Your cover letter tells a story about you: your triumphs and successes in your career, what makes you the best candidate for the role, and how you can add more than just technical skills to a company.

It should be short and sweet, getting straight to the point about who you are and why you will contribute substantially to the company.

In the same way, a header for your cover letter gets to the point by sharing important details about yourself. Your header is the place where you share your contact information with your hiring manager, while also informing them of the date that you wrote the cover letter.

Your header can also show that you’ve gone above and beyond expectations by addressing the letter to a specific person from the company you are applying to. If you’re able to find the name of the hiring manager and their position within the company, this will create a more personalized  header.

A header for a cover letter typically sits in the top upper left corner of your cover letter. However, you can also include the whole header portion of the top of your page with a customized cover letter header.

There are three distinct sections for the cover letter header format: your personal information, the date of writing, and contact information of the hiring manager.

Let’s dive into what you should include in your header:

1. Include your personal Information

  • Your first and last name
  • Phone number
  • Email address

2. Date of Writing

Next, skip a line and include the date that you’re writing the letter. Include the full name of the month, followed by the day and year of the day that you’re writing your cover letter.

It’s going to look something like this:

April 18, 2022

You may also want to include the city that you’re writing the letter in at the beginning of the date:

Chicago, April 18, 2022

3. Hiring manager’s name

Skip another line and include the hiring manager’s information. Finding the hiring manager’s information can be difficult, but don’t worry, you can usually find it on a job application. If you’re applying to a company without a job application, just search through a company’s “about us” page, or look through the company’s LinkedIn page.

There are three things that you should include:

  • The hiring manager’s name
  • Their position
  • The name of the company

If you can’t find one, don’t sweat it too much. Just skip this information, and address it to “hiring manager”.

Optional things to include

There are other optional things that you can add to your header which help to personalize it. Here is some other personal information that you can include in your header:

  • Your professional social media profiles: This includes sites like LinkedIn, GitHub, or Medium, but would exclude personal social media sites.
  • Your personal website
  • A professional portfolio
  • Your address or the city where you live: This used to be common when you were mailing your cover letter and resume to a hiring manager, but is no longer necessary when sending a cover letter in an email.
  • The title of the position you have at your current workplace
  • The title for the job posting or the reference number: You can find the title for the job posting on any job description, and you can place it right after the date to help clarify the position you’ll be applying to.

Things to exclude from your cover letter heading

Your resume and cover letter are the best places to share about your skills and abilities, but try to keep them professional. Exclude really personal information, and try to avoid giving more than one phone number, as this can frustrate the hiring manager.

A cover letter header and a resume header are similar in format. They both share personal information, like your name, phone number, and email address. You may also want to format them similarly, with the same font, color and design elements being used for both.

According to a recent study, the average recruiter takes 7.4 seconds to scan each resume and cover letter that crosses their desk. One of the first things that a recruiter looks for is whether the header of the cover letter matches the resume’s header. A simple mistake, like having mismatched headers, can cause your resume to be tossed out.

The major difference between the two is that you write a cover letter with a specific person in mind: the hiring manager.

Like any formal letter, both the sender’s name (the job applicant) and the receiver’s name (the hiring manager) should be found on the cover letter.

A resume header simply includes your own personal information, but it can also be a great place to put springboard links, hyperlinks that lead to a personal website or portfolio. The heading provides your contact information, the date you are writing, and the address of the company to which you are applying.

For your contact information, you will want to include the following:

  • The address where you can be reached ( if you live at college, will it be more accessible to include the local address or your permanent address? )
  • Phone number
  • Fax number (if applicable)
  • E-mail address

Then, you will skip a line and write the full date ( month, day, year ). Follow this by skipping a space and writing the contact information for the person to whom you are writing:

  • Name of the specific person
  • Title of that person (if available)
  • Address of the company

The Best Cover Letter Format - What Goes on a Cover Letter

Your cover letter’s format is both how your cover letter looks and how it’s structured. 

So, cover letter formatting includes everything from page margins, spacing, and font size to how long your cover letter should be, how many paragraphs it should have, and what each paragraph should contain. 

Pretty substantial, if you ask us - which is exactly why we’ll go over these elements one by one. Before we do, however, let’s first get the essentials out of the way. 

What exactly goes into a cover letter? The short answer is as follows:  

  • A header , which contains your contact information and the employer’s or recruiter’s contact information.
  • A greeting to the recruiter and the opening paragraph , which you want to use to grab the reader’s attention.
  • The body of your cover letter , which is between 1-3 paragraphs.
  • A closing paragraph , which usually contains a call to action.
  • A formal salutation .

And here’s what that looks like in practice:

A Look into Your Cover Letter Format, by Section

In theory, all these rules are pretty straightforward...

But if you’ve ever written a cover letter before, you’ll probably agree with us that actually writing one ain’t all that simple.

In this section, we’ll take you through the entire process of creating a cover letter, section by section!

Starting with:

#1. Header 

Your cover letter’s header should contain your contact info, the date, and the hiring manager’s or employer’s contact info. 

If you’re wondering which contact information you should include and which you should leave out, here are the essentials: 

  • Full name and professional title (where applicable) 
  • Phone number
  • Name and professional title of the hiring manager
  • Name of the company you’re applying to 
  • Company address

#2. Greeting 

After listing your contact information, it’s time to address the cover letter . 

First things first: the impersonal and overly popular “To Whom It May Concern” and “Dear Sir/Madam” are yesterday’s news. They’re impersonal and just about every other applicant uses them. 

And you want your cover letter to stand out, right?

So, greet the hiring manager directly, instead. For example: 

Dear Mr. Brown, Dear Mrs. Waldorf,

If, however, you are unsure about their title, gender, marital status, or pronouns, use their entire name to avoid any mistakes, such as: 

Dear Alex Brown, Dear Blair Waldorf,

Alternatively, the recruiter may hold a title, such as Doctor, Professor, or sergeant, or you might be addressing a letter without a contact person. 

In such cases, here are some do-s and don’t-s to keep in mind: 

Dear John Doe, Dear Mr./Mrs. Doe, Dear Dr. Leonard, Dear Rev. Owen, Dear Marketing Hiring Team, Dear Director of Marketing,

To Whom It May Concern, What’s Up Hiring Team, Dear Sir/Madam, Hey John, Hi there Hiring Team,

#3. Opening Paragraph 

The opening paragraph of your cover letter is where the recruiter first gets to really hear your voice. As such, you’ve got to make it count and grab their attention before they move on to the next applicant.  

And how exactly do you do that? Well, for starters, avoid being generic. You don’t want your opening paragraph to sound as if you’re applying to dozens of jobs with the same letter.

Instead, you want your opening paragraph to mention:

  • Your name, profession, and years of experience.
  • 1-2 of your top achievements (to help you stand out).
  • The name of the firm and position you’re applying for.

Here’s what this would look like in a cover letter:

My name is Ellen and I’d like to join Company X as a marketing expert. I believe that my 5+ years of experience as a marketing specialist, as well as my skills in PPC management and copywriting, will help me drive new users to your platform Additionally, I believe that my past experience in the financial industry will help me excel at the role.

#4. Cover Letter Body 

The body of your cover letter usually consists of 1-3 paragraphs and is where you convince the recruiter that you're the right person for the job.

We have a few pointers to help you do that:

  • Don’t just rehash your CV. The recruiter already read it. Instead, use your cover letter to elaborate on your achievements and back them up with even more evidence. 
  • Understand the job requirements. Check the requirements for the position in the job listing, see how you can match them with your strengths and qualifications, and use the body of your cover letter to show you’re a good fit for the job. 
  • Research the company. Also important is to show that you match the company’s culture. Read up about the company you’re applying for and learn what’s their product/service, what are they known for, what kind of culture they have, and so on. Then, in your cover letter, mention a bit about the company’s culture and talk about how you’re a good fit.

And here’s hows the body of your cover letter would look like in practice: 

In my previous role as a Marketing Expert, I also handled the company’s Digital Marketing. During the course of one year, I managed the company’s monthly Facebook ad budget, which amounted to $20,000+ and the process of ad creation and management end-to-end. The process involved creating ad copies, images, picking out the targeting, running optimization trials, and so on. 

In addition to Facebook advertising, I am also knowledgeable in other Pay Per Click channels, such as: 

I actually learned a lot about PPC management basics from your company YouTube channel, and really admire how you guys manage your ad accounts. Since I’m already familiar with how Company X handles ads, I believe that I’d be able to really excel at the role.

#5. Closing Paragraph (And a Call to Action) 

Now, how you end a cover letter is just as important as how you start it. 

As you wrap up your cover letter, it’s important to do the following:

  • Mention anything that you couldn’t in the previous paragraphs . If you have anything left to say, mention it here. 
  • Thank the hiring manager for their time . Good manners go a long way. 
  • Finish the cover letter with a call to action . Your cover letter’s last sentence should be a call to action, such as asking the hiring manager to take some sort of action. 

Here’s an example of that: 

In conclusion, thank you for considering my application. I hope I have the chance to help your company take its marketing initiatives to the next level. It would be great to discuss how my experience so far can make that a reality. 

As for your formal salutation, you can use any of the following “tried and tested” greetings: 

  • Best Regards,
  • Kind Regards,

Cover Letter Format Guide 

We went over what goes in your cover letter section by section. However, how your cover letter looks on the outside is just as important. 

Following some standard formatting tips will show the hiring manager that you took the time and put in the effort to hand in the best version of a cover letter, which is sure to help your case. 

Here are the rules that you need to follow: 

  • Keep your cover letter between half and one page in length to make sure the recruiter actually reads the whole thing (if you had to read 100+ cover letters, you’d want applicants to stick to one page too). That’s between 250-400 words long . 
  • Use 1 or 1.5 line spacing throughout your text , and double spacing between paragraphs. 
  • Go for a simple and readable font and set your font size to 11 or 12 pts . Using custom fonts may seem like a good idea, but there’s no guarantee the hiring manager’s computer will have that specific font installed.
  • Save your cover letter in PDF format to make sure the layout stays the same despite the type of software or Operating System (OS) that opens it.

Sending Your Cover Letter Via Email? Here’s How To Do It! 

It’s safe to assume that nowadays, most cover letters are sent via email. That means that you’re probably submitting your email in one of two ways: 

  • Sending it as an email attachment.
  • Uploading it to the company’s webpage.

If that’s the case, you’re good with the formatting rules listed above. 

If, however, you’re sending your cover letter in the body of the email, here’s what you need to do differently: 

  • Write a professional subject line. The best and safest formula is “Name - Position you’re applying to” (e.g. “Helen Simms - Application for Marketing Expert Position”).
  • Remove the header. As the hiring manager’s contact details and the date are no longer necessary, remove the header altogether and place your contact information underneath the formal salutation. 
  • Look out for typos. Check your cover letter and then double-check it. Typing on a keyboard can be tricky; sometimes, a typo might just be a matter of fast typing. Avoid that by being extra careful. 

And you’re about ready to press “Send.”

Cover Letter Tips: How to Stand out to a Hiring Manager

Learn how to craft a cover letter that highlights your expertise while aligning with a company’s needs.

When you apply for a job, your application will often go through two stages before a recruiter invites you to interview. The first is the applicant tracking system (ATS), which scans your resume for specific keywords to identify if your experience matches the job requirements.

If the ATS determines that you are a match, a human recruiter will look at your application materials. This is the point where including a cover letter—even if it’s optional—may help you secure more interviews.

In a ResumeGo experiment, applications with a job-specific cover letter led to an interview offer 16.4 per cent of the time, while applications with no cover letter led to an interview offer only 10.7 per cent of the time [ 1 ]. That means to get one interview, you’d have to apply for about six jobs with a tailored cover letter or about nine jobs without a cover letter.

In this article, we'll go over the sections you should include in a cover letter and additional tips to write a compelling one.

Cover letter basics

As you prepare to write your cover letter, here are a few basic tips to get started:

Header: Your cover letter is a formal document, so use a formal header. To streamline your application documents, you can use the same header that tops your resume, including your name, email address, phone number, city and province or territory, and the URL for your online portfolio or LinkedIn profile if you have one.

Format: Use standard margins for your cover letter—usually one inch on each side—and keep your font size around 11 or 12. Use a common font, like Arial or Times New Roman, to make your letter easier to read.

Length: Your cover letter should be about a half-page to one page or about 250 to 400 words. The majority of recruiters and hiring managers will only spend one minute or less reading your cover letter [ 1 ]. Help them focus on the details you want to highlight by writing concisely and precisely.

Part 1: Introduction

The first part of your cover letter is your introduction, where you can share a bit about who you are and why you’re reaching out. Similar to a resume objective, you’ll get to define yourself as you’d like a recruiter or hiring manager to see you in this section.

Address the hiring manager.

Open your letter with a personal greeting directed toward the hiring manager. Most job listings won’t include the hiring manager’s name, but there are methods to find the right recipient for your cover letter, using resources such as LinkedIn or the company website.

Addressing the hiring manager by name adds a sense of intention behind your application and shows you want to start a dialogue with a specific person. Some examples of personal greetings include “Dear” or “Hello,” followed by their name.

Introduce yourself and share your why .

You can show a bit more personality in your cover letter than you’re able to in your resume, so introduce yourself in a way that feels true to the type of employee you are and want to be. Write with a voice that feels natural to your communication style and a tone that matches the one you might use when writing work emails or giving a presentation.

This can help the hiring manager feel like they’re really getting to know you, and it can help you find a workplace that appreciates your communication style as well as your experience and goals.

Part 2: Relevant experience

In the next paragraph (or two), illustrate the perception you presented in the introduction with specific supporting details. These details should relate to your work experience, but use this as an opportunity to expand on your resume bullets rather than repeat them.

It’s worth tailoring this section to the specific role you’re applying for and highlighting how your experience connects to the company’s needs based on the job description. The majority of recruiters and hiring managers surveyed—77 per cent—said that it is either “very important” or “absolutely imperative” that applicants tailor their cover letters to the job descriptions [ 1 ].

Demonstrate fit.

As you read the job description, you likely identified several transferable skills you can bring to this role. It is not necessary to list all of those skills in your cover letter. (You should, however, list all of those skills on your resume.)

To keep your cover letter concise, use the job description to identify the skills most necessary for success in this role and show how you’ve used those skills in the past to address or resolve similar needs.

Share your accomplishments.

Once you’ve connected your skills to their needs, take it one step further by sharing the results you’ve seen when you’ve employed those skills in the past. Results can be either quantitative or qualitative:

Qualifying your experience: This typically pertains to explanations you offer about what you did. For example, "I spent months building a new data set to help us analyze our performance and improve our KPIs based on those findings."

Quantifying your experience: This typically pertains to explanations that draw on numbers to show the impact of what you did. For example, "I built a new data set that provided valuable insights, and in turn helped us lower our bounce rate by 23 percent."

Part 3: Closing

The final part of your letter is your conclusion, where you leave the hiring manager with one last impression of who you are, what you want to achieve, and how that’s relevant to the company.

Ask for what you want.

As you end your letter, reiterate your desire to use your qualifications to meet the company’s needs and explicitly ask for the next step you’re hoping to take with this hiring manager, typically a meeting or phone call. Invite the conversation to continue by letting them know that there’s more you want to share and more you want to learn from them.

Formally sign off.

Maintain the honest tone you set in the introduction all the way through your signature. Include a line expressing gratitude for their time and use a simple sign-off, such as “Thank you,” “Sincerely,” or “Best.”

Following up on an application

After you apply for a job, you can follow up on your application by directly reaching out to a recruiter. This may help you stand out amongst the pool of applicants and can help you form a direct relationship with the recruiter. Learn more about reaching out to a recruiter.

Create your cover letter template

Recruiters and hiring managers notice when applicants submit a generic cover letter—78 per cent of those surveyed said it’s “easy” to distinguish between generic and tailored cover letters. At the same time, 81 per cent of the same group said they value tailored cover letters “significantly more” than generic ones, indicating that submitting a tailored cover letter with your resume could distinguish you from other equally qualified candidates [ 1 ].

However, writing a tailored cover letter for each application can quickly become an overwhelming task for a job seeker. One way to reconcile this is to create a personalized cover letter template that enables you to tailor your cover letter for each application easily.

You’ll likely be applying for similar roles at different companies and presenting yourself similarly at each, so your introduction and conclusion probably won’t change too much from one application to the next. Once you write your introduction and conclusion, you can templatize the body of your cover letter. Here’s how:

1. List common responsibilities, skills, and needs. As you read through job descriptions that pique your interest, you’ll likely notice common responsibilities and skills associated with the roles. You also may recognize similar company needs or problems you’re excited to help solve. Compile all of these in a list.

2. Write bullets reflecting your experience with each list point. Connect your experience to each of those common responsibilities, skills, and needs with one sentence for each.

3. Where relevant, add proof. Offer specific evidence of your success with your quantitative and qualitative accomplishments.

4. Insert points into your tailored cover letters . Mix and match your pre-written points as they apply for various positions. Remember to edit the points as needed to better align with specific roles.

I’ve always been fascinated by numbers, and working in data analytics has been a long-term goal of mine. My career in the restaurant business has taught me to think strategically about problems and identify solutions. I believe this experience has prepared me for Corelight’s Junior Data Analyst role.

During my previous role as a restaurant manager, I had to multitask to balance the needs of the company (revenue) and the customer (service and quality standard). Project management cover letter

Dear Mr Harland Sanders,

My name is George Lee, and I am excited to be applying for the Junior Project Manager position at Animax. I am currently a Project Coordinator at Square Paws, where I have supported several projects successfully to completion. I have long admired Animax’s work to improve animal adoption processes and would be delighted to contribute my skills to the team.

At Square Paws, I oversaw multiple aspects of running numerous projects. I worked closely with the project manager to develop project schedules, ensured team members had the resources they needed to complete their tasks, and coordinated communication with stakeholders on project updates. I am particularly proud of a project to roll out a feature on our app that users could use to book appointments with veterinarians. As a complex project that involved multiple stakeholders, it was important to be mindful of the details and listen continuously to feedback from users. My efforts to coordinate an early feedback system in a trial period led to the discovery of several bugs and pain points that we fixed for the launch. We were able to reduce customer concerns by 80% and ultimately completed the project under budget by $4,000.

I have long been familiar with animal adoption centres and believe wholeheartedly in Animax’s mission. How to Write a Cover Letter

S omebody hiring you for a job will skim your resume, or may use an applicant tracking system to review it, but they will read your cover letter if considering you for a position .

Resumes are a vital tool for landing a job, and no job seeker should rush writing it, but the cover letter is worth lavishing time and attention on, too.

So if you’re looking for tips on how to write a cover letter, open up a document, and let’s get writing.

What Is a Cover Letter?

A cover letter is a letter that you’ll submit to an employer along with your resume and anything else, like a portfolio of your work, when you apply for a job. The cover letter makes a case for why you’re the person the company should hire.

If your resume is analogous to your brain – offering the facts and the logical reason why you should be hired – the cover letter is your heart – possibly striking an emotional chord with the employer and at least getting to the heart of the matter of why you, and no one else, is right for the job.

The resume should convince the employer that you have the background for the job; the cover letter should make it clear that you’re going to be an amazing employee and a pleasure to work with. After all, if all goes well, these people may be hanging out with you on their lunch break or working closely with you when you’re dealing with stressed out or difficult clients. That's arguably almost as important as you actually being capable of doing the work you're being hired for. And because of that, an employer would like to have a sense of your personality and who you are. A well-crafted cover letter can do that.

Choosing a Header

So how should you start the cover letter? Most resume experts will tell you to try and find the hiring manager's name, if at all possible. Assuming you have it, then you'd go with "Dear Mr. Smith" or "Dear Ms. Smith." You might want to address the person by their first name, according to Jennifer Fishberg, founder of Career Karma Resume Development & Career Services, which is based out of Highland Park, New Jersey.

That is, if you’ve already had contact with the person, or there has been a referral, going with a first name might be fine, Fishberg says.

“But if you’re unsure, err on the side of the formal,” Fishberg says.

And what if you’re applying blindly and have no idea who is going to read the cover letter? Perhaps the classic and tried-and-true “To Whom It May Concern”?

That would be a hard no, according to Fishberg.

“’To Whom It May Concern’ is a non-starter,” she says. “It just screams that this is one of a hundred mass-produced letters you've sent out and couldn't be bothered. Part of the job of the cover letter is to humanize you to the reader, so an impersonal greeting doesn't help your cause there,” Fishberg says.

So what should you go with? “If you really can't find a name, then ‘Dear Hiring Team’ can work,” Fishberg says.

The Opening

So once you’ve addressed whom you’re writing to, as you can imagine, you’d better seem pretty compelling quickly. You’re competing with a lot of job applicants.

“A strong cover letter grabs the reader's attention from the first line,” Fishberg says.

Easy to say, not always easy to pull off. But Fishberg suggests that you might want to highlight what you know of your employer’s “pain points” and your ability to offer solutions. Your employer has some sort of problem or wouldn’t need to hire somebody. The employer hopes that by hiring you, you will solve those problems.

“Start with an attention-grabbing sentence,” says Deb Harrison, a former high school English teacher and now growth and change consultant who has worked with companies in recruiting and with individuals searching for jobs. She is based out of Montgomery, New York.

Harrison says that attention-grabbing sentence might involve a relevant quote, statistic or anecdote. But don’t go overboard with your quotes, statistics or anecdote. “Make it clear in the first paragraph why you are applying for the specific job,” Harrison says.

Writing the Body

OK, you feel good about how you’ve addressed whoever is reading your letter. You’ve got the reader hooked. Now here’s where things can either soar or start to fall apart.

There’s so much to think about, including:

Length. Most job sites will encourage you to write a cover letter that’s half a page to a page long. Harrison says that “recruiters have a lot to look through, so too much information may not even get read, but it should provide enough to stand out to the recruiter.”

Tone. “Type like you are speaking in an interview ,” says Pete Milne, managing director of Robert Walters North America, a professional recruiting firm. “It is so easy to be overly formal in written form.”

That may sound like the opposite of what you want since formal would seem to equate being professional, but no, Milne asserts. Being overly formal can really backfire.

“The tendency to use bigger words or complex language is tempting in order to show your intelligence levels. However, long sentences, difficult to read paragraphs and convoluted language are all signs of poor communication,” he says. “No one should have to dissect what you are trying to say. Make it obvious and super easy to read.”

Milne adds: “Also, imagine the shock when you turn up to an interview and sound nothing like your highly formal, legal-sounding cover letter. Stay true to yourself and be confident with your real tone of voice and personality.”

Details. As in, they matter, but don't go overboard here either. “Stick to the important stuff – a cover letter isn’t a biography,” Milne says. “As much as I encourage professionals to spend a good amount of time on a cover letter, there also needs to be an understanding that this will likely be scanned over by your prospective employer – hence the need to keep the language simple. See a cover letter as your highlights reel."

And only, Milne adds, including the highlights that are relevant to landing the job.

But if you feel like your cover letter needs a little something else, even if it has nothing to do with the job, you can probably get away with it, within reason, according to Milne.

“There is no harm in including that you are an avid surfer, but don’t go on about it unless you like to compete on a professional level, and tie in how getting to the finish line is a core makeup of your personality," Milne says. "All roads lead back to whether you will be good at this particular job or not.”

You may start to feel like this cover letter is as hard to write as a novel or television script, but you don’t have to close with a powerful ending for the ages or a cliffhanger, fortunately. Harrison advises that in your final paragraph and sentences you encourage the reader to take action – that is, reply to you (and be sure to provide your contact information). She also suggests you reiterate your enthusiasm for the position and thank the reader for considering your application.

Kyle Elliott, a career coach who lives in Santa Barbara, California, had a suggestion for the ending, if you have room and think it needs more punch.

"Because social proof is powerful, a creative and powerful way to end your cover letter is with a testimonial from a supervisor, colleague or client. You don't need to ask for an entire letter of recommendation here either. You can repurpose a testimonial from your LinkedIn profile or take a snippet from a performance review you received at work," he says.

And there you go. You’re done. Almost.

Review Your Cover Letter

That was just a first draft. You need to look over your cover letter again, especially if you really want this job . There are a lot of pitfalls that you want to make sure you didn’t stumble into while writing your letter.

For instance, you shouldn't only worry about typos or misspelling names, but getting basic facts incorrect.

“Frustratingly, the No. 1 thing that professionals can often get wrong in a cover letter is the company name or role that they are applying for,” Milne says.

Think about how that looks to a recruiter or potential employer, misnaming the company or even the type of job you’re applying for.

“Often the reason this happens is because job hunters typically use the same cover letter for multiple applications – barring a few tweaks,” Milne says.

"A copy and paste job when it comes to cover letters is lazy and can be borderline offensive or off-putting to recruiters or organizations depending on how obvious it is that you are firing off the same cover letter to multiple organizations," Milne says.

Repetition can also be a problem. In other words, are you repeating everything in the cover letter that you put in the resume? Not a great idea, according to Elliott.

“You want to avoid the common mistake of summarizing your resume when writing your cover letter. Instead, use your cover letter as an opportunity to express your interest in the company and role, as well as what sets you apart from other candidates,” Elliott says.

Sure, you knew that already – but it’s still easy to fall into the repetitive trap.

“Specificity is your friend when writing your cover letter. Give specific examples as to why you're drawn to this company compared to its competitors,” Elliott says. “Additionally, explain what distinguishes you from other applicants. If you offer a specific type of experience, knowledge or skill, be sure to call this out in your cover letter.”

Final Tips on Writing a Cover Letter

Finally, the important thing is to take writing a cover letter seriously.

"Cover letters often get a bad rap these days, both from job seekers and from the hiring side," Fishberg says. "Treating the cover letter as an obligatory nuisance is a missed opportunity to differentiate yourself from other applicants."

And if you can differentiate yourself, you'll have really pulled something off. You may even get hired .

"The perfect cover letter is the one that shows you've done your homework and understand this particular job and this company's needs. It's not one-size-fits-all," Fishberg says.
