into the core element – story, than stylizing the film. The movie also doesn’t have a lot of entertaining parts, which might not sit well with regular audiences. The film has a very dark tone, which would only appeal to audiences that are into such kind of movies.

The cinematography of the film is top notch, and gives a very stylish look to the entire setup. The background music needs special mention, especially in the later half of the movie.

The production design of the film is good, but the editing could have been better, with a lot of scenes cut short, and the pacing improvised.

Plus Points:

• Sundeep Kishan’s performance
• Visually pleasing/Stylish

Minus Points:

• Lack of interesting story line
• Gautham Menon’s performance
• Slow paced narration
• No emotional connect

Verdict: Michael is a movie that had a lot of scope if focused more on story line and emotions than other crafts of the film. It is a movie that caters only to those who are into dark themed gangster films. While the second half of the movie is little bit better than first half in terms of story and pacing, it still falls short of worthy watch. Sadly, Sundeep kishan might have to wait until his next movie to taste success..

6:40 PM EST:  Michael meets Theera (Divyansha) Guru’s daughter in Delhi, he saves her from goons. Theera falls in love with Michael.

7:00 PM   EST: Michael finds out who is trying to kill Guru and founds something unexpected. A twist happens in the story which leads to half time break.

8:00 PM   EST: Story continues at a similar pace in the second half. Director tried KGF style narration which did not appease to the audience.

Michael Review – All Style No Substance

One day when Guru is attacked, Michael is tasked with finding the people behind it. Who are the attackers? The real reason for Michael’s growth in ranks forms the movie’s core plot.

Performances Sundeep Kishan plays an emerging gangster in the movie. He has gone with a toned chiselled body look for the same. While the physical effort is appreciable, unfortunately, it doesn’t help him overcome the issues at the script level.

The character is too heavy for a young hero like Sundeep Kishan. The depth and gravitas required to make the elevations believable are missing as a result. There is the body, but the body language needed to pull off an epic role is missing. The effort is there, and one has to appreciate it, but it isn’t enough for the part.

Divyansha Kaushik is okay. She is lucky to get a role that is integral to the narrative and also requires a certain kind of screen presence. Divyansha is decent in them, but again it fails to go to the next level to make it memorable.

Analysis Ranjit Jeyakodi directs Michael. It is a gangster action drama set in the nineties. The backdrop and the casting make the movie exciting.  

The movie begins on a promising note. The visuals wow us, and so do the making and the setting. However, as we get into the core story, the issues with the movie become apparent. 

The basic plot of Michael is an age-old gangster drama. Don has two upcoming gangsters under him, one being his son. The usual jealousy track and the heroic act on the other end leading to the conflict are done to death variety in the space. We have seen it many times before, and visuals are not enough to overcome it. 

Even the interval bang twist can be seen miles away. It is nothing new, and the makers, too, seem to realise it, but instead of freshening up in content, they do the same in form. So we have a stylish-looking package, but the contents inside are the same old gangster drama cliches. 

Still, one looks forward to the second half, mainly because of the casting. The prospects of watching Vijay Sethupathi, Varalaxmi Sarahkumar etc., make it possible. However, even they fail to give a boost to the proceedings. The block featuring them is dull and lacks impact. In fact, it is the same case throughout. 

It all starts with the director trying hard to make us buy Sundeep Kishan as the dreaded gangster. It never happens, and the elevations fall flat as he isn’t there yet in terms of the screen age and persona. The character feels too big for him. 

The ending, therefore, seems like a perfect fit even though very routine. It shows Michael for what he is really and not how he is portrayed. But, one lost interest a long time ago by that time. It’s one thing to set a tale in the nineties, but another to redo a story from the era without any upgrade. 

Overall, Michael is the definition of style without substance. It goes on and on exploring a predictable gangster drama story offering nothing but slick visuals. If you like the genre, give it a try for the fantastic technical work, and that’s it.

The actors who get meaty parts are Varun Sandesh and Gautham Vasudev Menon. The former appears after a long gap in a major film, playing a significant role. The retro look and all are well designed, and Varun Sandesh does well in small dramatic moments. However, whenever he has to show fierceness or aggression, the actor goes overboard, overdoing the required emotion. It exposes the weakness. 

And finally, the real hero of the film is Gautham Vasudev Menon. His character, presence and runtime feel bigger than the lead and are well done. Gautham Menon owns and lives the part, making one interested in the proceedings intermittently. The rest of the cast is okay.

Music and Other Departments? Sam CS’s music is alright, but he delivers with the background score. It enhances the overall appeal and mood of the flick. Technically the movie is slick, and none other than the cinematographer Kiran Koushik’s work highlights it. The production values are also good. R Sathyanarayanan’s editing could have been better, though. The movie needs to be tighter. The writing is par for the course. 

Highlights? Technical Values Cinematography BGM, In Parts 

Drawbacks? Predictable And Old Storyline Lack Of Substance Editing Weak Characterisations

Will You Recommend It? Yes, but with huge reservations

Final Report:

Michael comes with visible excellent technical work. However, it falters where it matters the most – the story. It comes across as an age-old one that drags endlessly with stylish wrapping.

First Half Report:

Michael has an exciting 90s backdrop and terrific visuals aided with moments of brilliance in BGM. But, the core element of ‘story’ lacks a similar impact and leaves much to be desired. A lot depends on the second half now to see whether things improve.

Movie Review: In ‘The Idea of You,’ a boy band is center stage but Anne Hathaway steals the show

In the warmly charming rom-com “The Idea of You,” Anne Hathaway plays a 40-year-old divorcee and Silver Lake art gallery owner who, after taking her teenage daughter to Coachella, becomes romantically involved with a 24-year-old heartthrob in the boy band August Moon. They first meet after she mistakes his trailer for the bathroom.

There are a few hundred things about this premise that might be farfetched, including the odds of finding love anywhere near the porta johns of a music festival. But one of them is not that a young star like Hayes Campbell ( Nicholas Galitzine ) would fall for a single mom like Solène (Hathaway).

Solène is stylish, unimpressed by Hayes’ celebrity and has bangs so perfect they look genetically modified. And, most importantly, she’s Anne Hathaway. In the power dynamics of “The Idea of You,” Hayes may be a fictional pop star but Hathaway is a very real movie star. And you don’t forget it for a moment in Michael Showalter’s lightly appealing showcase of the actor at her resplendent best.

“The Idea of You,” which debuts Thursday on Prime Video, is full of all the kinds of contradictions that can make a rom-com work. The highly glamorous, megawatt-smiling Hathaway is playing a down-to-earth nobody. The showbiz veteran in the movie is played by Galitzine, a less well-known but up-and-coming British actor whose performance in the movie is quite authentic. And even though the whole scenario is undeniably a glossy high-concept Hollywood fairy tale, Showalter gives it enough texture that “The Idea of You” comes off more natural and sincere than you’d expect.

The only thing that really needs to make perfect sense in a movie like “The Idea of You” is the chemistry. The film, penned by Showalter and Jennifer Westfeldt from Robinne Lee’s bestseller, takes its time in the early scenes between Solène and Hayes — first at Coachella, then when he stops by her gallery — allowing their rapport to build convincingly, and giving each actor plenty of time to smolder.

Once the steamy hotel-room encounters come in “The Idea of You,” the movie has, if not swept you away, then at least ushered you along on a European trip of sex and room service. At the same time, it stays faithful to its central mission of celebrating middle-aged womanhood. The relationship will eventually cause a social media firestorm, but its main pressure point is whether Solène can stick with Hayes after her ex-husband ( Reid Scott ) cheated on her. This is a fairy tale she deserves.

While Showalter ( “The Big Sick” ) has long showed a great gift for juggling comedy and drama at once, “The Idea of You” leans more fully into wish-fulfillment romance. That can leave less to sustain the film, which has notably neutered some of the things that distinguished the book.

The May-December romance has been shrunk a little. In the book, the singer is 20. Given that Galitzine is 29 and the 41-year-old Hathaway is no one’s idea of old, this is more like a July-September relationship. In the book, the daughter (Ella Rubin) is a huge admirer of the pop singer, adding to the awkwardness, but in the movie, August Moon is “so 7th grade” to her.

There are surely more interesting and funnier places “The Idea of You” could have gone. But Hathaway and Galitzine are a good enough match that, for a couple hours, it’s easy to forget.

But the most convincing thing about “The Idea of You”? August Moon. The movie nails the look and sound of boy bands so well because it went straight to the source. The original songs in the film are by Savan Kotecha and Carl Falk, the producer-songwriters of, among other pop hits, “What Makes You Beautiful,” One Direction’s debut single.

That connection will probably only further the sense that “The Idea of You” is very nearly “The Idea of Harry Styles.” The filmmakers have distanced the movie from any real-life resemblances. But one thing is for sure: With August Moon following 4(asterisk)Town of “Turning Red” (whose songs were penned by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell ), we are living in the golden age of the fictional boy band.

“The Idea of You,” an Amazon MGM Studios release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association for some language and sexual content. Running time: 115 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.

‘The Idea of You’ Review: Surviving Celebrity

Anne Hathaway headlines a movie that’s got a lot to say about the perils of fame.

Women of a certain age (that is, my age) feel like they grew up alongside Anne Hathaway, because, well, we did. We were awkward teens together when she made “The Princess Diaries” in 2001. We felt ourselves to be put-upon entry-level hirelings right when “The Devil Wears Prada” came out in 2006. We understood her broken-down narcissistic addict in “Rachel Getting Married,” because who couldn’t? And we watched the Hathaway backlash, pegged to public perception that she was trying too hard, and worried that people saw us the same way.

Now we’re 40-ish. We know for sure that Gen Z considers millennials to be cringe, and, thankfully, we no longer feel the need to care. The greatest gift of reaching middle age is having settled into yourself, and that is apparently what Hathaway, age 41, has done . She has been through the celebrity wringer (and more ) and come out the other side looking radiant, with a long list of credits in movies that swing from standard commercial fare to auteurist masterpieces.

This is perhaps why it’s so satisfying to see her name come first — alone, before the title credit — in “The Idea of You,” which is on its surface a relatively fluffy little film. Based on the sleeper hit novel by Robinne Lee, “The Idea of You” is plainly fantasy, in the fan fiction mold, that poses the question: What if Harry Styles, the British megastar and former frontman of One Direction, fell madly in love with a hot 40-year-old mom? In this universe, the Styles character is Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the British frontman of a five-member boy band called August Moon.

Hathaway plays Solène Marchand, an art gallery owner whose arrogantly useless ex-husband, Daniel (Reid Scott), buys v.i.p. meet-and-greet tickets for their 16-year-old daughter, Izzy (Ella Rubin), and her two best friends, all of whom were huge August Moon fans … in the seventh grade.

The event is at Coachella, and Daniel is set to take the teenagers but backs out at the last second, citing a work emergency. Solène reluctantly agrees to take them, and while at the festival, mistakes Hayes’s trailer for the bathroom. They meet, it’s cute, and you can guess what happens next.

Or can you? It was clear about 10 minutes into the movie that what was required for enjoyment was to surrender to the daydreaming, and so, with very little internal protest, I did. How could I resist? Solène is smart, competent, kind and secure; she has great hair and a great wardrobe; and most important, she seems like a real person, even if the situation in which she finds herself greatly stretches the bonds of credibility.

More than once, I was struck by how authentically 40 Solène seemed to me — a woman capable of making her own decisions, even ones she thinks might be ill-advised — and how weirdly rare it is to see that kind of character in a movie. She has a kid, and friends, and a career. She reads books and looks at art, and she is flattered by this 24-year-old superstar’s attention but takes a long time to come around to the idea that it may not be a joke.

Solène also feels real shame and real resolve in the course of the winding fairy tale story, which predictably has to go south. But most of all, she’s in a movie that doesn’t try to shame her, or patronize her, or make her appear ridiculous for having desires and fantasies of her own. She’s just who she is, and it’s simple to understand her appeal to someone whose life has never been his own.

Directed by Michael Showalter, who wrote the adapted screenplay with Jennifer Westfeldt, “The Idea of You” succeeds mostly because of Hathaway’s performance, though she and Galitzine spark and banter pleasurably (and he can dance and sing, too). It tweaks the novel in a number of ways — Hayes is older than the book’s character, for one thing — and also seems to implicitly know it’s a movie, and that movies have a strange relationship with age-gap romances.

In fact, that’s one of its strengths. Several times, characters remark on the double standard attached to people’s judgment of Solène and Hayes’s relationship, hypothesizing that in a gender-swapped situation, people would be high-fiving the older man who landed the hot younger star. Sixteen years looks like a lot on paper, but in the movies, at least, it is barely a blip.

That musing is interesting enough, if a familiar one. More fascinating in “The Idea of You” is its treatment of the cage of celebrity. Hayes seems mature compared with his bandmates and the girls who follow them around, but he’s also clearly stuck in some kind of arrested development. And I do mean stuck: He is self-aware enough to tell Solène, plaintively, that he auditioned for the band when he was 14 and not much has changed beyond his level of fame. He wants a life beyond the spotlight, badly.

And that’s just what he can’t get. Neither can Solène, nor, eventually, anyone around her. The idea of living a quiet life might obviously be out of reach, but the added elements of tabloid news and rabid fans unafraid to treat Hayes as if they know him make things far worse. The film starts to feel a little like the tale of a monster, but the monster is parasociality, encouraged by the illusion of intimacy that the modern superstar machine relies on to keep selling tickets and merch and albums and whatever else keeps the star in the spotlight.

It’s probably coincidental that “The Idea of You” comes on the heels of Taylor Swift’s latest album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” on which she strongly implies that her carefully cultivated fandom has made her love life a nightmare. But spiritually, at least, they’re of a piece — even if the origins of the film’s plot seem as much borne of parasociality as a critique of it. And that makes Hathaway’s performance extra poignant. She’s been dragged into that buzz saw before. And somehow, she’s figured out how to make a life on the other side of it.

Manjummel Boys

The Indian Malayalam blockbuster Manjummel Boys will now be available on OTT in multiple languages, including Telugu. Since its theatrical premiere on February 22, 2024, fans have eagerly awaited its OTT release. Directed by Chidambaram, the film has not only shattered box office records but has also been recognized as one of the highest-grossing Indian films of 2024. The movie accumulated around $28 million worldwide at the box office throughout its theatrical run.

The storyline revolves around a group of Malayalee friends on a trip to Guna Cave, also known as Devil’s Kitchen, which has intrigued audiences. When one of their friends falls into the cave, the group puts forth all their efforts to rescue him, promising a gripping storyline with suspense and adventure. Meanwhile, for those eager to watch Manjummel Boys, it will be available to stream on May 5, 2024.

Lineman, Raghu Shastry’s latest comedy drama, made its theatrical debut on March 22, 2024, in both Kannada and Telugu. The film was directed by Kaajal and produced by Purple Rock Entertainers. The cast includes Thrigun, Kaajal, Harini Srikanth, Anjali, Chethan, B. Jayashree, Gowravshetty, and others.

Set in the village of Khammam district in Telangana, the story revolves around a lineman named Nataraju, aka Nuttu. Employed at the Sathupally Electricity Department, Nuttu supplies electricity to the village. However, the story takes a turn when a respected lady is about to celebrate her 100th birthday, and the entire town is preparing for the occasion. In a surprising move, Nuttu cuts off the electricity supply, confusing the villagers. It will be available in Telugu on Amazon Prime Video from May 3, 2024.

Happy Ending

Yash Puri’s latest Telugu film, Happy Ending, made its theatrical debut on May 3, 2024. Directed by Kowshik Bheemidi, the film explores the story of a boy who has been cursed since childhood, leading to complications in his love life.

With a runtime of 2 hours and 26 minutes, the film has garnered a rating of 8.7/10 on IMDb . For those eager to watch the adult-comedy drama, it will be available for streaming on Aha from May 3, 2024.

Siddharth Roy

Siddharth Roy is the latest addition to the Aha OTT platform’s watchlist and will be available from May 3, 2024. Directed by V. Yeshasvi, the film premiered in theaters on February 23, 2024. The cast includes Deepak Saroj, Tanvi Negi, Anand, Kalyani Natarajan, Mathew, and others.

Produced on a meager budget, it has been produced by Shree Radha Damodar Studios, along with Vihaan and Vihin Creations. The film follows the story of Siddharth Roy, who always works logically but is overwhelmed by emotions. His perspective on life changes when he meets a girl.

Pranaya Vilasam

Pranaya Vilasam was initially released in Malayalam on February 24, 2023. It is directed by Nikhil Muraly and produced by Siby Chavara and Rajith Nair under the banner of Green Room Productions. Starring Arjun Ashokan, Anaswara Rajan, and Mamitha Baiju, the film reunites the lead actors after Super Sharanya, released on January 7, 2022.

Falling under the category of romantic drama, it explores one’s first love and emotions towards his partner. According to the Times of India , the film grossed around $245,000 in 10 days. After captivating the Malayalam audience, its Telugu dubbed version is set to premiere on May 2,2024, on ETV Win.

The Tamil film Asuraguru will make its digital debut in the Telugu language on Aha. Directed by A. Rajdeep, the film originally hit theaters on March 13, 2020 in Tamil. The talented cast includes Vikram Prabhu, Mahima Nambiar, Subbaraju, Yogi Babu, Jagan, Nagineedu, and others.

The film revolves around a man obsessed with money since he was a child. He possesses great knowledge of modern technology, which he later utilizes for theft. For those eager to watch this Telugu OTT release, it will be available for streaming from May 3 on the Aha platform .
