My home is situated in the city. It is not too big nor too small, just the perfect size. My family lives in the home. It comprises of my father, mother, sister and grandparents. We live in our ancestral home so my home is very vintage.

My House Essay: 600 words

A house can be defined as a building of any size that has four walls and a roof and is used by individuals or families for shelter and living purposes. It is one of the most basic requirements of human beings apart from food, clean water, and oxygen. However, not many people have a house or even a roof over their heads to protect themselves from the natural elements like sun and rain. This is why I consider myself blessed that I live in a house made of bricks and cement which protects my family and me from the sun, wind, rain, and cold winds.

My Ancestral House in Chandannagar

Our house is in Chandannagar, a city in the Hooghly district of West Bengal. The house was built by my grandfather’s father during the 1930s and is more than 70 years old. It is an ancestral house that I share with my big joint family consisting of 15 members. 

There is a very interesting story associated with the house. My grandfather’s father used to work as an accountant for the zamindars of the Balagarh region. They were very pleased and impressed with my grandfather’s father because of the dedication and sincerity shown by him during the course of his employment with them. As a result, they gifted a handsome sum of money along with this land to my grandfather’s father upon his retirement. Our ancestral house which I am going to talk about here was built on this land.

A Short description of my Ancestral House

The house is three-storeyed and quite large. The house is U-shaped with an open courtyard in the middle. On either side of the courtyard, there are long pillars and red-floored verandahs. At one end of the courtyard, there is a small thakurdalan where rituals and pujas of different gods and goddesses are held throughout the year. 

There are two large staircases at either end of the ground-floor verandah leading to the upper floors. The house has 20 rooms in total and 10 bathrooms. Some of the rooms are set aside for guests and my cousins who have married and moved away, but frequently come to stay with us. 

In the ground floor, we have a sitting area, a kitchen and a dining area. The dining room is quite large and can hold 20 people at once. In addition to these three rooms, there are only two other rooms on the ground floor. On the first floor there are 10 rooms. My grandparents, parents, paternal uncles and aunts stay in this floor. My cousins and I have our rooms on the top floor. This is because we wanted some privacy from the elders. When all the cousins are here during festival times, we have lots of fun.

 We have a huge U-shaped terrace – from one end of the terrace we can see the road in front of our house and from the other end we can see the garden at the back of our house. Back when I was a kid, we had a clear view of our neighborhood and surrounding areas. But nowadays there are lots of apartment building around our house which blocks the view. 

Conclusion 

I feel extremely lucky that I have a room of my own in my ancestral home which I share with my huge joint family. I feel safe and secure and the place holds a lot of beautiful memories of my childhood. It is a privilege that not many can enjoy. This is why I aim to take care of my ancestral home for as long as I can with or without my cousins’ help.

The idea of a house started in the ancient age when cavemen dwelled in caves. During this period, life was unrecognized and was not systematic. However, as the human species evolved, the need for houses became prominent with the population increasing.

Houses are built upon two different aspects – needs and imagination. The foundation needs to be strong to withstand any small natural disaster, and the construction should have different appearances based on how far we can imagine.

I was born in a village in West Bengal, India, and I live in a spacious house in the village. No, my house is not big like a bungalow. But it is spacious enough to accommodate ten family members. My father and my uncles inherited the house after my grandfather’s death, and we still live as one family.

We do not have a bedroom for each family member, but we manage the five medium-sized rooms we have. We have five bedrooms, two bathrooms, and two toilets at my home. However, there is only one kitchen where the meal for the entire family is cooked.

The house takes the shape of a square, with the bedrooms, kitchen, bathrooms, and toilets surrounding an open veranda facing the open sky. There is only one entrance to the house, and it leads straight to the main road in front of the house.

The surrounding of my house is full of different small and big trees like –Mango, Jackfruit, Bamboo, Neem, and more. Unfortunately, I had to leave my happy home and birthplace and come to the city for my job. Right now, I share a 2BH apartment with a friend.

However, someday, I dream of returning to my home and renovating it into the house I dream of having. I want to renovate my house with lots of ventilation, a little space for a garden, spacious rooms, and clean water and electricity system. Most importantly, I will include a little balcony and a small library at my home.

A house is a place where we can be ourselves, and let our guard down. It is where we can feel loved, cared for, and feel at ease. Also, it is not always about the existence of a brick-and-mortar property; our family members or people who love us create a sense of feeling at home.

Introduction

There are different types of people living in the world. Some are lucky enough to acquire all the amenities while some are not. Specifically, almost 80% of the population live below the poverty line in India. Only a fortunate few can own a piece of land where they can build a house or buy a flat. As far as myself is concerned, I am blessed enough to be surrounded by four walls and a roof. It is a small but beautiful house that we call home. It is the fruit of my parent’s hard work and sacrifice.

House: A Blessing

In this world of uncertainty, having a house is obviously a blessing. This can only be understood when the people who do not have it are asked about it. This is the only way of realising the blessing of owning a house. A house is not always defined as luxurious if it is filled with all the latest amenities. Only a roof over the head can complete a house if there is happiness filled in it. 

But then again, only four walls and a roof always cannot complete a house. It is successfully completed when you are surrounded by your loved ones. The importance and significance of a house must be realised before it is too late. I realised it later. I had started to understand the importance of my house after an incident.

I have grown up with my parents and grandparents and a maid. The maid was from a distant place and she has been staying with us from my childhood days. One thing I noticed was that she did not want to go home. She worked for our house tirelessly. Even when my mother asked her to visit her home she denied every time. This particular thing astonished me. After that, I came to know that she did not have a proper house to live in. She wanted to spend all the time at our house because she was able to access all basic needs like electricity and water. This particular thing made me realise that no house is taken for granted. I am truly blessed to have a house. 

I live in a house made by my parents, with my parents and grandparents. My parents built this house for us with a lot of hard work. It has three rooms, one balcony, one kitchen, two bathrooms, and a terrace. The house is open towards the south and very airy. The balcony is large enough where we can spend a lot of time enjoying the beauty of nature. The house is well-equipped with all the basic amenities. The speciality of our house is obviously the balcony. The location of the house is also very good as it is easily accessible from all parts of the city. 

My house is also a destination for my friends and relatives. Everyone likes the interior decoration and the set-up of our house. The perfect blend of modern facilities and vintage architecture makes our house so special.

My mother always said, “The best things in life are free”. I believe that the only thing that really makes a house is the family that lives there. In this essay, I am going to show you why my family means so much to me more than any other thing and why this is the house that I want to live my whole life in.

My father is a carpenter and has worked hard to provide us with the best house, life, and education that we could have asked for. The house my family lives in, is a beautiful three story, ranch style home with a big yard and the perfect views of the surrounding city skyline. The house has one of the largest living areas my family could ever ask for. The house has been built with great workmanship and every room has been planned with the family in mind. 

My father used every cent of the money that he earned building this house to provide us the best life. The house has been remodelled many times over the years, as my parents had different ideas on how they wanted it to look. Some of the updates include new flooring, ceilings, and appliances. My mom spends most of her time cleaning the house, doing laundry, and cooking dinner, even though she has been a homemaker all her life. I was lucky enough to be able to spend every summer as a kid helping my father fix the house up. 

During the school year, I helped him keep the house clean and I got to spend most of my free time doing what I really love, watching action and comedy movies. I was always impressed with how much work my father had to do to build this house and how proud he was when he finally finished. For the past 12 years, I wanted to be a professional basketball player, and have a lot of fun in the process of being a professional basketball player.

I am a very competitive person and I always wanted to beat my opponents to prove how good I am. During my college years, I would go to practice twice a week and play every single game. My teammates always supported me, and my father always encouraged me to do the best I can. When I had to make a decision of which college I wanted to go to, I chose Duke University because I thought that it would be a better opportunity for me to succeed.

The school is where I got my first opportunity to show the world that I am a professional basketball player. My team, Duke Blue Devils Basketball, had a very successful year as they won the ACC Championship. I made the decision to leave my school, North Carolina because I wanted to live in the city and I have more experience playing in front of a home crowd. I did not play as much as I wanted to, because I was hurt during the first season and had to rest my ankle. My dream was to play in the NBA, and I had the opportunity to get drafted when I was drafted number 14 by the Utah Jazz. I have loved my time at Duke and I am thankful to the coaches and teammates I have had. I am going to leave Duke Basketball with more than my high school teammates because of the opportunities I have had during the years I was there.

The house I live in now is my fourth home. It's my "dream house." It's big, and there's room for everything: books and furniture, clothes, pictures, toys, whatever. It's the perfect house for a three-year-old boy. It's even pretty. My sister bought it when she moved in, and we've added lots of stuff since then. It's a good place to live and it's warm in the winter, cool in the summer, and light-filled in the daytime.

But my house is not a house for me. I'm the oldest of four siblings and I'm usually the last one in my family to find a place. The others have homes already and they're busy taking care of their families. I'm not that busy. I don't have children and I don't really have much in my life. Most of the time I just stay home and read or watch television. And I like it like that.

In addition to reading and watching television, I also like to play games. I play a lot of the video games my sister has bought for me, but I also have many other toys and games of my own. My sister's house is a little crowded with the things I use, but I have room for it in my house. My house has a closet full of shoes and clothes and all the toys my brother has brought home since he was a baby. But my house is not a home.

It's too big and too expensive. A one-bedroom apartment in my neighbourhood is much smaller and much cheaper than my house. Plus, I have a little room in my own closet. I can't take everything with me when I move, just like I can't take all the things in my house with me. I have to decide what stays with me and what goes in my basement. I try to make a list of the things I want to take, but sometimes it's too difficult to decide which things are more important. I'm not sure where my house came from.

My mom bought it, but she's not always been around. We live in a three-story house, and it's hard to find anyone to live in our basement. We can't even make any money renting it out, because people don't even want to visit. I've called my dad once in the last few months, and he said he had no idea where we were, but I know the truth. He's not really my dad.

I wonder if my house was always this way and if my mom would still be my mom if I stayed. She was more, my mom, before I was born, and after I came into her life, my dad started to get more important to her. When she met my dad, she got pregnant again, but my mom and I never got to see him. So my mom went back to her old life, and I thought she would never get to know me. I always wondered if I would have had a different life if I had stayed. I know I'd have wanted a better life for my mom, and I would've wanted a better life for myself, but I had to go and make my dad happy.

I know the decision I have to make was hard for my mom, but my dad's the one who didn't want me, and it's not like he's changed his mind. He still doesn't want me around. I just wish my mom had tried harder, but she did the best she could. It was hard for her to keep trying after he told her no more times.

My house is my temple and my cosy corner at the same time. At the end of a tiring day it is the refuge of our house that we seek so fervently. It is certainly painful to think of people spending days and nights under the open sky but at the same time it fills me with the determination that I must grow up to be successful in eliminating their distress.

First to catch people’s attention is our front yard, which features a spacious garden filled with numerous plant types such as orchids and roses. My beautiful house is on the outskirts of the city. We have built our house on a big plot with lots of garden space and greenery to enjoy. My house has three bedrooms and a living room, along with a kitchen and a dining room. All of this is surrounded by a high compound wall on which we grow decorative creepers.

Our house is spacious and also well-lit since we have huge windows in all the living spaces. When we sit for our breakfast every day, we enjoy a wonderful view of the backyard with the lawn and flowers. Different materials such as bricks, cement, tiles, marbles, and wood were used to build the house.

My house is the best place in the world, and my friends love to come here and play with me. We have plenty of space to play all the games and don’t have to go out on the street.

We have two bedrooms, one big veranda, kitchen, living room, washroom, and a small lawn outside for gardening and garage purposes too. My father ensures the whitewashing and maintenance of the house once a year. There is a vacant plot in front of my house which is equipped with different kinds of trees and plants.

This adds more beauty to my sweet small home. We, three sisters, share one room and it is painted blue according to our wish. We use the same room for studying purposes. We keep our room always clean. My mother is a lady with a sense of maintaining cleanliness all around the house and even outside the house.

We are a small but happy family in our small house. My house gives me a feeling of safety and comfort. I love living in my house, my childhood memories are also embedded there. On the occasion of festivals and celebrations we decorate our house, it looks beautiful.

My house is the best place where I can relax. When the name of the house comes to our mind, a feeling of affinity arises. My house is a place filled with positivity and blessings. My family makes my house a beautiful place.

My house is like a mini-mansion when observed from outside. We managed for maintenance and whitewashing our house every year during Diwali. My family made my house a home for me. It includes my mother, father, two brothers and me. During festivals, all the members of our family reunite and celebrate. There are many of the special memories which we have in our house.

Utilization of Space outside My House

As my house is constructed on our own field; so, there is much vacant space in front of our house. My father used this space for gardening and making small shelter spaces for animals like cows and dogs. A little construction work was also required for the same. We arranged food and water for animals and birds over there. These activities and my family made my house a most adorable place to live. This area is one of my favorite portions of the whole house.

House is a beautiful creation of our parents for us. I love my house as it gives the feeling of safety and liveliness. Family member’s love and affection make our house sweet home.

The construction of a house must be done in a sensible way either it is a smaller or larger one. The creation of a house depends upon needs and imagination. Thus we can see that renovation in the structuring of the house goes on according to the requirements.

I am living in a 1 BHK flat in Delhi, along with my family members. There are four members in my family. Since we are living in a metro city, we get small houses in large rents. We live in a small house not fitting according to the family requirements but the care and affection of family never made us realize the space. There is only one bedroom so we two children have accommodated ourselves in the living area.

We have a proper kitchen, washroom, and a small balcony too. Our house is painted and remains clean always. We do not have much space but it is enough for our small family. We have a park in front of our apartment, which provides a good view. We also have a roof and sometimes we go there for getting good air. I have a small home, but it is properly managed and I love my place.

There is a lot of problem in metro cities if a person is having a larger family. The big flats are costly and thus people are compelled to live in small areas and are more prone to health-related problems due to poor housing.

 A Vision of My Dream House

I wish for my own house in the future, as we are living in a small house. I wish for my dream house to live with my parents and sisters. According to me, house should be equipped with all facilities like proper washrooms, kitchens, and airy rooms. I never dream of a big house, instead of a place which gives me the feeling of happiness and security and affinity. I am enlisting the features of my dream house.

  • Good Ventilation and Spaces – My house would have proper ventilation and there must be spaces all around the house. This will help in making the house airy and lively too.
  • Space for Garden – My house would have space for gardening, as plants help in air purification and provide a good look.
  • A balcony Attached to my Room – My house would consist of a balcony opening through my room; it will provide me with the outside view. My dream house should have a good view in front, either of any park or playground.
  • Lively Rooms – My house will consist of lively rooms, by painting them with different shades of colours. I want a reading place to be built in my house.
  • Water Harvesting System – My house would have the water harvesting system to collect the rainwater of the roof and save it from wastage.

House is the best place which renders us the feeling of love and affection along with security. It is the place where we feel most relaxed and free. I love my house and all my family members who are making it a sweet home.

The world watched in horror over the weekend as Iran launched more than 300 missiles and drones in an unprecedented attack against Israel.

Following decades of proxy warfare, the Iranian regime is directly attacking our greatest ally.

This comes months after the barbaric Oct. 7 attacks when Iranian-backed Hamas terrorists invaded Israel and brutally murdered, raped, tortured and kidnapped more than a thousand innocent Israeli civilians, leading to the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust.

The unprecedented and continuous attacks on Israel’s very existence have shocked the conscience of the world.

They also exposed the deep rot of antisemitism that exists within our society, and unfortunately no sector has allowed this rot to grow more than America’s colleges and universities.

In December, I exposed just how ingrained antisemitism has become at America’s so-called “elite” institutions of higher education when I questioned the presidents of Harvard, MIT and UPenn in what has become the most-viewed congressional testimony in history.

These presidents’ disgraceful attempts to contextualize my straightforward question — “Does calling for the genocide of Jews violate your university’s code of conduct?” — were a symptom of decades of moral decay, intellectual laziness and dangerous far-left radical groupthink.

As a result of this hearing, two presidents were ousted, and the House Education and the Workforce Committee and Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) launched an investigation into antisemitism at America’s colleges and universities.

Columbia University President Minouche Shafik was invited to attend December’s Education Committee hearing but did not appear, citing a scheduling conflict.

Since the horrific Oct. 7 terrorist attacks, antisemitism and antisemitic attacks at Columbia have been egregious and commonplace.

Shafik and Columbia board of trustees co-chairs will appear before the committee Wednesday to answer questions regarding their failures to ensure Jewish students are able to attend school in a safe environment.

More than 150 Columbia faculty members joined in a letter describing Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack as “just one salvo in an ongoing war between an occupying state and the people it occupies, or as an occupied people exercising a right to resist.”

Columbia’s Students for Justice in Palestine declared they were “in full solidarity” with Hamas’ “resistance.”

The university continues to employ a professor who described the Oct. 7 attack as “astonishing,” “astounding” and “awesome,” while events like Resistance 101,  led by a man who spoke of “friends and brothers in Hamas,” continue to proliferate.

In February, students from schools across the country attended an Education Committee roundtable where they shared their stories about the horrors of antisemitism they’ve seen and experienced on their campuses.

One Columbia student cited a clear double standard and lack of rule enforcement against organizations attacking Jewish students.

Our investigation has highlighted the need for real change and action at these institutions, as implementing half-measures are not enough.

While Columbia suspended Students for Justice in Palestine, it has failed to enforce its rules  on demonstrations.

Like many universities, Columbia stood up a task force, but it failed to even define antisemitism and cowardly failed to condemn chants of “Death to the Zionist State.”

We will bring Columbia leadership in front of Congress and hold them accountable for these incidents and their inadequate response to our investigation.

Universities have a duty to keep their students safe.

And when they fail, Congress has the duty to conduct rigorous oversight of the billions of US taxpayer dollars that support these higher-ed institutions.

We will not rest until this unchecked antisemitism is stopped.

NEW YORK – A National Public Radio editor who wrote an essay criticizing his employer for promoting liberal views resigned on Wednesday, a day after it was revealed that he had been suspended .

Uri Berliner, a senior editor on NPR's business desk, posted his resignation letter on X, formerly Twitter.

NPR would not comment on the resignation. Its head of public relations said the organization does not comment on individual personnel matters.

While Berliner said that he wishes NPR to thrive and do important journalism, he wrote that “I cannot work in a newsroom where I am disparaged by a new CEO whose divisive views confirm” problems that he discussed in his essay .

Katherine Maher, a former tech executive appointed in January as NPR's chief executive, has been criticized by conservative activists for social media messages that disparaged former President Donald Trump. The messages predated her hiring at NPR.

Berliner, who wrote his essay for the online Free Press site, had been suspended without pay for five days for violating the company's policy that it must approve work done for outside organizations, NPR reported on Tuesday.

Hundreds of Jan. 6 Prosecutions—Including Donald Trump’s—Are Suddenly in Peril at the Supreme Court

Will the Supreme Court jeopardize the prosecution of more than 350 defendants involved with Jan. 6, including Donald Trump, by gutting the federal statute that prohibits their unlawful conduct? Maybe so. Tuesday’s oral arguments in Fischer v. United States were rough sledding for the government, as the conservative justices lined up to thwap Joe Biden’s Department of Justice for allegedly overreaching in its pursuit of Jan. 6 convictions. Six members of the court took turns wringing their hands over the application of a criminal obstruction law to the rioters, fretting that they faced overly harsh penalties for participating in the violent attack. Unmentioned but lurking in the background was Trump himself, who can wriggle out of two major charges against him with a favorable decision in this case.

There are, no doubt, too many criminal laws whose vague wording gives prosecutors near-limitless leeway to threaten citizens with decades in prison. But this isn’t one of them. Congress wrote a perfectly legible law and the overwhelming majority of judges have had no trouble applying it. It would be all too telling if the Supreme Court decides to pretend the statute is somehow too sweeping or jumbled to use as a tool of accountability for Jan. 6.

Start with the obstruction law itself, known as Section 1552(c), which Congress enacted to close loopholes that Enron exploited to impede probes into its misconduct . The provision is remarkably straightforward—a far cry from the ambiguous, sloppy, or muddled laws that typically flummox the judiciary. It’s a mainstay of the Department of Justice’s “Capitol siege” prosecutions, deployed in about a quarter of all cases. Overall, 350 people face charges under this statute, Trump among them , and the DOJ has used it to secure the convictions of about 150 rioters . It targets anyone who “corruptly … obstructs, influences, or impedes any official proceeding, or attempts to do so.” And it clarifies that an official proceeding includes “a proceeding before the Congress.”

The government argues that some rioters attempted to “obstruct” an “official proceeding” by halting the count of electoral votes through “corrupt” means. That includes Joseph Fischer, the defendant in the current case. Fischer, who served as a police officer before Jan. 6, allegedly texted that the protest “might get violent”; that “they should storm the capital and drag all the democrates [sic] into the street and have a mob trial”; and that protesters should “take democratic congress to the gallows,” because they “can’t vote if they can’t breathe..lol.” Video evidence shows Fischer assaulting multiple police officers on the afternoon of Jan. 6 after breaching the Capitol.

Would anyone seriously argue that this person did not attempt to corruptly obstruct an official proceeding? For a time, it seemed not: 14 of the 15 federal judges—all but Judge Carl Nichols in this case—considering the charge in various Jan. 6 cases agreed that it applied to violent rioters bent on stopping the electoral count. So did every judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit except one, Judge Gregory Katsas. Both Nichols and Katsas were appointed by Trump. Their crusade to kneecap the law caught SCOTUS’ attention, and the court decided to intervene despite overwhelming consensus among lower court judges. The Supreme Court’s decision will have major implications for Trump: Two of the four charges brought by special counsel Jack Smith in the former president’s Jan. 6 prosecution revolve around this offense. A ruling that eviscerates the obstruction law would arguably cut out the heart of the indictment.

At least three justices seem ready to do just that. Justice Clarence Thomas—back on the bench after yesterday’s unexplained absence —grilled Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar over the law’s application to Jan. 6. “There have been many violent protests that have interfered with proceedings. Has the government applied this provision to other protests in the past?” Thomas asked, as if to nail the Justice Department for inconsistency and reveal some improper motive for wielding the law against violent insurrectionists. Justice Neil Gorsuch trolled Prelogar by alluding to Democratic Rep. Jamaal Bowman’s infamous fire alarm incident . “Would pulling a fire alarm before a vote qualify for 20 years in federal prison?” he asked. Justice Samuel Alito joined in to ask about “protests in the courtroom” when an audience member interrupts the justices and “delays the proceeding for five minutes.”

“For all the protests that have occurred in this court,” Alito noted pointedly, “the Justice Department has not charged any serious offenses, and I don’t think any one of those protestors has been sentenced to even one day in prison.” Why, he wondered, weren’t they charged under the obstruction statute?

Alito, audibly angry, continued: “Yesterday protestors blocked the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and disrupted traffic in San Francisco,” he told Prelogar. “What if something similar to that happened all around the Capitol so … all the bridges from Virginia were blocked, and members from Virginia who needed to appear at a hearing couldn’t get there or were delayed in getting there? Would that be a violation of this provision?”

To be clear, this is trolling: There is simply no comparison between a violent attack on the Capitol and protests that take the form of civil disobedience. And these justices expressed no similar concern about an ongoing red-state effort to persecute peaceful protesters who participate in Black Lives Matter demonstrations. Gorsuch and Alito’s hypotheticals ignore the reality that there are two layers of protection between minor protests and this rather major law. First, the Constitution affords prosecutorial discretion to the executive branch, allowing the Department of Justice to decide when an illegal “protest” is dangerous enough to warrant the use of a criminal law like the obstruction statute. Second, prosecutors must always prove the alleged offense to a jury, beyond a reasonable doubt, creating a democratic check on the abusive use of a stringent law to punish a silly crime.

Prelogar highlighted this latter point, explaining that juries have indeed acquitted Jan. 6 defendants of obstruction. If prosecutors ever apply this (or any other) criminal statute to a questionable set of facts, they may always be thwarted by a jury. That is how the system is meant to work.

This kind of behavior from Thomas, Gorsuch, and Alito is no surprise at this point. And the liberal justices countered them as best they could. What’s troubling is that the other conservative justices jumped in to join the pile-on. Chief Justice John Roberts insistently pressed Prelogar to prove that the Justice Department has interpreted and enforced the obstruction law consistently in the past. This question ignored the fact that, as Prelogar reminded the court, there has never been any crime like the assault on the Capitol , so the agency had no prior opportunity to apply the law in any similar way.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh suggested that the Justice Department didn’t really need this statute because it has other laws at its disposal. “There are six other counts in the indictment here,” he told Prelogar. Why “aren’t those six counts good enough just from the Justice Department’s perspective given that they don’t have any of the hurdles?” Of course, the DOJ brought the obstruction charge specifically because it was more serious than the others; prosecutors felt an obligation to enforce Congress’ strong protections against intrusions on official proceedings, including those in the Capitol. Kavanaugh appears to think the DOJ should have settled for a smattering of lesser charges. Justice Amy Coney Barrett was not so obtuse; she earnestly worried that the statute was too broad and fished around for narrowing constructions. Yet she seemed unsatisfied with the many options Prelogar provided to keep the law limited to the most egregious interruptions of government business.

What all six justices seemed tempted to do was rip up Section 1552(c) because it happens to include another sentence that applies to the destruction of evidence and other official documents. Jan. 6 rioters didn’t destroy evidence, this argument goes, so they can’t be culpable under a law. That reading is untenable , something Prelogar impressively reinforced at every turn on Tuesday, but it may be attractive if a majority wants to defuse this statute before it’s used against Trump in a court of law.

Smith’s indictment of the former president for his participation in Jan. 6 doesn’t entirely hinge on obstruction. It does, however, weave obstruction into both the facts and the legal theory of the case, placing it at the center of a broader criminal conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election. If SCOTUS defuses the law now, Smith would have to scrap two of four charges and restructure the entire indictment, making it that much easier for Trump to demand further delay and, eventually, evade a conviction.

The justices know this. They should have been on their best behavior on Tuesday to avoid any glimmer of impropriety. It was already profoundly disturbing that Thomas sat on the case given his wife’s involvement with the attempt to overturn the election. The other justices’ faux concern about overcriminalization of protesters only added to the foul smell emanating from arguments. There’s no telling how Fischer will turn out; maybe the liberal justices will help their colleagues rediscover their better angels behind the scenes. From Tuesday’s vantage point, though, the argument was a bleak reminder of how easy it is for cloistered jurists to wish away the massive stakes of a case like this.

Trump and Mike Johnson zero in on noncitizen voting. It’s already illegal and very rare.

Former President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson pitched new legislation to crack down on noncitizen voting on Friday, despite the fact the practice is already illegal and occurs rarely.

Johnson said House Republicans would introduce a bill to require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote, speaking at Mar-a-Lago next to Trump as he seeks to fend off threats from his right flank.

“It seems like common sense, I’m sure all of us would agree that we only want U.S. citizens to vote in U.S. elections,” Johnson said, falsely suggesting that “so many people” are registering to vote when they obtain welfare benefits.

It is already a crime to register or vote as a noncitizen in all state and federal elections, though Washington, D.C., and a handful of municipalities in California, Maryland and Vermont allow noncitizen voting in local elections.

And few individuals break those laws.

“This is a crime where not only are the consequences really high and the payoff really low — you’re not getting millions of dollars, it’s not robbing a bank, you get to cast one ballot,” said Sean Morales-Doyle, a lawyer at the Brennan Center for Justice. “But what also makes this somewhat unique is that committing this crime actually entails the creation of a government record of your crime.”

Registering to vote and casting a ballot both leaves a paper trail that elected officials are required by law to routinely review. Some records are available to the public, as well.

“It’s very easy to catch, and you will get caught,” Morales-Doyle added.

The consequences are sweeping, too: noncitizens can face jail time, fines or deportation for voting illegally. Registering to vote alone could carry a five-year prison sentence, according to the Brennan Center.

On the flip side, Morales-Doyle said, requiring documentary proof of citizenship could disenfranchise millions of Americans who do not have access to passports or birth certificates.

Several states have tried to require documentary proof of citizenship in the past, but federal law currently prohibits it in federal elections. Arizona requires it for state elections, alone.

Many have investigated noncitizen voting and found little evidence of it. The Brennan Center found just 30 suspected noncitizen votes amid 23.5 million votes in 2016 , suggesting that suspected noncitizen votes accounted for 0.0001 % of votes cast. Trump’s own election integrity commission disbanded without releasing evidence of voter fraud, even though he’d claimed 3 million undocumented immigrants had voted in 2016 costing him the popular vote.

But Johnson and Trump have both long advanced baseless claims about election integrity. Johnson repeatedly promoted conspiracy theories about the 2020 election and its voting machines being rigged, and he recruited Republicans to back a lawsuit seeking to overturn states where Trump lost.

For Trump, however, the proposal fuses two of his favorite talking points: immigration and voter fraud. 

“It’s the sort of story that if you’re inclined to not like immigrants in the first place feels truthy,” said Justin Levitt, a former Biden advisor on democracy issues and election policy expert. “I think that has helped it stayed politically potent even if it hasn’t gotten more true.”

Levitt said when noncitizens do vote, it’s typically a misunderstanding or mistake. He said he recalled an instance where California residents in the process of naturalizing were told they had been granted citizenship and immediately left naturalization interviews to register to vote. They had not been formally sworn in as citizens, however, and therefore were not eligible yet.
