Resubmitting a paper

Some assignments may allow students the ability to overwrite their previous submissions until an assignment's due date. This option is activated by an instructor on an assignment-by-assignment basis. If resubmissions are not enabled, your instructor must manually delete your previous submission to allow you user to submit your second file.

If resubmissions have been enabled or an instructor has deleted your first submission, resubmitting a paper is handled in an identical manner as a first-time submission.

You are allowed three resubmission attempts where the Similarity Report will generate immediately. After three attempts, you'll have to wait 24 hours before a new Similarity Report can be generated.

Resubmission attempts are shared between you and your instructor. If they attempt to resubmit on your behalf one of your attempts will be used.

Turnitin help

When you submit a text-based assignment in Blackboard, it goes into Turnitin, which is a program that compares the text in your assignment with a database of online sources, textbooks, journal articles and other student assignments.

Turnitin has undergone some changes

Find out more about the Changes to Turnitin from November 2022 .

How Turnitin works

Turnitin produces an Originality Report which highlights the text in your assignment that matches or is similar to another source, and links to the original source. The report also includes a Similarity Index which is calculated as the number of highlighted words divided by the total number of words in your assignment.

Be aware that Curtin does not define a ‘safe’ level for the Similarity Index, nor is there a level that signals that plagiarism has occurred. Turnitin does not distinguish between ‘innocent matches’ and those that may be considered plagiarism. For example, if a unit coordinator sets a question that all students must answer, likely that question text will match in all of the assignment submissions for that unit. This would be considered an innocent match.

How to use Turnitin to help avoid plagiarism

Downloading or printing your turnitin originality report.

This video covers how to access the Originality Report, what the Similarity Index is, and how the Originality Report is used to identify plagiarism.

What to do about those highlighted bits

This video covers reviewing your matches and deciding what action to take, and how to plan your work to prevent plagiarism.

Understanding Turnitin’s report

More about Turnitin

Curtin policy requires all text based assignments to be submitted to Turnitin. A copy of all work submitted to Turnitin will be retained on Turnitin’s database for future text matching. This process has been tested in the courts and found to be in compliance with copyright, privacy and data protection laws.

The effectiveness of Turnitin depends on its ability to store copies of all documents submitted to it. This has the benefit of protecting your rights and intellectual property in the future. Under exceptional circumstances, such as when the work is commercially sensitive, you can request that a paper be removed from the database. Undergraduate work would not be expected to fall into this category under normal circumstances. If you believe that exceptional circumstances apply in your situation, make a formal request explaining your reasons to your unit coordinator.

The only people able to view the copy of your assignment submitted to the Turnitin database, or the associated originality report, are the teaching team associated with that unit of study (such as unit coordinator, tutors and markers). Turnitin’s employees are not able to view your assignment.

The person marking your submitted work will review the originality report generated by the Turnitin service. The report highlights text in your submitted work that matches content in Turnitin’s databases. The marker will review each highlighted passage of text to determine if the passage has been poorly paraphrased or if it has been directly copied from another source, and whether this indicates plagiarism.

The report also includes an index (the Similarity Index) calculated as the number of highlighted words divided by the total number of words in your assignment. A high Similarity Index is not automatically interpreted by the marker as plagiarism, and Curtin does not define any minimum or maximum thresholds for the index score. This means that there is no ‘safe’ score nor is there a score that, if exceeded, indicates that plagiarism has occurred.

The detection of plagiarism is a matter of academic judgement by the marker, allowing and requiring them to take into consideration the type of match highlighted, the extent of matching and the use in-text citations and references.

Try troubleshooting the problem using the guide on the Turnitin website . This guide covers:

  • Accepted file types and sizes
  • Viewing a rubric or grading form before submission
  • How to submit a paper by uploading a file or cutting and pasting text
  • Viewing submitted files
  • Downloading Submitted Papers and Digital Receipts
  • Resubmitting a paper

If you’re still having difficulty submitting an assignment through Turnitin, contact your unit coordinator in case there are problems with the way the assignment submission link has been set up.

The Turnitin webpages include some graphics to guide you through the submission process and for various functions associated with viewing the originality report and accessing the digital receipt. Normally these visual elements have hidden text behind them to allow screen readers to function.

If you’re using a screen reader, you may find that the Turnitin Document Viewer is not fully compatible with your software. The Document Viewer is the default view for the Originality Report. It appears in a separate browser window that is launched when you access your submission from the Turnitin Assignment Inbox. The ‘text-only’ view of the Originality Report is generally more compatible with screen reader technologies.

To access the ‘text-only’ view follow these steps:

  • In your Blackboard unit, navigate to the assignment submission page and select the link labelled View/Complete to show the Turnitin page.
  • The Turnitin page has two tabs. Make sure the Assignment Inbox tab is active (this is selected by default). For the appropriate assignment in the list, select the View button.
  • Select the Text-Only Report link at the bottom of the page.

From the preferences link, the text-only report provides the following options that may improve accessibility:

  • Colour code matches: 1) Yes or 2) No.
  • Default mode 1) show highest matches together 2) show matches one at a time 3) quickview (classic) report.

auto-navigation 1) jump to next match 2) scroll to next match. Turnitin remembers the last view used to access the originality report, so when you open another report, the view used last will be displayed. This way, you can set the default to be Document Viewer or Text Only.

Get Started

Setting up your Turnitin classes is easy when you know how. In just four quick steps, learn more about Turnitin's class management tools and how to get your students started. At the end of this tutorial, you can put these simple steps into practice.

1. Create Your Password

You'll need your email address and last name to create your Turnitin account password and set your security information; this information can be found in your welcome email. You can then log into Turnitin and begin customizing your account.

2. Create a Class

The creation of a class is the first step towards using the Turnitin services available to your institution. A Turnitin class groups assignments, helping you to organize student submissions. Once your classes have been created, you can start creating assignments.

  • Click the All Classes tab from any Turnitin page to direct you to the homepage
  • Click the green Add Class button
  • From the Create a new class page, select the class type, and complete the fields marked with an asterisk
  • Select the class end date
  • Click Submit to add your class to Turnitin
  • Once your class has been created, you will be provided with the Class ID and enrollment password, which will allow your students self enroll

3. Create an Assignment

Once your class is ready, it's time to set up your first assignment. A Turnitin assignment forms the basis of accepting student submissions. Once your assignments are set up, you start adding students to your class.

  • Click the relevant class name
  • From your class, click the green Add Assignment button
  • Enter an assignment title
  • Opt to only allow students to submit file types that generate Originality Reports or to allow any file type
  • Next, select your assignment's start date, end date, and post date; the assignment post date is the date from which your students can view your feedback
  • To customize your assignment further, click the optional settings button to reveal an array of options; each option will be accompanied with contextual help icons
  • Click Submit to add your assignment to your Turnitin class

4. Add Students

There are three routes available for adding students. You may find it convenient to add students one by one, or add a large portion of students at once by uploading a list. Alternatively, why not allow your students to enroll themselves at their own pace?

Add Students One by One

You may prefer to use this method when adding fewer than ten students.

  • Click Home from any Turnitin page to direct you to the homepage
  • From the Class homepage, click the Students tab at the top of the page
  • Click the Add Student button to the right
  • Enter the student's first name, last name, and email address
  • Click Submit to add the student

Upload a List of Students

For adding ten students or more, you may find it quicker and easier to upload a list.

  • In a Word™ or plain text file, each student should be written as: first name, last name, email address format with one student per line. In Excel™, separate the first name, last name, and email address into different cells in a column.
  • From the student list, click the Upload List button
  • Click the Choose file button and browse for the plain text, Word™, or Excel™ file that you wish to upload
  • Once the file has uploaded, click the Submit button to upload
  • Check the student details displayed on screen, then click yes, submit to add the students, or no, go back to amend the file

Allow Students to Self-Enroll

Allowing students to self-enroll can save you time.

  • Make a note of the seven-digit Class ID for the class you would like your students to join
  • Next, select the cog icon under Edit
  • From the Edit Class page, make a note of the enrollment password
  • Pass the Class ID and enrollment password to your students
  • Ensure this information is kept safe at all times

What is Turnitin?

  • What is it for?
  • Why is it Used?
  • How does it Work?
  • How do I Upload Things?
  • What File Formats are Accepted?

Turnitin is text-matching software used by UCC to uphold Academic Integrity

Turnitin is used as part of the assignment submission process at ATU to help students demonstrate academic integrity in their work by demonstrating how to use, create and communicate information in an original, honest, and responsible manner.

Turnitin identifies when texts are similar.  Its purpose is to educate students about correct citation and referencing methods.

What's it for?

The purpose of Turnitin is to help students improve their academic writing techniques by highlighting similarities to other sources on the Internet and other students’ work enabling them to make decisions about the quality of their writing.

For example, has the student:

Relied too strongly on one source.

Paraphrased, summarized or quoted someone else’s work without referencing it.

Used no sources at all and thus their work is uncorroborated.

Turnitin should also help in reducing instances of plagiarism and improve overall academic integrity. It is a formative tool intended to help students. Students are encouraged, but not required, to follow up on the analysis it provides.

How it Works

If a lecturer opts to use Turnitin for a course or assignment, the lecturer will create a ' Turnitin Assignment ' within Blackboard or Moodle

When a student submits a 'Turnitin Assignment' within Blackboard or Moodle, the assignment will then be submitted to Turnitin for text-matching.

Turnitin matches the text within an assignment by comparing a student's submission against a database of electronic texts from the Internet, published works (such as journal articles and books), and assignments previously submitted to Turnitin by other students.

Turnitin then creates an ' Originality Report ' which can be viewed by lecturers and students, which identifies where the text within a student submission has matched another source.

How do I upload my work?

Your lecturer will inform you if Turnitin is used for the course or module you are taking and you will typically summit your work to check it's originality via the LMS (Canvas).

Please note  the library cannot give access  to Turnitin.

Turnitin supports the following file formats:

  • Microsoft Word
  • WordPerfect
  • OpenOffice (ODT)
  • Hangul (HWP)
  • Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Sheets (submitted via the Google Drive submission option),
  • Plain text files

Using Turnitin at UCC

Ai writing detection, accessing the similarity report.

  • Reading the Analysis Report

Viewing Similarity Matches

Turnitin's AI writing detection capability is designed to help educators identify text that might be prepared by a generative AI tool. Our AI writing detection model may not always be accurate (it may misidentify both human and AI-generated text) so it should not be used as the sole basis for adverse actions against a student. It takes further scrutiny and human judgment in conjunction with an organization's application of its specific academic policies to determine whether any academic misconduct has occurred.

The AI writing indicator

When you open a Similarity Report, the AI writing indicator is in the side panel. After a short period of processing, the indicator will display one of three potential states:

The AI writing report

The AI writing report contains the overall percentage of prose sentences contained in a long-form writing format within the submitted document that Turnitin’s AI writing detection model determines was generated by AI. These sentences are highlighted in blue on the submission text in the AI writing report.

The above content is from:

  • Turnitin: AI Writing Detection

The Similarity Report can be accessed from within SpeedGrader.

  • Select the assignment name and open Speedgrader.
  • Select the similarity score, indicated by the colored square under "Submitted Files" on the right, to open the Turnitin Viewer
  • You can also access the report through Gradebook, then Speedgrader.

The above information is from:

  • Turnitin: Accessing the Similarity Report

How do I read the analysis?

Turnitin checks your submissions against their database to see if there are instances where your writing is similar to, or matches against, one of their sources, and will flag this for your lecturer to review.

It is normal for an assignment to match against some of their database. As long as you have referenced correctly, this is fine. The similarity score simply highlights any matching areas in your paper so your instructor can use this as an investigative tool to determine if the match is or is not acceptable.

The color of the report icon indicates the similarity score of the paper, based on the amount of matching or similar text that was uncovered. The percentage range is 0% to 100%. The possible similarity ranges are:

  • Blue:  No matching text
  • Green:  One word to 24% matching text
  • Yellow:  25-49% matching text
  • Orange:  50-74% matching text
  • Red:  75-100% matching text

For more information see Turnitin's Interpreting the Similarity Report Guide linked below.

  • Turnitin: Interpreting the Similarity Report

The  Match Overview  section displays the similarity percentage and a breakdown of all the matches that have been found on a paper, ordered by highest similarity match to lowest.

The similarity percentage ranges from 0 to 100 with 0 representing no matches, and 100 percent meaning everything matches. The matches are numbered and color-coded to make it easier for you to understand.

Turnitin is a plagiarism prevention system used at SNHU. Turnitin is accessible through Brightspace however, it is not used in every course. If Turnitin is being used in a course, a student submits a paper and Turnitin checks it for plagiarism against content on the web, other student papers, and selected online library databases.

If Turnitin is being used in your course there may be a number of ways or places where you could be asked to submit a paper within Brightspace. For this reason, please contact your instructor for help submitting a paper through Turnitin.

Can students self-check a paper in Turnitin for plagiarism before submitting it to the assignment?

Nov 21, 2023 • knowledge article, information.

It is not possible for students to self-check a paper within Turnitin without submitting it to an assignment created by an instructor, unless your institution has enabled Turnitin Draft Coach for your institution's Turnitin account.* If an assignment allows resubmissions, you may be able to resubmit a paper several times before the assignment’s due date, and any second or subsequent submission will overwrite the original submission in this assignment. You are allowed three resubmission attempts where the Similarity Report will be generated immediately; after three attempts, you will have to wait 24 hours before a new Similarity Report can be generated. If resubmissions are not allowed, your first attempt will be final. If you wish to check a paper beforehand, you will need to ask your instructor and see if they are willing to set up a separate assignment for this specific purpose. Instructors can also set up assignments that will allow students to submit multiple drafts without overwriting previous submissions. *Note : Please check with your institution if access to Turnitin Draft Coach is available to you, this is one of Turnitin's latest products that allows students to effortlessly run a Similarity Report and check a document for similarities against our vast database which also includes citation and grammar checks.
